मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
अथ भार्यासहायः स फलान्यादाय वीर्यवान् ।
कठिनं पूरयामास ततः काष्ठान्यपाटयत् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
atha bhāryāsahāyaḥ sa phalānyādāya vīryavān ,
kaṭhinaṁ pūrayāmāsa tataḥ kāṣṭhānyapāṭayat.

vīryavān kaṭhinam pūrayām āsa tataḥ kāṣṭhāni apāṭayat
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then, that valorous man, accompanied by his wife, having collected fruits, filled his container, and thereafter split firewood."
तस्य पाटयतः काष्ठं स्वेदो वै समजायत ।
व्यायामेन च तेनास्य जज्ञे शिरसि वेदना ॥२॥
2. tasya pāṭayataḥ kāṣṭhaṁ svedo vai samajāyata ,
vyāyāmena ca tenāsya jajñe śirasi vedanā.
2. tasya pāṭayataḥ kāṣṭham svedaḥ vai samajāyata
vyāyāmena ca tena asya jajñe śirasi vedanā
2. As he was splitting wood, sweat indeed appeared. And because of that exertion, a pain developed in his head.
सोऽभिगम्य प्रियां भार्यामुवाच श्रमपीडितः ।
व्यायामेन ममानेन जाता शिरसि वेदना ॥३॥
3. so'bhigamya priyāṁ bhāryāmuvāca śramapīḍitaḥ ,
vyāyāmena mamānena jātā śirasi vedanā.
3. saḥ abhigamya priyām bhāryām uvāca śrama-pīḍitaḥ
vyāyāmena mama anena jātā śirasi vedanā
3. Overcome by fatigue, he approached his beloved wife and said, "Because of this exertion of mine, a pain has developed in my head."
अङ्गानि चैव सावित्रि हृदयं दूयतीव च ।
अस्वस्थमिव चात्मानं लक्षये मितभाषिणि ॥४॥
4. aṅgāni caiva sāvitri hṛdayaṁ dūyatīva ca ,
asvasthamiva cātmānaṁ lakṣaye mitabhāṣiṇi.
4. aṅgāni ca eva sāvitri hṛdayam dūyati iva ca
asvastham iva ca ātmānam lakṣaye mitabhāṣiṇi
4. And O Savitri, my limbs (aṅgāni) are aching, and my heart (hṛdayam) also feels distressed, as it were. O soft-spoken one (mitabhāṣiṇi), I perceive my self (ātman) as if unwell.
शूलैरिव शिरो विद्धमिदं संलक्षयाम्यहम् ।
तत्स्वप्तुमिच्छे कल्याणि न स्थातुं शक्तिरस्ति मे ॥५॥
5. śūlairiva śiro viddhamidaṁ saṁlakṣayāmyaham ,
tatsvaptumicche kalyāṇi na sthātuṁ śaktirasti me.
5. śūlaiḥ iva śiraḥ viddham idam saṃlakṣayāmi aham
tat svaptum icche kalyāṇi na sthātum śaktiḥ asti me
5. O blessed one (kalyāṇī), I perceive this head of mine as if it were pierced by spikes. Therefore, I wish to sleep; I do not have the strength (śakti) to stand.
समासाद्याथ सावित्री भर्तारमुपगूह्य च ।
उत्सङ्गेऽस्य शिरः कृत्वा निषसाद महीतले ॥६॥
6. samāsādyātha sāvitrī bhartāramupagūhya ca ,
utsaṅge'sya śiraḥ kṛtvā niṣasāda mahītale.
6. samāsādya atha sāvitrī bhartāram upagūhya ca
utsaṅge asya śiraḥ kṛtvā niṣasāda mahītale
6. Then Savitri approached her husband, embraced him, placed his head on her lap, and sat down on the ground.
ततः सा नारदवचो विमृशन्ती तपस्विनी ।
तं मुहूर्तं क्षणं वेलां दिवसं च युयोज ह ॥७॥
7. tataḥ sā nāradavaco vimṛśantī tapasvinī ,
taṁ muhūrtaṁ kṣaṇaṁ velāṁ divasaṁ ca yuyoja ha.
7. tataḥ sā nāradavacaḥ vimṛśantī tapasvinī tam
muhūrtam kṣaṇam velām divasam ca yuyoja ha
7. Then, that austere woman (Savitri), pondering Narada's words, indeed matched that particular moment, instant, time, and day (with what had been foretold).
मुहूर्तादिव चापश्यत्पुरुषं पीतवाससम् ।
बद्धमौलिं वपुष्मन्तमादित्यसमतेजसम् ॥८॥
8. muhūrtādiva cāpaśyatpuruṣaṁ pītavāsasam ,
baddhamauliṁ vapuṣmantamādityasamatejasam.
8. muhūrtāt iva ca apaśyat puruṣam pītavāsasam
baddhamoulim vapuṣmantam ādityasamatejasam
8. And just a moment later, she saw a person (puruṣa) who was yellow-robed, wearing a tied crown, possessing a magnificent body, and whose radiance was like that of the sun.
श्यामावदातं रक्ताक्षं पाशहस्तं भयावहम् ।
स्थितं सत्यवतः पार्श्वे निरीक्षन्तं तमेव च ॥९॥
9. śyāmāvadātaṁ raktākṣaṁ pāśahastaṁ bhayāvaham ,
sthitaṁ satyavataḥ pārśve nirīkṣantaṁ tameva ca.
9. śyāmāvadātam raktākṣam pāśahastam bhayāvaham
sthitam satyavataḥ pārśve nirīkṣantam tam eva ca
9. He was dark and radiant, red-eyed, holding a noose (pāśa) in his hand, and terrifying. He stood beside Satyavat, gazing intently at him.
तं दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय भर्तुर्न्यस्य शनैः शिरः ।
कृताञ्जलिरुवाचार्ता हृदयेन प्रवेपता ॥१०॥
10. taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya bharturnyasya śanaiḥ śiraḥ ,
kṛtāñjaliruvācārtā hṛdayena pravepatā.
10. tam dṛṣṭvā sahasā utthāya bhartuḥ nyasya śanaiḥ
śiraḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ uvāca ārtā hṛdayena pravepatā
10. Upon seeing him, she suddenly rose, gently placed her head on her husband's (lap), and, distressed, with folded hands, she spoke, her heart trembling.
दैवतं त्वाभिजानामि वपुरेतद्ध्यमानुषम् ।
कामया ब्रूहि मे देव कस्त्वं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥११॥
11. daivataṁ tvābhijānāmi vapuretaddhyamānuṣam ,
kāmayā brūhi me deva kastvaṁ kiṁ ca cikīrṣasi.
11. daivatam tvā abhijānāmi vapuḥ etat hi amānuṣam
kāmayā brūhi me deva kaḥ tvam kim ca cikīrṣasi
11. I recognize you as a deity, for this form (body) is indeed superhuman. By your will, please tell me, O god, who you are and what you intend to do.
यम उवाच ।
पतिव्रतासि सावित्रि तथैव च तपोन्विता ।
अतस्त्वामभिभाषामि विद्धि मां त्वं शुभे यमम् ॥१२॥
12. yama uvāca ,
pativratāsi sāvitri tathaiva ca taponvitā ,
atastvāmabhibhāṣāmi viddhi māṁ tvaṁ śubhe yamam.
12. yamaḥ uvāca pativratā asi sāvitri tathā eva ca tapas
anvitā ataḥ tvām abhibhāṣāmi viddhi mām tvam śubhe yamam
12. Yama spoke: "Savitri, you are a devoted wife (pativratā) and also endowed with ascetic devotion (tapas). Therefore, I am speaking to you. O auspicious one, know me as Yama."
अयं ते सत्यवान्भर्ता क्षीणायुः पार्थिवात्मजः ।
नेष्याम्येनमहं बद्ध्वा विद्ध्येतन्मे चिकीर्षितम् ॥१३॥
13. ayaṁ te satyavānbhartā kṣīṇāyuḥ pārthivātmajaḥ ,
neṣyāmyenamahaṁ baddhvā viddhyetanme cikīrṣitam.
13. ayam te satyavān bhartā kṣīṇāyuḥ pārthiva ātmajaḥ
neṣyāmi enam aham baddhvā viddhi etat me cikīrṣitam
13. This Satyavan, your husband, the son of a king, has reached the end of his life. I shall take him away, having bound him. Know this as my intention.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा पितृराजस्तां भगवान्स्वं चिकीर्षितम् ।
यथावत्सर्वमाख्यातुं तत्प्रियार्थं प्रचक्रमे ॥१४॥
14. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
ityuktvā pitṛrājastāṁ bhagavānsvaṁ cikīrṣitam ,
yathāvatsarvamākhyātuṁ tatpriyārthaṁ pracakrame.
14. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca iti uktvā pitṛrājaḥ tām bhagavān svam
cikīrṣitam yathāvat sarvam ākhyātum tatpriyārtham pracakrame
14. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having thus spoken to her, the venerable king of the ancestors (Yama) began to fully explain his intention for her sake.
अयं हि धर्मसंयुक्तो रूपवान्गुणसागरः ।
नार्हो मत्पुरुषैर्नेतुमतोऽस्मि स्वयमागतः ॥१५॥
15. ayaṁ hi dharmasaṁyukto rūpavānguṇasāgaraḥ ,
nārho matpuruṣairnetumato'smi svayamāgataḥ.
15. ayam hi dharmasaṃyuktaḥ rūpavān guṇasāgaraḥ na
arhaḥ matpuruṣaiḥ netum ataḥ asmi svayam āgataḥ
15. This man is indeed endowed with righteousness (dharma), handsome, and an ocean of virtues. He is not worthy to be led away by my servants; therefore, I myself have come.
ततः सत्यवतः कायात्पाशबद्धं वशं गतम् ।
अङ्गुष्ठमात्रं पुरुषं निश्चकर्ष यमो बलात् ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ satyavataḥ kāyātpāśabaddhaṁ vaśaṁ gatam ,
aṅguṣṭhamātraṁ puruṣaṁ niścakarṣa yamo balāt.
16. tataḥ satyavataḥ kāyāt pāśabaddham vaśam gatam
aṅguṣṭhamātram puruṣam niścakṛṣa yamaḥ balāt
16. Then, Yama forcibly pulled out from Satyavān's body a thumb-sized being (puruṣa) that was bound by a noose and had fallen under his control.
ततः समुद्धृतप्राणं गतश्वासं हतप्रभम् ।
निर्विचेष्टं शरीरं तद्बभूवाप्रियदर्शनम् ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ samuddhṛtaprāṇaṁ gataśvāsaṁ hataprabham ,
nirviceṣṭaṁ śarīraṁ tadbabhūvāpriyadarśanam.
17. tataḥ samuddhṛtaprāṇam gataśvāsam hataprabham
nirviceṣṭam śarīram tad babhūva apriyadarśanam
17. Then that body became unpleasant to behold, as its life (prāṇa) had been drawn out, its breath had departed, its luster was lost, and it was completely motionless.
यमस्तु तं तथा बद्ध्वा प्रयातो दक्षिणामुखः ।
सावित्री चापि दुःखार्ता यममेवान्वगच्छत ।
नियमव्रतसंसिद्धा महाभागा पतिव्रता ॥१८॥
18. yamastu taṁ tathā baddhvā prayāto dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ ,
sāvitrī cāpi duḥkhārtā yamamevānvagacchata ,
niyamavratasaṁsiddhā mahābhāgā pativratā.
18. yamaḥ tu tam tathā baddhvā prayātaḥ
dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ sāvitrī ca api
duḥkhārtā yamam eva anvagacchat
niyamavratasaṃsiddhā mahābhāgā pativratā
18. But Yama, having thus bound him, proceeded southward. And Sāvitrī, afflicted with sorrow, followed Yama. She was one who had perfected herself through discipline and vows (vrata), highly fortunate, and a devoted wife.
यम उवाच ।
निवर्त गच्छ सावित्रि कुरुष्वास्यौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ।
कृतं भर्तुस्त्वयानृण्यं यावद्गम्यं गतं त्वया ॥१९॥
19. yama uvāca ,
nivarta gaccha sāvitri kuruṣvāsyaurdhvadehikam ,
kṛtaṁ bhartustvayānṛṇyaṁ yāvadgamyaṁ gataṁ tvayā.
19. yamaḥ uvāca nivarta gaccha sāvitri kuruṣva asya aurdhvadehīkam
kṛtam bhartuḥ tvayā anṛṇyam yāvat gamyam gatam tvayā
19. Yama said: "Return, Sāvitrī, go and perform his post-mortem rites. You have repaid your debt to your husband. You have come as far as one may go."
सावित्र्युवाच ।
यत्र मे नीयते भर्ता स्वयं वा यत्र गच्छति ।
मयापि तत्र गन्तव्यमेष धर्मः सनातनः ॥२०॥
20. sāvitryuvāca ,
yatra me nīyate bhartā svayaṁ vā yatra gacchati ,
mayāpi tatra gantavyameṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.
20. sāvitrī uvāca yatra me nīyate bhartā svayam vā yatra
gacchati mayā api tatra gantavyam eṣaḥ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
20. Sāvitrī said: "Wherever my husband is led, or wherever he goes by himself, I must also go there. This is the eternal natural law (dharma)."
तपसा गुरुवृत्त्या च भर्तुः स्नेहाद्व्रतेन च ।
तव चैव प्रसादेन न मे प्रतिहता गतिः ॥२१॥
21. tapasā guruvṛttyā ca bhartuḥ snehādvratena ca ,
tava caiva prasādena na me pratihatā gatiḥ.
21. tapasā guruvṛttyā ca bhartuḥ snehāt vratena ca
tava ca eva prasādena na me pratihatā gatiḥ
21. By means of my austerity (tapas) and service to elders, by my love for my husband and my vows (vrata), and indeed by your grace, my path (gati) is not obstructed.
प्राहुः सप्तपदं मित्रं बुधास्तत्त्वार्थदर्शिनः ।
मित्रतां च पुरस्कृत्य किंचिद्वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु ॥२२॥
22. prāhuḥ saptapadaṁ mitraṁ budhāstattvārthadarśinaḥ ,
mitratāṁ ca puraskṛtya kiṁcidvakṣyāmi tacchṛṇu.
22. prāhuḥ saptapadam mitram budhāḥ tattvārthadarśinaḥ
mitratām ca puraskṛtya kiṃcit vakṣyāmi tat śṛṇu
22. The wise ones, those who discern the true meaning of reality, declare that a friend (mitram) is made through seven steps. Valuing this friendship, I will now say something; please listen to that.
नानात्मवन्तस्तु वने चरन्ति धर्मं च वासं च परिश्रमं च ।
विज्ञानतो धर्ममुदाहरन्ति तस्मात्सन्तो धर्ममाहुः प्रधानम् ॥२३॥
23. nānātmavantastu vane caranti; dharmaṁ ca vāsaṁ ca pariśramaṁ ca ,
vijñānato dharmamudāharanti; tasmātsanto dharmamāhuḥ pradhānam.
23. nānātmavantaḥ tu vane caranti
dharmam ca vāsam ca pariśramam ca
vijñānataḥ dharmam udāharanti
tasmāt santaḥ dharmam āhuḥ pradhānam
23. Indeed, those with diverse individual selves (ātman) roam in the forest, observing their natural law (dharma), their dwelling, and their endeavors. From their knowledge, they expound upon natural law (dharma); therefore, the wise proclaim natural law (dharma) as supreme.
एकस्य धर्मेण सतां मतेन सर्वे स्म तं मार्गमनुप्रपन्नाः ।
मा वै द्वितीयं मा तृतीयं च वाञ्छे तस्मात्सन्तो धर्ममाहुः प्रधानम् ॥२४॥
24. ekasya dharmeṇa satāṁ matena; sarve sma taṁ mārgamanuprapannāḥ ,
mā vai dvitīyaṁ mā tṛtīyaṁ ca vāñche; tasmātsanto dharmamāhuḥ pradhānam.
24. ekasya dharmeṇa satām matena sarve
sma tam mārgam anuprāpannāḥ mā vai
dvitīyam mā tṛtīyam ca vāñche
tasmāt santaḥ dharmam āhuḥ pradhānam
24. By the one natural law (dharma) and the considered opinion of the wise, all of us have indeed followed that path. May I surely not desire a second, nor a third (path). Therefore, the wise proclaim natural law (dharma) as supreme.
यम उवाच ।
निवर्त तुष्टोऽस्मि तवानया गिरा स्वराक्षरव्यञ्जनहेतुयुक्तया ।
वरं वृणीष्वेह विनास्य जीवितं ददानि ते सर्वमनिन्दिते वरम् ॥२५॥
25. yama uvāca ,
nivarta tuṣṭo'smi tavānayā girā; svarākṣaravyañjanahetuyuktayā ,
varaṁ vṛṇīṣveha vināsya jīvitaṁ; dadāni te sarvamanindite varam.
25. yama uvāca nivarta tuṣṭaḥ asmi tava
anayā girā svarākṣaravyañjanahetuyuktayā
varam vṛṇīṣva iha vinā asya
jīvitam dadāni te sarvam anindite varam
25. Yama said: 'Withdraw! I am pleased by this speech of yours, replete with proper accent, syllables, consonants, and logical reasoning. Choose a boon here; I shall grant you every boon, O blameless one, except for his life.'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
च्युतः स्वराज्याद्वनवासमाश्रितो विनष्टचक्षुः श्वशुरो ममाश्रमे ।
स लब्धचक्षुर्बलवान्भवेन्नृपस्तव प्रसादाज्ज्वलनार्कसंनिभः ॥२६॥
26. sāvitryuvāca ,
cyutaḥ svarājyādvanavāsamāśrito; vinaṣṭacakṣuḥ śvaśuro mamāśrame ,
sa labdhacakṣurbalavānbhavennṛpa;stava prasādājjvalanārkasaṁnibhaḥ.
26. sāvitrī uvāca cyutaḥ svarājyāt vanavāsam
āśritaḥ vinaṣṭacakṣuḥ śvaśuraḥ mama
āśrame saḥ labdhacakṣuḥ balavān bhavet
nṛpaḥ tava prasādāt jvalanārkasaṃnibhaḥ
26. Sāvitrī said, "My father-in-law, deprived of his kingdom and having resorted to living in the forest, has lost his sight in my hermitage (āśrama). May that king regain his sight and become strong, shining like fire and the sun, by your grace."
यम उवाच ।
ददानि ते सर्वमनिन्दिते वरं यथा त्वयोक्तं भविता च तत्तथा ।
तवाध्वना ग्लानिमिवोपलक्षये निवर्त गच्छस्व न ते श्रमो भवेत् ॥२७॥
27. yama uvāca ,
dadāni te sarvamanindite varaṁ; yathā tvayoktaṁ bhavitā ca tattathā ,
tavādhvanā glānimivopalakṣaye; nivarta gacchasva na te śramo bhavet.
27. yama uvāca dadāni te sarvam anindite
varam yathā tvayā uktam bhavitā ca tat
tathā tava adhvanā glānim iva upalakṣaye
nivarta gacchasva na te śramaḥ bhavet
27. Yama said, "O blameless one, I grant you all that you have requested; so let it be. I perceive a weariness along your path; turn back and go, so that you do not experience fatigue."
सावित्र्युवाच ।
कुतः श्रमो भर्तृसमीपतो हि मे यतो हि भर्ता मम सा गतिर्ध्रुवा ।
यतः पतिं नेष्यसि तत्र मे गतिः सुरेश भूयश्च वचो निबोध मे ॥२८॥
28. sāvitryuvāca ,
kutaḥ śramo bhartṛsamīpato hi me; yato hi bhartā mama sā gatirdhruvā ,
yataḥ patiṁ neṣyasi tatra me gatiḥ; sureśa bhūyaśca vaco nibodha me.
28. sāvitrī uvāca kutaḥ śramaḥ bhartṛsamīpataḥ
hi me yataḥ hi bhartā mama sā gatiḥ
dhruvā yataḥ patim neṣyasi tatra me
gatiḥ sureśa bhūyaḥ ca vacaḥ nibodha me
28. Sāvitrī said, "How can there be weariness for me when I am near my husband? Indeed, my husband is my constant support and destiny (gati). Wherever you lead my husband, that is my path. O lord of gods, please listen again to my words."
सतां सकृत्संगतमीप्सितं परं ततः परं मित्रमिति प्रचक्षते ।
न चाफलं सत्पुरुषेण संगतं ततः सतां संनिवसेत्समागमे ॥२९॥
29. satāṁ sakṛtsaṁgatamīpsitaṁ paraṁ; tataḥ paraṁ mitramiti pracakṣate ,
na cāphalaṁ satpuruṣeṇa saṁgataṁ; tataḥ satāṁ saṁnivasetsamāgame.
29. satām sakṛt saṅgatam īpsitam param
tataḥ param mitram iti pracakṣate
na ca aphalam satpuruṣeṇa saṅgatam
tataḥ satām saṃnivaset samāgame
29. "Even a single association (saṅgama) with good people is considered a supreme desire; thereafter, they call it friendship. Association (saṅgama) with a virtuous person (satpuruṣa) is never fruitless. Therefore, one should reside in the gathering of good people."
यम उवाच ।
मनोनुकूलं बुधबुद्धिवर्धनं त्वयाहमुक्तो वचनं हिताश्रयम् ।
विना पुनः सत्यवतोऽस्य जीवितं वरं द्वितीयं वरयस्व भामिनि ॥३०॥
30. yama uvāca ,
manonukūlaṁ budhabuddhivardhanaṁ; tvayāhamukto vacanaṁ hitāśrayam ,
vinā punaḥ satyavato'sya jīvitaṁ; varaṁ dvitīyaṁ varayasva bhāmini.
30. yama uvāca manaḥ anukūlam budhabuddhivarhanam
tvayā aham uktaḥ vacanam
hitaāśrayam vinā punaḥ satyavataḥ asya
jīvitam varam dvitīyam varayasva bhāmini
30. Yama said, 'You have spoken words that are pleasing to the mind, enhancing the intelligence of the wise, and based on what is beneficial. But, O radiant lady, choose a second boon again, excluding the life of this Satyavat.'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
हृतं पुरा मे श्वशुरस्य धीमतः स्वमेव राज्यं स लभेत पार्थिवः ।
जह्यात्स्वधर्मं न च मे गुरुर्यथा द्वितीयमेतं वरयामि ते वरम् ॥३१॥
31. sāvitryuvāca ,
hṛtaṁ purā me śvaśurasya dhīmataḥ; svameva rājyaṁ sa labheta pārthivaḥ ,
jahyātsvadharmaṁ na ca me gururyathā; dvitīyametaṁ varayāmi te varam.
31. sāvitrī uvāca hṛtam purā me śvaśurasya
dhīmataḥ svam eva rājyam saḥ labheta
pārthivaḥ jahyāt svadharmam na ca me guruḥ
yathā dvitīyam etam varayāmi te varam
31. Savitri said, 'May that king, my wise father-in-law, regain his own kingdom, which was previously seized. And may my father-in-law not forsake his intrinsic nature (svadharma). This is the second boon I ask of you.'
यम उवाच ।
स्वमेव राज्यं प्रतिपत्स्यतेऽचिरान्न च स्वधर्मात्परिहास्यते नृपः ।
कृतेन कामेन मया नृपात्मजे निवर्त गच्छस्व न ते श्रमो भवेत् ॥३२॥
32. yama uvāca ,
svameva rājyaṁ pratipatsyate'cirā;nna ca svadharmātparihāsyate nṛpaḥ ,
kṛtena kāmena mayā nṛpātmaje; nivarta gacchasva na te śramo bhavet.
32. yama uvāca svam eva rājyam pratipatsyate
acirāt na ca svadharmāt parihāsyate
nṛpaḥ kṛtena kāmena mayā nṛpātmaje
nivarta gacchasva na te śramaḥ bhavet
32. Yama said, 'The king will swiftly regain his own kingdom, and he will not deviate from his intrinsic nature (svadharma). O princess, your desire has been fulfilled by me. Turn back and go, there is no need for you to exert yourself further.'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
प्रजास्त्वयेमा नियमेन संयता नियम्य चैता नयसे न कामया ।
अतो यमत्वं तव देव विश्रुतं निबोध चेमां गिरमीरितां मया ॥३३॥
33. sāvitryuvāca ,
prajāstvayemā niyamena saṁyatā; niyamya caitā nayase na kāmayā ,
ato yamatvaṁ tava deva viśrutaṁ; nibodha cemāṁ giramīritāṁ mayā.
33. sāvitrī uvāca prajāḥ tvayā imāḥ niyamena
saṃyatāḥ niyamya ca etāḥ nayase na
kāmayā ataḥ yamatvam tava deva viśrutam
nibodha ca imām giram īritām mayā
33. Savitri said, 'These beings are restrained by you through natural law (niyama); you lead them by controlling them, not by desire. Therefore, your role as Yama (controller), O God, is well-known. Now, understand this speech spoken by me.'
अद्रोहः सर्वभूतेषु कर्मणा मनसा गिरा ।
अनुग्रहश्च दानं च सतां धर्मः सनातनः ॥३४॥
34. adrohaḥ sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā ,
anugrahaśca dānaṁ ca satāṁ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.
34. adrohaḥ sarvabhūteṣu karmaṇā manasā girā
anugrahaḥ ca dānam ca satām dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
34. For virtuous people, non-malice towards all beings, expressed through action (karma), thought, and speech, combined with compassion and giving (dāna), is the eternal natural law (dharma).
एवंप्रायश्च लोकोऽयं मनुष्याः शक्तिपेशलाः ।
सन्तस्त्वेवाप्यमित्रेषु दयां प्राप्तेषु कुर्वते ॥३५॥
35. evaṁprāyaśca loko'yaṁ manuṣyāḥ śaktipeśalāḥ ,
santastvevāpyamitreṣu dayāṁ prāpteṣu kurvate.
35. evamprāyaḥ ca lokaḥ ayam manuṣyāḥ śaktipeśalāḥ
santaḥ tu eva api amitreṣu dayām prāpteṣu kurvate
35. This world and its people are largely of this sort, human beings who are delicate in their strength. However, the virtuous (sat) ones, even towards enemies who have come into their power, indeed show compassion.
यम उवाच ।
पिपासितस्येव यथा भवेत्पयस्तथा त्वया वाक्यमिदं समीरितम् ।
विना पुनः सत्यवतोऽस्य जीवितं वरं वृणीष्वेह शुभे यदिच्छसि ॥३६॥
36. yama uvāca ,
pipāsitasyeva yathā bhavetpaya;stathā tvayā vākyamidaṁ samīritam ,
vinā punaḥ satyavato'sya jīvitaṁ; varaṁ vṛṇīṣveha śubhe yadicchasi.
36. yamaḥ uvāca pipāsitasya iva yathā bhavet
payaḥ tathā tvayā vākyam idam
samīritam vinā punaḥ satyavataḥ asya
jīvitam varam vṛṇīṣva iha śubhe yat icchasi
36. Yama said: 'The words you have spoken are like water to a thirsty person. However, O auspicious one, choose any other boon you desire here, but without the life of this Satyavan.'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
ममानपत्यः पृथिवीपतिः पिता भवेत्पितुः पुत्रशतं ममौरसम् ।
कुलस्य संतानकरं च यद्भवेत्तृतीयमेतं वरयामि ते वरम् ॥३७॥
37. sāvitryuvāca ,
mamānapatyaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ pitā; bhavetpituḥ putraśataṁ mamaurasam ,
kulasya saṁtānakaraṁ ca yadbhave;ttṛtīyametaṁ varayāmi te varam.
37. sāvitrī uvāca mama anapatyaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
pitā bhavet pituḥ putraśatam mama
aurasam kulasya saṃtānakaram ca yat
bhavet tṛtīyam etam varayāmi te varam
37. Savitri said: 'May my father, the king, who is childless, have a hundred legitimate sons, which would ensure the continuity of my family (kula). This third boon I ask from you.'
यम उवाच ।
कुलस्य संतानकरं सुवर्चसं शतं सुतानां पितुरस्तु ते शुभे ।
कृतेन कामेन नराधिपात्मजे निवर्त दूरं हि पथस्त्वमागता ॥३८॥
38. yama uvāca ,
kulasya saṁtānakaraṁ suvarcasaṁ; śataṁ sutānāṁ piturastu te śubhe ,
kṛtena kāmena narādhipātmaje; nivarta dūraṁ hi pathastvamāgatā.
38. yamaḥ uvāca kulasya saṃtānakaram
suvarcasam śatam sutānām pituḥ astu te
śubhe kṛtena kāmena narādhipātmaje
nivarta dūram hi pathaḥ tvam āgatā
38. Yama said: "O beautiful one, may your father have a hundred glorious sons who ensure the continuity of his family line. O daughter of the king, your desire has been fulfilled; therefore, return, for you have indeed come a long way from your path."
सावित्र्युवाच ।
न दूरमेतन्मम भर्तृसंनिधौ मनो हि मे दूरतरं प्रधावति ।
तथा व्रजन्नेव गिरं समुद्यतां मयोच्यमानां शृणु भूय एव च ॥३९॥
39. sāvitryuvāca ,
na dūrametanmama bhartṛsaṁnidhau; mano hi me dūrataraṁ pradhāvati ,
tathā vrajanneva giraṁ samudyatāṁ; mayocyamānāṁ śṛṇu bhūya eva ca.
39. sāvitrī uvāca na dūram etat mama
bhartṛsaṃnidhau manaḥ hi me dūrataram
pradhāvati tathā vrajan eva giram samudyatām
mayā ucyamānām śṛṇu bhūyaḥ eva ca
39. Savitri said: "This distance is not far for me when I am in the presence of my husband. Indeed, my mind rushes even further. Therefore, as you continue your journey, please listen once more to the words being spoken by me."
विवस्वतस्त्वं तनयः प्रतापवांस्ततो हि वैवस्वत उच्यसे बुधैः ।
शमेन धर्मेण च रञ्जिताः प्रजास्ततस्तवेहेश्वर धर्मराजता ॥४०॥
40. vivasvatastvaṁ tanayaḥ pratāpavāṁ;stato hi vaivasvata ucyase budhaiḥ ,
śamena dharmeṇa ca rañjitāḥ prajā;statastaveheśvara dharmarājatā.
40. vivasvataḥ tvam tanayaḥ pratāpavān
tataḥ hi vaivasvataḥ ucyase budhaiḥ
śamena dharmeṇa ca rañjitāḥ prajāḥ
tataḥ tava iha īśvara dharmarājatā
40. You are the powerful son of Vivasvat, and for that reason, you are indeed called Vaivasvata by the learned. People are contented by your tranquility and by your adherence to natural law (dharma). Therefore, O lord, your sovereignty as the king of natural law (dharma-rājatā) is established here.
आत्मन्यपि न विश्वासस्तावान्भवति सत्सु यः ।
तस्मात्सत्सु विशेषेण सर्वः प्रणयमिच्छति ॥४१॥
41. ātmanyapi na viśvāsastāvānbhavati satsu yaḥ ,
tasmātsatsu viśeṣeṇa sarvaḥ praṇayamicchati.
41. ātmani api na viśvāsaḥ tāvān bhavati satsu yaḥ
tasmāt satsu viśeṣeṇa sarvaḥ praṇayam icchati
41. One does not place as much trust in one's own self (ātman) as one does in virtuous people. Therefore, everyone especially seeks affection and reliance from the virtuous.
सौहृदात्सर्वभूतानां विश्वासो नाम जायते ।
तस्मात्सत्सु विशेषेण विश्वासं कुरुते जनः ॥४२॥
42. sauhṛdātsarvabhūtānāṁ viśvāso nāma jāyate ,
tasmātsatsu viśeṣeṇa viśvāsaṁ kurute janaḥ.
42. sauhṛdāt sarvabhūtānām viśvāsaḥ nāma jāyate
tasmāt satsu viśeṣeṇa viśvāsam kurute janaḥ
42. Trust indeed arises from the goodwill (sauhṛda) towards all beings. Therefore, people place special trust in the virtuous.
यम उवाच ।
उदाहृतं ते वचनं यदङ्गने शुभे न तादृक्त्वदृते मया श्रुतम् ।
अनेन तुष्टोऽस्मि विनास्य जीवितं वरं चतुर्थं वरयस्व गच्छ च ॥४३॥
43. yama uvāca ,
udāhṛtaṁ te vacanaṁ yadaṅgane; śubhe na tādṛktvadṛte mayā śrutam ,
anena tuṣṭo'smi vināsya jīvitaṁ; varaṁ caturthaṁ varayasva gaccha ca.
43. yamaḥ uvāca udāhṛtam te vacanam yat
aṅgane śubhe na tādṛk tvat ṛte mayā
śrutam anena tuṣṭaḥ asmi vinā asya jīvitam
varam caturtham varayasva gaccha ca
43. Yama said: O beautiful and auspicious lady, I have never heard such words spoken by anyone other than you. I am pleased by this; therefore, choose a fourth boon, but without his life, and depart.
सावित्र्युवाच ।
ममात्मजं सत्यवतस्तथौरसं भवेदुभाभ्यामिह यत्कुलोद्वहम् ।
शतं सुतानां बलवीर्यशालिनामिदं चतुर्थं वरयामि ते वरम् ॥४४॥
44. sāvitryuvāca ,
mamātmajaṁ satyavatastathaurasaṁ; bhavedubhābhyāmiha yatkulodvaham ,
śataṁ sutānāṁ balavīryaśālinā;midaṁ caturthaṁ varayāmi te varam.
44. sāvitrī uvāca mama ātmajam satyavataḥ
tathā aurasam bhavet ubhābhyām iha
yat kulodvaham śatam sutānām balavīryaśālinām
idam caturtham varayāmi te varam
44. Savitri said: May my son Satyavan have a hundred legitimate sons, possessed of strength and valor, who would perpetuate the lineage for both of us in this world. This is the fourth boon I request from you.
यम उवाच ।
शतं सुतानां बलवीर्यशालिनां भविष्यति प्रीतिकरं तवाबले ।
परिश्रमस्ते न भवेन्नृपात्मजे निवर्त दूरं हि पथस्त्वमागता ॥४५॥
45. yama uvāca ,
śataṁ sutānāṁ balavīryaśālināṁ; bhaviṣyati prītikaraṁ tavābale ,
pariśramaste na bhavennṛpātmaje; nivarta dūraṁ hi pathastvamāgatā.
45. yamaḥ uvāca śatam sutānām balavīryaśālinām
bhaviṣyati prītikarām tava
abale pariśramaḥ te na bhavet nṛpātmaje
nivarta dūram hi pathaḥ tvam āgatā
45. Yama said: O gentle lady, a hundred sons endowed with strength and valor will be born to you, bringing delight. O daughter of a king, may you not experience fatigue. For you have indeed come far from the path; turn back.
सावित्र्युवाच ।
सतां सदा शाश्वती धर्मवृत्तिः सन्तो न सीदन्ति न च व्यथन्ति ।
सतां सद्भिर्नाफलः संगमोऽस्ति सद्भ्यो भयं नानुवर्तन्ति सन्तः ॥४६॥
46. sāvitryuvāca ,
satāṁ sadā śāśvatī dharmavṛttiḥ; santo na sīdanti na ca vyathanti ,
satāṁ sadbhirnāphalaḥ saṁgamo'sti; sadbhyo bhayaṁ nānuvartanti santaḥ.
46. sāvitrī uvāca satām sadā śāśvatī
dharma-vṛttiḥ santaḥ na sīdanti na ca vyathanti
satām sadbhiḥ na aphalaḥ saṅgamaḥ asti
sadbhyaḥ bhayam na anuvartanti santaḥ
46. Savitri said: The righteous conduct (dharmavṛtti) of the virtuous is always eternal. The good do not despair nor are they troubled. The association of the virtuous with other virtuous people is never without benefit. The virtuous do not cause fear, nor do they themselves succumb to fear.
सन्तो हि सत्येन नयन्ति सूर्यं सन्तो भूमिं तपसा धारयन्ति ।
सन्तो गतिर्भूतभव्यस्य राजन्सतां मध्ये नावसीदन्ति सन्तः ॥४७॥
47. santo hi satyena nayanti sūryaṁ; santo bhūmiṁ tapasā dhārayanti ,
santo gatirbhūtabhavyasya rāja;nsatāṁ madhye nāvasīdanti santaḥ.
47. santaḥ hi satyena nayanti sūryam
santaḥ bhūmim tapasā dhārayanti
santaḥ gatiḥ bhūta-bhavyasya rājan
satām madhye na avasīdanti santaḥ
47. Indeed, the virtuous move the sun by truth, and they sustain the earth through their austerity (tapas). O King, the virtuous are the refuge for all that has been and all that will be. Among the virtuous, good people never despair.
आर्यजुष्टमिदं वृत्तमिति विज्ञाय शाश्वतम् ।
सन्तः परार्थं कुर्वाणा नावेक्षन्ते प्रतिक्रियाम् ॥४८॥
48. āryajuṣṭamidaṁ vṛttamiti vijñāya śāśvatam ,
santaḥ parārthaṁ kurvāṇā nāvekṣante pratikriyām.
48. ārya-juṣṭam idam vṛttam iti vijñāya śāśvatam
santaḥ parārtham kurvāṇā na avekṣante pratikriyām
48. Realizing that this conduct (vṛtta) is eternally cherished by the noble, the virtuous, while acting for the sake of others, do not expect any recompense.
न च प्रसादः सत्पुरुषेषु मोघो न चाप्यर्थो नश्यति नापि मानः ।
यस्मादेतन्नियतं सत्सु नित्यं तस्मात्सन्तो रक्षितारो भवन्ति ॥४९॥
49. na ca prasādaḥ satpuruṣeṣu mogho; na cāpyartho naśyati nāpi mānaḥ ,
yasmādetanniyataṁ satsu nityaṁ; tasmātsanto rakṣitāro bhavanti.
49. na ca prasādaḥ sat-puruṣeṣu moghaḥ
na ca api arthaḥ naśyati na api
mānaḥ yasmāt etat niyatam satsu nityam
tasmāt santaḥ rakṣitāraḥ bhavanti
49. The favor shown towards good people (puruṣa) is never in vain, nor does their purpose get lost, nor their honor. Because this quality is always fixed among the virtuous, therefore the virtuous become protectors.
यम उवाच ।
यथा यथा भाषसि धर्मसंहितं मनोनुकूलं सुपदं महार्थवत् ।
तथा तथा मे त्वयि भक्तिरुत्तमा वरं वृणीष्वाप्रतिमं यतव्रते ॥५०॥
50. yama uvāca ,
yathā yathā bhāṣasi dharmasaṁhitaṁ; manonukūlaṁ supadaṁ mahārthavat ,
tathā tathā me tvayi bhaktiruttamā; varaṁ vṛṇīṣvāpratimaṁ yatavrate.
50. yamaḥ uvāca yathā yathā bhāṣasi
dharmasaṃhitam manonukūlam supadam mahārthavat
tathā tathā me tvayi bhaktiḥ uttamā
varam vṛṇīṣva apratimam yatavrate
50. Yama said: 'The more you speak words that are in accordance with natural law (dharma), pleasing to the mind, excellent, and full of great meaning, the more my supreme devotion (bhakti) for you grows. Therefore, O one who has observed vows, choose an unparalleled boon.'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
न तेऽपवर्गः सुकृताद्विनाकृतस्तथा यथान्येषु वरेषु मानद ।
वरं वृणे जीवतु सत्यवानयं यथा मृता ह्येवमहं विना पतिम् ॥५१॥
51. sāvitryuvāca ,
na te'pavargaḥ sukṛtādvinākṛta;stathā yathānyeṣu vareṣu mānada ,
varaṁ vṛṇe jīvatu satyavānayaṁ; yathā mṛtā hyevamahaṁ vinā patim.
51. sāvitrī uvāca na te apavargaḥ sukṛtāt
vinākṛtaḥ tathā yathā anyeṣu vareṣu
mānada varam vṛṇe jīvatu satyavān
ayam yathā mṛtā hi evam aham vinā patim
51. Savitri said: 'O bestower of honor, the fulfillment of your merit from good deeds is not complete without granting a boon, just as is the case with other boons. I choose this boon: let Satyavan live, for without my husband, I am truly like one dead.'
न कामये भर्तृविनाकृता सुखं न कामये भर्तृविनाकृता दिवम् ।
न कामये भर्तृविनाकृता श्रियं न भर्तृहीना व्यवसामि जीवितुम् ॥५२॥
52. na kāmaye bhartṛvinākṛtā sukhaṁ; na kāmaye bhartṛvinākṛtā divam ,
na kāmaye bhartṛvinākṛtā śriyaṁ; na bhartṛhīnā vyavasāmi jīvitum.
52. na kāmaye bhartṛvinākṛtā sukham
na kāmaye bhartṛvinākṛtā divam
na kāmaye bhartṛvinākṛtā śriyam
na bhartṛhīnā vyavasāmi jīvitum
52. I do not desire happiness if I am separated from my husband; I do not desire heaven if I am separated from my husband; I do not desire prosperity if I am separated from my husband; nor do I endeavor to live without my husband.
वरातिसर्गः शतपुत्रता मम त्वयैव दत्तो ह्रियते च मे पतिः ।
वरं वृणे जीवतु सत्यवानयं तवैव सत्यं वचनं भविष्यति ॥५३॥
53. varātisargaḥ śataputratā mama; tvayaiva datto hriyate ca me patiḥ ,
varaṁ vṛṇe jīvatu satyavānayaṁ; tavaiva satyaṁ vacanaṁ bhaviṣyati.
53. vara atisargaḥ śataputratā mama
tvayā eva dattaḥ hriyate ca me patiḥ
varam vṛṇe jīvatu satyavān ayam
tava eva satyam vacanam bhaviṣyati
53. The granting of the boon for me to have a hundred sons was given by you yourself, yet my husband is being taken away. I choose this boon: let Satyavan live, and then your word will truly become true.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु तान्पाशान्मुक्त्वा वैवस्वतो यमः ।
धर्मराजः प्रहृष्टात्मा सावित्रीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥५४॥
54. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tathetyuktvā tu tānpāśānmuktvā vaivasvato yamaḥ ,
dharmarājaḥ prahṛṣṭātmā sāvitrīmidamabravīt.
54. Mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | tathā iti
uktvā tu tān pāśān muktvā
vaivasvataḥ yamaḥ | dharmarājaḥ
prahṛṣṭātmā sāvitrīm idam abravīt
54. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having said, "So be it," Yama, the son of Vivasvān and the king of justice (dharma), with a joyous heart, released those nooses and said this to Sāvitrī.
एष भद्रे मया मुक्तो भर्ता ते कुलनन्दिनि ।
अरोगस्तव नेयश्च सिद्धार्थश्च भविष्यति ॥५५॥
55. eṣa bhadre mayā mukto bhartā te kulanandini ,
arogastava neyaśca siddhārthaśca bhaviṣyati.
55. eṣaḥ bhadre mayā muktaḥ bhartā te kulanandinī |
arogaḥ tava neyaḥ ca siddhārthaḥ ca bhaviṣyati
55. Yama said: "O auspicious one, O delight of your family, this husband of yours has been released by me. He will be free from disease, and you may lead him back; he will also be one whose purpose is accomplished."
चतुर्वर्षशतं चायुस्त्वया सार्धमवाप्स्यति ।
इष्ट्वा यज्ञैश्च धर्मेण ख्यातिं लोके गमिष्यति ॥५६॥
56. caturvarṣaśataṁ cāyustvayā sārdhamavāpsyati ,
iṣṭvā yajñaiśca dharmeṇa khyātiṁ loke gamiṣyati.
56. caturvarṣaśatam ca āyuḥ tvayā sārdham avāpsyati |
iṣṭvā yajñaiḥ ca dharmeṇa khyātim loke gamiṣyati
56. "He will attain a life of four hundred years along with you. Having performed sacrifices (yajñas) in accordance with natural law (dharma), he will achieve fame in the world."
त्वयि पुत्रशतं चैव सत्यवाञ्जनयिष्यति ।
ते चापि सर्वे राजानः क्षत्रियाः पुत्रपौत्रिणः ।
ख्यातास्त्वन्नामधेयाश्च भविष्यन्तीह शाश्वताः ॥५७॥
57. tvayi putraśataṁ caiva satyavāñjanayiṣyati ,
te cāpi sarve rājānaḥ kṣatriyāḥ putrapautriṇaḥ ,
khyātāstvannāmadheyāśca bhaviṣyantīha śāśvatāḥ.
57. tvayi putraśatam ca eva satyavān
janayiṣyati | te ca api sarve rājānaḥ
kṣatriyāḥ putrapautriṇaḥ | khyātāḥ
tvatnāmadheyāḥ ca bhaviṣyanti iha śāśvatāḥ
57. "Through you, Satyavān will father a hundred sons. And all those kings, who will be warriors with sons and grandsons, will become renowned by your name and remain eternal here."
पितुश्च ते पुत्रशतं भविता तव मातरि ।
मालव्यां मालवा नाम शाश्वताः पुत्रपौत्रिणः ।
भ्रातरस्ते भविष्यन्ति क्षत्रियास्त्रिदशोपमाः ॥५८॥
58. pituśca te putraśataṁ bhavitā tava mātari ,
mālavyāṁ mālavā nāma śāśvatāḥ putrapautriṇaḥ ,
bhrātaraste bhaviṣyanti kṣatriyāstridaśopamāḥ.
58. pituḥ ca te putraśatam bhavitā tava
mātari mālavyām mālavāḥ nāma
śāśvatāḥ putrapautriṇaḥ bhrātaraḥ te
bhaviṣyanti kṣatriyāḥ tridaśopamāḥ
58. And your father-in-law will have a hundred sons born from your mother-in-law, Mālavī. These sons will be known as Mālavās, perpetual, and blessed with sons and grandsons. Moreover, your brothers will be Kṣatriyas, comparable to the gods.
एवं तस्यै वरं दत्त्वा धर्मराजः प्रतापवान् ।
निवर्तयित्वा सावित्रीं स्वमेव भवनं ययौ ॥५९॥
59. evaṁ tasyai varaṁ dattvā dharmarājaḥ pratāpavān ,
nivartayitvā sāvitrīṁ svameva bhavanaṁ yayau.
59. evam tasyai varam dattvā dharmarājaḥ pratāpavān
nivartayitvā sāvitrīm svam eva bhavanam yayau
59. Thus, after granting her the boon, the powerful king of (dharma) justice (Dharmarāja) sent Sāvitrī back and returned to his own abode.
सावित्र्यपि यमे याते भर्तारं प्रतिलभ्य च ।
जगाम तत्र यत्रास्या भर्तुः शावं कलेवरम् ॥६०॥
60. sāvitryapi yame yāte bhartāraṁ pratilabhya ca ,
jagāma tatra yatrāsyā bhartuḥ śāvaṁ kalevaram.
60. sāvitrī api yame yāte bhartāram pratilabhyā ca
jagāma tatra yatra asyāḥ bhartuḥ śāvam kalevaram
60. And Sāvitrī, after Yama had departed and she had regained her husband (Satyavān), went to the spot where her husband's lifeless body (kalevaram) lay.
सा भूमौ प्रेक्ष्य भर्तारमुपसृत्योपगूह्य च ।
उत्सङ्गे शिर आरोप्य भूमावुपविवेश ह ॥६१॥
61. sā bhūmau prekṣya bhartāramupasṛtyopagūhya ca ,
utsaṅge śira āropya bhūmāvupaviveśa ha.
61. sā bhūmau prekṣya bhartāram upasṛtya upagūhya
ca utsaṅge śiraḥ āropyā bhūmau upaviveśa ha
61. She saw her husband on the ground, and having approached and embraced him, she placed his head on her lap and then sat down on the ground.
संज्ञां च सत्यवाँल्लब्ध्वा सावित्रीमभ्यभाषत ।
प्रोष्यागत इव प्रेम्णा पुनः पुनरुदीक्ष्य वै ॥६२॥
62. saṁjñāṁ ca satyavāँllabdhvā sāvitrīmabhyabhāṣata ,
proṣyāgata iva premṇā punaḥ punarudīkṣya vai.
62. saṃjñām ca satyavān labdhvā sāvitrīm abhyabhāṣata
| proṣya āgataḥ iva premṇā punaḥ punaḥ udīkṣya vai
62. Satyavān, having regained his consciousness, addressed Sāvitrī. He gazed at her again and again with love, like one who has returned from a journey.
सत्यवानुवाच ।
सुचिरं बत सुप्तोऽस्मि किमर्थं नावबोधितः ।
क्व चासौ पुरुषः श्यामो योऽसौ मां संचकर्ष ह ॥६३॥
63. satyavānuvāca ,
suciraṁ bata supto'smi kimarthaṁ nāvabodhitaḥ ,
kva cāsau puruṣaḥ śyāmo yo'sau māṁ saṁcakarṣa ha.
63. satyavān uvāca | suciram bata
suptaḥ asmi kimartham na
avabodhitaḥ | kva ca asau puruṣaḥ
śyāmaḥ yaḥ asau mām saṃcakarṣa ha
63. Satyavān said, "Alas, I have been sleeping for a very long time! Why was I not awakened? And where is that dark-skinned person (puruṣa) who dragged me away?"
सावित्र्युवाच ।
सुचिरं बत सुप्तोऽसि ममाङ्के पुरुषर्षभ ।
गतः स भगवान्देवः प्रजासंयमनो यमः ॥६४॥
64. sāvitryuvāca ,
suciraṁ bata supto'si mamāṅke puruṣarṣabha ,
gataḥ sa bhagavāndevaḥ prajāsaṁyamano yamaḥ.
64. sāvitrī uvāca | suciram bata suptaḥ asi mama aṅke puruṣa
ṛṣabha | gataḥ sa bhagavān devaḥ prajāsaṃyamanaḥ yamaḥ
64. Sāvitrī said, "Alas, O best among men (puruṣa), you were sleeping for a very long time in my lap! That venerable god, Yama, the controller of all creatures, has departed."
विश्रान्तोऽसि महाभाग विनिद्रश्च नृपात्मज ।
यदि शक्यं समुत्तिष्ठ विगाढां पश्य शर्वरीम् ॥६५॥
65. viśrānto'si mahābhāga vinidraśca nṛpātmaja ,
yadi śakyaṁ samuttiṣṭha vigāḍhāṁ paśya śarvarīm.
65. viśrāntaḥ asi mahābhāga vinidraḥ ca nṛpa ātmaja
| yadi śakyam samuttiṣṭha vigāḍhām paśya śarvarīm
65. "You have rested, O greatly blessed one, and you are now awake, O prince. If it is possible, please rise and see how far advanced the night is."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
उपलभ्य ततः संज्ञां सुखसुप्त इवोत्थितः ।
दिशः सर्वा वनान्तांश्च निरीक्ष्योवाच सत्यवान् ॥६६॥
66. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
upalabhya tataḥ saṁjñāṁ sukhasupta ivotthitaḥ ,
diśaḥ sarvā vanāntāṁśca nirīkṣyovāca satyavān.

utthitaḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ vanāntān ca nirīkṣya uvāca satyavān
66. Mārkaṇḍeya said: SatyaVān, having then regained consciousness, as if awakened from a pleasant sleep, looked at all directions and the forest edges, and then spoke.
फलाहारोऽस्मि निष्क्रान्तस्त्वया सह सुमध्यमे ।
ततः पाटयतः काष्ठं शिरसो मे रुजाभवत् ॥६७॥
67. phalāhāro'smi niṣkrāntastvayā saha sumadhyame ,
tataḥ pāṭayataḥ kāṣṭhaṁ śiraso me rujābhavat.
67. phalāhāraḥ asmi niṣkrāntaḥ tvayā saha sumadhyame
tataḥ pāṭayataḥ kāṣṭham śirasaḥ me rujā abhavat
67. O fair-waisted one, I, a consumer of fruits, went out with you. Then, while I was splitting wood, a pain (rujā) arose in my head.
शिरोभितापसंतप्तः स्थातुं चिरमशक्नुवन् ।
तवोत्सङ्गे प्रसुप्तोऽहमिति सर्वं स्मरे शुभे ॥६८॥
68. śirobhitāpasaṁtaptaḥ sthātuṁ ciramaśaknuvan ,
tavotsaṅge prasupto'hamiti sarvaṁ smare śubhe.
68. śirobhitāpasaṃtaptaḥ sthātum ciram aśaknuvan tava
utsaṅge prasuptaḥ aham iti sarvam smare śubhe
68. Afflicted and burning with a severe headache, and unable to stand for long, I slept in your lap. O auspicious one, I remember all of this.
त्वयोपगूढस्य च मे निद्रयापहृतं मनः ।
ततोऽपश्यं तमो घोरं पुरुषं च महौजसम् ॥६९॥
69. tvayopagūḍhasya ca me nidrayāpahṛtaṁ manaḥ ,
tato'paśyaṁ tamo ghoraṁ puruṣaṁ ca mahaujasam.
69. tvayā upagūḍhasya ca me nidrayā apahṛtam manaḥ
tataḥ apaśyam tamaḥ ghoram puruṣam ca mahaujasam
69. And my mind, having been embraced by you, was then carried away by sleep. Thereafter, I saw a terrible darkness and a supreme cosmic person (puruṣa) of great splendor.
तद्यदि त्वं विजानासि किं तद्ब्रूहि सुमध्यमे ।
स्वप्नो मे यदि वा दृष्टो यदि वा सत्यमेव तत् ॥७०॥
70. tadyadi tvaṁ vijānāsi kiṁ tadbrūhi sumadhyame ,
svapno me yadi vā dṛṣṭo yadi vā satyameva tat.
70. tat yadi tvam vijānāsi kim tat brūhi sumadhyame
svapnaḥ me yadi vā dṛṣṭaḥ yadi vā satyam eva tat
70. So, if you know this, O slender-waisted one, tell me what it is. Was it a dream I saw, or is it truly real?
तमुवाचाथ सावित्री रजनी व्यवगाहते ।
श्वस्ते सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्यास्यामि नृपात्मज ॥७१॥
71. tamuvācātha sāvitrī rajanī vyavagāhate ,
śvaste sarvaṁ yathāvṛttamākhyāsyāmi nṛpātmaja.
71. tam uvāca atha sāvitrī rajanī vyavagāhate śvaḥ
te sarvam yathāvṛttam ākhyāsyāmi nṛpātmaja
71. Sāvitrī then said to him, "The night is far advanced. Tomorrow, O son of the king, I will tell you everything that has occurred."
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते पितरौ पश्य सुव्रत ।
विगाढा रजनी चेयं निवृत्तश्च दिवाकरः ॥७२॥
72. uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṁ te pitarau paśya suvrata ,
vigāḍhā rajanī ceyaṁ nivṛttaśca divākaraḥ.
72. uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha bhadram te pitarau paśya suvrata
vigāḍhā rajanī ca iyam nivṛttaḥ ca divākaraḥ
72. Get up, get up! May all be well with you, O man of good vows (suvrata); go see your parents. This night is far advanced, and the sun has set.
नक्तंचराश्चरन्त्येते हृष्टाः क्रूराभिभाषिणः ।
श्रूयन्ते पर्णशब्दाश्च मृगाणां चरतां वने ॥७३॥
73. naktaṁcarāścarantyete hṛṣṭāḥ krūrābhibhāṣiṇaḥ ,
śrūyante parṇaśabdāśca mṛgāṇāṁ caratāṁ vane.
73. naktaṃcarāḥ caranti ete hṛṣṭāḥ krūrābhibhāṣiṇaḥ
śrūyante parṇaśabdāḥ ca mṛgāṇām caratām vane
73. These nocturnal creatures, joyful and making harsh sounds, are roaming. And the rustling of leaves is heard from the wild animals moving about in the forest.
एताः शिवा घोरनादा दिशं दक्षिणपश्चिमाम् ।
आस्थाय विरुवन्त्युग्राः कम्पयन्त्यो मनो मम ॥७४॥
74. etāḥ śivā ghoranādā diśaṁ dakṣiṇapaścimām ,
āsthāya viruvantyugrāḥ kampayantyo mano mama.
74. etāḥ śivāḥ ghoranādāḥ diśam dakṣiṇapaścimām
āsthāya viruvanti ugrāḥ kampayantyaḥ manaḥ mama
74. These fierce jackals, with their terrible cries, are positioned in the south-western direction, wailing and making my mind tremble.
सत्यवानुवाच ।
वनं प्रतिभयाकारं घनेन तमसा वृतम् ।
न विज्ञास्यसि पन्थानं गन्तुं चैव न शक्ष्यसि ॥७५॥
75. satyavānuvāca ,
vanaṁ pratibhayākāraṁ ghanena tamasā vṛtam ,
na vijñāsyasi panthānaṁ gantuṁ caiva na śakṣyasi.
75. satyavān uvāca vanam pratibhayākāram ghanena tamasā
vṛtam na vijñāsyasi panthānam gantum ca eva na śakṣyasi
75. Satyavan said, 'The forest has a terrifying appearance, enveloped in dense darkness. You will not recognize the path, nor will you be able to travel.'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
अस्मिन्नद्य वने दग्धे शुष्कवृक्षः स्थितो ज्वलन् ।
वायुना धम्यमानोऽग्निर्दृश्यतेऽत्र क्वचित्क्वचित् ॥७६॥
76. sāvitryuvāca ,
asminnadya vane dagdhe śuṣkavṛkṣaḥ sthito jvalan ,
vāyunā dhamyamāno'gnirdṛśyate'tra kvacitkvacit.
76. sāvitrī uvāca asmin adya vane dagdhe śuṣkavṛkṣaḥ sthitaḥ
jvalan vāyunā dhamyamānaḥ agniḥ dṛśyate atra kvacit kvacit
76. Savitri said, 'In this now-burnt forest, a dry tree stands ablaze. Fanned by the wind, the fire can be seen here and there.'
ततोऽग्निमानयित्वेह ज्वालयिष्यामि सर्वतः ।
काष्ठानीमानि सन्तीह जहि संतापमात्मनः ॥७७॥
77. tato'gnimānayitveha jvālayiṣyāmi sarvataḥ ,
kāṣṭhānīmāni santīha jahi saṁtāpamātmanaḥ.
77. tataḥ agnim ānayitvā iha jvālayiṣyāmi sarvataḥ
kāṣṭhāni imāni santi iha jahi saṃtāpam ātmanaḥ
77. Then, I will bring fire here and ignite it everywhere. These logs are present here; abandon your inner distress (ātman).
यदि नोत्सहसे गन्तुं सरुजं त्वाभिलक्षये ।
न च ज्ञास्यसि पन्थानं तमसा संवृते वने ॥७८॥
78. yadi notsahase gantuṁ sarujaṁ tvābhilakṣaye ,
na ca jñāsyasi panthānaṁ tamasā saṁvṛte vane.
78. yadi na utsahase gantum sa-rujam tvā abhilakṣaye
na ca jñāsyasi panthānam tamasā saṃvṛte vane
78. If you are not able to go, I perceive you to be in pain. And you will not know the path in the forest, which is enveloped by darkness.
श्वः प्रभाते वने दृश्ये यास्यावोऽनुमते तव ।
वसावेह क्षपामेतां रुचितं यदि तेऽनघ ॥७९॥
79. śvaḥ prabhāte vane dṛśye yāsyāvo'numate tava ,
vasāveha kṣapāmetāṁ rucitaṁ yadi te'nagha.
79. śvaḥ prabhāte vane dṛśye yāsyāvaḥ anumate tava
vasāvaḥ iha kṣapām etām rucitam yadi te anagha
79. Tomorrow morning, when it is visible (daylight), we two shall go to the forest with your permission. Let us stay here for this night, if it is agreeable to you, O sinless one.
सत्यवानुवाच ।
शिरोरुजा निवृत्ता मे स्वस्थान्यङ्गानि लक्षये ।
मातापितृभ्यामिच्छामि संगमं त्वत्प्रसादजम् ॥८०॥
80. satyavānuvāca ,
śirorujā nivṛttā me svasthānyaṅgāni lakṣaye ,
mātāpitṛbhyāmicchāmi saṁgamaṁ tvatprasādajam.
80. satyavān uvāca śiraḥ-rujā nivṛttā me svasthāni aṅgāni
lakṣaye mātā-pitṛbhyām icchāmi saṅgamam tvat-prasāda-jam
80. Satyavan said, 'My headache has ceased, and I perceive my limbs to be in their proper, healthy state. I desire a reunion with my parents, which is born of your grace.'
न कदाचिद्विकाले हि गतपूर्वो मयाश्रमः ।
अनागतायां संध्यायां माता मे प्ररुणद्धि माम् ॥८१॥
81. na kadācidvikāle hi gatapūrvo mayāśramaḥ ,
anāgatāyāṁ saṁdhyāyāṁ mātā me praruṇaddhi mām.
81. na kadācit vikāle hi gata-pūrvaḥ mayā āśramaḥ
anāgatāyām sandhyāyām mātā me praruṇaddhi mām
81. Indeed, I have never before gone to the hermitage (āśrama) at an improper time. My mother prevents me when twilight has not yet arrived.
दिवापि मयि निष्क्रान्ते संतप्येते गुरू मम ।
विचिनोति च मां तातः सहैवाश्रमवासिभिः ॥८२॥
82. divāpi mayi niṣkrānte saṁtapyete gurū mama ,
vicinoti ca māṁ tātaḥ sahaivāśramavāsibhiḥ.
82. divā api mayi niṣkrānte saṃtapyete gurū mama
vicinoti ca mām tātaḥ saha eva āśramavāsibhiḥ
82. My parents lament even during the day when I have gone out. And my father, along with the residents of the hermitage, searches for me.
मात्रा पित्रा च सुभृशं दुःखिताभ्यामहं पुरा ।
उपालब्धः सुबहुशश्चिरेणागच्छसीति ह ॥८३॥
83. mātrā pitrā ca subhṛśaṁ duḥkhitābhyāmahaṁ purā ,
upālabdhaḥ subahuśaścireṇāgacchasīti ha.
83. mātrā pitrā ca subhṛśam duḥkhitābhyām aham purā
upālabdhaḥ subahuśaḥ cireṇa āgacchasi iti ha
83. Formerly, I was greatly reproached many times by my distressed mother and father, (who said) "You return after a long time."
का त्ववस्था तयोरद्य मदर्थमिति चिन्तये ।
तयोरदृश्ये मयि च महद्दुःखं भविष्यति ॥८४॥
84. kā tvavasthā tayoradya madarthamiti cintaye ,
tayoradṛśye mayi ca mahadduḥkhaṁ bhaviṣyati.
84. kā tu avasthā tayoḥ adya madartham iti cintaye
tayoḥ adṛśye mayi ca mahat duḥkham bhaviṣyati
84. I wonder, what is their condition today because of me? A great sorrow will certainly befall those two when I am out of their sight.
पुरा मामूचतुश्चैव रात्रावस्रायमाणकौ ।
भृशं सुदुःखितौ वृद्धौ बहुशः प्रीतिसंयुतौ ॥८५॥
85. purā māmūcatuścaiva rātrāvasrāyamāṇakau ,
bhṛśaṁ suduḥkhitau vṛddhau bahuśaḥ prītisaṁyutau.
85. purā mām ūcatuḥ ca eva rātrau asrāyamāṇakau
bhṛśam suduḥkhitau vṛddhau bahuśaḥ prītisaṃyutau
85. Formerly, my two old parents, who were greatly distressed and weeping at night, and who were also filled with affection, said to me many times...
त्वया हीनौ न जीवाव मुहूर्तमपि पुत्रक ।
यावद्धरिष्यसे पुत्र तावन्नौ जीवितं ध्रुवम् ॥८६॥
86. tvayā hīnau na jīvāva muhūrtamapi putraka ,
yāvaddhariṣyase putra tāvannau jīvitaṁ dhruvam.
86. tvayā hīnau na jīvāvaḥ muhūrtam api putraka
yāvat dhāriṣyase putra tāvat nau jīvitam dhruvam
86. O son, without you, we cannot live even for a moment. As long as you sustain us, our lives are indeed secure.
वृद्धयोरन्धयोर्यष्टिस्त्वयि वंशः प्रतिष्ठितः ।
त्वयि पिण्डश्च कीर्तिश्च संतानं चावयोरिति ॥८७॥
87. vṛddhayorandhayoryaṣṭistvayi vaṁśaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
tvayi piṇḍaśca kīrtiśca saṁtānaṁ cāvayoriti.
87. vṛddhayoḥ andhayoḥ yaṣṭiḥ tvayi vaṃśaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ
tvayi piṇḍaḥ ca kīrtiḥ ca saṃtānam ca āvayoḥ iti
87. You are the support staff for us, who are old and blind. Our lineage, the ancestral offerings (piṇḍa), our fame, and our progeny are all established in you.
माता वृद्धा पिता वृद्धस्तयोर्यष्टिरहं किल ।
तौ रात्रौ मामपश्यन्तौ कामवस्थां गमिष्यतः ॥८८॥
88. mātā vṛddhā pitā vṛddhastayoryaṣṭirahaṁ kila ,
tau rātrau māmapaśyantau kāmavasthāṁ gamiṣyataḥ.
88. mātā vṛddhā pitā vṛddhaḥ tayoḥ yaṣṭiḥ aham kila
tau rātrau mām apaśyantau kām avasthām gamiṣyataḥ
88. My mother is old, and my father is old; I am indeed their support. What condition will they both fall into at night, when they do not see me?
निद्रायाश्चाभ्यसूयामि यस्या हेतोः पिता मम ।
माता च संशयं प्राप्ता मत्कृतेऽनपकारिणी ॥८९॥
89. nidrāyāścābhyasūyāmi yasyā hetoḥ pitā mama ,
mātā ca saṁśayaṁ prāptā matkṛte'napakāriṇī.
89. nidrāyāḥ ca abhyasūyāmi yasyāḥ hetoḥ pitā mama
mātā ca saṃśayam prāptā matkṛte anapakāriṇī
89. I resent sleep, because of which my blameless father and mother have fallen into distress (saṃśaya) on my account.
अहं च संशयं प्राप्तः कृच्छ्रामापदमास्थितः ।
मातापितृभ्यां हि विना नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥९०॥
90. ahaṁ ca saṁśayaṁ prāptaḥ kṛcchrāmāpadamāsthitaḥ ,
mātāpitṛbhyāṁ hi vinā nāhaṁ jīvitumutsahe.
90. aham ca saṃśayam prāptaḥ kṛcchrām āpadam āsthitaḥ
mātāpitṛbhyām hi vinā na aham jīvitum utsahe
90. I have fallen into a dire calamity and am filled with uncertainty. Indeed, without my mother and father, I do not dare to live.
व्यक्तमाकुलया बुद्ध्या प्रज्ञाचक्षुः पिता मम ।
एकैकमस्यां वेलायां पृच्छत्याश्रमवासिनम् ॥९१॥
91. vyaktamākulayā buddhyā prajñācakṣuḥ pitā mama ,
ekaikamasyāṁ velāyāṁ pṛcchatyāśramavāsinam.
91. vyaktam ākulayā buddhyā prajñācakṣuḥ pitā mama
ekaikam asyām velāyām pṛcchati āśramavāsinam
91. My father, whose physical eyes are blind but whose vision is wisdom (prajñā), is clearly distressed in mind. At this very moment, he is questioning each resident of the hermitage.
नात्मानमनुशोचामि यथाहं पितरं शुभे ।
भर्तारं चाप्यनुगतां मातरं परिदुर्बलाम् ॥९२॥
92. nātmānamanuśocāmi yathāhaṁ pitaraṁ śubhe ,
bhartāraṁ cāpyanugatāṁ mātaraṁ paridurbalām.
92. na ātmānam anuśocāmi yathā aham pitaram śubhe
bhartāram ca api anugatām mātaram paridurbalām
92. Oh beautiful one, I do not grieve for myself (ātman) as much as I grieve for my father, and for my mother who, following her husband, has become extremely weak.
मत्कृतेन हि तावद्य संतापं परमेष्यतः ।
जीवन्तावनुजीवामि भर्तव्यौ तौ मयेति ह ।
तयोः प्रियं मे कर्तव्यमिति जीवामि चाप्यहम् ॥९३॥
93. matkṛtena hi tāvadya saṁtāpaṁ parameṣyataḥ ,
jīvantāvanujīvāmi bhartavyau tau mayeti ha ,
tayoḥ priyaṁ me kartavyamiti jīvāmi cāpyaham.
93. matkṛtena hi tāvat adya saṃtāpam
param eṣyataḥ jīvantau anujīvāmi
bhartavyau tau mayā iti ha tayoḥ priyam
me kartavyam iti jīvāmi ca api aham
93. Indeed, they will now experience great sorrow because of me. I must live to sustain them as long as they live, for 'they are to be nourished by me.' And also, 'I must do what is pleasing to them,' for this reason I continue to live.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा गुरुवर्ती गुरुप्रियः ।
उच्छ्रित्य बाहू दुःखार्तः सस्वरं प्ररुरोद ह ॥९४॥
94. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamuktvā sa dharmātmā guruvartī gurupriyaḥ ,
ucchritya bāhū duḥkhārtaḥ sasvaraṁ praruroda ha.
94. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca evam uktvā saḥ dharmātmā guruvartī
gurupriyaḥ ucchritya bāhū duḥkhārtaḥ sasvaram praruroda ha
94. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having spoken thus, that righteous soul (dharma), who was devoted and dear to his guru, raised his arms and, afflicted by grief, wept loudly.
ततोऽब्रवीत्तथा दृष्ट्वा भर्तारं शोककर्शितम् ।
प्रमृज्याश्रूणि नेत्राभ्यां सावित्री धर्मचारिणी ॥९५॥
95. tato'bravīttathā dṛṣṭvā bhartāraṁ śokakarśitam ,
pramṛjyāśrūṇi netrābhyāṁ sāvitrī dharmacāriṇī.
95. tataḥ abravīt tathā dṛṣṭvā bhartāram śokakarśitam
pramṛjya aśrūṇi netrābhyām sāvitrī dharmacāriṇī
95. Then, Savitri, who was steadfast in her natural law (dharma), seeing her husband thus emaciated by grief, wiped the tears from her eyes and spoke.
यदि मेऽस्ति तपस्तप्तं यदि दत्तं हुतं यदि ।
श्वश्रूश्वशुरभर्तॄणां मम पुण्यास्तु शर्वरी ॥९६॥
96. yadi me'sti tapastaptaṁ yadi dattaṁ hutaṁ yadi ,
śvaśrūśvaśurabhartṝṇāṁ mama puṇyāstu śarvarī.
96. yadi me asti tapaḥ taptam yadi dattam hutam yadi
śvaśrūśvaśurabhartṝṇām mama puṇyā astu śarvarī
96. If any spiritual discipline (tapas) has been performed by me, if any charity has been given, or if any offering has been made, then may this night be meritorious for my mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husband.
न स्मराम्युक्तपूर्वां वै स्वैरेष्वप्यनृतां गिरम् ।
तेन सत्येन तावद्य ध्रियेतां श्वशुरौ मम ॥९७॥
97. na smarāmyuktapūrvāṁ vai svaireṣvapyanṛtāṁ giram ,
tena satyena tāvadya dhriyetāṁ śvaśurau mama.
97. na smarāmi uktapūrvām vai svaireshu api anṛtām giram
tena satyena tāvat adya dhriyetām śvaśurau mama
97. Indeed, I do not recall ever having uttered an untrue word, even in private or in jest. By the power of that truth, may my father-in-law and mother-in-law be sustained for this day.
सत्यवानुवाच ।
कामये दर्शनं पित्रोर्याहि सावित्रि माचिरम् ।
पुरा मातुः पितुर्वापि यदि पश्यामि विप्रियम् ।
न जीविष्ये वरारोहे सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥९८॥
98. satyavānuvāca ,
kāmaye darśanaṁ pitroryāhi sāvitri māciram ,
purā mātuḥ piturvāpi yadi paśyāmi vipriyam ,
na jīviṣye varārohe satyenātmānamālabhe.
98. satyavān uvāca kāmaye darśanam pitroḥ
yāhi sāvitri mā ciram purā mātuḥ pituḥ
vā api yadi paśyāmi vipriyam na
jīviṣye varārohe satyena ātmānam ālabhe
98. Satyavan said: "I wish to see my parents. Savitri, go, do not delay! Lest I see any misfortune befalling my mother or father, I will not live, O fair-hipped one. I swear by truth and my very self (ātman)."
यदि धर्मे च ते बुद्धिर्मां चेज्जीवन्तमिच्छसि ।
मम प्रियं वा कर्तव्यं गच्छस्वाश्रममन्तिकात् ॥९९॥
99. yadi dharme ca te buddhirmāṁ cejjīvantamicchasi ,
mama priyaṁ vā kartavyaṁ gacchasvāśramamantikāt.
99. yadi dharme ca te buddhiḥ mām cet jīvantam icchasi
mama priyam vā kartavyam gaccha svāśramam antikāt
99. If your intellect (buddhi) is inclined towards righteousness (dharma), and if you wish me to live, or if my wish (priyam) is to be fulfilled, then go back to the hermitage from here.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
सावित्री तत उत्थाय केशान्संयम्य भामिनी ।
पतिमुत्थापयामास बाहुभ्यां परिगृह्य वै ॥१००॥
100. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
sāvitrī tata utthāya keśānsaṁyamya bhāminī ,
patimutthāpayāmāsa bāhubhyāṁ parigṛhya vai.

bhāminī patim utthāpayāmāsa bāhubhyām parigṛhya vai
100. Markandeya said: Then Savitri, that radiant lady, rising and tying up her hair, helped her husband up, holding him with both her arms.
उत्थाय सत्यवांश्चापि प्रमृज्याङ्गानि पाणिना ।
दिशः सर्वाः समालोक्य कठिने दृष्टिमादधे ॥१०१॥
101. utthāya satyavāṁścāpi pramṛjyāṅgāni pāṇinā ,
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samālokya kaṭhine dṛṣṭimādadhe.
101. utthāya satyavān ca api pramṛjya aṅgāni pāṇinā
diśaḥ sarvāḥ samālokya kaṭhine dṛṣṭim ādadhe
101. Satyavan too, having risen and wiped his limbs with his hand, looked around in all directions, and then fixed his gaze (dṛṣṭi) upon something hard.
तमुवाचाथ सावित्री श्वः फलानीह नेष्यसि ।
योगक्षेमार्थमेतत्ते नेष्यामि परशुं त्वहम् ॥१०२॥
102. tamuvācātha sāvitrī śvaḥ phalānīha neṣyasi ,
yogakṣemārthametatte neṣyāmi paraśuṁ tvaham.
102. tam uvāca atha sāvitrī śvaḥ phalāni iha neṣyasi
yogakṣemārtham etat te neṣyāmi paraśum tu aham
102. Then Sāvitrī said to him, "Tomorrow, you will gather fruits from here. But I will carry this axe for your well-being (yogakṣema)."
कृत्वा कठिनभारं सा वृक्षशाखावलम्बिनम् ।
गृहीत्वा परशुं भर्तुः सकाशं पुनरागमत् ॥१०३॥
103. kṛtvā kaṭhinabhāraṁ sā vṛkṣaśākhāvalambinam ,
gṛhītvā paraśuṁ bhartuḥ sakāśaṁ punarāgamat.
103. kṛtvā kaṭhinabhāram sā vṛkṣaśākhāvalambinam
gṛhītvā paraśum bhartuḥ sakāśam punaḥ āgamat
103. After making a heavy load (of fruits) hanging from a tree branch, and taking the axe, she returned to her husband.
वामे स्कन्धे तु वामोरूर्भर्तुर्बाहुं निवेश्य सा ।
दक्षिणेन परिष्वज्य जगाम मृदुगामिनी ॥१०४॥
104. vāme skandhe tu vāmorūrbharturbāhuṁ niveśya sā ,
dakṣiṇena pariṣvajya jagāma mṛdugāminī.
104. vāme skandhe tu vāmorūḥ bhartuḥ bāhum niveśya
sā dakṣiṇena pariṣvajya jagāma mṛdugāminī
104. But the beautiful-thighed Sāvitrī, placing her husband's arm on her left shoulder and embracing him with her right (arm), walked with soft steps.
सत्यवानुवाच ।
अभ्यासगमनाद्भीरु पन्थानो विदिता मम ।
वृक्षान्तरालोकितया ज्योत्स्नया चापि लक्षये ॥१०५॥
105. satyavānuvāca ,
abhyāsagamanādbhīru panthāno viditā mama ,
vṛkṣāntarālokitayā jyotsnayā cāpi lakṣaye.
105. satyavān uvāca abhyāsagamanāt bhīru panthānaḥ viditā
mama vṛkṣāntarālokitayā jyotsnayā ca api lakṣaye
105. Satyavān said, "O timid one, the paths are well-known to me from my frequent journeys. Moreover, I can discern (the way) by the moonlight visible between the trees."
आगतौ स्वः पथा येन फलान्यवचितानि च ।
यथागतं शुभे गच्छ पन्थानं मा विचारय ॥१०६॥
106. āgatau svaḥ pathā yena phalānyavacitāni ca ,
yathāgataṁ śubhe gaccha panthānaṁ mā vicāraya.
106. āgatau svaḥ pathā yena phalāni avacitāni ca
yathāgatam śubhe gaccha panthānam mā vicāraya
106. Go, my dear, by the same path we both arrived on and by which the fruits were gathered; do not worry about the way.
पलाशषण्डे चैतस्मिन्पन्था व्यावर्तते द्विधा ।
तस्योत्तरेण यः पन्थास्तेन गच्छ त्वरस्व च ।
स्वस्थोऽस्मि बलवानस्मि दिदृक्षुः पितरावुभौ ॥१०७॥
107. palāśaṣaṇḍe caitasminpanthā vyāvartate dvidhā ,
tasyottareṇa yaḥ panthāstena gaccha tvarasva ca ,
svastho'smi balavānasmi didṛkṣuḥ pitarāvubhau.
107. palāṣaṣaṇḍe ca etasmin panthāḥ vyāvartate
dvidhā tasya uttareṇa yaḥ panthāḥ
tena gaccha tvarasva ca svasthaḥ asmi
balavān asmi didṛkṣuḥ pitarau ubhau
107. And in this thicket of Palasha trees, the path divides into two. Go by the path that is to its north, and hurry. I am healthy, I am strong, and eager to see both my parents.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ब्रुवन्नेवं त्वरायुक्तः स प्रायादाश्रमं प्रति ॥१०८॥
108. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
bruvannevaṁ tvarāyuktaḥ sa prāyādāśramaṁ prati.
108. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca bruvan evam
tvarāyuktaḥ saḥ prāyāt āśramam prati
108. Markandeya said: Speaking thus, and filled with haste, he went towards the hermitage (āśrama).
