संजय उवाच ।
त्रिभागमात्रशेषायां रात्र्यां युद्धमवर्तत ।
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च संहृष्टानां विशां पते ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tribhāgamātraśeṣāyāṁ rātryāṁ yuddhamavartata ,
kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca saṁhṛṣṭānāṁ viśāṁ pate.

1. sañjayaḥ uvāca he viśām pate,
rātryām tribhāgamātraśeṣāyām (satyām) saṃhṛṣṭānām kurūṇām pāṇḍavānām ca yuddham avartata.
1. Sanjaya said: O lord of men, the battle continued between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas, who were greatly eager, when only one-third of the night remained.
अथ चन्द्रप्रभां मुष्णन्नादित्यस्य पुरःसरः ।
अरुणोऽभ्युदयां चक्रे ताम्रीकुर्वन्निवाम्बरम् ॥२॥
2. atha candraprabhāṁ muṣṇannādityasya puraḥsaraḥ ,
aruṇo'bhyudayāṁ cakre tāmrīkurvannivāmbaram.

2. Then, Aruna, the forerunner of the sun, dimming the moon's light, made his ascent, as if coloring the sky reddish.
ततो द्वैधीकृते सैन्ये द्रोणः सोमकपाण्डवान् ।
अभ्यद्रवत्सपाञ्चालान्दुर्योधनपुरोगमः ॥३॥
3. tato dvaidhīkṛte sainye droṇaḥ somakapāṇḍavān ,
abhyadravatsapāñcālānduryodhanapurogamaḥ.

3. Then, after the army had been split in two, Drona, with Duryodhana at the forefront, attacked the Somakas and the Pandavas, along with the Panchalas.
द्वैधीभूतान्कुरून्दृष्ट्वा माधवोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत् ।
सपत्नान्सव्यतः कुर्मि सव्यसाचिन्निमान्कुरून् ॥४॥
4. dvaidhībhūtānkurūndṛṣṭvā mādhavo'rjunamabravīt ,
sapatnānsavyataḥ kurmi savyasācinnimānkurūn.

"
4. Having seen the Kurus split into two, Madhava (Krishna) said to Arjuna: "O Savyasachin, I will make these Kurus, our adversaries, positioned to your left."
स माधवमनुज्ञाय कुरुष्वेति धनंजयः ।
द्रोणकर्णौ महेष्वासौ सव्यतः पर्यवर्तत ॥५॥
5. sa mādhavamanujñāya kuruṣveti dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
droṇakarṇau maheṣvāsau savyataḥ paryavartata.

droṇakarṇau maheṣvāsau savyataḥ paryavartata
5. saḥ dhanañjayaḥ mādhavam "kuruṣva" iti anujñāya

5. He, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), having given permission to Madhava (Krishna) with the words 'Do it!', then turned, placing Drona and Karna, those great archers, to his left.
अभिप्रायं तु कृष्णस्य ज्ञात्वा परपुरंजयः ।
आजिशीर्षगतं दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनं समासदत् ॥६॥
6. abhiprāyaṁ tu kṛṣṇasya jñātvā parapuraṁjayaḥ ,
ājiśīrṣagataṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenaṁ samāsadat.

6. Understanding Krishna's intention, Arjuna, the conqueror of enemy cities, approached Bhimasena after seeing him at the forefront of the battle.
भीम उवाच ।
अर्जुनार्जुन बीभत्सो शृणु मे तत्त्वतो वचः ।
यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ॥७॥
7. bhīma uvāca ,
arjunārjuna bībhatso śṛṇu me tattvato vacaḥ ,
yadarthaṁ kṣatriyā sūte tasya kālo'yamāgataḥ.
7. bhīma uvāca arjuna arjuna bībhatso śṛṇu me tattvataḥ
vacaḥ yadartham kṣatriyā sūte tasya kālaḥ ayam āgataḥ

7. Bhima spoke: "Arjuna, Arjuna, O Hater of Repulsive Deeds (bībhatsu)! Listen carefully to my words. The time has now come for that very purpose for which a kshatriya woman gives birth."
अस्मिंश्चेदागते काले श्रेयो न प्रतिपत्स्यसे ।
असंभावितरूपः सन्नानृशंस्यं करिष्यसि ॥८॥
8. asmiṁścedāgate kāle śreyo na pratipatsyase ,
asaṁbhāvitarūpaḥ sannānṛśaṁsyaṁ kariṣyasi.
8. asmin cet āgate kāle śreyaḥ na pratipatsyase
asaṃbhāvitarūpaḥ san ānṛśaṃsyam kariṣyasi
8. cet asmin āgate kāle śreyaḥ na pratipatsyase
asaṃbhāvitarūpaḥ san ānṛśaṃsyam kariṣyasi
8. If, when this crucial time has arrived, you do not strive for what is beneficial, then, behaving in an unworthy manner, you will practice non-cruelty (ānṛśaṃsya) instead of fulfilling your duty.
सत्यश्रीधर्मयशसां वीर्येणानृण्यमाप्नुहि ।
भिन्ध्यनीकं युधां श्रेष्ठ सव्यसाचिन्निमान्कुरु ॥९॥
9. satyaśrīdharmayaśasāṁ vīryeṇānṛṇyamāpnuhi ,
bhindhyanīkaṁ yudhāṁ śreṣṭha savyasācinnimānkuru.
9. satya śrī dharma yaśasām vīryeṇa ānṛṇyam āpnuhi
bhindhi anīkam yudhām śreṣṭha savyasācin imān kuru
9. yudhām śreṣṭha savyasācin satya śrī dharma yaśasām
ānṛṇyam vīryeṇa āpnuhi anīkam bhindhi imān kuru
9. O best among warriors, O Savyasachin, attain freedom from your debt to truth, glory, natural law (dharma), and fame through your valor! Break through this army and conquer these foes!
संजय उवाच ।
स सव्यसाची भीमेन चोदितः केशवेन च ।
कर्णद्रोणावतिक्रम्य समन्तात्पर्यवारयत् ॥१०॥
10. saṁjaya uvāca ,
sa savyasācī bhīmena coditaḥ keśavena ca ,
karṇadroṇāvatikramya samantātparyavārayat.
10. saṃjaya uvāca saḥ savyasācī bhīmena coditaḥ keśavena
ca karṇadroṇau atikramya samantāt paryavārayat
10. saṃjaya uvāca saḥ savyasācī bhīmena ca keśavena coditaḥ karṇadroṇau atikramya samantāt paryavārayat.
10. Saṃjaya said: That ambidextrous warrior (Arjuna), impelled by Bhīma and Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), bypassed Karṇa and Droṇa and surrounded them completely.
तमाजिशीर्षमायान्तं दहन्तं क्षत्रियर्षभान् ।
पराक्रान्तं पराक्रम्य यतन्तः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
नाशक्नुवन्वारयितुं वर्धमानमिवानलम् ॥११॥
11. tamājiśīrṣamāyāntaṁ dahantaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhān ,
parākrāntaṁ parākramya yatantaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
nāśaknuvanvārayituṁ vardhamānamivānalam.
11. tam ājiśīrṣam āyāntaṃ dahantaṃ
kṣatriyarṣabhān parākrāntam parākramya
yatantaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ na aśaknuvan
vārayituṃ vardhamānam iva analam
11. yatantaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ tam ājiśīrṣam āyāntaṃ kṣatriyarṣabhān dahantaṃ parākrāntam parākramya vardhamānam analam iva vārayituṃ na aśaknuvan.
11. The leading kṣatriyas, despite their valiant efforts and display of prowess, were unable to stop him as he advanced to the forefront of the battle, consuming (destroying) other eminent kṣatriyas, just as one cannot stop a growing fire.
अथ दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
अभ्यवर्षञ्शरव्रातैः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनंजयम् ॥१२॥
12. atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
abhyavarṣañśaravrātaiḥ kuntīputraṁ dhanaṁjayam.
12. atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
abhyavarṣan śaravrātāiḥ kuntīputraṃ dhanañjayam
12. atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ śaravrātāiḥ kuntīputraṃ dhanañjayam abhyavarṣan.
12. Then Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni, son of Subala, showered volleys of arrows upon Kuntī's son, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
तेषामस्त्राणि सर्वेषामुत्तमास्त्रविदां वरः ।
कदर्थीकृत्य राजेन्द्र शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥१३॥
13. teṣāmastrāṇi sarveṣāmuttamāstravidāṁ varaḥ ,
kadarthīkṛtya rājendra śaravarṣairavākirat.
13. teṣām astrāṇi sarveṣām uttamāstravidām varaḥ
kadarthīkṛtya rājendra śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat
13. rāja-indra,
uttamāstravidām varaḥ teṣām sarveṣām astrāṇi kadarthīkṛtya śaravarṣaiḥ avākirat.
13. O king, the foremost among those skilled in excellent weapons (Arjuna), having easily neutralized all their weapons, showered them with torrents of arrows.
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य लघुहस्तो धनंजयः ।
सर्वानविध्यन्निशितैर्दशभिर्दशभिः शरैः ॥१४॥
14. astrairastrāṇi saṁvārya laghuhasto dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
sarvānavidhyanniśitairdaśabhirdaśabhiḥ śaraiḥ.
14. astraiḥ astrāṇi saṃvārya laghuhastaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
sarvān avidhyan niśitaiḥ daśabhiḥ daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ
14. dhanaṃjayaḥ laghuhastaḥ astraiḥ astrāṇi saṃvārya
niśitaiḥ daśabhiḥ daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ sarvān avidhyan
14. Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), swift-handed, having countered [their] weapons with [his own] weapons, struck all of them with ten sharp arrows each.
उद्धूता रजसो वृष्टिः शरवृष्टिस्तथैव च ।
तमश्च घोरं शब्दश्च तदा समभवन्महान् ॥१५॥
15. uddhūtā rajaso vṛṣṭiḥ śaravṛṣṭistathaiva ca ,
tamaśca ghoraṁ śabdaśca tadā samabhavanmahān.
15. uddhūtā rajaso vṛṣṭiḥ śaravṛṣṭiḥ tathā eva ca
tamaḥ ca ghoram śabdaḥ ca tadā samabhavat mahān
15. rajaso vṛṣṭiḥ uddhūtā tathā eva ca śaravṛṣṭiḥ
tadā ca ghoram tamaḥ ca mahān śabdaḥ samabhavat
15. A storm of dust was raised, and likewise a shower of arrows. And at that time, a terrible darkness and a great sound arose.
न द्यौर्न भूमिर्न दिशः प्राज्ञायन्त तथा गते ।
सैन्येन रजसा मूढं सर्वमन्धमिवाभवत् ॥१६॥
16. na dyaurna bhūmirna diśaḥ prājñāyanta tathā gate ,
sainyena rajasā mūḍhaṁ sarvamandhamivābhavat.
16. na dyauḥ na bhūmiḥ na diśaḥ prājñāyanta tathā gate
sainyena rajasā mūḍham sarvam andham iva abhavat
16. tathā gate na dyauḥ na bhūmiḥ na diśaḥ prājñāyanta
sainyena rajasā mūḍham sarvam andham iva abhavat
16. Neither the sky, nor the earth, nor the directions could be discerned when the situation had thus developed. Everything became as if blind, completely obscured by the army's dust.
नैव ते न वयं राजन्प्रज्ञासिष्म परस्परम् ।
उद्देशेन हि तेन स्म समयुध्यन्त पार्थिवाः ॥१७॥
17. naiva te na vayaṁ rājanprajñāsiṣma parasparam ,
uddeśena hi tena sma samayudhyanta pārthivāḥ.
17. na eva te na vayam rājan prājñāsiṣma parasparam
uddeśena hi tena sma samayudhyanta pārthivāḥ

17. O King, neither they nor we could discern each other. Indeed, the kings (pārthivāḥ) fought only by [blind] aim.
विरथा रथिनो राजन्समासाद्य परस्परम् ।
केशेषु समसज्जन्त कवचेषु भुजेषु च ॥१८॥
18. virathā rathino rājansamāsādya parasparam ,
keśeṣu samasajjanta kavaceṣu bhujeṣu ca.
18. virathāḥ rathinaḥ rājan samāsādya parasparam
keśeṣu samasañjanta kavaceṣu bhūjeṣu ca
18. rājan virathāḥ rathinaḥ parasparam samāsādya

18. O King, the charioteers, having lost their chariots and met each other, became entangled by their hair, armors, and arms.
हताश्वा हतसूताश्च निश्चेष्टा रथिनस्तदा ।
जीवन्त इव तत्र स्म व्यदृश्यन्त भयार्दिताः ॥१९॥
19. hatāśvā hatasūtāśca niśceṣṭā rathinastadā ,
jīvanta iva tatra sma vyadṛśyanta bhayārditāḥ.
19. hatāśvāḥ hatasūtāḥ ca niśceṣṭāḥ rathinaḥ tadā
jīvantaḥ iva tatra sma vyadṛśyanta bhayārditāḥ
19. tadā hatāśvāḥ hatasūtāḥ ca niśceṣṭāḥ bhayārditāḥ
rathinaḥ tatra jīvantaḥ iva vyadṛśyanta sma
19. Then, those charioteers, whose horses and drivers had been killed and who were now motionless, were seen there appearing as if alive, but tormented by fear.
हतान्गजान्समाश्लिष्य पर्वतानिव वाजिनः ।
गतसत्त्वा व्यदृश्यन्त तथैव सह सादिभिः ॥२०॥
20. hatāngajānsamāśliṣya parvatāniva vājinaḥ ,
gatasattvā vyadṛśyanta tathaiva saha sādibhiḥ.
20. hatān gajān samāśliṣya parvatān iva vājinaḥ
gatasattvāḥ vyadṛśyanta tathaiva saha sādibhiḥ
20. vājinaḥ hatān gajān parvatān iva samāśliṣya
gatasattvāḥ vyadṛśyanta tathaiva saha sādibhiḥ
20. The horses, clinging to the slain elephants as if they were mountains, were seen lifeless. Likewise, their riders were also seen lifeless.
ततस्त्वभ्यवसृत्यैव संग्रामादुत्तरां दिशम् ।
अतिष्ठदाहवे द्रोणो विधूम इव पावकः ॥२१॥
21. tatastvabhyavasṛtyaiva saṁgrāmāduttarāṁ diśam ,
atiṣṭhadāhave droṇo vidhūma iva pāvakaḥ.
21. tataḥ tu abhyavasṛtya eva saṅgrāmāt uttarām
diśam atiṣṭhat āhave droṇaḥ vidhūmaḥ iva pāvakaḥ
21. tataḥ tu droṇaḥ saṅgrāmāt uttarām diśam abhyavasṛtya
eva āhave vidhūmaḥ pāvakaḥ iva atiṣṭhat
21. Then, having indeed retreated from the battle to the northern direction, Drona stood firm in combat like a smokeless fire.
तमाजिशीर्षादेकान्तमपक्रान्तं निशाम्य तु ।
समकम्पन्त सैन्यानि पाण्डवानां विशां पते ॥२२॥
22. tamājiśīrṣādekāntamapakrāntaṁ niśāmya tu ,
samakampanta sainyāni pāṇḍavānāṁ viśāṁ pate.
22. tam ājiśīrṣāt ekāntam apakrāntam niśāmya tu
samakampanta sainyāni pāṇḍavānām viśām pate

22. O lord of men, when the Pandava armies saw him withdraw from the battle's forefront and move to one side, they trembled.

द्रोणं दृष्ट्वारयस्त्रेसुश्चेलुर्मम्लुश्च मारिष ॥२३॥
23. bhrājamānaṁ śriyā yuktaṁ jvalantamiva tejasā ,
droṇaṁ dṛṣṭvārayastresuścelurmamluśca māriṣa.

23. O venerable one, seeing Drona resplendent, endowed with glory and blazing as if with his own energy, the enemies trembled, scattered, and became disheartened.
आह्वयन्तं परानीकं प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम् ।
नैनं शशंसिरे जेतुं दानवा वासवं यथा ॥२४॥
24. āhvayantaṁ parānīkaṁ prabhinnamiva vāraṇam ,
nainaṁ śaśaṁsire jetuṁ dānavā vāsavaṁ yathā.

24. They did not consider him conquerable, just as the Danavas would not think Indra (Vāsava) could be conquered, when he was challenging the enemy army like an elephant in rut (prabhinna vāraṇam).
केचिदासन्निरुत्साहाः केचित्क्रुद्धा मनस्विनः ।
विस्मिताश्चाभवन्केचित्केचिदासन्नमर्षिताः ॥२५॥
25. kecidāsannirutsāhāḥ kecitkruddhā manasvinaḥ ,
vismitāścābhavankecitkecidāsannamarṣitāḥ.

25. Some were without enthusiasm, some high-minded ones were enraged, others became astonished, and still others were indignant.
हस्तैर्हस्ताग्रमपरे प्रत्यपिंषन्नराधिपाः ।
अपरे दशनैरोष्ठानदशन्क्रोधमूर्छिताः ॥२६॥
26. hastairhastāgramapare pratyapiṁṣannarādhipāḥ ,
apare daśanairoṣṭhānadaśankrodhamūrchitāḥ.

26. Some kings pressed their palms together with their hands, while others, overcome with rage, bit their lips with their teeth.
व्याक्षिपन्नायुधानन्ये ममृदुश्चापरे भुजान् ।
अन्ये चान्वपतन्द्रोणं त्यक्तात्मानो महौजसः ॥२७॥
27. vyākṣipannāyudhānanye mamṛduścāpare bhujān ,
anye cānvapatandroṇaṁ tyaktātmāno mahaujasaḥ.
27. vyākṣipan āyudhān anye mamṛduḥ ca apare bhujān
anye ca anvapatan droṇam tyaktātmānaḥ mahaujasaḥ
27. anye āyudhān vyākṣipan ca apare bhujān mamṛduḥ

27. Some others hurled their weapons, while still others crushed arms. And yet others, with great energy, abandoning all concern for their lives (ātman), fell upon Droṇa.
पाञ्चालास्तु विशेषेण द्रोणसायकपीडिताः ।
समसज्जन्त राजेन्द्र समरे भृशवेदनाः ॥२८॥
28. pāñcālāstu viśeṣeṇa droṇasāyakapīḍitāḥ ,
samasajjanta rājendra samare bhṛśavedanāḥ.

28. But the Pañcālas, O King, especially those tormented by Droṇa's arrows and suffering great pain, engaged themselves in the battle.
ततो विराटद्रुपदौ द्रोणं प्रतिययू रणे ।
तथा चरन्तं संग्रामे भृशं समरदुर्जयम् ॥२९॥
29. tato virāṭadrupadau droṇaṁ pratiyayū raṇe ,
tathā carantaṁ saṁgrāme bhṛśaṁ samaradurjayam.

tathā saṅgrāme carantam bhṛśam samaradurjayam
29. Then Virāṭa and Drupada advanced against Droṇa in the battle, who was fighting in the conflict with such intensity, making him extremely difficult to overcome.
द्रुपदस्य ततः पौत्रास्त्रय एव विशां पते ।
चेदयश्च महेष्वासा द्रोणमेवाभ्ययुर्युधि ॥३०॥
30. drupadasya tataḥ pautrāstraya eva viśāṁ pate ,
cedayaśca maheṣvāsā droṇamevābhyayuryudhi.

30. Then, O ruler of the people, only three grandsons of Drupada, along with the great archer Chedis, truly advanced against Drona in battle.
तेषां द्रुपदपौत्राणां त्रयाणां निशितैः शरैः ।
त्रिभिर्द्रोणोऽहरत्प्राणांस्ते हता न्यपतन्भुवि ॥३१॥
31. teṣāṁ drupadapautrāṇāṁ trayāṇāṁ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
tribhirdroṇo'haratprāṇāṁste hatā nyapatanbhuvi.

31. Drona took the lives of those three grandsons of Drupada with three sharp arrows. Struck down, they fell upon the earth.
ततो द्रोणोऽजयद्युद्धे चेदिकेकयसृञ्जयान् ।
मत्स्यांश्चैवाजयत्सर्वान्भारद्वाजो महारथः ॥३२॥
32. tato droṇo'jayadyuddhe cedikekayasṛñjayān ,
matsyāṁścaivājayatsarvānbhāradvājo mahārathaḥ.
32. tataḥ droṇaḥ ajayat yuddhe cedikekayasṛñjayān
matsyān ca eva ajayat sarvān bhāradvājaḥ mahārathaḥ

32. Then Drona conquered the Chedis, Kekayas, and Sṛñjayas in battle. The great warrior (mahāratha) Bhāradvāja (Drona) also conquered all the Matsyas.
ततस्तु द्रुपदः क्रोधाच्छरवर्षमवाकिरत् ।
द्रोणं प्रति महाराज विराटश्चैव संयुगे ॥३३॥
33. tatastu drupadaḥ krodhāccharavarṣamavākirat ,
droṇaṁ prati mahārāja virāṭaścaiva saṁyuge.
33. tataḥ tu drupadaḥ krodhāt śaravarṣam avākirat
droṇam prati mahārāja virāṭaḥ ca eva saṃyuge

33. Then, O great king, Drupada, out of anger, showered a rain of arrows upon Drona. And Virāṭa also did the same in battle.
ततो द्रोणः सुपीताभ्यां भल्लाभ्यामरिमर्दनः ।
द्रुपदं च विराटं च प्रैषीद्वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥३४॥
34. tato droṇaḥ supītābhyāṁ bhallābhyāmarimardanaḥ ,
drupadaṁ ca virāṭaṁ ca praiṣīdvaivasvatakṣayam.

34. Then Droṇa, the destroyer of enemies, with two golden and well-sharpened javelins, sent Drupada and Virāṭa to the abode of Yama (vaivasvatakṣaya), consigning them to death.
हते विराटे द्रुपदे केकयेषु तथैव च ।
तथैव चेदिमत्स्येषु पाञ्चालेषु तथैव च ।
हतेषु त्रिषु वीरेषु द्रुपदस्य च नप्तृषु ॥३५॥
35. hate virāṭe drupade kekayeṣu tathaiva ca ,
tathaiva cedimatsyeṣu pāñcāleṣu tathaiva ca ,
hateṣu triṣu vīreṣu drupadasya ca naptṛṣu.

35. With Virāṭa slain, and Drupada, and likewise among the Kekayas, and similarly among the Cedis and Matsyas, and also among the Pañcālas; and when the three heroes, Drupada's grandsons, were slain.
द्रोणस्य कर्म तद्दृष्ट्वा कोपदुःखसमन्वितः ।
शशाप रथिनां मध्ये धृष्टद्युम्नो महामनाः ॥३६॥
36. droṇasya karma taddṛṣṭvā kopaduḥkhasamanvitaḥ ,
śaśāpa rathināṁ madhye dhṛṣṭadyumno mahāmanāḥ.

36. Seeing that deed of Droṇa, the great-souled Dhṛṣṭadyumna, overcome with anger and grief, uttered a curse amidst the charioteers.
इष्टापूर्तात्तथा क्षात्राद्ब्राह्मण्याच्च स नश्यतु ।
द्रोणो यस्याद्य मुच्येत यो वा द्रोणात्पराङ्मुखः ॥३७॥
37. iṣṭāpūrtāttathā kṣātrādbrāhmaṇyācca sa naśyatu ,
droṇo yasyādya mucyeta yo vā droṇātparāṅmukhaḥ.
37. iṣṭāpūrtāt tathā kṣātrāt brāhmaṇyāt ca saḥ naśyatu
droṇaḥ yasya adya mucyeta yaḥ vā droṇāt parāṅmukhaḥ
37. yasya saḥ adya droṇaḥ mucyeta,
vā yaḥ droṇāt parāṅmukhaḥ,
[saḥ] iṣṭāpūrtāt tathā kṣātrāt ca brāhmaṇyāt naśyatu
37. May he perish from his merits acquired through sacrifices and good works (iṣṭāpūrta), and from his warrior's intrinsic nature (kṣātra), and from his brahmanical intrinsic nature (brāhmaṇya) - whoever would release Droṇa today, or whoever turns his back on Droṇa.
इति तेषां प्रतिश्रुत्य मध्ये सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
आयाद्द्रोणं सहानीकः पाञ्चाल्यः परवीरहा ।
पाञ्चालास्त्वेकतो द्रोणमभ्यघ्नन्पाण्डवान्यतः ॥३८॥
38. iti teṣāṁ pratiśrutya madhye sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
āyāddroṇaṁ sahānīkaḥ pāñcālyaḥ paravīrahā ,
pāñcālāstvekato droṇamabhyaghnanpāṇḍavānyataḥ.

pāñcālyaḥ paravīrahā pāñcālāḥ tu ekataḥ

38. Having thus promised them amidst all the archers, the Panchala prince, the destroyer of enemy heroes, Dhrishtadyumna, arrived with his army to confront Drona. However, the Panchalas attacked Drona from one side, and the Pandavas from another.
दुर्योधनश्च कर्णश्च शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
सोदर्याश्च यथा मुख्यास्तेऽरक्षन्द्रोणमाहवे ॥३९॥
39. duryodhanaśca karṇaśca śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
sodaryāśca yathā mukhyāste'rakṣandroṇamāhave.
39. duryodhanaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
sodaryāḥ ca yathā mukhyāḥ te arakṣan droṇam āhave

39. Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni, the son of Subala, along with his chief brothers and other prominent warriors, protected Drona in battle.
रक्ष्यमाणं तथा द्रोणं समरे तैर्महात्मभिः ।
यतमानापि पाञ्चाला न शेकुः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥४०॥
40. rakṣyamāṇaṁ tathā droṇaṁ samare tairmahātmabhiḥ ,
yatamānāpi pāñcālā na śekuḥ prativīkṣitum.
40. rakṣyamāṇam tathā droṇam samare taiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
yatamānā api pāñcālāḥ na śekuḥ prativīkṣitum
40. tathā taiḥ mahātmabhiḥ samare rakṣyamāṇam droṇam,
yatamānāḥ api pāñcālāḥ prativīkṣitum na śekuḥ
40. Thus, even though the Panchalas strove, they were unable to even face Drona, who was being protected in battle by those great-souled warriors.
तत्राक्रुध्यद्भीमसेनो धृष्टद्युम्नस्य मारिष ।
स एनं वाग्भिरुग्राभिस्ततक्ष पुरुषर्षभ ॥४१॥
41. tatrākrudhyadbhīmaseno dhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣa ,
sa enaṁ vāgbhirugrābhistatakṣa puruṣarṣabha.
41. tatra akrudhyat bhīmasenaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya māriṣa
sa enam vāgbhiḥ ugrābhiḥ tatakṣa puruṣarṣabha
41. māriṣa,
tatra bhīmasenaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya akrudhyat.
saḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ enam ugrābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ tatakṣa.
41. There, Bhimasena became angry with Dhrishtadyumna, O respected sir. That best of men (Bhimasena) then rebuked him with fierce words.
द्रुपदस्य कुले जातः सर्वास्त्रेष्वस्त्रवित्तमः ।
कः क्षत्रियो मन्यमानः प्रेक्षेतारिमवस्थितम् ॥४२॥
42. drupadasya kule jātaḥ sarvāstreṣvastravittamaḥ ,
kaḥ kṣatriyo manyamānaḥ prekṣetārimavasthitam.

42. Who is that warrior (kṣatriya), born in the lineage of Drupada, most skilled in all weapons, who, considering himself a true warrior, would merely watch an enemy standing before him?
पितृपुत्रवधं प्राप्य पुमान्कः परिहापयेत् ।
विशेषतस्तु शपथं शपित्वा राजसंसदि ॥४३॥
43. pitṛputravadhaṁ prāpya pumānkaḥ parihāpayet ,
viśeṣatastu śapathaṁ śapitvā rājasaṁsadi.

43. What man, having endured the killing of a father and a son, would relinquish (his resolve)? Especially after having sworn an oath in the royal assembly.
एष वैश्वानर इव समिद्धः स्वेन तेजसा ।
शरचापेन्धनो द्रोणः क्षत्रं दहति तेजसा ॥४४॥
44. eṣa vaiśvānara iva samiddhaḥ svena tejasā ,
śaracāpendhano droṇaḥ kṣatraṁ dahati tejasā.
44. eṣa vaiśvānara iva samiddhaḥ svena tejasā
śaracāpendhanaḥ droṇaḥ kṣatram dahati tejasā
44. eṣa droṇaḥ svena tejasā samiddhaḥ vaiśvānara

44. This Droṇa is like Vaiśvānara (the universal fire), blazing with his own might. With arrows and bow as his fuel, he consumes the warrior class (kṣatra) with his fiery power.
पुरा करोति निःशेषां पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ।
स्थिताः पश्यत मे कर्म द्रोणमेव व्रजाम्यहम् ॥४५॥
45. purā karoti niḥśeṣāṁ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm ,
sthitāḥ paśyata me karma droṇameva vrajāmyaham.

sthitāḥ paśyata me karma droṇam eva vrajāmi aham
45. purā saḥ pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm niḥśeṣām karoti,
(he) sthitāḥ (janāḥ) me karma paśyata aham droṇam eva vrajāmi
45. Before he completely annihilates the army of the Pandavas, stand and witness my deed (karma)! I myself will go towards Droṇa.
इत्युक्त्वा प्राविशत्क्रुद्धो द्रोणानीकं वृकोदरः ।
दृढैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैर्द्रावयंस्तव वाहिनीम् ॥४६॥
46. ityuktvā prāviśatkruddho droṇānīkaṁ vṛkodaraḥ ,
dṛḍhaiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairdrāvayaṁstava vāhinīm.
46. iti uktvā prāviśat kruddhaḥ droṇānīkam vṛkodaraḥ
dṛḍhaiḥ pūrṇāyata-utsṛṣṭaiḥ drāvayan tava vāhinīm

46. Having spoken thus, the enraged Vṛkodara (Bhīma) entered Droṇa's army, routing your forces with firmly released arrows shot from a fully drawn bow.
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि पाञ्चाल्यः प्रविश्य महतीं चमूम् ।
आससाद रणे द्रोणं तदासीत्तुमुलं महत् ॥४७॥
47. dhṛṣṭadyumno'pi pāñcālyaḥ praviśya mahatīṁ camūm ,
āsasāda raṇe droṇaṁ tadāsīttumulaṁ mahat.
47. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ api pāñcālyaḥ praviśya mahatīm
camūm āsasāda raṇe droṇam tadā āsīt tumulam mahat
47. api pāñcālyaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ mahatīm camūm praviśya

47. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the Pāñcālya prince, also entered the great army and confronted Droṇa in battle. Thereupon, a mighty and tumultuous conflict ensued.
नैव नस्तादृशं युद्धं दृष्टपूर्वं न च श्रुतम् ।
यथा सूर्योदये राजन्समुत्पिञ्जोऽभवन्महान् ॥४८॥
48. naiva nastādṛśaṁ yuddhaṁ dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ na ca śrutam ,
yathā sūryodaye rājansamutpiñjo'bhavanmahān.
48. na eva naḥ tādṛśam yuddham dṛṣṭa-pūrvam na ca śrutam
yathā sūrya-udaye rājan sam-utpiñjaḥ abhavat mahān
48. rājan,
na eva naḥ tādṛśam yuddham dṛṣṭa-pūrvam ca na śrutam,
yathā sūrya-udaye mahān sam-utpiñjaḥ abhavat
48. O King, neither have we ever seen nor heard of such a battle before, like the tremendous uproar that arose at sunrise.
संसक्तानि व्यदृश्यन्त रथवृन्दानि मारिष ।
हतानि च विकीर्णानि शरीराणि शरीरिणाम् ॥४९॥
49. saṁsaktāni vyadṛśyanta rathavṛndāni māriṣa ,
hatāni ca vikīrṇāni śarīrāṇi śarīriṇām.
49. saṃsaktāni vyadṛśyanta ratha-vṛndāni māriṣa
hatāni ca vikīrṇāni śarīrāṇi śarīriṇām
49. māriṣa saṃsaktāni ratha-vṛndāni vyadṛśyanta

49. O respected one, entangled groups of chariots were observed, and the slain and scattered bodies of warriors (śarīriṇām) lay everywhere.
केचिदन्यत्र गच्छन्तः पथि चान्यैरुपद्रुताः ।
विमुखाः पृष्ठतश्चान्ये ताड्यन्ते पार्श्वतोऽपरे ॥५०॥
50. kecidanyatra gacchantaḥ pathi cānyairupadrutāḥ ,
vimukhāḥ pṛṣṭhataścānye tāḍyante pārśvato'pare.
50. kecit anyatra gacchantāḥ pathi ca anyaiḥ upadrutāḥ
vimukhāḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ ca anye tāḍyante pārśvataḥ apare
50. kecit anyatra gacchantāḥ pathi ca anyaiḥ upadrutāḥ
ca anye vimukhāḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ tāḍyante apare pārśvataḥ
50. Some, trying to go elsewhere, were harassed by others on the path. And others, turning their backs in retreat, were struck from behind. Still others were being struck from the side.
तथा संसक्तयुद्धं तदभवद्भृशदारुणम् ।
अथ संध्यागतः सूर्यः क्षणेन समपद्यत ॥५१॥
51. tathā saṁsaktayuddhaṁ tadabhavadbhṛśadāruṇam ,
atha saṁdhyāgataḥ sūryaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata.
51. tathā saṃsaktayuddham tat abhavat bhṛśadāruṇam
atha sandhyāgataḥ sūryaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata
51. tathā tat saṃsaktayuddham bhṛśadāruṇam abhavat

51. Thus, that joined battle became exceedingly terrible. Then, in an instant, the sun reached its twilight setting.
