अर्जुन उवाच ।
कर्ण यत्ते सभामध्ये बहु वाचा विकत्थितम् ।
न मे युधि समोऽस्तीति तदिदं प्रत्युपस्थितम् ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
karṇa yatte sabhāmadhye bahu vācā vikatthitam ,
na me yudhi samo'stīti tadidaṁ pratyupasthitam.

1. Arjuna said: "O Karna, that which you boasted so much with words in the assembly, saying, 'No one is my equal in battle,' that very situation has now presented itself."
अवोचः परुषा वाचो धर्ममुत्सृज्य केवलम् ।
इदं तु दुष्करं मन्ये यदिदं ते चिकीर्षितम् ॥२॥
2. avocaḥ paruṣā vāco dharmamutsṛjya kevalam ,
idaṁ tu duṣkaraṁ manye yadidaṁ te cikīrṣitam.
2. avocaḥ paruṣāḥ vācaḥ dharmam utsṛjya kevalam
idam tu duṣkaram manye yat idam te cikīrṣitam
2. You spoke harsh words, entirely abandoning natural law (dharma). But this, which is intended by you, I consider difficult to achieve.
यत्त्वया कथितं पूर्वं मामनासाद्य किंचन ।
तदद्य कुरु राधेय कुरुमध्ये मया सह ॥३॥
3. yattvayā kathitaṁ pūrvaṁ māmanāsādya kiṁcana ,
tadadya kuru rādheya kurumadhye mayā saha.
3. yat tvayā kathitam pūrvam mām anāsādya kiṃcana
tat adya kuru rādheya kurumadhye mayā saha
3. Whatever you declared previously without ever encountering me, O son of Radha, do that now in the midst of the Kurus, along with me.
यत्सभायां स्म पाञ्चालीं क्लिश्यमानां दुरात्मभिः ।
दृष्टवानसि तस्याद्य फलमाप्नुहि केवलम् ॥४॥
4. yatsabhāyāṁ sma pāñcālīṁ kliśyamānāṁ durātmabhiḥ ,
dṛṣṭavānasi tasyādya phalamāpnuhi kevalam.
4. yat sabhāyām sma pāñcālīm kliśyamānām durātmabhiḥ
dṛṣṭavān asi tasya adya phalam āpnuhi kevalam
4. The consequence of merely having witnessed Draupadi being tormented by wicked people in that assembly – that alone you shall now obtain.
धर्मपाशनिबद्धेन यन्मया मर्षितं पुरा ।
तस्य राधेय कोपस्य विजयं पश्य मे मृधे ॥५॥
5. dharmapāśanibaddhena yanmayā marṣitaṁ purā ,
tasya rādheya kopasya vijayaṁ paśya me mṛdhe.
5. dharmapāśanibaddhena yat mayā marṣitam purā
tasya rādheya kopasya vijayam paśya me mṛdhe
5. O son of Rādhā (Radheya), behold in battle my victory, which stems from the anger that I formerly suppressed, bound as I was by the noose of natural law (dharma).
एहि कर्ण मया सार्धं प्रतिपद्यस्व संगरम् ।
प्रेक्षकाः कुरवः सर्वे भवन्तु सहसैनिकाः ॥६॥
6. ehi karṇa mayā sārdhaṁ pratipadyasva saṁgaram ,
prekṣakāḥ kuravaḥ sarve bhavantu sahasainikāḥ.
6. ehi karṇa mayā sārdham pratipadyasva saṃgaram
prekṣakāḥ kuravaḥ sarve bhavantu sahasainikāḥ
6. Come, Karna, engage in battle with me! Let all the Kurus, along with their soldiers, be spectators.
कर्ण उवाच ।
ब्रवीषि वाचा यत्पार्थ कर्मणा तत्समाचर ।
अतिशेते हि वै वाचं कर्मेति प्रथितं भुवि ॥७॥
7. karṇa uvāca ,
bravīṣi vācā yatpārtha karmaṇā tatsamācara ,
atiśete hi vai vācaṁ karmeti prathitaṁ bhuvi.
7. karṇa uvāca bravīṣi vācā yat pārtha karmaṇā tat
samācara atiśete hi vai vācam karma iti prathitam bhuvi
7. Karna said: O son of Pṛthā (Pārtha), whatever you speak with words, perform it with action (karma)! For it is indeed renowned on earth that action (karma) surpasses speech.
यत्त्वया मर्षितं पूर्वं तदशक्तेन मर्षितम् ।
इति गृह्णामि तत्पार्थ तव दृष्ट्वापराक्रमम् ॥८॥
8. yattvayā marṣitaṁ pūrvaṁ tadaśaktena marṣitam ,
iti gṛhṇāmi tatpārtha tava dṛṣṭvāparākramam.
8. yat tvayā marṣitam pūrvaṃ tat aśaktena marṣitam
iti gṛhṇāmi tat pārtha tava dṛṣṭvā aparākramam
8. Whatever you tolerated before, I then considered it to have been endured by one who was powerless. But now, O Pārtha, having witnessed your valor, I understand the true meaning of that tolerance.
धर्मपाशनिबद्धेन यदि ते मर्षितं पुरा ।
तथैव बद्धमात्मानमबद्धमिव मन्यसे ॥९॥
9. dharmapāśanibaddhena yadi te marṣitaṁ purā ,
tathaiva baddhamātmānamabaddhamiva manyase.
9. dharmapāśa nibaddhena yadi te marṣitam purā
tathā eva baddham ātmānam abaddham iva manyase
9. If you tolerated it in the past, being bound by the fetters of natural law (dharma), then you consider your self (ātman) as if unbound, even though it is (truly) bound.
यदि तावद्वने वासो यथोक्तश्चरितस्त्वया ।
तत्त्वं धर्मार्थवित्क्लिष्टः समयं भेत्तुमिच्छसि ॥१०॥
10. yadi tāvadvane vāso yathoktaścaritastvayā ,
tattvaṁ dharmārthavitkliṣṭaḥ samayaṁ bhettumicchasi.
10. yadi tāvat vane vāsaḥ yathā uktaḥ caritaḥ tvayā tat
tvam dharmārthavit kliṣṭaḥ samayam bhettum icchasi
10. If your dwelling in the forest was indeed carried out by you exactly as prescribed, then you, though distressed and a knower of natural law (dharma) and purpose, now wish to break the agreement.
यदि शक्रः स्वयं पार्थ युध्यते तव कारणात् ।
तथापि न व्यथा काचिन्मम स्याद्विक्रमिष्यतः ॥११॥
11. yadi śakraḥ svayaṁ pārtha yudhyate tava kāraṇāt ,
tathāpi na vyathā kācinmama syādvikramiṣyataḥ.
11. yadi śakraḥ svayam pārtha yudhyate tava kāraṇāt
tathā api na vyathā kācit mama syāt vikramiṣyataḥ
11. Even if Indra himself, O Pārtha, fights on your behalf, still there would be no distress for me, who am prepared to demonstrate my prowess.
अयं कौन्तेय कामस्ते नचिरात्समुपस्थितः ।
योत्स्यसे त्वं मया सार्धमद्य द्रक्ष्यसि मे बलम् ॥१२॥
12. ayaṁ kaunteya kāmaste nacirātsamupasthitaḥ ,
yotsyase tvaṁ mayā sārdhamadya drakṣyasi me balam.
12. ayam kaunteya kāmaḥ te nacirāt samupasthitaḥ
yotsyase tvam mayā sārdham adya drakṣyasi me balam
12. O son of Kunti, this desire of yours will soon be fulfilled. You will fight with me, and today you will witness my strength.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
इदानीमेव तावत्त्वमपयातो रणान्मम ।
तेन जीवसि राधेय निहतस्त्वनुजस्तव ॥१३॥
13. arjuna uvāca ,
idānīmeva tāvattvamapayāto raṇānmama ,
tena jīvasi rādheya nihatastvanujastava.
13. arjuna uvāca idānīm eva tāvat tvam apayātaḥ raṇāt
mama tena jīvasi rādheya nihataḥ tu anujaḥ tava
13. Arjuna said: 'Indeed, just now you retreated from my battle. That is why you are alive, O son of Rādhā, while your younger brother has been killed.'
भ्रातरं घातयित्वा च त्यक्त्वा रणशिरश्च कः ।
त्वदन्यः पुरुषः सत्सु ब्रूयादेवं व्यवस्थितः ॥१४॥
14. bhrātaraṁ ghātayitvā ca tyaktvā raṇaśiraśca kaḥ ,
tvadanyaḥ puruṣaḥ satsu brūyādevaṁ vyavasthitaḥ.
14. bhrātaram ghātayitvā ca tyaktvā raṇaśiraḥ ca kaḥ
tvat anyaḥ puruṣaḥ satsu brūyāt evam vyavasthitaḥ
14. And who else, having caused his brother to be killed and having abandoned the forefront of battle, would speak thus among respectable people while situated in such a position? No other person (puruṣa) besides you would.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इति कर्णं ब्रुवन्नेव बीभत्सुरपराजितः ।
अभ्ययाद्विसृजन्बाणान्कायावरणभेदिनः ॥१५॥
15. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
iti karṇaṁ bruvanneva bībhatsuraparājitaḥ ,
abhyayādvisṛjanbāṇānkāyāvaraṇabhedinaḥ.
15. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca iti karṇam bruvan eva bībhatsuḥ
aparājitaḥ abhyayāt visṛjan bāṇān kāyāvaraṇabhedinaḥ
15. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'Even while speaking thus to Karna, the undefeated Arjuna (Bībhatsu) advanced, releasing arrows that pierced through armor.'
प्रतिजग्राह तान्कर्णः शरानग्निशिखोपमान् ।
शरवर्षेण महता वर्षमाण इवाम्बुदः ॥१६॥
16. pratijagrāha tānkarṇaḥ śarānagniśikhopamān ,
śaravarṣeṇa mahatā varṣamāṇa ivāmbudaḥ.
16. pratijagrāha tān karṇaḥ śarān agniśikhopamān
śaravarṣeṇa mahatā varṣamāṇaḥ iva ambudaḥ
16. Karṇa received those arrows, which were like flames of fire. He then resembled a cloud, raining down a great shower of arrows.
उत्पेतुः शरजालानि घोररूपाणि सर्वशः ।
अविध्यदश्वान्बाह्वोश्च हस्तावापं पृथक्पृथक् ॥१७॥
17. utpetuḥ śarajālāni ghorarūpāṇi sarvaśaḥ ,
avidhyadaśvānbāhvośca hastāvāpaṁ pṛthakpṛthak.
17. utpetuḥ śarajālāni ghorarūpāṇi sarvaśaḥ avidhyat
aśvān bāhvoḥ ca hastāvāpam pṛthak pṛthak
17. Frightful volleys of arrows shot forth from all directions. (Arjuna) pierced the horses and, separately, struck the arm-guards on both (Karṇa's) arms.
सोऽमृष्यमाणः कर्णस्य निषङ्गस्यावलम्बनम् ।
चिच्छेद निशिताग्रेण शरेण नतपर्वणा ॥१८॥
18. so'mṛṣyamāṇaḥ karṇasya niṣaṅgasyāvalambanam ,
ciccheda niśitāgreṇa śareṇa nataparvaṇā.
18. saḥ amṛṣyamāṇaḥ karṇasya niṣaṅgasya avalambanam
ciccheda niśitāgreṇa śareṇa nataparvaṇā
18. Unable to tolerate (Karṇa's actions), he (Arjuna) cut the strap of Karṇa's quiver with a sharp-tipped, well-feathered arrow.
उपासङ्गादुपादाय कर्णो बाणानथापरान् ।
विव्याध पाण्डवं हस्ते तस्य मुष्टिरशीर्यत ॥१९॥
19. upāsaṅgādupādāya karṇo bāṇānathāparān ,
vivyādha pāṇḍavaṁ haste tasya muṣṭiraśīryata.
19. upāsaṅgāt upādāya karṇaḥ bāṇān atha aparān
vivyādha pāṇḍavam haste tasya muṣṭiḥ aśīryata
19. Then Karṇa, taking other arrows from his quiver, pierced the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) in the hand. As a result, his (Arjuna's) grip became loose.
ततः पार्थो महाबाहुः कर्णस्य धनुरच्छिनत् ।
स शक्तिं प्राहिणोत्तस्मै तां पार्थो व्यधमच्छरैः ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ pārtho mahābāhuḥ karṇasya dhanuracchinat ,
sa śaktiṁ prāhiṇottasmai tāṁ pārtho vyadhamaccharaiḥ.
20. tataḥ pārthaḥ mahābāhuḥ karṇasya dhanuḥ acchinat sa
śaktiṃ prāhiṇot tasmai tāṃ pārthaḥ vyadhamat śaraiḥ
20. Then, the mighty-armed Arjuna cut off Karṇa's bow. Karṇa then hurled a spear (śakti) at Arjuna, but Arjuna shattered it with his arrows.
ततोऽभिपेतुर्बहवो राधेयस्य पदानुगाः ।
तांश्च गाण्डीवनिर्मुक्तैः प्राहिणोद्यमसादनम् ॥२१॥
21. tato'bhipeturbahavo rādheyasya padānugāḥ ,
tāṁśca gāṇḍīvanirmuktaiḥ prāhiṇodyamasādanam.
21. tataḥ abhipetuḥ bahavaḥ rādheyasya padānugāḥ
tān ca gāṇḍīvanirmuktaiḥ prāhiṇot yamasādanam
21. Then, many followers of Radheya (Karṇa) rushed towards Arjuna. He sent those (followers) to the abode of Yama (death) with arrows released from his Gaṇḍīva bow.
ततोऽस्याश्वाञ्शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्बीभत्सुर्भारसाधनैः ।
आकर्णमुक्तैरभ्यघ्नंस्ते हताः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥२२॥
22. tato'syāśvāñśaraistīkṣṇairbībhatsurbhārasādhanaiḥ ,
ākarṇamuktairabhyaghnaṁste hatāḥ prāpatanbhuvi.
22. tataḥ asya aśvān śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ bībhatsuḥ bhārasādhanaiḥ
ākarṇamuktaiḥ abhyaghnan te hatāḥ prāpatan bhuvi
22. Then, Bibhatsu (Arjuna) struck Karṇa's horses with sharp arrows, shot with full force (ākarṇamuktaiḥ) and effective in battle (bhārasādhanaiḥ). Killed, those horses fell to the ground.
अथापरेण बाणेन ज्वलितेन महाभुजः ।
विव्याध कर्णं कौन्तेयस्तीक्ष्णेनोरसि वीर्यवान् ॥२३॥
23. athāpareṇa bāṇena jvalitena mahābhujaḥ ,
vivyādha karṇaṁ kaunteyastīkṣṇenorasi vīryavān.
23. atha apareṇa bāṇena jvalitena mahābhujaḥ vivyādha
karṇaṃ kaunteyaḥ tīkṣṇena urasi vīryavān
23. Then, the valorous (vīryavān) and mighty-armed (mahābhujaḥ) Kaunteya (Arjuna) pierced Karṇa in the chest with another sharp, blazing arrow.
तस्य भित्त्वा तनुत्राणं कायमभ्यपतच्छरः ।
ततः स तमसाविष्टो न स्म किंचित्प्रजज्ञिवान् ॥२४॥
24. tasya bhittvā tanutrāṇaṁ kāyamabhyapataccharaḥ ,
tataḥ sa tamasāviṣṭo na sma kiṁcitprajajñivān.
24. tasya bhittvā tanutrāṇam kāyam abhyapatat śaraḥ
tataḥ saḥ tamasā āviṣṭaḥ na sma kiñcit prajajñivān
24. The arrow, having pierced his armor, struck his body. Consequently, enveloped by darkness, he could not perceive anything at all.
स गाढवेदनो हित्वा रणं प्रायादुदङ्मुखः ।
ततोऽर्जुन उपाक्रोशदुत्तरश्च महारथः ॥२५॥
25. sa gāḍhavedano hitvā raṇaṁ prāyādudaṅmukhaḥ ,
tato'rjuna upākrośaduttaraśca mahārathaḥ.
25. saḥ gāḍhavedanaḥ hitvā raṇam prāyāt udaṅmukhaḥ
tataḥ arjunaḥ upākrośat uttaraḥ ca mahārathaḥ
25. Suffering intense pain, he left the battlefield and went northwards. Then Arjuna and the great chariot warrior Uttara cried out.
