विपुलस्त्वकरोत्तीव्रं तपः कृत्वा गुरोर्वचः ।
तपोयुक्तमथात्मानममन्यत च वीर्यवान् ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: Vipula, having performed intense austerity (tapas) in accordance with his guru's instruction, then considered himself (ātman) to be powerful and endowed with such ascetic practice.
स तेन कर्मणा स्पर्धन्पृथिवीं पृथिवीपते ।
चचार गतभीः प्रीतो लब्धकीर्तिर्वरो नृषु ॥२॥
2. sa tena karmaṇā spardhanpṛthivīṁ pṛthivīpate ,
cacāra gatabhīḥ prīto labdhakīrtirvaro nṛṣu.
2. saḥ tena karmaṇā spardhan pṛthivīm pṛthivī-pate
cacāra gata-bhīḥ prītaḥ labdha-kīrtiḥ varaḥ nṛṣu

2. O lord of the earth, by that (karma), he, vying with the earth (in greatness), wandered fearless and pleased, having attained renown and being supreme among men.
उभौ लोकौ जितौ चापि तथैवामन्यत प्रभुः ।
कर्मणा तेन कौरव्य तपसा विपुलेन च ॥३॥
3. ubhau lokau jitau cāpi tathaivāmanyata prabhuḥ ,
karmaṇā tena kauravya tapasā vipulena ca.
3. ubhau lokau jitau ca api tathā eva amanyata
prabhuḥ karmaṇā tena kauravya tapasā vipulena ca

3. O descendant of Kuru, the powerful one (Vipula) likewise considered that both worlds were conquered by him through that action (karma) and by his immense austerity (tapas).
अथ काले व्यतिक्रान्ते कस्मिंश्चित्कुरुनन्दन ।
रुच्या भगिन्या दानं वै बभूव धनधान्यवत् ॥४॥
4. atha kāle vyatikrānte kasmiṁścitkurunandana ,
rucyā bhaginyā dānaṁ vai babhūva dhanadhānyavat.

4. Then, O delight of the Kurus, after some time had passed, the act of giving (dāna) performed by Ruchyā, the sister, became rich in wealth and grain.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु दिव्या काचिद्वराङ्गना ।
बिभ्रती परमं रूपं जगामाथ विहायसा ॥५॥
5. etasminneva kāle tu divyā kācidvarāṅganā ,
bibhratī paramaṁ rūpaṁ jagāmātha vihāyasā.
5. etasmin eva kāle tu divyā kācid varāṅganā
bibhratī paramaṃ rūpaṃ jagāma atha vihāyasā

5. Then, at that very time, a certain divine and exceptionally beautiful woman, bearing a supreme form (of beauty), traveled through the sky.
तस्याः शरीरात्पुष्पाणि पतितानि महीतले ।
तस्याश्रमस्याविदूरे दिव्यगन्धानि भारत ॥६॥
6. tasyāḥ śarīrātpuṣpāṇi patitāni mahītale ,
tasyāśramasyāvidūre divyagandhāni bhārata.

6. O Bhārata, divine-smelling flowers fell from her body onto the ground, not far from her hermitage.
तान्यगृह्णात्ततो राजन्रुचिर्नलिनलोचना ।
तदा निमन्त्रकस्तस्या अङ्गेभ्यः क्षिप्रमागमत् ॥७॥
7. tānyagṛhṇāttato rājanrucirnalinalocanā ,
tadā nimantrakastasyā aṅgebhyaḥ kṣipramāgamat.
7. tāni agṛhṇāt tataḥ rājan ruciḥ nalinalocanā tadā
nimantrakaḥ tasyāḥ aṅgebhyaḥ kṣipram āgamat
7. rājan tataḥ nalinalocanā ruciḥ tāni agṛhṇāt tadā

7. O king, then the lotus-eyed Ruci picked those flowers up. At that very moment, an inviter (or messenger) quickly emerged from her body.
तस्या हि भगिनी तात ज्येष्ठा नाम्ना प्रभावती ।
भार्या चित्ररथस्याथ बभूवाङ्गेश्वरस्य वै ॥८॥
8. tasyā hi bhaginī tāta jyeṣṭhā nāmnā prabhāvatī ,
bhāryā citrarathasyātha babhūvāṅgeśvarasya vai.
8. tasyaḥ hi bhaginī tāta jyeṣṭhā nāmnā prabhāvatī
bhāryā citrarathasya atha babhūva aṅgeśvarasya vai
8. tāta tasyaḥ hi jyeṣṭhā bhaginī nāmnā prabhāvatī

8. Indeed, her elder sister, named Prabhāvatī, then became the wife of Citraratha, the king of Aṅga, O dear one.
पिनह्य तानि पुष्पाणि केशेषु वरवर्णिनी ।
आमन्त्रिता ततोऽगच्छद्रुचिरङ्गपतेर्गृहान् ॥९॥
9. pinahya tāni puṣpāṇi keśeṣu varavarṇinī ,
āmantritā tato'gacchadruciraṅgapatergṛhān.
9. pinahya tāni puṣpāṇi keśeṣu varavarṇinī
āmantritā tataḥ agacchat ruciḥ aṅgapateḥ gṛhān
9. varavarṇinī keśeṣu tāni puṣpāṇi pinahya

9. The beautiful woman, having adorned those flowers in her hair, then, being invited, went to the residence of Ruci, the lord of Aṅga.
पुष्पाणि तानि दृष्ट्वाथ तदाङ्गेन्द्रवराङ्गना ।
भगिनीं चोदयामास पुष्पार्थे चारुलोचना ॥१०॥
10. puṣpāṇi tāni dṛṣṭvātha tadāṅgendravarāṅganā ,
bhaginīṁ codayāmāsa puṣpārthe cārulocanā.
10. puṣpāṇi tāni dṛṣṭvā atha tadā aṅgendravarāṅganā
bhaginīm codayāmāsa puṣpārthe cārulocanā

10. Then, having seen those flowers, the king of Aṅga's beautiful wife, whose eyes were charming, urged her sister to get flowers.
सा भर्त्रे सर्वमाचष्ट रुचिः सुरुचिरानना ।
भगिन्या भाषितं सर्वमृषिस्तच्चाभ्यनन्दत ॥११॥
11. sā bhartre sarvamācaṣṭa ruciḥ surucirānanā ,
bhaginyā bhāṣitaṁ sarvamṛṣistaccābhyanandata.
11. sā bhartre sarvam ācaṣṭa ruciḥ surucirānanā
bhaginyā bhāṣitam sarvam ṛṣiḥ tat ca abhyanandata
11. sā ruciḥ surucirānanā bhartre sarvam ācaṣṭa ca
ṛṣiḥ bhaginyā bhāṣitam sarvam tat abhyanandata
11. She, with her radiance and very beautiful face, told everything to her husband. And the (ṛṣi) sage approved of all that had been spoken by the sister.
ततो विपुलमानाय्य देवशर्मा महातपाः ।
पुष्पार्थे चोदयामास गच्छ गच्छेति भारत ॥१२॥
12. tato vipulamānāyya devaśarmā mahātapāḥ ,
puṣpārthe codayāmāsa gaccha gaccheti bhārata.
12. tataḥ vipulam ānāyya devaśarmā mahātapāḥ
puṣpārthe codayām āsa gaccha gaccha iti bhārata
12. tataḥ mahātapāḥ devaśarmā vipulam ānāyya
puṣpārthe gaccha gaccha iti codayām āsa bhārata
12. Then, the greatly austere Devaśarman, having summoned Vipula, sent him to fetch flowers, repeatedly saying, 'Go, go!' O Bhārata.
विपुलस्तु गुरोर्वाक्यमविचार्य महातपाः ।
स तथेत्यब्रवीद्राजंस्तं च देशं जगाम ह ॥१३॥
13. vipulastu gurorvākyamavicārya mahātapāḥ ,
sa tathetyabravīdrājaṁstaṁ ca deśaṁ jagāma ha.
13. vipulaḥ tu guroḥ vākyam avicārya mahātapāḥ saḥ
tathā iti abravīt rājan tam ca deśam jagāma ha
13. tu mahātapāḥ vipulaḥ guroḥ vākyam avicārya saḥ
tathā iti abravīt rājan ca tam deśam jagāma ha
13. But Vipula, the greatly austere one, without fully considering his preceptor's (guru) command, said, 'So be it,' O king, and indeed went to that region.
यस्मिन्देशे तु तान्यासन्पतितानि नभस्तलात् ।
अम्लानान्यपि तत्रासन्कुसुमान्यपराण्यपि ॥१४॥
14. yasmindeśe tu tānyāsanpatitāni nabhastalāt ,
amlānānyapi tatrāsankusumānyaparāṇyapi.
14. yasmin deśe tu tāni āsan patitāni nabhas talāt
amlānāni api tatra āsan kusumāni aparāṇi api
14. tu yasmin deśe nabhas talāt patitāni tāni āsan,
tatra amlānāni aparāṇi kusumāni api āsan
14. In that region where those flowers had fallen from the sky, there were also other fresh, unfaded blossoms.
ततः स तानि जग्राह दिव्यानि रुचिराणि च ।
प्राप्तानि स्वेन तपसा दिव्यगन्धानि भारत ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa tāni jagrāha divyāni rucirāṇi ca ,
prāptāni svena tapasā divyagandhāni bhārata.
15. tataḥ saḥ tāni jagrāha divyāni rucirāṇi ca
prāptāni svena tapasā divyagandhāni bhārata
15. tataḥ bhārata saḥ divyāni rucirāṇi ca
divyagandhāni svena tapasā prāptāni tāni jagrāha
15. Then, O Bhārata, he collected those divine and charming flowers, which were divinely fragrant and had been obtained through his own ascetic practice (tapas).
संप्राप्य तानि प्रीतात्मा गुरोर्वचनकारकः ।
ततो जगाम तूर्णं च चम्पां चम्पकमालिनीम् ॥१६॥
16. saṁprāpya tāni prītātmā gurorvacanakārakaḥ ,
tato jagāma tūrṇaṁ ca campāṁ campakamālinīm.
16. samprāpya tāni prītātmā guroḥ vacanakārakaḥ
tataḥ jagāma tūrṇam ca campām campakamālinīm
16. tāni samprāpya prītātmā guroḥ vacanakārakaḥ
tataḥ tūrṇam ca campām campakamālinīm jagāma
16. Having received those, joyful in spirit (ātman) and obedient to his guru's words, he then quickly went to Campā, a city adorned with Campaka flowers.
स वने विजने तात ददर्श मिथुनं नृणाम् ।
चक्रवत्परिवर्तन्तं गृहीत्वा पाणिना करम् ॥१७॥
17. sa vane vijane tāta dadarśa mithunaṁ nṛṇām ,
cakravatparivartantaṁ gṛhītvā pāṇinā karam.
17. sa vane vijane tāta dadarśa mithunam nṛṇām
cakravat parivartantam gṛhītvā pāṇinā karam
17. saḥ tāta vijane vane nṛṇām mithunam cakravat
pāṇinā karam gṛhītvā parivartantam dadarśa
17. In that solitary forest, O dear one, he saw a pair of men revolving like a wheel, holding each other's hands.
तत्रैकस्तूर्णमगमत्तत्पदे परिवर्तयन् ।
एकस्तु न तथा राजंश्चक्रतुः कलहं ततः ॥१८॥
18. tatraikastūrṇamagamattatpade parivartayan ,
ekastu na tathā rājaṁścakratuḥ kalahaṁ tataḥ.
18. tatra ekaḥ tūrṇam agamat tatpade parivartayan
ekaḥ tu na tathā rājan cakratuḥ kalaham tataḥ
18. tatra ekaḥ tatpade parivartayan tūrṇam agamat tu aparaḥ
(ekaḥ) tathā na (agamat) rājan tataḥ kalaham cakratuḥ
18. Among them, one quickly proceeded, following in the other's footsteps. But the second, O king, did not do so, and consequently, they began to quarrel.
त्वं शीघ्रं गच्छसीत्येकोऽब्रवीन्नेति तथापरः ।
नेति नेति च तौ तात परस्परमथोचतुः ॥१९॥
19. tvaṁ śīghraṁ gacchasītyeko'bravīnneti tathāparaḥ ,
neti neti ca tau tāta parasparamathocatuḥ.
19. tvam śīghram gacchasi iti ekaḥ abravīt na iti tathā
aparaḥ na iti na iti ca tau tāta parasparam atha ūcatuḥ
19. ekaḥ tvam śīghram gacchasi iti abravīt aparaḥ tu na iti
tathā ca tāta tau atha parasparam na iti na iti ūcatuḥ
19. One of them said, 'You go quickly!' But the other responded, 'Not so!' And, O dear one, those two then repeatedly said to each other, 'No! No!'
तयोर्विस्पर्धतोरेवं शपथोऽयमभूत्तदा ।
मनसोद्दिश्य विपुलं ततो वाक्यमथोचतुः ॥२०॥
20. tayorvispardhatorevaṁ śapatho'yamabhūttadā ,
manasoddiśya vipulaṁ tato vākyamathocatuḥ.
20. tayoḥ vispardhatoḥ evam śapathaḥ ayam abhūt tadā
manasā uddiśya vipulam tataḥ vākyam atha ucatuḥ
20. tayoḥ vispardhatoḥ evam ayam śapathaḥ tadā abhūt.
tataḥ manasā vipulam uddiśya atha vākyam ūcatuḥ.
20. As those two were thus competing, this oath was then made. Then, mentally addressing Vipula, they both uttered this statement.
आवयोरनृतं प्राह यस्तस्याथ द्विजस्य वै ।
विपुलस्य परे लोके या गतिः सा भवेदिति ॥२१॥
21. āvayoranṛtaṁ prāha yastasyātha dvijasya vai ,
vipulasya pare loke yā gatiḥ sā bhavediti.
21. āvayoḥ anṛtam prāha yaḥ tasya atha dvijasya
vai vipulasya pare loke yā gatiḥ sā bhavet iti
21. yaḥ āvayoḥ anṛtam prāha,
tasya atha dvijasya vai yā vipulasya pare loke gatiḥ sā bhavet iti.
21. Whoever speaks a falsehood concerning us two, may that brahmin's ultimate destination (gati) in the other world be the same as Vipula's.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विपुलो विषण्णवदनोऽभवत् ।
एवं तीव्रतपाश्चाहं कष्टश्चायं परिग्रहः ॥२२॥
22. etacchrutvā tu vipulo viṣaṇṇavadano'bhavat ,
evaṁ tīvratapāścāhaṁ kaṣṭaścāyaṁ parigrahaḥ.
22. etat śrutvā tu vipulaḥ viṣaṇṇavadanaḥ abhūt evam
tīvratapāḥ ca aham kaṣṭaḥ ca ayam parigrahaḥ
22. etat śrutvā tu vipulaḥ viṣaṇṇavadanaḥ abhūt.
evam aham tīvratapāḥ ca,
ayam parigrahaḥ ca kaṣṭaḥ.
22. Upon hearing this, Vipula's face became dejected. (He thought:) "I am indeed a practitioner of intense austerities (tapas), and this entanglement is truly troublesome."
मिथुनस्यास्य किं मे स्यात्कृतं पापं यतो गतिः ।
अनिष्टा सर्वभूतानां कीर्तितानेन मेऽद्य वै ॥२३॥
23. mithunasyāsya kiṁ me syātkṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yato gatiḥ ,
aniṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ kīrtitānena me'dya vai.
23. mithunasya asya kim me syāt kṛtam pāpam yataḥ gatiḥ
aniṣṭā sarvabhūtānām kīrtitā anena me adya vai
23. asya mithunasya kim pāpam me kṛtam syāt yataḥ sarvabhūtānām aniṣṭā gatiḥ anena adya me vai kīrtitā.
23. What sin have I committed regarding this couple, by which an undesired destiny (gati) for all creatures has now been proclaimed for me by him?
एवं संचिन्तयन्नेव विपुलो राजसत्तम ।
अवाङ्मुखो न्यस्तशिरा दध्यौ दुष्कृतमात्मनः ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ saṁcintayanneva vipulo rājasattama ,
avāṅmukho nyastaśirā dadhyau duṣkṛtamātmanaḥ.
24. evam saṃcintayan eva vipulaḥ rājasattama
avāṅmukhaḥ nyastaśirāḥ dadhyau duṣkṛtam ātmanaḥ
24. rājasattama vipulaḥ evam saṃcintayan eva
avāṅmukhaḥ nyastaśirāḥ ātmanaḥ duṣkṛtam dadhyau
24. O best of kings, Vipula, thus contemplating, with his face downcast and head bowed, pondered his own misdeed (ātman).
ततः षडन्यान्पुरुषानक्षैः काञ्चनराजतैः ।
अपश्यद्दीव्यमानान्वै लोभहर्षान्वितांस्तथा ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ ṣaḍanyānpuruṣānakṣaiḥ kāñcanarājataiḥ ,
apaśyaddīvyamānānvai lobhaharṣānvitāṁstathā.
25. tataḥ ṣaṭ anyān puruṣān akṣaiḥ kāñcanarājataiḥ
apaśyat dīvyamānān vai lobhaharṣānvitān tathā
25. tataḥ saḥ ṣaṭ anyān kāñcanarājataiḥ akṣaiḥ dīvyamānān
lobhaharṣānvitān puruṣān vai tathā apaśyat
25. Then, he saw six other persons (puruṣa) playing with dice made of gold and silver, indeed filled with greed and joy, and thus.
कुर्वतः शपथं तं वै यः कृतो मिथुनेन वै ।
विपुलं वै समुद्दिश्य तेऽपि वाक्यमथाब्रुवन् ॥२६॥
26. kurvataḥ śapathaṁ taṁ vai yaḥ kṛto mithunena vai ,
vipulaṁ vai samuddiśya te'pi vākyamathābruvan.
26. kurvataḥ śapatham tam vai yaḥ kṛtaḥ mithunena vai
vipulam vai samuddiśya te api vākyam atha abruvan
26. yaḥ śapatham mithunena vai kṛtaḥ vipulam vai samuddiśya
tam śapatham kurvataḥ te api atha vākyam abruvan
26. While performing that oath - which had indeed been made by the couple concerning Vipula - they also then spoke these words.
यो लोभमास्थायास्माकं विषमं कर्तुमुत्सहेत् ।
विपुलस्य परे लोके या गतिस्तामवाप्नुयात् ॥२७॥
27. yo lobhamāsthāyāsmākaṁ viṣamaṁ kartumutsahet ,
vipulasya pare loke yā gatistāmavāpnuyāt.
27. yaḥ lobham āsthāya asmākam viṣamam kartum utsahet
vipulasya pare loke yā gatiḥ tām avāpnuyāt
27. yaḥ lobham āsthāya asmākam viṣamam kartum utsahet
saḥ pare loke vipulasya yā gatiḥ tām avāpnuyāt
27. Whoever, resorting to greed (lobha), would dare to do injustice to us, may he attain that same destination (gati) in the other world that is Vipula's.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विपुलो नापश्यद्धर्मसंकरम् ।
जन्मप्रभृति कौरव्य कृतपूर्वमथात्मनः ॥२८॥
28. etacchrutvā tu vipulo nāpaśyaddharmasaṁkaram ,
janmaprabhṛti kauravya kṛtapūrvamathātmanaḥ.
28. etat śrutvā tu vipulaḥ na apaśyat dharma-saṃkaram
janma-prabhṛti kauravya kṛta-pūrvam atha ātmanaḥ
28. kauravya tu etat śrutvā vipulaḥ janma-prabhṛti
ātmanaḥ kṛta-pūrvam atha dharma-saṃkaram na apaśyat
28. Having heard this, Vipula, however, did not perceive any transgression of natural law (dharma) that he had committed since his birth, O scion of Kuru.
स प्रदध्यौ तदा राजन्नग्नावग्निरिवाहितः ।
दह्यमानेन मनसा शापं श्रुत्वा तथाविधम् ॥२९॥
29. sa pradadhyau tadā rājannagnāvagnirivāhitaḥ ,
dahyamānena manasā śāpaṁ śrutvā tathāvidham.
29. saḥ pradadhyau tadā rājan agnau agniḥ iva āhitaḥ
dahyamānena manasā śāpam śrutvā tathā-vidham
29. rājan tadā saḥ tathā-vidham śāpam śrutvā agnau
agniḥ iva āhitaḥ dahyamānena manasā pradadhyau
29. Then, O king, he pondered deeply, with his mind burning as if it were fire placed into fire, having heard such a curse.
तस्य चिन्तयतस्तात बह्व्यो दिननिशा ययुः ।
इदमासीन्मनसि च रुच्या रक्षणकारितम् ॥३०॥
30. tasya cintayatastāta bahvyo dinaniśā yayuḥ ,
idamāsīnmanasi ca rucyā rakṣaṇakāritam.
30. tasya cintayataḥ tāta bahvyaḥ dina-niśāḥ yayuḥ
idam āsīt manasi ca rucyā rakṣaṇa-kāritam
30. tāta tasya cintayataḥ bahvyaḥ dina-niśāḥ yayuḥ
ca manasi idam āsīt rucyā rakṣaṇa-kāritam
30. As he continued to ponder, O father, many days and nights passed. And this thought was in his mind: 'It was done out of a desire for protection.'
लक्षणं लक्षणेनैव वदनं वदनेन च ।
विधाय न मया चोक्तं सत्यमेतद्गुरोस्तदा ॥३१॥
31. lakṣaṇaṁ lakṣaṇenaiva vadanaṁ vadanena ca ,
vidhāya na mayā coktaṁ satyametadgurostadā.
31. lakṣaṇam lakṣaṇena eva vadanam vadanena ca
vidhāya na mayā ca uktam satyam etat guroḥ tadā
31. lakṣaṇena eva lakṣaṇam ca vadanena vadanam vidhāya,
tadā etat guroḥ satyam mayā ca na uktam
31. Having managed every subtle aspect, feature by feature and face by face, this truth concerning the preceptor was not spoken by me then.
एतदात्मनि कौरव्य दुष्कृतं विपुलस्तदा ।
अमन्यत महाभाग तथा तच्च न संशयः ॥३२॥
32. etadātmani kauravya duṣkṛtaṁ vipulastadā ,
amanyata mahābhāga tathā tacca na saṁśayaḥ.
32. etad ātmani kauravya duṣkṛtam vipulaḥ tadā
amanyata mahābhāga tathā tat ca na saṃśayaḥ
32. kauravya mahābhāga vipulaḥ tadā etad duṣkṛtam
ātmani amanyata tathā tat ca saṃśayaḥ na
32. O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), Vipula then regarded that great wrongdoing as being within himself. And indeed, O fortunate one (mahābhāga), there is no doubt about that.
स चम्पां नगरीमेत्य पुष्पाणि गुरवे ददौ ।
पूजयामास च गुरुं विधिवत्स गुरुप्रियः ॥३३॥
33. sa campāṁ nagarīmetya puṣpāṇi gurave dadau ,
pūjayāmāsa ca guruṁ vidhivatsa gurupriyaḥ.
33. sa campām nagarīm etya puṣpāṇi gurave dadau
pūjayāmāsa ca gurum vidhivat sa gurupriyaḥ
33. sa campām nagarīm etya gurave puṣpāṇi dadau
ca sa gurupriyaḥ gurum vidhivat pūjayāmāsa
33. Having arrived at the city of Campā, he gave flowers to his spiritual teacher (guru). And that beloved disciple (gurupriya) worshipped his teacher in accordance with the prescribed rites.
