दुर्योधन उवाच ।
एहि क्षत्तर्द्रौपदीमानयस्व प्रियां भार्यां संमतां पाण्डवानाम् ।
संमार्जतां वेश्म परैतु शीघ्रमानन्दो नः सह दासीभिरस्तु ॥१॥
1. duryodhana uvāca ,
ehi kṣattardraupadīmānayasva; priyāṁ bhāryāṁ saṁmatāṁ pāṇḍavānām ,
saṁmārjatāṁ veśma paraitu śīghra;mānando naḥ saha dāsībhirastu.
1. duryodhana uvāca | ehi kṣattar draupadīm
ānayasva priyām bhāryām saṃmatām
pāṇḍavānām | saṃmārjatām veśma paraitu
śīghram ānandaḥ naḥ saha dāsībhiḥ astu
1. Duryodhana said: "Come, O charioteer, bring Draupadī, the beloved wife esteemed by the Pāṇḍavas. Let her quickly clean the house, and let our happiness be with the female servants."
विदुर उवाच ।
दुर्विभाव्यं भवति त्वादृशेन न मन्द संबुध्यसि पाशबद्धः ।
प्रपाते त्वं लम्बमानो न वेत्सि व्याघ्रान्मृगः कोपयसेऽतिबाल्यात् ॥२॥
2. vidura uvāca ,
durvibhāvyaṁ bhavati tvādṛśena; na manda saṁbudhyasi pāśabaddhaḥ ,
prapāte tvaṁ lambamāno na vetsi; vyāghrānmṛgaḥ kopayase'tibālyāt.

tvādṛśena na manda sambudhyasi pāśabaddhaḥ
| prapāte tvam lambamānaḥ na vetsi
vyāghrān mṛgaḥ kopayase ati-bālyāt
2. Vidura said: "It is difficult for someone like you to understand; O dull-witted one, you do not realize that you are bound by a snare. You are dangling on the edge of a precipice, yet you do not know it. Like a deer, you are angering tigers out of sheer foolishness."
आशीविषाः शिरसि ते पूर्णकोशा महाविषाः ।
मा कोपिष्ठाः सुमन्दात्मन्मा गमस्त्वं यमक्षयम् ॥३॥
3. āśīviṣāḥ śirasi te pūrṇakośā mahāviṣāḥ ,
mā kopiṣṭhāḥ sumandātmanmā gamastvaṁ yamakṣayam.
3. āśīviṣāḥ śirasi te pūrṇakośāḥ mahāviṣāḥ | mā
kopiṣṭhāḥ su-manda-ātman mā gamaḥ tvam yama-kṣayam
3. Highly venomous snakes, with full venom sacs, are upon your head. O utterly foolish soul, do not provoke them, and do not go to the abode of Yama (death).
न हि दासीत्वमापन्ना कृष्णा भवति भारत ।
अनीशेन हि राज्ञैषा पणे न्यस्तेति मे मतिः ॥४॥
4. na hi dāsītvamāpannā kṛṣṇā bhavati bhārata ,
anīśena hi rājñaiṣā paṇe nyasteti me matiḥ.
4. na hi dāsītvam āpannā kṛṣṇā bhavati bhārata |
anīśena hi rājñā eṣā paṇe nyastā iti me matiḥ
4. Vidura says: "Indeed, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) does not truly become a slave by having fallen into such a state, O Bhārata. For, it is my conviction that she was staked in the wager by a king who was not her master."
अयं धत्ते वेणुरिवात्मघाती फलं राजा धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रः ।
द्यूतं हि वैराय महाभयाय पक्वो न बुध्यत्ययमन्तकाले ॥५॥
5. ayaṁ dhatte veṇurivātmaghātī; phalaṁ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ ,
dyūtaṁ hi vairāya mahābhayāya; pakvo na budhyatyayamantakāle.
5. ayam dhatte veṇuḥ iva ātmaghātī
phalam rājā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ
dyūtam hi vairāya mahābhayāya
pakvaḥ na budhyati ayam antakāle
5. This son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, like a self-destructive bamboo, brings about his own ruin. Indeed, gambling leads to enmity and great fear. He does not comprehend this, although he is ripe for destruction, as the end approaches.
नारुंतुदः स्यान्न नृशंसवादी न हीनतः परमभ्याददीत ।
ययास्य वाचा पर उद्विजेत न तां वदेद्रुशतीं पापलोक्याम् ॥६॥
6. nāruṁtudaḥ syānna nṛśaṁsavādī; na hīnataḥ paramabhyādadīta ,
yayāsya vācā para udvijeta; na tāṁ vadedruśatīṁ pāpalokyām.
6. na arumtudaḥ syāt na nṛśaṃsavādī
na hīnataḥ param abhyādadīta
yayā asya vācā paraḥ udvijeta
na tām vadet ruśatīm pāpalokyām
6. One should not inflict wounds (upon others) nor speak cruelly. One should not seize another's possession from an inferior person. One should not utter such harsh speech, leading to ill repute, by which another person would become agitated.
समुच्चरन्त्यतिवादा हि वक्त्राद्यैराहतः शोचति रात्र्यहानि ।
परस्य नामर्मसु ते पतन्ति तान्पण्डितो नावसृजेत्परेषु ॥७॥
7. samuccarantyativādā hi vaktrā;dyairāhataḥ śocati rātryahāni ,
parasya nāmarmasu te patanti; tānpaṇḍito nāvasṛjetpareṣu.
7. samuccaranti ativādāḥ hi vaktrāt
yaiḥ āhataḥ śocati rātryahāni
parasya na amarmasu te patanti
tān paṇḍitaḥ na avasṛjet pareṣu
7. Indeed, excessive words issue forth from the mouth. One who is struck by them grieves day and night. Such words pierce the vital spots of others. Therefore, a wise person should not utter them against others.
अजो हि शस्त्रमखनत्किलैकः शस्त्रे विपन्ने पद्भिरपास्य भूमिम् ।
निकृन्तनं स्वस्य कण्ठस्य घोरं तद्वद्वैरं मा खनीः पाण्डुपुत्रैः ॥८॥
8. ajo hi śastramakhanatkilaikaḥ; śastre vipanne padbhirapāsya bhūmim ,
nikṛntanaṁ svasya kaṇṭhasya ghoraṁ; tadvadvairaṁ mā khanīḥ pāṇḍuputraiḥ.
8. ajaḥ hi śastram akhanat kila ekaḥ
śastre vipanne padbhiḥ apāsya bhūmim
nikṛntanam svasya kaṇṭhasya ghoram
tadvat vairam mā khanīḥ pāṇḍuputraiḥ
8. Indeed, a goat once dug up a weapon all by itself. When the weapon was found, it scraped away the earth with its feet, leading to the dreadful cutting of its own throat. Similarly, do not stir up enmity (vaira) with the sons of Pāṇḍu.
न किंचिदीड्यं प्रवदन्ति पापं वनेचरं वा गृहमेधिनं वा ।
तपस्विनं संपरिपूर्णविद्यं भषन्ति हैवं श्वनराः सदैव ॥९॥
9. na kiṁcidīḍyaṁ pravadanti pāpaṁ; vanecaraṁ vā gṛhamedhinaṁ vā ,
tapasvinaṁ saṁparipūrṇavidyaṁ; bhaṣanti haivaṁ śvanarāḥ sadaiva.
9. na kiñcit īḍyam pravadanti pāpam
vanacaram vā gṛhamedhinam vā
tapasvinam samparipūrṇavidyam
bhaṣanti ha evam śvanarāḥ sadaiva
9. These dog-men (śvanarāḥ) always bark in such a way that they do not declare anything praiseworthy to be a sin, whether it pertains to a forest dweller, a householder, or even an ascetic (tapasvin) possessing complete knowledge.
द्वारं सुघोरं नरकस्य जिह्मं न बुध्यसे धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्र ।
त्वामन्वेतारो बहवः कुरूणां द्यूतोदये सह दुःशासनेन ॥१०॥
10. dvāraṁ sughoraṁ narakasya jihmaṁ; na budhyase dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putra ,
tvāmanvetāro bahavaḥ kurūṇāṁ; dyūtodaye saha duḥśāsanena.
10. dvāram sughoram narakasya jihmam
na budhyase dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
putra tvām anvetāraḥ bahavaḥ kurūṇām
dyūta udaye saha duḥśāsanena
10. O son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, you do not comprehend this exceedingly dreadful and crooked gateway to hell. Many Kurus will follow you there, along with Duḥśāsana, because of this gambling (dyūta) enterprise.
मज्जन्त्यलाबूनि शिलाः प्लवन्ते मुह्यन्ति नावोऽम्भसि शश्वदेव ।
मूढो राजा धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो न मे वाचः पथ्यरूपाः शृणोति ॥११॥
11. majjantyalābūni śilāḥ plavante; muhyanti nāvo'mbhasi śaśvadeva ,
mūḍho rājā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putro; na me vācaḥ pathyarūpāḥ śṛṇoti.
11. majjanti alābūni śilāḥ plavante
muhyanti nāvaḥ ambhasi śaśvat eva
mūḍhaḥ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putraḥ
na me vācaḥ pathyarūpāḥ śṛṇoti
11. Gourds sink, rocks float, and boats are always bewildered in the water (ambhas). Similarly, the foolish king, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, does not listen to my beneficial words.
अन्तो नूनं भवितायं कुरूणां सुदारुणः सर्वहरो विनाशः ।
वाचः काव्याः सुहृदां पथ्यरूपा न श्रूयन्ते वर्धते लोभ एव ॥१२॥
12. anto nūnaṁ bhavitāyaṁ kurūṇāṁ; sudāruṇaḥ sarvaharo vināśaḥ ,
vācaḥ kāvyāḥ suhṛdāṁ pathyarūpā; na śrūyante vardhate lobha eva.
12. antaḥ nūnam bhavitā ayam kurūṇām
sudāruṇaḥ sarvaharah vināśaḥ
vācaḥ kāvyāḥ suhṛdām pathyarūpāḥ
na śrūyante vardhate lobhaḥ eva
12. Indeed, this will be a most dreadful, all-consuming destruction, signifying the end of the Kurus. The eloquent and beneficial words of friends are not being heeded; instead, only greed is growing.
