संजय उवाच ।
परिणाम्य निशां तां तु भारद्वाजो महारथः ।
बहूक्त्वा च ततो राजन्राजानं च सुयोधनम् ॥१॥

विधाय योगं पार्थेन संशप्तकगणैः सह ।
निष्क्रान्ते च रणात्पार्थे संशप्तकवधं प्रति ॥२॥
2. vidhāya yogaṁ pārthena saṁśaptakagaṇaiḥ saha ,
niṣkrānte ca raṇātpārthe saṁśaptakavadhaṁ prati.

2. ...having devised a strategic plan (yoga) involving Partha (Arjuna) with the Saṃśaptaka groups, and when Partha had departed from the battle for the slaughter of the Saṃśaptakas.
व्यूढानीकस्ततो द्रोणः पाण्डवानां महाचमूम् ।
अभ्ययाद्भरतश्रेष्ठ धर्मराजजिघृक्षया ॥३॥
3. vyūḍhānīkastato droṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahācamūm ,
abhyayādbharataśreṣṭha dharmarājajighṛkṣayā.

3. Then Droṇa, with his army arrayed, advanced towards the great army of the Pāṇḍavas, O best among the Bhāratas, with the intention of capturing King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja).
व्यूहं दृष्ट्वा सुपर्णं तु भारद्वाजकृतं तदा ।
व्यूहेन मण्डलार्धेन प्रत्यव्यूहद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥४॥
4. vyūhaṁ dṛṣṭvā suparṇaṁ tu bhāradvājakṛtaṁ tadā ,
vyūhena maṇḍalārdhena pratyavyūhadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

4. Having then seen the Suparṇa (eagle) array, created by Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), Yudhiṣṭhira counter-arrayed with a half-moon (maṇḍalārdha) formation.
मुखमासीत्सुपर्णस्य भारद्वाजो महारथः ।
शिरो दुर्योधनो राजा सोदर्यैः सानुगैः सह ॥५॥
5. mukhamāsītsuparṇasya bhāradvājo mahārathaḥ ,
śiro duryodhano rājā sodaryaiḥ sānugaiḥ saha.

5. The mouth of the Suparṇa (eagle) formation was Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), the great charioteer. The head was King Duryodhana, along with his brothers and followers.
चक्षुषी कृतवर्मा च गौतमश्चास्यतां वरः ।
भूतवर्मा क्षेमशर्मा करकर्षश्च वीर्यवान् ॥६॥
6. cakṣuṣī kṛtavarmā ca gautamaścāsyatāṁ varaḥ ,
bhūtavarmā kṣemaśarmā karakarṣaśca vīryavān.

bhūtavarmā kṣemaśarmā karakarṣaḥ ca vīryavān
6. (asya vyūhasya) cakṣuṣī kṛtavarmā ca gautamaḥ ca,

6. Kṛtavarmā and Gautama, the best among those present, formed the two eyes (of the array). Bhūtavarmā, Kṣemaśarmā, and the valiant Karakarṣa (were also part of the formation).
कलिङ्गाः सिंहलाः प्राच्याः शूराभीरा दशेरकाः ।
शका यवनकाम्बोजास्तथा हंसपदाश्च ये ॥७॥
7. kaliṅgāḥ siṁhalāḥ prācyāḥ śūrābhīrā daśerakāḥ ,
śakā yavanakāmbojāstathā haṁsapadāśca ye.

7. The Kaliṅgas, Siṃhalas, Prācyas, Śūrābhīras, Daśerakas, Śakas, Yavanas, Kāmbojas, and also those known as Haṃsapadāḥ (were present).
ग्रीवायां शूरसेनाश्च दरदा मद्रकेकयाः ।
गजाश्वरथपत्त्यौघास्तस्थुः शतसहस्रशः ॥८॥
8. grīvāyāṁ śūrasenāśca daradā madrakekayāḥ ,
gajāśvarathapattyaughāstasthuḥ śatasahasraśaḥ.

8. The Śūrasenas, Daradas, and Madra-Kekayas, along with their throngs of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, stood by the neck (of the battle formation) in hundreds of thousands.
भूरिश्रवाः शलः शल्यः सोमदत्तश्च बाह्लिकः ।
अक्षौहिण्या वृता वीरा दक्षिणं पक्षमाश्रिताः ॥९॥
9. bhūriśravāḥ śalaḥ śalyaḥ somadattaśca bāhlikaḥ ,
akṣauhiṇyā vṛtā vīrā dakṣiṇaṁ pakṣamāśritāḥ.

9. Bhūriśravas, Śala, Śalya, Somadatta, and Bāhlika - these heroes, surrounded by an akṣauhiṇī (army division), took their position on the right flank.
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ काम्बोजश्च सुदक्षिणः ।
वामं पक्षं समाश्रित्य द्रोणपुत्राग्रगाः स्थिताः ॥१०॥
10. vindānuvindāvāvantyau kāmbojaśca sudakṣiṇaḥ ,
vāmaṁ pakṣaṁ samāśritya droṇaputrāgragāḥ sthitāḥ.

10. Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, and Sudakṣiṇa, the Kāmboja king, took their position on the left flank, with Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman) at their head.
पृष्ठे कलिङ्गाः साम्बष्ठा मागधाः पौण्ड्रमद्रकाः ।
गान्धाराः शकुनिप्राग्याः पार्वतीया वसातयः ॥११॥
11. pṛṣṭhe kaliṅgāḥ sāmbaṣṭhā māgadhāḥ pauṇḍramadrakāḥ ,
gāndhārāḥ śakuniprāgyāḥ pārvatīyā vasātayaḥ.

11. In the rear were the Kalingas, along with the Ambashthas, Magadhas, Paundras, Madras, Gandharas, those led by Shakuni, the mountain dwellers, and the Vasatis.
पुच्छे वैकर्तनः कर्णः सपुत्रज्ञातिबान्धवः ।
महत्या सेनया तस्थौ नानाध्वजसमुत्थया ॥१२॥
12. pucche vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ saputrajñātibāndhavaḥ ,
mahatyā senayā tasthau nānādhvajasamutthayā.

12. At the rear, Karna, the son of Vikartana, took his stand with his sons, relatives, and kinsmen, accompanied by a great army displaying various raised banners.
जयद्रथो भीमरथः सांयात्रिकसभो जयः ।
भूमिंजयो वृषक्राथो नैषधश्च महाबलः ॥१३॥
13. jayadratho bhīmarathaḥ sāṁyātrikasabho jayaḥ ,
bhūmiṁjayo vṛṣakrātho naiṣadhaśca mahābalaḥ.
13. jayadrathaḥ bhīmarathaḥ sāṃyātrikasabhaḥ jayaḥ
bhūmiṃjayaḥ vṛṣakrāthaḥ naiṣadhaḥ ca mahābalaḥ

13. Jayadratha, Bhimaratha, Sāṃyātrikasabha, Jaya, Bhūmiñjaya, Vṛṣakrātha, and Naiṣadha, the very powerful one.
वृता बलेन महता ब्रह्मलोकपुरस्कृताः ।
व्यूहस्योपरि ते राजन्स्थिता युद्धविशारदाः ॥१४॥
14. vṛtā balena mahatā brahmalokapuraskṛtāḥ ,
vyūhasyopari te rājansthitā yuddhaviśāradāḥ.

14. O King, those experts in warfare, highly regarded in the Brahma-loka (brahmaloka) and accompanied by a great army, were stationed above the battle formation.
द्रोणेन विहितो व्यूहः पदात्यश्वरथद्विपैः ।
वातोद्धूतार्णवाकारः प्रवृत्त इव लक्ष्यते ॥१५॥
15. droṇena vihito vyūhaḥ padātyaśvarathadvipaiḥ ,
vātoddhūtārṇavākāraḥ pravṛtta iva lakṣyate.

15. The battle formation (vyūha) arranged by Drona, comprising infantry, cavalry, chariots, and elephants, appears like an ocean agitated by the wind, as if it has been set in motion.
तस्य पक्षप्रपक्षेभ्यो निष्पतन्ति युयुत्सवः ।
सविद्युत्स्तनिता मेघाः सर्वदिग्भ्य इवोष्णगे ॥१६॥
16. tasya pakṣaprapakṣebhyo niṣpatanti yuyutsavaḥ ,
savidyutstanitā meghāḥ sarvadigbhya ivoṣṇage.
16. tasya pakṣaprapakṣebhyaḥ niṣpatanti yuyutsavaḥ
savidyutstanitāḥ meghāḥ sarvadigbhyaḥ iva uṣṇage

16. O King (uṣṇage)! From the main and subsidiary flanks of that formation, warriors eager for battle (yuyutsu) emerge, just like thunderous clouds accompanied by lightning rise from all directions.
तस्य प्राग्ज्योतिषो मध्ये विधिवत्कल्पितं गजम् ।
आस्थितः शुशुभे राजन्नंशुमानुदये यथा ॥१७॥
17. tasya prāgjyotiṣo madhye vidhivatkalpitaṁ gajam ,
āsthitaḥ śuśubhe rājannaṁśumānudaye yathā.
17. tasya prāgjyotiṣaḥ madhye vidhivat kalpitam
gajam āsthitaḥ śuśubhe rājan aṃśumān udaye yathā

17. O King (rājan)! The one from Prāgjyotiṣa (prāgjyotiṣaḥ), positioned on an elephant duly arranged in the center of that (formation), shone brilliantly, just as the sun (aṃśumān) appears at sunrise.
माल्यदामवता राजा श्वेतच्छत्रेण धार्यता ।
कृत्तिकायोगयुक्तेन पौर्णमास्यामिवेन्दुना ॥१८॥
18. mālyadāmavatā rājā śvetacchatreṇa dhāryatā ,
kṛttikāyogayuktena paurṇamāsyāmivendunā.

18. The king, adorned with a garland and a white umbrella, was made glorious, like the moon (indu), which on a full moon day (paurṇamāsī) is conjoined with the Kṛttikā constellation.
नीलाञ्जनचयप्रख्यो मदान्धो द्विरदो बभौ ।
अभिवृष्टो महामेघैर्यथा स्यात्पर्वतो महान् ॥१९॥
19. nīlāñjanacayaprakhyo madāndho dvirado babhau ,
abhivṛṣṭo mahāmeghairyathā syātparvato mahān.
19. nīlāñjanacayaprakhyaḥ madāndhaḥ dviradaḥ babhau
abhivṛṣṭaḥ mahāmeghaiḥ yathā syāt parvataḥ mahān
19. madāndhaḥ nīlāñjanacayaprakhyaḥ dviradaḥ babhau,
yathā mahān parvataḥ mahāmeghaiḥ abhivṛṣṭaḥ syāt
19. The elephant, dark like a heap of blue collyrium and blinded by its rut, appeared magnificent, just as a great mountain would when drenched by enormous clouds.
नानानृपतिभिर्वीरैर्विविधायुधभूषणैः ।
समन्वितः पार्वतीयैः शक्रो देवगणैरिव ॥२०॥
20. nānānṛpatibhirvīrairvividhāyudhabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
samanvitaḥ pārvatīyaiḥ śakro devagaṇairiva.
20. nānānṛpatibhiḥ vīraiḥ vividhāyudhabhūṣaṇaiḥ
samanvitaḥ pārvatīyaiḥ śakraḥ devagaṇaiḥ iva
20. śakraḥ devagaṇaiḥ iva,
nānānṛpatibhiḥ vīraiḥ vividhāyudhabhūṣaṇaiḥ pārvatīyaiḥ samanvitaḥ
20. (He was) accompanied by various heroic kings from the mountains, adorned with diverse weapons and ornaments, just as Indra (śakra) is surrounded by the hosts of gods.
ततो युधिष्ठिरः प्रेक्ष्य व्यूहं तमतिमानुषम् ।
अजय्यमरिभिः संख्ये पार्षतं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. tato yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prekṣya vyūhaṁ tamatimānuṣam ,
ajayyamaribhiḥ saṁkhye pārṣataṁ vākyamabravīt.
21. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prekṣya vyūham tam atimānuṣam
ajayyam aribhiḥ saṃkhye pārṣatam vākyam abravīt
21. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tam atimānuṣam aribhiḥ saṃkhye ajayyam vyūham prekṣya,
pārṣatam vākyam abravīt
21. Then Yudhishthira, seeing that battle array, which was superhuman and unconquerable by enemies in battle, spoke these words to Parshata (Dhrishtadyumna).
ब्राह्मणस्य वशं नाहमियामद्य यथा प्रभो ।
पारावतसवर्णाश्व तथा नीतिर्विधीयताम् ॥२२॥
22. brāhmaṇasya vaśaṁ nāhamiyāmadya yathā prabho ,
pārāvatasavarṇāśva tathā nītirvidhīyatām.
22. brāhmaṇasya vaśam na aham iyām adya yathā prabho
pārāvatasavarṇāḥ ca aśvāḥ tathā nītiḥ vidhīyatām
22. prabho,
yathā adya aham brāhmaṇasya vaśam na iyām,
tathā ca pārāvatasavarṇāḥ aśvāḥ nītiḥ vidhīyatām
22. O lord, I must not today fall under the control of a Brahmin (Drona). Therefore, let a strategy be adopted so that (our army does not end up with) pigeon-colored horses (i.e., weak and ineffective steeds).
धृष्टद्युम्न उवाच ।
द्रोणस्य यतमानस्य वशं नैष्यसि सुव्रत ।
अहमावारयिष्यामि द्रोणमद्य सहानुगम् ॥२३॥
23. dhṛṣṭadyumna uvāca ,
droṇasya yatamānasya vaśaṁ naiṣyasi suvrata ,
ahamāvārayiṣyāmi droṇamadya sahānugam.
23. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ uvāca droṇasya yatamānasya vaśam na
eṣyasi suvrata aham āvārayiṣyāmi droṇam adya sahānugam
23. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ uvāca suvrata droṇasya yatamānasya vaśam
na eṣyasi aham adya sahānugam droṇam āvārayiṣyāmi
23. Dhṛṣṭadyumna said: "O virtuous one, you will not fall under Droṇa's control, no matter how much he strives. I will indeed restrain Droṇa today, along with his followers."
मयि जीवति कौरव्य नोद्वेगं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
न हि शक्तो रणे द्रोणो विजेतुं मां कथंचन ॥२४॥
24. mayi jīvati kauravya nodvegaṁ kartumarhasi ,
na hi śakto raṇe droṇo vijetuṁ māṁ kathaṁcana.
24. mayi jīvati kauravya na udvegam kartum arhasi
na hi śaktaḥ raṇe droṇaḥ vijetum mām kathaṃcana
24. kauravya mayi jīvati na udvegam kartum arhasi
hi droṇaḥ raṇe mām kathaṃcana vijetum na śaktaḥ
24. Dhṛṣṭadyumna continued: "O descendant of Kuru, you should not feel any anxiety while I am alive. For Droṇa is certainly not capable of conquering me in battle by any means whatsoever."
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा किरन्बाणान्द्रुपदस्य सुतो बली ।
पारावतसवर्णाश्वः स्वयं द्रोणमुपाद्रवत् ॥२५॥
25. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvā kiranbāṇāndrupadasya suto balī ,
pārāvatasavarṇāśvaḥ svayaṁ droṇamupādravat.
25. saṃjayaḥ uvāca evam uktvā kiran bāṇān drupadasya
sutaḥ balī pārāvatasavarṇāśvaḥ svayam droṇam upādravat
25. saṃjayaḥ uvāca drupadasya balī sutaḥ pārāvatasavarṇāśvaḥ
evam uktvā bāṇān kiran svayam droṇam upādravat
25. Saṃjaya said: "Having spoken thus, the mighty son of Drupada, whose horses were the color of pigeons, himself showered arrows and charged at Droṇa."
अनिष्टदर्शनं दृष्ट्वा धृष्टद्युम्नमवस्थितम् ।
क्षणेनैवाभवद्द्रोणो नातिहृष्टमना इव ॥२६॥
26. aniṣṭadarśanaṁ dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnamavasthitam ,
kṣaṇenaivābhavaddroṇo nātihṛṣṭamanā iva.
26. aniṣṭadarśanam dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnam avasthitam
kṣaṇena eva abhavat droṇaḥ na ati hṛṣṭamanā iva
26. aniṣṭadarśanam avasthitam dhṛṣṭadyumnam dṛṣṭvā
droṇaḥ kṣaṇena eva na ati hṛṣṭamanā iva abhavat
26. Having seen Dhṛṣṭadyumna standing there, a truly unwelcome sight, Droṇa's mind instantly became, as it were, far from joyful.
तं तु संप्रेक्ष्य पुत्रस्ते दुर्मुखः शत्रुकर्शनः ।
प्रियं चिकीर्षन्द्रोणस्य धृष्टद्युम्नमवारयत् ॥२७॥
27. taṁ tu saṁprekṣya putraste durmukhaḥ śatrukarśanaḥ ,
priyaṁ cikīrṣandroṇasya dhṛṣṭadyumnamavārayat.
27. taṃ tu samprekṣya putraḥ te durmukhaḥ śatrukarśanaḥ
priyaṃ cikīrṣan droṇasya dhṛṣṭadyumnam avārayat
27. te putraḥ durmukhaḥ śatrukarśanaḥ taṃ samprekṣya
droṇasya priyaṃ cikīrṣan dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ avārayat
27. Your son Durmukha, the vanquisher of foes, upon seeing that, wished to please Droṇa and thus restrained Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
स संप्रहारस्तुमुलः समरूप इवाभवत् ।
पार्षतस्य च शूरस्य दुर्मुखस्य च भारत ॥२८॥
28. sa saṁprahārastumulaḥ samarūpa ivābhavat ,
pārṣatasya ca śūrasya durmukhasya ca bhārata.

28. भारत सः तुमुलः संप्रहारः पार्षतस्य

28. O Bhārata, that fierce combat between the brave Pārṣata and Durmukha became, as it were, evenly matched.
पार्षतः शरजालेन क्षिप्रं प्रच्छाद्य दुर्मुखम् ।
भारद्वाजं शरौघेण महता समवारयत् ॥२९॥
29. pārṣataḥ śarajālena kṣipraṁ pracchādya durmukham ,
bhāradvājaṁ śaraugheṇa mahatā samavārayat.

29. Pārṣata, quickly covering Durmukha with a net of arrows, then restrained the son of Bharadvāja (Droṇa) with a great multitude of arrows.
द्रोणमावारितं दृष्ट्वा भृशायस्तस्तवात्मजः ।
नानालिङ्गैः शरव्रातैः पार्षतं सममोहयत् ॥३०॥
30. droṇamāvāritaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhṛśāyastastavātmajaḥ ,
nānāliṅgaiḥ śaravrātaiḥ pārṣataṁ samamohayat.

30. Upon seeing Droṇa restrained, your son (Durmukha), greatly agitated, completely bewildered Pārṣata with barrages of arrows bearing diverse marks.
तयोर्विषक्तयोः संख्ये पाञ्चाल्यकुरुमुख्ययोः ।
द्रोणो यौधिष्ठिरं सैन्यं बहुधा व्यधमच्छरैः ॥३१॥
31. tayorviṣaktayoḥ saṁkhye pāñcālyakurumukhyayoḥ ,
droṇo yaudhiṣṭhiraṁ sainyaṁ bahudhā vyadhamaccharaiḥ.
31. tayoḥ viṣaktayoḥ saṃkhye pāñcālyakurumukhyayoḥ droṇaḥ

31. While those two, the chief of the Pañcālas and the chief of the Kurus, were fiercely engaged in battle, Droṇa scattered Yudhiṣṭhira's army in many ways with his arrows.
अनिलेन यथाभ्राणि विच्छिन्नानि समन्ततः ।
तथा पार्थस्य सैन्यानि विच्छिन्नानि क्वचित्क्वचित् ॥३२॥
32. anilena yathābhrāṇi vicchinnāni samantataḥ ,
tathā pārthasya sainyāni vicchinnāni kvacitkvacit.

32. Just as clouds are scattered in every direction by the wind, so too were Pārtha's (Arjuna's) forces scattered here and there.
मुहूर्तमिव तद्युद्धमासीन्मधुरदर्शनम् ।
तत उन्मत्तवद्राजन्निर्मर्यादमवर्तत ॥३३॥
33. muhūrtamiva tadyuddhamāsīnmadhuradarśanam ,
tata unmattavadrājannirmaryādamavartata.

tataḥ unmattavat rājan nirmaryādam avartata

33. For a moment, that battle was pleasant to behold; but thereafter, O King, it proceeded like madmen, without any restraint.
नैव स्वे न परे राजन्नज्ञायन्त परस्परम् ।
अनुमानेन संज्ञाभिर्युद्धं तत्समवर्तत ॥३४॥
34. naiva sve na pare rājannajñāyanta parasparam ,
anumānena saṁjñābhiryuddhaṁ tatsamavartata.

34. Neither one's own men nor the enemies, O King, could recognize each other. That battle proceeded by inference and by signs.
चूडामणिषु निष्केषु भूषणेष्वसिचर्मसु ।
तेषामादित्यवर्णाभा मरीच्यः प्रचकाशिरे ॥३५॥
35. cūḍāmaṇiṣu niṣkeṣu bhūṣaṇeṣvasicarmasu ,
teṣāmādityavarṇābhā marīcyaḥ pracakāśire.
35. cūḍāmaṇiṣu niṣkeṣu bhūṣaṇeṣu asi-carmasu
teṣām āditya-varṇābhā marīcyaḥ pracakāśire

35. Their rays, radiant like the sun's brilliance, shone forth from their crest-jewels, necklaces, ornaments, swords, and shields.
तत्प्रकीर्णपताकानां रथवारणवाजिनाम् ।
बलाकाशबलाभ्राभं ददृशे रूपमाहवे ॥३६॥
36. tatprakīrṇapatākānāṁ rathavāraṇavājinām ,
balākāśabalābhrābhaṁ dadṛśe rūpamāhave.

36. In that battle, the sight of their chariots, elephants, and horses, with unfurled banners, appeared like variegated clouds dotted with cranes.
नरानेव नरा जघ्नुरुदग्राश्च हया हयान् ।
रथांश्च रथिनो जघ्नुर्वारणा वरवारणान् ॥३७॥
37. narāneva narā jaghnurudagrāśca hayā hayān ,
rathāṁśca rathino jaghnurvāraṇā varavāraṇān.

37. Men indeed slew men; mighty horses slew horses; charioteers slew chariots; and elephants slew excellent elephants.
समुच्छ्रितपताकानां गजानां परमद्विपैः ।
क्षणेन तुमुलो घोरः संग्रामः समवर्तत ॥३८॥
38. samucchritapatākānāṁ gajānāṁ paramadvipaiḥ ,
kṣaṇena tumulo ghoraḥ saṁgrāmaḥ samavartata.

38. Among the elephants with their banners raised, a tumultuous and dreadful battle with the supreme elephants swiftly erupted.
तेषां संसक्तगात्राणां कर्षतामितरेतरम् ।
दन्तसंघातसंघर्षात्सधूमोऽग्निरजायत ॥३९॥
39. teṣāṁ saṁsaktagātrāṇāṁ karṣatāmitaretaram ,
dantasaṁghātasaṁgharṣātsadhūmo'gnirajāyata.

39. From the friction of the massed tusks of those whose bodies were entangled and who were dragging each other, a smoky fire arose.
विप्रकीर्णपताकास्ते विषाणजनिताग्नयः ।
बभूवुः खं समासाद्य सविद्युत इवाम्बुदाः ॥४०॥
40. viprakīrṇapatākāste viṣāṇajanitāgnayaḥ ,
babhūvuḥ khaṁ samāsādya savidyuta ivāmbudāḥ.
40. viprakīrṇapatākāḥ te viṣāṇajanitāgnayaḥ
babhūvuḥ kham samāsādya savidyutaḥ iva ambudāḥ

40. With their banners scattered and fires generated by their tusks, they became like lightning-filled clouds that had reached the sky.
विक्षरद्भिर्नदद्भिश्च निपतद्भिश्च वारणैः ।
संबभूव मही कीर्णा मेघैर्द्यौरिव शारदी ॥४१॥
41. vikṣaradbhirnadadbhiśca nipatadbhiśca vāraṇaiḥ ,
saṁbabhūva mahī kīrṇā meghairdyauriva śāradī.

41. The earth became covered with elephants that were showering (ichor/blood), roaring, and falling, just like an autumnal sky strewn with clouds.
तेषामाहन्यमानानां बाणतोमरवृष्टिभिः ।
वारणानां रवो जज्ञे मेघानामिव संप्लवे ॥४२॥
42. teṣāmāhanyamānānāṁ bāṇatomaravṛṣṭibhiḥ ,
vāraṇānāṁ ravo jajñe meghānāmiva saṁplave.
42. teṣām āhanyamānānām bāṇatomaravṛṣṭibhiḥ

42. A roar arose from those elephants, who were being struck by showers of arrows and javelins, similar to the sound of clouds during a deluge.
तोमराभिहताः केचिद्बाणैश्च परमद्विपाः ।
वित्रेसुः सर्वभूतानां शब्दमेवापरेऽव्रजन् ॥४३॥
43. tomarābhihatāḥ kecidbāṇaiśca paramadvipāḥ ,
vitresuḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ śabdamevāpare'vrajan.

43. Some of the excellent elephants, struck by javelins and arrows, trembled in terror. Others merely fled at the sound of all creatures.
विषाणाभिहताश्चापि केचित्तत्र गजा गजैः ।
चक्रुरार्तस्वरं घोरमुत्पातजलदा इव ॥४४॥
44. viṣāṇābhihatāścāpi kecittatra gajā gajaiḥ ,
cakrurārtasvaraṁ ghoramutpātajaladā iva.
44. viṣāṇābhihatāḥ ca api kecit tatra gajāḥ gajaiḥ
cakruḥ ārtasvaram ghoram utpātajaladāḥ iva

44. Some elephants there, struck by the tusks of other elephants, also let out a terrible cry of distress, like clouds foreboding disaster.
प्रतीपं ह्रियमाणाश्च वारणा वरवारणैः ।
उन्मथ्य पुनराजह्रुः प्रेरिताः परमाङ्कुशैः ॥४५॥
45. pratīpaṁ hriyamāṇāśca vāraṇā varavāraṇaiḥ ,
unmathya punarājahruḥ preritāḥ paramāṅkuśaiḥ.

45. And elephants, though being driven back by superior elephants, later, spurred on by excellent goads, overthrew (their opponents) and drove them back again.
महामात्रा महामात्रैस्ताडिताः शरतोमरैः ।
गजेभ्यः पृथिवीं जग्मुर्मुक्तप्रहरणाङ्कुशाः ॥४६॥
46. mahāmātrā mahāmātraistāḍitāḥ śaratomaraiḥ ,
gajebhyaḥ pṛthivīṁ jagmurmuktapraharaṇāṅkuśāḥ.

46. Mahouts, struck by the arrows and javelins (of rival) mahouts, fell from their elephants to the ground, having abandoned their weapons and goads.
निर्मनुष्याश्च मातङ्गा विनदन्तस्ततस्ततः ।
छिन्नाभ्राणीव संपेतुः संप्रविश्य परस्परम् ॥४७॥
47. nirmanuṣyāśca mātaṅgā vinadantastatastataḥ ,
chinnābhrāṇīva saṁpetuḥ saṁpraviśya parasparam.

47. And the riderless elephants, roaring in all directions, crashed into each other like scattered clouds.
हतान्परिवहन्तश्च यन्त्रिताः परमायुधैः ।
दिशो जग्मुर्महानागाः केचिदेकचरा इव ॥४८॥
48. hatānparivahantaśca yantritāḥ paramāyudhaiḥ ,
diśo jagmurmahānāgāḥ kecidekacarā iva.

48. And some great elephants, carrying the dead, while others were restrained by mighty weapons, scattered in all directions as if wandering alone.
ताडितास्ताड्यमानाश्च तोमरर्ष्टिपरश्वधैः ।
पेतुरार्तस्वरं कृत्वा तदा विशसने गजाः ॥४९॥
49. tāḍitāstāḍyamānāśca tomararṣṭiparaśvadhaiḥ ,
peturārtasvaraṁ kṛtvā tadā viśasane gajāḥ.
49. tāḍitāḥ tāḍyamānāḥ ca tomararṣṭiparaśvadhaiḥ
petuḥ ārtasvaram kṛtvā tadā viśasane gajāḥ

49. The elephants, whether already struck or still being struck by javelins, spears, and axes, then fell in that slaughter, uttering cries of distress.
तेषां शैलोपमैः कायैर्निपतद्भिः समन्ततः ।
आहता सहसा भूमिश्चकम्पे च ननाद च ॥५०॥
50. teṣāṁ śailopamaiḥ kāyairnipatadbhiḥ samantataḥ ,
āhatā sahasā bhūmiścakampe ca nanāda ca.

50. With their mountain-like bodies falling all around, the earth, suddenly struck by them, trembled and roared.
सादितैः सगजारोहैः सपताकैः समन्ततः ।
मातङ्गैः शुशुभे भूमिर्विकीर्णैरिव पर्वतैः ॥५१॥
51. sāditaiḥ sagajārohaiḥ sapatākaiḥ samantataḥ ,
mātaṅgaiḥ śuśubhe bhūmirvikīrṇairiva parvataiḥ.
51. sādītaiḥ sagajārohaiḥ sapatākaiḥ samantataḥ
mātaṅgaiḥ śuśubhe bhūmiḥ vikīrṇaiḥ iva parvataiḥ

51. The ground appeared magnificent, strewn everywhere with elephants that had been struck down, along with their riders and banners, resembling scattered mountains.
गजस्थाश्च महामात्रा निर्भिन्नहृदया रणे ।
रथिभिः पातिता भल्लैर्विकीर्णाङ्कुशतोमराः ॥५२॥
52. gajasthāśca mahāmātrā nirbhinnahṛdayā raṇe ,
rathibhiḥ pātitā bhallairvikīrṇāṅkuśatomarāḥ.
52. gajasthāḥ ca mahāmātrāḥ nirbhinnahṛdayāḥ raṇe
rathibhiḥ pātitāḥ bhallaiḥ vikīrṇāṅkuśatomarāḥ

52. In battle, the great officers, who were mounted on elephants, their hearts pierced and their elephant-goads and lances scattered, were struck down by charioteers with spears.
क्रौञ्चवद्विनदन्तोऽन्ये नाराचाभिहता गजाः ।
परान्स्वांश्चापि मृद्नन्तः परिपेतुर्दिशो दश ॥५३॥
53. krauñcavadvinadanto'nye nārācābhihatā gajāḥ ,
parānsvāṁścāpi mṛdnantaḥ paripeturdiśo daśa.

53. Other elephants, struck by arrows and roaring like curlews, trampled both enemies and their own forces as they scattered in all ten directions.
गजाश्वरथसंघानां शरीरौघसमावृता ।
बभूव पृथिवी राजन्मांसशोणितकर्दमा ॥५४॥
54. gajāśvarathasaṁghānāṁ śarīraughasamāvṛtā ,
babhūva pṛthivī rājanmāṁsaśoṇitakardamā.

54. O King, the earth became covered with heaps of bodies of elephants, horses, and chariots, transformed into a quagmire of flesh and blood.
प्रमथ्य च विषाणाग्रैः समुत्क्षिप्य च वारणैः ।
सचक्राश्च विचक्राश्च रथैरेव महारथाः ॥५५॥
55. pramathya ca viṣāṇāgraiḥ samutkṣipya ca vāraṇaiḥ ,
sacakrāśca vicakrāśca rathaireva mahārathāḥ.
55. pramathya ca viṣāṇāgraiḥ samutkṣipya ca vāraṇaiḥ
sa-cakrāḥ ca vi-cakrāḥ ca rathaiḥ eva mahā-rathāḥ

55. Great warriors (mahārathāḥ), along with their chariots (ratha) – some of which still had wheels and some that had lost them – were crushed and tossed up by elephants with the tips of their tusks.
रथाश्च रथिभिर्हीना निर्मनुष्याश्च वाजिनः ।
हतारोहाश्च मातङ्गा दिशो जग्मुः शरातुराः ॥५६॥
56. rathāśca rathibhirhīnā nirmanuṣyāśca vājinaḥ ,
hatārohāśca mātaṅgā diśo jagmuḥ śarāturāḥ.
56. rathāḥ ca rathibhiḥ hīnāḥ nir-manuṣyāḥ ca vājinaḥ
hata-ārohāḥ ca mātaṅgāḥ diśaḥ jagmuḥ śara-āturāḥ

56. Chariots, abandoned by their charioteers, and horses, riderless; and elephants, their riders slain, distressed by arrows, fled in all directions.
जघानात्र पिता पुत्रं पुत्रश्च पितरं तथा ।
इत्यासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं न प्रज्ञायत किंचन ॥५७॥
57. jaghānātra pitā putraṁ putraśca pitaraṁ tathā ,
ityāsīttumulaṁ yuddhaṁ na prajñāyata kiṁcana.
57. jaghāna atra pitā putraṃ putraḥ ca pitaraṃ tathā
iti āsīt tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ na pra-jñāyata kiṃ-cana

57. In this [battle], a father killed his son, and similarly, a son killed his father. Such was the tumultuous (yuddha) battle that nothing at all could be discerned.
आ गुल्फेभ्योऽवसीदन्त नराः शोणितकर्दमे ।
दीप्यमानैः परिक्षिप्ता दावैरिव महाद्रुमाः ॥५८॥
58. ā gulphebhyo'vasīdanta narāḥ śoṇitakardame ,
dīpyamānaiḥ parikṣiptā dāvairiva mahādrumāḥ.
58. ā gulphebhyaḥ avasīdanta narāḥ śoṇita-kardame
dīpyamānaiḥ pari-kṣiptāḥ dāvaiḥ iva mahā-drumāḥ

58. Men were sinking up to their ankles in the mud of blood, enveloped by blazing [elements], just as great trees are surrounded by forest fires (dāva).
शोणितैः सिच्यमानानि वस्त्राणि कवचानि च ।
छत्राणि च पताकाश्च सर्वं रक्तमदृश्यत ॥५९॥

59. Garments and armors, being drenched with blood, and also royal canopies and banners - everything was seen to be red.
हयौघाश्च रथौघाश्च नरौघाश्च निपातिताः ।
संवृत्ताः पुनरावृत्ता बहुधा रथनेमिभिः ॥६०॥
60. hayaughāśca rathaughāśca naraughāśca nipātitāḥ ,
saṁvṛttāḥ punarāvṛttā bahudhā rathanemibhiḥ.

60. Masses of horses, chariots, and men, having been struck down, were repeatedly churned by chariot wheels in many ways.
स गजौघमहावेगः परासुनरशैवलः ।
रथौघतुमुलावर्तः प्रबभौ सैन्यसागरः ॥६१॥
61. sa gajaughamahāvegaḥ parāsunaraśaivalaḥ ,
rathaughatumulāvartaḥ prababhau sainyasāgaraḥ.

61. That ocean-like army shone forth, having vast currents composed of elephant masses, with dead men as its algae, and terrible whirlpools formed by masses of chariots.
तं वाहनमहानौभिर्योधा जयधनैषिणः ।
अवगाह्यावमज्जन्तो नैव मोहं प्रचक्रिरे ॥६२॥
62. taṁ vāhanamahānaubhiryodhā jayadhanaiṣiṇaḥ ,
avagāhyāvamajjanto naiva mohaṁ pracakrire.
62. tam vāhanamahānoubhiḥ yodhāḥ jayadhanaiṣiṇaḥ
avagāhya avamajjantaḥ na eva moham pracakrire
62. jayadhanaiṣiṇaḥ yodhāḥ vāhanamahānoubhiḥ tam

62. The warriors, eager for victory and wealth, plunged into that (ocean-like army) with their great vehicle-ships, and even while sinking, they did not at all experience confusion or unconsciousness.
शरवर्षाभिवृष्टेषु योधेष्वजितलक्ष्मसु ।
न हि स्वचित्ततां लेभे कश्चिदाहतलक्षणः ॥६३॥
63. śaravarṣābhivṛṣṭeṣu yodheṣvajitalakṣmasu ,
na hi svacittatāṁ lebhe kaścidāhatalakṣaṇaḥ.

63. Among the warriors, who were drenched by a rain of arrows yet whose valiant marks remained unvanquished, not one whose distinguishing features (like composure) were struck could maintain their mental clarity.
वर्तमाने तथा युद्धे घोररूपे भयंकरे ।
मोहयित्वा परान्द्रोणो युधिष्ठिरमुपाद्रवत् ॥६४॥
64. vartamāne tathā yuddhe ghorarūpe bhayaṁkare ,
mohayitvā parāndroṇo yudhiṣṭhiramupādravat.

64. As that terrifying and fearful battle continued, Drona, having deluded his enemies, rushed towards Yudhishthira.
