वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा बहुविधैः शब्दैर्नाद्यमाना गिरेर्गुहाः ।
अजातशत्रुः कौन्तेयो माद्रीपुत्रावुभावपि ॥१॥

धौम्यः कृष्णा च विप्राश्च सर्वे च सुहृदस्तथा ।
भीमसेनमपश्यन्तः सर्वे विमनसोऽभवन् ॥२॥

bhīmasenamapaśyantaḥ sarve vimanaso'bhavan.

2. Dhaumya, Draupadi (Kṛṣṇā), the Brahmins, and all their well-wishers became disheartened when they could not find Bhimasena.
द्रौपदीमार्ष्टिषेणाय प्रदाय तु महारथाः ।
सहिताः सायुधाः शूराः शैलमारुरुहुस्तदा ॥३॥
3. draupadīmārṣṭiṣeṇāya pradāya tu mahārathāḥ ,
sahitāḥ sāyudhāḥ śūrāḥ śailamāruruhustadā.

3. Entrusting Draupadi to Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, the great and valiant warriors, fully armed, then ascended the mountain together.
ततः संप्राप्य शैलाग्रं वीक्षमाणा महारथाः ।
ददृशुस्ते महेष्वासा भीमसेनमरिंदमम् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ saṁprāpya śailāgraṁ vīkṣamāṇā mahārathāḥ ,
dadṛśuste maheṣvāsā bhīmasenamariṁdamam.

dadṛśuḥ te maheṣvāsāḥ bhīmasenam ariṃdamam
4. Then, upon reaching the mountain peak, those great warriors and mighty archers looked around and saw Bhimasena, the vanquisher of enemies.
स्फुरतश्च महाकायान्गतसत्त्वांश्च राक्षसान् ।
महाबलान्महाघोरान्भीमसेनेन पातितान् ॥५॥
5. sphurataśca mahākāyāngatasattvāṁśca rākṣasān ,
mahābalānmahāghorānbhīmasenena pātitān.

5. They saw the immense-bodied Rākṣasas, tremendously powerful and exceedingly dreadful, who, though twitching, were now lifeless, having been slain by Bhimasena.
शुशुभे स महाबाहुर्गदाखड्गधनुर्धरः ।
निहत्य समरे सर्वान्दानवान्मघवानिव ॥६॥
6. śuśubhe sa mahābāhurgadākhaḍgadhanurdharaḥ ,
nihatya samare sarvāndānavānmaghavāniva.
6. śuśubhe saḥ mahābāhuḥ gadākhaḍgadhanurdharaḥ
nihatya samare sarvān dānavān maghavān iva
6. That mighty-armed one, holding a mace, sword, and bow, shone brilliantly, just like Indra (Maghavān) after slaying all the dānavās (demons) in battle.
ततस्ते समतिक्रम्य परिष्वज्य वृकोदरम् ।
तत्रोपविविशुः पार्थाः प्राप्ता गतिमनुत्तमाम् ॥७॥
7. tataste samatikramya pariṣvajya vṛkodaram ,
tatropaviviśuḥ pārthāḥ prāptā gatimanuttamām.
7. tataḥ te samatikramya pariṣvajya vṛkodaram
tatra upaviviśuḥ pārthāḥ prāptāḥ gatim anuttamām
7. Thereafter, having passed by and embraced Vṛkodara (Bhīma), the Pāṇḍavas sat down there, having achieved the supreme state.
तैश्चतुर्भिर्महेष्वासैर्गिरिशृङ्गमशोभत ।
लोकपालैर्महाभागैर्दिवं देववरैरिव ॥८॥
8. taiścaturbhirmaheṣvāsairgiriśṛṅgamaśobhata ,
lokapālairmahābhāgairdivaṁ devavarairiva.
8. taiḥ caturbhiḥ maheṣvāsaiḥ giriśṛṅgam aśobhata
lokapālaiḥ mahābhāgaiḥ divam devavaraiḥ iva
8. That mountain peak shone brilliantly with those four great archers, just as heaven appears with the glorious world-guardians (lokapālas), who are the foremost among the gods.
कुबेरसदनं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसांश्च निपातितान् ।
भ्राता भ्रातरमासीनमभ्यभाषत पाण्डवम् ॥९॥
9. kuberasadanaṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasāṁśca nipātitān ,
bhrātā bhrātaramāsīnamabhyabhāṣata pāṇḍavam.
9. kuberasadanam dṛṣṭvā rākṣasān ca nipātitān
bhrātā bhrātaram āsīnam abhyabhāṣata pāṇḍavam
9. After seeing Kubera's abode and the slain rākṣasās (demons), the brother addressed his Pāṇḍava brother who was seated.
साहसाद्यदि वा मोहाद्भीम पापमिदं कृतम् ।
नैतत्ते सदृशं वीर मुनेरिव मृषावचः ॥१०॥
10. sāhasādyadi vā mohādbhīma pāpamidaṁ kṛtam ,
naitatte sadṛśaṁ vīra muneriva mṛṣāvacaḥ.
10. sāhasāt yadi vā mohāt bhīma pāpam idam kṛtam
na etat te sadṛśam vīra muneḥ iva mṛṣā vacaḥ
10. O Bhima, if this sinful act was committed out of rashness or delusion, it is not fitting for you, O hero. It is like a sage uttering a falsehood.
राजद्विष्टं न कर्तव्यमिति धर्मविदो विदुः ।
त्रिदशानामिदं द्विष्टं भीमसेन त्वया कृतम् ॥११॥
11. rājadviṣṭaṁ na kartavyamiti dharmavido viduḥ ,
tridaśānāmidaṁ dviṣṭaṁ bhīmasena tvayā kṛtam.
11. rājadviṣṭam na kartavyam iti dharmavidaḥ viduḥ
tridaśānām idam dviṣṭam bhīmasena tvayā kṛtam
11. Those who know natural law (dharma) understand that actions hostile to the king should not be performed. O Bhimasena, this act, which is also hostile to the gods (tridaśa), has been committed by you.
अर्थधर्मावनादृत्य यः पापे कुरुते मनः ।
कर्मणां पार्थ पापानां स फलं विन्दते ध्रुवम् ।
पुनरेवं न कर्तव्यं मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥१२॥
12. arthadharmāvanādṛtya yaḥ pāpe kurute manaḥ ,
karmaṇāṁ pārtha pāpānāṁ sa phalaṁ vindate dhruvam ,
punarevaṁ na kartavyaṁ mama cedicchasi priyam.
12. artha-dharmau anādṛtya yaḥ pāpe kurute
manaḥ karmaṇām pārtha pāpānām sa
phalam vindate dhruvam punar evam
na kartavyam mama cet icchasi priyam
12. O Pārtha, whoever disregards material prosperity and natural law (dharma) and sets his mind on sin, he surely obtains the consequences of those sinful actions. If you wish for what is dear to me, you must not do this again.
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा भ्राता भ्रातरमच्युतम् ।
अर्थतत्त्वविभागज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
विरराम महातेजास्तमेवार्थं विचिन्तयन् ॥१३॥
13. evamuktvā sa dharmātmā bhrātā bhrātaramacyutam ,
arthatattvavibhāgajñaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
virarāma mahātejāstamevārthaṁ vicintayan.
13. evam uktvā sa dharmātmā bhrātā
bhrātaram acyutam arthatattvavibhāgajñaḥ
kuntīputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ virarāma
mahātejāḥ tam eva artham vicintayan
13. Having spoken in this manner, that greatly glorious, righteous-souled (dharmātmā) brother, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, who understood the distinctions of true principles (artha-tattva), paused, contemplating that very matter concerning his unswerving brother (Acyuta).
ततस्तु हतशिष्टा ये भीमसेनेन राक्षसाः ।
सहिताः प्रत्यपद्यन्त कुबेरसदनं प्रति ॥१४॥
14. tatastu hataśiṣṭā ye bhīmasenena rākṣasāḥ ,
sahitāḥ pratyapadyanta kuberasadanaṁ prati.
14. tataḥ tu hataśiṣṭāḥ ye bhīmasenena rākṣasāḥ
sahitāḥ pratyapadyanta kuberasadanam prati
14. Then, the Rākṣasas who had survived the attack by Bhimasena, gathered together and returned to Kubera's abode.
ते जवेन महावेगाः प्राप्य वैश्रवणालयम् ।
भीममार्तस्वरं चक्रुर्भीमसेनभयार्दिताः ॥१५॥
15. te javena mahāvegāḥ prāpya vaiśravaṇālayam ,
bhīmamārtasvaraṁ cakrurbhīmasenabhayārditāḥ.
15. te javena mahāvegāḥ prāpya vaiśravaṇālayam
bhīmaārtasvaram cakruḥ bhīmasenabhayārditāḥ
15. Having reached Kubera's abode with great speed, those swift Rākṣasas, tormented by fear of Bhimasena, let out a terrible cry of anguish.
न्यस्तशस्त्रायुधाः श्रान्ताः शोणिताक्तपरिच्छदाः ।
प्रकीर्णमूर्धजा राजन्यक्षाधिपतिमब्रुवन् ॥१६॥
16. nyastaśastrāyudhāḥ śrāntāḥ śoṇitāktaparicchadāḥ ,
prakīrṇamūrdhajā rājanyakṣādhipatimabruvan.
16. nyastaśastrāyudhāḥ śrāntāḥ śoṇitāktaparicchadāḥ
prakīrṇamūrdhajā rājan yakṣādhipatim abruvan
16. With their weapons laid aside, exhausted, their clothes smeared with blood, and their hair disheveled, they addressed the lord of the Yakṣas, saying, "O King!"
गदापरिघनिस्त्रिंशतोमरप्रासयोधिनः ।
राक्षसा निहताः सर्वे तव देव पुरःसराः ॥१७॥
17. gadāparighanistriṁśatomaraprāsayodhinaḥ ,
rākṣasā nihatāḥ sarve tava deva puraḥsarāḥ.

rākṣasāḥ nihatāḥ sarve tava deva puraḥsarāḥ
17. "O divine lord, all your leading Rākṣasa warriors, who fought with maces, iron clubs, swords, lances, and spears, have been slain."
प्रमृद्य तरसा शैलं मानुषेण धनेश्वर ।
एकेन सहिताः संख्ये हताः क्रोधवशा गणाः ॥१८॥
18. pramṛdya tarasā śailaṁ mānuṣeṇa dhaneśvara ,
ekena sahitāḥ saṁkhye hatāḥ krodhavaśā gaṇāḥ.
18. pramṛdya tarasā śailam mānuṣeṇa dhaneśvara
ekena sahitāḥ saṃkhye hatāḥ krodhavaśāḥ gaṇāḥ
18. O lord of wealth, your angry hosts, who had assembled for battle, were killed by a single human who forcefully crushed the mountain.
प्रवरा रक्षसेन्द्राणां यक्षाणां च धनाधिप ।
शेरते निहता देव गतसत्त्वाः परासवः ॥१९॥
19. pravarā rakṣasendrāṇāṁ yakṣāṇāṁ ca dhanādhipa ,
śerate nihatā deva gatasattvāḥ parāsavaḥ.
19. pravarāḥ rakṣasendrāṇām yakṣāṇām ca dhanādhipa
śerate nihatāḥ deva gatasattvāḥ parāsavaḥ
19. O lord of wealth (dhanādhipa) and god (deva), the foremost among the Rākṣasa chiefs and Yakṣas lie slain, their vitality gone, their life-breaths departed.
लब्धः शैलो वयं मुक्ता मणिमांस्ते सखा हतः ।
मानुषेण कृतं कर्म विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥२०॥
20. labdhaḥ śailo vayaṁ muktā maṇimāṁste sakhā hataḥ ,
mānuṣeṇa kṛtaṁ karma vidhatsva yadanantaram.
20. labdhaḥ śailaḥ vayam muktāḥ maṇimān te sakhā
hataḥ mānuṣeṇa kṛtam karma vidhatsva yat anantaram
20. The mountain has been obtained, and we are spared, but your friend Maṇimān has been killed. Now, decide what action (karma) should be taken next regarding this deed done by a human.
स तच्छ्रुत्वा तु संक्रुद्धः सर्वयक्षगणाधिपः ।
कोपसंरक्तनयनः कथमित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥२१॥
21. sa tacchrutvā tu saṁkruddhaḥ sarvayakṣagaṇādhipaḥ ,
kopasaṁraktanayanaḥ kathamityabravīdvacaḥ.
21. sa tat śrutvā tu saṃkruddhaḥ sarvayakṣagaṇādhipaḥ
kopasaṃraktanayanaḥ katham iti abravīt vacaḥ
21. Having heard that, the greatly enraged lord of all Yakṣa hosts, his eyes red with anger, spoke these words: 'How can this be?'
द्वितीयमपराध्यन्तं भीमं श्रुत्वा धनेश्वरः ।
चुक्रोध यक्षाधिपतिर्युज्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. dvitīyamaparādhyantaṁ bhīmaṁ śrutvā dhaneśvaraḥ ,
cukrodha yakṣādhipatiryujyatāmiti cābravīt.
22. dvitīyam aparādhyantam bhīmam śrutvā dhaneśvaraḥ
cukrodha yakṣādhipatiḥ yujyatām iti ca abravīt
22. Having heard that Bhima was offending for the second time, Kubera, the lord of wealth and chief of the Yakshas, became angry and said, "Let it be yoked!"
अथाभ्रघनसंकाशं गिरिकूटमिवोच्छ्रितम् ।
हयैः संयोजयामासुर्गान्धर्वैरुत्तमं रथम् ॥२३॥
23. athābhraghanasaṁkāśaṁ girikūṭamivocchritam ,
hayaiḥ saṁyojayāmāsurgāndharvairuttamaṁ ratham.
23. atha abhraghanasaṃkāśam girikūṭam iva ucchritam
hayaiḥ saṃyojayāmāsuḥ gāndharvaiḥ uttamam ratham
23. Then, they yoked an excellent chariot, which resembled a dense cloud and was lofty like a mountain peak, with Gandharva horses.
तस्य सर्वगुणोपेता विमलाक्षा हयोत्तमाः ।
तेजोबलजवोपेता नानारत्नविभूषिताः ॥२४॥
24. tasya sarvaguṇopetā vimalākṣā hayottamāḥ ,
tejobalajavopetā nānāratnavibhūṣitāḥ.
24. tasya sarvaguṇopetāḥ vimalākṣāḥ hayottamāḥ
tejobalajavopetāḥ nānāratnavibhūṣitāḥ
24. Its excellent horses were endowed with all good qualities, had clear eyes, possessed splendor, strength, and speed, and were adorned with various jewels.
शोभमाना रथे युक्तास्तरिष्यन्त इवाशुगाः ।
हर्षयामासुरन्योन्यमिङ्गितैर्विजयावहैः ॥२५॥
25. śobhamānā rathe yuktāstariṣyanta ivāśugāḥ ,
harṣayāmāsuranyonyamiṅgitairvijayāvahaiḥ.
25. śobhamānāḥ rathe yuktāḥ tariṣyantaḥ iva āśugāḥ
harṣayāmāsuḥ anyonyam iṅgitaiḥ vijayāvahaiḥ
25. Yoked in the chariot, they appeared beautiful, as if they were swift-goers ready to fly. They delighted each other with gestures that promised victory.
स तमास्थाय भगवान्राजराजो महारथम् ।
प्रययौ देवगन्धर्वैः स्तूयमानो महाद्युतिः ॥२६॥
26. sa tamāsthāya bhagavānrājarājo mahāratham ,
prayayau devagandharvaiḥ stūyamāno mahādyutiḥ.
26. saḥ tam āsthāya bhagavān rājarājaḥ mahāratham
prayayau devagandharvaiḥ stūyamānaḥ mahādyutiḥ
26. The glorious (bhagavān) king of kings (rājarājaḥ), of great splendor, mounted that great chariot (mahāratha) and departed, being praised by the gods and gandharvas.
तं प्रयान्तं महात्मानं सर्वयक्षधनाधिपम् ।
रक्ताक्षा हेमसंकाशा महाकाया महाबलाः ॥२७॥
27. taṁ prayāntaṁ mahātmānaṁ sarvayakṣadhanādhipam ,
raktākṣā hemasaṁkāśā mahākāyā mahābalāḥ.
27. tam prayāntam mahātmānam sarvayakṣadhanādhipam
raktākṣāḥ hemasaṃkāśāḥ mahākāyāḥ mahābalāḥ
27. As that great-souled one (mahātman), the lord of all Yakṣas and wealth, was departing, (Yakṣas) with red eyes, golden hue, colossal bodies, and immense strength...
सायुधा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशा यक्षा दशशतायुताः ।
जवेन महता वीराः परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥२८॥
28. sāyudhā baddhanistriṁśā yakṣā daśaśatāyutāḥ ,
javena mahatā vīrāḥ parivāryopatasthire.
28. sāyudhāḥ baddhanistriṃśāḥ yakṣāḥ daśaśatāyutāḥ
javena mahatā vīrāḥ parivārya upatasthire
28. Millions of armed Yakṣas, with swords tied (to their belts), red-eyed, golden-hued, colossal-bodied, greatly powerful, and valiant, swiftly surrounded and attended him.
तं महान्तमुपायान्तं धनेश्वरमुपान्तिके ।
ददृशुर्हृष्टरोमाणः पाण्डवाः प्रियदर्शनम् ॥२९॥
29. taṁ mahāntamupāyāntaṁ dhaneśvaramupāntike ,
dadṛśurhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ priyadarśanam.
29. tam mahāntam upāyāntam dhaneśvaram upāntike
dadṛśuḥ hṛṣṭaromaṇaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ priyadarśanam
29. The Pāṇḍavas, with their hair standing on end (thrilled), saw the great lord of wealth (dhaneśvara), who had a pleasing appearance, approaching nearby.
कुबेरस्तु महासत्त्वान्पाण्डोः पुत्रान्महारथान् ।
आत्तकार्मुकनिस्त्रिंशान्दृष्ट्वा प्रीतोऽभवत्तदा ॥३०॥
30. kuberastu mahāsattvānpāṇḍoḥ putrānmahārathān ,
āttakārmukanistriṁśāndṛṣṭvā prīto'bhavattadā.
30. kuberaḥ tu mahāsattvān pāṇḍoḥ putrān mahārathān
āttakārmukanistriṃśān dṛṣṭvā prītaḥ abhavat tadā
30. But Kubera, seeing the mighty, great-souled sons of Pandu — those great charioteers who had taken up their bows and swords — became pleased at that moment.
ते पक्षिण इवोत्पत्य गिरेः शृङ्गं महाजवाः ।
तस्थुस्तेषां समभ्याशे धनेश्वरपुरःसराः ॥३१॥
31. te pakṣiṇa ivotpatya gireḥ śṛṅgaṁ mahājavāḥ ,
tasthusteṣāṁ samabhyāśe dhaneśvarapuraḥsarāḥ.
31. te pakṣiṇaḥ iva utpatya gireḥ śṛṅgam mahājavāḥ
tasthuḥ teṣām samabhyāśe dhaneśvarapuraḥsarāḥ
31. Like swift birds, they flew up to the mountain peak and stood near the retinue of Kubera, who was the lord of wealth.
ततस्तं हृष्टमनसं पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ।
समीक्ष्य यक्षगन्धर्वा निर्विकारा व्यवस्थिताः ॥३२॥
32. tatastaṁ hṛṣṭamanasaṁ pāṇḍavānprati bhārata ,
samīkṣya yakṣagandharvā nirvikārā vyavasthitāḥ.
32. tataḥ tam hṛṣṭamanasam pāṇḍavān prati bhārata
samīkṣya yakṣagandharvāḥ nirvikārāḥ vyavasthitāḥ
32. Then, O Bhārata, the Yakshas and Gandharvas, observing Kubera's joyful state of mind concerning the Pandavas, remained unperturbed.
पाण्डवाश्च महात्मानः प्रणम्य धनदं प्रभुम् ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च धर्मपुत्रश्च धर्मवित् ॥३३॥
33. pāṇḍavāśca mahātmānaḥ praṇamya dhanadaṁ prabhum ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca dharmaputraśca dharmavit.
33. pāṇḍavāḥ ca mahātmānaḥ praṇamya dhanadam prabhum
nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca dharmaputraḥ ca dharmavit
33. And the great-souled Pandavas, having bowed down to Kubera, the lord and giver of wealth, were Nakula, Sahadeva, and Yudhishthira, the son of (dharma) natural law and a knower of (dharma) natural law.
अपराद्धमिवात्मानं मन्यमाना महारथाः ।
तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे परिवार्य धनेश्वरम् ॥३४॥
34. aparāddhamivātmānaṁ manyamānā mahārathāḥ ,
tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve parivārya dhaneśvaram.
34. aparāddham iva ātmānam manyamānāḥ mahārathāḥ
tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve parivārya dhaneśvaram
34. All the great warriors, considering themselves as if they had wronged their own selves (ātman), stood with folded hands, surrounding Kubera, the lord of wealth.
शय्यासनवरं श्रीमत्पुष्पकं विश्वकर्मणा ।
विहितं चित्रपर्यन्तमातिष्ठत धनाधिपः ॥३५॥
35. śayyāsanavaraṁ śrīmatpuṣpakaṁ viśvakarmaṇā ,
vihitaṁ citraparyantamātiṣṭhata dhanādhipaḥ.
35. śayyāsanavaram śrīmatpuṣpakam viśvakarmaṇā
vihitam citraparyantam ātiṣṭhata dhanādhipaḥ
35. The lord of wealth (Kubera) sat upon the glorious, excellent couch-seat, Puspaka, which was fashioned by Viśvakarma with splendid borders.
तमासीनं महाकायाः शङ्कुकर्णा महाजवाः ।
उपोपविविशुर्यक्षा राक्षसाश्च सहस्रशः ॥३६॥
36. tamāsīnaṁ mahākāyāḥ śaṅkukarṇā mahājavāḥ ,
upopaviviśuryakṣā rākṣasāśca sahasraśaḥ.
36. tam āsīnam mahākāyāḥ śaṅkukarnāḥ mahājavāḥ
upopaviviśuḥ yakṣāḥ rākṣasāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
36. As he (Kubera) sat there, thousands of huge-bodied, cone-eared, and mighty-speeded Yakshas and Rakshasas sat down around him.
शतशश्चापि गन्धर्वास्तथैवाप्सरसां गणाः ।
परिवार्योपतिष्ठन्त यथा देवाः शतक्रतुम् ॥३७॥
37. śataśaścāpi gandharvāstathaivāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
parivāryopatiṣṭhanta yathā devāḥ śatakratum.
37. śataśaḥ ca api gandharvāḥ tathā eva apsarasām
gaṇāḥ parivārya upatiṣṭhanta yathā devāḥ śatakratum
37. And also, hundreds of Gandharvas and, similarly, hosts of Apsaras attended him, surrounding him just as the gods attend Indra (śatakratu).
काञ्चनीं शिरसा बिभ्रद्भीमसेनः स्रजं शुभाम् ।
बाणखड्गधनुष्पाणिरुदैक्षत धनाधिपम् ॥३८॥
38. kāñcanīṁ śirasā bibhradbhīmasenaḥ srajaṁ śubhām ,
bāṇakhaḍgadhanuṣpāṇirudaikṣata dhanādhipam.
38. kāñcanīṃ śirasā bibhrat bhīmasenaḥ srajam śubhām
| bāṇakhaḍgadhanuṣpāṇiḥ udaikṣata dhanādhipam
38. Bhimasena, wearing a beautiful golden garland on his head and holding arrows, a sword, and a bow in his hands, looked up at the lord of wealth, Kubera.
न भीर्भीमस्य न ग्लानिर्विक्षतस्यापि राक्षसैः ।
आसीत्तस्यामवस्थायां कुबेरमपि पश्यतः ॥३९॥
39. na bhīrbhīmasya na glānirvikṣatasyāpi rākṣasaiḥ ,
āsīttasyāmavasthāyāṁ kuberamapi paśyataḥ.
39. na bhīḥ bhīmasya na glāniḥ vikṣatasya api rākṣasaiḥ
| āsīt tasyām avasthāyām kuberam api paśyataḥ
39. There was no fear for Bhima, nor any weariness, even though he was wounded by the demons, while he was observing Kubera in that state.
आददानं शितान्बाणान्योद्धुकाममवस्थितम् ।
दृष्ट्वा भीमं धर्मसुतमब्रवीन्नरवाहनः ॥४०॥
40. ādadānaṁ śitānbāṇānyoddhukāmamavasthitam ,
dṛṣṭvā bhīmaṁ dharmasutamabravīnnaravāhanaḥ.
40. ādadānam śitān bāṇān yoddhukāmam avasthitam |
dṛṣṭvā bhīmam dharmasutam abravīt naravāhanaḥ
40. Having seen Bhima, who was taking sharp arrows, desirous of fighting, and standing ready, Naravahana (Kubera) spoke to the son of Dharma (dharma), Yudhishthira.
विदुस्त्वां सर्वभूतानि पार्थ भूतहिते रतम् ।
निर्भयश्चापि शैलाग्रे वस त्वं सह बन्धुभिः ॥४१॥
41. vidustvāṁ sarvabhūtāni pārtha bhūtahite ratam ,
nirbhayaścāpi śailāgre vasa tvaṁ saha bandhubhiḥ.
41. viduḥ tvām sarvabhūtāni pārtha bhūtahite ratam |
nirbhayaḥ ca api śailāgre vasa tvam saha bandhubhiḥ
41. O son of Pritha (Pārtha), all beings know you to be devoted to the welfare of creatures. Dwell fearlessly on the mountain peak with your relatives.
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्यो भीमसेनस्य पाण्डव ।
कालेनैते हताः पूर्वं निमित्तमनुजस्तव ॥४२॥
42. na ca manyustvayā kāryo bhīmasenasya pāṇḍava ,
kālenaite hatāḥ pūrvaṁ nimittamanujastava.
42. na ca manyuḥ tvayā kāryaḥ bhīmasenasya pāṇḍava
kālena ete hatāḥ pūrvam nimittam anujaḥ tava
42. O son of Pāṇḍu, you should not be angry with Bhīmasena. These (Yakṣas) were already slain by time; your younger brother is merely the instrument.
व्रीडा चात्र न कर्तव्या साहसं यदिदं कृतम् ।
दृष्टश्चापि सुरैः पूर्वं विनाशो यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥४३॥
43. vrīḍā cātra na kartavyā sāhasaṁ yadidaṁ kṛtam ,
dṛṣṭaścāpi suraiḥ pūrvaṁ vināśo yakṣarakṣasām.
43. vrīḍā ca atra na kartavyā sāhasam yat idam kṛtam
dṛṣṭaḥ ca api suraiḥ pūrvam vināśaḥ yakṣarakṣasām
43. And there should be no shame (vrīḍā) here for this brave act that was performed. Moreover, the destruction of the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas was foreseen by the gods long ago.
न भीमसेने कोपो मे प्रीतोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ।
कर्मणानेन भीमस्य मम तुष्टिरभूत्पुरा ॥४४॥
44. na bhīmasene kopo me prīto'smi bharatarṣabha ,
karmaṇānena bhīmasya mama tuṣṭirabhūtpurā.
44. na bhīmasene kopaḥ me prītaḥ asmi bharatarṣabha
karmaṇā anena bhīmasya mama tuṣṭiḥ abhūt purā
44. I am not angry (kopa) with Bhīmasena, O best of the Bhāratas; rather, I am pleased. Through this action (karma) of Bhīma, my satisfaction was already achieved a long time ago.
एवमुक्त्वा तु राजानं भीमसेनमभाषत ।
नैतन्मनसि मे तात वर्तते कुरुसत्तम ।
यदिदं साहसं भीम कृष्णार्थे कृतवानसि ॥४५॥
45. evamuktvā tu rājānaṁ bhīmasenamabhāṣata ,
naitanmanasi me tāta vartate kurusattama ,
yadidaṁ sāhasaṁ bhīma kṛṣṇārthe kṛtavānasi.
45. evam uktvā tu rājānam bhīmasenam
abhāṣata na etat manasi me tāta
vartate kurusattama yat idam
sāhasam bhīma kṛṣṇārthe kṛtavān asi
45. Having spoken thus, he then addressed King Bhīmasena: 'O dear one, O best of the Kurus, this (anger) is not in my mind concerning this brave act which you, Bhīma, performed for Kṛṣṇa's sake.'
मामनादृत्य देवांश्च विनाशं यक्षरक्षसाम् ।
स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य तेनाहं प्रीतिमांस्त्वयि ।
शापादस्मि विनिर्मुक्तो घोरादद्य वृकोदर ॥४६॥
46. māmanādṛtya devāṁśca vināśaṁ yakṣarakṣasām ,
svabāhubalamāśritya tenāhaṁ prītimāṁstvayi ,
śāpādasmi vinirmukto ghorādadya vṛkodara.
46. mām anādṛtya devān ca vināśam
yakṣarakṣasām sva-bāhu-balam āśritya
tena aham prītimān tvayi śāpāt
asmi vinirmuktaḥ ghorāt adya vṛkodara
46. O Bhīma (Vṛkodara), since you disregarded me and the gods, relying solely on the strength of your own arms for the destruction of the yakṣas and rākṣasas, I am pleased with you. Consequently, I am now freed from a terrible curse.
अहं पूर्वमगस्त्येन क्रुद्धेन परमर्षिणा ।
शप्तोऽपराधे कस्मिंश्चित्तस्यैषा निष्कृतिः कृता ॥४७॥
47. ahaṁ pūrvamagastyena kruddhena paramarṣiṇā ,
śapto'parādhe kasmiṁścittasyaiṣā niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā.
47. aham pūrvam agastyena kruddhena paramarṣiṇā śaptaḥ
aparādhe kasmin cit tasya eṣā niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā
47. Previously, I was cursed by the enraged great sage (paramarṣi) Agastya for some offense. Your action has become the expiation (niṣkṛti) for that curse.
दृष्टो हि मम संक्लेशः पुरा पाण्डवनन्दन ।
न तवात्रापराधोऽस्ति कथंचिदपि शत्रुहन् ॥४८॥
48. dṛṣṭo hi mama saṁkleśaḥ purā pāṇḍavanandana ,
na tavātrāparādho'sti kathaṁcidapi śatruhan.
48. dṛṣṭaḥ hi mama saṃkleśaḥ purā pāṇḍunandana na
tava atra aparādhaḥ asti kathaṃcit api śatruhant
48. Indeed, my suffering (saṃkleśa) was witnessed previously, O son of Pāṇḍu. You bear no fault in this matter whatsoever, O destroyer of foes.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
कथं शप्तोऽसि भगवन्नगस्त्येन महात्मना ।
श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं देव तवैतच्छापकारणम् ॥४९॥
49. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kathaṁ śapto'si bhagavannagastyena mahātmanā ,
śrotumicchāmyahaṁ deva tavaitacchāpakāraṇam.
49. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca katham śaptaḥ asi bhagavan agastyena
mahā-ātmanā śrotum icchāmi aham deva tava etat śāpakāraṇam
49. Yudhiṣṭhira said, "O revered one (bhagavan), how were you cursed by the magnanimous (mahātmanā) Agastya? O divine one, I wish to hear the reason for this curse upon you."
इदं चाश्चर्यभूतं मे यत्क्रोधात्तस्य धीमतः ।
तदैव त्वं न निर्दग्धः सबलः सपदानुगः ॥५०॥
50. idaṁ cāścaryabhūtaṁ me yatkrodhāttasya dhīmataḥ ,
tadaiva tvaṁ na nirdagdhaḥ sabalaḥ sapadānugaḥ.
50. idam ca āścaryabhūtam me yat krodhāt tasya dhīmataḥ
tadā eva tvam na nirdagdhaḥ sabalaḥ sapadānugaḥ
50. And this is astonishing to me, that at that very moment, you, along with your army and followers, were not burnt to ashes by the anger of that wise one.
वैश्रवण उवाच ।
देवतानामभून्मन्त्रः कुशवत्यां नरेश्वर ।
वृतस्तत्राहमगमं महापद्मशतैस्त्रिभिः ।
यक्षाणां घोररूपाणां विविधायुधधारिणाम् ॥५१॥
51. vaiśravaṇa uvāca ,
devatānāmabhūnmantraḥ kuśavatyāṁ nareśvara ,
vṛtastatrāhamagamaṁ mahāpadmaśataistribhiḥ ,
yakṣāṇāṁ ghorarūpāṇāṁ vividhāyudhadhāriṇām.
51. vaiśravaṇa uvāca devatānām abhūt mantraḥ
kuśavatyām nareśvara vṛtaḥ tatra aham
agamam mahāpadmaśataiḥ tribhiḥ yakṣāṇām
ghorarūpāṇām vividhāyudhadhāriṇām
51. Vaiśravaṇa said: 'O king of men, the gods held a secret counsel in Kuśavatī. Invited to it, I went there with three hundred `mahāpadmas` of frightful Yakṣas who bore various weapons.'
अध्वन्यहमथापश्यमगस्त्यमृषिसत्तमम् ।
उग्रं तपस्तपस्यन्तं यमुनातीरमाश्रितम् ।
नानापक्षिगणाकीर्णं पुष्पितद्रुमशोभितम् ॥५२॥
52. adhvanyahamathāpaśyamagastyamṛṣisattamam ,
ugraṁ tapastapasyantaṁ yamunātīramāśritam ,
nānāpakṣigaṇākīrṇaṁ puṣpitadrumaśobhitam.
52. adhvani aham atha apaśyam agastyam
ṛṣisattamam ugram tapaḥ
tapasyantam yamunātīram āśritam
nānāpakṣigaṇākīrṇam puṣpitadrumaśobhitam
52. Then, on my way, I saw Agastya, the foremost among sages, practicing severe asceticism (tapas) while settled on the bank of the Yamunā. That place was teeming with various flocks of birds and graced by flowering trees.
तमूर्ध्वबाहुं दृष्ट्वा तु सूर्यस्याभिमुखं स्थितम् ।
तेजोराशिं दीप्यमानं हुताशनमिवैधितम् ॥५३॥
53. tamūrdhvabāhuṁ dṛṣṭvā tu sūryasyābhimukhaṁ sthitam ,
tejorāśiṁ dīpyamānaṁ hutāśanamivaidhitam.
53. tam ūrdhvabāhum dṛṣṭvā tu sūryasya abhimukham
sthitam tejorāśim dīpyamānam hutāśanam iva edhitam
53. Indeed, having seen him, with his arms raised, standing facing the sun, a blazing mass of splendor like a well-fed sacrificial fire.
राक्षसाधिपतिः श्रीमान्मणिमान्नाम मे सखा ।
मौर्ख्यादज्ञानभावाच्च दर्पान्मोहाच्च भारत ।
न्यष्ठीवदाकाशगतो महर्षेस्तस्य मूर्धनि ॥५४॥
54. rākṣasādhipatiḥ śrīmānmaṇimānnāma me sakhā ,
maurkhyādajñānabhāvācca darpānmohācca bhārata ,
nyaṣṭhīvadākāśagato maharṣestasya mūrdhani.
54. rākṣasādhipatiḥ śrīmān maṇimān nāma
me sakhā | maurklyāt ajñānabhāvāt ca
darpāt mohāt ca bhārata | nyaṣṭhīvat
ākāśagataḥ maharṣeḥ tasya mūrdhani
54. O Bhārata, my glorious friend, the king of rākṣasas (demons) named Maṇimān, due to his foolishness, ignorance, arrogance, and delusion, spat upon the head of that great sage while he was flying in the sky.
स कोपान्मामुवाचेदं दिशः सर्वा दहन्निव ।
मामवज्ञाय दुष्टात्मा यस्मादेष सखा तव ॥५५॥
55. sa kopānmāmuvācedaṁ diśaḥ sarvā dahanniva ,
māmavajñāya duṣṭātmā yasmādeṣa sakhā tava.
55. sa kopāt mām uvāca idam diśaḥ sarvāḥ dahan iva
| mām avajñāya duṣṭātmā yasmāt eṣaḥ sakhā tava
55. With anger, as if burning all directions, he (the sage) said this to me: "Because this wicked-souled friend of yours has insulted me..."
धर्षणां कृतवानेतां पश्यतस्ते धनेश्वर ।
तस्मात्सहैभिः सैन्यैस्ते वधं प्राप्स्यति मानुषात् ॥५६॥
56. dharṣaṇāṁ kṛtavānetāṁ paśyataste dhaneśvara ,
tasmātsahaibhiḥ sainyaiste vadhaṁ prāpsyati mānuṣāt.
56. dharṣaṇām kṛtavān etām paśyataḥ te dhaneśvara | tasmāt
saha ebhiḥ sainyaiḥ te vadham prāpsyati mānuṣāt
56. O lord of wealth (dhaneśvara), because he committed this offense while you were watching, therefore he, along with your armies, will meet his death at the hands of a human.
त्वं चाप्येभिर्हतैः सैन्यैः क्लेशं प्राप्स्यसि दुर्मते ।
तमेव मानुषं दृष्ट्वा किल्बिषाद्विप्रमोक्ष्यसे ॥५७॥
57. tvaṁ cāpyebhirhataiḥ sainyaiḥ kleśaṁ prāpsyasi durmate ,
tameva mānuṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā kilbiṣādvipramokṣyase.
57. tvam ca api ebhiḥ hataiḥ sainyaiḥ kleśam prāpsyasi
durmate | tam eva mānuṣam dṛṣṭvā kilbiṣāt vipramokṣyase
57. And you too, O evil-minded one, will experience great suffering when these armies of yours are destroyed. However, upon seeing that very human, you will be released (mokṣa) from your sin.
सैन्यानां तु तवैतेषां पुत्रपौत्रबलान्वितम् ।
न शापं प्राप्स्यते घोरं गच्छ तेऽऽज्ञां करिष्यति ॥५८॥
58. sainyānāṁ tu tavaiteṣāṁ putrapautrabalānvitam ,
na śāpaṁ prāpsyate ghoraṁ gaccha te''jñāṁ kariṣyati.
58. sainyānām tu tava eteṣām putrapautrabalānvitam na
śāpam prāpsyate ghoram gaccha te ājñām kariṣyati
58. Indeed, these armies of yours, along with their sons, grandsons, and strength, will not incur a terrible curse. Go! He will carry out your command.
एष शापो मया प्राप्तः प्राक्तस्मादृषिसत्तमात् ।
स भीमेन महाराज भ्रात्रा तव विमोक्षितः ॥५९॥
59. eṣa śāpo mayā prāptaḥ prāktasmādṛṣisattamāt ,
sa bhīmena mahārāja bhrātrā tava vimokṣitaḥ.
59. eṣaḥ śāpaḥ mayā prāptaḥ prāk tasmāt ṛṣisattamāt
saḥ bhīmena mahārāja bhrātrā tava vimokṣitaḥ
59. This curse was previously incurred by me from that best of sages. O great king, he (i.e., I) was freed from it by your brother Bhima.
