वर्गोवाच ।
ततो वयं प्रव्यथिताः सर्वा भरतसत्तम ।
आयाम शरणं विप्रं तं तपोधनमच्युतम् ॥१॥
1. vargovāca ,
tato vayaṁ pravyathitāḥ sarvā bharatasattama ,
āyāma śaraṇaṁ vipraṁ taṁ tapodhanamacyutam.
1. vargaḥ uvāca | tataḥ vayam pravyathitāḥ sarvāḥ
bharatasattama | āyam śaraṇam vipram tam tapodhanam acyutam
1. The group said: 'Then we, all greatly distressed, O best of Bharatas, sought refuge in that Brahmin, that one rich in austerity (tapas), that infallible one.'
रूपेण वयसा चैव कन्दर्पेण च दर्पिताः ।
अयुक्तं कृतवत्यः स्म क्षन्तुमर्हसि नो द्विज ॥२॥
2. rūpeṇa vayasā caiva kandarpeṇa ca darpitāḥ ,
ayuktaṁ kṛtavatyaḥ sma kṣantumarhasi no dvija.
2. rūpeṇa vayasā ca eva kandarpeṇa ca darpitāḥ |
ayuktam kṛtavatyaḥ sma kṣantum arhasi naḥ dvija
2. Infatuated by our beauty, youth, and by the god of love (Kandarpa), we have done what was improper. O Brahmin, you ought to forgive us.
एष एव वधोऽस्माकं सुपर्याप्तस्तपोधन ।
यद्वयं संशितात्मानं प्रलोब्धुं त्वामिहागताः ॥३॥
3. eṣa eva vadho'smākaṁ suparyāptastapodhana ,
yadvayaṁ saṁśitātmānaṁ pralobdhuṁ tvāmihāgatāḥ.
3. eṣa eva vadhaḥ asmākam suparyāptaḥ tapodhana |
yat vayam saṃśitātmānam pralobdhum tvām iha āgatāḥ
3. O ascetic (tapasvin)! This itself is a sufficient downfall for us, that we came here to tempt you, whose self (ātman) is well-controlled.
अवध्यास्तु स्त्रियः सृष्टा मन्यन्ते धर्मचिन्तकाः ।
तस्माद्धर्मेण धर्मज्ञ नास्मान्हिंसितुमर्हसि ॥४॥
4. avadhyāstu striyaḥ sṛṣṭā manyante dharmacintakāḥ ,
tasmāddharmeṇa dharmajña nāsmānhiṁsitumarhasi.
4. avadhyāḥ tu striyaḥ sṛṣṭāḥ manyante dharmacintakāḥ
| tasmāt dharmeṇa dharmajña na asmān hiṃsitum arhasi
4. However, those who ponder natural law (dharma) consider women to be inviolable, having been created as such. Therefore, O knower of natural law (dharma), you ought not to harm us, in accordance with natural law (dharma).
सर्वभूतेषु धर्मज्ञ मैत्रो ब्राह्मण उच्यते ।
सत्यो भवतु कल्याण एष वादो मनीषिणाम् ॥५॥
5. sarvabhūteṣu dharmajña maitro brāhmaṇa ucyate ,
satyo bhavatu kalyāṇa eṣa vādo manīṣiṇām.
5. sarvabhūteṣu dharmajña maitraḥ brāhmaṇaḥ ucyate
| satyaḥ bhavatu kalyāṇa eṣa vādaḥ manīṣiṇām
5. O knower of natural law (dharma), a Brahmin is said to be friendly towards all beings. O auspicious one, may this declaration of the wise prove true!
शरणं च प्रपन्नानां शिष्टाः कुर्वन्ति पालनम् ।
शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नाः स्म तस्मात्त्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥६॥
6. śaraṇaṁ ca prapannānāṁ śiṣṭāḥ kurvanti pālanam ,
śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ prapannāḥ sma tasmāttvaṁ kṣantumarhasi.
6. śaraṇam ca prapannānām śiṣṭāḥ kurvanti pālanam |
śaraṇam tvām prapannāḥ sma tasmāt tvam kṣantum arhasi
6. The virtuous protect those who seek refuge. We have sought refuge in you; therefore, you ought to forgive us.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु धर्मात्मा ब्राह्मणः शुभकर्मकृत् ।
प्रसादं कृतवान्वीर रविसोमसमप्रभः ॥७॥
7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu dharmātmā brāhmaṇaḥ śubhakarmakṛt ,
prasādaṁ kṛtavānvīra ravisomasamaprabhaḥ.
7. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ tu dharmātmā brāhmaṇaḥ
śubhakarmakṛt prasādam kṛtavān vīra ravisomasamaprabhaḥ
7. Vaiśampāyana said: When addressed in this manner, the hero, a brahmin with a righteous (dharma) disposition who performed auspicious deeds and shone with a luster equal to the sun and moon, showed his grace.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
शतं सहस्रं विश्वं च सर्वमक्षयवाचकम् ।
परिमाणं शतं त्वेतन्नैतदक्षयवाचकम् ॥८॥
8. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
śataṁ sahasraṁ viśvaṁ ca sarvamakṣayavācakam ,
parimāṇaṁ śataṁ tvetannaitadakṣayavācakam.
8. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca śatam sahasram viśvam ca sarvam
akṣayavācakam parimāṇam śatam tu etat na etat akṣayavācakam
8. The brahmin said: "The words 'hundred', 'thousand', and 'universe' all refer to the imperishable. However, this count of 'a hundred' itself does not denote the imperishable."
यदा च वो ग्राहभूता गृह्णन्तीः पुरुषाञ्जले ।
उत्कर्षति जलात्कश्चित्स्थलं पुरुषसत्तमः ॥९॥
9. yadā ca vo grāhabhūtā gṛhṇantīḥ puruṣāñjale ,
utkarṣati jalātkaścitsthalaṁ puruṣasattamaḥ.
9. yadā ca vaḥ grāhabhūtāḥ gṛhṇantīḥ puruṣān jale
utkarṣati jalāt kaścit sthalam puruṣasattamaḥ
9. And when, while you (who have become grāhas or crocodiles) are seizing men in the water, some best of men (puruṣa) pulls one of you out of the water onto the land...
तदा यूयं पुनः सर्वाः स्वरूपं प्रतिपत्स्यथ ।
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे हसतापि कदाचन ॥१०॥
10. tadā yūyaṁ punaḥ sarvāḥ svarūpaṁ pratipatsyatha ,
anṛtaṁ noktapūrvaṁ me hasatāpi kadācana.
10. tadā yūyam punaḥ sarvāḥ svarūpam pratipatsyatha
anṛtam na uktapūrvam me hasatā api kadācana
10. Then all of you will regain your original forms. A lie has never been spoken by me, not even in jest.
तानि सर्वाणि तीर्थानि इतः प्रभृति चैव ह ।
नारीतीर्थानि नाम्नेह ख्यातिं यास्यन्ति सर्वशः ।
पुण्यानि च भविष्यन्ति पावनानि मनीषिणाम् ॥११॥
11. tāni sarvāṇi tīrthāni itaḥ prabhṛti caiva ha ,
nārītīrthāni nāmneha khyātiṁ yāsyanti sarvaśaḥ ,
puṇyāni ca bhaviṣyanti pāvanāni manīṣiṇām.
11. tāni sarvāṇi tīrthāni itaḥ prabhṛti
ca eva ha nārītīrthāni nāmnā iha
khyātiṃ yāsyanti sarvaśaḥ puṇyāni
ca bhaviṣyanti pāvanāni manīṣiṇām
11. Henceforth, all these holy places will indeed become universally known here by the name 'women's holy places'. They will also be sacred and purifying for the wise.
वर्गोवाच ।
ततोऽभिवाद्य तं विप्रं कृत्वा चैव प्रदक्षिणम् ।
अचिन्तयामोपसृत्य तस्माद्देशात्सुदुःखिताः ॥१२॥
12. vargovāca ,
tato'bhivādya taṁ vipraṁ kṛtvā caiva pradakṣiṇam ,
acintayāmopasṛtya tasmāddeśātsuduḥkhitāḥ.
12. vargaḥ uvāca tataḥ abhivādya taṃ vipraṃ kṛtvā ca eva
pradakṣiṇam acintayāma upasṛtya tasmāt deśāt suduḥkhitāḥ
12. Varga said: Then, having saluted that brahmin and performed circumambulation, we, greatly distressed, retired from that place and pondered.
क्व नु नाम वयं सर्वाः कालेनाल्पेन तं नरम् ।
समागच्छेम यो नस्तद्रूपमापादयेत्पुनः ॥१३॥
13. kva nu nāma vayaṁ sarvāḥ kālenālpena taṁ naram ,
samāgacchema yo nastadrūpamāpādayetpunaḥ.
13. kva nu nāma vayam sarvāḥ kālena alpena taṃ naram
samāgacchema yaḥ naḥ tad rūpam āpādayet punaḥ
13. Where indeed might all of us meet that man again in a short time, the one who could restore us to that form (our original form)?
ता वयं चिन्तयित्वैवं मुहूर्तादिव भारत ।
दृष्टवत्यो महाभागं देवर्षिमुत नारदम् ॥१४॥
14. tā vayaṁ cintayitvaivaṁ muhūrtādiva bhārata ,
dṛṣṭavatyo mahābhāgaṁ devarṣimuta nāradam.
14. tāḥ vayam cintayitvā evam muhūrtāt iva bhārata
dṛṣṭavatyaḥ mahābhāgaṃ devarṣim uta nāradam
14. O Bhārata, having pondered thus, we saw the greatly fortunate divine sage Nārada, as if (it was) just a moment later.
सर्वा हृष्टाः स्म तं दृष्ट्वा देवर्षिममितद्युतिम् ।
अभिवाद्य च तं पार्थ स्थिताः स्म व्यथिताननाः ॥१५॥
15. sarvā hṛṣṭāḥ sma taṁ dṛṣṭvā devarṣimamitadyutim ,
abhivādya ca taṁ pārtha sthitāḥ sma vyathitānanāḥ.
15. sarvāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ sma tam dṛṣṭvā devarṣim amitadyutim
| abhivādya ca tam pārtha sthitāḥ sma vyathitānanāḥ
15. All of us were joyful upon seeing him, the divine sage of immeasurable splendor. Yet, after saluting him, O son of Pṛthā (pārtha), we stood with distressed faces.
स नोऽपृच्छद्दुःखमूलमुक्तवत्यो वयं च तत् ।
श्रुत्वा तच्च यथावृत्तमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. sa no'pṛcchadduḥkhamūlamuktavatyo vayaṁ ca tat ,
śrutvā tacca yathāvṛttamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
16. saḥ naḥ apṛcchat duḥkhamūlam uktavatyaḥ vayam ca
tat | śrutvā ca yathāvṛttam idam vacanam abravīt
16. He asked us the root of our sorrow, and we told him that. Having heard that and how it had all happened, he spoke these words.
दक्षिणे सागरानूपे पञ्च तीर्थानि सन्ति वै ।
पुण्यानि रमणीयानि तानि गच्छत माचिरम् ॥१७॥
17. dakṣiṇe sāgarānūpe pañca tīrthāni santi vai ,
puṇyāni ramaṇīyāni tāni gacchata māciram.
17. dakṣiṇe sāgarānūpe pañca tīrthāni santi vai
| puṇyāni ramaṇīyāni tāni gacchata mā aciram
17. Indeed, in the southern coastal region, there are five sacred and delightful holy bathing places (tīrthas). Go to them without delay!
तत्राशु पुरुषव्याघ्रः पाण्डवो वो धनंजयः ।
मोक्षयिष्यति शुद्धात्मा दुःखादस्मान्न संशयः ॥१८॥
18. tatrāśu puruṣavyāghraḥ pāṇḍavo vo dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
mokṣayiṣyati śuddhātmā duḥkhādasmānna saṁśayaḥ.
18. tatra āśu puruṣavyāghraḥ pāṇḍavaḥ vaḥ dhanañjayaḥ
| mokṣayiṣyati śuddhātmā duḥkhāt asmān na saṃśayaḥ
18. There, quickly, the tiger among men (puruṣavyāghraḥ), your Pāṇḍava Dhanañjaya, the pure-souled one (śuddhātmā), will liberate us from sorrow; there is no doubt about it.
तस्य सर्वा वयं वीर श्रुत्वा वाक्यमिहागताः ।
तदिदं सत्यमेवाद्य मोक्षिताहं त्वयानघ ॥१९॥
19. tasya sarvā vayaṁ vīra śrutvā vākyamihāgatāḥ ,
tadidaṁ satyamevādya mokṣitāhaṁ tvayānagha.
19. tasya sarvāḥ vayam vīra śrutvā vākyam iha āgatāḥ
tat idam satyam eva adya mokṣitā aham tvayā anagha
19. O hero, all of us came here after hearing his words. Therefore, this is indeed true: today I have been liberated (mokṣa) by you, O sinless one.
एतास्तु मम वै सख्यश्चतस्रोऽन्या जले स्थिताः ।
कुरु कर्म शुभं वीर एताः सर्वा विमोक्षय ॥२०॥
20. etāstu mama vai sakhyaścatasro'nyā jale sthitāḥ ,
kuru karma śubhaṁ vīra etāḥ sarvā vimokṣaya.
20. etāḥ tu mama vai sakhyaḥ catasraḥ anyāḥ jale
sthitāḥ kuru karma śubham vīra etāḥ sarvāḥ vimokṣaya
20. Indeed, these are my four other female companions who are in the water. O hero, perform a good action (karma) and liberate all of them!
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्ताः पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः सर्वा एव विशां पते ।
तस्माच्छापाददीनात्मा मोक्षयामास वीर्यवान् ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tatastāḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ sarvā eva viśāṁ pate ,
tasmācchāpādadīnātmā mokṣayāmāsa vīryavān.
21. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ tāḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ sarvāḥ eva
viśām pate tasmāt śāpāt adīnātmā mokṣayāmāsa vīryavān
21. Vaiśampayana said: Then, O ruler of the people, the best of the Pāṇḍavas, who was noble-souled and powerful, indeed liberated all of them from that curse.
उत्थाय च जलात्तस्मात्प्रतिलभ्य वपुः स्वकम् ।
तास्तदाप्सरसो राजन्नदृश्यन्त यथा पुरा ॥२२॥
22. utthāya ca jalāttasmātpratilabhya vapuḥ svakam ,
tāstadāpsaraso rājannadṛśyanta yathā purā.
22. utthāya ca jalāt tasmāt pratilabhya vapuḥ svakam
tāḥ tadā apsarasaḥ rājan adṛśyanta yathā purā
22. And having risen up from that water, and having regained their own bodies, those Apsaras then appeared, O king, just as they were before.
तीर्थानि शोधयित्वा तु तथानुज्ञाय ताः प्रभुः ।
चित्राङ्गदां पुनर्द्रष्टुं मणलूरपुरं ययौ ॥२३॥
23. tīrthāni śodhayitvā tu tathānujñāya tāḥ prabhuḥ ,
citrāṅgadāṁ punardraṣṭuṁ maṇalūrapuraṁ yayau.
23. tīrthāni śodhayitvā tu tathā anujñāya tāḥ prabhuḥ
citrāṅgadām punar draṣṭuṃ maṇalūrapuraṃ yayau
23. After visiting and purifying the sacred places, and having similarly bid farewell to them, the lord (Arjuna) went again to the city of Manipura to see Chitrangada.
तस्यामजनयत्पुत्रं राजानं बभ्रुवाहनम् ।
तं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवो राजन्गोकर्णमभितोऽगमत् ॥२४॥
24. tasyāmajanayatputraṁ rājānaṁ babhruvāhanam ,
taṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavo rājangokarṇamabhito'gamat.
24. tasyām ajanayat putraṃ rājānaṃ babhruvāhanam tam
dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaḥ rājan gokarṇam abhitaḥ agamat
24. Through her (Chitrangada), he fathered a son, Babhruvahana, who became a king. O King, after seeing him, the Pandava (Arjuna) then proceeded towards Gokarna.
