Mārkaṇḍeya said: Jaṭāyu, the son of Aruṇa, was a friend of Daśaratha. He was the king of vultures, of great valor, and Saṃpāti was his brother.

He then saw Sītā, his daughter-in-law, seated on Rāvaṇa's lap. Out of anger, the bird attacked Rāvaṇa, the lord of rākṣasas.

3.
Then the vulture said to him, "Release, release Maithilī! How will you carry her off, O night-wanderer, while I am still alive? You will certainly not escape from me alive if you do not abandon my daughter-in-law."

Having thus spoken to that lord of rākṣasas, he severely tore him with his claws. Repeatedly battered by blows from his wings and beak, (Rāvaṇa) shed copious blood, like a mountain pouring forth its streams.

Being struck by the vulture, who was devoted to the welfare of Rama's beloved (Sita), he (Ravana) took a sword and cut off the two wings of that bird.

Having killed the king of vultures, who resembled a peak of a broken cloud, that demon (rākṣasa), holding Sita in his arms, ascended upwards.

She, the noble-minded (manasvinī) Sita, saw five excellent monkeys on the mountain slope. There she cast off a magnificent, divine garment.

Then, his very golden form, stirred by the wind, appeared among those excellent monkeys. It shone brightly in the midst of the five (peers or mountains), like a flash of lightning within the clouds.

Thus, with Vaidehī (Sītā) abducted, the wise Rāma, having slain the great deer, returned and then saw his brother Lakṣmaṇa.

“How could you abandon Vaidehī (Sītā) in a forest frequented by demons (rākṣasas)?”, he asked. Seeing his brother thus, he reprimanded him, saying, “You have come (alone)!”

Then, pondering his own entanglement by the demon (rākṣasa) disguised as a deer, and also his brother's arrival (alone), he was greatly grieved.

Still rebuking, Rama swiftly approached him. "Lakshmana, I cannot tell if Vaidehi (Sita) is alive or not."

Lakshmana then recounted to him (Rama) all of Sita's words, those unsuitable final words that Vaidehi (Sita) had spoken.

But with a burning heart, Rama rushed towards the hermitage. There, he then saw a slain vulture (Jatayu), enormous like a mountain.

But suspecting him to be a demon (rākṣasa), Rama, the descendant of Kakutstha, having powerfully drawn his bow, then rushed towards him along with Lakshmana.

That radiant one spoke to Rama and Lakshmana, who were together. He said, "I am the king of vultures, and may good fortune be upon you both. Indeed, I am a friend of Dasharatha."

Having heard his words and grasped their two beautiful bows, Rama and Lakshmana then asked, "Who is this person who mentions our father by name?"

Then Rama and Lakshmana saw him (Jatayu) with his two wings severed, in that state. The vulture then recounted to them how he was wounded by Ravana for Sita's sake.

Understanding his (Sugrīva's) intention to go south (for seclusion), Rama, honoring his father's friend, ensured that he received the purificatory rite (saṃskāra).

Then, upon seeing the hermitage – its grass mats and water-jars scattered, its water-pots shattered, desolate, and frequented by packs of jackals...

Overcome by sorrow and grief, and tormented by the abduction of Vaidehī (Sita), those two tormentors of foes (Rama and Lakshmana) traveled southwards to the Daṇḍakāraṇya forest.

24.
In that vast forest, Rama, accompanied by Saumitri (Lakshmana), saw herds of deer fleeing in all directions. He also heard the terrifying sounds of creatures, like the growing roar of a forest fire.

25.
Within a moment, they both saw Kabandha, a fearsome sight, who resembled a mountain and a cloud. He possessed shoulders like a śāla tree trunk, mighty arms, large eyes situated on his chest, and a huge belly along with a gaping mouth.

Then, by chance, that demon seized Lakṣmaṇa in its hand. Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) immediately fell into despair.

27.
After intently observing Rama, and seeing how his own face was being drawn towards that (demon's) mouth, he (Lakṣmaṇa), dejected, said to Rama, "Look at this predicament of mine!"

Indeed, there is the abduction of Vaidehi (Sītā), and this misfortune that has befallen me, and your loss of kingdom, and likewise the death of our father.

I will not see you, along with Vaidehī (Sītā), when you return to Kosala and are established in the ancestral kingdom of this earth.

Fortunate are those who will see the noble one's face, consecrated with kuśa grass, parched rice (lājā), and śamī twigs, just as one sees the moon adorned with clouds.

Thus, the wise Lakṣmaṇa lamented in many ways. Then Kakutstha (Rāma), who remained unagitated even amidst agitations, spoke to him.

32.
Do not grieve, O tiger among men! Nothing is impossible while I (Rāma) am present. Cut off his right arm; his left arm has already been severed by me.

As he spoke thus, Rama severed his arm with a very sharp sword, cutting it off like a sesame stalk.

Then, the mighty Rama struck his (Kabandha's) right arm with his sword. And Lakshmana, observing his brother Rama standing [ready],

Lakshmana then powerfully struck that demon on its side. Immediately after, the colossal Kabandha, having lost its life, fell to the ground.

A divine-looking person (puruṣa), emerging from Kabandha's body, was seen ascending into the sky, shining there like the sun.

The eloquent Rāma asked him, "Who are you? Please tell me, as I am asking. What is this strange and wonderful thing that appears to me and fills me with longing?"

To him, the gandharva named Viśvāvasu recounted: "O King, I am Viśvāvasu, who, having been cursed by Brahmā, have attained a birth (yoni) frequented by rākṣasas."

Here dwells Sugriva, accompanied by his four ministers. He is the brother of Vali, the king of the monkeys, who wears a golden garland.

This much we can tell you: you will certainly see Janaki, because Ravana's abode is known to the king of the monkeys (Sugriva).

43.
Having spoken thus, that divine (divya) person (puruṣa) of great splendor vanished. And both those heroes, Rama and Lakshmana, were filled with wonder.
