दृष्ट्वा मम हतान्पुत्रान्बहूनेकेन संजय ।
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपश्चैव किमकुर्वत संयुगे ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
dṛṣṭvā mama hatānputrānbahūnekena saṁjaya ,
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpaścaiva kimakurvata saṁyuge.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Having seen my many sons slain by one (person), Sañjaya, what then did Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa do in the battle?"
अहन्यहनि मे पुत्राः क्षयं गच्छन्ति संजय ।
मन्येऽहं सर्वथा सूत दैवेनोपहता भृशम् ॥२॥
2. ahanyahani me putrāḥ kṣayaṁ gacchanti saṁjaya ,
manye'haṁ sarvathā sūta daivenopahatā bhṛśam.
2. ahani ahani me putrāḥ kṣayam gacchanti saṃjaya
manye aham sarvathā sūta daivena upahatā bhṛśam

2. Day after day, Sañjaya, my sons are dwindling. I believe, O Sūta, that they are utterly struck down by fate (daiva).
यत्र मे तनयाः सर्वे जीयन्ते न जयन्त्युत ।
यत्र भीष्मस्य द्रोणस्य कृपस्य च महात्मनः ॥३॥
3. yatra me tanayāḥ sarve jīyante na jayantyuta ,
yatra bhīṣmasya droṇasya kṛpasya ca mahātmanaḥ.

yatra bhīṣmasya droṇasya kṛpasya ca mahātmanaḥ

3. Where all my sons are being defeated and not winning, even where the great-souled Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa [are present]...
सौमदत्तेश्च वीरस्य भगदत्तस्य चोभयोः ।
अश्वत्थाम्नस्तथा तात शूराणां सुमहात्मनाम् ॥४॥
4. saumadatteśca vīrasya bhagadattasya cobhayoḥ ,
aśvatthāmnastathā tāta śūrāṇāṁ sumahātmanām.
4. saumadatteḥ ca vīrasya bhagadattasya ca ubhayoḥ
| aśvatthāmnaḥ tathā tāta śūrāṇām sumahātmanām
4. ca vīrasya saumadatteḥ ca bhagadattasya ubhayoḥ

4. And of the hero Saumadatti, and of Bhagadatta - of both of them; and similarly, my dear (tāta), of Ashvatthama, and of other supremely great-souled heroes.
अन्येषां चैव वीराणां मध्यगास्तनया मम ।
यदहन्यन्त संग्रामे किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥५॥
5. anyeṣāṁ caiva vīrāṇāṁ madhyagāstanayā mama ,
yadahanyanta saṁgrāme kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.
5. anyeṣām ca eva vīrāṇām madhyagāḥ tanayāḥ mama |
yat ahanyanta saṃgrāme kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
5. ca eva anyeṣām vīrāṇām madhyagāḥ mama tanayāḥ
yat saṃgrāme ahanyanta kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ
5. And my sons were amidst these other heroes. That they were killed in battle - what else could it be but due to their destiny (bhāgadheya)?
न हि दुर्योधनो मन्दः पुरा प्रोक्तमबुध्यत ।
वार्यमाणो मया तात भीष्मेण विदुरेण च ॥६॥
6. na hi duryodhano mandaḥ purā proktamabudhyata ,
vāryamāṇo mayā tāta bhīṣmeṇa vidureṇa ca.
6. na hi duryodhanaḥ mandaḥ purā proktam abudhyata
| vāryamāṇaḥ mayā tāta bhīṣmeṇa vidureṇa ca
6. hi tāta mandaḥ duryodhanaḥ purā proktam na
abudhyata mayā bhīṣmeṇa vidureṇa ca vāryamāṇaḥ
6. Indeed, my dear (tāta), the foolish Duryodhana did not understand what was said to him previously, even though he was being restrained by me, by Bhishma, and by Vidura.
गान्धार्या चैव दुर्मेधाः सततं हितकाम्यया ।
नावबुध्यत्पुरा मोहात्तस्य प्राप्तमिदं फलम् ॥७॥
7. gāndhāryā caiva durmedhāḥ satataṁ hitakāmyayā ,
nāvabudhyatpurā mohāttasya prāptamidaṁ phalam.
7. gāndhāryā ca eva durmedhāḥ satataṃ hitakāmyayā na
avabudhyat purā mohāt tasya prāptam idam phalam
7. durmedhāḥ mohāt purā gāndhāryā hitakāmyayā satataṃ na avabudhyat,
tasya idam prāptam phalam eva ca
7. Even though Gaṃdhārī constantly desired his welfare, that ill-minded one (Duryodhana), due to delusion, did not formerly understand that this result would accrue to him.
यद्भीमसेनः समरे पुत्रान्मम विचेतसः ।
अहन्यहनि संक्रुद्धो नयते यमसादनम् ॥८॥
8. yadbhīmasenaḥ samare putrānmama vicetasaḥ ,
ahanyahani saṁkruddho nayate yamasādanam.
8. yat bhīmasenaḥ samare putrān mama vicetasaḥ
ahanyahani saṃkruddhaḥ nayate yamasādanam
8. yat saṃkruddhaḥ bhīmasenaḥ ahanyahani samare
mama vicetasaḥ putrān yamasādanam nayate
8. That is, how Bhimasena, furious, day by day leads my senseless sons to the abode of Yama (death) in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
इदं तत्समनुप्राप्तं क्षत्तुर्वचनमुत्तमम् ।
न बुद्धवानसि विभो प्रोच्यमानं हितं तदा ॥९॥
9. saṁjaya uvāca ,
idaṁ tatsamanuprāptaṁ kṣatturvacanamuttamam ,
na buddhavānasi vibho procyamānaṁ hitaṁ tadā.
9. saṃjaya uvāca idam tat samanuprāptam kṣattuḥ vacanam
uttamam na buddhavān asi vibho procyamānam hitam tadā
9. saṃjaya uvāca vibho tadā procyamānam hitam kṣattuḥ uttamam
vacanam tvam na buddhavān asi; idam tat samanuprāptam
9. Saṃjaya said: "O lord, that excellent counsel of Vidura (kṣattṛ), which was declared to be beneficial then, has now come to pass. You did not understand it."
निवारय सुतान्द्यूतात्पाण्डवान्मा द्रुहेति च ।
सुहृदां हितकामानां ब्रुवतां तत्तदेव च ॥१०॥
10. nivāraya sutāndyūtātpāṇḍavānmā druheti ca ,
suhṛdāṁ hitakāmānāṁ bruvatāṁ tattadeva ca.
10. nivāraya sutān dyūtāt pāṇḍavān mā druha iti ca
suhṛdām hitakāmānām bruvatām tat tat eva ca
10. (kṣattuḥ vacanam āsīt): "sutān dyūtāt nivāraya,
pāṇḍavān ca mā druha" iti; suhṛdām hitakāmānām bruvatām tat tat eva ca (vacanam āsīt)
10. "(He said): 'Restrain your sons from gambling and do not harm the Pandavas.'" These very words were also spoken by well-wishing friends, repeatedly.
न शुश्रूषसि यद्वाक्यं मर्त्यः पथ्यमिवौषधम् ।
तदेव त्वामनुप्राप्तं वचनं साधु भाषितम् ॥११॥
11. na śuśrūṣasi yadvākyaṁ martyaḥ pathyamivauṣadham ,
tadeva tvāmanuprāptaṁ vacanaṁ sādhu bhāṣitam.
11. na śuśrūṣasi yat vākyam martyaḥ pathyam iva auṣadham
tat eva tvām anuprāptam vacanam sādhu bhāṣitam
11. martyaḥ yat vākyam pathyam auṣadham iva na śuśrūṣasi,
tat eva sādhu bhāṣitam vacanam tvām anuprāptam
11. That wise counsel, which you, a mortal, did not heed (just as one might disregard beneficial medicine), has now indeed come upon you.
विदुरद्रोणभीष्माणां तथान्येषां हितैषिणाम् ।
अकृत्वा वचनं पथ्यं क्षयं गच्छन्ति कौरवाः ॥१२॥
12. viduradroṇabhīṣmāṇāṁ tathānyeṣāṁ hitaiṣiṇām ,
akṛtvā vacanaṁ pathyaṁ kṣayaṁ gacchanti kauravāḥ.
12. vidura-droṇa-bhīṣmāṇām tathā anyeṣām hitaiṣiṇām
akṛtvā vacanam pathyam kṣayam gacchanti kauravāḥ
12. kauravāḥ vidura-droṇa-bhīṣmāṇām tathā anyeṣām
hitaiṣiṇām pathyam vacanam akṛtvā kṣayam gacchanti
12. The Kauravas are heading for ruin, having disregarded the beneficial counsel of Vidura, Drona, Bhishma, and other well-wishers.
तदेतत्समतिक्रान्तं पूर्वमेव विशां पते ।
तस्मान्मे शृणु तत्त्वेन यथा युद्धमवर्तत ॥१३॥
13. tadetatsamatikrāntaṁ pūrvameva viśāṁ pate ,
tasmānme śṛṇu tattvena yathā yuddhamavartata.
13. tat etat samatikrāntam pūrvam eva viśām pate
tasmāt me śṛṇu tattvena yathā yuddham avartata
13. viśām pate,
tat etat pūrvam eva samatikrāntam.
tasmāt,
me tattvena yathā yuddham avartata śṛṇu
13. O lord of the people, all this has already transpired. Therefore, listen from me, in truth, how the war (yuddha) unfolded.
मध्याह्ने सुमहारौद्रः संग्रामः समपद्यत ।
लोकक्षयकरो राजंस्तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१४॥
14. madhyāhne sumahāraudraḥ saṁgrāmaḥ samapadyata ,
lokakṣayakaro rājaṁstanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu.
14. madhyāhne sumahā-raudraḥ saṅgrāmaḥ samapadyata
loka-kṣaya-karaḥ rājan tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
14. rājan,
madhyāhne su-mahā-raudraḥ loka-kṣaya-karaḥ saṅgrāmaḥ samapadyata.
tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
14. At midday, O King, a very dreadful battle (saṃgrāma) ensued, one that caused the destruction of the world (loka). Listen to me as I narrate that.
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि धर्मपुत्रस्य शासनात् ।
संरब्धान्यभ्यधावन्त भीष्ममेव जिघांसया ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sarvāṇi sainyāni dharmaputrasya śāsanāt ,
saṁrabdhānyabhyadhāvanta bhīṣmameva jighāṁsayā.
15. tataḥ sarvāṇi sainyāni dharmaputrasya śāsanāt
saṃrabdhāni abhyadhāvanta bhīṣmam eva jighāṃsayā
15. tataḥ dharmaputrasya śāsanāt sarvāṇi saṃrabdhāni
sainyāni bhīṣmam eva jighāṃsayā abhyadhāvanta
15. Then all the armies, following the command of the son of Dharma (dharma), furiously charged towards Bhishma with the intention of killing him.
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च सात्यकिश्च महारथः ।
युक्तानीका महाराज भीष्ममेव समभ्ययुः ॥१६॥
16. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca sātyakiśca mahārathaḥ ,
yuktānīkā mahārāja bhīṣmameva samabhyayuḥ.
16. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca sātyakiḥ ca mahārathaḥ
yuktānīkā mahārāja bhīṣmam eva samabhyayuḥ
16. mahārāja dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca mahārathaḥ
sātyakiḥ ca yuktānīkā bhīṣmam eva samabhyayuḥ
16. O great king, Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandi, and the great charioteer Satyaki, with their armies arrayed, advanced towards Bhishma.
अर्जुनो द्रौपदेयाश्च चेकितानश्च संयुगे ।
दुर्योधनसमादिष्टान्राज्ञः सर्वान्समभ्ययुः ॥१७॥
17. arjuno draupadeyāśca cekitānaśca saṁyuge ,
duryodhanasamādiṣṭānrājñaḥ sarvānsamabhyayuḥ.
17. arjunaḥ draupadeyāḥ ca cekitānaḥ ca saṃyuge
duryodhanasamādiṣṭān rājñaḥ sarvān samabhyayuḥ
17. saṃyuge arjunaḥ draupadeyāḥ ca cekitānaḥ ca
duryodhanasamādiṣṭān sarvān rājñaḥ samabhyayuḥ
17. Arjuna, the sons of Draupadi, and Chekitana, engaged in battle, all advanced towards the kings who had been appointed by Duryodhana.
अभिमन्युस्तथा वीरो हैडिम्बश्च महारथः ।
भीमसेनश्च संक्रुद्धस्तेऽभ्यधावन्त कौरवान् ॥१८॥
18. abhimanyustathā vīro haiḍimbaśca mahārathaḥ ,
bhīmasenaśca saṁkruddhaste'bhyadhāvanta kauravān.
18. abhimanyuḥ tathā vīraḥ haiḍimbaḥ ca mahārathaḥ
bhīmasenaḥ ca saṃkruddhaḥ te abhyadhāvanta kauravān
18. tathā vīraḥ abhimanyuḥ ca mahārathaḥ haiḍimbaḥ ca
saṃkruddhaḥ bhīmasenaḥ te kauravān abhyadhāvanta
18. Similarly, the heroic Abhimanyu, and the great charioteer Haiḍimba (Ghatotkacha), and Bhimasena, who was greatly enraged, all rushed against the Kauravas.
त्रिधाभूतैरवध्यन्त पाण्डवैः कौरवा युधि ।
तथैव कौरवे राजन्नवध्यन्त परे रणे ॥१९॥
19. tridhābhūtairavadhyanta pāṇḍavaiḥ kauravā yudhi ,
tathaiva kaurave rājannavadhyanta pare raṇe.
19. tridhābhūtaiḥ avadhyanta pāṇḍavaiḥ kauravāḥ yudhi
tathā eva kaurave rājan avadhyanta pare raṇe
19. rājan yudhi tridhābhūtaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ kauravāḥ
avadhyanta tathā eva raṇe kaurave pare avadhyanta
19. The Kauravas were slain in battle by the Pandavas, who had become formidable (tridhābhūta). Similarly, O King, the enemies were slain in battle within the Kaurava ranks.
द्रोणस्तु रथिनां श्रेष्ठः सोमकान्सृञ्जयैः सह ।
अभ्यद्रवत संक्रुद्धः प्रेषयिष्यन्यमक्षयम् ॥२०॥
20. droṇastu rathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ somakānsṛñjayaiḥ saha ,
abhyadravata saṁkruddhaḥ preṣayiṣyanyamakṣayam.
20. droṇaḥ tu rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ somakān sṛñjayaiḥ saha
abhyadravata saṃkruddhaḥ preṣayisyān yamākṣayam
20. tu rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ saṃkruddhaḥ droṇaḥ sṛñjayaiḥ
saha somakān yamākṣayam preṣayisyān abhyadravata
20. But Drona, the foremost among charioteers, enraged, rushed towards the Somakas along with the Srinjayas, intending to send them to Yama's eternal abode.
तत्राक्रन्दो महानासीत्सृञ्जयानां महात्मनाम् ।
वध्यतां समरे राजन्भारद्वाजेन धन्विना ॥२१॥
21. tatrākrando mahānāsītsṛñjayānāṁ mahātmanām ,
vadhyatāṁ samare rājanbhāradvājena dhanvinā.
21. tatra ākrandāḥ mahān āsīt sṛñjayānām mahātmanām
vadhyatām samare rājan bhāradvājena dhanvinā
21. rājan tatra samare bhāradvājena dhanvinā vadhyatām
mahātmanām sṛñjayānām mahān ākrandāḥ āsīt
21. There, O King, a great cry of distress (ākrandana) arose from the great-souled Srinjayas, who were being slain in battle by the archer Drona (Bhāradvāja).
द्रोणेन निहतास्तत्र क्षत्रिया बहवो रणे ।
विवेष्टन्तः स्म दृश्यन्ते व्याधिक्लिष्टा नरा इव ॥२२॥
22. droṇena nihatāstatra kṣatriyā bahavo raṇe ,
viveṣṭantaḥ sma dṛśyante vyādhikliṣṭā narā iva.
22. droṇena nihitāḥ tatra kṣatriyāḥ bahavaḥ raṇe
vīveṣṭantaḥ sma dṛśyante vyādhikliṣṭāḥ narāḥ iva
22. tatra raṇe droṇena nihitāḥ bahavaḥ kṣatriyāḥ
vyādhikliṣṭāḥ narāḥ iva vīveṣṭantaḥ sma dṛśyante
22. There, many Kshatriyas, slain by Drona in battle, were seen writhing, like people afflicted by disease.
कूजतां क्रन्दतां चैव स्तनतां चैव संयुगे ।
अनिशं श्रूयते शब्दः क्षुत्कृशानां नृणामिव ॥२३॥
23. kūjatāṁ krandatāṁ caiva stanatāṁ caiva saṁyuge ,
aniśaṁ śrūyate śabdaḥ kṣutkṛśānāṁ nṛṇāmiva.
23. kūjatām krandatām ca eva stanatām ca eva saṃyuge
aniśam śrūyate śabdaḥ kṣutkṛśānām nṛṇām iva
23. saṃyuge kūjatām krandatām stanatām ca eva
kṣutkṛśānām nṛṇām iva aniśam śabdaḥ śrūyate
23. In the battle, the sounds of shrieking, wailing, and roaring were constantly heard, like those of emaciated people tormented by hunger.
तथैव कौरवेयाणां भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
चकार कदनं घोरं क्रुद्धः काल इवापरः ॥२४॥
24. tathaiva kauraveyāṇāṁ bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
cakāra kadanaṁ ghoraṁ kruddhaḥ kāla ivāparaḥ.
24. tathā eva kauraveyāṇām bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
cakāra kadanam ghoram kruddhaḥ kālaḥ iva aparaḥ
24. tathā eva mahābalaḥ bhīmasenaḥ kruddhaḥ aparaḥ
kālaḥ iva kauraveyāṇām ghoram kadanam cakāra
24. In the same way, Bhīmasena, mighty in strength, enraged like another god of death (kāla), inflicted a terrible slaughter upon the Kauravas.
वध्यतां तत्र सैन्यानामन्योन्येन महारणे ।
प्रावर्तत नदी घोरा रुधिरौघप्रवाहिनी ॥२५॥
25. vadhyatāṁ tatra sainyānāmanyonyena mahāraṇe ,
prāvartata nadī ghorā rudhiraughapravāhinī.
25. vadhyatām tatra sainyānām anyonyena mahāraṇe
prāvartata nadī ghorā rudhiraughapravāhinī
25. tatra mahāraṇe anyonyena sainyānām vadhyatām
ghorā rudhiraughapravāhinī nadī prāvartata
25. There, in that great battle, as the armies were being mutually slaughtered, a dreadful river, streaming with torrents of blood, began to flow.
स संग्रामो महाराज घोररूपोऽभवन्महान् ।
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनः ॥२६॥
26. sa saṁgrāmo mahārāja ghorarūpo'bhavanmahān ,
kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca yamarāṣṭravivardhanaḥ.
26. saḥ saṃgrāmaḥ mahārāja ghorarūpaḥ abhavat mahān
kurūṇām pāṇḍavānām ca yamarāṣṭravivardhanaḥ
26. mahārāja,
saḥ mahān saṃgrāmaḥ ghorarūpaḥ abhavat,
[yaḥ] kurūṇām pāṇḍavānām ca yamarāṣṭravivardhanaḥ [āsa]
26. That great battle, O King, became terrifying in appearance and was a great extender of the realm of Yama (yamarāṣṭra) for both the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas.
ततो भीमो रणे क्रुद्धो रभसश्च विशेषतः ।
गजानीकं समासाद्य प्रेषयामास मृत्यवे ॥२७॥
27. tato bhīmo raṇe kruddho rabhasaśca viśeṣataḥ ,
gajānīkaṁ samāsādya preṣayāmāsa mṛtyave.
27. tataḥ bhīmaḥ raṇe kruddhaḥ rabhasaḥ ca viśeṣataḥ
gajānīkam samāsādya preṣayām āsa mṛtyave
27. tataḥ raṇe kruddhaḥ viśeṣataḥ ca rabhasaḥ
bhīmaḥ gajānīkam samāsādya mṛtyave preṣayām āsa
27. Then, Bhima, enraged and especially impetuous in battle, attacked the elephant army and sent them to their death.
तत्र भारत भीमेन नाराचाभिहता गजाः ।
पेतुः सेदुश्च नेदुश्च दिशश्च परिबभ्रमुः ॥२८॥
28. tatra bhārata bhīmena nārācābhihatā gajāḥ ,
petuḥ seduśca neduśca diśaśca paribabhramuḥ.
28. tatra bhārata bhīmena nārācābhihatāḥ gajāḥ
petuḥ seduḥ ca neduḥ ca diśaḥ ca paribabhramuḥ

28. O Bharata, there the elephants, struck by Bhima's iron arrows, fell, collapsed, roared, and stumbled in all directions.
छिन्नहस्ता महानागाश्छिन्नपादाश्च मारिष ।
क्रौञ्चवद्व्यनदन्भीताः पृथिवीमधिशिश्यिरे ॥२९॥
29. chinnahastā mahānāgāśchinnapādāśca māriṣa ,
krauñcavadvyanadanbhītāḥ pṛthivīmadhiśiśyire.
29. chinna-hastāḥ mahānāgāḥ chinna-pādāḥ ca māriṣa
krauñcavat vyanadan bhītāḥ pṛthivīm adhiśiśyire
29. māriṣa chinna-hastāḥ ca chinna-pādāḥ bhītāḥ
mahānāgāḥ krauñcavat vyanadan pṛthivīm adhiśiśyire
29. O venerable one, those great elephants, with their trunks and feet severed, roared in terror like Krauncha birds and lay upon the earth.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च हयानीकमभिद्रुतौ ।
ते हयाः काञ्चनापीडा रुक्मभाण्डपरिच्छदाः ।
वध्यमाना व्यदृश्यन्त शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥३०॥
30. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca hayānīkamabhidrutau ,
te hayāḥ kāñcanāpīḍā rukmabhāṇḍaparicchadāḥ ,
vadhyamānā vyadṛśyanta śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
30. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca hayānīkam
abhidrutau te hayāḥ kāñcanāpīḍāḥ
rukmabhāṇḍaparicchadāḥ vadhyamānāḥ
vyadṛśyanta śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ

30. Nakula and Sahadeva attacked the cavalry. Those horses, adorned with golden head-ornaments and golden trappings, were then seen being killed by hundreds and thousands.
पतद्भिश्च हयै राजन्समास्तीर्यत मेदिनी ।
निर्जिह्वैश्च श्वसद्भिश्च कूजद्भिश्च गतासुभिः ।
हयैर्बभौ नरश्रेष्ठ नानारूपधरैर्धरा ॥३१॥
31. patadbhiśca hayai rājansamāstīryata medinī ,
nirjihvaiśca śvasadbhiśca kūjadbhiśca gatāsubhiḥ ,
hayairbabhau naraśreṣṭha nānārūpadharairdharā.

31. O King, the earth was completely covered by falling horses. O best among men, the ground shone with horses of various forms: those rendered silent, those still breathing, some groaning, and yet others completely lifeless.
अर्जुनेन हतैः संख्ये तथा भारत वाजिभिः ।
प्रबभौ वसुधा घोरा तत्र तत्र विशां पते ॥३२॥
32. arjunena hataiḥ saṁkhye tathā bhārata vājibhiḥ ,
prababhau vasudhā ghorā tatra tatra viśāṁ pate.

32. O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), O Lord of the people (viśām pate), the dreadful earth shone brightly here and there, [covered] by horses slain by Arjuna in battle.
रथैर्भग्नैर्ध्वजैश्छिन्नैश्छत्रैश्च सुमहाप्रभैः ।
हारैर्निष्कैः सकेयूरैः शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः ॥३३॥
33. rathairbhagnairdhvajaiśchinnaiśchatraiśca sumahāprabhaiḥ ,
hārairniṣkaiḥ sakeyūraiḥ śirobhiśca sakuṇḍalaiḥ.
33. rathaiḥ bhagnaiḥ dhvajaiḥ chinnaiḥ chatraiḥ ca sumahāprabhaiḥ
hāraiḥ niṣkaiḥ sakeyūraiḥ śirobhiḥ ca sakuṇḍalaiḥ
33. rathaiḥ bhagnaiḥ dhvajaiḥ chinnaiḥ chatraiḥ ca sumahāprabhaiḥ
hāraiḥ niṣkaiḥ sakeyūraiḥ śirobhiḥ ca sakuṇḍalaiḥ
33. With broken chariots, torn banners, and resplendent parasols; with necklaces, gold ornaments, armlets, and heads with earrings.
उष्णीषैरपविद्धैश्च पताकाभिश्च सर्वषः ।
अनुकर्षैः शुभै राजन्योक्त्रैश्चव्यसुरश्मिभिः ।
संछन्ना वसुधा भाति वसन्ते कुसुमैरिव ॥३४॥
34. uṣṇīṣairapaviddhaiśca patākābhiśca sarvaṣaḥ ,
anukarṣaiḥ śubhai rājanyoktraiścavyasuraśmibhiḥ ,
saṁchannā vasudhā bhāti vasante kusumairiva.

ca patākābhiḥ ca sarvaśaḥ anukarṣaiḥ
śubhaiḥ yoktraiḥ ca vyasuraśmibhiḥ
saṃchannā bhāti vasante kusumaiḥ iva
34. And with discarded turbans and banners scattered everywhere; with beautiful chariot poles, yokes, and lifeless reins, O King, the earth appeared completely covered, shining as if with flowers in springtime.
एवमेष क्षयो वृत्तः पाण्डूनामपि भारत ।
क्रुद्धे शांतनवे भीष्मे द्रोणे च रथसत्तमे ॥३५॥
35. evameṣa kṣayo vṛttaḥ pāṇḍūnāmapi bhārata ,
kruddhe śāṁtanave bhīṣme droṇe ca rathasattame.
35. evam eṣaḥ kṣayaḥ vṛttaḥ pāṇḍūnām api bhārata
kruddhe śāṃtanave bhīṣme droṇe ca ratha-sattame
35. bhārata evam eṣaḥ kṣayaḥ pāṇḍūnām api vṛttaḥ
śāṃtanave bhīṣme droṇe ca ratha-sattame kruddhe
35. O Bharata, this destruction similarly occurred for the Pāṇḍavas when Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, and Droṇa, the best of charioteers, were enraged.
अश्वत्थाम्नि कृपे चैव तथैव कृतवर्मणि ।
तथेतरेषु क्रुद्धेषु तावकानामपि क्षयः ॥३६॥
36. aśvatthāmni kṛpe caiva tathaiva kṛtavarmaṇi ,
tathetareṣu kruddheṣu tāvakānāmapi kṣayaḥ.
36. aśvatthāmni kṛpe ca eva tathā eva kṛtavarmaṇi
tathā itareṣu kruddheṣu tāvakānām api kṣayaḥ
36. aśvatthāmni kṛpe kṛtavarmaṇi ca eva tathā eva
tathā itareṣu kruddheṣu tāvakānām api kṣayaḥ
36. And similarly, when Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Kṛtavarmā, and likewise other warriors, were enraged, destruction also befell your side.
