वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु पुत्रस्य वचः शूरात्मजस्तदा ।
विहाय शोकं धर्मात्मा ददौ श्राद्धमनुत्तमम् ॥१॥

etacchrutvā tu putrasya vacaḥ śūrātmajastadā ,
vihāya śokaṁ dharmātmā dadau śrāddhamanuttamam.

1. Vaishampayana said: Indeed, having heard these words of his son (Krishna), the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) son of Shura (Vasudeva) then abandoned his sorrow and performed an excellent śrāddha ritual.
तथैव वासुदेवोऽपि स्वस्रीयस्य महात्मनः ।
दयितस्य पितुर्नित्यमकरोदौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ॥२॥
2. tathaiva vāsudevo'pi svasrīyasya mahātmanaḥ ,
dayitasya piturnityamakarodaurdhvadehikam.
2. tathā eva vāsudevaḥ api svasrīyasya mahātmanaḥ
dayitasya pituḥ nityam akarot aurdhvadehikaṃ

2. Similarly, Vāsudeva (Krishna) also always performed the post-mortem rites for his great-souled and beloved father, and for his nephew.
षष्टिं शतसहस्राणि ब्राह्मणानां महाभुजः ।
विधिवद्भोजयामास भोज्यं सर्वगुणान्वितम् ॥३॥
3. ṣaṣṭiṁ śatasahasrāṇi brāhmaṇānāṁ mahābhujaḥ ,
vidhivadbhojayāmāsa bhojyaṁ sarvaguṇānvitam.
3. ṣaṣṭiṃ śatasahasrāṇi brāhmaṇānām mahābhujaḥ
vidhivat bhojayāmāsa bhojyam sarvaguṇānvitam
3. mahābhujaḥ ṣaṣṭiṃ śatasahasrāṇi brāhmaṇānām

3. The mighty-armed one (Krishna) ritualistically fed six million Brahmins with food endowed with all excellent qualities.
आच्छाद्य च महाबाहुर्धनतृष्णामपानुदत् ।
ब्राह्मणानां तदा कृष्णस्तदभूद्रोमहर्षणम् ॥४॥
4. ācchādya ca mahābāhurdhanatṛṣṇāmapānudat ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ tadā kṛṣṇastadabhūdromaharṣaṇam.
4. ācchādya ca mahābāhuḥ dhanatṛṣṇām apānudat
brāhmaṇānām tadā kṛṣṇaḥ tat abhūt romaharṣaṇam
4. ca mahābāhuḥ kṛṣṇaḥ ācchādya tadā brāhmaṇānām
dhanatṛṣṇām apānudat tat romaharṣaṇam abhūt
4. And the mighty-armed Krishna, having distributed coverings (or gifts), then satisfied the Brahmins' desire for wealth. That event was hair-raising.
सुवर्णं चैव गाश्चैव शयनाच्छादनं तथा ।
दीयमानं तदा विप्राः प्रभूतमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥५॥
5. suvarṇaṁ caiva gāścaiva śayanācchādanaṁ tathā ,
dīyamānaṁ tadā viprāḥ prabhūtamiti cābruvan.
5. suvarṇaṃ ca eva gāḥ ca eva śayanācchādanaṃ tathā
dīyamānaṃ tadā viprāḥ prabhūtam iti ca abruvan
5. ca eva suvarṇaṃ ca eva gāḥ tathā śayanācchādanaṃ
dīyamānaṃ tadā viprāḥ prabhūtam iti ca abruvan
5. And gold, and cows, and also bedding and coverings; when these were being distributed, the Brahmins then exclaimed, "This is abundant!"
वासुदेवोऽथ दाशार्हो बलदेवः ससात्यकिः ।
अभिमन्योस्तदा श्राद्धमकुर्वन्सत्यकस्तदा ।
अतीव दुःखसंतप्ता न शमं चोपलेभिरे ॥६॥
6. vāsudevo'tha dāśārho baladevaḥ sasātyakiḥ ,
abhimanyostadā śrāddhamakurvansatyakastadā ,
atīva duḥkhasaṁtaptā na śamaṁ copalebhire.
6. vāsudevaḥ atha dāśārhaḥ baladevaḥ
sasātyakiḥ abhimanyoḥ tadā śrāddham
akurvan satyakaḥ tadā atīva
duḥkhasaṃtaptāḥ na śamam ca upalebhire
6. vāsudevaḥ dāśārhaḥ baladevaḥ
sasātyakiḥ atha satyakaḥ tadā abhimanyoḥ
śrāddham akurvan atīva
duḥkhasaṃtaptāḥ śamam ca na upalebhire
6. Then Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), Dāśārha, Baladeva, and Sātyaki, along with Satyaka, performed the post-mortem ritual (śrāddha) for Abhimanyu. Deeply afflicted by sorrow, they found no peace.
तथैव पाण्डवा वीरा नगरे नागसाह्वये ।
नोपगच्छन्ति वै शान्तिमभिमन्युविनाकृताः ॥७॥
7. tathaiva pāṇḍavā vīrā nagare nāgasāhvaye ,
nopagacchanti vai śāntimabhimanyuvinākṛtāḥ.
7. tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ vīrāḥ nagare nāgasāhvaye
na upagacchanti vai śāntim abhimanyuvinākṛtāḥ
7. tathā eva abhimanyuvinākṛtāḥ vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ
nāgasāhvaye nagare vai śāntim na upagacchanti
7. Similarly, the heroic Pāṇḍavas in the city of Nāgasāhvaya (Hastināpura), deprived of Abhimanyu, found no peace.
सुबहूनि च राजेन्द्र दिवसानि विराटजा ।
नाभुङ्क्त पतिशोकार्ता तदभूत्करुणं महत् ।
कुक्षिस्थ एव तस्यास्तु स गर्भः संप्रलीयत ॥८॥
8. subahūni ca rājendra divasāni virāṭajā ,
nābhuṅkta patiśokārtā tadabhūtkaruṇaṁ mahat ,
kukṣistha eva tasyāstu sa garbhaḥ saṁpralīyata.
8. subahūni ca rāja-indra divasāni
virāṭa-jā na abhuṅkta pati-śoka-ārtā
tat abhūt karuṇam mahat kukṣisthaḥ
eva tasyāḥ tu saḥ garbhaḥ sampralīyata
8. rājendra subahūni divasāni ca
patiśokārtā virāṭajā na abhuṅkta tat
mahat karuṇam abhūt tasyāḥ kukṣisthaḥ
eva saḥ garbhaḥ tu sampralīyata
8. O king (rājendra), for many days, Uttara, the daughter of Virāṭa, afflicted by sorrow for her husband, did not eat. This was a great pity. Indeed, the embryo (garbha) within her womb dissolved.
आजगाम ततो व्यासो ज्ञात्वा दिव्येन चक्षुषा ।
आगम्य चाब्रवीद्धीमान्पृथां पृथुललोचनाम् ।
उत्तरां च महातेजाः शोकः संत्यज्यतामयम् ॥९॥
9. ājagāma tato vyāso jñātvā divyena cakṣuṣā ,
āgamya cābravīddhīmānpṛthāṁ pṛthulalocanām ,
uttarāṁ ca mahātejāḥ śokaḥ saṁtyajyatāmayam.
9. ājagāma tataḥ vyāsaḥ jñātvā divyena
cakṣuṣā āgamya ca abravīt dhīmān
pṛthām pṛthulalocanām uttarām
ca mahātejāḥ śokaḥ saṃtyajyatām ayam
9. tataḥ vyāsaḥ divyena cakṣuṣā jñātvā
ājagāma āgamya ca dhīmān mahātejāḥ
pṛthām pṛthulalocanām uttarām
ca abravīt ayam śokaḥ saṃtyajyatām
9. Then Vyāsa arrived, having perceived the situation with his divine eye. Having come, the wise and greatly energetic one spoke to wide-eyed Pṛthā (Kuntī) and to Uttarā: "Let this sorrow be given up!"
जनिष्यति महातेजाः पुत्रस्तव यशस्विनि ।
प्रभावाद्वासुदेवस्य मम व्याहरणादपि ।
पाण्डवानामयं चान्ते पालयिष्यति मेदिनीम् ॥१०॥
10. janiṣyati mahātejāḥ putrastava yaśasvini ,
prabhāvādvāsudevasya mama vyāharaṇādapi ,
pāṇḍavānāmayaṁ cānte pālayiṣyati medinīm.
10. janiṣyati mahātejāḥ putraḥ tava
yaśasvini prabhāvāt vāsudevasya
mama vyāharaṇāt api pāṇḍavānām
ayam ca ante pālayiṣyati medinīm
10. yaśasvini tava putraḥ janiṣyati
mahātejāḥ prabhāvāt vāsudevasya
ca api mama vyāharaṇāt ayam
ante pālayiṣyati medinīm pāṇḍavānām
10. O glorious one, your greatly radiant son will be born through the power of Vāsudeva and also by my declaration. And this one, in the end, will rule the earth for the Pāṇḍavas.
धनंजयं च संप्रेक्ष्य धर्मराजस्य पश्यतः ।
व्यासो वाक्यमुवाचेदं हर्षयन्निव भारत ॥११॥
11. dhanaṁjayaṁ ca saṁprekṣya dharmarājasya paśyataḥ ,
vyāso vākyamuvācedaṁ harṣayanniva bhārata.
11. dhanaṃjayaṃ ca saṃprekṣya dharmarājasya paśyataḥ
vyāsaḥ vākyam uvāca idam harṣayan iva bhārata
11. bhārata dhanaṃjayaṃ ca saṃprekṣya dharmarājasya
paśyataḥ vyāsaḥ vākyam idam uvāca harṣayan iva
11. And, having thoroughly observed Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) in the presence of the king of natural law (dharma) (Yudhiṣṭhira), Vyāsa spoke these words, as if bringing joy, O Bhārata.
पौत्रस्तव महाबाहो जनिष्यति महामनाः ।
पृथ्वीं सागरपर्यन्तां पालयिष्यति चैव ह ॥१२॥
12. pautrastava mahābāho janiṣyati mahāmanāḥ ,
pṛthvīṁ sāgaraparyantāṁ pālayiṣyati caiva ha.
12. pautraḥ tava mahābāho janiṣyati mahāmanāḥ
pṛthvīm sāgaraparyantām pālayiṣyati ca eva ha
12. mahābāho tava pautraḥ janiṣyati mahāmanāḥ ca
eva ha pṛthvīm sāgaraparyantām pālayiṣyati
12. O mighty-armed one, your noble-minded grandson will be born. And he will certainly rule the earth, extending all the way to the oceans.
तस्माच्छोकं कुरुश्रेष्ठ जहि त्वमरिकर्शन ।
विचार्यमत्र न हि ते सत्यमेतद्भविष्यति ॥१३॥
13. tasmācchokaṁ kuruśreṣṭha jahi tvamarikarśana ,
vicāryamatra na hi te satyametadbhaviṣyati.
13. tasmāt śokam kuruśreṣṭha jahi tvam arikarśana
vicāryam atra na hi te satyam etat bhaviṣyati
13. tasmāt kuruśreṣṭha arikarśana tvam śokam jahi
hi atra na te vicāryam etat satyam bhaviṣyati
13. Therefore, O best among the Kurus, O tormentor of enemies, abandon your grief. Indeed, there is nothing for you to ponder here; this will certainly come true.
यच्चापि वृष्णिवीरेण कृष्णेन कुरुनन्दन ।
पुरोक्तं तत्तथा भावि मा तेऽत्रास्तु विचारणा ॥१४॥
14. yaccāpi vṛṣṇivīreṇa kṛṣṇena kurunandana ,
puroktaṁ tattathā bhāvi mā te'trāstu vicāraṇā.
14. yat ca api vṛṣṇivīreṇa kṛṣṇena kurunandana purā
uktam tat tathā bhāvi mā te atra astu vicāraṇā
14. kurunandana yat ca api vṛṣṇivīreṇa kṛṣṇena purā
uktam tat tathā bhāvi te atra vicāraṇā mā astu
14. And whatever was stated previously by Kṛṣṇa, the hero of the Vṛṣṇis, O joy of the Kurus, that will surely come to pass exactly as predicted. Therefore, do not have any doubt concerning this.
विबुधानां गतो लोकानक्षयानात्मनिर्जितान् ।
न स शोच्यस्त्वया तात न चान्यैः कुरुभिस्तथा ॥१५॥
15. vibudhānāṁ gato lokānakṣayānātmanirjitān ,
na sa śocyastvayā tāta na cānyaiḥ kurubhistathā.
15. vibudhānām gataḥ lokān akṣayān ātmanirjitān na
saḥ śocyaḥ tvayā tāta na ca anyaiḥ kurubhiḥ tathā
15. tāta saḥ vibudhānām akṣayān ātmanirjitān lokān
gataḥ tvayā na śocyaḥ ca anyaiḥ kurubhiḥ tathā na
15. He has departed to the imperishable worlds of the gods, which were won by his own spiritual effort (ātman). He should not be grieved for by you, dear son, nor similarly by the other Kurus.
एवं पितामहेनोक्तो धर्मात्मा स धनंजयः ।
त्यक्त्वा शोकं महाराज हृष्टरूपोऽभवत्तदा ॥१६॥
16. evaṁ pitāmahenokto dharmātmā sa dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
tyaktvā śokaṁ mahārāja hṛṣṭarūpo'bhavattadā.
16. evam pitāmahena uktaḥ dharmātmā saḥ dhanañjayaḥ
tyaktvā śokam mahārāja hṛṣṭarūpaḥ abhavat tadā
16. mahārāja evam pitāmahena uktaḥ saḥ dharmātmā
dhanañjayaḥ tadā śokam tyaktvā hṛṣṭarūpaḥ abhavat
16. Thus addressed by his grandfather (Bhīṣma), that righteous-souled (dharmātman) Dhanañjaya, O great king, then abandoned his grief and became joyful.
पितापि तव धर्मज्ञ गर्भे तस्मिन्महामते ।
अवर्धत यथाकालं शुक्लपक्षे यथा शशी ॥१७॥
17. pitāpi tava dharmajña garbhe tasminmahāmate ,
avardhata yathākālaṁ śuklapakṣe yathā śaśī.
17. pitā api tava dharmajña garbhe tasmin mahāmate
avardhata yathākālam śuklapakṣe yathā śaśī
17. dharmajña mahāmate tava pitā api tasmin garbhe
yathākālam śuklapakṣe yathā śaśī avardhata
17. Your father, O knower of constitutional law (dharma), O highly intelligent one, also grew in that womb in due course, just as the moon (śaśī) grows during the bright fortnight.
ततः संचोदयामास व्यासो धर्मात्मजं नृपम् ।
अश्वमेधं प्रति तदा ततः सोऽन्तर्हितोऽभवत् ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ saṁcodayāmāsa vyāso dharmātmajaṁ nṛpam ,
aśvamedhaṁ prati tadā tataḥ so'ntarhito'bhavat.
18. tataḥ saṃcodayāmāsa vyāsaḥ dharmātmajam nṛpam
aśvamedham prati tadā tataḥ saḥ antarhitaḥ abhavat
18. tataḥ vyāsaḥ dharmātmajam nṛpam tadā aśvamedham
prati saṃcodayāmāsa tataḥ saḥ antarhitaḥ abhavat
18. Then, Vyasa encouraged the king, Yudhishthira, the son of dharma (dharma), concerning the aśvamedha (Vedic ritual). After that, he (Vyasa) vanished.
धर्मराजोऽपि मेधावी श्रुत्वा व्यासस्य तद्वचः ।
वित्तोपनयने तात चकार गमने मतिम् ॥१९॥
19. dharmarājo'pi medhāvī śrutvā vyāsasya tadvacaḥ ,
vittopanayane tāta cakāra gamane matim.
19. dharmarājaḥ api medhāvī śrutvā vyāsasya tat
vacaḥ vittopanayane tāta cakāra gamane matim
19. tāta medhāvī dharmarājaḥ api vyāsasya tat
vacaḥ śrutvā vittopanayane gamane matim cakāra
19. O dear one (tāta), the intelligent king Yudhishthira (dharma-rāja), having heard that speech of Vyasa, made up his mind to go for the acquisition of wealth.
