सोमस्य यज्ञो वरुणस्य यज्ञः प्रजापतेर्यज्ञ आसीत्प्रयागे ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥१॥
1. āstīka uvāca ,
somasya yajño varuṇasya yajñaḥ; prajāpateryajña āsītprayāge ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.

1. Astika said: The sacrifice of Soma, the sacrifice of Varuna, and the sacrifice of Prajapati took place at Prayaga. Likewise, regarding this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bharatas, O descendant of Parikṣit, may there be well-being for us and for our dear ones.
शक्रस्य यज्ञः शतसंख्य उक्तस्तथापरस्तुल्यसंख्यः शतं वै ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥२॥
2. śakrasya yajñaḥ śatasaṁkhya ukta;stathāparastulyasaṁkhyaḥ śataṁ vai ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.
2. śakrasya yajñaḥ śatasaṃkhyaḥ uktaḥ
tathā aparaḥ tulyasaṃkhyaḥ śatam vai
tathā yajñaḥ ayam tava bhāratāgrya
pārikṣita svasti naḥ astu priyebhyaḥ
2. Indra's hundred sacrifices are spoken of, and another hundred sacrifices of equal number are also indeed mentioned. Likewise, regarding this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bharatas, O descendant of Parikṣit, may there be well-being for us and for our dear ones.
यमस्य यज्ञो हरिमेधसश्च यथा यज्ञो रन्तिदेवस्य राज्ञः ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥३॥
3. yamasya yajño harimedhasaśca; yathā yajño rantidevasya rājñaḥ ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.
3. yamasya yajñaḥ harimedhasaḥ ca yathā
yajñaḥ rantidevasya rājñaḥ tathā
yajñaḥ ayam tava bhārata agrya
pārikṣita svasti naḥ astu priyebhyaḥ
3. Just as the sacrifice of Yama, and that of Harimedhas, and the sacrifice of King Rantideva, so too is this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bhāratas, O son of Parikṣit. May there be welfare for us and our loved ones.
गयस्य यज्ञः शशबिन्दोश्च राज्ञो यज्ञस्तथा वैश्रवणस्य राज्ञः ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥४॥
4. gayasya yajñaḥ śaśabindośca rājño; yajñastathā vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.
4. gayasya yajñaḥ śaśabindoḥ ca rājñaḥ
yajñaḥ tathā vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ
tathā yajñaḥ ayam tava bhārata agrya
pārikṣita svasti naḥ astu priyebhyaḥ
4. Just as the sacrifice of Gaya, and that of King Śaśabindu, and similarly the sacrifice of King Vaiśravaṇa, so too is this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bhāratas, O son of Parikṣit. May there be welfare for us and our loved ones.
नृगस्य यज्ञस्त्वजमीढस्य चासीद्यथा यज्ञो दाशरथेश्च राज्ञः ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥५॥
5. nṛgasya yajñastvajamīḍhasya cāsī;dyathā yajño dāśaratheśca rājñaḥ ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.
5. nṛgasya yajñaḥ tu ajamīḍhasya ca āsīt
yathā yajñaḥ dāśaratheḥ ca rājñaḥ
tathā yajñaḥ ayam tava bhārata agrya
pārikṣita svasti naḥ astu priyebhyaḥ
5. Just as the sacrifice of Nṛga, and that of Ajamiḍha, and also the sacrifice of King Dāśarathi, so too is this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bhāratas, O son of Parikṣit. May there be welfare for us and our loved ones.
यज्ञः श्रुतो नो दिवि देवसूनोर्युधिष्ठिरस्याजमीढस्य राज्ञः ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥६॥
6. yajñaḥ śruto no divi devasūno;ryudhiṣṭhirasyājamīḍhasya rājñaḥ ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.
6. yajñaḥ śrutaḥ naḥ divi devasūnoḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya ajamīḍhasya rājñaḥ tathā
yajñaḥ ayam tava bhārata agrya
pārikṣita svasti naḥ astu priyebhyaḥ
6. Just as the sacrifice of King Yudhishthira, son of a god and descendant of Ajamiḍha, is renowned to us even in heaven, so too is this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bhāratas, O son of Parikṣit. May there be welfare for us and our loved ones.
कृष्णस्य यज्ञः सत्यवत्याः सुतस्य स्वयं च कर्म प्रचकार यत्र ।
तथा यज्ञोऽयं तव भारताग्र्य पारिक्षित स्वस्ति नोऽस्तु प्रियेभ्यः ॥७॥
7. kṛṣṇasya yajñaḥ satyavatyāḥ sutasya; svayaṁ ca karma pracakāra yatra ,
tathā yajño'yaṁ tava bhāratāgrya; pārikṣita svasti no'stu priyebhyaḥ.
7. kṛṣṇasya yajñaḥ satyavatyāḥ sutasya
svayam ca karma pracakāra yatra
tathā yajñaḥ ayam tava bhārata agrya
pārikṣita svasti naḥ astu priyebhyaḥ
7. Just as the sacrifice of Kṛṣṇa (Vyāsa), the son of Satyavatī, in which he himself performed the ritual, so too is this sacrifice of yours, O foremost among Bhāratas, O son of Parikṣit. May there be welfare for us and our loved ones.
इमे हि ते सूर्यहुताशवर्चसः समासते वृत्रहणः क्रतुं यथा ।
नैषां ज्ञानं विद्यते ज्ञातुमद्य दत्तं येभ्यो न प्रणश्येत्कथंचित् ॥८॥
8. ime hi te sūryahutāśavarcasaḥ; samāsate vṛtrahaṇaḥ kratuṁ yathā ,
naiṣāṁ jñānaṁ vidyate jñātumadya; dattaṁ yebhyo na praṇaśyetkathaṁcit.
8. ime hi te sūryahutāśavarcasaḥ
samāsate vṛtrahaṇaḥ kratum yathā na
eṣām jñānam vidyate jñātum adya
dattam yebhyaḥ na praṇaśyet kathaṃcit
8. Indeed, these individuals, radiant like the sun and fire, assemble for the sacrifice (kratu) just as Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, would. Their profound wisdom (jñāna) cannot be fully comprehended today, and whatever is imparted to them will never perish in any way.
ऋत्विक्समो नास्ति लोकेषु चैव द्वैपायनेनेति विनिश्चितं मे ।
एतस्य शिष्या हि क्षितिं चरन्ति सर्वर्त्विजः कर्मसु स्वेषु दक्षाः ॥९॥
9. ṛtviksamo nāsti lokeṣu caiva; dvaipāyaneneti viniścitaṁ me ,
etasya śiṣyā hi kṣitiṁ caranti; sarvartvijaḥ karmasu sveṣu dakṣāḥ.
9. ṛtvik samaḥ na asti lokeṣu ca eva
dvaipāyanena iti viniścitam me
etasya śiṣyāḥ hi kṣitim caranti
sarvartvijaḥ karmasu sveṣu dakṣāḥ
9. Indeed, there is no one in these worlds (loka) equal to an officiating priest (ṛtvik); this has been definitively ascertained by Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), and is my firm conviction. For his disciples, all of whom are proficient officiating priests (ṛtvik) in their own duties (karma), traverse the earth.
विभावसुश्चित्रभानुर्महात्मा हिरण्यरेता विश्वभुक्कृष्णवर्त्मा ।
प्रदक्षिणावर्तशिखः प्रदीप्तो हव्यं तवेदं हुतभुग्वष्टि देवः ॥१०॥
10. vibhāvasuścitrabhānurmahātmā; hiraṇyaretā viśvabhukkṛṣṇavartmā ,
pradakṣiṇāvartaśikhaḥ pradīpto; havyaṁ tavedaṁ hutabhugvaṣṭi devaḥ.
10. vibhāvasuḥ citrabhānuḥ mahātmā
hiraṇyaretā viśvabhuk kṛṣṇavartmā
pradakṣiṇāvarttaśikhaḥ pradīptaḥ
havyam tava idam hutabhuk vaṣṭi devaḥ
10. The god (deva) Agni, who is known as Vibhāvasu (possessing light/wealth), whose flames are brilliant (citrabhānu), the great-souled one (mahā-ātman), who has golden seed (hiraṇyaretas), who consumes all (viśvabhuk), and whose path is dark (kṛṣṇavartman), with intensely blazing (pradīpta) flames whirling clockwise (pradakṣiṇāvarttaśikha) — he desires and consumes this offering (havya) of yours.
नेह त्वदन्यो विद्यते जीवलोके समो नृपः पालयिता प्रजानाम् ।
धृत्या च ते प्रीतमनाः सदाहं त्वं वा राजा धर्मराजो यमो वा ॥११॥
11. neha tvadanyo vidyate jīvaloke; samo nṛpaḥ pālayitā prajānām ,
dhṛtyā ca te prītamanāḥ sadāhaṁ; tvaṁ vā rājā dharmarājo yamo vā.
11. na iha tvat anyaḥ vidyate jīvaloke
samaḥ nṛpaḥ pālayitā prajānām
dhṛtyā ca te prītamanāḥ sadā aham
tvam vā rājā dharmarājaḥ yamaḥ vā
11. Here in the world of living beings (jīvaloke), there is no other king equal to you who protects the subjects. And I am always delighted in mind because of your steadfastness (dhṛtyā). You are either a true king, or indeed the King of Natural Law (Dharmarāja) himself, or Yama.
शक्रः साक्षाद्वज्रपाणिर्यथेह त्राता लोकेऽस्मिंस्त्वं तथेह प्रजानाम् ।
मतस्त्वं नः पुरुषेन्द्रेह लोके न च त्वदन्यो गृहपतिरस्ति यज्ञे ॥१२॥
12. śakraḥ sākṣādvajrapāṇiryatheha; trātā loke'smiṁstvaṁ tatheha prajānām ,
matastvaṁ naḥ puruṣendreha loke; na ca tvadanyo gṛhapatirasti yajñe.
12. śakraḥ sākṣāt vajrapāṇiḥ yathā iha
trātā loke asmin tvam tathā iha prajānām
mataḥ tvam naḥ puruṣendra iha loke
na ca tvat anyaḥ gṛhapatiḥ asti yajñe
12. Just as Indra (Śakra) himself, bearing the thunderbolt (vajrapāṇi), is the protector here in this world, so too are you the protector of subjects here. O chief among men (puruṣendra), we consider you thus in this world. And in a ritual (yajña), there is no other householder (gṛhapati) besides you.
खट्वाङ्गनाभागदिलीपकल्पो ययातिमान्धातृसमप्रभावः ।
आदित्यतेजःप्रतिमानतेजा भीष्मो यथा भ्राजसि सुव्रतस्त्वम् ॥१३॥
13. khaṭvāṅganābhāgadilīpakalpo; yayātimāndhātṛsamaprabhāvaḥ ,
ādityatejaḥpratimānatejā; bhīṣmo yathā bhrājasi suvratastvam.
13. khaṭvāṅganābhāgadalīpakalpaḥ yayātimāndhātṛsamaprabhāvaḥ
ādityatejaḥpratimānatejāḥ bhīṣmaḥ yathā bhrājasi suvrataḥ tvam
13. O Bhishma, you who uphold excellent vows, shine forth like King Khaṭvāṅga, Nābhāga, and Dilīpa. Your might is equal to Yayāti and Māndhātā, and your splendor rivals the brilliance of the sun.
वाल्मीकिवत्ते निभृतं सुधैर्यं वसिष्ठवत्ते नियतश्च कोपः ।
प्रभुत्वमिन्द्रेण समं मतं मे द्युतिश्च नारायणवद्विभाति ॥१४॥
14. vālmīkivatte nibhṛtaṁ sudhairyaṁ; vasiṣṭhavatte niyataśca kopaḥ ,
prabhutvamindreṇa samaṁ mataṁ me; dyutiśca nārāyaṇavadvibhāti.
14. vālmīkivat te nibhṛtam sudhairyam
vasiṣṭhavat te niyataḥ ca kopaḥ
prabhutvam indreṇa samam matam
me dyutiḥ ca nārāyaṇavat vibhāti
14. Your profound steadfastness is like Valmiki's, and your anger is controlled like Vasishtha's. I consider your sovereignty to be equal to Indra's, and your brilliance shines forth like Narayana.
यमो यथा धर्मविनिश्चयज्ञः कृष्णो यथा सर्वगुणोपपन्नः ।
श्रियां निवासोऽसि यथा वसूनां निधानभूतोऽसि तथा क्रतूनाम् ॥१५॥
15. yamo yathā dharmaviniścayajñaḥ; kṛṣṇo yathā sarvaguṇopapannaḥ ,
śriyāṁ nivāso'si yathā vasūnāṁ; nidhānabhūto'si tathā kratūnām.
15. yamaḥ yathā dharmaviniścayajñaḥ
kṛṣṇaḥ yathā sarvaguṇopapannaḥ
śriyām nivāsaḥ asi yathā vasūnām
nidhānabhūtaḥ asi tathā kratūnām
15. You are a knower of righteous judgments like Yama, and you are endowed with all virtues like Krishna. Just as you are the abode of prosperity, so too are you a repository of sacrifices for the Vasus.
दम्भोद्भवेनासि समो बलेन रामो यथा शस्त्रविदस्त्रविच्च ।
और्वत्रिताभ्यामसि तुल्यतेजा दुष्प्रेक्षणीयोऽसि भगीरथो वा ॥१६॥
16. dambhodbhavenāsi samo balena; rāmo yathā śastravidastravicca ,
aurvatritābhyāmasi tulyatejā; duṣprekṣaṇīyo'si bhagīratho vā.
16. dambhodbhavena asi samaḥ balena
rāmaḥ yathā śastravit astravit ca
aurvatritābhyām asi tulyatejāḥ
duṣprekṣaṇīyaḥ asi bhagīrathaḥ vā
16. You are equal in strength to Dambhodbhava, and like Rama, you are skilled in weapons and missiles. Your brilliance is comparable to Aurva and Trita. You are formidable to behold, or like Bhagiratha (in your great achievements/resolve).
सूत उवाच ।
एवं स्तुताः सर्व एव प्रसन्ना राजा सदस्या ऋत्विजो हव्यवाहः ।
तेषां दृष्ट्वा भावितानीङ्गितानि प्रोवाच राजा जनमेजयोऽथ ॥१७॥
17. sūta uvāca ,
evaṁ stutāḥ sarva eva prasannā; rājā sadasyā ṛtvijo havyavāhaḥ ,
teṣāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhāvitānīṅgitāni; provāca rājā janamejayo'tha.
17. sūtaḥ uvāca evam stutāḥ sarve eva
prasannāḥ rājā sadasyāḥ ṛtvijaḥ
havyavāhaḥ teṣām dṛṣṭvā bhāvitāni
iṅgitāni provāca rājā janamejayaḥ atha
17. Suta said: Thus praised, the king, the assembly members, the priests, and indeed Agni, the bearer of oblations, were all pleased. Then, seeing their displayed gestures, King Janamejaya spoke.
