नारद उवाच ।
प्रत्यभिज्ञातमात्रोऽथ सद्भिस्तैर्नरपुंगवः ।
ययातिर्दिव्यसंस्थानो बभूव विगतज्वरः ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
pratyabhijñātamātro'tha sadbhistairnarapuṁgavaḥ ,
yayātirdivyasaṁsthāno babhūva vigatajvaraḥ.

nara_puṅgavaḥ yayātiḥ divya_saṃsthānaḥ babhūva vigata_jvaraḥ
1. Nārada said: Then, as soon as he was recognized by those virtuous people, Yajāti, that best among men, assumed a divine form and became free from anguish.
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरो दिव्याभरणभूषितः ।
दिव्यगन्धगुणोपेतो न पृथ्वीमस्पृशत्पदा ॥२॥
2. divyamālyāmbaradharo divyābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ ,
divyagandhaguṇopeto na pṛthvīmaspṛśatpadā.
2. divya_mālya_ambara_dharaḥ divya_ābharaṇa_bhūṣitaḥ
divya_gandha_guṇa_upetaḥ na pṛthvīm aspṛśat padā
2. Wearing divine garlands and garments, adorned with divine ornaments, and endowed with divine fragrances and qualities, he did not touch the earth with his feet.
ततो वसुमनाः पूर्वमुच्चैरुच्चारयन्वचः ।
ख्यातो दानपतिर्लोके व्याजहार नृपं तदा ॥३॥
3. tato vasumanāḥ pūrvamuccairuccārayanvacaḥ ,
khyāto dānapatirloke vyājahāra nṛpaṁ tadā.
3. tataḥ vasumanāḥ pūrvam uccaiḥ uccārayan vacaḥ
khyātaḥ dānapatiḥ loke vyājahāra nṛpam tadā
3. Then, Vasumanas, who was renowned in the world as a generous donor (dānapati) and who first loudly uttered some words, spoke to the king at that moment.
प्राप्तवानस्मि यल्लोके सर्ववर्णेष्वगर्हया ।
तदप्यथ च दास्यामि तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥४॥
4. prāptavānasmi yalloke sarvavarṇeṣvagarhayā ,
tadapyatha ca dāsyāmi tena saṁyujyatāṁ bhavān.
4. prāptavān asmi yat loke sarva_varṇeṣu agarhayā
tat api atha ca dāsyāmi tena saṃyujyatām bhavān
4. Whatever I have acquired in the world, blamelessly from all classes of people - that too I will give. May Your Majesty be endowed with that.
यत्फलं दानशीलस्य क्षमाशीलस्य यत्फलम् ।
यच्च मे फलमाधाने तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥५॥
5. yatphalaṁ dānaśīlasya kṣamāśīlasya yatphalam ,
yacca me phalamādhāne tena saṁyujyatāṁ bhavān.
5. yat phalam dānaśīlasya kṣamāśīlasya yat phalam
yat ca me phalam ādhāne tena saṃyujyatām bhavān
5. May you be endowed with that fruit which belongs to one who is charitable, that fruit which belongs to one who is forgiving, and also that fruit which I obtain from ritual offerings.
ततः प्रतर्दनोऽप्याह वाक्यं क्षत्रियपुंगवः ।
यथा धर्मरतिर्नित्यं नित्यं युद्धपरायणः ॥६॥
6. tataḥ pratardano'pyāha vākyaṁ kṣatriyapuṁgavaḥ ,
yathā dharmaratirnityaṁ nityaṁ yuddhaparāyaṇaḥ.
6. tataḥ pratardanaḥ api āha vākyam kṣatriyapuṅgavaḥ
yathā dharmaratiḥ nityam nityam yuddhaparaāyaṇaḥ
6. Then Pratardana, the foremost among kṣatriyas, also spoke these words: "Just as I am always devoted to natural law (dharma) and always dedicated to battle..."
प्राप्तवानस्मि यल्लोके क्षत्रधर्मोद्भवं यशः ।
वीरशब्दफलं चैव तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥७॥
7. prāptavānasmi yalloke kṣatradharmodbhavaṁ yaśaḥ ,
vīraśabdaphalaṁ caiva tena saṁyujyatāṁ bhavān.
7. prāptavān asmi yat loke kṣatradharmodbhavam yaśaḥ
vīraśabdaphalam ca eva tena saṃyujyatām bhavān
7. ...just as I have attained fame (yaśas) in the world, born of the kṣatriya's natural law (dharma), and also the fruit of being called a hero - may you be endowed with that.
शिबिरौशीनरो धीमानुवाच मधुरां गिरम् ।
यथा बालेषु नारीषु वैहार्येषु तथैव च ॥८॥
8. śibirauśīnaro dhīmānuvāca madhurāṁ giram ,
yathā bāleṣu nārīṣu vaihāryeṣu tathaiva ca.
8. śibiḥ auśīnaraḥ dhīmān uvāca madhurām giram
yathā bāleṣu nārīṣu vaihāryeṣu tathā eva ca
8. Then the wise Śibi, son of Uśīnara, spoke sweet words: "Just as among children, among women, and similarly among those engaged in sport..."
संगरेषु निपातेषु तथापद्व्यसनेषु च ।
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥९॥
9. saṁgareṣu nipāteṣu tathāpadvyasaneṣu ca ,
anṛtaṁ noktapūrvaṁ me tena satyena khaṁ vraja.
9. saṅgareṣu nipāteṣu tathā āpadvyasaneṣu ca
anṛtam na uktapūrvam me tena satyena kham vraja
9. May you go to heaven by the power of that truth (satya), for I have never uttered a falsehood in battles, or in times of distress and calamity.
यथा प्राणांश्च राज्यं च राजन्कर्म सुखानि च ।
त्यजेयं न पुनः सत्यं तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥१०॥
10. yathā prāṇāṁśca rājyaṁ ca rājankarma sukhāni ca ,
tyajeyaṁ na punaḥ satyaṁ tena satyena khaṁ vraja.
10. yathā prāṇān ca rājyam ca rājan karma sukhāni ca
tyajeyam na punaḥ satyam tena satyena kham vraja
10. O King, just as I would forsake my life, kingdom, deeds (karma), and pleasures, but I would never abandon truth (satya) – by the power of that truth, may you go to heaven.
यथा सत्येन मे धर्मो यथा सत्येन पावकः ।
प्रीतः शक्रश्च सत्येन तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥११॥
11. yathā satyena me dharmo yathā satyena pāvakaḥ ,
prītaḥ śakraśca satyena tena satyena khaṁ vraja.
11. yathā satyena me dharmaḥ yathā satyena pāvakaḥ
prītaḥ śakraḥ ca satyena tena satyena kham vraja
11. Just as my righteousness (dharma) is maintained by truth (satya), and just as fire (pāvaka) is pleased by truth (satya), and Indra (śakra) is also pleased by truth (satya) – by the power of that truth, may you go to heaven.
अष्टकस्त्वथ राजर्षिः कौशिको माधवीसुतः ।
अनेकशतयज्वानं वचनं प्राह धर्मवित् ॥१२॥
12. aṣṭakastvatha rājarṣiḥ kauśiko mādhavīsutaḥ ,
anekaśatayajvānaṁ vacanaṁ prāha dharmavit.
12. aṣṭakaḥ tu atha rājarṣiḥ kauśikaḥ mādhvīsutaḥ
anekaśatayajvānam vacanam prāha dharmavit
12. atha tu rājarṣiḥ kauśikaḥ mādhvīsutaḥ dharmavit
aṣṭakaḥ anekaśatayajvānam vacanam prāha
12. But then the royal sage Aṣṭaka, Kauśika, the son of Mādhvī, and a knower of natural law (dharma), spoke a statement to Yayāti, who had performed hundreds of Vedic rituals (yajña).
शतशः पुण्डरीका मे गोसवाश्च चिताः प्रभो ।
क्रतवो वाजपेयाश्च तेषां फलमवाप्नुहि ॥१३॥
13. śataśaḥ puṇḍarīkā me gosavāśca citāḥ prabho ,
kratavo vājapeyāśca teṣāṁ phalamavāpnuhi.
13. śataśaḥ puṇḍarīkāḥ me gosavāḥ ca citāḥ prabho
kratavaḥ vājapeyāḥ ca teṣām phalam avāpnuhi
13. prabho me śataśaḥ puṇḍarīkāḥ gosavāḥ ca citāḥ
kratavaḥ vājapeyāḥ ca teṣām phalam avāpnuhi
13. O Lord, hundreds of Puṇḍarīka Vedic rituals (yajñas) and Gosava Vedic rituals (yajñas) have been performed by me, as have Vājapeya Vedic rituals (yajñas). May you obtain the fruit of these.
न मे रत्नानि न धनं न तथान्ये परिच्छदाः ।
क्रतुष्वनुपयुक्तानि तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥१४॥
14. na me ratnāni na dhanaṁ na tathānye paricchadāḥ ,
kratuṣvanupayuktāni tena satyena khaṁ vraja.
14. na me ratnāni na dhanam na tathā anye paricchadāḥ
kratuṣu anupayuktāni tena satyena kham vraja
14. me ratnāni na dhanam na tathā anye paricchadāḥ
kratuṣu anupayuktāni na tena satyena kham vraja
14. Neither my jewels nor my wealth, nor indeed any other possessions, remained unutilized in the Vedic rituals (yajñas). By that truth, may you ascend to heaven.
यथा यथा हि जल्पन्ति दौहित्रास्तं नराधिपम् ।
तथा तथा वसुमतीं त्यक्त्वा राजा दिवं ययौ ॥१५॥
15. yathā yathā hi jalpanti dauhitrāstaṁ narādhipam ,
tathā tathā vasumatīṁ tyaktvā rājā divaṁ yayau.
15. yathā yathā hi jalpanti dauhitrāḥ tam narādhipam
| tathā tathā vasumatīm tyaktvā rājā divam yayau
15. Indeed, as the grandsons spoke to that king (narādhipa), so the king, having abandoned the earth, ascended to heaven.
एवं सर्वे समस्तास्ते राजानः सुकृतैस्तदा ।
ययातिं स्वर्गतो भ्रष्टं तारयामासुरञ्जसा ॥१६॥
16. evaṁ sarve samastāste rājānaḥ sukṛtaistadā ,
yayātiṁ svargato bhraṣṭaṁ tārayāmāsurañjasā.
16. evam sarve samastāḥ te rājānaḥ sukṛtaiḥ tadā |
yayātim svargataḥ bhraṣṭam tārayāmāsuḥ añjasā
16. Thus, all those assembled kings, through their meritorious deeds, then swiftly rescued Yayati, who had fallen from heaven.
दौहित्राः स्वेन धर्मेण यज्ञदानकृतेन वै ।
चतुर्षु राजवंशेषु संभूताः कुलवर्धनाः ।
मातामहं महाप्राज्ञं दिवमारोपयन्ति ते ॥१७॥
17. dauhitrāḥ svena dharmeṇa yajñadānakṛtena vai ,
caturṣu rājavaṁśeṣu saṁbhūtāḥ kulavardhanāḥ ,
mātāmahaṁ mahāprājñaṁ divamāropayanti te.
17. dauhitrāḥ svena dharmeṇa
yajñadānakṛtena vai caturṣu rājavaṃśeṣu
saṃbhūtāḥ kulavardhanāḥ mātāmahaṃ
mahāprājñaṃ divaṃ āropayanti te
17. Indeed, those grandsons who enhance their families and were born into four royal lineages cause their very wise maternal grandfather to ascend to heaven through their own intrinsic nature (dharma), which manifests in performing Vedic rituals (yajña) and giving charity (dāna).
राजान ऊचुः ।
राजधर्मगुणोपेताः सर्वधर्मगुणान्विताः ।
दौहित्रास्ते वयं राजन्दिवमारोह पार्थिवः ॥१८॥
18. rājāna ūcuḥ ,
rājadharmaguṇopetāḥ sarvadharmaguṇānvitāḥ ,
dauhitrāste vayaṁ rājandivamāroha pārthivaḥ.
18. rājānaḥ ūcuḥ rājadharmaguṇopetāḥ sarvadharmaguṇānvitāḥ
dauhitrāḥ te vayaṃ rājan divam āroha pārthivaḥ
18. The kings said: 'O King (rājan), we are your grandsons, endowed with the qualities of royal duty (dharma) and adorned with the virtues of all (righteous) conduct (dharma). O Ruler (pārthiva), ascend to heaven!'
