ततः शिखण्डिनो माता यथातत्त्वं नराधिप ।
आचचक्षे महाबाहो भर्त्रे कन्यां शिखण्डिनीम् ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: "Thereupon, O King, O mighty-armed one, Shikhandi's mother truthfully explained to her husband that Shikhandini was a girl."
अपुत्रया मया राजन्सपत्नीनां भयादिदम् ।
कन्या शिखण्डिनी जाता पुरुषो वै निवेदितः ॥२॥
2. aputrayā mayā rājansapatnīnāṁ bhayādidam ,
kanyā śikhaṇḍinī jātā puruṣo vai niveditaḥ.
2. aputrayā mayā rājan sapatnīnāṃ bhayāt idam
kanyā śikhaṇḍinī jātā puruṣaḥ vai niveditaḥ

2. O King, by me, who was sonless, this (deception) was done out of fear of my co-wives. Though a daughter, Shikhandini, was born, she was indeed declared to be a male (puruṣa).
त्वया चैव नरश्रेष्ठ तन्मे प्रीत्यानुमोदितम् ।
पुत्रकर्म कृतं चैव कन्यायाः पार्थिवर्षभ ।
भार्या चोढा त्वया राजन्दशार्णाधिपतेः सुता ॥३॥
3. tvayā caiva naraśreṣṭha tanme prītyānumoditam ,
putrakarma kṛtaṁ caiva kanyāyāḥ pārthivarṣabha ,
bhāryā coḍhā tvayā rājandaśārṇādhipateḥ sutā.
3. tvayā ca eva naraśreṣṭha tat me prītyā
anumoditam putrakarma kṛtaṃ ca eva
kanyāyāḥ pārthivarṣabha bhāryā ca
ūḍhā tvayā rājan daśārṇādhipateḥ sutā
3. naraśreṣṭha,
tvayā ca eva tat me prītyā anumoditam.
pārthivarṣabha,
kanyāyāḥ putrakarma ca eva kṛtam.
rājan,
daśārṇādhipateḥ sutā bhāryā ca tvayā ūḍhā.
3. O best of men (naraśreṣṭha), that (deception) was indeed approved by you with affection for my sake. And, O chief of kings (pārthivarṣabha), the rites for a son were performed for the daughter. O King (rājan), the daughter of the lord of Daśārṇa was also married by you.
त्वया च प्रागभिहितं देववाक्यार्थदर्शनात् ।
कन्या भूत्वा पुमान्भावीत्येवं चैतदुपेक्षितम् ॥४॥
4. tvayā ca prāgabhihitaṁ devavākyārthadarśanāt ,
kanyā bhūtvā pumānbhāvītyevaṁ caitadupekṣitam.
4. tvayā ca prāk abhihitam devavākyārthadarśanāt
kanyā bhūtvā pumān bhāvī iti evam ca etat upekṣitam
4. tvayā ca prāk devavākyārthadarśanāt kanyā bhūtvā

4. Previously, you yourself had stated, based on discerning the meaning of divine words, that 'a girl will become a man.' Yet, this (prophecy) was disregarded.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा द्रुपदो यज्ञसेनः सर्वं तत्त्वं मन्त्रविद्भ्यो निवेद्य ।
मन्त्रं राजा मन्त्रयामास राजन्यद्यद्युक्तं रक्षणे वै प्रजानाम् ॥५॥
5. etacchrutvā drupado yajñasenaḥ; sarvaṁ tattvaṁ mantravidbhyo nivedya ,
mantraṁ rājā mantrayāmāsa rāja;nyadyadyuktaṁ rakṣaṇe vai prajānām.
5. etat śrutvā drupadaḥ yajñasenaḥ
sarvam tattvam mantravidbhyaḥ nivedya
mantram rājā mantrayāmāsa rājan
yat yat yuktam rakṣaṇe vai prajānām
5. drupadaḥ yajñasenaḥ etat śrutvā sarvam tattvam mantravidbhyaḥ nivedya,
rājā rājan mantram mantrayāmāsa yat yat yuktam vai prajānām rakṣaṇe
5. Having heard this, Drupada (Yajnasena) informed his counselors (mantra-vid) of the entire truth. The king then deliberated, O King, on counsel (mantra), considering whatever was indeed appropriate for the protection of his subjects.
संबन्धकं चैव समर्थ्य तस्मिन्दाशार्णके वै नृपतौ नरेन्द्र ।
स्वयं कृत्वा विप्रलम्भं यथावन्मन्त्रैकाग्रो निश्चयं वै जगाम ॥६॥
6. saṁbandhakaṁ caiva samarthya tasmi;ndāśārṇake vai nṛpatau narendra ,
svayaṁ kṛtvā vipralambhaṁ yathāva;nmantraikāgro niścayaṁ vai jagāma.
6. sambandhakam ca eva samarthya tasmin
dāśārṇake vai nṛpatau narendra
svayam kṛtvā vipralambham yathāvat
mantraikāgraḥ niścayam vai jagāma
6. narendra sambandhakam ca eva tasmin
dāśārṇake nṛpatau vai samarthya
svayam yathāvat vipralambham kṛtvā
mantraikāgraḥ niścayam vai jagāma
6. And indeed, having established the alliance with that king of Daśārṇa, O King (narendra)! he himself, having properly executed a deception, then, with his mind focused on counsel (mantra), indeed reached a firm decision.
स्वभावगुप्तं नगरमापत्काले तु भारत ।
गोपयामास राजेन्द्र सर्वतः समलंकृतम् ॥७॥
7. svabhāvaguptaṁ nagaramāpatkāle tu bhārata ,
gopayāmāsa rājendra sarvataḥ samalaṁkṛtam.

gopayāmāsa rājendra sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtam
7. bhārata rājendra tu āpatkāle svabhāvaguptam

7. But, O Bhārata (bhārata), O King of kings (rājendra), in a time of distress, he protected the city which was naturally well-protected and thoroughly adorned from all sides.
आर्तिं च परमां राजा जगाम सह भार्यया ।
दशार्णपतिना सार्धं विरोधे भरतर्षभ ॥८॥
8. ārtiṁ ca paramāṁ rājā jagāma saha bhāryayā ,
daśārṇapatinā sārdhaṁ virodhe bharatarṣabha.
8. ārtim ca paramām rājā jagāma saha bhāryayā
daśārṇapatinā sārdham virodhe bharatarṣabha
8. bharatarṣabha rājā bhāryayā saha daśārṇapatinā
sārdham virodhe ca paramām ārtim jagāma
8. O best of Bharatas, the king, accompanied by his wife, experienced extreme distress because of the conflict with the lord of Daśārṇa.
कथं संबन्धिना सार्धं न मे स्याद्विग्रहो महान् ।
इति संचिन्त्य मनसा दैवतान्यर्चयत्तदा ॥९॥
9. kathaṁ saṁbandhinā sārdhaṁ na me syādvigraho mahān ,
iti saṁcintya manasā daivatānyarcayattadā.
9. katham sambandhinā sārdham na me syāt vigrahaḥ
mahān iti saṃcintya manasā daivatāni arcayat tadā
9. tadā manasā katham me sambandhinā sārdham mahān
vigrahaḥ na syāt iti saṃcintya daivatāni arcayat
9. “How can I avoid a great conflict with my kinsman?” Pondering this in his mind, he then worshipped the deities.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तदा राजन्देवी देवपरं तथा ।
अर्चां प्रयुञ्जानमथो भार्या वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
10. taṁ tu dṛṣṭvā tadā rājandevī devaparaṁ tathā ,
arcāṁ prayuñjānamatho bhāryā vacanamabravīt.
10. tam tu dṛṣṭvā tadā rājan devī devaparam tathā
arcām prayuñjānam atha u bhāryā vacanam abravīt
10. rājan tadā devī bhāryā tam devaparam tathā arcām
prayuñjānam dṛṣṭvā tu atha u vacanam abravīt
10. O King, then seeing him, who was intently worshipping the deities, his wife, the queen, spoke these words.
देवानां प्रतिपत्तिश्च सत्या साधुमता सदा ।
सा तु दुःखार्णवं प्राप्य नः स्यादर्चयतां भृशम् ॥११॥
11. devānāṁ pratipattiśca satyā sādhumatā sadā ,
sā tu duḥkhārṇavaṁ prāpya naḥ syādarcayatāṁ bhṛśam.
11. devānām pratipattiḥ ca satyā sādhumatā sadā sā
tu duḥkhārṇavam prāpya naḥ syāt arcayatām bhṛśam
11. devānām pratipattiḥ ca sādhumatā sadā satyā tu
sā naḥ arcayatām duḥkhārṇavam prāpya bhṛśam syāt
11. The deities' response (or favor) is always considered truthful by the virtuous. But having plunged into an ocean of sorrow, how can that (favor) be greatly beneficial for us, the worshippers?
दैवतानि च सर्वाणि पूज्यन्तां भूरिदक्षिणैः ।
अग्नयश्चापि हूयन्तां दाशार्णप्रतिषेधने ॥१२॥
12. daivatāni ca sarvāṇi pūjyantāṁ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ,
agnayaścāpi hūyantāṁ dāśārṇapratiṣedhane.
12. devatāni ca sarvāṇi pūjyantām bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ
agnayaḥ ca api hūyantām dāśārṇapratiṣedhane
12. devatāni ca sarvāṇi bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ pūjyantām
agnayaḥ ca api dāśārṇapratiṣedhane hūyantām
12. Let all deities be worshipped with ample offerings, and let fires also be offered oblations, for the repulsion of the Daśārṇas.
अयुद्धेन निवृत्तिं च मनसा चिन्तयाभिभो ।
देवतानां प्रसादेन सर्वमेतद्भविष्यति ॥१३॥
13. ayuddhena nivṛttiṁ ca manasā cintayābhibho ,
devatānāṁ prasādena sarvametadbhaviṣyati.
13. ayuddhena nivṛttim ca manasā cintaya abhibho
devatānām prasādena sarvam etat bhaviṣyati
13. abhibho ayuddhena nivṛttim ca manasā cintaya
devatānām prasādena etat sarvam bhaviṣyati
13. O lord, mentally contemplate an end (to the conflict) through non-warfare. By the grace of the deities, all this will come to pass.
मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रितं सार्धं त्वया यत्पृथुलोचन ।
पुरस्यास्याविनाशाय तच्च राजंस्तथा कुरु ॥१४॥
14. mantribhirmantritaṁ sārdhaṁ tvayā yatpṛthulocana ,
purasyāsyāvināśāya tacca rājaṁstathā kuru.
14. mantribhiḥ mantritam sārdham tvayā yat pṛthulocana
purasya asya avināśāya tat ca rājan tathā kuru
14. pṛthulocana rājan yat mantribhiḥ tvayā sārdham
asya purasya avināśāya mantritam tat ca tathā kuru
14. O wide-eyed one, whatever was deliberated upon by the ministers together with you for the preservation of this city, O king, act upon that accordingly.
दैवं हि मानुषोपेतं भृशं सिध्यति पार्थिव ।
परस्परविरोधात्तु नानयोः सिद्धिरस्ति वै ॥१५॥
15. daivaṁ hi mānuṣopetaṁ bhṛśaṁ sidhyati pārthiva ,
parasparavirodhāttu nānayoḥ siddhirasti vai.
15. daivam hi mānuṣopetam bhṛśam sidhyati pārthiva
parasparavirodhāt tu na anayoḥ siddhiḥ asti vai
15. pārthiva daivam hi mānuṣopetam bhṛśam sidhyati
tu parasparavirodhāt anayoḥ siddhiḥ na asti vai
15. O king, indeed, divine intervention, when accompanied by human effort, is highly successful. But from their mutual opposition, there is certainly no success for these two.
तस्माद्विधाय नगरे विधानं सचिवैः सह ।
अर्चयस्व यथाकामं दैवतानि विशां पते ॥१६॥
16. tasmādvidhāya nagare vidhānaṁ sacivaiḥ saha ,
arcayasva yathākāmaṁ daivatāni viśāṁ pate.
16. tasmāt vidhāya nagare vidhānam sacivaiḥ saha
arcayasva yathākāmam daivatāni viśām pate
16. tasmāt viśām pate sacivaiḥ saha nagare vidhānam
vidhāya yathākāmam daivatāni arcayasva
16. Therefore, O lord of the people, after establishing proper arrangements in the city with your ministers, worship the deities as you please.
एवं संभाषमाणौ तौ दृष्ट्वा शोकपरायणौ ।
शिखण्डिनी तदा कन्या व्रीडितेव मनस्विनी ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇau tau dṛṣṭvā śokaparāyaṇau ,
śikhaṇḍinī tadā kanyā vrīḍiteva manasvinī.
17. evam saṃbhāṣamāṇau tau dṛṣṭvā śokaparāyaṇau
śikhaṇḍinī tadā kanyā vrīḍitā iva manasvinī
17. evam śokaparāyaṇau tau saṃbhāṣamāṇau dṛṣṭvā
tadā manasvinī kanyā śikhaṇḍinī vrīḍitā iva
17. Then, seeing those two conversing thus, both overcome by grief, the high-minded maiden Shikhaṇḍinī felt as if ashamed.
ततः सा चिन्तयामास मत्कृते दुःखितावुभौ ।
इमाविति ततश्चक्रे मतिं प्राणविनाशने ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sā cintayāmāsa matkṛte duḥkhitāvubhau ,
imāviti tataścakre matiṁ prāṇavināśane.
18. tataḥ sā cintayāmāsa matkṛte duḥkhitau ubhau
imau iti tataḥ cakre matim prāṇavināśane
18. tataḥ sā matkṛte imau ubhau duḥkhitau iti
cintayāmāsa tataḥ ca prāṇavināśane matim cakre
18. Then she thought, 'These two are both distressed because of me.' Consequently, she resolved to end her own life.
एवं सा निश्चयं कृत्वा भृशं शोकपरायणा ।
जगाम भवनं त्यक्त्वा गहनं निर्जनं वनम् ॥१९॥
19. evaṁ sā niścayaṁ kṛtvā bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇā ,
jagāma bhavanaṁ tyaktvā gahanaṁ nirjanaṁ vanam.
19. evam sā niścayam kṛtvā bhṛśam śokaparāyaṇā
jagāma bhavanam tyaktvā gahanam nirjanam vanam
19. evam sā niścayam kṛtvā bhṛśam śokaparāyaṇā
bhavanam tyaktvā gahanam nirjanam vanam jagāma
19. Having thus made this decision, and intensely overcome by grief, she abandoned her home and went to a dense, deserted forest.
यक्षेणर्द्धिमता राजन्स्थूणाकर्णेन पालितम् ।
तद्भयादेव च जनो विसर्जयति तद्वनम् ॥२०॥
20. yakṣeṇarddhimatā rājansthūṇākarṇena pālitam ,
tadbhayādeva ca jano visarjayati tadvanam.
20. yakṣeṇa ṛddhimatā rājan sthūṇākarṇena pālitam
tat bhayāt eva ca janaḥ visarjayati tat vanam
20. rājan yakṣeṇa ṛddhimatā sthūṇākarṇena pālitam
tat vanam tat bhayāt eva ca janaḥ visarjayati
20. O king, that forest, protected by the prosperous yakṣa (yakṣa) Sthūṇākarṇa, people abandon it out of fear of him.
तत्र स्थूणस्य भवनं सुधामृत्तिकलेपनम् ।
लाजोल्लापिकधूमाढ्यमुच्चप्राकारतोरणम् ॥२१॥
21. tatra sthūṇasya bhavanaṁ sudhāmṛttikalepanam ,
lājollāpikadhūmāḍhyamuccaprākāratoraṇam.
21. tatra sthūṇasya bhavanam sudhāmṛttikālepanam
lājollāpikadhūmāḍhyam uccaprākāratoraṇam
21. tatra sthūṇasya bhavanam sudhāmṛttikālepanam

21. There was Sthūṇa's abode, plastered with a coating of lime and clay, rich with the smoke of parched grain offerings, and featuring high walls and archways.
तत्प्रविश्य शिखण्डी सा द्रुपदस्यात्मजा नृप ।
अनश्नती बहुतिथं शरीरमुपशोषयत् ॥२२॥
22. tatpraviśya śikhaṇḍī sā drupadasyātmajā nṛpa ,
anaśnatī bahutithaṁ śarīramupaśoṣayat.
22. tat praviśya śikhaṇḍī sā drupadasya ātmajā
nṛpa anaśnatī bahutitham śarīram upaśoṣayat
22. nṛpa sā śikhaṇḍī drupadasya ātmajā tat praviśya
anaśnatī bahutitham śarīram upaśoṣayat
22. O king, having entered that place, she, Śikhaṇḍī, Drupada's daughter, emaciated her body by not eating for many days.
दर्शयामास तां यक्षः स्थूणो मध्वक्षसंयुतः ।
किमर्थोऽयं तवारम्भः करिष्ये ब्रूहि माचिरम् ॥२३॥
23. darśayāmāsa tāṁ yakṣaḥ sthūṇo madhvakṣasaṁyutaḥ ,
kimartho'yaṁ tavārambhaḥ kariṣye brūhi māciram.
23. darśayāmāsa tām yakṣaḥ sthūṇaḥ madhvakṣasaṃyutaḥ
kimarthaḥ ayam tava ārambhaḥ kariṣye brūhi mā ciram
23. madhvakṣasaṃyutaḥ sthūṇaḥ yakṣaḥ tām darśayāmāsa
kimarthaḥ ayam tava ārambhaḥ brūhi mā ciram kariṣye
23. The yakṣa (yakṣa) Sthūṇa, accompanied by wine and dice, revealed himself to her. He said, "What is the purpose of this endeavor of yours? Tell me, do not delay, and I will accomplish it."
अशक्यमिति सा यक्षं पुनः पुनरुवाच ह ।
करिष्यामीति चैनां स प्रत्युवाचाथ गुह्यकः ॥२४॥
24. aśakyamiti sā yakṣaṁ punaḥ punaruvāca ha ,
kariṣyāmīti caināṁ sa pratyuvācātha guhyakaḥ.
24. aśakyam iti sā yakṣam punaḥ punaḥ uvāca ha
kariṣyāmi iti ca enām saḥ pratyuvāca atha guhyakaḥ
24. sā yakṣam punaḥ punaḥ iti aśakyam ha uvāca atha
ca saḥ guhyakaḥ enām iti kariṣyāmi pratyuvāca
24. She repeatedly told the yaksha, "It is impossible." And then that guhyaka (yaksha) replied to her, "I will do it."
धनेश्वरस्यानुचरो वरदोऽस्मि नृपात्मजे ।
अदेयमपि दास्यामि ब्रूहि यत्ते विवक्षितम् ॥२५॥
25. dhaneśvarasyānucaro varado'smi nṛpātmaje ,
adeyamapi dāsyāmi brūhi yatte vivakṣitam.
25. dhaneśvarasya anucaraḥ varadaḥ asmi nṛpātmaje
adeyam api dāsyāmi brūhi yat te vivakṣitam
25. nṛpātmaje dhaneśvarasya anucaraḥ varadaḥ asmi
adeyam api dāsyāmi yat te vivakṣitam (asti) brūhi
25. “O daughter of the king, I am an attendant of the lord of wealth and a bestower of boons. I will give even that which is not to be given. Tell me what is desired by you.”
ततः शिखण्डी तत्सर्वमखिलेन न्यवेदयत् ।
तस्मै यक्षप्रधानाय स्थूणाकर्णाय भारत ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ śikhaṇḍī tatsarvamakhilena nyavedayat ,
tasmai yakṣapradhānāya sthūṇākarṇāya bhārata.
26. tataḥ śikhaṇḍī tat sarvam akhilena nyavedayat
tasmai yakṣapradhānāya sthūṇākarṇāya bhārata
26. bhārata tataḥ śikhaṇḍī tat sarvam akhilena
tasmai yakṣapradhānāya sthūṇākarṇāya nyavedayat
26. Then, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), Shikhandi reported that entire matter in full detail to that chief of the yakshas, Sthūṇākarṇa.
आपन्नो मे पिता यक्ष नचिराद्विनशिष्यति ।
अभियास्यति संक्रुद्धो दशार्णाधिपतिर्हि तम् ॥२७॥
27. āpanno me pitā yakṣa nacirādvinaśiṣyati ,
abhiyāsyati saṁkruddho daśārṇādhipatirhi tam.
27. āpannaḥ me pitā yakṣa nacirāt vinaśiṣyati
abhiyāsyati saṃkruddhaḥ daśārṇādhipatiḥ hi tam
27. yakṣa me pitā āpannaḥ (asti),
nacirāt vinaśiṣyati hi saṃkruddhaḥ daśārṇādhipatiḥ tam abhiyāsyati
27. “O yaksha, my father is in distress and will perish soon. For the lord of Daśārṇa, enraged, will indeed attack him.”
महाबलो महोत्साहः स हेमकवचो नृपः ।
तस्माद्रक्षस्व मां यक्ष पितरं मातरं च मे ॥२८॥
28. mahābalo mahotsāhaḥ sa hemakavaco nṛpaḥ ,
tasmādrakṣasva māṁ yakṣa pitaraṁ mātaraṁ ca me.
28. mahābalaḥ mahotsāhaḥ saḥ hemakavacaḥ nṛpaḥ
tasmāt rakṣasva mām yakṣa pitaram mātaram ca me
28. yakṣa tasmāt saḥ mahābalaḥ mahotsāhaḥ hemakavacaḥ
nṛpaḥ me pitaram mātaram ca mām rakṣasva
28. That king, powerful and greatly spirited, wears golden armor. Therefore, O Yaksha, protect me, my father, and my mother from him.
प्रतिज्ञातो हि भवता दुःखप्रतिनयो मम ।
भवेयं पुरुषो यक्ष त्वत्प्रसादादनिन्दितः ॥२९॥
29. pratijñāto hi bhavatā duḥkhapratinayo mama ,
bhaveyaṁ puruṣo yakṣa tvatprasādādaninditaḥ.
29. pratijñātaḥ hi bhavatā duḥkhapratinayaḥ mama
bhaveyam puruṣaḥ yakṣa tvatprasādāt aninditaḥ
29. yakṣa hi bhavatā mama duḥkhapratinayaḥ pratijñātaḥ
tvatprasādāt aninditaḥ puruṣaḥ bhaveyam
29. Indeed, you have promised to alleviate my sorrow. O Yaksha, by your grace, may I become a blameless person (puruṣa).
यावदेव स राजा वै नोपयाति पुरं मम ।
तावदेव महायक्ष प्रसादं कुरु गुह्यक ॥३०॥
30. yāvadeva sa rājā vai nopayāti puraṁ mama ,
tāvadeva mahāyakṣa prasādaṁ kuru guhyaka.
30. yāvat eva saḥ rājā vai na upayāti puram mama
tāvat eva mahāyakṣa prasādam kuru guhyaka
30. mahāyakṣa guhyaka yāvat eva saḥ rājā mama
