भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्य दूतेन द्रुपदस्य तदा नृप ।
चोरस्येव गृहीतस्य न प्रावर्तत भारती ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktasya dūtena drupadasya tadā nṛpa ,
corasyeva gṛhītasya na prāvartata bhāratī.

1. Bhishma said: O King, when Drupada was thus addressed by the messenger, his speech ceased, just like that of a thief who has been caught.
स यत्नमकरोत्तीव्रं संबन्धैरनुसान्त्वनैः ।
दूतैर्मधुरसंभाषैर्नैतदस्तीति संदिशन् ॥२॥
2. sa yatnamakarottīvraṁ saṁbandhairanusāntvanaiḥ ,
dūtairmadhurasaṁbhāṣairnaitadastīti saṁdiśan.
2. saḥ yatnam akarot tīvram sambandhaiḥ anusāntvanaiḥ
dūtaiḥ madhurasaṃbhāṣaiḥ na etat asti iti saṃdiśan
2. saḥ tīvram yatnam akarot sambandhaiḥ anusāntvanaiḥ
dūtaiḥ madhurasaṃbhāṣaiḥ na etat asti iti saṃdiśan
2. He then made a strong effort through family ties and appeasing words, sending messengers with pleasant conversations, conveying the message, 'This is not true!'
स राजा भूय एवाथ कृत्वा तत्त्वत आगमम् ।
कन्येति पाञ्चालसुतां त्वरमाणोऽभिनिर्ययौ ॥३॥
3. sa rājā bhūya evātha kṛtvā tattvata āgamam ,
kanyeti pāñcālasutāṁ tvaramāṇo'bhiniryayau.
3. saḥ rājā bhūya eva atha kṛtvā tattvataḥ āgamam
kanyā iti pāñcālasutām tvaramāṇaḥ abhiniryayau
3. atha saḥ rājā bhūya eva tattvataḥ āgamam kṛtvā

3. Then, that king, having truly ascertained the facts and accepting that 'she is a daughter', quickly set out concerning the Panchala princess.
ततः संप्रेषयामास मित्राणाममितौजसाम् ।
दुहितुर्विप्रलम्भं तं धात्रीणां वचनात्तदा ॥४॥
4. tataḥ saṁpreṣayāmāsa mitrāṇāmamitaujasām ,
duhiturvipralambhaṁ taṁ dhātrīṇāṁ vacanāttadā.
4. tataḥ sampreṣayām āsa mitrāṇām amitojasām
duhituḥ vipralambham tam dhātrīṇām vacanāt tadā
4. tataḥ tadā saḥ dhātrīṇām vacanāt duhituḥ tam
vipralambham amitojasām mitrāṇām sampreṣayām āsa
4. Then, at that time, he sent word of that humiliation of his daughter, based on the words of her nurses, to his friends of immeasurable strength.
ततः समुदयं कृत्वा बलानां राजसत्तमः ।
अभियाने मतिं चक्रे द्रुपदं प्रति भारत ॥५॥
5. tataḥ samudayaṁ kṛtvā balānāṁ rājasattamaḥ ,
abhiyāne matiṁ cakre drupadaṁ prati bhārata.
5. tataḥ samudayam kṛtvā balānām rājasattamaḥ
abhiyāne matim cakre drupadam prati bhārata
5. tataḥ bhārata rājasattamaḥ balānām samudayam
kṛtvā drupadam prati abhiyāne matim cakre
5. Then, O Bhārata, the best of kings, having gathered his forces, resolved upon an expedition against Drupada.
ततः संमन्त्रयामास मित्रैः सह महीपतिः ।
हिरण्यवर्मा राजेन्द्र पाञ्चाल्यं पार्थिवं प्रति ॥६॥
6. tataḥ saṁmantrayāmāsa mitraiḥ saha mahīpatiḥ ,
hiraṇyavarmā rājendra pāñcālyaṁ pārthivaṁ prati.
6. tataḥ sammantrayām āsa mitraiḥ saha mahīpatiḥ
hiraṇyavarmā rājendra pāñcālyam pārthivam prati
6. tataḥ rājendra mahīpatiḥ hiraṇyavarmā mitraiḥ
saha pāñcālyam pārthivam prati sammantrayām āsa
6. Then, O best of kings, King Hiraṇyavarman consulted with his friends concerning the Pāñcāla ruler.
तत्र वै निश्चितं तेषामभूद्राज्ञां महात्मनाम् ।
तथ्यं चेद्भवति ह्येतत्कन्या राजञ्शिखण्डिनी ।
बद्ध्वा पाञ्चालराजानमानयिष्यामहे गृहान् ॥७॥
7. tatra vai niścitaṁ teṣāmabhūdrājñāṁ mahātmanām ,
tathyaṁ cedbhavati hyetatkanyā rājañśikhaṇḍinī ,
baddhvā pāñcālarājānamānayiṣyāmahe gṛhān.
7. tatra vai niścitam teṣām abhūt rājñām
mahātmanām | tathyam cet bhavati hi
etat kanyā rājan śikhaṇḍinī | baddhvā
pāñcālarājānam ānayiṣyāmahe gṛhān
7. tatra vai teṣām mahātmanām rājñām
niścitam abhūt rājan cet etat kanyā
śikhaṇḍinī hi tathyam bhavati (tadā)
pāñcālarājānam baddhvā gṛhān ānayiṣyāmahe
7. There, indeed, it was decided by those great-souled kings: "O King, if it is indeed true that this Śikhaṇḍinī is a girl, then we shall capture the Pāñcāla king and bring him to our homes."
अन्यं राजानमाधाय पाञ्चालेषु नरेश्वरम् ।
घातयिष्याम नृपतिं द्रुपदं सशिखण्डिनम् ॥८॥
8. anyaṁ rājānamādhāya pāñcāleṣu nareśvaram ,
ghātayiṣyāma nṛpatiṁ drupadaṁ saśikhaṇḍinam.
8. anyam rājānam ādhāya pāñcāleṣu nara-īśvaram
ghātayiṣyāma nṛpatim drupadam sa-śikhaṇḍinam
8. pāñcāleṣu anyam nara-īśvaram rājānam ādhāya,
drupadam nṛpatim sa-śikhaṇḍinam ghātayiṣyāma.
8. Having installed another ruler (rājan) as king (nṛpati) in the Pañcāla lands, we will kill King Drupada, along with Śikhaṇḍin.
स तदा दूतमाज्ञाय पुनः क्षत्तारमीश्वरः ।
प्रास्थापयत्पार्षताय हन्मीति त्वां स्थिरो भव ॥९॥
9. sa tadā dūtamājñāya punaḥ kṣattāramīśvaraḥ ,
prāsthāpayatpārṣatāya hanmīti tvāṁ sthiro bhava.
9. saḥ tadā dūtam ājñāya punaḥ kṣattāram īśvaraḥ
prāsthāpayat pārṣatāya hanmi iti tvām sthiraḥ bhava
9. tadā saḥ īśvaraḥ dūtam ājñāya,
punaḥ kṣattāram pārṣatāya prāsthāpayat,
(uvāca ca) "tvām hanmi; sthiraḥ bhava" iti.
9. Then, he, the lord (īśvara), having issued a command to his messenger, again sent forth that charioteer (kṣattṛ) to Drupada (Pārṣata) with the message, 'I will kill you; be steadfast!'
स प्रकृत्या च वै भीरुः किल्बिषी च नराधिपः ।
भयं तीव्रमनुप्राप्तो द्रुपदः पृथिवीपतिः ॥१०॥
10. sa prakṛtyā ca vai bhīruḥ kilbiṣī ca narādhipaḥ ,
bhayaṁ tīvramanuprāpto drupadaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ.
10. saḥ prakṛtyā ca vai bhīruḥ kilbiṣī ca nara-adhipaḥ
bhayam tīvram anu-prāptaḥ drupadaḥ pṛthivī-patiḥ
10. saḥ drupadaḥ pṛthivī-patiḥ nara-adhipaḥ,
prakṛtyā ca vai bhīruḥ ca kilbiṣī (āsīt),
tīvram bhayam anu-prāptaḥ.
10. Indeed, that king (nara-adhipa), Drupada, the ruler of the earth (pṛthivī-pati), was by nature (prakṛti) timid and also an offender, and he experienced intense fear.
विसृज्य दूतं दाशार्णं द्रुपदः शोककर्शितः ।
समेत्य भार्यां रहिते वाक्यमाह नराधिपः ॥११॥
11. visṛjya dūtaṁ dāśārṇaṁ drupadaḥ śokakarśitaḥ ,
sametya bhāryāṁ rahite vākyamāha narādhipaḥ.
11. visṛjya dūtam dāśārṇam drupadaḥ śoka-karśitaḥ
sametya bhāryām rahite vākyam āha nara-adhipaḥ
11. dāśārṇam dūtam visṛjya,
śoka-karśitaḥ drupadaḥ nara-adhipaḥ rahite bhāryām sametya,
vākyam āha.
11. Having dismissed the messenger from Daśārṇa, King Drupada (nara-adhipa), afflicted by sorrow (śoka-karśita), met his wife in a private place and spoke words to her.
भयेन महताविष्टो हृदि शोकेन चाहतः ।
पाञ्चालराजो दयितां मातरं वै शिखण्डिनः ॥१२॥
12. bhayena mahatāviṣṭo hṛdi śokena cāhataḥ ,
pāñcālarājo dayitāṁ mātaraṁ vai śikhaṇḍinaḥ.
12. bhayena mahatā āviṣṭaḥ hṛdi śokena ca āhataḥ
pāñcālarājaḥ dayitām mātaram vai śikhaṇḍinaḥ
12. pāñcālarājaḥ mahatā bhayena āviṣṭaḥ ca hṛdi
śokena āhataḥ śikhaṇḍinaḥ dayitām mātaram vai
12. Overcome by great fear and afflicted in his heart by sorrow, the King of Pañcāla reflected upon Śikhaṇḍin's beloved mother.
अभियास्यति मां कोपात्संबन्धी सुमहाबलः ।
हिरण्यवर्मा नृपतिः कर्षमाणो वरूथिनीम् ॥१३॥
13. abhiyāsyati māṁ kopātsaṁbandhī sumahābalaḥ ,
hiraṇyavarmā nṛpatiḥ karṣamāṇo varūthinīm.
13. abhīyāsyati mām kopāt sambandhī sumahābalaḥ
hiraṇyavarmā nṛpatiḥ karṣamāṇaḥ varūthinīm
13. mama sambandhī sumahābalaḥ nṛpatiḥ hiraṇyavarmā
kopāt varūthinīm karṣamāṇaḥ mām abhīyāsyati
13. My relative, King Hiraṇyavarmā, who is exceedingly mighty, will attack me out of anger, mobilizing his army.
किमिदानीं करिष्यामि मूढः कन्यामिमां प्रति ।
शिखण्डी किल पुत्रस्ते कन्येति परिशङ्कितः ॥१४॥
14. kimidānīṁ kariṣyāmi mūḍhaḥ kanyāmimāṁ prati ,
śikhaṇḍī kila putraste kanyeti pariśaṅkitaḥ.
14. kim idānīm kariṣyāmi mūḍhaḥ kanyām imām prati
śikhaṇḍī kila putraḥ te kanyā iti pariśaṅkitaḥ
14. mūḍhaḥ aham idānīm imām kanyām prati kim kariṣyāmi śikhaṇḍī
kila te putraḥ [asti] iti kanyā pariśaṅkitaḥ [asti]
14. What shall I, a bewildered man, do now concerning this daughter (Hiraṇyavarmā's daughter)? Śikhaṇḍin, though indeed known as your son, is suspected of being a girl.
इति निश्चित्य तत्त्वेन समित्रः सबलानुगः ।
वञ्चितोऽस्मीति मन्वानो मां किलोद्धर्तुमिच्छति ॥१५॥
15. iti niścitya tattvena samitraḥ sabalānugaḥ ,
vañcito'smīti manvāno māṁ kiloddhartumicchati.
15. iti niścitya tattvena samitraḥ sabalānugaḥ vañcitaḥ
asmi iti manvānaḥ mām kila uddhartum icchati
15. iti tattvena niścitya samitraḥ sabalānugaḥ [saḥ hiraṇyavarmā]
vañcitaḥ asmi iti manvānaḥ kila mām uddhartum icchati
15. Thus having truly ascertained the situation, he (Hiraṇyavarmā), accompanied by his friends and followers, thinking 'I have been deceived,' indeed desires to destroy me.
किमत्र तथ्यं सुश्रोणि किं मिथ्या ब्रूहि शोभने ।
श्रुत्वा त्वत्तः शुभे वाक्यं संविधास्याम्यहं तथा ॥१६॥
16. kimatra tathyaṁ suśroṇi kiṁ mithyā brūhi śobhane ,
śrutvā tvattaḥ śubhe vākyaṁ saṁvidhāsyāmyahaṁ tathā.
16. kim atra tathyaṃ suśroṇi kim mithyā brūhi śobhane
śrutvā tvattaḥ śubhe vākyaṃ saṃvidhāsyāmi aham tathā
16. suśroṇi śobhane śubhe atra kim tathyaṃ kim mithyā
brūhi tvattaḥ vākyaṃ śrutvā aham tathā saṃvidhāsyāmi
16. O beautiful-hipped one, O beautiful one, tell me what is true here and what is false. O auspicious one, having heard your statement, I will act accordingly.
अहं हि संशयं प्राप्तो बाला चेयं शिखण्डिनी ।
त्वं च राज्ञि महत्कृच्छ्रं संप्राप्ता वरवर्णिनि ॥१७॥
17. ahaṁ hi saṁśayaṁ prāpto bālā ceyaṁ śikhaṇḍinī ,
tvaṁ ca rājñi mahatkṛcchraṁ saṁprāptā varavarṇini.
17. aham hi saṃśayaṃ prāptaḥ bālā ca iyam śikhaṇḍinī
tvam ca rājñi mahat kṛcchraṃ saṃprāptā varavarṇini
17. hi aham saṃśayaṃ prāptaḥ iyam ca śikhaṇḍinī bālā
varavarṇini rājñi tvam ca mahat kṛcchraṃ saṃprāptā
17. Indeed, I am in doubt, and this Shikhaṇḍinī is but a young girl. And you, O queen, O fair-complexioned one, have also fallen into great difficulty.
सा त्वं सर्वविमोक्षाय तत्त्वमाख्याहि पृच्छतः ।
तथा विदध्यां सुश्रोणि कृत्यस्यास्य शुचिस्मिते ।
शिखण्डिनि च मा भैस्त्वं विधास्ये तत्र तत्त्वतः ॥१८॥
18. sā tvaṁ sarvavimokṣāya tattvamākhyāhi pṛcchataḥ ,
tathā vidadhyāṁ suśroṇi kṛtyasyāsya śucismite ,
śikhaṇḍini ca mā bhaistvaṁ vidhāsye tatra tattvataḥ.
18. sā tvam sarvavimokṣāya tattvam ākhyāhi
pṛcchataḥ tathā vidadhyāṃ suśroṇi
kṛtyasya asya śucismite śikhaṇḍini ca
mā bhaiḥ tvam vidhāsye tatra tattvataḥ
18. suśroṇi śucismite sā tvam sarvavimokṣāya
pṛcchataḥ (me) tattvam ākhyāhi asya
kṛtyasya (viṣaye) tathā vidadhyām ca śikhaṇḍini
tvam mā bhaiḥ tatra tattvataḥ vidhāsye
18. Therefore, O beautiful-hipped one, O pure-smiling one, for the sake of ultimate liberation (mokṣa) from all this, reveal the truth (tattva) to me who asks. I shall act accordingly in this matter. And O Shikhaṇḍinī, do not be afraid; I will truly resolve the situation there.
क्रिययाहं वरारोहे वञ्चितः पुत्रधर्मतः ।
मया दाशार्णको राजा वञ्चितश्च महीपतिः ।
तदाचक्ष्व महाभागे विधास्ये तत्र यद्धितम् ॥१९॥
19. kriyayāhaṁ varārohe vañcitaḥ putradharmataḥ ,
mayā dāśārṇako rājā vañcitaśca mahīpatiḥ ,
tadācakṣva mahābhāge vidhāsye tatra yaddhitam.
19. kriyayā aham varārohe vañcitaḥ
putradharmataḥ mayā dāśārṇakaḥ rājā
vañcitaḥ ca mahīpatiḥ tad ācakṣva
mahābhāge vidhāsye tatra yat hitam
19. varārohe kriyayā aham putradharmataḥ
vañcitaḥ mayā dāśārṇakaḥ rājā
ca mahīpatiḥ vañcitaḥ mahābhāge
tat ācakṣva tatra yat hitam vidhāsye
19. O excellent-thighed one, by this act I was deprived of the natural law (dharma) of a son. By me, King Dāśārṇaka was also deceived, and another king too. Therefore, O illustrious one, tell me what is beneficial in that matter, and I will accomplish it.
जानतापि नरेन्द्रेण ख्यापनार्थं परस्य वै ।
प्रकाशं चोदिता देवी प्रत्युवाच महीपतिम् ॥२०॥
20. jānatāpi narendreṇa khyāpanārthaṁ parasya vai ,
prakāśaṁ coditā devī pratyuvāca mahīpatim.
20. jānatā api narendreṇa khyāpanārthaṃ parasya
vai prakāśaṃ coditā devī pratyuvāca mahīpatim
20. narendreṇa jānatā api,
parasya khyāpanārthaṃ prakāśaṃ coditā devī vai mahīpatim pratyuvāca.
20. Even though the king (Drupada) knew, the queen, urged by him to publicly reveal the truth to the other party (King Hiranyavarman), replied to her husband, the king.
