Vaiśampāyana said: While all those kings were seated and had become silent, Kṛṣṇa, who possessed fine teeth and a voice like a war-drum, began to speak.

Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa), having looked at Dhṛtarāṣṭra, then spoke to the entire assembly, making himself heard like a cloud at the end of the summer season.

O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), this family (yours), today, is the most excellent among all royal lineages. It is endowed with learning and good conduct, and complete with all good qualities.

O King, abide by "dharma" (natural law) and "artha" (prosperity), protected by the Pāṇḍavas. For indeed, those (Pāṇḍavas) who have become so (powerful/well-established) are not conquerable even with effort, O lord of men.

Indeed, all of them - the Pandavas and your own sons - are brave, adept in wielding weapons, and eager for battle. Therefore, protect them from great danger.

O best among the Bharatas, you must uphold that agreement of ours, just as we, who have remained steadfast, have done. O King, by enduring constant affliction, we hope to obtain our share of the kingdom.

May your honor behave towards us like a mother and father. O descendant of Bharata, the duty (vṛtti) of a respected elder (guru) is more weighty, and so also is the duty of a disciple.

47.
O best of Bharatas, your sons address this assembly. What is happening here is not considered right by the assembly members who understand natural law (dharma); indeed, it is improper.
यत्र धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण सत्यं यत्रानृतेन च ।

हन्यते प्रेक्षमाणानां हतास्तत्र सभासदः ॥४८॥

ca hanyate prekṣamāṇānām hatāḥ tatra sabhāsadaḥ
ca hanyate prekṣamāṇānām hatāḥ tatra sabhāsadaḥ
48.
Indeed, where natural law (dharma) is destroyed by unrighteousness, and truth by falsehood, those assembly members who merely watch are themselves destroyed.
विद्धो धर्मो ह्यधर्मेण सभां यत्र प्रपद्यते ।

kṛntanti viddhāḥ tatra sabhāsadaḥ
dharmaḥ etān ārujati yathā nadī anukūlajān
49.
Indeed, where natural law (dharma), wounded by unrighteousness, enters the assembly, and the assembly members do not remove its piercing 'thorn', then those assembly members themselves become wounded. Natural law (dharma) crushes them, just as a river devastates the trees growing along its banks.

50.
O best among the Bhāratas, those who remain silent, observing and contemplating (dhyāna) the natural law (dharma), they truly declare what is rightful and just (dharma).

O lord of men, what else can be said to them apart from giving? Let the kings who are assembled in this assembly speak. If I speak the truth, it is only after thoroughly considering both natural law (dharma) and material prosperity (artha).
