Sūta said: "Thereafter, the excellent mountain Mandara, adorned with mountain peaks resembling cloud summits and enveloped by a network of creepers..."

At that time, all the hosts of gods were indeed unable to lift it. So, having approached Vishnu and Brahma, who were seated, they said this:
भवन्तावत्र कुरुतां बुद्धिं नैःश्रेयसीं पराम् ।

May you two (Vishnu and Brahma) here apply your supreme and most beneficial intellect (to this matter). And let an effort be made for our welfare in lifting Mount Mandara.

O Bhargava, Vishnu, together with Brahma, then said, "So be it." Thereupon, the mighty Ananta, having risen up, urged by Brahma and also addressed by Narayana for that task...

Then, O Brahman, the mighty Ananta forcibly lifted up that king of mountains (Mandara), along with its forests and its inhabitants.

Then, the gods, together with him (Ananta), approached the ocean. They said to it, "For the sake of ambrosia, we shall churn the waters."

Then the Lord of the Waters said, "A share should also be mine from that, because I have endured great churning from the rotation of Mount Mandara."

And the gods and asuras said to Akūpāra, the king of tortoises, "You ought to be the support for this mountain."

But the tortoise, having said "So be it," offered his back for it. And Indra, with a device, indeed pressed down upon the top of that mountain.

12.
O Brahmā, then the gods, making Mount Mandara the churning rod and Vāsuki the rope, began to churn the ocean—the treasure-house of waters—together with the Daityas and Dānavas, seeking the nectar.

13.
The great Asuras clung to one end of the serpent king (Vāsuki), while all the gods, together, stood at the end where the tail was.

Ananta, the divine Lord, where Narayana was present, lifted the serpent's head and repeatedly plunged it down.

15.
Then, as Vasuki, the serpent, was being forcibly pulled by the gods, smoky, fiery blasts of wind repeatedly burst forth from his mouth.

Those masses of smoke, having become masses of clouds with lightning, rained down upon the groups of gods who were exhausted and withered by fatigue and heat.

And from that peak of the mountain, showers of flowers descended, scattering garlands upon the groups of gods and asuras from all sides.

Here, there arose a great roar, resembling the sound of massive thunderclouds, as the ocean was being churned by Mount Mandara and by the gods and asuras.

There, hundreds of various aquatic creatures, crushed by the great mountain, met their end in the salty ocean.

And the mountain also brought to destruction various aquatic creatures, including those living in the netherworld.

And as that mountain was being churned, huge trees, along with their birds, fell from its peaks, constantly grinding against each other.

And the fire generated by their friction, constantly blazing with flames, enveloped the Mandara mountain, much like a blue cloud covered by flashes of lightning.

Indra, the best of immortals, completely extinguished that fire, which was burning everywhere, with water born from the clouds.

Then, many diverse resins from great trees and essences of medicinal plants flowed forth into the ocean's water.

From those essences of immortal potency, and from the milk itself, the gods attained immortality, and also from the exudation of gold.

27.
Then, the water and milk that originated from that ocean became mixed with the best essences. And from that milk, ghee was subsequently produced.

Then the gods said to Brahma, who was seated and granting boons: 'O Brahma, we are very much exhausted, and that nectar (of immortality) does not arise!'

Without the god Nārāyaṇa, the Daityas (demons) and the chief Nāgas (serpents) were unable to complete this churning of the ocean, even though it had been long underway.

31.
Viṣṇu said: "I grant strength to all who are engaged in this task. Let the ocean be stirred by all of them, and let Mandara Mountain be rotated!"

32.
Sūta said: "Having heard Nārāyaṇa's words, those strong ones, uniting again, greatly churned the waters of the great ocean, making them exceedingly agitated."
ततः शतसहस्रांशुः समान इव सागरात् ।

33.
Then, from the ocean, arose Soma (the Moon), shining with a hundred thousand rays, appearing with a serene luster, cool-rayed, and dazzling brilliantly.

34.
Immediately after the ghee, Śrī, clad in white, arose. Similarly, the goddess Surā and a white horse were produced.

And the divine Kaustubha gem, glorious and sparkling with rays, born from the ambrosia, arose and was placed on Nārāyaṇa's chest.

36.
Śrī, Surā, and indeed Soma (the Moon), and the horse swift as thought, were produced. From there, the gods departed, taking recourse to the path of the sun.

37.
Then the god Dhanvantari, endowed with a beautiful body, arose, carrying a white water-pot in which the ambrosia was contained.

38.
Having seen this extremely marvelous (ambrosia), a great clamor arose from the Dānavas, as they exclaimed, 'This is mine! This is mine!'

39.
Then, the Lord Nārāyaṇa, having assumed the enchanting illusion of Mohinī and adopted a wondrous female form, approached the Dānavas.

40.
Then, those Dānavas and Daityas, being deluded and all with their minds completely fixed on that woman, gave that nectar to her.
