वायुरुवाच ।
शृणु मूढ गुणान्कांश्चिद्ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम् ।
ये त्वया कीर्तिता राजंस्तेभ्योऽथ ब्राह्मणो वरः ॥१॥
1. vāyuruvāca ,
śṛṇu mūḍha guṇānkāṁścidbrāhmaṇānāṁ mahātmanām ,
ye tvayā kīrtitā rājaṁstebhyo'tha brāhmaṇo varaḥ.

1. Vāyu said: O foolish one, listen to some qualities of the great-souled brahmin (brāhmaṇa)s. O king, a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) is superior even to those whom you have extolled.
त्यक्त्वा महीत्वं भूमिस्तु स्पर्धयाङ्गनृपस्य ह ।
नाशं जगाम तां विप्रो व्यष्टम्भयत कश्यपः ॥२॥
2. tyaktvā mahītvaṁ bhūmistu spardhayāṅganṛpasya ha ,
nāśaṁ jagāma tāṁ vipro vyaṣṭambhayata kaśyapaḥ.
2. tyaktvā mahītvam bhūmiḥ tu spardhayā aṅganṛpasya
ha nāśam jagāma tām vipraḥ vyastambhayat kaśyapaḥ
2. bhūmiḥ tu aṅganṛpasya spardhayā mahītvam tyaktvā
ha nāśam jagāma vipraḥ kaśyapaḥ tām vyastambhayat
2. But the Earth (bhūmi), having abandoned her essential nature due to rivalry with King Aṅga, indeed went towards destruction. The brahmin (brāhmaṇa) Kaśyapa then stabilized her.
अक्षया ब्राह्मणा राजन्दिवि चेह च नित्यदा ।
अपिबत्तेजसा ह्यापः स्वयमेवाङ्गिराः पुरा ॥३॥
3. akṣayā brāhmaṇā rājandivi ceha ca nityadā ,
apibattejasā hyāpaḥ svayamevāṅgirāḥ purā.
3. akṣayāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ rājan divi ca iha ca nityadā
apibat tejasā hi āpaḥ svayam eva aṅgirāḥ purā
3. rājan brāhmaṇāḥ akṣayāḥ divi ca iha ca nityadā
hi aṅgirāḥ purā svayam eva tejasā āpaḥ apibat
3. O king, brahmin (brāhmaṇa)s are imperishable, both in heaven and here on earth, eternally. Indeed, Aṅgiras (or the Aṅgirasas) of old, by their own spiritual power, drank the waters.
स ताः पिबन्क्षीरमिव नातृप्यत महातपाः ।
अपूरयन्महौघेन महीं सर्वां च पार्थिव ॥४॥
4. sa tāḥ pibankṣīramiva nātṛpyata mahātapāḥ ,
apūrayanmahaughena mahīṁ sarvāṁ ca pārthiva.
4. saḥ tāḥ piban kṣīram iva na atṛpyata mahātapaḥ
apūrayan mahaughena mahīm sarvām ca pārthiva
4. O King, that great ascetic, while drinking those (waters) as if they were milk, was not satisfied. Filling the entire earth with a great flood, he remained unsatiated.
तस्मिन्नहं च क्रुद्धे वै जगत्त्यक्त्वा ततो गतः ।
व्यतिष्ठमग्निहोत्रे च चिरमङ्गिरसो भयात् ॥५॥
5. tasminnahaṁ ca kruddhe vai jagattyaktvā tato gataḥ ,
vyatiṣṭhamagnihotre ca ciramaṅgiraso bhayāt.
5. tasmin aham ca kruddhe vai jagat tyaktvā tataḥ
gataḥ vyatiṣṭham agnihotre ca ciram aṅgirasaḥ bhayāt
5. And when he was indeed enraged, I abandoned the world and went from there. From fear of Angiras, I remained in the (agnihotra) Vedic fire ritual for a long time.
अभिशप्तश्च भगवान्गौतमेन पुरंदरः ।
अहल्यां कामयानो वै धर्मार्थं च न हिंसितः ॥६॥
6. abhiśaptaśca bhagavāngautamena puraṁdaraḥ ,
ahalyāṁ kāmayāno vai dharmārthaṁ ca na hiṁsitaḥ.
6. abhīśaptaḥ ca bhagavān gautamena purandaraḥ
ahalyām kāmayānaḥ vai dharma-artham ca na hiṃsitaḥ
6. And the revered Purandara (Indra), while indeed desiring Ahalya, was cursed by Gautama, but was not slain for the sake of (dharma).
तथा समुद्रो नृपते पूर्णो मृष्टेन वारिणा ।
ब्राह्मणैरभिशप्तः सँल्लवणोदः कृतो विभो ॥७॥
7. tathā samudro nṛpate pūrṇo mṛṣṭena vāriṇā ,
brāhmaṇairabhiśaptaḥ saँllavaṇodaḥ kṛto vibho.
7. tathā samudraḥ nṛpate pūrṇaḥ mṛṣṭena vāriṇā
brāhmaṇaiḥ abhīśaptaḥ san lavaṇa-udaḥ kṛtaḥ vibho
7. Similarly, O King, O Lord, the ocean, which was full of sweet water, was made salty by the curse of the brahmins.
सुवर्णवर्णो निर्धूमः संहतोर्ध्वशिखः कविः ।
क्रुद्धेनाङ्गिरसा शप्तो गुणैरेतैर्विवर्जितः ॥८॥
8. suvarṇavarṇo nirdhūmaḥ saṁhatordhvaśikhaḥ kaviḥ ,
kruddhenāṅgirasā śapto guṇairetairvivarjitaḥ.
8. suvarṇavarṇaḥ nirdhūmaḥ saṃhata ūrdhvaśikhaḥ kaviḥ
kruddhena āṅgirasā śaptaḥ guṇaiḥ etaiḥ vivarjitaḥ
8. suvarṇavarṇaḥ nirdhūmaḥ saṃhata ūrdhvaśikhaḥ kaviḥ
kruddhena āṅgirasā śaptaḥ guṇaiḥ etaiḥ vivarjitaḥ
8. Once golden-colored, smokeless, with a compact, upward-pointing flame, and wise (kavi), he was cursed by the enraged Angirasa and thus deprived of these very qualities.
मरुतश्चूर्णितान्पश्य येऽहसन्त महोदधिम् ।
सुवर्णधारिणा नित्यमवशप्ता द्विजातिना ॥९॥
9. marutaścūrṇitānpaśya ye'hasanta mahodadhim ,
suvarṇadhāriṇā nityamavaśaptā dvijātinā.
9. marutaḥ cūrṇitān paśya ye ahasanta mahā udadhim
suvarṇadhāriṇā nityam avaśaptāḥ dvijātinā
9. paśya cūrṇitān marutaḥ ye mahā udadhim ahasanta
suvarṇadhāriṇā dvijātinā nityam avaśaptāḥ
9. Behold the pulverized Maruts, who once ridiculed the great ocean! They were perpetually cursed by a gold-wearing twice-born (dvijāti).
समो न त्वं द्विजातिभ्यः श्रेष्ठं विद्धि नराधिप ।
गर्भस्थान्ब्राह्मणान्सम्यङ्नमस्यति किल प्रभुः ॥१०॥
10. samo na tvaṁ dvijātibhyaḥ śreṣṭhaṁ viddhi narādhipa ,
garbhasthānbrāhmaṇānsamyaṅnamasyati kila prabhuḥ.
10. samaḥ na tvam dvijātibhyaḥ śreṣṭham viddhi narādhipa
garbhasthān brāhmaṇān samyak namasyati kila prabhuḥ
10. narādhipa tvam dvijātibhyaḥ samaḥ na śreṣṭham viddhi
kila prabhuḥ garbhasthān brāhmaṇān samyak namasyati
10. O ruler of men (narādhipa), you are not equal to the twice-born (dvijāti); know them to be superior! Indeed, a lord (prabhu) even properly bows to Brahmins while they are still in the womb.
दण्डकानां महद्राज्यं ब्राह्मणेन विनाशितम् ।
तालजङ्घं महत्क्षत्रमौर्वेणैकेन नाशितम् ॥११॥
11. daṇḍakānāṁ mahadrājyaṁ brāhmaṇena vināśitam ,
tālajaṅghaṁ mahatkṣatramaurveṇaikena nāśitam.
11. daṇḍakānām mahat rājyam brāhmaṇena vināśitam
tālajaṅgham mahat kṣatram aurveṇa ekena nāśitam
11. daṇḍakānām mahat rājyam brāhmaṇena vināśitam
tālajaṅgham mahat kṣatram ekena aurveṇa nāśitam
11. The great kingdom of the Daṇḍakas was destroyed by a Brahmin. The mighty warrior class (kṣatram) of the Tālajaṅghas was utterly destroyed by Urva (Aurva) alone.
त्वया च विपुलं राज्यं बलं धर्मः श्रुतं तथा ।
दत्तात्रेयप्रसादेन प्राप्तं परमदुर्लभम् ॥१२॥
12. tvayā ca vipulaṁ rājyaṁ balaṁ dharmaḥ śrutaṁ tathā ,
dattātreyaprasādena prāptaṁ paramadurlabham.
12. tvayā ca vipulam rājyam balam dharmaḥ śrutam
tathā dattātreyaprasādena prāptam paramadurlabham
12. dattātreyaprasādena tvayā ca vipulam rājyam balam
dharmaḥ tathā śrutam paramadurlabham prāptam
12. By the grace of Dattātreya, you have obtained a vast kingdom, strength, your natural law (dharma), and knowledge, which are exceedingly rare.
अग्निं त्वं यजसे नित्यं कस्मादर्जुन ब्राह्मणम् ।
स हि सर्वस्य लोकस्य हव्यवाट्किं न वेत्सि तम् ॥१३॥
13. agniṁ tvaṁ yajase nityaṁ kasmādarjuna brāhmaṇam ,
sa hi sarvasya lokasya havyavāṭkiṁ na vetsi tam.
13. agnim tvam yajase nityam kasmāt arjuna brāhmaṇam
saḥ hi sarvasya lokasya havyavāṭ kim na vetsi tam
13. arjuna kasmāt tvam nityam brāhmaṇam agnim yajase
hi saḥ sarvasya lokasya havyavāṭ kim tam na vetsi
13. O Arjuna, why do you constantly perform Vedic ritual (yajña) for Agni, the divine priest (brāhmaṇa)? Indeed, he is the carrier of oblations for all beings in the world. Do you not know him?
अथ वा ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठमनु भूतानुपालकम् ।
कर्तारं जीवलोकस्य कस्माज्जानन्विमुह्यसे ॥१४॥
14. atha vā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhamanu bhūtānupālakam ,
kartāraṁ jīvalokasya kasmājjānanvimuhyase.
14. atha vā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham anu bhūtānupālakam
kartāram jīvalokasya kasmāt jānan vimuhyase
14. atha vā jānan brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham anu bhūtānupālakam
jīvalokasya kartāram kasmāt vimuhyase
14. Or else, knowing him to be the supreme brahmin, and also the protector of all beings, and the creator of the world of living beings, why are you bewildered?
तथा प्रजापतिर्ब्रह्मा अव्यक्तः प्रभवाप्ययः ।
येनेदं निखिलं विश्वं जनितं स्थावरं चरम् ॥१५॥
15. tathā prajāpatirbrahmā avyaktaḥ prabhavāpyayaḥ ,
yenedaṁ nikhilaṁ viśvaṁ janitaṁ sthāvaraṁ caram.
15. tathā prajāpatiḥ brahmā avyaktaḥ prabhavāpyayaḥ
yena idam nikhilam viśvam janitam sthāvaram caram
15. tathā prajāpatiḥ brahmā avyaktaḥ prabhavāpyayaḥ
yena idam nikhilam sthāvaram caram viśvam janitam
15. Similarly, Prajāpati, Brahmā, is the unmanifest origin and dissolution. By whom this entire universe, both immobile and mobile, was generated.
अण्डजातं तु ब्रह्माणं केचिदिच्छन्त्यपण्डिताः ।
अण्डाद्भिन्नाद्बभुः शैला दिशोऽम्भः पृथिवी दिवम् ॥१६॥
16. aṇḍajātaṁ tu brahmāṇaṁ kecidicchantyapaṇḍitāḥ ,
aṇḍādbhinnādbabhuḥ śailā diśo'mbhaḥ pṛthivī divam.
16. aṇḍajātam tu brahmāṇam kecit icchanti apaṇḍitāḥ aṇḍāt
bhinnāt babhuḥ śailāḥ diśaḥ ambhaḥ pṛthivī divam
16. kecit apaṇḍitāḥ tu aṇḍajātam brahmāṇam icchanti aṇḍāt
bhinnāt śailāḥ diśaḥ ambhaḥ pṛthivī divam babhuḥ
16. Some uninformed people believe that Brahmā originated from an egg. From that separated egg, mountains, directions, water, earth, and the heavens appeared.
द्रष्टव्यं नैतदेवं हि कथं ज्यायस्तमो हि सः ।
स्मृतमाकाशमण्डं तु तस्माज्जातः पितामहः ॥१७॥
17. draṣṭavyaṁ naitadevaṁ hi kathaṁ jyāyastamo hi saḥ ,
smṛtamākāśamaṇḍaṁ tu tasmājjātaḥ pitāmahaḥ.
17. draṣṭavyam na etat evam hi katham jyāyastamaḥ hi
saḥ smṛtam ākāśamaṇḍam tu tasmāt jātaḥ pitāmahaḥ
17. etat evam na draṣṭavyam hi katham saḥ hi jyāyastamaḥ
tu ākāśamaṇḍam smṛtam tasmāt pitāmahaḥ jātaḥ
17. This should not be considered in that way; how indeed could he be the greatest then? Rather, the cosmic sphere of space (ākāśamaṇḍam) is remembered, and from that was born the grandfather (Brahmā).
तिष्ठेत्कथमिति ब्रूहि न किंचिद्धि तदा भवेत् ।
अहंकार इति प्रोक्तः सर्वतेजोगतः प्रभुः ॥१८॥
18. tiṣṭhetkathamiti brūhi na kiṁciddhi tadā bhavet ,
ahaṁkāra iti proktaḥ sarvatejogataḥ prabhuḥ.
18. tiṣṭhet katham iti brūhi na kiñcit hi tadā bhavet
ahaṅkāraḥ iti proktaḥ sarvatejogataḥ prabhuḥ
18. brūhi katham tiṣṭhet iti hi tadā kiñcit na bhavet
ahaṅkāraḥ iti proktaḥ sarvatejogataḥ prabhuḥ
18. Tell me, how could it exist? Indeed, nothing would have been there then. It is said that the ego (ahaṅkāra) is the lord (prabhu) endowed with all splendor.
नास्त्यण्डमस्ति तु ब्रह्मा स राजँल्लोकभावनः ।
इत्युक्तः स तदा तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्तमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. nāstyaṇḍamasti tu brahmā sa rājaँllokabhāvanaḥ ,
ityuktaḥ sa tadā tūṣṇīmabhūdvāyustamabravīt.
19. na asti aṇḍam asti tu brahmā sa rājan lokabhāvanaḥ
iti uktaḥ sa tadā tūṣṇīm abhūt vāyuḥ tam abravīt
19. aṇḍam na asti tu brahmā asti saḥ rājan lokabhāvanaḥ
iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā tūṣṇīm abhūt vāyuḥ tam abravīt
19. There is no egg (as the origin), but rather there is Brahmā, O King, the creator of the worlds. When he was told this, he then became silent, and Vāyu spoke to him.
