गालव उवाच ।
गरुत्मन्भुजगेन्द्रारे सुपर्ण विनतात्मज ।
नय मां तार्क्ष्य पूर्वेण यत्र धर्मस्य चक्षुषी ॥१॥
1. gālava uvāca ,
garutmanbhujagendrāre suparṇa vinatātmaja ,
naya māṁ tārkṣya pūrveṇa yatra dharmasya cakṣuṣī.

naya mām tārkṣya pūrveṇa yatra dharmasya cakṣuṣī
1. Gālava said, "O winged one, O enemy of the lord of serpents, O beautiful-winged one, O son of Vinatā, O Tārkṣya, lead me eastward to where the two eyes of natural law (dharma) are."
पूर्वमेतां दिशं गच्छ या पूर्वं परिकीर्तिता ।
दैवतानां हि सांनिध्यमत्र कीर्तितवानसि ॥२॥
2. pūrvametāṁ diśaṁ gaccha yā pūrvaṁ parikīrtitā ,
daivatānāṁ hi sāṁnidhyamatra kīrtitavānasi.
2. pūrvam etām diśam gaccha yā pūrvam parikīrtitā
devatānām hi sāṃnidhyam atra kīrtitavān asi
2. "First, go in this direction, which was previously described. Indeed, you have mentioned the presence of the deities here."
अत्र सत्यं च धर्मश्च त्वया सम्यक्प्रकीर्तितः ।
इच्छेयं तु समागन्तुं समस्तैर्दैवतैरहम् ।
भूयश्च तान्सुरान्द्रष्टुमिच्छेयमरुणानुज ॥३॥
3. atra satyaṁ ca dharmaśca tvayā samyakprakīrtitaḥ ,
iccheyaṁ tu samāgantuṁ samastairdaivatairaham ,
bhūyaśca tānsurāndraṣṭumiccheyamaruṇānuja.
3. atra satyam ca dharmaḥ ca tvayā
samyakprakīrtitaḥ iccheyam tu samāgantum
samastaiḥ devataiḥ aham bhūyaḥ ca
tān surān draṣṭum iccheyam aruṇānuja
3. "Here, both truth and natural law (dharma) have been well-proclaimed by you. Indeed, I wish to meet with all the deities, and, O younger brother of Aruṇa, I wish to see those gods again."
नारद उवाच ।
तमाह विनतासूनुरारोहस्वेति वै द्विजम् ।
आरुरोहाथ स मुनिर्गरुडं गालवस्तदा ॥४॥
4. nārada uvāca ,
tamāha vinatāsūnurārohasveti vai dvijam ,
ārurohātha sa munirgaruḍaṁ gālavastadā.
4. nārada uvāca tam āha vinatāsūnuḥ ārohasva iti vai
dvijam āruroha atha sa muniḥ garuḍam gālavaḥ tadā
4. Nārada said, "The son of Vinatā (Garuda) indeed said to that twice-born (Gālava), 'Ascend!' Then, at that time, that sage Gālava ascended onto Garuda."
गालव उवाच ।
क्रममाणस्य ते रूपं दृश्यते पन्नगाशन ।
भास्करस्येव पूर्वाह्णे सहस्रांशोर्विवस्वतः ॥५॥
5. gālava uvāca ,
kramamāṇasya te rūpaṁ dṛśyate pannagāśana ,
bhāskarasyeva pūrvāhṇe sahasrāṁśorvivasvataḥ.
5. gālava uvāca kramamāṇasya te rūpaṃ dṛśyate pannagāśana
bhāskarasya iva pūrvāhṇe sahasrāṃśoḥ vivasvataḥ
5. Galava said: O devourer of serpents, as you move, your form appears like the thousand-rayed sun, Vivasyat, in the forenoon.
पक्षवातप्रणुन्नानां वृक्षाणामनुगामिनाम् ।
प्रस्थितानामिव समं पश्यामीह गतिं खग ॥६॥
6. pakṣavātapraṇunnānāṁ vṛkṣāṇāmanugāminām ,
prasthitānāmiva samaṁ paśyāmīha gatiṁ khaga.
6. pakṣavātaprṇunnānām vṛkṣāṇām anugāminām
prasthitānām iva samaṃ paśyāmi iha gatiṃ khaga
6. O bird, I observe here the movement of trees, driven by the wind from your wings, as if they are following you, all moving forward simultaneously.
ससागरवनामुर्वीं सशैलवनकाननाम् ।
आकर्षन्निव चाभासि पक्षवातेन खेचर ॥७॥
7. sasāgaravanāmurvīṁ saśailavanakānanām ,
ākarṣanniva cābhāsi pakṣavātena khecara.
7. sasāgaravanām urvīṃ saśailavanakānanām
ākarṣan iva ca ābhāsi pakṣavātena khecara
7. And O sky-goer, you appear to be dragging the earth with its oceans, forests, mountains, and groves, by means of the wind from your wings.
समीननागनक्रं च खमिवारोप्यते जलम् ।
वायुना चैव महता पक्षवातेन चानिशम् ॥८॥
8. samīnanāganakraṁ ca khamivāropyate jalam ,
vāyunā caiva mahatā pakṣavātena cāniśam.
8. samīnanāganakraṃ ca kham iva āropyate jalam
vāyunā ca eva mahatā pakṣavātena ca aniśam
8. And ceaselessly, the water, along with its fish, serpents, and crocodiles, is being lifted as if into the sky by the mighty wind and by the wind from your wings.
तुल्यरूपाननान्मत्स्यांस्तिमिमत्स्यांस्तिमिंगिलान् ।
नागांश्च नरवक्त्रांश्च पश्याम्युन्मथितानिव ॥९॥
9. tulyarūpānanānmatsyāṁstimimatsyāṁstimiṁgilān ,
nāgāṁśca naravaktrāṁśca paśyāmyunmathitāniva.
9. tulyarūpānanān matsyān timimatsyān timingilān
nāgān ca naravaktrān ca paśyāmi unmathitān iva
9. I see fish with faces of similar form, along with "timi" fish, "timingila" fish, and "nāgas" with human faces, all appearing as if churned and tormented.
महार्णवस्य च रवैः श्रोत्रे मे बधिरीकृते ।
न शृणोमि न पश्यामि नात्मनो वेद्मि कारणम् ॥१०॥
10. mahārṇavasya ca ravaiḥ śrotre me badhirīkṛte ,
na śṛṇomi na paśyāmi nātmano vedmi kāraṇam.
10. mahārṇavasya ca ravaiḥ śrotre me badhirīkṛte
na śṛṇomi na paśyāmi na ātmanaḥ vedmi kāraṇam
10. And my ears have been deafened by the roars of the great ocean. I neither hear nor see, nor do I know the reason for my own condition (ātman).
शनैः साधु भवान्यातु ब्रह्महत्यामनुस्मरन् ।
न दृश्यते रविस्तात न दिशो न च खं खग ॥११॥
11. śanaiḥ sādhu bhavānyātu brahmahatyāmanusmaran ,
na dṛśyate ravistāta na diśo na ca khaṁ khaga.
11. śanaiḥ sādhu bhavān yātu brahmahatyām anusmaran
na dṛśyate raviḥ tāta na diśaḥ na ca kham khaga
11. O dear one, you should indeed go slowly, remembering the (sin of) killing a Brahmin (brahmahatyā). O bird, neither the sun nor the directions nor the sky are visible.
तम एव तु पश्यामि शरीरं ते न लक्षये ।
मणीव जात्यौ पश्यामि चक्षुषी तेऽहमण्डज ॥१२॥
12. tama eva tu paśyāmi śarīraṁ te na lakṣaye ,
maṇīva jātyau paśyāmi cakṣuṣī te'hamaṇḍaja.
12. tamaḥ eva tu paśyāmi śarīram te na lakṣaye
maṇī iva jātyau paśyāmi cakṣuṣī te aham aṇḍaja
12. But I only see darkness; I do not perceive your body. O egg-born one, I (only) see your two excellent eyes, like (two) gems.
शरीरे तु न पश्यामि तव चैवात्मनश्च ह ।
पदे पदे तु पश्यामि सलिलादग्निमुत्थितम् ॥१३॥
13. śarīre tu na paśyāmi tava caivātmanaśca ha ,
pade pade tu paśyāmi salilādagnimutthitam.
13. śarīre tu na paśyāmi tava ca eva ātmanaḥ ca ha
| pade pade tu paśyāmi salilāt agnim utthitam
13. However, I do not see it in your body, nor in your self (ātman). But step by step, I observe fire arising from water.
स मे निर्वाप्य सहसा चक्षुषी शाम्यते पुनः ।
तन्निवर्त महान्कालो गच्छतो विनतात्मज ॥१४॥
14. sa me nirvāpya sahasā cakṣuṣī śāmyate punaḥ ,
tannivarta mahānkālo gacchato vinatātmaja.
14. sa me nirvāpya sahasā cakṣuṣī śāmyate punaḥ |
tat nivarta mahān kālaḥ gacchataḥ vinatā-ātma-ja
14. That (fire), having instantly extinguished my two eyes, again becomes calm. Therefore, turn back, great one, for it is a long time (kāla) since you departed, O son of Vinatā!
न मे प्रयोजनं किंचिद्गमने पन्नगाशन ।
संनिवर्त महावेग न वेगं विषहामि ते ॥१५॥
15. na me prayojanaṁ kiṁcidgamane pannagāśana ,
saṁnivarta mahāvega na vegaṁ viṣahāmi te.
15. na me prayojanam kiñcit gamane pannaga-aśana
| samnivarta mahā-vega na vegam viṣahāmi te
15. I have no purpose whatsoever in going, O eater of serpents! Turn back, O greatly swift one! I cannot withstand your speed.
गुरवे संश्रुतानीह शतान्यष्टौ हि वाजिनाम् ।
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां शुभ्राणां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ॥१६॥
16. gurave saṁśrutānīha śatānyaṣṭau hi vājinām ,
ekataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ śubhrāṇāṁ candravarcasām.
16. gurave saṃśrutāni iha śatāni aṣṭau hi vājinām |
ekataḥ śyāma-karṇānām śubhrāṇām candra-varcasām
16. Indeed, here, eight hundred horses have been promised to the teacher (guru), of which some have black ears, and others are brilliant like the moon.
तेषां चैवापवर्गाय मार्गं पश्यामि नाण्डज ।
ततोऽयं जीवितत्यागे दृष्टो मार्गो मयात्मनः ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṁ caivāpavargāya mārgaṁ paśyāmi nāṇḍaja ,
tato'yaṁ jīvitatyāge dṛṣṭo mārgo mayātmanaḥ.
17. teṣām ca eva apavargāya mārgam paśyāmi na aṇḍaja
tataḥ ayam jīvitatyāge dṛṣṭaḥ mārgaḥ mayā ātmanaḥ
17. O bird, I truly see no other path for their liberation (mokṣa). Therefore, this path of abandoning life has been found by me for my own (ātman) sake.
नैव मेऽस्ति धनं किंचिन्न धनेनान्वितः सुहृत् ।
न चार्थेनापि महता शक्यमेतद्व्यपोहितुम् ॥१८॥
18. naiva me'sti dhanaṁ kiṁcinna dhanenānvitaḥ suhṛt ,
na cārthenāpi mahatā śakyametadvyapohitum.
18. na eva me asti dhanam kiñcit na dhanena anvitaḥ
suhṛt na ca arthena api mahatā śakyam etat vyapohitum
18. I possess no wealth at all, nor do I have a friend who is endowed with wealth. And this situation cannot be averted even with great riches.
नारद उवाच ।
एवं बहु च दीनं च ब्रुवाणं गालवं तदा ।
प्रत्युवाच व्रजन्नेव प्रहसन्विनतात्मजः ॥१९॥
19. nārada uvāca ,
evaṁ bahu ca dīnaṁ ca bruvāṇaṁ gālavaṁ tadā ,
pratyuvāca vrajanneva prahasanvinatātmajaḥ.
19. nārada uvāca evam bahu ca dīnam ca bruvāṇam gālavam
tadā pratyuvāca vrajan eva prahasan vinatātmajaḥ
19. Nārada said: At that moment, as Gālava spoke at length and in a piteous manner, the son of Vinatā (Garuda) replied, smiling, even as he was departing.
नातिप्रज्ञोऽसि विप्रर्षे योऽऽत्मानं त्यक्तुमिच्छसि ।
न चापि कृत्रिमः कालः कालो हि परमेश्वरः ॥२०॥
20. nātiprajño'si viprarṣe yo''tmānaṁ tyaktumicchasi ,
na cāpi kṛtrimaḥ kālaḥ kālo hi parameśvaraḥ.
20. na atiprajñaḥ asi viprarṣe yaḥ ātmānam tyaktum
icchasi na ca api kṛtrimaḥ kālaḥ kālaḥ hi parameśvaraḥ
20. O Brahmin sage, you are not truly wise if you wish to abandon your self (ātman). Time (kāla) is not artificial; for Time (kāla) is indeed the Supreme Lord (parameśvara).
किमहं पूर्वमेवेह भवता नाभिचोदितः ।
उपायोऽत्र महानस्ति येनैतदुपपद्यते ॥२१॥
21. kimahaṁ pūrvameveha bhavatā nābhicoditaḥ ,
upāyo'tra mahānasti yenaitadupapadyate.
21. kim aham pūrvam eva iha bhavatā na abhicoditaḥ
upāyaḥ atra mahān asti yena etat upapadyate
21. Why was I not urged by you about this before, right here? There is a great method available here by which this can be accomplished.
तदेष ऋषभो नाम पर्वतः सागरोरसि ।
अत्र विश्रम्य भुक्त्वा च निवर्तिष्याव गालव ॥२२॥
22. tadeṣa ṛṣabho nāma parvataḥ sāgarorasi ,
atra viśramya bhuktvā ca nivartiṣyāva gālava.
22. tat eṣaḥ ṛṣabhaḥ nāma parvataḥ sāgara urasi
atra viśramya bhuktvā ca nivartiṣyāva gālava
22. Therefore, this mountain named Ṛṣabha is on the seashore. Here, having rested and partaken (of food), we two shall return, O Gālava.
