Vidura, indeed a truthful woman (Satyā), reproached her own legitimate son who had been defeated by the King of Sindhu, was lying there with a sorrowful heart, not rejoicing, ignorant of righteous conduct (dharma), and causing delight to his enemies.

As long as you live, even if you are without hope, bear the burden for your welfare. Do not disparage your inner self (ātman). Do not sustain this (inner self/spirit) with meager efforts. Make your mind truly auspicious, do not be afraid, and restrain yourself.

Arise, oh wretched man! Do not lie down thus, defeated. You are making all your enemies happy, you are devoid of honor, and you bring grief to your relatives.

Indeed, a small stream is easily filled, and a mouse's cupped paws are easily filled. Similarly, a wretched man is easily content; he is satisfied even with very little.

Circling around like a hawk, you should indeed discern the enemy's weakness (chidra). [Do this] either shouting, or silently, or fearlessly, as if soaring in the sky (vyoman).

Why do you lie thus like a corpse, as if struck by a thunderbolt? O coward (kāpuruṣa), rise up! Do not lie down like this, defeated.

Do not decline, you wretched one. Become renowned through your own deeds (sva-karma). Do not be mediocre, nor last; do not be inferior. Stand firm and mighty (ūrjita)!

13.
Blaze brightly even for a moment, like a tinduka firebrand. Do not wish to live long like a smoldering chaff-fire, flameless and full of smoke. It is better to have blazed intensely for a brief moment than to have merely smoldered for a long time.

14.
May no one, born in a king's household, be as weak and servile as a she-ass. By performing one's human duty (karma) and fighting to achieve the ultimate victory in battle, one repays one's debt to (dharma) and does not blame oneself (ātman).

Wise people (paṇḍitāḥ) do not lament whether they have obtained something or not. Instead, they proceed to the next task and do not value their lives (prāṇa) for the sake of material wealth.

Either display your valor or attain that inevitable fate (death). If you have prioritized your sacred duty (dharma) even above your son, then for what purpose, indeed, do you continue to live (if not to uphold it)?

O impotent one, your merits from sacrifices and charitable acts, and all your fame, have indeed been destroyed. Your source of enjoyment has been severed. For what reason do you truly live?

Even a man who is sinking and about to fall should seize his enemy by the thigh. Though completely uprooted, one should never despond in any way. Lifting the burden, one should strive, remembering the deeds of a noble steed.
