गान्धार्युवाच ।
सोमदत्तसुतं पश्य युयुधानेन पातितम् ।
वितुद्यमानं विहगैर्बहुभिर्माधवान्तिके ॥१॥

somadattasutaṁ paśya yuyudhānena pātitam ,

1. Gandhārī spoke: 'Behold Somadatta's son, struck down by Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki), and now being pecked at by many birds near Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa).'
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तः सोमदत्तो जनार्दन ।
युयुधानं महेष्वासं गर्हयन्निव दृश्यते ॥२॥
2. putraśokābhisaṁtaptaḥ somadatto janārdana ,
yuyudhānaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ garhayanniva dṛśyate.

2. O Janardana, Somadatta, deeply distressed by the grief for his son, appears as if reproaching the great archer Yuyudhana.
असौ तु भूरिश्रवसो माता शोकपरिप्लुता ।
आश्वासयति भर्तारं सोमदत्तमनिन्दिता ॥३॥
3. asau tu bhūriśravaso mātā śokapariplutā ,
āśvāsayati bhartāraṁ somadattamaninditā.

3. But that blameless mother of Bhuriśravas, who is overwhelmed with sorrow, consoles her husband Somadatta.
दिष्ट्या नेदं महाराज दारुणं भरतक्षयम् ।
कुरुसंक्रन्दनं घोरं युगान्तमनुपश्यसि ॥४॥
4. diṣṭyā nedaṁ mahārāja dāruṇaṁ bharatakṣayam ,
kurusaṁkrandanaṁ ghoraṁ yugāntamanupaśyasi.
4. diṣṭyā na idam mahārāja dāruṇam bharatakṣayam
kurusaṃkrandanam ghoram yugāntam anupaśyasi
4. mahārāja diṣṭyā idam dāruṇam bharatakṣayam
ghoram kurusaṃkrandanam yugāntam na anupaśyasi
4. O great king, fortunately you do not have to witness this terrible destruction of the Bharatas, this fearful lamentation of the Kurus, which resembles the end of an age.
दिष्ट्या यूपध्वजं वीरं पुत्रं भूरिसहस्रदम् ।
अनेकक्रतुयज्वानं निहतं नाद्य पश्यसि ॥५॥
5. diṣṭyā yūpadhvajaṁ vīraṁ putraṁ bhūrisahasradam ,
anekakratuyajvānaṁ nihataṁ nādya paśyasi.
5. diṣṭyā yūpadhvajam vīram putram bhūrisahasradam
anekakratuyajvānam nihatam na adya paśyasi
5. diṣṭyā adya yūpadhvajam vīram bhūrisahasradam

5. Fortunately, you do not see today your son, the hero, whose banner was the post for Vedic rituals, the giver of many thousands, who had performed many Vedic rituals (yajña), now slain.
दिष्ट्या स्नुषाणामाक्रन्दे घोरं विलपितं बहु ।
न शृणोषि महाराज सारसीनामिवार्णवे ॥६॥
6. diṣṭyā snuṣāṇāmākrande ghoraṁ vilapitaṁ bahu ,
na śṛṇoṣi mahārāja sārasīnāmivārṇave.

bahu na śṛṇoṣi mahārāja sārasīṇām iva arṇave

6. It is fortunate, O great king, that you do not hear the loud, terrible lamentation of your daughters-in-law, which is like the cries of female cranes in the water.
एकवस्त्रानुसंवीताः प्रकीर्णासितमूर्धजाः ।
स्नुषास्ते परिधावन्ति हतापत्या हतेश्वराः ॥७॥
7. ekavastrānusaṁvītāḥ prakīrṇāsitamūrdhajāḥ ,
snuṣāste paridhāvanti hatāpatyā hateśvarāḥ.
7. ekavastrānusaṃvītāḥ prakīrṇāsitamūrdhajāḥ
snuṣāḥ te paridhāvanti hatāpatyāḥ hateśvarāḥ
7. te snuṣāḥ ekavastrānusaṃvītāḥ prakīrṇāsitamūrdhajāḥ

7. Your daughters-in-law, wearing single garments, with their black hair dishevelled, run about, having lost their children and their husbands.
श्वापदैर्भक्ष्यमाणं त्वमहो दिष्ट्या न पश्यसि ।
छिन्नबाहुं नरव्याघ्रमर्जुनेन निपातितम् ॥८॥
8. śvāpadairbhakṣyamāṇaṁ tvamaho diṣṭyā na paśyasi ,
chinnabāhuṁ naravyāghramarjunena nipātitam.
8. śvāpadaiḥ bhakṣyamāṇam tvam aho diṣṭyā na paśyasi
chinnabāhum naravyāghram arjunena nipātitam
8. aho tvam diṣṭyā śvāpadaiḥ bhakṣyamāṇam arjunena
nipātitam chinnabāhum naravyāghram na paśyasi
8. Alas! It is fortunate that you do not see the mighty warrior (naravyāghra), with severed arms, struck down by Arjuna, being devoured by wild animals.
शलं विनिहतं संख्ये भूरिश्रवसमेव च ।
स्नुषाश्च विधवाः सर्वा दिष्ट्या नाद्येह पश्यसि ॥९॥
9. śalaṁ vinihataṁ saṁkhye bhūriśravasameva ca ,
snuṣāśca vidhavāḥ sarvā diṣṭyā nādyeha paśyasi.
9. śalam vinihatam saṃkhye bhūriśravasam eva ca snuṣāḥ
ca vidhavāḥ sarvāḥ diṣṭyā na adya iha paśyasi
9. diṣṭyā adya iha sarvāḥ snuṣāḥ vidhavāḥ ca saṃkhye
vinihatam śalam eva ca bhūriśravasam na paśyasi
9. And today, it is fortunate that you do not see here all your daughters-in-law as widows, nor Śala and Bhūriśravas, slain in battle.
दिष्ट्या तत्काञ्चनं छत्रं यूपकेतोर्महात्मनः ।
विनिकीर्णं रथोपस्थे सौमदत्तेर्न पश्यसि ॥१०॥
10. diṣṭyā tatkāñcanaṁ chatraṁ yūpaketormahātmanaḥ ,
vinikīrṇaṁ rathopasthe saumadatterna paśyasi.
10. diṣṭyā tat kāñcanam chatram yūpaketoḥ mahātmanaḥ
vinikīrṇam rathopasthe saumadatteḥ na paśyasi
10. diṣṭyā tat mahātmanaḥ yūpaketoḥ saumadatteḥ
kāñcanam chatram rathopasthe vinikīrṇam na paśyasi
10. Fortunately, do you not see that golden parasol of the great-souled Saumadatti (Bhūriśravas), also known as Yūpaketu, lying scattered on the floor of his chariot?
अमूस्तु भूरिश्रवसो भार्याः सात्यकिना हतम् ।
परिवार्यानुशोचन्ति भर्तारमसितेक्षणाः ॥११॥
11. amūstu bhūriśravaso bhāryāḥ sātyakinā hatam ,
parivāryānuśocanti bhartāramasitekṣaṇāḥ.
11. amūḥ tu bhūriśravasaḥ bhāryāḥ sātyakinā hatam
parivārya anuśocanti bhartāram asitekṣaṇāḥ
11. tu amūḥ asitekṣaṇāḥ bhūriśravasaḥ bhāryāḥ
sātyakinā hatam bhartāram parivārya anuśocanti
11. But these dark-eyed wives of Bhūriśravas are lamenting, having surrounded their husband who was slain by Sātyaki.
एता विलप्य बहुलं भर्तृशोकेन कर्शिताः ।
पतन्त्यभिमुखा भूमौ कृपणं बत केशव ॥१२॥
12. etā vilapya bahulaṁ bhartṛśokena karśitāḥ ,
patantyabhimukhā bhūmau kṛpaṇaṁ bata keśava.
12. etāḥ vilapya bahulam bhartṛśokena karśitāḥ
patanti abhimukhāḥ bhūmau kṛpaṇam bata keśava
12. he keśava bata etāḥ bhartṛśokena karśitāḥ
vilapya bahulam abhimukhāḥ bhūmau kṛpaṇam patanti
12. O Keśava, alas! These women, emaciated by the grief for their husband, having lamented greatly, fall miserably to the ground, facing (him).
बीभत्सुरतिबीभत्सं कर्मेदमकरोत्कथम् ।
प्रमत्तस्य यदच्छैत्सीद्बाहुं शूरस्य यज्वनः ॥१३॥
13. bībhatsuratibībhatsaṁ karmedamakarotkatham ,
pramattasya yadacchaitsīdbāhuṁ śūrasya yajvanaḥ.
13. bībhatsuḥ atibībhatsam karma idam akarot katham |
pramattasya yat acchaitsīt bāhum śūrasya yajvanaḥ
13. katham bībhatsuḥ idam atibībhatsam karma akarot
yat pramattasya śūrasya yajvanaḥ bāhum acchaitsīt
13. How could Bibhatsu (Arjuna) have performed this extremely heinous deed, namely, that he cut off the arm of that brave performer of Vedic rituals (yajvan) who was heedless?
ततः पापतरं कर्म कृतवानपि सात्यकिः ।
यस्मात्प्रायोपविष्टस्य प्राहार्षीत्संशितात्मनः ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ pāpataraṁ karma kṛtavānapi sātyakiḥ ,
yasmātprāyopaviṣṭasya prāhārṣītsaṁśitātmanaḥ.
14. tataḥ pāpataraṃ karma kṛtavān api sātyakiḥ
yasmāt prāyopaviṣṭasya prāhārṣīt saṃśitātmanaḥ
14. tataḥ sātyakiḥ api pāpataraṃ karma kṛtavān
yasmāt prāyopaviṣṭasya saṃśitātmanaḥ prāhārṣīt
14. Even Satyaki committed an even greater sin, for he struck down a man who was observing a fast unto death and whose soul was disciplined.
एको द्वाभ्यां हतः शेषे त्वमधर्मेण धार्मिकः ।
इति यूपध्वजस्यैताः स्त्रियः क्रोशन्ति माधव ॥१५॥
15. eko dvābhyāṁ hataḥ śeṣe tvamadharmeṇa dhārmikaḥ ,
iti yūpadhvajasyaitāḥ striyaḥ krośanti mādhava.
15. ekaḥ dvābhyām hataḥ śeṣe tvam adharmeṇa dhārmikaḥ
iti yūpadhvajasya etāḥ striyaḥ krośanti mādhava
15. mādhava ekaḥ dvābhyām hataḥ (asti) tvam ca śeṣe adharmeṇa
dhārmikaḥ (asi) iti yūpadhvajasya etāḥ striyaḥ krośanti
15. "One man was killed by two, and in this remaining situation, you, O righteous one, have allowed this through unrighteousness (adharma)!" Thus, O Madhava, these women of Yūpadhvaja lament.
भार्या यूपध्वजस्यैषा करसंमितमध्यमा ।
कृत्वोत्सङ्गे भुजं भर्तुः कृपणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥१६॥
16. bhāryā yūpadhvajasyaiṣā karasaṁmitamadhyamā ,
kṛtvotsaṅge bhujaṁ bhartuḥ kṛpaṇaṁ paryadevayat.
16. bhāryā yūpadhvajasya eṣā karasaṃmitamadhyamā
kṛtvā utsaṅge bhujaṃ bhartuḥ kṛpaṇaṃ paryadevayat
16. yūpadhvajasya eṣā karasaṃmitamadhyamā bhāryā
bhartuḥ bhujaṃ utsaṅge kṛtvā kṛpaṇaṃ paryadevayat
16. The slender-waisted wife of Yūpadhvaja, taking her husband's arm onto her lap, lamented piteously.
अयं स रशनोत्कर्षी पीनस्तनविमर्दनः ।
नाभ्यूरुजघनस्पर्शी नीवीविस्रंसनः करः ॥१७॥
17. ayaṁ sa raśanotkarṣī pīnastanavimardanaḥ ,
nābhyūrujaghanasparśī nīvīvisraṁsanaḥ karaḥ.
17. ayam saḥ raśanotkarṣī pīnastanavimardanaḥ
nābhyūrujaghanasparśī nīvīvisraṃsanaḥ karaḥ
17. ayam saḥ karaḥ (asti) raśanotkarṣī pīnastanavimardanaḥ
nābhyūrujaghanasparśī nīvīvisraṃsanaḥ
17. "This is that very hand which used to pull at my girdle, press against my full breasts, touch my navel, thighs, and hips, and loosen the knot of my lower garment."
वासुदेवस्य सांनिध्ये पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।
युध्यतः समरेऽन्येन प्रमत्तस्य निपातितः ॥१८॥
18. vāsudevasya sāṁnidhye pārthenākliṣṭakarmaṇā ,
yudhyataḥ samare'nyena pramattasya nipātitaḥ.
18. vāsudevasya sāṃnidhy pārthena akliṣṭakarmaṇā
yudhyataḥ samare anyena pramattasya nipātitaḥ
18. pārthena akliṣṭakarmaṇā vāsudevasya sāṃnidhy
samare anyena yudhyataḥ pramattasya nipātitaḥ
18. In the presence of Vāsudeva, Pārtha, whose actions are unfailing, struck down an opponent in battle who was fighting another and was thus distracted.
किं नु वक्ष्यसि संसत्सु कथासु च जनार्दन ।
अर्जुनस्य महत्कर्म स्वयं वा स किरीटवान् ॥१९॥
19. kiṁ nu vakṣyasi saṁsatsu kathāsu ca janārdana ,
arjunasya mahatkarma svayaṁ vā sa kirīṭavān.
19. kiṃ nu vakṣyasi saṃsatsu kathāsu ca janārdana
arjunasya mahat karma svayaṃ vā sa kirīṭavān
19. janārdana kiṃ nu saṃsatsu kathāsu ca arjunasya
mahat karma vakṣyasi vā sa kirīṭavān svayaṃ
19. O Janārdana, what indeed will you say in assemblies and stories about Arjuna's great deed, or what will that crowned one (Arjuna) himself say?
इत्येवं गर्हयित्वैषा तूष्णीमास्ते वराङ्गना ।
तामेतामनुशोचन्ति सपत्न्यः स्वामिव स्नुषाम् ॥२०॥
20. ityevaṁ garhayitvaiṣā tūṣṇīmāste varāṅganā ,
tāmetāmanuśocanti sapatnyaḥ svāmiva snuṣām.
20. iti evaṃ garhayitvā eṣā tūṣṇīm āste varāṅganā
tām etām anuśocanti sapatnyaḥ svām iva snuṣām
20. eṣā varāṅganā iti evaṃ garhayitvā tūṣṇīm āste
sapatnyaḥ tām etām svām snuṣām iva anuśocanti
20. Having reproached in this manner, this excellent woman (Draupadi) remains silent. Her co-wives grieve for her as if she were their own daughter-in-law.
गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
निहतः सहदेवेन भागिनेयेन मातुलः ॥२१॥
21. gāndhārarājaḥ śakunirbalavānsatyavikramaḥ ,
nihataḥ sahadevena bhāgineyena mātulaḥ.
21. gāndhārarājaḥ śakuniḥ balavān satyavikramaḥ
nihataḥ sahadevena bhāgineyena mātulaḥ
21. balavān satyavikramaḥ gāndhārarājaḥ śakuniḥ
bhāgineyena sahadevena nihataḥ mātulaḥ
21. King Shakuni of Gandhāra, powerful and of true valor, was struck down by Sahadeva; the maternal uncle (Shakuni was killed) by the nephew (Sahadeva).
यः पुरा हेमदण्डाभ्यां व्यजनाभ्यां स्म वीज्यते ।
स एष पक्षिभिः पक्षैः शयान उपवीज्यते ॥२२॥
22. yaḥ purā hemadaṇḍābhyāṁ vyajanābhyāṁ sma vījyate ,
sa eṣa pakṣibhiḥ pakṣaiḥ śayāna upavījyate.
22. yaḥ purā hemadaṇḍābhyām vyajanābhyām sma vījyate
saḥ eṣaḥ pakṣibhiḥ pakṣaiḥ śayānaḥ upavījyate
22. yaḥ purā hemadaṇḍābhyām vyajanābhyām sma vījyate
saḥ eṣaḥ śayānaḥ pakṣibhiḥ pakṣaiḥ upavījyate
22. He who was formerly fanned by two fans with golden staffs is now, while lying down, being fanned by birds with their wings.
यः स्म रूपाणि कुरुते शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
तस्य मायाविनो माया दग्धाः पाण्डवतेजसा ॥२३॥
23. yaḥ sma rūpāṇi kurute śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
tasya māyāvino māyā dagdhāḥ pāṇḍavatejasā.
23. yaḥ sma rūpāṇi kurute śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
tasya māyāvinaḥ māyāḥ dagdhāḥ pāṇḍavatejasā
23. yaḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ rūpāṇi kurute sma
tasya māyāvinaḥ māyāḥ pāṇḍavatejasā dagdhāḥ
23. The illusions (māyā) of that magician (māyāvin), who used to create forms by hundreds and thousands, have been burned by the power of the Pāṇḍavas.
मायया निकृतिप्रज्ञो जितवान्यो युधिष्ठिरम् ।
सभायां विपुलं राज्यं स पुनर्जीवितं जितः ॥२४॥
24. māyayā nikṛtiprajño jitavānyo yudhiṣṭhiram ,
sabhāyāṁ vipulaṁ rājyaṁ sa punarjīvitaṁ jitaḥ.
24. māyayā nikṛtiprajñaḥ jitavān yaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram
sabhāyām vipulam rājyam saḥ punaḥ jīvitam jitaḥ
24. yaḥ nikṛtiprajñaḥ māyayā yudhiṣṭhiram jitavān
sabhāyām vipulam rājyam saḥ punaḥ jīvitam jitaḥ
24. He who, with his cunning intellect, vanquished Yudhiṣṭhira through illusion (māyā) and won a vast kingdom in the assembly, that very person is now, in turn, conquered and deprived of his own life.
शकुन्ताः शकुनिं कृष्ण समन्तात्पर्युपासते ।
कितवं मम पुत्राणां विनाशायोपशिक्षितम् ॥२५॥
25. śakuntāḥ śakuniṁ kṛṣṇa samantātparyupāsate ,
kitavaṁ mama putrāṇāṁ vināśāyopaśikṣitam.
25. śakuntāḥ śakunim kṛṣṇa samantāt paryupāsate
kitavam mama putrāṇām vināśāya upaśikṣitam
25. kṛṣṇa śakuntāḥ samantāt śakunim paryupāsate

25. O Kṛṣṇa, birds are surrounding that gambler Śakuni from all sides, he who was instructed for the destruction of my sons.
एतेनैतन्महद्वैरं प्रसक्तं पाण्डवैः सह ।
वधाय मम पुत्राणामात्मनः सगणस्य च ॥२६॥
26. etenaitanmahadvairaṁ prasaktaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
vadhāya mama putrāṇāmātmanaḥ sagaṇasya ca.
26. etena etat mahat vairam prasaktam pāṇḍavaiḥ
saha vadhāya mama putrāṇām ātmanaḥ sagaṇasya ca
26. etena etat mahat vairam pāṇḍavaiḥ saha prasaktam
mama putrāṇām ātmanaḥ sagaṇasya ca vadhāya
26. Because of this, a great enmity has arisen with the Pāṇḍavas, leading to the destruction of my sons, myself (ātman), and my followers.
यथैव मम पुत्राणां लोकाः शस्त्रजिताः प्रभो ।
एवमस्यापि दुर्बुद्धेर्लोकाः शस्त्रेण वै जिताः ॥२७॥
27. yathaiva mama putrāṇāṁ lokāḥ śastrajitāḥ prabho ,
evamasyāpi durbuddherlokāḥ śastreṇa vai jitāḥ.
27. yathā eva mama putrāṇām lokāḥ śastrajitāḥ prabho
evam asya api durbuddheḥ lokāḥ śastreṇa vai jitāḥ
27. prabho yathā eva mama putrāṇām lokāḥ śastrajitāḥ
evam asya durbuddheḥ api lokāḥ śastreṇa vai jitāḥ
27. O Lord, just as the realms of my sons have been won through battle, so too have the realms of this evil-minded one indeed been conquered by force of arms.
कथं च नायं तत्रापि पुत्रान्मे भ्रातृभिः सह ।
विरोधयेदृजुप्रज्ञाननृजुर्मधुसूदन ॥२८॥
28. kathaṁ ca nāyaṁ tatrāpi putrānme bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
virodhayedṛjuprajñānanṛjurmadhusūdana.
28. katham ca na ayam tatra api putrān me bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha virodhayet ṛjuprājña anṛjuḥ madhusūdana
28. madhusūdana ṛjuprājña ca ayam anṛjuḥ tatra api
me putrān bhrātṛbhiḥ saha katham na virodhayet
28. O Madhusūdana, O you of straightforward wisdom, how will this crooked one (Duryodhana) not cause conflict between my sons and their brothers even in that situation?
