मातोवाच ।
नैव राज्ञा दरः कार्यो जातु कस्यांचिदापदि ।
अथ चेदपि दीर्णः स्यान्नैव वर्तेत दीर्णवत् ॥१॥
1. mātovāca ,
naiva rājñā daraḥ kāryo jātu kasyāṁcidāpadi ,
atha cedapi dīrṇaḥ syānnaiva varteta dīrṇavat.

1. The mother said: "A king should never show fear in any adversity. And even if he is inwardly distressed, he should certainly not act as if he is distressed."
दीर्णं हि दृष्ट्वा राजानं सर्वमेवानुदीर्यते ।
राष्ट्रं बलममात्याश्च पृथक्कुर्वन्ति ते मतिम् ॥२॥
2. dīrṇaṁ hi dṛṣṭvā rājānaṁ sarvamevānudīryate ,
rāṣṭraṁ balamamātyāśca pṛthakkurvanti te matim.
2. dīrṇam hi dṛṣṭvā rājānam sarvam eva anudīryate
rāṣṭram balam amātyāḥ ca pṛthak kurvanti te matim
2. hi rājānam dīrṇam dṛṣṭvā sarvam eva anudīryate
rāṣṭram balam amātyāḥ ca te pṛthak matim kurvanti
2. Indeed, when a king is seen to be distressed, everything immediately disintegrates. The kingdom, the army, and the ministers all form their own separate intentions.
शत्रूनेके प्रपद्यन्ते प्रजहत्यपरे पुनः ।
अन्वेके प्रजिहीर्षन्ति ये पुरस्ताद्विमानिताः ॥३॥
3. śatrūneke prapadyante prajahatyapare punaḥ ,
anveke prajihīrṣanti ye purastādvimānitāḥ.
3. śatrūn eke prapadyante prajahati apare punaḥ
anu eke prajihīrṣanti ye purastāt vimānitāḥ
3. eke śatrūn prapadyante apare punaḥ prajahati
ye purastāt vimānitāḥ anu eke prajihīrṣanti
3. Some indeed approach the enemies, while others again abandon him. Still others, who were previously insulted, wish to eliminate him.
य एवात्यन्तसुहृदस्त एनं पर्युपासते ।
अशक्तयः स्वस्तिकामा बद्धवत्सा इडा इव ।
शोचन्तमनुशोचन्ति प्रतीतानिव बान्धवान् ॥४॥
4. ya evātyantasuhṛdasta enaṁ paryupāsate ,
aśaktayaḥ svastikāmā baddhavatsā iḍā iva ,
śocantamanuśocanti pratītāniva bāndhavān.
4. ye eva atyantasuhṛdaḥ te enam
paryupāsate aśaktayaḥ svastikāmāḥ
baddhavatsāḥ iḍāḥ iva śocantam
anuśocanti pratītān iva bāndhavān
4. ye eva atyantasuhṛdaḥ te enam paryupāsate
aśaktayaḥ svastikāmāḥ baddhavatsāḥ
iḍāḥ iva (santaḥ) śocantam anuśocanti
(tathā) pratītān bāndhavān iva (śocanti)
4. Only those who are exceptionally close friends attend upon him. Powerless, and desiring their own well-being, they grieve along with the lamenting king, just like cows whose calves are tied up, grieving as if for their own trusted relatives (who are lost or gone).
अपि ते पूजिताः पूर्वमपि ते सुहृदो मताः ।
ये राष्ट्रमभिमन्यन्ते राज्ञो व्यसनमीयुषः ।
मा दीदरस्त्वं सुहृदो मा त्वां दीर्णं प्रहासिषुः ॥५॥
5. api te pūjitāḥ pūrvamapi te suhṛdo matāḥ ,
ye rāṣṭramabhimanyante rājño vyasanamīyuṣaḥ ,
mā dīdarastvaṁ suhṛdo mā tvāṁ dīrṇaṁ prahāsiṣuḥ.
5. api te pūjitāḥ pūrvam api te suhṛdaḥ
matāḥ ye rāṣṭram abhimanyante
rājñaḥ vyasanam īyuṣaḥ mā dīdaraḥ
tvam suhṛdaḥ mā tvām dīrṇam prahāsiṣuḥ
5. api te pūrvam pūjitāḥ api te suhṛdaḥ
matāḥ ye rājñaḥ vyasanam īyuṣaḥ
(tasya) rāṣṭram abhimanyante tvam mā
dīdaraḥ suhṛdaḥ mā tvām dīrṇam prahāsiṣuḥ
5. Even those who were previously honored, even those considered friends, claim the kingdom of a king who has fallen into misfortune. Do not distress yourself, O king, lest your friends abandon you when you are distressed.
प्रभावं पौरुषं बुद्धिं जिज्ञासन्त्या मया तव ।
उल्लपन्त्या समाश्वासं बलवानिव दुर्बलम् ॥६॥
6. prabhāvaṁ pauruṣaṁ buddhiṁ jijñāsantyā mayā tava ,
ullapantyā samāśvāsaṁ balavāniva durbalam.
6. prabhāvam pauruṣam buddhim jijñāsantyā mayā
tava ullapantyā samāśvāsam balavān iva durbalam
6. mayā tava prabhāvam pauruṣam buddhim jijñāsantyā
balavān iva durbalam samāśvāsam ullapantyā
6. By me, desiring to comprehend your influence, valor (pauruṣa), and intellect, and offering consolation, just as a strong person does to a weak one.
यद्येतत्संविजानासि यदि सम्यग्ब्रवीम्यहम् ।
कृत्वासौम्यमिवात्मानं जयायोत्तिष्ठ संजय ॥७॥
7. yadyetatsaṁvijānāsi yadi samyagbravīmyaham ,
kṛtvāsaumyamivātmānaṁ jayāyottiṣṭha saṁjaya.
7. yadi etat saṃvijānāsi yadi samyak bravīmi aham
kṛtvā asūmyam iva ātmānam jayāya uttiṣṭha saṃjaya
7. saṃjaya yadi etat saṃvijānāsi yadi aham samyak
bravīmi ātmānam asūmyam iva kṛtvā jayāya uttiṣṭha
7. If you understand this, and if I speak correctly, then, making your self (ātman) as if stern, O Saṃjaya, rise up for victory.
अस्ति नः कोशनिचयो महानविदितस्तव ।
तमहं वेद नान्यस्तमुपसंपादयामि ते ॥८॥
8. asti naḥ kośanicayo mahānaviditastava ,
tamahaṁ veda nānyastamupasaṁpādayāmi te.
8. asti naḥ kośanicayaḥ mahān aviditaḥ tava
tam aham veda na anyaḥ tam upasaṃpādayāmi te
8. tava aviditaḥ naḥ mahān kośanicayaḥ asti
aham tam veda na anyaḥ tam te upasaṃpādayāmi
8. We have a great collection of wealth, unknown to you. I know it, and no one else (knows it). I will procure it for you.
सन्ति नैकशता भूयः सुहृदस्तव संजय ।
सुखदुःखसहा वीर शतार्हा अनिवर्तिनः ॥९॥
9. santi naikaśatā bhūyaḥ suhṛdastava saṁjaya ,
sukhaduḥkhasahā vīra śatārhā anivartinaḥ.
9. santi naikaśatā bhūyaḥ suhṛdaḥ tava saṃjaya
sukhaduḥkhasahā vīra śatārhā anivartinaḥ
9. saṃjaya vīra tava naikaśatā bhūyaḥ suhṛdaḥ
santi sukhaduḥkhasahā śatārhā anivartinaḥ
9. O Saṃjaya, O hero, there are many hundreds more of your friends who endure both happiness and sorrow, are worthy of immense respect, and are unwavering.
तादृशा हि सहाया वै पुरुषस्य बुभूषतः ।
ईषदुज्जिहतः किंचित्सचिवाः शत्रुकर्शनाः ॥१०॥
10. tādṛśā hi sahāyā vai puruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ ,
īṣadujjihataḥ kiṁcitsacivāḥ śatrukarśanāḥ.
10. tādṛśāḥ hi sahāyāḥ vai puruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ
īṣat ujjihataḥ kiñcit sacivāḥ śatrukarśanāḥ
10. hi vai tādṛśāḥ śatrukarśanāḥ sacivāḥ sahāyāḥ
puruṣasya bubhūṣataḥ īṣat kiñcit ujjihataḥ
10. Truly, such ministers (sacivāḥ), who can subdue enemies, are indeed the best helpers for a person (puruṣa) who desires to prosper and is making even a slight effort to rise.
पुत्र उवाच ।
कस्य त्वीदृशकं वाक्यं श्रुत्वापि स्वल्पचेतसः ।
तमो न व्यपहन्येत सुचित्रार्थपदाक्षरम् ॥११॥
11. putra uvāca ,
kasya tvīdṛśakaṁ vākyaṁ śrutvāpi svalpacetasaḥ ,
tamo na vyapahanyeta sucitrārthapadākṣaram.
11. putraḥ uvāca kasya tu īdṛśakam vākyam śrutvā api
svalpacetasaḥ tamaḥ na vyapahanyeta suvitrārthapadākṣaram
11. putraḥ uvāca tu kasya svalpacetasaḥ api īdṛśakam
suvitrārthapadākṣaram vākyam śrutvā tamaḥ na vyapahanyeta
11. The son said: "Even for someone of meager intellect, whose ignorance (tamas) would not be dispelled after hearing such a statement, so beautifully articulated in its meaning, words, and syllables?"
उदके धूरियं धार्या सर्तव्यं प्रवणे मया ।
यस्य मे भवती नेत्री भविष्यद्भूतदर्शिनी ॥१२॥
12. udake dhūriyaṁ dhāryā sartavyaṁ pravaṇe mayā ,
yasya me bhavatī netrī bhaviṣyadbhūtadarśinī.
12. udake dhūḥ iyam dhāryā sartavyam pravaṇe mayā
yasya me bhavatī netrī bhaviṣyadbhūtadarśinī
12. yasya me bhavatī bhaviṣyadbhūtadarśinī netrī
mayā udake iyam dhūḥ dhāryā pravaṇe sartavyam
12. This burden (dhūḥ) is to be borne by me in the water, and I must pass through this perilous current, as you, who foresee both the future and the past, are my guide.
अहं हि वचनं त्वत्तः शुश्रूषुरपरापरम् ।
किंचित्किंचित्प्रतिवदंस्तूष्णीमासं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१३॥
13. ahaṁ hi vacanaṁ tvattaḥ śuśrūṣuraparāparam ,
kiṁcitkiṁcitprativadaṁstūṣṇīmāsaṁ muhurmuhuḥ.
13. aham hi vacanam tvattaḥ śuśrūṣuḥ aparāparam
kiñcit kiñcit prativadan tūṣṇīm āsam muhurmuhuḥ
13. hi aham tvattaḥ aparāparam vacanam śuśrūṣuḥ
kiñcit kiñcit prativadan muhurmuhuḥ tūṣṇīm āsam
13. Indeed, I, desiring to hear your every successive word, remained silent again and again, only occasionally offering a small reply.
अतृप्यन्नमृतस्येव कृच्छ्राल्लब्धस्य बान्धवात् ।
उद्यच्छाम्येष शत्रूणां नियमाय जयाय च ॥१४॥
14. atṛpyannamṛtasyeva kṛcchrāllabdhasya bāndhavāt ,
udyacchāmyeṣa śatrūṇāṁ niyamāya jayāya ca.
14. atṛpyan amṛtasya iva kṛcchrāt labdhasya bāndhavāt
udyacchāmi eṣa śatrūṇām niyamāya jayāya ca
14. atṛpyan amṛtasya iva kṛcchrāt labdhasya bāndhavāt,
eṣa śatrūṇām niyamāya ca jayāya udyacchāmi.
14. As one who remains unsatiated even after receiving something as precious as nectar obtained with great difficulty from a kinsman, I now strive for the control and victory over my enemies.
कुन्त्युवाच ।
सदश्व इव स क्षिप्तः प्रणुन्नो वाक्यसायकैः ।
तच्चकार तथा सर्वं यथावदनुशासनम् ॥१५॥
15. kuntyuvāca ,
sadaśva iva sa kṣiptaḥ praṇunno vākyasāyakaiḥ ,
taccakāra tathā sarvaṁ yathāvadanuśāsanam.
15. kuntī uvāca sadaśvaḥ iva saḥ kṣiptaḥ praṇunnaḥ
vākya-sāyakaiḥ tat cakāra tathā sarvam yathāvat anuśāsanam
15. kuntī uvāca saḥ vākya-sāyakaiḥ kṣiptaḥ praṇunnaḥ sadaśvaḥ iva,
tathā yathāvat sarvam anuśāsanam tat cakāra.
15. Kunti said: Like a noble horse, he, urged and impelled by sharp, arrow-like words, duly carried out all the instructions as commanded.
इदमुद्धर्षणं भीमं तेजोवर्धनमुत्तमम् ।
राजानं श्रावयेन्मन्त्री सीदन्तं शत्रुपीडितम् ॥१६॥
16. idamuddharṣaṇaṁ bhīmaṁ tejovardhanamuttamam ,
rājānaṁ śrāvayenmantrī sīdantaṁ śatrupīḍitam.
16. idam uddharṣaṇam bhīmam tejo-vardhanam uttamam
rājānam śrāvayet mantrī sīdantam śatru-pīḍitam
16. mantrī idam uddharṣaṇam bhīmam tejo-vardhanam uttamam śatru-pīḍitam sīdantam rājānam śrāvayet.
16. This exhilarating, formidable, excellent, and spirit-lifting message should be recited by a minister to a king who is disheartened and tormented by his enemies.
जयो नामेतिहासोऽयं श्रोतव्यो विजिगीषुणा ।
महीं विजयते क्षिप्रं श्रुत्वा शत्रूंश्च मर्दति ॥१७॥
17. jayo nāmetihāso'yaṁ śrotavyo vijigīṣuṇā ,
mahīṁ vijayate kṣipraṁ śrutvā śatrūṁśca mardati.
17. jayaḥ nāma itihāsaḥ ayam śrotavyaḥ vijigīṣuṇā
mahīm vijayate kṣipram śrutvā śatrūn ca mardati
17. ayam itihāsaḥ jayaḥ nāma,
vijigīṣuṇā śrotavyaḥ.
[saḥ] śrutvā kṣipram mahīm vijayate ca śatrūn mardati.
17. This narrative, named 'Jaya', should be heard by one who desires victory. Having listened to it, one quickly conquers the earth and crushes one's enemies.
इदं पुंसवनं चैव वीराजननमेव च ।
अभीक्ष्णं गर्भिणी श्रुत्वा ध्रुवं वीरं प्रजायते ॥१८॥
18. idaṁ puṁsavanaṁ caiva vīrājananameva ca ,
abhīkṣṇaṁ garbhiṇī śrutvā dhruvaṁ vīraṁ prajāyate.
18. idam puṃsavanam ca eva vīrājananam eva ca
abhīkṣṇam garbhiṇī śrutvā dhruvam vīram prajāyate
18. garbhiṇī abhīkṣṇam idam puṃsavanam vīrājananam
ca eva ca śrutvā dhruvam vīram prajāyate
18. If a pregnant woman constantly hears this (text), which is for begetting a male child (puṃsavana) and for giving birth to heroes, she will surely give birth to a heroic son.
विद्याशूरं तपःशूरं दमशूरं तपस्विनम् ।
ब्राह्म्या श्रिया दीप्यमानं साधुवादेन संमतम् ॥१९॥
19. vidyāśūraṁ tapaḥśūraṁ damaśūraṁ tapasvinam ,
brāhmyā śriyā dīpyamānaṁ sādhuvādena saṁmatam.
19. vidyāśūram tapaḥśūram damaśūram tapasvinam
brāhmyā śriyā dīpyamānam sādhuvādena sammatam
19. (tam) vidyāśūram tapaḥśūram damaśūram tapasvinam brāhmyā
śriyā dīpyamānam sādhuvādena sammatam (prajāyate)
19. He is mighty in knowledge, mighty in austerity (tapas), mighty in self-control, an ascetic, shining with Brahmanical splendor, and esteemed by the praise of good people.
अर्चिष्मन्तं बलोपेतं महाभागं महारथम् ।
धृष्टवन्तमनाधृष्यं जेतारमपराजितम् ॥२०॥
20. arciṣmantaṁ balopetaṁ mahābhāgaṁ mahāratham ,
dhṛṣṭavantamanādhṛṣyaṁ jetāramaparājitam.
20. arciṣmantam balopetam mahābhāgam mahāratham
dhṛṣṭavantam anādhṛṣyam jetāram aparājitam
20. (tam) arciṣmantam balopetam mahābhāgam mahāratham
dhṛṣṭavantam anādhṛṣyam jetāram aparājitam (bhavati)
20. He is radiant, endowed with strength, greatly fortunate, a great warrior, bold, unassailable, victorious, and unconquered.
नियन्तारमसाधूनां गोप्तारं धर्मचारिणाम् ।
तदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते वीरं सत्यपराक्रमम् ॥२१॥
21. niyantāramasādhūnāṁ goptāraṁ dharmacāriṇām ,
tadarthaṁ kṣatriyā sūte vīraṁ satyaparākramam.
21. niyantāram asādhūnām goptāram dharmacāriṇām
tadartham kṣatriyā sūte vīram satyaparākramam
21. (saḥ) asādhūnām niyantāram dharmacāriṇām goptāram (bhavati) tadartham kṣatriyā satyaparākramam vīram sūte.
21. He is a controller of the wicked, a protector of those who abide by natural law (dharma); for this very purpose, a Kṣatriya woman gives birth to such a heroic son of true valor.
