वैशंपायन उवाच ।
निदाघान्तकरः कालः सर्वभूतसुखावहः ।
तत्रैव वसतां तेषां प्रावृट्समभिपद्यत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
nidāghāntakaraḥ kālaḥ sarvabhūtasukhāvahaḥ ,
tatraiva vasatāṁ teṣāṁ prāvṛṭsamabhipadyata.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: The season bringing an end to summer and bringing happiness to all beings - the rainy season - arrived for them as they were dwelling right there.
छादयन्तो महाघोषाः खं दिशश्च बलाहकाः ।
प्रववर्षुर्दिवारात्रमसिताः सततं तदा ॥२॥
2. chādayanto mahāghoṣāḥ khaṁ diśaśca balāhakāḥ ,
pravavarṣurdivārātramasitāḥ satataṁ tadā.
2. chādayantaḥ mahāghoṣāḥ kham diśaḥ ca balāhakāḥ
pravavarṣuḥ divārātram asitāḥ satatam tadā
2. Then, the dark clouds, roaring loudly and covering the sky and the directions, continuously rained day and night.
तपात्ययनिकेताश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
अपेतार्कप्रभाजालाः सविद्युद्विमलप्रभाः ॥३॥
3. tapātyayaniketāśca śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
apetārkaprabhājālāḥ savidyudvimalaprabhāḥ.

3. And then, those hundreds and thousands of clouds, marking the end of summer, appeared with a pure, lightning-like radiance, having eclipsed the sun's myriad rays.
विरूढशष्पा पृथिवी मत्तदंशसरीसृपा ।
बभूव पयसा सिक्ता शान्तधूमरजोऽरुणा ॥४॥
4. virūḍhaśaṣpā pṛthivī mattadaṁśasarīsṛpā ,
babhūva payasā siktā śāntadhūmarajo'ruṇā.

4. The earth, covered with sprouting grass and teeming with intoxicated insects and reptiles, became thoroughly moistened by the water, its smoky dust and ruddy hues having subsided.
न स्म प्रज्ञायते किंचिदम्भसा समवस्तृते ।
समं वा विषमं वापि नद्यो वा स्थावराणि वा ॥५॥
5. na sma prajñāyate kiṁcidambhasā samavastṛte ,
samaṁ vā viṣamaṁ vāpi nadyo vā sthāvarāṇi vā.
5. na sma prajñāyate kiṃcit ambhasā samavastṛte
samam vā viṣamam vā api nadyaḥ vā sthāvarāṇi vā
5. When everything was completely covered by water, nothing could be discerned - neither flat nor uneven ground, nor rivers, nor stationary objects.
क्षुब्धतोया महाघोषाः श्वसमाना इवाशुगाः ।
सिन्धवः शोभयां चक्रुः काननानि तपात्यये ॥६॥
6. kṣubdhatoyā mahāghoṣāḥ śvasamānā ivāśugāḥ ,
sindhavaḥ śobhayāṁ cakruḥ kānanāni tapātyaye.
6. kṣubdhatoyāḥ mahāghoṣāḥ śvasamānāḥ iva āśugāḥ
sindhavaḥ śobhayām cakruḥ kānanāni tapātyaye
6. At the end of summer, the rivers, their waters turbulent and roaring loudly like swift, hissing entities, beautified the forests.
नदतां काननान्तेषु श्रूयन्ते विविधाः स्वनाः ।
वृष्टिभिस्ताड्यमानानां वराहमृगपक्षिणाम् ॥७॥
7. nadatāṁ kānanānteṣu śrūyante vividhāḥ svanāḥ ,
vṛṣṭibhistāḍyamānānāṁ varāhamṛgapakṣiṇām.

vṛṣṭibhiḥ tāḍyamānānām varāhamṛgapakṣiṇām
7. Various sounds are heard at the forest edges, emanating from the boars, deer, and birds, who are both crying out and being struck by the rains.
स्तोककाः शिखिनश्चैव पुंस्कोकिलगणैः सह ।
मत्ताः परिपतन्ति स्म दर्दुराश्चैव दर्पिताः ॥८॥
8. stokakāḥ śikhinaścaiva puṁskokilagaṇaiḥ saha ,
mattāḥ paripatanti sma dardurāścaiva darpitāḥ.

mattāḥ paripatatanti sma dardurāḥ ca eva darpitāḥ
8. The rain-birds and peacocks, together with groups of male cuckoos, flew around excitedly; and the frogs too were exultant.
तथा बहुविधाकारा प्रावृण्मेघानुनादिता ।
अभ्यतीता शिवा तेषां चरतां मरुधन्वसु ॥९॥
9. tathā bahuvidhākārā prāvṛṇmeghānunāditā ,
abhyatītā śivā teṣāṁ caratāṁ marudhanvasu.

abhyatītā śivā teṣām caratām marudhanvasu
9. Thus, the rainy season, with its varied forms and resonating with the sound of rain clouds, passed auspiciously for them as they wandered in the deserts.
क्रौञ्चहंसगणाकीर्णा शरत्प्रणिहिताभवत् ।
रूढकक्षवनप्रस्था प्रसन्नजलनिम्नगा ॥१०॥
10. krauñcahaṁsagaṇākīrṇā śaratpraṇihitābhavat ,
rūḍhakakṣavanaprasthā prasannajalanimnagā.

10. Autumn became established, filled with flocks of curlews and swans. Its forests and plains had grown lush with grass, and its rivers flowed with clear waters.
विमलाकाशनक्षत्रा शरत्तेषां शिवाभवत् ।
मृगद्विजसमाकीर्णा पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥११॥
11. vimalākāśanakṣatrā śaratteṣāṁ śivābhavat ,
mṛgadvijasamākīrṇā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām.
11. vimalākāśanakṣatrā śarat teṣām śivā abhavat
mṛgadvijasamākīrṇā pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām
11. Autumn became auspicious for the great-souled (ātman) Pāṇḍavas; its sky was clear with bright stars, and the land was filled with deer and birds.
पश्यन्तः शान्तरजसः क्षपा जलदशीतलाः ।
ग्रहनक्षत्रसंघैश्च सोमेन च विराजिताः ॥१२॥
12. paśyantaḥ śāntarajasaḥ kṣapā jaladaśītalāḥ ,
grahanakṣatrasaṁghaiśca somena ca virājitāḥ.

grahanakṣatrasaṃghaiḥ ca somena ca virājitāḥ
12. The Pāṇḍavas, seeing the nights whose dust had settled, cool with dew, and splendidly adorned by the multitudes of planets, stars, and the moon.
कुमुदैः पुण्डरीकैश्च शीतवारिधराः शिवाः ।
नदीः पुष्करिणीश्चैव ददृशुः समलंकृताः ॥१३॥
13. kumudaiḥ puṇḍarīkaiśca śītavāridharāḥ śivāḥ ,
nadīḥ puṣkariṇīścaiva dadṛśuḥ samalaṁkṛtāḥ.
13. kumudaiḥ puṇḍarīkaiḥ ca śītavāridharāḥ śivāḥ
nadīḥ puṣkariṇīḥ ca eva dadṛśuḥ samalaṅkṛtāḥ
13. They saw auspicious rivers and ponds, bearing cool water and well-adorned with water lilies and white lotuses.
आकाशनीकाशतटां नीपनीवारसंकुलाम् ।
बभूव चरतां हर्षः पुण्यतीर्थां सरस्वतीम् ॥१४॥
14. ākāśanīkāśataṭāṁ nīpanīvārasaṁkulām ,
babhūva caratāṁ harṣaḥ puṇyatīrthāṁ sarasvatīm.
14. ākāśanīkāśataṭām nīpanīvārasaṅkulām babhūva
caratām harṣaḥ puṇyatīrthām sarasvatīm
14. Joy arose for those who wandered along the Sarasvatī river (Sarasvatīm), which had banks resembling the sky, was crowded with "nīpa" trees and wild rice, and featured sacred bathing places.
ते वै मुमुदिरे वीराः प्रसन्नसलिलां शिवाम् ।
पश्यन्तो दृढधन्वानः परिपूर्णां सरस्वतीम् ॥१५॥
15. te vai mumudire vīrāḥ prasannasalilāṁ śivām ,
paśyanto dṛḍhadhanvānaḥ paripūrṇāṁ sarasvatīm.
15. te vai mumudire vīrāḥ prasannasalilām śivām
paśyantaḥ dṛḍhadhanvānaḥ paripūrṇām sarasvatīm
15. The brave heroes (vīrāḥ), firm-bowed (dṛḍhadhanvānaḥ), indeed rejoiced while seeing the Sarasvatī river (Sarasvatīm), which had clear water, was auspicious, and completely full.
तेषां पुण्यतमा रात्रिः पर्वसंधौ स्म शारदी ।
तत्रैव वसतामासीत्कार्त्तिकी जनमेजय ॥१६॥
16. teṣāṁ puṇyatamā rātriḥ parvasaṁdhau sma śāradī ,
tatraiva vasatāmāsītkārttikī janamejaya.
16. teṣām puṇyatamā rātriḥ parvasandhau sma śāradī
tatra eva vasatām āsīt kārttikī janamejaya
16. O Janamejaya, for those dwelling right there, the most sacred (puṇyatamā) autumnal (śāradī) night, which coincided with a festival juncture (parvasandhau), was indeed the night of Kārttika.
पुण्यकृद्भिर्महासत्त्वैस्तापसैः सह पाण्डवाः ।
तत्सर्वं भरतश्रेष्ठाः समूहुर्योगमुत्तमम् ॥१७॥
17. puṇyakṛdbhirmahāsattvaistāpasaiḥ saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
tatsarvaṁ bharataśreṣṭhāḥ samūhuryogamuttamam.
17. puṇyakṛdbhiḥ mahāsattvaiḥ tāpasaiḥ saha pāṇḍavāḥ
tat sarvam bharataśreṣṭhāḥ samūhuḥ yogam uttamam
17. O best of Bharatas, the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by the virtuous and great-souled ascetics, undertook all those excellent spiritual disciplines (yoga).
तमिस्राभ्युदये तस्मिन्धौम्येन सह पाण्डवाः ।
सूतैः पौरोगवैश्चैव काम्यकं प्रययुर्वनम् ॥१८॥
18. tamisrābhyudaye tasmindhaumyena saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
sūtaiḥ paurogavaiścaiva kāmyakaṁ prayayurvanam.
18. tamisrābhyudaye tasmin dhaumyena saha pāṇḍavāḥ
sūtaiḥ pauragavaiḥ ca eva kāmyakam prayayuḥ vanam
18. At the start of that dark fortnight, the Pāṇḍavas, along with Dhaumya, and indeed with their charioteers and attendants, set forth for the Kāmyaka forest.
