संजय उवाच ।
शल्ये तु निहते राजन्मद्रराजपदानुगाः ।
रथाः सप्तशता वीरा निर्ययुर्महतो बलात् ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: O King, when Śalya had been killed, seven hundred brave charioteers, followers of the king of Madras, emerged from the vast army.
दुर्योधनस्तु द्विरदमारुह्याचलसंनिभम् ।
छत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन वीज्यमानश्च चामरैः ।
न गन्तव्यं न गन्तव्यमिति मद्रानवारयत् ॥२॥
2. duryodhanastu dviradamāruhyācalasaṁnibham ,
chatreṇa dhriyamāṇena vījyamānaśca cāmaraiḥ ,
na gantavyaṁ na gantavyamiti madrānavārayat.
2. duryodhanaḥ tu dviradam āruhya
acalasaṃnibham chatreṇa dhriyamāṇena
vījyamānaḥ ca cāmaraiḥ na gantavyaṃ

2. But Duryodhana, having mounted a mountain-like elephant, with an umbrella held (over him) and being fanned by whisks, restrained the Madras, saying, "Do not go! Do not go!"
दुर्योधनेन ते वीरा वार्यमाणाः पुनः पुनः ।
युधिष्ठिरं जिघांसन्तः पाण्डूनां प्राविशन्बलम् ॥३॥
3. duryodhanena te vīrā vāryamāṇāḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ jighāṁsantaḥ pāṇḍūnāṁ prāviśanbalam.

3. Though repeatedly restrained by Duryodhana, those brave warriors, desiring to kill Yudhiṣṭhira, entered the Pāṇḍava army.
ते तु शूरा महाराज कृतचित्ताः स्म योधने ।
धनुःशब्दं महत्कृत्वा सहायुध्यन्त पाण्डवैः ॥४॥
4. te tu śūrā mahārāja kṛtacittāḥ sma yodhane ,
dhanuḥśabdaṁ mahatkṛtvā sahāyudhyanta pāṇḍavaiḥ.

4. O great King, those brave warriors, resolute in battle, made a loud sound with their bows and fought with the Pāṇḍavas.
श्रुत्वा तु निहतं शल्यं धर्मपुत्रं च पीडितम् ।
मद्रराजप्रिये युक्तैर्मद्रकाणां महारथैः ॥५॥
5. śrutvā tu nihataṁ śalyaṁ dharmaputraṁ ca pīḍitam ,
madrarājapriye yuktairmadrakāṇāṁ mahārathaiḥ.

5. Having heard that Shalya was slain and the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) was distressed, along with the well-equipped great charioteers of the Madras, O beloved of the Madra king.
आजगाम ततः पार्थो गाण्डीवं विक्षिपन्धनुः ।
पूरयन्रथघोषेण दिशः सर्वा महारथः ॥६॥
6. ājagāma tataḥ pārtho gāṇḍīvaṁ vikṣipandhanuḥ ,
pūrayanrathaghoṣeṇa diśaḥ sarvā mahārathaḥ.
6. ājagāma tataḥ pārthaḥ gāṇḍīvam vikṣipan dhanuḥ
pūrayan rathaghoṣeṇa diśaḥ sarvā mahārathaḥ
6. tataḥ mahārathaḥ pārthaḥ ājagāma,

6. Thereupon, Partha (Arjuna), the great charioteer, arrived, waving his Gāṇḍīva bow and filling all directions with the sound of his chariot.
ततोऽर्जुनश्च भीमश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ।
सात्यकिश्च नरव्याघ्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः ॥७॥
7. tato'rjunaśca bhīmaśca mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ,
sātyakiśca naravyāghro draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ.

7. Then Arjuna and Bhīma, and the two Pāṇḍava sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva), and Sātyaki, the tiger among men, and all the sons of Draupadī,
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च पाञ्चालाः सह सोमकैः ।
युधिष्ठिरं परीप्सन्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥८॥
8. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca pāñcālāḥ saha somakaiḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ parīpsantaḥ samantātparyavārayan.

8. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, and the Pāñcālas with the Somakas, wishing to protect Yudhiṣṭhira, surrounded him from all sides.
ते समन्तात्परिवृताः पाण्डवैः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
क्षोभयन्ति स्म तां सेनां मकराः सागरं यथा ॥९॥
9. te samantātparivṛtāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
kṣobhayanti sma tāṁ senāṁ makarāḥ sāgaraṁ yathā.
9. te samantāt parivṛtāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ
kṣobhayanti sma tām senām makarāḥ sāgaram yathā
9. pāṇḍavaiḥ samantāt parivṛtāḥ te puruṣarṣabhāḥ

9. Surrounded on all sides by the Pāṇḍavas, those foremost among men (the Kuru warriors) agitated that army, just as sea monsters agitate the ocean.
पुरोवातेन गङ्गेव क्षोभ्यमाना महानदी ।
अक्षोभ्यत तदा राजन्पाण्डूनां ध्वजिनी पुनः ॥१०॥
10. purovātena gaṅgeva kṣobhyamānā mahānadī ,
akṣobhyata tadā rājanpāṇḍūnāṁ dhvajinī punaḥ.
10. purovātena gaṅgā iva kṣobhyamānā mahānadī
akṣobhyata tadā rājan pāṇḍūnām dhvajinī punaḥ
10. rājan tadā punaḥ pāṇḍūnām dhvajinī purovātena

10. O king, the army (dhvajinī) of the Pāṇḍavas was then again agitated, just like the great river Gaṅgā being disturbed by a strong headwind.
प्रस्कन्द्य सेनां महतीं त्यक्तात्मानो महारथाः ।
वृक्षानिव महावाताः कम्पयन्ति स्म तावकाः ॥११॥
11. praskandya senāṁ mahatīṁ tyaktātmāno mahārathāḥ ,
vṛkṣāniva mahāvātāḥ kampayanti sma tāvakāḥ.
11. praskandya senām mahatīm tyaktātmānaḥ mahārathāḥ
vṛkṣān iva mahāvātāḥ kampayanti sma tāvakāḥ
11. tyaktātmānaḥ tāvakāḥ mahārathāḥ mahatīm senām praskandya,
vṛkṣān mahāvātāḥ iva sma kampayanti
11. Your (Kaurava) great chariot-warriors (mahārathāḥ), fearless (tyaktātmanāḥ) and having assailed the great army, were shaking it, just as great winds shake trees.
बहवश्चुक्रुशुस्तत्र क्व स राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
भ्रातरो वास्य ते शूरा दृश्यन्ते नेह केचन ॥१२॥
12. bahavaścukruśustatra kva sa rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhrātaro vāsya te śūrā dṛśyante neha kecana.
12. bahavaḥ cukruśuḥ tatra kva saḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhrātaraḥ vā asya te śūrāḥ dṛśyante na iha kecana
12. tatra bahavaḥ cukruśuḥ,
"saḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kva? vā asya te śūrāḥ bhrātaraḥ iha kecana na dṛśyante"
12. Many there cried out, "Where is that King Yudhiṣṭhira? Neither he nor any of his brave brothers are seen here!"
पाञ्चालानां महावीर्याः शिखण्डी च महारथः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽथ शैनेयो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः ॥१३॥
13. pāñcālānāṁ mahāvīryāḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumno'tha śaineyo draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ.
13. pāñcālānām mahāvīryāḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ atha śaineyaḥ draupadeyāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
13. pāñcālānām mahāvīryāḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ atha śaineyaḥ ca draupadeyāḥ sarvaśaḥ
13. Among the greatly valorous warriors of the Pañcālas are Shikhaṇḍī, a great charioteer; Dhṛṣṭadyumna; Śaineya; and all the sons of Draupadī.
एवं तान्वादिनः शूरान्द्रौपदेया महारथाः ।
अभ्यघ्नन्युयुधानश्च मद्रराजपदानुगान् ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ tānvādinaḥ śūrāndraupadeyā mahārathāḥ ,
abhyaghnanyuyudhānaśca madrarājapadānugān.
14. evam tān vādinaḥ śūrān draupadeyāḥ mahārathāḥ
abhyaghnnan yuyudhānaḥ ca madrarājapadānugān
14. evam draupadeyāḥ mahārathāḥ ca yuyudhānaḥ tān
śūrān vādinaḥ madrarājapadānugān abhyaghnnan
14. Thus, the great charioteers, the sons of Draupadī, and Yuyudhāna, struck down those brave opponents who followed the Madra king.
चक्रैर्विमथितैः केचित्केचिच्छिन्नैर्महाध्वजैः ।
प्रत्यदृश्यन्त समरे तावका निहताः परैः ॥१५॥
15. cakrairvimathitaiḥ kecitkecicchinnairmahādhvajaiḥ ,
pratyadṛśyanta samare tāvakā nihatāḥ paraiḥ.
15. cakraiḥ vimathitaiḥ kecit kecit chinnaiḥ mahādhvajaiḥ
pratyadṛśyanta samare tāvakāḥ nihatāḥ paraiḥ
15. samare tāvakāḥ paraiḥ nihatāḥ pratyadṛśyanta.
kecit cakraiḥ vimathitaiḥ (āsann),
kecit mahādhvajaiḥ chinnaiḥ (āsann)
15. In the battle, your men were seen killed by the enemies; some were crushed by chariot wheels, while others had their great banners cut down.
आलोक्य पाण्डवान्युद्धे योधा राजन्समन्ततः ।
वार्यमाणा ययुर्वेगात्तव पुत्रेण भारत ॥१६॥
16. ālokya pāṇḍavānyuddhe yodhā rājansamantataḥ ,
vāryamāṇā yayurvegāttava putreṇa bhārata.
16. ālokya pāṇḍavān yuddhe yodhāḥ rājan samantataḥ
vāryamāṇāḥ yayuḥ vegāt tava putreṇa bhārata
16. rājan bhārata,
yuddhe pāṇḍavān samantataḥ ālokya,
tava putreṇa vāryamāṇāḥ (api) yodhāḥ vegāt yayuḥ
16. O King (rājan), O Bhārata, your warriors, perceiving the Pāṇḍavas everywhere in the battle, despite being restrained by your son, fled swiftly.
दुर्योधनस्तु तान्वीरान्वारयामास सान्त्वयन् ।
न चास्य शासनं कश्चित्तत्र चक्रे महारथः ॥१७॥
17. duryodhanastu tānvīrānvārayāmāsa sāntvayan ,
na cāsya śāsanaṁ kaścittatra cakre mahārathaḥ.
17. duryodhanaḥ tu tān vīrān vārayāmāsa sāntvayan |
na ca asya śāsanam kaścit tatra cakre mahārathaḥ
17. duryodhanaḥ tu tān vīrān sāntvayan vārayāmāsa ca

17. Duryodhana, however, was pacifying and restraining those warriors. But no great charioteer there obeyed his command.
ततो गान्धारराजस्य पुत्रः शकुनिरब्रवीत् ।
दुर्योधनं महाराज वचनं वचनक्षमः ॥१८॥
18. tato gāndhārarājasya putraḥ śakunirabravīt ,
duryodhanaṁ mahārāja vacanaṁ vacanakṣamaḥ.
18. tataḥ gāndhārarājasya putraḥ śakuniḥ abravīt
| duryodhanam mahārāja vacanam vacanakṣamaḥ
18. tataḥ gāndhārarājasya putraḥ vacanakṣamaḥ
śakuniḥ mahārāja duryodhanam vacanam abravīt
18. Then, the son of the Gandhara king, Shakuni, who was skilled in speech, spoke these words to King Duryodhana.
किं नः संप्रेक्षमाणानां मद्राणां हन्यते बलम् ।
न युक्तमेतत्समरे त्वयि तिष्ठति भारत ॥१९॥
19. kiṁ naḥ saṁprekṣamāṇānāṁ madrāṇāṁ hanyate balam ,
na yuktametatsamare tvayi tiṣṭhati bhārata.
19. kim naḥ samprekṣamāṇānām madrāṇām hanyate balam
| na yuktam etat samare tvayi tiṣṭhati bhārata
19. naḥ samprekṣamāṇānām madrāṇām balam kim hanyate? bhārata,
tvayi samare tiṣṭhati etat na yuktam
19. Why is the strength of the Madras being destroyed while we are looking on? This is not proper, O Bharata, while you are standing on the battlefield.
सहितैर्नाम योद्धव्यमित्येष समयः कृतः ।
अथ कस्मात्परानेव घ्नतो मर्षयसे नृप ॥२०॥
20. sahitairnāma yoddhavyamityeṣa samayaḥ kṛtaḥ ,
atha kasmātparāneva ghnato marṣayase nṛpa.
20. sahitaiḥ nāma yoddhavyam iti eṣaḥ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ
| atha kasmāt parān eva ghnataḥ marṣayase nṛpa
20. nāma sahitaiḥ yoddhavyam iti eṣaḥ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ atha nṛpa,
kasmāt parān ghnatas eva marṣayase
20. Indeed, it was agreed that we should fight together – this arrangement was made. So, O King, why do you tolerate the enemies, even as they are killing (our men)?
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
वार्यमाणा मया पूर्वं नैते चक्रुर्वचो मम ।
एते हि निहताः सर्वे प्रस्कन्नाः पाण्डुवाहिनीम् ॥२१॥
21. duryodhana uvāca ,
vāryamāṇā mayā pūrvaṁ naite cakrurvaco mama ,
ete hi nihatāḥ sarve praskannāḥ pāṇḍuvāhinīm.
21. duryodhana uvāca vāryamāṇā mayā pūrvaṁ na ete cakruḥ
vacaḥ mama ete hi nihatāḥ sarve praskannāḥ pāṇḍuvāhinīm
21. duryodhana uvāca mayā pūrvaṁ vāryamāṇāḥ ete mama vacaḥ
na cakruḥ hi ete sarve nihatāḥ pāṇḍuvāhinīm praskannāḥ
21. Duryodhana said: Though previously restrained by me, these (warriors) did not heed my words. Indeed, all of them have been struck down (defeated) and have scattered towards the Pāṇḍava army.
शकुनिरुवाच ।
न भर्तुः शासनं वीरा रणे कुर्वन्त्यमर्षिताः ।
अलं क्रोद्धुं तथैतेषां नायं काल उपेक्षितुम् ॥२२॥
22. śakuniruvāca ,
na bhartuḥ śāsanaṁ vīrā raṇe kurvantyamarṣitāḥ ,
alaṁ kroddhuṁ tathaiteṣāṁ nāyaṁ kāla upekṣitum.
22. śakuniḥ uvāca na bhartuḥ śāsanaṁ vīrāḥ raṇe kurvanti
amarṣitāḥ alam krodhitum tathā eteṣām na ayaṁ kālaḥ upekṣitum
22. śakuniḥ uvāca amarṣitāḥ vīrāḥ raṇe bhartuḥ śāsanaṁ na
kurvanti tathā eteṣām krodhitum alam ayaṁ kālaḥ upekṣitum na
22. Śakuni said: Indeed, exasperated heroes do not follow their master's command in battle. There is no need to be angry at them; this is not the time to neglect (the situation).
यामः सर्वेऽत्र संभूय सवाजिरथकुञ्जराः ।
परित्रातुं महेष्वासान्मद्रराजपदानुगान् ॥२३॥
23. yāmaḥ sarve'tra saṁbhūya savājirathakuñjarāḥ ,
paritrātuṁ maheṣvāsānmadrarājapadānugān.
23. yāmaḥ sarve atra saṁbhūya savājirathakuñjarāḥ
paritrātum maheṣvāsān madrarājapadānugān
23. sarve savājirathakuñjarāḥ saṁbhūya atra yāmaḥ
maheṣvāsān madrarājapadānugān paritrātum
23. Let all of us go there together, with horses, chariots, and elephants, to protect the great archers, the followers of the King of Madras.
अन्योन्यं परिरक्षामो यत्नेन महता नृप ।
एवं सर्वेऽनुसंचिन्त्य प्रययुर्यत्र सैनिकाः ॥२४॥
24. anyonyaṁ parirakṣāmo yatnena mahatā nṛpa ,
evaṁ sarve'nusaṁcintya prayayuryatra sainikāḥ.
24. anyonyam parirakṣāmaḥ yatnena mahatā nṛpa evaṁ
sarve anusaṁcintya prāyayuḥ yatra sainikāḥ
24. nṛpa anyonyam mahatā yatnena parirakṣāmaḥ evaṁ
sarve anusaṁcintya yatra sainikāḥ prāyayuḥ
24. O King, let us protect each other with great effort. Having thus deliberated, all (of them) went to where the warriors were.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्ततो राजा बलेन महता वृतः ।
प्रययौ सिंहनादेन कम्पयन्वै वसुंधराम् ॥२५॥
25. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktastato rājā balena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
prayayau siṁhanādena kampayanvai vasuṁdharām.
25. sañjaya uvāca evam uktaḥ tataḥ rājā balena mahatā
vṛtaḥ prayayau siṃhanādena kampayan vai vasuṃdharām
25. sañjaya uvāca tataḥ evam uktaḥ mahatā balena vṛtaḥ
rājā siṃhanādena vasuṃdharām kampayan vai prayayau
25. Sañjaya said: Having been addressed thus, the king, surrounded by a mighty army, set forth with a lion's roar, indeed causing the earth to tremble.
हत विध्यत गृह्णीत प्रहरध्वं निकृन्तत ।
इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दस्तव सैन्यस्य भारत ॥२६॥
26. hata vidhyata gṛhṇīta praharadhvaṁ nikṛntata ,
ityāsīttumulaḥ śabdastava sainyasya bhārata.
26. hata vidhyata gṛhṇīta praharadhvam nikṛntata
iti āsīt tumulaḥ śabdaḥ tava sainyasya bhārata
26. bhārata hata vidhyata gṛhṇīta praharadhvam
nikṛntata iti tava sainyasya tumulaḥ śabdaḥ āsīt
26. “Kill! Pierce! Seize! Strike! Cut down!” – such was the tumultuous cry of your army, O Bhārata.
पाण्डवास्तु रणे दृष्ट्वा मद्रराजपदानुगान् ।
सहितानभ्यवर्तन्त गुल्ममास्थाय मध्यमम् ॥२७॥
27. pāṇḍavāstu raṇe dṛṣṭvā madrarājapadānugān ,
sahitānabhyavartanta gulmamāsthāya madhyamam.
27. pāṇḍavāḥ tu raṇe dṛṣṭvā madrarājapadānugān
sahitān abhyavartanta gulmam āsthāya madhyamam
27. tu pāṇḍavāḥ raṇe sahitān madrarājapadānugān
dṛṣṭvā madhyamam gulmam āsthāya abhyavartanta
27. But the Pāṇḍavas, having observed the united followers of the Madra king in battle, advanced against them, forming a central tactical formation.
ते मुहूर्ताद्रणे वीरा हस्ताहस्तं विशां पते ।
निहताः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त मद्रराजपदानुगाः ॥२८॥
28. te muhūrtādraṇe vīrā hastāhastaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
nihatāḥ pratyadṛśyanta madrarājapadānugāḥ.
28. te muhūrtāt raṇe vīrāḥ hastāhastam viśām pate
nihatāḥ pratyadṛśyanta madrarājapadānugāḥ
28. viśām pate muhūrtāt raṇe te vīrāḥ madrarājapadānugāḥ
hastāhastam nihatāḥ pratyadṛśyanta
28. O lord of the people, within a moment, those valiant followers of the Madra king were seen slain in hand-to-hand combat on the battlefield.
ततो नः संप्रयातानां हतामित्रास्तरस्विनः ।
हृष्टाः किलकिलाशब्दमकुर्वन्सहिताः परे ॥२९॥
29. tato naḥ saṁprayātānāṁ hatāmitrāstarasvinaḥ ,
hṛṣṭāḥ kilakilāśabdamakurvansahitāḥ pare.
29. tataḥ naḥ samprayātānām hata-amitrāḥ tarasvinaḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ kilakilā-śabdam akurvan sahitāḥ pare

29. Then, as our mighty ones, having slain their enemies, were advancing, others (of our forces), united and joyful, made loud cheering sounds.
अथोत्थितानि रुण्डानि समदृश्यन्त सर्वशः ।
पपात महती चोल्का मध्येनादित्यमण्डलम् ॥३०॥
30. athotthitāni ruṇḍāni samadṛśyanta sarvaśaḥ ,
papāta mahatī colkā madhyenādityamaṇḍalam.

30. Then, headless trunks rose up and were seen everywhere. And a great meteor fell through the middle of the sun's disk.
रथैर्भग्नैर्युगाक्षैश्च निहतैश्च महारथैः ।
अश्वैर्निपतितैश्चैव संछन्नाभूद्वसुंधरा ॥३१॥
31. rathairbhagnairyugākṣaiśca nihataiśca mahārathaiḥ ,
aśvairnipatitaiścaiva saṁchannābhūdvasuṁdharā.

31. The earth became covered with broken chariots, with poles and axles, with slain great warriors, and with fallen horses.
वातायमानैस्तुरगैर्युगासक्तैस्तुरंगमैः ।
अदृश्यन्त महाराज योधास्तत्र रणाजिरे ॥३२॥
32. vātāyamānaisturagairyugāsaktaisturaṁgamaiḥ ,
adṛśyanta mahārāja yodhāstatra raṇājire.

32. O great king, the warriors were seen there on the battlefield, accompanied by horses that were swift as the wind and attached to their yokes.
भग्नचक्रान्रथान्केचिदवहंस्तुरगा रणे ।
रथार्धं केचिदादाय दिशो दश विबभ्रमुः ।
तत्र तत्र च दृश्यन्ते योक्त्रैः श्लिष्टाः स्म वाजिनः ॥३३॥
33. bhagnacakrānrathānkecidavahaṁsturagā raṇe ,
rathārdhaṁ kecidādāya diśo daśa vibabhramuḥ ,
tatra tatra ca dṛśyante yoktraiḥ śliṣṭāḥ sma vājinaḥ.

33. On the battlefield, some horses dragged chariots with broken wheels. Others, taking half a chariot, roamed in the ten directions. And here and there, horses were seen entangled by their harnesses.
रथिनः पतमानाश्च व्यदृश्यन्त नरोत्तम ।
गगनात्प्रच्युताः सिद्धाः पुण्यानामिव संक्षये ॥३४॥
34. rathinaḥ patamānāśca vyadṛśyanta narottama ,
gaganātpracyutāḥ siddhāḥ puṇyānāmiva saṁkṣaye.

34. And fallen charioteers were seen, O best of men, like Siddhas fallen from the heavens at the exhaustion of their merits.
निहतेषु च शूरेषु मद्रराजानुगेषु च ।
अस्मानापततश्चापि दृष्ट्वा पार्था महारथाः ॥३५॥
35. nihateṣu ca śūreṣu madrarājānugeṣu ca ,
asmānāpatataścāpi dṛṣṭvā pārthā mahārathāḥ.

āpatataḥ ca api dṛṣṭvā pārthāḥ mahārathāḥ

35. And when the brave warriors and the followers of the Madra king were slain, and seeing us charging upon them, the great charioteers (mahārathas), the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas)...
अभ्यवर्तन्त वेगेन जयगृध्राः प्रहारिणः ।
बाणशब्दरवान्कृत्वा विमिश्राञ्शङ्खनिस्वनैः ॥३६॥
36. abhyavartanta vegena jayagṛdhrāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
bāṇaśabdaravānkṛtvā vimiśrāñśaṅkhanisvanaiḥ.

36. ...they (the Pārthas and mahārathas from the previous verse) turned back swiftly, striking and eager for victory, producing loud roars from their arrows mingled with the sounds of conch shells.
अस्मांस्तु पुनरासाद्य लब्धलक्षाः प्रहारिणः ।
शरासनानि धुन्वानाः सिंहनादान्प्रचुक्रुशुः ॥३७॥
37. asmāṁstu punarāsādya labdhalakṣāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
śarāsanāni dhunvānāḥ siṁhanādānpracukruśuḥ.

37. Having again approached us, the attackers, who had found their target, twanged their bows and roared lion-like roars.
ततो हतमभिप्रेक्ष्य मद्रराजबलं महत् ।
मद्रराजं च समरे दृष्ट्वा शूरं निपातितम् ।
दुर्योधनबलं सर्वं पुनरासीत्पराङ्मुखम् ॥३८॥
38. tato hatamabhiprekṣya madrarājabalaṁ mahat ,
madrarājaṁ ca samare dṛṣṭvā śūraṁ nipātitam ,
duryodhanabalaṁ sarvaṁ punarāsītparāṅmukham.

mahat madrarājam ca samare
dṛṣṭvā śūram nipātitam duryodhanabalam
sarvam punaḥ āsīt parāṅmukham

38. Then, seeing the great army of the Madra king slain, and seeing the heroic Madra king himself fallen in battle, Duryodhana's entire army again turned away.
वध्यमानं महाराज पाण्डवैर्जितकाशिभिः ।
दिशो भेजेऽथ संभ्रान्तं त्रासितं दृढधन्विभिः ॥३९॥
39. vadhyamānaṁ mahārāja pāṇḍavairjitakāśibhiḥ ,
diśo bheje'tha saṁbhrāntaṁ trāsitaṁ dṛḍhadhanvibhiḥ.

bheje atha saṃbhrāntam trāsitam dṛḍhadhanvibhiḥ
39. mahārāja,
jitakāśibhiḥ dṛḍhadhanvibhiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ vadhyamānam saṃbhrāntam trāsitam (tat balam) atha diśaḥ bheje
39. O great king, being slain by the Pandavas, who shone with victory, and terrified and bewildered by those with strong bows, it (Duryodhana's army) then fled in all directions.
