संजय उवाच ।
यन्मां पार्थस्य संग्रामे कर्माणि परिपृच्छसि ।
तच्छृणुष्व महाराज पार्थो यदकरोन्मृधे ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
yanmāṁ pārthasya saṁgrāme karmāṇi paripṛcchasi ,
tacchṛṇuṣva mahārāja pārtho yadakaronmṛdhe.

1. Sañjaya said: 'O great king (mahārāja), listen to the deeds of Pārtha (Arjuna) in battle, about which you are asking me. Listen to what Pārtha (Arjuna) did in the conflict (mṛdhe).'
रजो दृष्ट्वा समुद्भूतं श्रुत्वा च गजनिस्वनम् ।
भज्यतां भगदत्तेन कौन्तेयः कृष्णमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. rajo dṛṣṭvā samudbhūtaṁ śrutvā ca gajanisvanam ,
bhajyatāṁ bhagadattena kaunteyaḥ kṛṣṇamabravīt.
2. rajaḥ dṛṣṭvā samudbhūtam śrutvā ca gajanisvanam
bhajyatām bhagadattena kaunteyaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt
2. rajaḥ samudbhūtam dṛṣṭvā ca gajanisvanam śrutvā,
kaunteyaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt: "bhagadattena bhajyatām!"
2. Having seen the dust that had arisen and having heard the roar of elephants, Kaunteya (Arjuna) said to Kṛṣṇa, 'We are being overwhelmed by Bhagadatta!'
यथा प्राग्ज्योतिषो राजा गजेन मधुसूदन ।
त्वरमाणोऽभ्यतिक्रान्तो ध्रुवं तस्यैष निस्वनः ॥३॥
3. yathā prāgjyotiṣo rājā gajena madhusūdana ,
tvaramāṇo'bhyatikrānto dhruvaṁ tasyaiṣa nisvanaḥ.
3. yathā prāgjyotiṣaḥ rājā gajena madhusūdana tvaramāṇaḥ
abhyatikrāntaḥ dhruvam tasya eṣaḥ niḥsvanaḥ
3. madhusūdana,
yathā prāgjyotiṣaḥ rājā gajena tvaramāṇaḥ abhyatikrāntaḥ,
dhruvam eṣaḥ tasya niḥsvanaḥ.
3. Just as the king of Pragjyotisha, O slayer of Madhu (Madhusudana), swiftly approaches with his elephant, surely this must be his roar.
इन्द्रादनवरः संख्ये गजयानविशारदः ।
प्रथमो वा द्वितीयो वा पृथिव्यामिति मे मतिः ॥४॥
4. indrādanavaraḥ saṁkhye gajayānaviśāradaḥ ,
prathamo vā dvitīyo vā pṛthivyāmiti me matiḥ.
4. indrāt anavaraḥ saṃkhye gajayānaviśāradaḥ
prathamaḥ vā dvitīyaḥ vā pṛthivyām iti me matiḥ
4. (Saḥ) saṃkhye indrāt anavaraḥ gajayānaviśāradaḥ ca (asti).
pṛthivyām prathamaḥ vā dvitīyaḥ vā iti me matiḥ.
4. He is not inferior to Indra in battle, and he is skilled in elephant riding. In my opinion, he is either the first or the second (greatest) on earth.
स चापि द्विरदश्रेष्ठः सदाप्रतिगजो युधि ।
सर्वशब्दातिगः संख्ये कृतकर्मा जितक्लमः ॥५॥
5. sa cāpi dviradaśreṣṭhaḥ sadāpratigajo yudhi ,
sarvaśabdātigaḥ saṁkhye kṛtakarmā jitaklamaḥ.
5. saḥ ca api dviradaśreṣṭhaḥ sadā apratigajaḥ yudhi
sarvaśabdātigaḥ saṃkhye kṛtakarmā jitaklamaḥ
5. saḥ ca api dviradaśreṣṭhaḥ (asti).
saḥ yudhi sadā apratigajaḥ,
saṃkhye sarvaśabdātigaḥ,
kṛtakarmā (ca) jitaklamaḥ (ca asti).
5. And that best of elephants is always unrivalled in battle. In war, his roar surpasses all other sounds. He is one who has accomplished great deeds and conquered all fatigue.
सहः शस्त्रनिपातानामग्निस्पर्शस्य चानघ ।
स पाण्डवबलं व्यक्तमद्यैको नाशयिष्यति ॥६॥
6. sahaḥ śastranipātānāmagnisparśasya cānagha ,
sa pāṇḍavabalaṁ vyaktamadyaiko nāśayiṣyati.
6. sahaḥ śastranipātānām agnisparśasya ca anagha
saḥ pāṇḍavabalam vyaktam adya ekaḥ nāśayiṣyati
6. (O) anagha,
saḥ śastranipātānām ca agnisparśasya (ca) sahaḥ (asti).
adya ekaḥ saḥ vyaktam pāṇḍavabalam nāśayiṣyati.
6. O sinless one (anagha), he is capable of enduring the impact of weapons and the touch of fire. Certainly, he alone will destroy the Pandava army today.
न चावाभ्यामृतेऽन्योऽस्ति शक्तस्तं प्रतिबाधितुम् ।
त्वरमाणस्ततो याहि यतः प्राग्ज्योतिषाधिपः ॥७॥
7. na cāvābhyāmṛte'nyo'sti śaktastaṁ pratibādhitum ,
tvaramāṇastato yāhi yataḥ prāgjyotiṣādhipaḥ.
7. na ca āvābhyām ṛte anyaḥ asti śaktaḥ tam pratibādhitum
tvaramāṇaḥ tataḥ yāhi yataḥ prāgjyotiṣa-adhipaḥ
7. āvābhyām ṛte anyaḥ tam pratibādhitum śaktaḥ na ca
asti tataḥ tvaramāṇaḥ yataḥ prāgjyotiṣa-adhipaḥ yāhi
7. There is no one else apart from us two who is capable of obstructing him. Therefore, go quickly to where the lord of Pragjyotisha is.
शक्रसख्याद्द्विपबलैर्वयसा चापि विस्मितम् ।
अद्यैनं प्रेषयिष्यामि बलहन्तुः प्रियातिथिम् ॥८॥
8. śakrasakhyāddvipabalairvayasā cāpi vismitam ,
adyainaṁ preṣayiṣyāmi balahantuḥ priyātithim.
8. śakra-sakhyāt dvipa-balaiḥ vayasā ca api vismitam
adya enam preṣayiṣyāmi bala-hantuḥ priya-atithim
8. śakra-sakhyāt dvipa-balaiḥ vayasā ca api vismitam
enam adya bala-hantuḥ priya-atithim preṣayiṣyāmi
8. Though he is astonishing due to his friendship with Indra, his elephant forces, and even his age, today I will send him as a dear guest to Indra (the slayer of Bala).
वचनादथ कृष्णस्तु प्रययौ सव्यसाचिनः ।
दार्यते भगदत्तेन यत्र पाण्डववाहिनी ॥९॥
9. vacanādatha kṛṣṇastu prayayau savyasācinaḥ ,
dāryate bhagadattena yatra pāṇḍavavāhinī.
9. vacanāt atha kṛṣṇaḥ tu prayayau savyasācinaḥ
dāryate bhagadattena yatra pāṇḍava-vāhinī
9. atha savyasācinaḥ vacanāt kṛṣṇaḥ tu yatra

9. Then Krishna, at the behest of Savyasācin (Arjuna), went forth to where the Pandava army was being torn apart by Bhagadatta.
तं प्रयान्तं ततः पश्चादाह्वयन्तो महारथाः ।
संशप्तकाः समारोहन्सहस्राणि चतुर्दश ॥१०॥
10. taṁ prayāntaṁ tataḥ paścādāhvayanto mahārathāḥ ,
saṁśaptakāḥ samārohansahasrāṇi caturdaśa.
10. tam prayāntam tataḥ paścāt āhvayantaḥ mahārathāḥ
saṃśaptakāḥ samārohan sahasrāṇi caturdaśa
10. tataḥ tam prayāntam paścāt āhvayantaḥ caturdaśa
sahasrāṇi saṃśaptakāḥ mahārathāḥ samārohan
10. As he was departing, the great charioteers, fourteen thousand Saṃśaptakas, called out from behind and assailed him.
दशैव तु सहस्राणि त्रिगर्तानां नराधिप ।
चत्वारि तु सहस्राणि वासुदेवस्य येऽनुगाः ॥११॥
11. daśaiva tu sahasrāṇi trigartānāṁ narādhipa ,
catvāri tu sahasrāṇi vāsudevasya ye'nugāḥ.
11. daśa eva tu sahasrāṇi trigartānām narādhipa
catvāri tu sahasrāṇi vāsudevasya ye anugāḥ
11. narādhipa tu trigartānām daśa eva sahasrāṇi
tu ye vāsudevasya anugāḥ catvāri sahasrāṇi
11. O king, there were indeed ten thousand Trigartas, and also four thousand followers of Vāsudeva.
दार्यमाणां चमूं दृष्ट्वा भगदत्तेन मारिष ।
आहूयमानस्य च तैरभवद्धृदयं द्विधा ॥१२॥
12. dāryamāṇāṁ camūṁ dṛṣṭvā bhagadattena māriṣa ,
āhūyamānasya ca tairabhavaddhṛdayaṁ dvidhā.
12. dāryamāṇām camūm dṛṣṭvā bhagadattena māriṣa
āhūyamānasya ca taiḥ abhavat hṛdayam dvidhā
12. māriṣa bhagadattena dāryamāṇām camūm dṛṣṭvā
ca taiḥ āhūyamānasya hṛdayam dvidhā abhavat
12. O respected one, seeing his army being torn apart by Bhagadatta, and as he was being called upon by his soldiers, his heart became divided.
किं नु श्रेयस्करं कर्म भवेदिति विचिन्तयन् ।
इतो वा विनिवर्तेयं गच्छेयं वा युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१३॥
13. kiṁ nu śreyaskaraṁ karma bhavediti vicintayan ,
ito vā vinivarteyaṁ gaccheyaṁ vā yudhiṣṭhiram.
13. kim nu śreyaskaram karma bhavet iti vicintayan
itaḥ vā vinivarteyam gaccheyam vā yudhiṣṭhiram
13. vicintayan kim nu śreyaskaram karma bhavet iti
itaḥ vā vinivarteyam vā yudhiṣṭhiram gaccheyam
13. Pondering, 'What action (karma) would be more beneficial? Should I turn back from here, or should I go to Yudhiṣṭhira?'
तस्य बुद्ध्या विचार्यैतदर्जुनस्य कुरूद्वह ।
अभवद्भूयसी बुद्धिः संशप्तकवधे स्थिरा ॥१४॥
14. tasya buddhyā vicāryaitadarjunasya kurūdvaha ,
abhavadbhūyasī buddhiḥ saṁśaptakavadhe sthirā.
14. tasya buddhyā vicārya etat arjunasya kurūdvaha
abhavat bhūyasī buddhiḥ saṃśaptakavadhe sthirā
14. kurūdvaha tasya arjunasya buddhyā etat vicārya
buddhiḥ saṃśaptakavadhe bhūyasī sthirā abhavat
14. O upholder of the Kurus, having thoroughly considered this with his intellect, Arjuna's resolve became greatly firm in the slaying of the Saṃśaptakas.
स संनिवृत्तः सहसा कपिप्रवरकेतनः ।
एको रथसहस्राणि निहन्तुं वासवी रणे ॥१५॥
15. sa saṁnivṛttaḥ sahasā kapipravaraketanaḥ ,
eko rathasahasrāṇi nihantuṁ vāsavī raṇe.
15. saḥ saṃnivṛttaḥ sahasā kapipravaraketanaḥ
ekaḥ rathasahasrāṇi nihantum vāsavī raṇe
15. vāsavī kapipravaraketanaḥ saḥ sahasā
saṃnivṛttaḥ ekaḥ raṇe rathasahasrāṇi nihantum
15. Arjuna, the son of Indra (Vāsavī), whose banner was marked by the foremost of monkeys, suddenly turned back alone to destroy thousands of chariots in battle.
सा हि दुर्योधनस्यासीन्मतिः कर्णस्य चोभयोः ।
अर्जुनस्य वधोपाये तेन द्वैधमकल्पयत् ॥१६॥
16. sā hi duryodhanasyāsīnmatiḥ karṇasya cobhayoḥ ,
arjunasya vadhopāye tena dvaidhamakalpayat.
16. sā hi duryodhanasya āsīt matiḥ karṇasya ca ubhayoḥ
arjunasya vadhopāye tena dvaidham akalpayat
16. hi sā matiḥ duryodhanasya karṇasya ca ubhayoḥ
āsīt arjunasya vadhopāye tena dvaidham akalpayat
16. Indeed, that was the intention of both Duryodhana and Karṇa: a strategy for the killing of Arjuna. Therefore, he (Arjuna) created a two-fold situation (dvaidha) or dilemma.
स तु संवर्तयामास द्वैधीभावेन पाण्डवः ।
रथेन तु रथाग्र्याणामकरोत्तां मृषा तदा ॥१७॥
17. sa tu saṁvartayāmāsa dvaidhībhāvena pāṇḍavaḥ ,
rathena tu rathāgryāṇāmakarottāṁ mṛṣā tadā.
17. saḥ tu saṃvartayāmāsa dvaidhībhāvena pāṇḍavaḥ
rathena tu rathāgryāṇām akarot tām mṛṣā tadā
17. tu saḥ pāṇḍavaḥ dvaidhībhāvena saṃvartayāmāsa
tadā tu rathena rathāgryāṇām tām mṛṣā akarot
17. But that Pāṇḍava, Arjuna, by creating a duality (dvaidhībhāva), managed the situation; then, with his chariot, he rendered that (enemy's strategy) futile for the foremost of chariot warriors.
ततः शतसहस्राणि शराणां नतपर्वणाम् ।
व्यसृजन्नर्जुने राजन्संशप्तकमहारथाः ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām ,
vyasṛjannarjune rājansaṁśaptakamahārathāḥ.
18. tataḥ śatasahasrāṇi śarāṇām nataparvaṇām
vyasṛjan arjune rājan saṃśaptakamahārathāḥ
18. rājan tataḥ saṃśaptakamahārathāḥ nataparvaṇām
śarāṇām śatasahasrāṇi arjune vyasṛjan
18. Then, O King, the great charioteers of the Saṃśaptakas released hundreds of thousands of arrows, with well-formed shafts, upon Arjuna.
नैव कुन्तीसुतः पार्थो नैव कृष्णो जनार्दनः ।
न हया न रथो राजन्दृश्यन्ते स्म शरैश्चिताः ॥१९॥
19. naiva kuntīsutaḥ pārtho naiva kṛṣṇo janārdanaḥ ,
na hayā na ratho rājandṛśyante sma śaraiścitāḥ.
19. na eva kuntīsutaḥ pārthaḥ na eva kṛṣṇaḥ janārdanaḥ
na hayāḥ na rathaḥ rājan dṛśyante sma śaraiḥ citāḥ
19. rājan,
kuntīsutaḥ pārthaḥ na eva,
kṛṣṇaḥ janārdanaḥ na eva,
hayāḥ na,
rathaḥ na,
śaraiḥ citāḥ sma dṛśyante.
19. O King, neither Pārtha, Kuntī's son, nor Kṛṣṇa, Janārdana, nor horses, nor chariots were seen, covered as they were with arrows.
यदा मोहमनुप्राप्तः सस्वेदश्च जनार्दनः ।
ततस्तान्प्रायशः पार्थो वज्रास्त्रेण निजघ्निवान् ॥२०॥
20. yadā mohamanuprāptaḥ sasvedaśca janārdanaḥ ,
tatastānprāyaśaḥ pārtho vajrāstreṇa nijaghnivān.
20. yadā moham anuprāptaḥ sasvedaḥ ca janārdanaḥ tataḥ
tān prāyaśaḥ pārthaḥ vajrāstreṇa nijaghnnivān
20. yadā janārdanaḥ moham anuprāptaḥ ca sasvedaḥ,
tataḥ pārthaḥ prāyaśaḥ tān vajrāstreṇa nijaghnnivān.
20. When Janārdana became bewildered and perspired, then Pārtha mostly struck them down using a thunderbolt-weapon.
शतशः पाणयश्छिन्नाः सेषुज्यातलकार्मुकाः ।
केतवो वाजिनः सूता रथिनश्चापतन्क्षितौ ॥२१॥
21. śataśaḥ pāṇayaśchinnāḥ seṣujyātalakārmukāḥ ,
ketavo vājinaḥ sūtā rathinaścāpatankṣitau.
21. śataśaḥ pāṇayaḥ chinnāḥ seṣujyātalakārmukāḥ
ketavaḥ vājinaḥ sūtāḥ rathinaḥ ca apatan kṣitau
21. śataśaḥ seṣujyātalakārmukāḥ pāṇayaḥ chinnāḥ.

sūtāḥ ca rathinaḥ kṣitau apatan.
21. Hundreds of hands, along with their arrows, bowstrings, bow-guards, and bows, were severed. Banners, horses, charioteers, and warriors fell to the ground.
द्रुमाचलाग्राम्बुधरैः समरूपाः सुकल्पिताः ।
हतारोहाः क्षितौ पेतुर्द्विपाः पार्थशराहताः ॥२२॥
22. drumācalāgrāmbudharaiḥ samarūpāḥ sukalpitāḥ ,
hatārohāḥ kṣitau peturdvipāḥ pārthaśarāhatāḥ.
22. drumācalāgrāmbudharaiḥ samarūpāḥ sukalpitāḥ
hatārohāḥ kṣitau petuḥ dvipāḥ pārthaśarāhatāḥ

22. Elephants, which were well-adorned and resembled trees, mountain peaks, and clouds, fell to the ground, their riders killed and themselves struck by Pārtha's arrows.
विप्रविद्धकुथावल्गाश्छिन्नभाण्डाः परासवः ।
सारोहास्तुरगाः पेतुर्मथिताः पार्थमार्गणैः ॥२३॥
23. vipraviddhakuthāvalgāśchinnabhāṇḍāḥ parāsavaḥ ,
sārohāsturagāḥ peturmathitāḥ pārthamārgaṇaiḥ.
23. vipraviddhakuthāvalgāḥ chinnabhāṇḍāḥ parāsavaḥ
sārohāḥ turagāḥ petuḥ mathitāḥ pārthamārgaṇaiḥ

23. The horses, with their saddlecloths and reins thrown off and their equipment shattered, fell lifeless along with their riders, having been struck down by Arjuna's arrows.
सर्ष्टिचर्मासिनखराः समुद्गरपरश्वधाः ।
संछिन्ना बाहवः पेतुर्नृणां भल्लैः किरीटिना ॥२४॥
24. sarṣṭicarmāsinakharāḥ samudgaraparaśvadhāḥ ,
saṁchinnā bāhavaḥ peturnṛṇāṁ bhallaiḥ kirīṭinā.
24. sarṣṭicarmāsinakharāḥ samudgaraparaśvadhāḥ
saṃchinnāḥ bāhavaḥ petuḥ nṛṇām bhallaiḥ kirīṭinā

24. The severed arms of men, complete with spears, shields, swords, and daggers, and accompanied by maces and axes, fell, having been cut off by Arjuna (kirīṭin) with his lances.
बालादित्याम्बुजेन्दूनां तुल्यरूपाणि मारिष ।
संछिन्नान्यर्जुनशरैः शिरांस्युर्वीं प्रपेदिरे ॥२५॥
25. bālādityāmbujendūnāṁ tulyarūpāṇi māriṣa ,
saṁchinnānyarjunaśaraiḥ śirāṁsyurvīṁ prapedire.
25. bālādityāmbujendūnām tulyarūpāṇi māriṣa
saṃchinnāni arjunaśaraiḥ śirāṃsi urvīm prapedire
25. māriṣa bālādityāmbujendūnām tulyarūpāṇi
saṃchinnāni śirāṃsi arjunaśaraiḥ urvīm prapedire
25. O respected one, heads, whose appearance was like that of the rising sun, lotuses, and moons, fell to the earth, having been severed by Arjuna's arrows.
जज्वालालंकृतैः सेना पत्रिभिः प्राणभोजनैः ।
नानालिङ्गैस्तदामित्रान्क्रुद्धे निघ्नति फल्गुने ॥२६॥
26. jajvālālaṁkṛtaiḥ senā patribhiḥ prāṇabhojanaiḥ ,
nānāliṅgaistadāmitrānkruddhe nighnati phalgune.
26. jajjvāla alaṃkṛtaiḥ senā patribhiḥ prāṇabhojanaiḥ
nānāliṅgaiḥ tadā amitrān kruddhe nighnati phalgune
26. tadā kruddhe phalgune amitrān nighnati (sati) senā
nānāliṅgaiḥ alaṃkṛtaiḥ prāṇabhojanaiḥ patribhiḥ jajjvāla
26. Then, when Phalguna (Arjuna), enraged, was slaying the enemies, the army blazed with arrows that were adorned with various marks and consumed lives.
क्षोभयन्तं तदा सेनां द्विरदं नलिनीमिव ।
धनंजयं भूतगणाः साधु साध्वित्यपूजयन् ॥२७॥
27. kṣobhayantaṁ tadā senāṁ dviradaṁ nalinīmiva ,
dhanaṁjayaṁ bhūtagaṇāḥ sādhu sādhvityapūjayan.
27. kṣobhayantam tadā senām dviradam nalinīm iva
dhanaṃjayam bhūtaganāḥ sādhu sādhu iti apūjayan
27. tadā dhanaṃjayam senām dviradam nalinīm iva
kṣobhayantam bhūtaganāḥ sādhu sādhu iti apūjayan
27. Then, the hosts of beings praised Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) with 'excellent, excellent!' as he agitated the army just as an elephant agitates a lotus pond.
दृष्ट्वा तत्कर्म पार्थस्य वासवस्येव माधवः ।
विस्मयं परमं गत्वा तलमाहत्य पूजयत् ॥२८॥
28. dṛṣṭvā tatkarma pārthasya vāsavasyeva mādhavaḥ ,
vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatvā talamāhatya pūjayat.
28. dṛṣṭvā tat karma pārthasya vāsavasya iva mādhavaḥ
vismayam paramam gatvā talam āhatya pūjayat
28. mādhavaḥ pārthasya tat karma vāsavasya iva dṛṣṭvā,
paramam vismayam gatvā,
talam āhatya pūjayat
28. Upon seeing that deed of Pārtha (Arjuna), Mādhava (Krishna), like Vāsava (Indra), felt supreme wonder and praised him by clapping his hands.
ततः संशप्तकान्हत्वा भूयिष्ठं ये व्यवस्थिताः ।
भगदत्ताय याहीति पार्थः कृष्णमचोदयत् ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ saṁśaptakānhatvā bhūyiṣṭhaṁ ye vyavasthitāḥ ,
bhagadattāya yāhīti pārthaḥ kṛṣṇamacodayat.
29. tataḥ saṃśaptakān hatvā bhūyiṣṭham ye vyavasthitāḥ
bhagadattāya yāhi iti pārthaḥ kṛṣṇam acodayat
29. tataḥ ye bhūyiṣṭham vyavasthitāḥ saṃśaptakān hatvā,
pārthaḥ kṛṣṇam bhagadattāya yāhi iti acodayat
29. Then, after having slain most of the Saṃśaptakas who were arrayed (against him), Pārtha (Arjuna) urged Krishna, saying, 'Proceed towards Bhagadatta!'
