वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स गन्धर्ववचः श्रुत्वा तत्तदा भरतर्षभ ।
अर्जुनः परया प्रीत्या पूर्णचन्द्र इवाबभौ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa gandharvavacaḥ śrutvā tattadā bharatarṣabha ,
arjunaḥ parayā prītyā pūrṇacandra ivābabhau.

bharatarṣabha | arjunaḥ parayā prītyā pūrṇacandraḥ iva ababhau
1. Vaiśampāyana said: O best among the Bharatas, having heard the words of the Gandharva, Arjuna then shone with supreme delight like the full moon.
उवाच च महेष्वासो गन्धर्वं कुरुसत्तमः ।
जातकौतूहलोऽतीव वसिष्ठस्य तपोबलात् ॥२॥
2. uvāca ca maheṣvāso gandharvaṁ kurusattamaḥ ,
jātakautūhalo'tīva vasiṣṭhasya tapobalāt.
2. uvāca ca maheṣvāsaḥ gandharvam kurusattamaḥ
| jātakautūhalaḥ atīva vasiṣṭhasya tapasbalāt
2. And the great archer (maheṣvāsa), the best of the Kurus, spoke to the Gandharva, as extreme curiosity had arisen in him regarding the power of austerity (tapas) of Vasiṣṭha.
वसिष्ठ इति यस्यैतदृषेर्नाम त्वयेरितम् ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं यथावत्तद्वदस्व मे ॥३॥
3. vasiṣṭha iti yasyaitadṛṣernāma tvayeritam ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotuṁ yathāvattadvadasva me.
3. vasiṣṭhaḥ iti yasya etat ṛṣeḥ nāma tvayā īritam |
etat icchāmi aham śrotum yathāvat tat vadasva me
3. I wish to hear properly about this sage whose name 'Vasiṣṭha' was mentioned by you; please tell me that.
य एष गन्धर्वपते पूर्वेषां नः पुरोहितः ।
आसीदेतन्ममाचक्ष्व क एष भगवानृषिः ॥४॥
4. ya eṣa gandharvapate pūrveṣāṁ naḥ purohitaḥ ,
āsīdetanmamācakṣva ka eṣa bhagavānṛṣiḥ.
4. yaḥ eṣaḥ gandharvapate pūrveṣām naḥ purohitaḥ
| āsīt etat mama ācakṣva kaḥ eṣaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
4. O lord of Gandharvas, please tell me, who is this venerable sage who was the priest for our ancestors?
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
तपसा निर्जितौ शश्वदजेयावमरैरपि ।
कामक्रोधावुभौ यस्य चरणौ संववाहतुः ॥५॥
5. gandharva uvāca ,
tapasā nirjitau śaśvadajeyāvamarairapi ,
kāmakrodhāvubhau yasya caraṇau saṁvavāhatuḥ.
5. gandharvaḥ uvāca | tapasā nirjitau śaśvat ajeyau amaraiḥ
api | kāmakrodhau ubhau yasya caraṇau saṃvavāhatuḥ
5. The Gandharva said: "Desire and anger, both of which are perpetually unconquerable even by the immortals and which he conquered by austerity (tapas), served as his feet."
यस्तु नोच्छेदनं चक्रे कुशिकानामुदारधीः ।
विश्वामित्रापराधेन धारयन्मन्युमुत्तमम् ॥६॥
6. yastu nocchedanaṁ cakre kuśikānāmudāradhīḥ ,
viśvāmitrāparādhena dhārayanmanyumuttamam.
6. yaḥ tu na ucchedanam cakre kuśikānām udāradhīḥ
viśvāmitrāparādhena dhārayan manyum uttamam
6. But he, the magnanimous one, even though he harbored immense anger (manyu) due to Viśvāmitra's offense, did not cause the extermination of the Kuśikas.
पुत्रव्यसनसंतप्तः शक्तिमानपि यः प्रभुः ।
विश्वामित्रविनाशाय न मेने कर्म दारुणम् ॥७॥
7. putravyasanasaṁtaptaḥ śaktimānapi yaḥ prabhuḥ ,
viśvāmitravināśāya na mene karma dāruṇam.
7. putravyasanasaṃtaptaḥ śaktimān api yaḥ prabhuḥ
viśvāmitravināśāya na mene karma dāruṇam
7. He, who was powerful and capable, though deeply tormented by the grief of losing his sons, did not consider a dreadful act for Viśvāmitra's destruction.
मृतांश्च पुनराहर्तुं यः स पुत्रान्यमक्षयात् ।
कृतान्तं नातिचक्राम वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥८॥
8. mṛtāṁśca punarāhartuṁ yaḥ sa putrānyamakṣayāt ,
kṛtāntaṁ nāticakrāma velāmiva mahodadhiḥ.
8. mṛtān ca punaḥ āhartum yaḥ saḥ putrān yamakṣayāt
kṛtāntam na aticakrāma velām iva mahodadhiḥ
8. He, who wished to bring his dead sons back from Yama's abode, could not transgress the decree of fate (kṛtānta), just as the great ocean does not transgress its shore.
यं प्राप्य विजितात्मानं महात्मानं नराधिपाः ।
इक्ष्वाकवो महीपाला लेभिरे पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥९॥
9. yaṁ prāpya vijitātmānaṁ mahātmānaṁ narādhipāḥ ,
ikṣvākavo mahīpālā lebhire pṛthivīmimām.
9. yam prāpya vijitātmānam mahātmānam narādhipāḥ
ikṣvākavaḥ mahīpālāḥ lebhire pṛthivīm imām
9. Having attained him, the self-controlled (vijitātman) and great-souled (mahātman) one, the Ikṣvāku kings, rulers of the earth, acquired this land.
पुरोहितवरं प्राप्य वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ।
ईजिरे क्रतुभिश्चापि नृपास्ते कुरुनन्दन ॥१०॥
10. purohitavaraṁ prāpya vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam ,
ījire kratubhiścāpi nṛpāste kurunandana.
10. purohitavaram prāpya vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam
ījire kratubhiḥ ca api nṛpāḥ te kurunandana
10. O delight of the Kurus, those kings, having obtained Vasiṣṭha, the excellent chief priest and the foremost among sages, also performed sacrifices.
स हि तान्याजयामास सर्वान्नृपतिसत्तमान् ।
ब्रह्मर्षिः पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ बृहस्पतिरिवामरान् ॥११॥
11. sa hi tānyājayāmāsa sarvānnṛpatisattamān ,
brahmarṣiḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha bṛhaspatirivāmarān.
11. saḥ hi tān yājayāmāsa sarvān nṛpatisattamān
brahmarṣiḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha bṛhaspatiḥ iva amarān
11. Indeed, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, that brahmin sage caused all those excellent kings to perform sacrifices, just as Bṛhaspati officiates for the gods.
तस्माद्धर्मप्रधानात्मा वेदधर्मविदीप्सितः ।
ब्राह्मणो गुणवान्कश्चित्पुरोधाः प्रविमृश्यताम् ॥१२॥
12. tasmāddharmapradhānātmā vedadharmavidīpsitaḥ ,
brāhmaṇo guṇavānkaścitpurodhāḥ pravimṛśyatām.
12. tasmāt dharmapradhānātmā vedadharmavidīpsitaḥ
brāhmaṇaḥ guṇavān kaścit purodhāḥ pravimṛśyatām
12. Therefore, let a virtuous brahmin, whose very essence (ātman) is devoted to righteousness (dharma) and who is sought after by those who understand the principles (dharma) of the Vedas, be carefully considered as a royal priest (purohita).
क्षत्रियेण हि जातेन पृथिवीं जेतुमिच्छता ।
पूर्वं पुरोहितः कार्यः पार्थ राज्याभिवृद्धये ॥१३॥
13. kṣatriyeṇa hi jātena pṛthivīṁ jetumicchatā ,
pūrvaṁ purohitaḥ kāryaḥ pārtha rājyābhivṛddhaye.
13. kṣatriyeṇa hi jātena pṛthivīm jetum icchatā
pūrvam purohitaḥ kāryaḥ pārtha rājyābhivṛddhaye
13. Indeed, O Pārtha, a born warrior (kṣatriya) who wishes to conquer the earth should first appoint a royal priest (purohita) for the prosperity of his kingdom.
महीं जिगीषता राज्ञा ब्रह्म कार्यं पुरःसरम् ।
तस्मात्पुरोहितः कश्चिद्गुणवानस्तु वो द्विजः ॥१४॥
14. mahīṁ jigīṣatā rājñā brahma kāryaṁ puraḥsaram ,
tasmātpurohitaḥ kaścidguṇavānastu vo dvijaḥ.
14. mahīm jigīṣatā rājñā brahma kāryam puraḥsaram
tasmāt purohitaḥ kaścit guṇavān astu vaḥ dvijaḥ
14. A king who wishes to conquer the earth must make a brahmin (brahma) his foremost advisor. Therefore, let a virtuous twice-born (dvija) person be your royal priest (purohita).
