वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा श्रुत्वा तेषां वचस्तदा ।
चिरमन्तर्मना भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच सभासदः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato duryodhano rājā śrutvā teṣāṁ vacastadā ,
ciramantarmanā bhūtvā pratyuvāca sabhāsadaḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā śrutvā teṣām
vacaḥ tadā ciram antarmanā bhūtvā pratyuvāca sabhāsadaḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, King Duryodhana, after hearing their words, pondered deeply for a long time within himself before replying to the assembly members.
सुदुःखा खलु कार्याणां गतिर्विज्ञातुमन्ततः ।
तस्मात्सर्वे उदीक्षध्वं क्व नु स्युः पाण्डवा गताः ॥२॥
2. suduḥkhā khalu kāryāṇāṁ gatirvijñātumantataḥ ,
tasmātsarve udīkṣadhvaṁ kva nu syuḥ pāṇḍavā gatāḥ.
2. suduḥkhā khalu kāryāṇām gatiḥ vijñātum antataḥ
tasmāt sarve udīkṣadhvam kva nu syuḥ pāṇḍavā gatāḥ
2. Indeed, it is very difficult to fully ascertain the course of affairs. Therefore, all of you should diligently search to find out where the Pāṇḍavas have gone.
अल्पावशिष्टं कालस्य गतभूयिष्ठमन्ततः ।
तेषामज्ञातचर्यायामस्मिन्वर्षे त्रयोदशे ॥३॥
3. alpāvaśiṣṭaṁ kālasya gatabhūyiṣṭhamantataḥ ,
teṣāmajñātacaryāyāmasminvarṣe trayodaśe.
3. alpa avaśiṣṭam kālasya gata bhūyiṣṭham antataḥ
teṣām ajñātacaryāyām asmin varṣe trayodaśe
3. In this thirteenth year of their incognito (ajñātacaryā) period, only a small portion of the time remains, as the greater part has already passed.
अस्य वर्षस्य शेषं चेद्व्यतीयुरिह पाण्डवाः ।
निवृत्तसमयास्ते हि सत्यव्रतपरायणाः ॥४॥
4. asya varṣasya śeṣaṁ cedvyatīyuriha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
nivṛttasamayāste hi satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ.
4. asya varṣasya śeṣam cet vi-ati-īyuḥ iha pāṇḍavāḥ
nivṛtta samayāḥ te hi satyavrata parāyaṇāḥ
4. If the Pāṇḍavas successfully complete the remainder of this year here, then their period of exile will have ended, for they are indeed dedicated to their vows of truth (satyavrata).
क्षरन्त इव नागेन्द्राः सर्व आशीविषोपमाः ।
दुःखा भवेयुः संरब्धाः कौरवान्प्रति ते ध्रुवम् ॥५॥
5. kṣaranta iva nāgendrāḥ sarva āśīviṣopamāḥ ,
duḥkhā bhaveyuḥ saṁrabdhāḥ kauravānprati te dhruvam.
5. kṣarantaḥ iva nāgendrāḥ sarve āśīviṣopamāḥ duḥkhāḥ
bhaveyuḥ saṃrabdhāḥ kauravān prati te dhruvam
5. They (the Pāṇḍavas) would surely become miserable and enraged towards the Kauravas, resembling great serpents oozing venom, all of them like venomous snakes.
अर्वाक्कालस्य विज्ञाताः कृच्छ्ररूपधराः पुनः ।
प्रविशेयुर्जितक्रोधास्तावदेव पुनर्वनम् ॥६॥
6. arvākkālasya vijñātāḥ kṛcchrarūpadharāḥ punaḥ ,
praviśeyurjitakrodhāstāvadeva punarvanam.
6. arvāk kālasya vijñātāḥ kṛcchrarūpadharāḥ punaḥ
praviseyuḥ jitakrodhāḥ tāvat eva punaḥ vanam
6. Should they be recognized before the appointed time, they would, assuming difficult disguises again and having subdued their anger, re-enter the forest for that same duration.
तस्मात्क्षिप्रं बुभुत्सध्वं यथा नोऽत्यन्तमव्ययम् ।
राज्यं निर्द्वन्द्वमव्यग्रं निःसपत्नं चिरं भवेत् ॥७॥
7. tasmātkṣipraṁ bubhutsadhvaṁ yathā no'tyantamavyayam ,
rājyaṁ nirdvandvamavyagraṁ niḥsapatnaṁ ciraṁ bhavet.
7. tasmāt kṣipram bubhutsadhvam yathā naḥ atyantam avyayam
rājyam nirdvandvam avyagram niḥsapatnam ciram bhavet
7. Therefore, quickly seek to understand how our kingdom may become perpetually imperishable, free from conflict, undisturbed, and without rivals for a long time.
अथाब्रवीत्ततः कर्णः क्षिप्रं गच्छन्तु भारत ।
अन्ये धूर्ततरा दक्षा निभृताः साधुकारिणः ॥८॥
8. athābravīttataḥ karṇaḥ kṣipraṁ gacchantu bhārata ,
anye dhūrtatarā dakṣā nibhṛtāḥ sādhukāriṇaḥ.
8. atha abravīt tataḥ karṇaḥ kṣipram gacchantu bhārata
anye dhūrtatarāḥ dakṣāḥ nibhṛtāḥ sādhukāriṇaḥ
8. Thereafter, Karṇa spoke: 'O Bhārata, let other agents go quickly, those who are exceedingly cunning, skillful, discreet, and act effectively.'
चरन्तु देशान्संवीताः स्फीताञ्जनपदाकुलान् ।
तत्र गोष्ठीष्वथान्यासु सिद्धप्रव्रजितेषु च ॥९॥
9. carantu deśānsaṁvītāḥ sphītāñjanapadākulān ,
tatra goṣṭhīṣvathānyāsu siddhapravrajiteṣu ca.
9. carantu deśān saṃvītāḥ sphītān janapadākulān
tatra goṣṭhīṣu atha anyāsu siddhapravrajiteṣu ca
9. Let them, disguised, wander through prosperous lands that are crowded with people. Let them search there, among gatherings and other assemblies, and among perfected beings (siddhas) and ascetics.
परिचारेषु तीर्थेषु विविधेष्वाकरेषु च ।
विज्ञातव्या मनुष्यैस्तैस्तर्कया सुविनीतया ॥१०॥
10. paricāreṣu tīrtheṣu vividheṣvākareṣu ca ,
vijñātavyā manuṣyaistaistarkayā suvinītayā.
10. paricāreṣu tīrtheṣu vividheṣu ākareṣu ca
vijñātavyā manuṣyaiḥ taiḥ tarkayā suvinītayā
10. A well-disciplined inquiry (tarkā) should be employed by those men in various services, sacred places (tīrthas), and mines.
विविधैस्तत्परैः सम्यक्तज्ज्ञैर्निपुणसंवृतैः ।
अन्वेष्टव्याश्च निपुणं पाण्डवाश्छन्नवासिनः ॥११॥
11. vividhaistatparaiḥ samyaktajjñairnipuṇasaṁvṛtaiḥ ,
anveṣṭavyāśca nipuṇaṁ pāṇḍavāśchannavāsinaḥ.
11. vividhaiḥ tatparaiḥ samyak tajjñaiḥ nipuṇasaṃvṛtaiḥ
anveṣṭavyāḥ ca nipuṇam pāṇḍavāḥ channavāsinaḥ
11. The Pandavas, living in disguise, should be skillfully sought by various, dedicated experts who are thoroughly and cleverly disguised.
नदीकुञ्जेषु तीर्थेषु ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च ।
आश्रमेषु च रम्येषु पर्वतेषु गुहासु च ॥१२॥
12. nadīkuñjeṣu tīrtheṣu grāmeṣu nagareṣu ca ,
āśrameṣu ca ramyeṣu parvateṣu guhāsu ca.
12. nadīkuñjeṣu tīrtheṣu grāmeṣu nagareṣu ca
āśrameṣu ca ramyeṣu parvateṣu guhāsu ca
12. (They should be sought) in river groves, in sacred places (tīrthas), in villages, and in cities; and in beautiful hermitages (āśramas), on mountains, and in caves.
अथाग्रजानन्तरजः पापभावानुरागिणम् ।
ज्येष्ठं दुःशासनस्तत्र भ्राता भ्रातरमब्रवीत् ॥१३॥
13. athāgrajānantarajaḥ pāpabhāvānurāgiṇam ,
jyeṣṭhaṁ duḥśāsanastatra bhrātā bhrātaramabravīt.
13. atha agrajānantarajaḥ pāpabhāvānurāgiṇam jyeṣṭham
duḥśāsanaḥ tatra bhrātā bhrātaram abravīt
13. Then, Duḥśāsana, the younger brother, spoke there to his elder brother, who was inclined towards sinful thoughts.
एतच्च कर्णो यत्प्राह सर्वमीक्षामहे तथा ।
यथोद्दिष्टं चराः सर्वे मृगयन्तु ततस्ततः ।
एते चान्ये च भूयांसो देशाद्देशं यथाविधि ॥१४॥
14. etacca karṇo yatprāha sarvamīkṣāmahe tathā ,
yathoddiṣṭaṁ carāḥ sarve mṛgayantu tatastataḥ ,
ete cānye ca bhūyāṁso deśāddeśaṁ yathāvidhi.
14. etat ca karṇaḥ yat prāha sarvam
īkṣāmahe tathā yathā uddiṣṭam carāḥ
sarve mṛgayantu tatas tataḥ ete ca anye
ca bhūyāṃsaḥ deśāt deśam yathāvidhi
14. And as for what Karṇa said, we shall observe all of it accordingly. Let all the spies, as instructed, search everywhere. And these and many others should proceed from country to country, following the proper procedure.
न तु तेषां गतिर्वासः प्रवृत्तिश्चोपलभ्यते ।
अत्याहितं वा गूढास्ते पारं वोर्मिमतो गताः ॥१५॥
15. na tu teṣāṁ gatirvāsaḥ pravṛttiścopalabhyate ,
atyāhitaṁ vā gūḍhāste pāraṁ vormimato gatāḥ.
15. na tu teṣām gatiḥ vāsaḥ pravṛttiḥ ca upalabhyate
atyāhitam vā gūḍhāḥ te pāram vā ūrmimataḥ gatāḥ
15. However, their movements, dwelling places, or activities are not being found. Or perhaps, having gone into hiding, they have met with great danger, or they have reached the far shore of the surging waters.
व्यालैर्वापि महारण्ये भक्षिताः शूरमानिनः ।
अथ वा विषमं प्राप्य विनष्टाः शाश्वतीः समाः ॥१६॥
16. vyālairvāpi mahāraṇye bhakṣitāḥ śūramāninaḥ ,
atha vā viṣamaṁ prāpya vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ.
16. vyālaiḥ vā api mahāraṇye bhakṣitāḥ śūramāninaḥ
atha vā viṣamam prāpya vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
16. Or perhaps, considering themselves brave, they were devoured by wild animals in the great forest. Or else, having encountered great difficulty, they have perished forever.
तस्मान्मानसमव्यग्रं कृत्वा त्वं कुरुनन्दन ।
कुरु कार्यं यथोत्साहं मन्यसे यन्नराधिप ॥१७॥
17. tasmānmānasamavyagraṁ kṛtvā tvaṁ kurunandana ,
kuru kāryaṁ yathotsāhaṁ manyase yannarādhipa.
17. tasmāt mānasam avyagram kṛtvā tvam kurunandana
kuru kāryam yathā utsāham manyase yat narādhipa
17. Therefore, O Kuru scion, having made your mind unwavering, perform the duty with the enthusiasm that you, O king of men, deem appropriate.
