संजय उवाच ।
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां पुनरेव सुतस्तव ।
मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य पितामहमपृच्छत ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
prabhātāyāṁ tu śarvaryāṁ punareva sutastava ,
madhye sarvasya sainyasya pitāmahamapṛcchata.

1. Sanjaya said: But when the night dawned, your son again, amidst the entire army, questioned the grandsire (Bhishma).
पाण्डवेयस्य गाङ्गेय यदेतत्सैन्यमुत्तमम् ।
प्रभूतनरनागाश्वं महारथसमाकुलम् ॥२॥
2. pāṇḍaveyasya gāṅgeya yadetatsainyamuttamam ,
prabhūtanaranāgāśvaṁ mahārathasamākulam.
2. pāṇḍaveyasya gāṅgeya yat etat sainyam uttamam
| prabhūta-nara-nāga-aśvam mahāratha-samākulam

2. O Gāṅgeya, this excellent army of the Pāṇḍava sons, which is rich in men, elephants, and horses, and crowded with great charioteers.
भीमार्जुनप्रभृतिभिर्महेष्वासैर्महाबलैः ।
लोकपालोपमैर्गुप्तं धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमैः ॥३॥
3. bhīmārjunaprabhṛtibhirmaheṣvāsairmahābalaiḥ ,
lokapālopamairguptaṁ dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamaiḥ.
3. bhīma-arjuna-prabhṛtibhiḥ mahā-iṣvāsaiḥ mahā-balaiḥ
| lokapāla-upamaiḥ guptam dhṛṣṭadyumna-purogamaiḥ

3. Guarded by Bhima, Arjuna, and other mighty warriors who are great archers, resembling the world's protectors, and led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
अप्रधृष्यमनावार्यमुद्वृत्तमिव सागरम् ।
सेनासागरमक्षोभ्यमपि देवैर्महाहवे ॥४॥
4. apradhṛṣyamanāvāryamudvṛttamiva sāgaram ,
senāsāgaramakṣobhyamapi devairmahāhave.
4. apradhṛṣyam anāvāryam udvṛttam iva sāgaram
senāsāgaram akṣobhyam api devaiḥ mahāhave
4. senāsāgaram apradhṛṣyam anāvāryam udvṛttam
sāgaram iva mahāhave devaiḥ api akṣobhyam
4. This ocean-like army (senāsāgaram) is irresistible, unstoppable, and unshakable even by the gods in a great battle, just like an overflowing ocean.
केन कालेन गाङ्गेय क्षपयेथा महाद्युते ।
आचार्यो वा महेष्वासः कृपो वा सुमहाबलः ॥५॥
5. kena kālena gāṅgeya kṣapayethā mahādyute ,
ācāryo vā maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpo vā sumahābalaḥ.

ācāryaḥ vā maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpaḥ vā sumahābalaḥ
5. gāṅgeya mahādyute,
kena kālena (tvam) kṣapayethāḥ? vā ācāryaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ,
vā kṛpaḥ sumahābalaḥ (kṣapayethāḥ)?
5. O son of Gaṅgā (gāṅgeya), O greatly effulgent one, in how much time would you destroy (our enemies)? Or would the preceptor (ācārya) (Droṇa), the great archer, or Kṛpa, the very mighty one (destroy them)?
कर्णो वा समरश्लाघी द्रौणिर्वा द्विजसत्तमः ।
दिव्यास्त्रविदुषः सर्वे भवन्तो हि बले मम ॥६॥
6. karṇo vā samaraślāghī drauṇirvā dvijasattamaḥ ,
divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve bhavanto hi bale mama.
6. karṇaḥ vā samaraślāghī drauṇiḥ vā dvijasattamaḥ
divyāstraviduṣaḥ sarve bhavantaḥ hi bale mama
6. vā karṇaḥ samaraślāghī,
vā drauṇiḥ dvijasattamaḥ (kṣapayethāḥ)? hi sarve bhavantaḥ mama bale divyāstraviduṣaḥ (sthāḥ).
6. Or Karṇa, who glories in battle, or Droṇi (Aśvatthāmā), the best among the twice-born (dvijasattama)? Indeed, all of you are knowers of divine weapons in my army.
एतदिच्छाम्यहं ज्ञातुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे ।
हृदि नित्यं महाबाहो वक्तुमर्हसि तन्मम ॥७॥
7. etadicchāmyahaṁ jñātuṁ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me ,
hṛdi nityaṁ mahābāho vaktumarhasi tanmama.
7. etat icchāmi aham jñātum param kautūhalam hi
me hṛdi nityam mahābāho vaktum arhasi tat mama
7. mahābāho,
aham etat jñātum icchāmi.
hi me hṛdi nityam param kautūhalam (asti).
tvam tat mama vaktum arhasi.
7. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), I wish to know this, for indeed I constantly have great curiosity in my heart. You should therefore tell me that.
भीष्म उवाच ।
अनुरूपं कुरुश्रेष्ठ त्वय्येतत्पृथिवीपते ।
बलाबलममित्राणां स्वेषां च यदि पृच्छसि ॥८॥
8. bhīṣma uvāca ,
anurūpaṁ kuruśreṣṭha tvayyetatpṛthivīpate ,
balābalamamitrāṇāṁ sveṣāṁ ca yadi pṛcchasi.
8. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca anurūpam kuruśreṣṭha tvayi etat
pṛthivīpate balābalam amitrāṇām sveṣām ca yadi pṛcchasi
8. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca he kuruśreṣṭha he pṛthivīpate yadi
amitrāṇām sveṣām ca balābalam pṛcchasi etat tvayi anurūpam
8. Bhishma said, "O best of the Kurus, O lord of the earth, this is indeed fitting for you, if you are asking about the relative strength and weakness of both your enemies and your own forces."
शृणु राजन्मम रणे या शक्तिः परमा भवेत् ।
अस्त्रवीर्यं रणे यच्च भुजयोश्च महाभुज ॥९॥
9. śṛṇu rājanmama raṇe yā śaktiḥ paramā bhavet ,
astravīryaṁ raṇe yacca bhujayośca mahābhuja.
9. śṛṇu rājan mama raṇe yā śaktiḥ paramā bhavet
astravīryam raṇe yat ca bhujayoḥ ca mahābhuja
9. he rājan he mahābhuja mama raṇe yā paramā śaktiḥ
bhavet yat ca astravīryam bhujayoḥ ca raṇe śṛṇu
9. Listen, O King, to what supreme power (śakti) I possess in battle, and what strength of weapons and of my arms I wield in combat, O mighty-armed one.
आर्जवेनैव युद्धेन योद्धव्य इतरो जनः ।
मायायुद्धेन मायावी इत्येतद्धर्मनिश्चयः ॥१०॥
10. ārjavenaiva yuddhena yoddhavya itaro janaḥ ,
māyāyuddhena māyāvī ityetaddharmaniścayaḥ.
10. ārjavena eva yuddhena yoddhavyaḥ itaraḥ janaḥ
māyāyuddhena māyāvī iti etat dharmaniścayaḥ
10. itaraḥ janaḥ ārjavena eva yuddhena yoddhavyaḥ māyāvī
māyāyuddhena (yoḍḍhavyaḥ) iti etat dharmaniścayaḥ
10. Other people should be fought with straightforward warfare. However, a deceitful person (māyāvī) should be engaged with deceptive (māyā) warfare. This is the established principle (dharma) of right conduct.
हन्यामहं महाबाहो पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ।
दिवसे दिवसे कृत्वा भागं प्रागाह्निकं मम ॥११॥
11. hanyāmahaṁ mahābāho pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm ,
divase divase kṛtvā bhāgaṁ prāgāhnikaṁ mama.
11. hanyām aham mahābāho pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm
divase divase kṛtvā bhāgam prāgāhnikam mama
11. he mahābāho aham pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm divase
divase mama prāgāhnikam bhāgam kṛtvā hanyām
11. O mighty-armed one, I could indeed slay the army (anīkinī) of the Pāṇḍavas, day after day, after completing my allotted daily portion (of fighting).
योधानां दशसाहस्रं कृत्वा भागं महाद्युते ।
सहस्रं रथिनामेकमेष भागो मतो मम ॥१२॥
12. yodhānāṁ daśasāhasraṁ kṛtvā bhāgaṁ mahādyute ,
sahasraṁ rathināmekameṣa bhāgo mato mama.
12. yodhānām daśasāhasram kṛtvā bhāgam mahādyute |
sāhasram rathinām ekam eṣaḥ bhāgaḥ mataḥ mama
12. mahādyute,
yodhānām daśasāhasram rathinām ekam sāhasram bhāgam kṛtvā,
eṣaḥ bhāgaḥ mama mataḥ.
12. O greatly radiant one, I consider this my strategic division (bhāga): ten thousand warriors and one thousand charioteers.
अनेनाहं विधानेन संनद्धः सततोत्थितः ।
क्षपयेयं महत्सैन्यं कालेनानेन भारत ॥१३॥
13. anenāhaṁ vidhānena saṁnaddhaḥ satatotthitaḥ ,
kṣapayeyaṁ mahatsainyaṁ kālenānena bhārata.
13. anena aham vidhānena saṃnaddhaḥ satatotthitaḥ
| kṣapayeyam mahat sainyam kālena anena bhārata
13. bhārata,
anena vidhānena,
aham saṃnaddhaḥ satatotthitaḥ,
anena kālena mahat sainyam kṣapayeyam.
13. O Bhārata, by this method, I, fully armed and always ready, could destroy a great army within this timeframe.
यदि त्वस्त्राणि मुञ्चेयं महान्ति समरे स्थितः ।
शतसाहस्रघातीनि हन्यां मासेन भारत ॥१४॥
14. yadi tvastrāṇi muñceyaṁ mahānti samare sthitaḥ ,
śatasāhasraghātīni hanyāṁ māsena bhārata.
14. yadi tu astrāṇi muñceyam mahānti samare sthitaḥ
| śatasāhasraghātīni hanyām māsena bhārata
14. bhārata,
yadi tu samare sthitaḥ,
mahānti śatasāhasraghātīni astrāṇi muñceyam,
(tadā) māsena hanyām.
14. But, O Bhārata, if I, standing firm in battle, were to unleash powerful weapons, those capable of slaying a hundred thousand, I could destroy (the enemy) within a month.
संजय उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य तद्वाक्यं राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
पर्यपृच्छत राजेन्द्र द्रोणमङ्गिरसां वरम् ॥१५॥
15. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śrutvā bhīṣmasya tadvākyaṁ rājā duryodhanastadā ,
paryapṛcchata rājendra droṇamaṅgirasāṁ varam.
15. saṃjayaḥ uvāca | śrutvā bhīṣmasya tat vākyam rājā duryodhanaḥ
tadā | paryapṛcchat rājendra droṇam aṅgirasām varam
15. saṃjayaḥ uvāca: rājendra,
tadā rājā duryodhanaḥ bhīṣmasya tat vākyam śrutvā,
aṅgirasām varam droṇam paryapṛcchat.
15. Saṃjaya said: O king, at that time, King Duryodhana, having heard those words of Bhīṣma, questioned Droṇa, the best among the Aṅgirases.
आचार्य केन कालेन पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैनिकान् ।
निहन्या इति तं द्रोणः प्रत्युवाच हसन्निव ॥१६॥
16. ācārya kena kālena pāṇḍuputrasya sainikān ,
nihanyā iti taṁ droṇaḥ pratyuvāca hasanniva.
16. ācārya kena kālena pāṇḍuputrasya sainikān
nihanyāḥ iti tam droṇaḥ pratyuvāca hasan iva
16. ācārya,
kena kālena pāṇḍuputrasya sainikān nihanyāḥ iti tam droṇaḥ hasan iva pratyuvāca.
16. Duryodhana asked, "O preceptor (ācārya), in how much time could you destroy the soldiers of Pāṇḍu's son?" To this, Droṇa replied as if laughing.
स्थविरोऽस्मि कुरुश्रेष्ठ मन्दप्राणविचेष्टितः ।
अस्त्राग्निना निर्दहेयं पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ॥१७॥
17. sthaviro'smi kuruśreṣṭha mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ ,
astrāgninā nirdaheyaṁ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm.
17. sthaviraḥ asmi kurūśreṣṭha mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ
astrāgninā nirdaheyam pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm
17. kurūśreṣṭha,
aham sthaviraḥ asmi,
mandaprāṇaviceṣṭitaḥ api.
astrāgninā pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm nirdaheyam.
17. O best of Kurus, I am old, and my vital activities are diminished. Yet, I could consume the army of the Pāṇḍavas with the fire of my weapons.
यथा भीष्मः शांतनवो मासेनेति मतिर्मम ।
एषा मे परमा शक्तिरेतन्मे परमं बलम् ॥१८॥
18. yathā bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo māseneti matirmama ,
eṣā me paramā śaktiretanme paramaṁ balam.
18. yathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ māsena iti matiḥ mama
eṣā me paramā śaktiḥ etat me paramam balam
18. mama matiḥ,
yathā śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ (karoti),
(tathā) māsena (aham karomi) iti.
eṣā me paramā śaktiḥ,
etat me paramam balam.
18. My opinion is that I (could destroy the army) in a month, just as Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, (could). This is my supreme power (śakti), this is my supreme strength.
द्वाभ्यामेव तु मासाभ्यां कृपः शारद्वतोऽब्रवीत् ।
द्रौणिस्तु दशरात्रेण प्रतिजज्ञे बलक्षयम् ।
कर्णस्तु पञ्चरात्रेण प्रतिजज्ञे महास्त्रवित् ॥१९॥
19. dvābhyāmeva tu māsābhyāṁ kṛpaḥ śāradvato'bravīt ,
drauṇistu daśarātreṇa pratijajñe balakṣayam ,
karṇastu pañcarātreṇa pratijajñe mahāstravit.
19. dvābhyām eva tu māsābhyām kṛpaḥ
śāradvataḥ abravīt drauṇiḥ tu daśarātreṇa
pratijajñe balakṣayam karṇaḥ tu
pañcarātreṇa pratijajñe mahāstravit
19. tu śāradvataḥ kṛpaḥ dvābhyām eva māsābhyām abravīt.
drauṇiḥ tu daśarātreṇa balakṣayam pratijajñe.
mahāstravit karṇaḥ tu pañcarātreṇa pratijajñe.
19. But Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvan, said (it would take) two months. Drauṇi, however, promised the destruction of the forces in ten nights. And Karṇa, the expert in great weapons, promised it in five nights.
तच्छ्रुत्वा सूतपुत्रस्य वाक्यं सागरगासुतः ।
जहास सस्वनं हासं वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥२०॥
20. tacchrutvā sūtaputrasya vākyaṁ sāgaragāsutaḥ ,
jahāsa sasvanaṁ hāsaṁ vākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha.
20. tat śrutvā sūtaputrasya vākyam sāgaragāsutaḥ
jahāsa sasvanam hāsam vākyam ca idam uvāca ha
20. sāgaragāsutaḥ tat sūtaputrasya vākyam śrutvā
sasvanam hāsam jahāsa ca idam vākyam uvāca ha
20. Having heard those words of the son of Sūta (Karṇa), the son of Gaṅgā (Bhīṣma) laughed a resounding laugh and indeed spoke these words.
न हि तावद्रणे पार्थं बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम् ।
वासुदेवसमायुक्तं रथेनोद्यन्तमच्युतम् ॥२१॥
21. na hi tāvadraṇe pārthaṁ bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam ,
vāsudevasamāyuktaṁ rathenodyantamacyutam.
21. na hi tāvat raṇe pārtham bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam
vāsudevasamāyuktam rathena udyantam acyutam
21. raṇe na hi tāvat bāṇakhaḍgadhanurdharam
vāsudevasamāyuktam rathena udyantam acyutam pārtham
21. Indeed, for now you will not encounter Pārtha in battle—who bears arrows, a sword, and a bow, who is accompanied by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), and who is unswerving as he advances in his chariot.
समागच्छसि राधेय तेनैवमभिमन्यसे ।
शक्यमेवं च भूयश्च त्वया वक्तुं यथेष्टतः ॥२२॥
22. samāgacchasi rādheya tenaivamabhimanyase ,
śakyamevaṁ ca bhūyaśca tvayā vaktuṁ yatheṣṭataḥ.
22. samāgacchasi rādheya tena evam abhimanyase śakyam
evam ca bhūyaḥ ca tvayā vaktum yathā iṣṭataḥ
22. rādheya tvam samāgacchasi tena evam abhimanyase ca
tvayā evam ca bhūyaḥ yathā iṣṭataḥ vaktum śakyam
22. O son of Rādhā (Karṇa), you will not encounter (such a Pārtha), therefore you hold such an opinion (about him). It is possible for you to speak thus, and even more, as you please.
