42. We were firmly convinced that you, our father, would uphold that agreement. (But) we did not say anything against the agreement, dear one; and the Brahmins also know this about us.
43. tasminnaḥ samaye tiṣṭha sthitānāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
nityaṁ saṁkleśitā rājansvarājyāṁśaṁ labhemahi.
43. tasmin naḥ samaye tiṣṭha sthitānām bharatarṣabha
nityam saṃkleśitāḥ rājan svarājya aṃśam labhemahi
43. O best among the Bharatas, you must uphold that agreement of ours, just as we, who have remained steadfast, have done. O King, by enduring constant affliction, we hope to obtain our share of the kingdom.
44. tvaṁ dharmamarthaṁ yuñjānaḥ samyaṅnastrātumarhasi ,
gurutvaṁ bhavati prekṣya bahūnkleśāṁstitikṣmahe.
44. tvam dharmam artham yuñjānaḥ samyak naḥ trātum arhasi
gurutvam bhavati prekṣya bahūn kleśān titikṣmahe
44. By rightly upholding both natural law (dharma) and material prosperity, you ought to protect us completely. Considering your status as a respected elder (guru), we endure many afflictions.
45. sa bhavānmātṛpitṛvadasmāsu pratipadyatām ,
gurorgarīyasī vṛttiryā ca śiṣyasya bhārata.
45. saḥ bhavān mātṛpitṛvat asmāsu pratipadyatām
guroḥ garīyasī vṛttiḥ yā ca śiṣyasya bhārata
45. May your honor behave towards us like a mother and father. O descendant of Bharata, the duty (vṛtti) of a respected elder (guru) is more weighty, and so also is the duty of a disciple.
46. pitrā sthāpayitavyā hi vayamutpathamāsthitāḥ ,

46. pitrā sthāpayitavyāḥ hi vayam utpatham āsthitāḥ
saṃsthāpaya pathiṣu asmān tiṣṭha rājan svavartmani
46. Indeed, we, who have strayed onto the wrong path, should be guided by our father. O king, set us on the right paths, and you yourself remain on your own proper course (dharma).
47. āhuścemāṁ pariṣadaṁ putrāste bharatarṣabha ,
dharmajñeṣu sabhāsatsu neha yuktamasāṁpratam.
47. āhuḥ ca imām pariṣadam putrāḥ te bharatarṣabha
dharmajñeṣu sabhāsatsu na iha yuktam asāṃpratam
47. O best of Bharatas, your sons address this assembly. What is happening here is not considered right by the assembly members who understand natural law (dharma); indeed, it is improper.
48. yatra dharmo hyadharmeṇa satyaṁ yatrānṛtena ca ,

48. yatra dharmaḥ hi adharmeṇa satyam yatra anṛtena
ca hanyate prekṣamāṇānām hatāḥ tatra sabhāsadaḥ
48. Indeed, where natural law (dharma) is destroyed by unrighteousness, and truth by falsehood, those assembly members who merely watch are themselves destroyed.
49. viddho dharmo hyadharmeṇa sabhāṁ yatra prapadyate ,
na cāsya śalyaṁ kṛntanti viddhāstatra sabhāsadaḥ ,

yatra prapadyate na ca asya śalyam
kṛntanti viddhāḥ tatra sabhāsadaḥ
dharmaḥ etān ārujati yathā nadī anukūlajān
49. Indeed, where natural law (dharma), wounded by unrighteousness, enters the assembly, and the assembly members do not remove its piercing 'thorn', then those assembly members themselves become wounded. Natural law (dharma) crushes them, just as a river devastates the trees growing along its banks.
50. ye dharmamanupaśyantastūṣṇīṁ dhyāyanta āsate ,

50. ye dharmam anupaśyantaḥ tūṣṇīm dhyāyantaḥ āsate |
te satyam āhuḥ dharmam ca nyāyyam ca bharatarṣabha
50. O best among the Bhāratas, those who remain silent, observing and contemplating (dhyāna) the natural law (dharma), they truly declare what is rightful and just (dharma).

51. śakyam kim anyat vaktum te dānāt anyat
janeśvara | bruvantu vā mahīpālāḥ
sabhāyām ye samāsate | dharmārthau
saṃpradhārya eva yadi satyam bravīmi aham
51. O lord of men, what else can be said to them apart from giving? Let the kings who are assembled in this assembly speak. If I speak the truth, it is only after thoroughly considering both natural law (dharma) and material prosperity (artha).

52. pramuñca imān mṛtyupāśāt kṣatriyān kṣatriyarṣabha
| praśāmya bharataśreṣṭha mā manyuvaśam anvagāḥ
52. O best of Kṣatriyas, release these Kṣatriyas from the noose of death. O best of Bharatas, calm down; do not succumb to the power of anger.

53. pitryam tebhyaḥ pradāya aṃśam pāṇḍavebhyaḥ yathā ucitam
| tataḥ saputraḥ siddhārthaḥ bhuṅkṣva bhogān paraṃtapa
53. O scorcher of foes, having given the paternal (pitrya) share to the Pāṇḍavas as is proper, then you, along with your sons, will have achieved your purpose and can enjoy pleasures.
54. ajātaśatruṁ jānīṣe sthitaṁ dharme satāṁ sadā ,

54. ajātaśatrum jānīṣe sthitam dharme satām sadā
saputre tvayi vṛttim ca vartate yām narādhipa
54. O king, you know that Ajatashatru (Yudhishthira) always remains established in the natural law (dharma) followed by the virtuous. And you know the way he conducts himself towards you and your sons.
55. dāhitaśca nirastaśca tvāmevopāśritaḥ punaḥ ,
indraprasthaṁ tvayaivāsau saputreṇa vivāsitaḥ.
55. dāhitaḥ ca nirastaḥ ca tvām eva upāśritaḥ punaḥ
indraprastham tvayā eva asau saputreṇa vivāsitaḥ
55. Though he was afflicted and rejected, he sought refuge with you again. Yet, you, along with your sons, exiled him from Indrapraṣṭha.
56. sa tatra nivasansarvānvaśamānīya pārthivān ,

56. saḥ tatra nivasān sarvān vaśam ānīya pārthivān
tvanmukhān akarot rājan na ca tvām atyavartata
56. O king, while residing there (in Indrapraṣṭha), he brought all kings under his sway, making you their leader, and he never acted against you.
57. tasyaivaṁ vartamānasya saubalena jihīrṣatā ,

57. tasya evam vartamānasya saubalena jihīrṣatā
rāṣṭrāṇi dhanadhānyam ca prayuktaḥ paramopadhiḥ
57. While he (Yudhishthira) was thus conducting himself, Saubala (Shakuni), desiring to seize his kingdoms, wealth, and grain, employed a supreme stratagem against him.
58. sa tāmavasthāṁ saṁprāpya kṛṣṇāṁ prekṣya sabhāgatām ,

58. saḥ tām avasthām samprāpya kṛṣṇām prekṣya sabhāgatām
kṣatradharmāt ameyātmā na akampata yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
58. Having reached that difficult situation and having seen Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā) present in the assembly, Yudhiṣṭhira, whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable, did not waver from his warrior's intrinsic nature (dharma).
59. ahaṁ tu tava teṣāṁ ca śreya icchāmi bhārata ,

59. aham tu tava teṣām ca śreyaḥ icchāmi bhārata
dharmāt arthāt sukhāt ca eva mā rājan nīnaśaḥ prajāḥ
59. O descendant of Bharata, I indeed desire your welfare and theirs. O King, do not destroy the people by neglecting (your intrinsic nature of) righteousness (dharma), wealth (artha), and happiness (sukha) alike.

yat te pathyatamam rājan tasmin tiṣṭha paramtapa
61. The Pāṇḍavas are ready to serve, and those subduers of enemies are also ready to fight. O King, O scorcher of foes, stand firm in whatever is most beneficial for you.

62. tat vākyam pārthivāḥ sarve hṛdayaiḥ sam apūjayan
na tatra kaścit vaktum hi vācam prākrāmat agrataḥ
62. All the kings wholeheartedly honored that statement. Indeed, no one there dared to utter a word in opposition.
