संजय उवाच ।
कर्णस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा केशवः परवीरहा ।
उवाच प्रहसन्वाक्यं स्मितपूर्वमिदं तदा ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
karṇasya vacanaṁ śrutvā keśavaḥ paravīrahā ,
uvāca prahasanvākyaṁ smitapūrvamidaṁ tadā.

1. Sañjaya said: Having heard Karṇa's words, Keśava, the slayer of hostile heroes, then, smiling gently (prahasan), spoke these words that were preceded by a smile (smitapūrvam).
अपि त्वां न तपेत्कर्ण राज्यलाभोपपादना ।
मया दत्तां हि पृथिवीं न प्रशासितुमिच्छसि ॥२॥
2. api tvāṁ na tapetkarṇa rājyalābhopapādanā ,
mayā dattāṁ hi pṛthivīṁ na praśāsitumicchasi.

mayā dattām hi pṛthivīm na praśāsitum icchasi

2. Karna, will the prospect of acquiring a kingdom not trouble you, since you certainly do not wish to rule the earth bestowed by me?
ध्रुवो जयः पाण्डवानामितीदं न संशयः कश्चन विद्यतेऽत्र ।
जयध्वजो दृश्यते पाण्डवस्य समुच्छ्रितो वानरराज उग्रः ॥३॥
3. dhruvo jayaḥ pāṇḍavānāmitīdaṁ; na saṁśayaḥ kaścana vidyate'tra ,
jayadhvajo dṛśyate pāṇḍavasya; samucchrito vānararāja ugraḥ.
3. dhruvaḥ jayaḥ pāṇḍavānām iti idam
na saṃśayaḥ kaścana vidyate atra
jaya-dhvajaḥ dṛśyate pāṇḍavasya
samucchritaḥ vānararājaḥ ugraḥ
3. atra pāṇḍavānām jayaḥ dhruvaḥ,
iti idam kaścana saṃśayaḥ na vidyate.
pāṇḍavasya ugraḥ vānararājaḥ jayadhvajaḥ samucchritaḥ dṛśyate.
3. The victory of the Pāṇḍavas is certain; there is no doubt whatsoever about this here. The fierce monkey-king (vānara-rāja), the banner of victory (jaya-dhvaja) of the Pāṇḍava, is seen raised high.
दिव्या माया विहिता भौवनेन समुच्छ्रिता इन्द्रकेतुप्रकाशा ।
दिव्यानि भूतानि भयावहानि दृश्यन्ति चैवात्र भयानकानि ॥४॥
4. divyā māyā vihitā bhauvanena; samucchritā indraketuprakāśā ,
divyāni bhūtāni bhayāvahāni; dṛśyanti caivātra bhayānakāni.
4. divyā māyā vihitā bhauvanena samucchritā indraketu-prakāśā
divyāni bhūtāni bhayāvahāni dṛśyanti ca eva atra bhayānakāni
4. bhauvanena vihitā divyā māyā indraketu-prakāśā samucchritā (asti).
ca eva atra divyāni bhayāvahāni bhayānakāni bhūtāni dṛśyanti.
4. A divine illusion (māyā), created by the son of Bhūvana (Viśvakarman), is raised high, shining like Indra's banner (indra-ketu). And indeed, here, divine, fear-inducing beings (bhūta) and terrifying sights are seen.
न सज्जते शैलवनस्पतिभ्य ऊर्ध्वं तिर्यग्योजनमात्ररूपः ।
श्रीमान्ध्वजः कर्ण धनंजयस्य समुच्छ्रितः पावकतुल्यरूपः ॥५॥
5. na sajjate śailavanaspatibhya; ūrdhvaṁ tiryagyojanamātrarūpaḥ ,
śrīmāndhvajaḥ karṇa dhanaṁjayasya; samucchritaḥ pāvakatulyarūpaḥ.
5. na sajjate śailavanaspati-bhyaḥ
ūrdhvam tiryak yojana-mātra-rūpaḥ
śrīmān dhvajaḥ karṇa dhanañjayasya
samucchritaḥ pāvakatulya-rūpaḥ
5. karṇa,
samucchritaḥ śrīmān dhanañjayasya dhvajaḥ pāvakatulya-rūpaḥ (asti).
(saḥ) yojanamātrarūpaḥ (san) ūrdhvam tiryak (ca) śailavanaspati-bhyaḥ na sajjate.
5. Karna, the glorious banner of Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), raised high, appears like fire. It measures a yojana (yojana) in extent both upwards and sideways, yet it does not get entangled with mountains or trees.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि संग्रामे श्वेताश्वं कृष्णसारथिम् ।
ऐन्द्रमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणमुभे चैवाग्निमारुते ॥६॥
6. yadā drakṣyasi saṁgrāme śvetāśvaṁ kṛṣṇasārathim ,
aindramastraṁ vikurvāṇamubhe caivāgnimārute.
6. yādā drakṣyasi saṅgrāme śvetāśvaṃ kṛṣṇasārathim
aindram astraṃ vikurvāṇam ubhe ca eva agnimārute
6. yādā saṅgrāme śvetāśvaṃ kṛṣṇasārathim aindram
astraṃ ca ubhe eva agnimārute vikurvāṇam drakṣyasi
6. When you behold in battle Arjuna, the white-horsed (śvetāśva) warrior with Kṛṣṇa as his charioteer, displaying both Indra's weapon and the weapons of fire and wind (agnimārute).
गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः ।
न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च ॥७॥
7. gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣaṁ visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ ,
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtaṁ dvāparaṁ na ca.
7. gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣam visphūrjitam iva aśaneḥ
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtam dvāparam na ca
7. gāṇḍīvasya nirghoṣam ca aśaneḥ iva visphūrjitam [drakṣyasi - implied] tadā tretā na bhavitā,
kṛtam na [bhavitā],
dvāparam na ca [bhavitā]
7. And when you hear the roar of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow), like the crash of a thunderbolt, then there will be no Tretā Yuga, no Kṛta Yuga, and no Dvāpara Yuga (meaning it will be a unique and unprecedented time).
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि संग्रामे कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
जपहोमसमायुक्तं स्वां रक्षन्तं महाचमूम् ॥८॥
8. yadā drakṣyasi saṁgrāme kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
japahomasamāyuktaṁ svāṁ rakṣantaṁ mahācamūm.
8. yādā drakṣyasi saṅgrāme kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram
japahomasamāyuktaṃ svāṃ rakṣantam mahācamūm
8. yādā saṅgrāme kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram
japahomasamāyuktaṃ svāṃ mahācamūm rakṣantam drakṣyasi
8. When you behold in battle Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, engaged in prayers (japa) and offerings (homa), protecting his mighty army.
आदित्यमिव दुर्धर्षं तपन्तं शत्रुवाहिनीम् ।
न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च ॥९॥
9. ādityamiva durdharṣaṁ tapantaṁ śatruvāhinīm ,
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtaṁ dvāparaṁ na ca.
9. ādityam iva durdharṣaṃ tapantam śatruvāhinīm
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtam dvāparam na ca
9. [yudhiṣṭhiram] ādityam iva durdharṣaṃ śatruvāhinīm tapantam [drakṣyasi - implied] tadā tretā na bhavitā,
kṛtam na [bhavitā],
dvāparam na ca [bhavitā]
9. When you behold Yudhiṣṭhira, irresistible like the sun (āditya), scorching the enemy army. Then there will be no Tretā Yuga, no Kṛta Yuga, and no Dvāpara Yuga (meaning it will be a unique and unprecedented time).
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि संग्रामे भीमसेनं महाबलम् ।
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीत्वा नृत्यन्तमाहवे ॥१०॥
10. yadā drakṣyasi saṁgrāme bhīmasenaṁ mahābalam ,
duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ pītvā nṛtyantamāhave.
10. yada drakṣyasi saṅgrāme bhīmasenam mahābalam
duḥśāsanasya rudhiram pītvā nṛtyantam āhave
10. yada saṅgrāme āhave duḥśāsanasya rudhiram
pītvā nṛtyantam mahābalam bhīmasenam drakṣyasi
10. When you see Bhimasena, the mighty one, dancing in battle, having drunk Duḥśāsana's blood in combat.
प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं प्रतिद्विरदघातिनम् ।
न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च ॥११॥
11. prabhinnamiva mātaṅgaṁ pratidviradaghātinam ,
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtaṁ dvāparaṁ na ca.
11. prabhinnam iva mātaṅgam pratidviradaghātinam
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtam dvāparam na ca
11. prabhinnam pratidviradaghātinam mātaṅgam iva (bhīmasenam)
na tadā tretā na kṛtam na dvāparam ca bhavitā
11. When you see him like a rutting elephant (mātaṅga) that crushes opposing elephants, then there will be no Tretā, no Kṛta, and no Dvāpara.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि संग्रामे माद्रीपुत्रौ महारथौ ।
वाहिनीं धार्तराष्ट्राणां क्षोभयन्तौ गजाविव ॥१२॥
12. yadā drakṣyasi saṁgrāme mādrīputrau mahārathau ,
vāhinīṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ kṣobhayantau gajāviva.
12. yada drakṣyasi saṅgrāme mādrīputrau mahārathau
vāhinīm dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām kṣobhayantau gajau iva
12. yada saṅgrāme gajau iva dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām vāhinīm
kṣobhayantau mahārathau mādrīputrau drakṣyasi
12. When you see the two sons of Madri (Mādrīputrau), the great warriors, in battle, agitating the army of the Dhritarashtras like two elephants.
विगाढे शस्त्रसंपाते परवीररथारुजौ ।
न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च ॥१३॥
13. vigāḍhe śastrasaṁpāte paravīrarathārujau ,
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtaṁ dvāparaṁ na ca.
13. vigāḍhe śastrasaṃpāte paravīrarathārujau na
tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtam dvāparam na ca
13. śastrasaṃpāte vigāḍhe paravīrarathārujau (mādrīputrau)
na tadā tretā na kṛtam na dvāparam ca bhavitā
13. When plunged deep into the shower of weapons, they (the Mādrīputrau) will be shattering the chariots of enemy heroes; then there will be no Tretā, no Kṛta, and no Dvāpara.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि संग्रामे द्रोणं शांतनवं कृपम् ।
सुयोधनं च राजानं सैन्धवं च जयद्रथम् ॥१४॥
14. yadā drakṣyasi saṁgrāme droṇaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ kṛpam ,
suyodhanaṁ ca rājānaṁ saindhavaṁ ca jayadratham.
14. yadā drakṣyasi saṃgrāme droṇam śāntanavam kṛpam
suyodhanam ca rājānam saindhavam ca jayadratham
14. yadā saṃgrāme droṇam śāntanavam kṛpam ca rājānam
suyodhanam ca saindhavam jayadratham drakṣyasi
14. When you will see Droṇa, Bhīṣma (Śāntanava), Kṛpa, King Suyodhana, and Jayadratha the Saindhava in battle,
युद्धायापततस्तूर्णं वारितान्सव्यसाचिना ।
न तदा भविता त्रेता न कृतं द्वापरं न च ॥१५॥
15. yuddhāyāpatatastūrṇaṁ vāritānsavyasācinā ,
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtaṁ dvāparaṁ na ca.
15. yuddhāya āpatataḥ tūrṇam vāritān savyasācinā
na tadā bhavitā tretā na kṛtam dvāparam na ca
15. yadā savyasācinā yuddhāya tūrṇam āpatataḥ vāritān (tān) drakṣyasi,
tadā tretā na bhavitā,
kṛtam ca na dvāparam ca na (bhavitā)
15. and when those swiftly advancing for battle are restrained by Arjuna (Savyasācin), then there will be neither a Tretā (Yuga), nor a Kṛta (Yuga), nor a Dvāpara (Yuga).
ब्रूयाः कर्ण इतो गत्वा द्रोणं शांतनवं कृपम् ।
सौम्योऽयं वर्तते मासः सुप्रापयवसेन्धनः ॥१६॥
16. brūyāḥ karṇa ito gatvā droṇaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ kṛpam ,
saumyo'yaṁ vartate māsaḥ suprāpayavasendhanaḥ.
16. brūyāḥ karṇa itaḥ gatvā droṇam śāntanavam kṛpam
saumyaḥ ayam vartate māsaḥ suprāpayavasendhanaḥ
16. karṇa,
itaḥ gatvā droṇam śāntanavam kṛpam (ca) brūyāḥ: ayam saumyaḥ māsaḥ vartate,
(yaḥ) suprāpayavasendhanaḥ (asti).
16. Go from here, Karṇa, and tell Droṇa, Bhīṣma (Śāntanava), and Kṛpa: "This gentle month is present, which is rich in easily available fodder and fuel,"
पक्वौषधिवनस्फीतः फलवानल्पमक्षिकः ।
निष्पङ्को रसवत्तोयो नात्युष्णशिशिरः सुखः ॥१७॥
17. pakvauṣadhivanasphītaḥ phalavānalpamakṣikaḥ ,
niṣpaṅko rasavattoyo nātyuṣṇaśiśiraḥ sukhaḥ.
17. pakvauṣadhivanaspītaḥ phalavān alpamakṣikaḥ
niṣpaṅkaḥ rasavat toyaḥ na ati uṣṇa śiśiraḥ sukhaḥ
17. (ayam māsaḥ) pakvauṣadhivanaspītaḥ phalavān alpamakṣikaḥ niṣpaṅkaḥ rasavat toyaḥ (ca asti).
(saḥ) na ati uṣṇaḥ na (ca) śiśiraḥ (kintu) sukhaḥ (asti).
17. is abundant with ripened herbs and forests, full of fruits, with few flies, mudless, with waters full of essence, neither too hot nor too cold, and pleasant.
सप्तमाच्चापि दिवसादमावास्या भविष्यति ।
संग्रामं योजयेत्तत्र तां ह्याहुः शक्रदेवताम् ॥१८॥
18. saptamāccāpi divasādamāvāsyā bhaviṣyati ,
saṁgrāmaṁ yojayettatra tāṁ hyāhuḥ śakradevatām.
18. saptamāt ca api divasāt amāvāsyā bhaviṣyati |
saṃgrāmam yojayet tatra tām hi āhuḥ śakradevatām
18. ca api saptamāt divasāt amāvāsyā bhaviṣyati
tatra saṃgrāmam yojayet hi tām śakradevatām āhuḥ
18. And on the seventh day from now, there will be a new moon. One should arrange the battle on that day, for they say it is presided over by Indra.
तथा राज्ञो वदेः सर्वान्ये युद्धायाभ्युपागताः ।
यद्वो मनीषितं तद्वै सर्वं संपादयामि वः ॥१९॥
19. tathā rājño vadeḥ sarvānye yuddhāyābhyupāgatāḥ ,
yadvo manīṣitaṁ tadvai sarvaṁ saṁpādayāmi vaḥ.
19. tathā rājñaḥ vadeḥ sarvān ye yuddhāya abhyupāgatāḥ
| yat vaḥ manīṣitam tat vai sarvam saṃpādayāmi vaḥ
19. tathā ye yuddhāya abhyupāgatāḥ sarvān rājñaḥ vadeḥ
yat vaḥ manīṣitam tat vai sarvam vaḥ saṃpādayāmi
19. And thus you should tell all the kings who have come for battle: 'Whatever you desire, I will accomplish all of it for you.'
राजानो राजपुत्राश्च दुर्योधनवशानुगाः ।
प्राप्य शस्त्रेण निधनं प्राप्स्यन्ति गतिमुत्तमाम् ॥२०॥
20. rājāno rājaputrāśca duryodhanavaśānugāḥ ,
prāpya śastreṇa nidhanaṁ prāpsyanti gatimuttamām.
20. rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca duryodhanavaśānugāḥ |
prāpya śastreṇa nidhanam prāpsyanti gatim uttamām
20. duryodhanavaśānugāḥ rājānaḥ ca rājaputrāḥ
śastreṇa nidhanam prāpya uttamām gatim prāpsyanti
20. Kings and princes who follow Duryodhana's will, having met their demise by weapons, will attain the supreme destination.
