1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,

Yudhishthira said: "O Grandfather, O greatly wise one, O expert in all scriptures, O best among the intelligent, I have heard this great narrative."
भूयस्तु श्रोतुमिच्छामि धर्मार्थसहितं नृप ।
कथ्यमानं त्वया किंचित्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥२॥

2. bhūyastu śrotumicchāmi dharmārthasahitaṁ nṛpa ,

bhūyaḥ tu śrotum icchāmi dharmaarthasahitam nṛpa

"But furthermore, O King, I wish to hear something containing the principles of natural law (dharma) and prosperity (artha). You should explain that to me truthfully."
केन मृत्युर्गृहस्थेन धर्ममाश्रित्य निर्जितः ।
इत्येतत्सर्वमाचक्ष्व तत्त्वेन मम पार्थिव ॥३॥

"By what householder was death conquered by resorting to natural law (dharma)? O Ruler, please explain all of this to me truthfully."
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
यथा मृत्युर्गृहस्थेन धर्ममाश्रित्य निर्जितः ॥४॥

Bhishma said: "Regarding this, they also relate this ancient legend (itihāsa) of how death was conquered by a householder who resorted to natural law (dharma)."
मनोः प्रजापते राजन्निक्ष्वाकुरभवत्सुतः ।
तस्य पुत्रशतं जज्ञे नृपतेः सूर्यवर्चसः ॥५॥

O king, Ikṣvāku was the son of Manu, the progenitor. From that king, whose brilliance was like the sun, a hundred sons were born.
दशमस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु दशाश्वो नाम भारत ।
माहिष्मत्यामभूद्राजा धर्मात्मा सत्यविक्रमः ॥६॥

O Bhārata, his tenth son was named Daśāśva. He became the king in Māhiṣmatī, a man of righteous (dharma) character and true valor.
दशाश्वस्य सुतस्त्वासीद्राजा परमधार्मिकः ।
सत्ये तपसि दाने च यस्य नित्यं रतं मनः ॥७॥

Daśāśva's son was a king, exceedingly righteous. His mind was constantly devoted to truth, asceticism (tapas), and charity (dāna).
मदिराश्व इति ख्यातः पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपतिः ।
धनुर्वेदे च वेदे च निरतो योऽभवत्सदा ॥८॥

He was renowned on earth as Madirāśva, the lord of the earth, who was always engrossed in the science of archery and the Vedas.

The son of Madirāśva was indeed a king named Dyutimān, who was greatly fortunate, highly splendid, exceptionally courageous, and immensely powerful.

Dyutimān’s son was indeed a king named Suvīra, who possessed a righteous (dharma) nature, was wealthy, and was like another king of the gods, Indra.
सुवीरस्य तु पुत्रोऽभूत्सर्वसंग्रामदुर्जयः ।
दुर्जयेत्यभिविख्यातः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥११॥

11. suvīrasya tu putro'bhūtsarvasaṁgrāmadurjayaḥ ,

Suvīra’s son was born, unconquerable in all battles, renowned as Durjaya, and an expert in all scriptures.

The son of Durjaya, who had a body like Indra, was named Duryodhana, possessing splendor like fire; he was a great king, the best among kings.
तस्येन्द्रसमवीर्यस्य संग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिनः ।
विषयश्च प्रभावश्च तुल्यमेवाभ्यवर्तत ॥१३॥

13. tasyendrasamavīryasya saṁgrāmeṣvanivartinaḥ ,
viṣayaśca prabhāvaśca tulyamevābhyavartata.

Of him, whose valor was like Indra's and who never retreated in battles, his territory and influence equally expanded.
रत्नैर्धनैश्च पशुभिः सस्यैश्चापि पृथग्विधैः ।
नगरं विषयश्चास्य प्रतिपूर्णं तदाभवत् ॥१४॥

14. ratnairdhanaiśca paśubhiḥ sasyaiścāpi pṛthagvidhaiḥ ,
nagaraṁ viṣayaścāsya pratipūrṇaṁ tadābhavat.

14.
His city and realm then became completely prosperous with jewels, wealth, cattle, and also various kinds of crops.
न तस्य विषये चाभूत्कृपणो नापि दुर्गतः ।
व्याधितो वा कृशो वापि तस्मिन्नाभून्नरः क्वचित् ॥१५॥

15. na tasya viṣaye cābhūtkṛpaṇo nāpi durgataḥ ,
vyādhito vā kṛśo vāpi tasminnābhūnnaraḥ kvacit.

na tasya viṣaye ca abhūt kṛpaṇaḥ na api durgataḥ

15.
In his realm, there was no one who was wretched or destitute. Nor was there any person, anywhere, who was diseased or emaciated.
सुदक्षिणो मधुरवागनसूयुर्जितेन्द्रियः ।
धर्मात्मा चानृशंसश्च विक्रान्तोऽथाविकत्थनः ॥१६॥

16. sudakṣiṇo madhuravāganasūyurjitendriyaḥ ,
dharmātmā cānṛśaṁsaśca vikrānto'thāvikatthanaḥ.

sudakṣiṇaḥ madhuravāk anasūyuḥ jitendriyaḥ dharmātmā

He was benevolent, sweet-spoken, not envious, and had controlled his senses. He was also of a righteous (dharma) nature (ātman), not cruel, valorous, and not boastful.
यज्वा वदान्यो मेधावी ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यसंगरः ।
न चावमन्ता दाता च वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ॥१७॥

17. yajvā vadānyo medhāvī brahmaṇyaḥ satyasaṁgaraḥ ,
na cāvamantā dātā ca vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ.

He was a performer of Vedic rituals (yajña), generous, intelligent, devoted to sacred knowledge, and truthful in his vows. He was not contemptuous of others, but rather a charitable giver and one who had mastered the Vedas and Vedangas.
तं नर्मदा देवनदी पुण्या शीतजला शिवा ।
चकमे पुरुषश्रेष्ठं स्वेन भावेन भारत ॥१८॥

18. taṁ narmadā devanadī puṇyā śītajalā śivā ,
cakame puruṣaśreṣṭhaṁ svena bhāvena bhārata.

O Bhārata, the divine river Narmadā, sacred, with cool waters, and auspicious, desired that excellent man with her own deep feeling.
तस्य जज्ञे तदा नद्यां कन्या राजीवलोचना ।
नाम्ना सुदर्शना राजन्रूपेण च सुदर्शना ॥१९॥

19. tasya jajñe tadā nadyāṁ kanyā rājīvalocanā ,
nāmnā sudarśanā rājanrūpeṇa ca sudarśanā.

O King, at that time, a lotus-eyed daughter was born to him in the river. She was named Sudarśanā, and indeed, she was also beautiful to behold in her form.
तादृग्रूपा न नारीषु भूतपूर्वा युधिष्ठिर ।
दुर्योधनसुता यादृगभवद्वरवर्णिनी ॥२०॥

20. tādṛgrūpā na nārīṣu bhūtapūrvā yudhiṣṭhira ,
duryodhanasutā yādṛgabhavadvaravarṇinī.

O Yudhiṣṭhira, among women, there was never before one of such form as Duryodhana's daughter, who was indeed a woman of excellent complexion.
तामग्निश्चकमे साक्षाद्राजकन्यां सुदर्शनाम् ।
भूत्वा च ब्राह्मणः साक्षाद्वरयामास तं नृपम् ॥२१॥

21. tāmagniścakame sākṣādrājakanyāṁ sudarśanām ,
bhūtvā ca brāhmaṇaḥ sākṣādvarayāmāsa taṁ nṛpam.

tām agniḥ cakame sākṣāt rājakanyām sudarśanām
bhūtvā ca brāhmaṇaḥ sākṣāt varayāmāsa tam nṛpam

agniḥ sākṣāt tām sudarśanām rājakanyām cakame
ca brāhmaṇaḥ sākṣāt bhūtvā tam nṛpam varayāmāsa
ca brāhmaṇaḥ sākṣāt bhūtvā tam nṛpam varayāmāsa

Agni himself desired that beautiful princess, Sudarśanā. And, having personally assumed the form of a Brahmin, he sought her hand from that king.
दरिद्रश्चासवर्णश्च ममायमिति पार्थिवः ।
न दित्सति सुतां तस्मै तां विप्राय सुदर्शनाम् ॥२२॥

22. daridraścāsavarṇaśca mamāyamiti pārthivaḥ ,
na ditsati sutāṁ tasmai tāṁ viprāya sudarśanām.

Thinking 'This person is poor and of a different social status,' the king did not wish to give that daughter, Sudarśanā, to that Brahmin.

Then, during his extensive Vedic ritual (yajña), Agni (havyavāhana), the carrier of oblations, disappeared. At that time, King Duryodhana spoke to the priests.

येन नाशं जगामाग्निः कृतं कुपुरुषेष्विव ॥२४॥

O best among Brahmins, what misdeed (karma) could be mine, or yours, by which Agni has disappeared, just as a good deed (karma) is wasted on wicked individuals?
न ह्यल्पं दुष्कृतं नोऽस्ति येनाग्निर्नाशमागतः ।
भवतां वाथ वा मह्यं तत्त्वेनैतद्विमृश्यताम् ॥२५॥

Indeed, it is not a minor misdeed of ours by which the fire has met its destruction. Therefore, let this matter be thoroughly considered, either by you or by me.

O best of the Bharatas, having heard these words of the king, those Brahmins, self-controlled and with disciplined speech, indeed went to Agni for refuge.

Then, the divine carrier of offerings (havyavāhana) revealed himself to them, having assumed his own radiant form which shone with the splendor of the autumn sun.

Then the great-souled Agni (dahana) said to those foremost Brahmins: 'I desire Duryodhana's daughter for my own sake (ātman).'

Early the next morning, having risen, all the astonished Brahmins reported to the king what had been said by Citrabhānu.

Then, the wise king, having heard that statement from the Brahmins (brahmavādinām) and having attained great joy, said, "So be it."

तमाह भगवानग्निरेवमस्त्विति पार्थिवम् ॥३१॥

The king requested a favor from the divine Vibhāvasu (Agni), saying, "O Citrabhānu, may your presence always be here." The divine Agni then said to that king, "Let it be so."

Then, the presence of Vibhāvasu (Agni) is seen in Mahiṣmatī even today. Indeed, it was seen there by Sahadeva at that time, while he was conquering the quarters.

Thereafter, King Duryodhana, having adorned that maiden, who was wearing new clothes, gave her to the great-souled Fire god (Pāvaka).

And Agni (the Fire god) accepted that beautiful princess according to the ritual prescribed by the Vedas, just as (he accepts) the stream of Vasu (wealth) in a Vedic ritual (yajña).

Through her beauty, character, lineage, physique, and grace, Agni became pleased and placed a germ in her.

From her, a son named Āgneya Sudarśana was born. While still a child, he mastered all the eternal truth (brahman).

Then, there was a king named Oghavān, who was the grandfather of Nṛga. He also had a daughter named Oghavatī and a son named Ogharatha.

Oghavān himself gave that daughter, Oghavatī, who was divine in form, to the wise Sudarśana as a wife.

O King, that Sudarśana, devoted to the householder's stage (āśrama) of life, resided in Kurukṣetra accompanied by her, Oghavatī.

O Lord (prabhu), O chief of men (viśām pati), that wise one, possessing brilliant splendor, made this vow: 'As a householder, I shall indeed conquer death.'

Then, O King, the son of Pāvaka spoke to Oghavatī: "You should never, in any circumstance, do anything contrary to a guest's wishes."

And by whatever means a guest may always be pleased by you, even by offering your own self (ātman), you should not give it a second thought.

O lady with beautiful thighs, O beautiful one, if my words are an authority for you, then you should always hold this message in your heart, undistracted.

Oghavati, with folded hands placed on her head, said to him, 'There is nothing that I would not do according to your words, under any circumstances.'

O King, when Sudarśana was attempting to conquer in his own home, then (mṛtyu) Death always followed him from behind, constantly searching for a weak point.

But when Sudarśana, that son of Agni, had gone to fetch firewood, a glorious Brahmin (brāhmaṇa) guest then said to Oghavati.
आतिथ्यं दत्तमिच्छामि त्वयाद्य वरवर्णिनि ।
प्रमाणं यदि धर्मस्ते गृहस्थाश्रमसंमतः ॥४९॥

O beautiful lady, I desire to be given hospitality by you today. This is if the natural law (dharma) approved for the householder's stage of life (āśrama) is authoritative for you.

O lord of the people, thus addressed by that brahmin, the renowned princess received him with the ritual prescribed in the Vedas.

Having offered a seat and water for his feet to that twice-born (dvija), Oghavatī said to the brahmin: 'What is your intention? What may I give to you?'

त्वया ममार्थः कल्याणि निर्विशङ्के तदाचर ॥५२॥

Then the brahmin said to that beautiful princess: 'O auspicious and fearless one, my objective requires your involvement. Therefore, act upon that.'

प्रदानेनात्मनो राज्ञि कर्तुमर्हसि मे प्रियम् ॥५३॥

If the natural law (dharma) approved for the householder stage (āśrama) is an authoritative guide for you, then you should grant my wish by giving me (myself) to the prince.
तथा संछन्द्यमानोऽन्यैरीप्सितैर्नृपकन्यया ।
नान्यमात्मप्रदानात्स तस्या वव्रे वरं द्विजः ॥५४॥

Thus, though he was being earnestly entreated by others with various desirable options, and even by the princess (Savitri) herself, that noble one (dvija) chose no other husband for her than her own self-offering.

But that princess, remembering the word of her beloved (bhartṛ) from the beginning, shyly said "so be it" to that chief among the twice-born (dvijarṣabha).

tataḥ saḥ viprarṣiḥ ca sā eva rahaḥ upaviveśa ha (tau)

56.
Then, that Brahmin sage and she herself sat down in a secluded spot, having thoroughly remembered the word of her beloved (bhartṛ), who was desirous of the householder stage of life (āśrama).
अथेध्मान्समुपादाय स पावकिरुपागमत् ।
मृत्युना रौद्रभावेन नित्यं बन्धुरिवान्वितः ॥५७॥

Then, having gathered fuel sticks, he, the son of Pavaka, approached. He was constantly accompanied by Death, whose nature was dreadful, as if Death were a close kinsman.

तामाजुहावौघवतीं क्वासि यातेति चासकृत् ॥५८॥

Then, having arrived at the hermitage, that son of Pavaka repeatedly called out to Oghavati, asking, "Where have you gone?"
तस्मै प्रतिवचः सा तु भर्त्रे न प्रददौ तदा ।
कराभ्यां तेन विप्रेण स्पृष्टा भर्तृव्रता सती ॥५९॥

But she, being a woman devoted to her husband (bhartṛvratā), did not give him a reply then, having been touched by the hands of that brahmin.

तूष्णींभूताभवत्साध्वी न चोवाचाथ किंचन ॥६०॥

Thinking, "I am impure (ucchiṣṭā)," and feeling ashamed, especially regarding her husband, that virtuous woman became silent and said nothing at all.
अथ तां पुनरेवेदं प्रोवाच स सुदर्शनः ।
क्व सा साध्वी क्व सा याता गरीयः किमतो मम ॥६१॥

61. atha tāṁ punarevedaṁ provāca sa sudarśanaḥ ,

Then Sudarśana again spoke this, saying, "Where is that virtuous woman? Where has she gone? What greater sorrow could there be for me than this?"
पतिव्रता सत्यशीला नित्यं चैवार्जवे रता ।
कथं न प्रत्युदेत्यद्य स्मयमाना यथा पुरा ॥६२॥

But the (brāhmaṇa) dwelling in the hut replied to Sudarśana: "Know me as an arrived guest, and know me as the (brāhmaṇa) (Agni) in the sacred fire."

तैस्तैरतिथिसत्कारैरार्जवेऽस्या दृढं मनः ॥६४॥

O best among men, I was being served by this wife of yours with various acts of guest hospitality. Her mind is indeed firm in honesty.

This beautiful-faced woman worships me according to this procedure. Whatever is appropriate for this situation today, you should state that.
कूटमुद्गरहस्तस्तु मृत्युस्तं वै समन्वयात् ।
हीनप्रतिज्ञमत्रैनं वधिष्यामीति चिन्तयन् ॥६६॥

But Death, holding a mace in his hand, approached him, thinking, 'I will kill him here because he has broken his vow'.

tu sudarśanaḥ manasā karmaṇā cakṣuṣā girā ca

Sudarśana, however, with his mind, actions, gaze, and words, having abandoned both envy and anger, spoke this with a smile.
सुरतं तेऽस्तु विप्राग्र्य प्रीतिर्हि परमा मम ।
गृहस्थस्य हि धर्मोऽग्र्यः संप्राप्तातिथिपूजनम् ॥६८॥

May you be delighted, O foremost of Brahmins, for indeed, my joy is supreme. For a householder, the foremost duty (dharma) is the veneration of a guest who has arrived.
अतिथिः पूजितो यस्य गृहस्थस्य तु गच्छति ।
नान्यस्तस्मात्परो धर्म इति प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ॥६९॥

When a guest, having been honored, departs from a householder, the wise declare that there is no greater natural law (dharma) than that.
प्राणा हि मम दाराश्च यच्चान्यद्विद्यते वसु ।
अतिथिभ्यो मया देयमिति मे व्रतमाहितम् ॥७०॥

Indeed, my life, my wives, and whatever other wealth I possess are to be given by me to guests; this is the vow I have undertaken.

This statement has been declared by me to you without any doubt. O brahmin, by that truth I myself affirm my own self (ātman).
पृथिवी वायुराकाशमापो ज्योतिश्च पञ्चमम् ।

Earth, air, ether, water, and fifthly, light; intellect, the self (ātman), mind, time, and directions - these are indeed the ten qualities.

सुकृतं दुष्कृतं चापि कर्म धर्मभृतां वर ॥७३॥

O best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), these [entities] residing in the body indeed constantly observe the good and bad actions (karma) of embodied beings.
यथैषा नानृता वाणी मयाद्य समुदाहृता ।
तेन सत्येन मां देवाः पालयन्तु दहन्तु वा ॥७४॥

74. yathaiṣā nānṛtā vāṇī mayādya samudāhṛtā ,

Just as this speech (vāṇī) uttered by me today is not false, by that very truth (satyam), may the gods either protect me or burn me.

Then, O Bhārata, a sound arose in all directions, repeatedly proclaiming, 'It is truth (satyam) indeed!' and 'This is not false in any way!'
उटजात्तु ततस्तस्मान्निश्चक्राम स वै द्विजः ।
वपुषा खं च भूमिं च व्याप्य वायुरिवोद्यतः ॥७६॥

76.
Then, indeed, that Brahmin (dvija) emerged from that hut, pervading both the sky and the earth with his body, like a roused wind.
स्वरेण विप्रः शैक्षेण त्रीँल्लोकाननुनादयन् ।
उवाच चैनं धर्मज्ञं पूर्वमामन्त्र्य नामतः ॥७७॥

The learned brahmin, making the three worlds resound with his voice, first addressed that knower of natural law (dharma) by name, and then spoke to him.
धर्मोऽहमस्मि भद्रं ते जिज्ञासार्थं तवानघ ।
प्राप्तः सत्यं च ते ज्ञात्वा प्रीतिर्मे परमा त्वयि ॥७८॥

78. dharmo'hamasmi bhadraṁ te jijñāsārthaṁ tavānagha ,

I am natural law (dharma). May prosperity be with you, O sinless one! I have come for the purpose of your inquiry. Having known your truthfulness, my supreme satisfaction is with you.
विजितश्च त्वया मृत्युर्योऽयं त्वामनुगच्छति ।
रन्ध्रान्वेषी तव सदा त्वया धृत्या वशीकृतः ॥७९॥

79. vijitaśca tvayā mṛtyuryo'yaṁ tvāmanugacchati ,
randhrānveṣī tava sadā tvayā dhṛtyā vaśīkṛtaḥ.

vijitaḥ ca tvayā mṛtyuḥ yaḥ ayam tvām anugacchati

And Death, who constantly follows you, searching for your vulnerabilities, has been conquered by you; he has been brought under control by your steadfastness.
न चास्ति शक्तिस्त्रैलोक्ये कस्यचित्पुरुषोत्तम ।
पतिव्रतामिमां साध्वीं तवोद्वीक्षितुमप्युत ॥८०॥

80. na cāsti śaktistrailokye kasyacitpuruṣottama ,
pativratāmimāṁ sādhvīṁ tavodvīkṣitumapyuta.

na ca asti śaktiḥ trailokye kasyacit puruṣottama

And there is no power (śakti) in the three worlds for anyone, O supreme person (puruṣottama), even to gaze upon this virtuous and devoted wife of yours.
रक्षिता त्वद्गुणैरेषा पतिव्रतगुणैस्तथा ।
अधृष्या यदियं ब्रूयात्तथा तन्नान्यथा भवेत् ॥८१॥

81. rakṣitā tvadguṇaireṣā pativrataguṇaistathā ,

This one, protected by your qualities and by the virtues of her wifely devotion, is unassailable. Whatever she may declare, that will indeed come to pass and not otherwise.
एषा हि तपसा स्वेन संयुक्ता ब्रह्मवादिनी ।
पावनार्थं च लोकस्य सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा भविष्यति ॥८२॥

82. eṣā hi tapasā svena saṁyuktā brahmavādinī ,
pāvanārthaṁ ca lokasya saricchreṣṭhā bhaviṣyati.

Indeed, this one is endowed with her own asceticism (tapas) and is eloquent in Vedic knowledge (brahmavādinī). And for the purification of the world, she will become the foremost of rivers.
अर्धेनौघवती नाम त्वामर्धेनानुयास्यति ।
शरीरेण महाभागा योगो ह्यस्या वशे स्थितः ॥८३॥

83. ardhenaughavatī nāma tvāmardhenānuyāsyati ,
śarīreṇa mahābhāgā yogo hyasyā vaśe sthitaḥ.

ardhena oghavatī nāma tvām ardhena anuyāsyati
śarīreṇa mahābhāgā yogaḥ hi asyāḥ vaśe sthitaḥ

mahābhāgā ardhena nāma oghavatī ardhena śarīreṇa
tvām anuyāsyati hi asyāḥ yogaḥ vaśe sthitaḥ
tvām anuyāsyati hi asyāḥ yogaḥ vaśe sthitaḥ
83.
By one half (of her being), she, named Oghavatī, will follow you. O greatly fortunate one, her spiritual discipline (yoga) is indeed under her control.
अनया सह लोकांश्च गन्तासि तपसार्जितान् ।
यत्र नावृत्तिमभ्येति शाश्वतांस्तान्सनातनान् ॥८४॥

84. anayā saha lokāṁśca gantāsi tapasārjitān ,

Together with her, you will go to the worlds attained through your asceticism (tapas) – those eternal and everlasting realms from which there is no return.
अनेन चैव देहेन लोकांस्त्वमभिपत्स्यसे ।
निर्जितश्च त्वया मृत्युरैश्वर्यं च तवोत्तमम् ॥८५॥

85. anena caiva dehena lokāṁstvamabhipatsyase ,
nirjitaśca tvayā mṛtyuraiśvaryaṁ ca tavottamam.

Indeed, with this very body, you will attain various realms. Death has been overcome by you, and your dominion is supreme.
पञ्च भूतान्यतिक्रान्तः स्ववीर्याच्च मनोभवः ।
गृहस्थधर्मेणानेन कामक्रोधौ च ते जितौ ॥८६॥

86.
You have transcended the five fundamental elements, and by your own strength, even the mind-born (Kāma). Through this natural law (dharma) of a householder, both desire and anger have been conquered by you.
स्नेहो रागश्च तन्द्री च मोहो द्रोहश्च केवलः ।
तव शुश्रूषया राजन्राजपुत्र्या विनिर्जिताः ॥८७॥

Affection, attachment, sloth, delusion, and purely malice - all these, O King, have been completely overcome by your service and by the princess.

Bhishma said: Taking hold of the excellent chariot, yoked with a thousand white horses, the venerable Determination (vyavasāya) went to him.
मृत्युरात्मा च लोकाश्च जिता भूतानि पञ्च च ।
बुद्धिः कालो मनो व्योम कामक्रोधौ तथैव च ॥८९॥

Death, the individual self (ātman), and the worlds have been conquered. The five elements are also mastered, as are the intellect, time, mind, space, and likewise, desire and anger (kāmakrodhau).

ऋतेऽतिथिं नरव्याघ्र मनसैतद्विचारय ॥९०॥

Therefore, for a householder (āśrama), there is certainly no other deity except for a guest. O tiger among men, reflect on this with your mind.

When a guest is honored, and he contemplates auspiciousness with his mind, the wise (manīṣiṇaḥ) declare that this (good outcome) is not equaled even by a hundred Vedic rituals (yajña).

स दत्त्वा सुकृतं तस्य क्षपयेत ह्यनर्चितः ॥९२॥

But whoever, encountering a guest (atithi) who is a worthy person (pātra) and virtuous (śīlāḍhya), fails to honor him, that person, himself becoming unhonored (anarcitaḥ), indeed destroys his own merit (sukṛtaṃ) by giving it up.

O son, I have narrated to you this excellent story, detailing how death was overcome by a householder in ancient times.
