भीष्म उवाच ।
एवं स्तुतः स भगवान्गुह्यैस्तथ्यैश्च नामभिः ।
तं मुनिं दर्शयामास नारदं विश्वरूपधृक् ॥१॥

1. bhīṣma uvāca ,

2. kiṁciccandraviśuddhātmā kiṁciccandrādviśeṣavān ,

शुकपत्रवर्णः किंचिच्च किंचित्स्फटिकसप्रभः ।

Sometimes parrot-green, and sometimes radiant like crystal. Elsewhere, resembling a mass of blue collyrium, and sometimes having the luster of gold.
प्रवालाङ्कुरवर्णश्च श्वेतवर्णः क्वचिद्बभौ ।
क्वचित्सुवर्णवर्णाभो वैडूर्यसदृशः क्वचित् ॥४॥

And sometimes, it shone with the color of new coral shoots; sometimes it was white. Sometimes it had the hue of gold, and sometimes it resembled a cat's eye gem.
नीलवैडूर्यसदृश इन्द्रनीलनिभः क्वचित् ।
मयूरग्रीववर्णाभो मुक्ताहारनिभः क्वचित् ॥५॥

Sometimes it resembled a blue cat's eye gem, sometimes it was like a sapphire. Sometimes it had the hue of a peacock's neck, and sometimes it resembled a pearl necklace.
एतान्वर्णान्बहुविधान्रूपे बिभ्रत्सनातनः ।
सहस्रनयनः श्रीमाञ्शतशीर्षः सहस्रपात् ॥६॥

The eternal (sanātana) one, glorious, thousand-eyed, hundred-headed, and thousand-footed, assumes these many diverse colors in his form.
सहस्रोदरबाहुश्च अव्यक्त इति च क्वचित् ।
ओंकारमुद्गिरन्वक्त्रात्सावित्रीं च तदन्वयाम् ॥७॥

7. sahasrodarabāhuśca avyakta iti ca kvacit ,

sahastra-udara-bāhuḥ ca avyaktaḥ iti ca kvacit

He has a thousand bellies and arms, and is sometimes called the unmanifest (avyakta). From his mouth, he uttered the sacred syllable Om (oṃkāra) and also the Sāvitrī mantra connected with it.
शेषेभ्यश्चैव वक्त्रेभ्यश्चतुर्वेदोद्गतं वसु ।
आरण्यकं जगौ देवो हरिर्नारायणो वशी ॥८॥

8. śeṣebhyaścaiva vaktrebhyaścaturvedodgataṁ vasu ,
āraṇyakaṁ jagau devo harirnārāyaṇo vaśī.

vaśī devaḥ hariḥ nārāyaṇaḥ śeṣebhyaḥ eva ca

And indeed, from his other mouths, the controlled (vaśī) god Hari-Nārāyaṇa sang the Āraṇyaka texts, which are the treasure originating from the four Vedas.
वेदीं कमण्डलुं दर्भान्मणिरूपानथोपलान् ।
अजिनं दण्डकाष्ठं च ज्वलितं च हुताशनम् ।
धारयामास देवेशो हस्तैर्यज्ञपतिस्तदा ॥९॥
अजिनं दण्डकाष्ठं च ज्वलितं च हुताशनम् ।
धारयामास देवेशो हस्तैर्यज्ञपतिस्तदा ॥९॥
9. vedīṁ kamaṇḍaluṁ darbhānmaṇirūpānathopalān ,
ajinaṁ daṇḍakāṣṭhaṁ ca jvalitaṁ ca hutāśanam ,
dhārayāmāsa deveśo hastairyajñapatistadā.

Then, the lord of gods (deveśa), the master of Vedic rituals (yajñapati), held with his hands a Vedic altar (vedī), a water-pot (kamaṇḍalu), sacred grass (darbha), gem-like stones, a deer skin (ajina), a sacrificial stick (daṇḍakāṣṭha), and a blazing fire (hutāśana).
तं प्रसन्नं प्रसन्नात्मा नारदो द्विजसत्तमः ।
वाग्यतः प्रयतो भूत्वा ववन्दे परमेश्वरम् ।
तमुवाच नतं मूर्ध्ना देवानामादिरव्ययः ॥१०॥
वाग्यतः प्रयतो भूत्वा ववन्दे परमेश्वरम् ।

10. taṁ prasannaṁ prasannātmā nārado dvijasattamaḥ ,
vāgyataḥ prayato bhūtvā vavande parameśvaram ,
tamuvāca nataṁ mūrdhnā devānāmādiravyayaḥ.

tam prasannam prasanna-ātmā nāradaḥ
dvija-sattamaḥ vāg-yataḥ prayataḥ

prasanna-ātmā dvija-sattamaḥ nāradaḥ
vāg-yataḥ prayataḥ bhūtvā tam

10.
The tranquil-souled Nārada, the best among twice-born ones (dvija), becoming restrained in speech and collected, bowed down to that appeased supreme lord (parameśvara). Then, the imperishable (avyaya) primeval one of the gods spoke to him, who was bowing his head.
एकतश्च द्वितश्चैव त्रितश्चैव महर्षयः ।
इमं देशमनुप्राप्ता मम दर्शनलालसाः ॥११॥

11. ekataśca dvitaścaiva tritaścaiva maharṣayaḥ ,

The great sages Ekata, Dvita, and Trita, longing for my sight, arrived at this region.
न च मां ते ददृशिरे न च द्रक्ष्यति कश्चन ।
ऋते ह्येकान्तिकश्रेष्ठात्त्वं चैवैकान्तिको मतः ॥१२॥

12. na ca māṁ te dadṛśire na ca drakṣyati kaścana ,
ṛte hyekāntikaśreṣṭhāttvaṁ caivaikāntiko mataḥ.

They did not see me, nor will anyone ever see me, except, indeed, the foremost among my exclusive devotees (ekāntika). And you yourself are considered an exclusive devotee (ekāntika).
ममैतास्तनवः श्रेष्ठा जाता धर्मगृहे द्विज ।
तास्त्वं भजस्व सततं साधयस्व यथागतम् ॥१३॥

13. mamaitāstanavaḥ śreṣṭhā jātā dharmagṛhe dvija ,
tāstvaṁ bhajasva satataṁ sādhayasva yathāgatam.

mama etāḥ tanavaḥ śreṣṭhāḥ jātāḥ dharmagṛhe dvija
tāḥ tvam bhajasva satatam sādhayasva yathāgatam

dvija mama etāḥ śreṣṭhāḥ tanavaḥ dharmagṛhe jātāḥ
tvam tāḥ satatam bhajasva ca yathāgatam sādhayasva
tvam tāḥ satatam bhajasva ca yathāgatam sādhayasva
13.
O twice-born (dvija), these excellent forms of mine manifested in the abode of (dharma) natural law. You should constantly worship them and accomplish your purpose appropriately.
वृणीष्व च वरं विप्र मत्तस्त्वं यमिहेच्छसि ।
प्रसन्नोऽहं तवाद्येह विश्वमूर्तिरिहाव्ययः ॥१४॥
प्रसन्नोऽहं तवाद्येह विश्वमूर्तिरिहाव्ययः ॥१४॥
14. vṛṇīṣva ca varaṁ vipra mattastvaṁ yamihecchasi ,
prasanno'haṁ tavādyeha viśvamūrtirihāvyayaḥ.

vṛṇīṣva ca varam vipra mattaḥ tvam yam iha icchasi
prasannaḥ aham tava adya iha viśvamūrtiḥ iha avyayaḥ

vipra tvam mattaḥ iha yam varam icchasi ca vṛṇīṣva
adya iha aham tava prasannaḥ viśvamūrtiḥ iha avyayaḥ
adya iha aham tava prasannaḥ viśvamūrtiḥ iha avyayaḥ
14.
O Brahmin (vipra), ask for the boon you desire from me here, for I, the imperishable universal form (viśvamūrti), am pleased with you here today.
नारद उवाच ।
अद्य मे तपसो देव यमस्य नियमस्य च ।
सद्यः फलमवाप्तं वै दृष्टो यद्भगवान्मया ॥१५॥

15. nārada uvāca ,
adya me tapaso deva yamasya niyamasya ca ,
sadyaḥ phalamavāptaṁ vai dṛṣṭo yadbhagavānmayā.

nārada uvāca adya me tapasaḥ deva yamasya niyamasya
ca sadyaḥ phalam avāptam vai dṛṣṭaḥ yat bhagavān mayā
ca sadyaḥ phalam avāptam vai dṛṣṭaḥ yat bhagavān mayā

nārada uvāca deva adya me tapasaḥ yamasya niyamasya
ca phalam sadyaḥ avāptam vai yat mayā bhagavān dṛṣṭaḥ

Nārada said: "O Lord, today I have immediately obtained the fruit of my spiritual austerities (tapas), as well as my self-control (yama) and spiritual disciplines (niyama), because the Lord (bhagavān) has been seen by me."
वर एष ममात्यन्तं दृष्टस्त्वं यत्सनातनः ।
भगवान्विश्वदृक्सिंहः सर्वमूर्तिर्महाप्रभुः ॥१६॥

16. vara eṣa mamātyantaṁ dṛṣṭastvaṁ yatsanātanaḥ ,
bhagavānviśvadṛksiṁhaḥ sarvamūrtirmahāprabhuḥ.
bhagavānviśvadṛksiṁhaḥ sarvamūrtirmahāprabhuḥ.
16.
varaḥ eṣaḥ mama atyantam dṛṣṭaḥ tvam yat sanātanaḥ
bhagavān viśvadṛk siṃhaḥ sarvamūrtiḥ mahāprabhuḥ
bhagavān viśvadṛk siṃhaḥ sarvamūrtiḥ mahāprabhuḥ
16.
eṣaḥ mama atyantam varaḥ yat tvam sanātanaḥ bhagavān
viśvadṛk siṃhaḥ sarvamūrtiḥ mahāprabhuḥ dṛṣṭaḥ
viśvadṛk siṃhaḥ sarvamūrtiḥ mahāprabhuḥ dṛṣṭaḥ
16.
This is my greatest boon, that you, the eternal Lord (bhagavān), the all-seeing lion, the embodiment of all forms, the great master, have been seen by me.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवं संदर्शयित्वा तु नारदं परमेष्ठिजम् ।
उवाच वचनं भूयो गच्छ नारद माचिरम् ॥१७॥

evaṁ saṁdarśayitvā tu nāradaṁ parameṣṭhijam ,
uvāca vacanaṁ bhūyo gaccha nārada māciram.

uvāca vacanaṁ bhūyo gaccha nārada māciram.

bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam saṃdarśayitvā tu nāradam
parameṣṭhijam uvāca vacanam bhūyaḥ gaccha nārada mā ciram
parameṣṭhijam uvāca vacanam bhūyaḥ gaccha nārada mā ciram

bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam tu parameṣṭhijam nāradam
saṃdarśayitvā bhūyaḥ vacanam uvāca nārada mā ciram gaccha

Bhīṣma said: Having thus revealed himself to Nārada, the son of Brahmā, he spoke these words again: 'Go, Nārada, do not delay.'
इमे ह्यनिन्द्रियाहारा मद्भक्ताश्चन्द्रवर्चसः ।
एकाग्राश्चिन्तयेयुर्मां नैषां विघ्नो भवेदिति ॥१८॥
एकाग्राश्चिन्तयेयुर्मां नैषां विघ्नो भवेदिति ॥१८॥
18. ime hyanindriyāhārā madbhaktāścandravarcasaḥ ,
ekāgrāścintayeyurmāṁ naiṣāṁ vighno bhavediti.

ime hi anindriyāhārāḥ madbhaktāḥ candravarcasaḥ
ekāgrāḥ cintayeyuḥ mām na eṣām vighnaḥ bhavet iti

18.
hi ime madbhaktāḥ anindriyāhārāḥ candravarcasaḥ
ekāgrāḥ mām cintayeyuḥ iti eṣām vighnaḥ na bhavet
ekāgrāḥ mām cintayeyuḥ iti eṣām vighnaḥ na bhavet
18.
These devotees (bhakta) of mine, whose sustenance is not from the senses, and who are as radiant as the moon, should meditate on me with single-pointed focus, so that no impediment (vighna) may befall them.
सिद्धाश्चैते महाभागाः पुरा ह्येकान्तिनोऽभवन् ।
तमोरजोविनिर्मुक्ता मां प्रवेक्ष्यन्त्यसंशयम् ॥१९॥
तमोरजोविनिर्मुक्ता मां प्रवेक्ष्यन्त्यसंशयम् ॥१९॥
19. siddhāścaite mahābhāgāḥ purā hyekāntino'bhavan ,
tamorajovinirmuktā māṁ pravekṣyantyasaṁśayam.
tamorajovinirmuktā māṁ pravekṣyantyasaṁśayam.

siddhāḥ ca ete mahābhāgāḥ purā hi ekāntinaḥ abhavan
tamas rajas vinirmuktāḥ mām pravekṣyanti asaṃśayam
tamas rajas vinirmuktāḥ mām pravekṣyanti asaṃśayam
19.
These perfected and illustrious beings were formerly exclusive devotees. Free from darkness (tamas) and passion (rajas), they will undoubtedly enter me.
न दृश्यश्चक्षुषा योऽसौ न स्पृश्यः स्पर्शनेन च ।
न घ्रेयश्चैव गन्धेन रसेन च विवर्जितः ॥२०॥
न घ्रेयश्चैव गन्धेन रसेन च विवर्जितः ॥२०॥
20. na dṛśyaścakṣuṣā yo'sau na spṛśyaḥ sparśanena ca ,
na ghreyaścaiva gandhena rasena ca vivarjitaḥ.

That which is not seen by the eye, nor touched by the sense of touch; it is not smelled by odor, and is devoid of taste.

The qualities (guṇas) of goodness (sattva), passion (rajas), and darkness (tamas) certainly do not cling to him. And he who is all-pervading and the witness is spoken of as the self (ātman) of the world.

अजो नित्यः शाश्वतश्च निर्गुणो निष्कलस्तथा ॥२२॥

He does not perish when the bodies of created beings perish. He is unborn, eternal, everlasting, without material qualities (nirguṇa), and indivisible.

He who is renowned as the twenty-fifth among the twenty-four principles, that supreme cosmic person (puruṣa) is said to be inactive and perceivable only through knowledge.

O best among the twice-born, having entered Him, people in this world indeed become liberated. He should be known as Vasudeva, the eternal Supreme Self (paramātman).

O Nārada, behold the greatness and majesty of the divine being, who is never affected by good or bad actions (karma).

The knower of the field (kṣetrajña) enjoys these material qualities, yet he is not consumed by them. Indeed, he is without qualities, the enjoyer of qualities, the creator of qualities, and superior to all qualities.

O divine sage, the earth, which is the very foundation of the cosmos, dissolves into water. The waters dissolve into light, and light dissolves into air.

मनो हि परमं भूतं तदव्यक्ते प्रलीयते ॥२९॥

Wind merges into space, and space, in turn, merges into the mind. The mind is indeed the supreme element (bhūta), and that then dissolves into the unmanifest (avyakta).

नास्ति तस्मात्परतरं पुरुषाद्वै सनातनात् ॥३०॥

O (brahman), the unmanifest (avyakta) completely dissolves into the inactive supreme cosmic person (puruṣa). Indeed, there is nothing higher or more transcendent than that eternal cosmic person.

ऋते तमेकं पुरुषं वासुदेवं सनातनम् ।
सर्वभूतात्मभूतो हि वासुदेवो महाबलः ॥३१॥

Indeed, in this world, nothing, whether stationary or moving, is eternal, except for that one everlasting supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), Vāsudeva. Vāsudeva, of great power, is verily the self (ātman) of all beings.

Earth, air, space, water, and light as the fifth - these great elements, when combined, are designated as the body.

O brahmana, he who then enters (the body), invisible and with subtle power - that lord, once born (into the body), begins to move the body.
न विना धातुसंघातं शरीरं भवति क्वचित् ।
न च जीवं विना ब्रह्मन्धातवश्चेष्टयन्त्युत ॥३४॥

34. na vinā dhātusaṁghātaṁ śarīraṁ bhavati kvacit ,

Never does a body exist without a combination of fundamental elements. And never, O brahmana, do the elements move without a living being (jīva).
स जीवः परिसंख्यातः शेषः संकर्षणः प्रभुः ।
तस्मात्सनत्कुमारत्वं यो लभेत स्वकर्मणा ॥३५॥

35. sa jīvaḥ parisaṁkhyātaḥ śeṣaḥ saṁkarṣaṇaḥ prabhuḥ ,

That individual soul (jīva) is known as Shesha, the Lord Sankarshana. It is from him that one attains the state of Sanatkumāra by one's own actions (karma).

स मनः सर्वभूतानां प्रद्युम्नः परिपठ्यते ॥३६॥

And in whom all beings (bhūtāni) attain dissolution (pralaya) at the time of cosmic destruction; that mind (manas) of all beings is declared to be Pradyumna.

यस्मात्सर्वं प्रभवति जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
सोऽनिरुद्धः स ईशानो व्यक्तिः सा सर्वकर्मसु ॥३७॥

37. tasmātprasūto yaḥ kartā kāryaṁ kāraṇameva ca ,
yasmātsarvaṁ prabhavati jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam ,
so'niruddhaḥ sa īśāno vyaktiḥ sā sarvakarmasu.

tasmāt yaḥ kartā kāryam kāraṇam eva

37.
From him is born the one who is the agent (kartā), and indeed both the effect and the cause (kāraṇa). From whom this entire world, both stationary and moving, arises. He is Aniruddha, He is Ishana, and He is that manifestation (vyakti) in all actions.
यो वासुदेवो भगवान्क्षेत्रज्ञो निर्गुणात्मकः ।
ज्ञेयः स एव भगवाञ्जीवः संकर्षणः प्रभुः ॥३८॥

saḥ eva jīvaḥ saṃkarṣaṇaḥ prabhuḥ bhagavān jñeyaḥ
38.
Who is Vasudeva, the Blessed Lord (Bhagavān), the knower of the field (kṣetrajña), whose nature is devoid of qualities. He indeed is to be known as the Blessed Lord (Bhagavān), the individual soul (jīva), Sankarshana, the Lord.
संकर्षणाच्च प्रद्युम्नो मनोभूतः स उच्यते ।
प्रद्युम्नाद्योऽनिरुद्धस्तु सोऽहंकारो महेश्वरः ॥३९॥

39. saṁkarṣaṇācca pradyumno manobhūtaḥ sa ucyate ,

saṃkarṣaṇāt ca pradyumnaḥ manobhūtaḥ saḥ ucyate.

saḥ ahaṃkāraḥ maheśvaraḥ.

From Saṃkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna is born; he is called 'born of the mind'. And from Pradyumna, Aniruddha is born; he is the ego (ahaṅkāra), the great lord.
मत्तः सर्वं संभवति जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
अक्षरं च क्षरं चैव सच्चासच्चैव नारद ॥४०॥

mattaḥ sarvam jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam,
akṣaram ca kṣaram ca eva,
sat ca asat ca eva saṃbhavati.

From me, O Nārada, everything arises: the entire world, both that which is immobile and that which is mobile, as well as the immutable and the mutable, and also existence and non-existence.
मां प्रविश्य भवन्तीह मुक्ता भक्तास्तु ये मम ।
अहं हि पुरुषो ज्ञेयो निष्क्रियः पञ्चविंशकः ॥४१॥

Indeed, those devotees of mine who enter me become liberated here. I am known as the inactive supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), the twenty-fifth principle.
निर्गुणो निष्कलश्चैव निर्द्वंद्वो निष्परिग्रहः ।
एतत्त्वया न विज्ञेयं रूपवानिति दृश्यते ।
इच्छन्मुहूर्तान्नश्येयमीशोऽहं जगतो गुरुः ॥४२॥

He is without qualities, without parts, without dualities, and without possessions. You should not understand this to mean 'He appears to have form'. If I wished, I could perish in a moment; I am the lord, the preceptor (guru) of the world.
माया ह्येषा मया सृष्टा यन्मां पश्यसि नारद ।
सर्वभूतगुणैर्युक्तं नैवं त्वं ज्ञातुमर्हसि ।
मयैतत्कथितं सम्यक्तव मूर्तिचतुष्टयम् ॥४३॥

This (māyā) indeed is an illusion (māyā) created by me, by which you perceive me, Nārada, endowed with the qualities of all beings. You are not able to truly know me in this manner. By me, your four forms have been properly explained (to you).
सिद्धा ह्येते महाभागा नरा ह्येकान्तिनोऽभवन् ।
तमोरजोभ्यां निर्मुक्ताः प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति च मां मुने ॥४४॥

44.
O sage (muni), these great-souled individuals who have become solely devoted (ekāntinaḥ) are perfected. Freed from the qualities of darkness (tamas) and passion (rajas), they will enter into me.
अहं कर्ता च कार्यं च कारणं चापि नारद ।
अहं हि जीवसंज्ञो वै मयि जीवः समाहितः ।
मैवं ते बुद्धिरत्राभूद्दृष्टो जीवो मयेति च ॥४५॥

I am indeed the doer, and the deed, and also the cause, O Nārada. I am, in truth, known as the individual soul (jīva); the individual soul (jīva) is established in me. May your understanding (buddhi) not form here, "The individual soul (jīva) has been seen by me."

O brahman, I am omnipresent, the inner self (ātman) of the multitude of beings. Even when the bodies of these multitudes of beings perish, I do not perish.

He is Hiraṇyagarbha, the origin of the worlds, the four-faced one, and the one proficient in etymology (nirukta). That eternal deity, Brahmā, ponders many purposes for my sake.

Behold the various kinds of austerities (tapas), observances, and moral restraints. Similarly, perceive the eight-fold divine power, all manifest and centralized.

O sage (muni), duties to ancestors are considered superior even to those owed to the gods. For I am, in truth, the one primordial father of both the gods and the ancestors.

पिबामि सुहुतं हव्यं कव्यं च श्रद्धयान्वितम् ॥५६॥

Having assumed the form of Hayashiras (the Horse-head), I drink the well-offered oblations for the gods and the offerings for ancestors, imbued with faith (śraddhā), in the northwestern ocean.

ततस्तस्मै वरान्प्रीतो ददावहमनुत्तमान् ॥५७॥

Brahma, who was created by me long ago, himself performed my Vedic ritual (yajña). Then, being pleased, I gave him unsurpassed boons.

अहंकारकृतं चैव नाम पर्यायवाचकम् ॥५८॥

58. matputratvaṁ ca kalpādau lokādhyakṣatvameva ca ,

And, at the beginning of a cosmic cycle (kalpa), [I granted him] the status of my son and indeed the position of overseer of the worlds. Also, a name that is a synonymous appellation, which is born from the ego (ahaṅkāra).

त्वं चैव वरदो ब्रह्मन्वरेप्सूनां भविष्यसि ॥५९॥

No one will ever transgress the limits established by you, O Brahmā. And you will indeed be the giver of boons to those who desire them.

विविधानां च भूतानां त्वमुपास्यो भविष्यसि ॥६०॥
पितॄणां च महाभाग सततं संशितव्रत ।

O one rich in asceticism (tapas), O greatly fortunate one, O one of firm resolve, you will constantly be revered by the hosts of gods and asuras, by the sages, by the ancestors, and by various other beings.

अनुशास्यस्त्वया ब्रह्मन्नियोज्यश्च सुतो यथा ॥६१॥

And I, who have come into manifestation, will always be instructed by you, O Brahmā, in the affairs of the gods, and be commanded just like a son.

After granting these and other beautiful boons to Brahmā, who possesses immeasurable splendor, I became pleased and reached the state of supreme tranquility.

The supreme cessation of all intrinsic natures (dharma) is considered liberation (nirvāṇa). Therefore, one who has attained this cessation should conduct themselves with complete tranquility.

कपिलं प्राहुराचार्याः सांख्यनिश्चितनिश्चयाः ॥६४॥

Teachers, whose conclusions are firmly established by (sāṅkhya) philosophy, declare me to be Kapila - eternal, dwelling in the sun, and endowed with the aid of knowledge.

This divine Hiranyagarbha is well-praised in the Vedic texts. O (brahman), I am that very one who is spoken of as the goal of (yoga) in the (yoga) scriptures.
एषोऽहं व्यक्तिमागम्य तिष्ठामि दिवि शाश्वतः ।
ततो युगसहस्रान्ते संहरिष्ये जगत्पुनः ।
कृत्वात्मस्थानि भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ॥६६॥

I, having taken on manifestation, reside eternally in the heavens. Then, at the end of a thousand ages (yuga), I will again withdraw the world, having placed all beings - both stationary and mobile - within myself.

Oh best among the twice-born (dvija), I will roam alone with knowledge; then again, with knowledge, I will create this entire universe here.

Our fourth form, which created the imperishable Śeṣa, is indeed called Saṅkarṣaṇa. He also generated Pradyumna.

From Pradyumna, I am Aniruddha; my creation occurs again and again. From Aniruddha, similarly, is Brahmā, who originated from the primeval lotus.

From Brahmā arise all beings, both moving and unmoving. Understand that this creation (sṛṣṭi) manifests repeatedly at the beginning of each cosmic cycle (kalpa).

नष्टौ पुनर्बलात्काल आनयत्यमितद्युतिः ।
तथा बलादहं पृथ्वीं सर्वभूतहिताय वै ॥७१॥

Just as the rising and setting of the sun, though they disappear from the sky here, are forcibly brought back by time, which possesses immeasurable splendor; similarly, I shall forcibly bring back the earth for the welfare of all beings.
सत्त्वैराक्रान्तसर्वाङ्गां नष्टां सागरमेखलाम् ।
आनयिष्यामि स्वं स्थानं वाराहं रूपमास्थितः ॥७२॥

Having assumed the form of a boar (varāha), I shall bring back to its own place the lost earth, whose entire body is overwhelmed by living beings and which has the ocean as its girdle.

नारसिंहं वपुः कृत्वा हिरण्यकशिपुं पुनः ।
सुरकार्ये हनिष्यामि यज्ञघ्नं दितिनन्दनम् ॥७३॥

I shall slay Hiraṇyākṣa, the Daitēya demon proud of his strength. Then, having assumed the form of Narasiṃha, I shall slay Hiraṇyakaśipu, the son of Diti who obstructs (Vedic rituals (yajña)), for the sake of the gods.

The mighty great demon Bali will be the son of Virocana. He will also depose Indra from his own kingdom.

When the three worlds (trailokya) are seized by him and the lord of Śacī (Indra) turns away, I will be born as the twelfth son of Aditi from Kaśyapa.

Then I will restore the kingdom to Indra, who possesses immeasurable splendor. I will establish the deities in their proper places, O Nārada, and I will make Bali dwell in the netherworld (pātāla).

In the Tretā Yuga, I will be Rāma, the upholder of the Bhṛgu clan. I will destroy the Kṣatriya class, along with their prosperous armies and vehicles.

Indeed, when the conjunction of the Tretā and Dvāpara Yugas is reached, I will become Rāma, the son of Daśaratha, the lord of the world.

प्राप्स्यतो वानरत्वं हि प्रजापतिसुतावृषी ॥७९॥

Indeed, the two sages, who are sons of Prajāpati, will attain monkey-form (vānarattva). This disfigurement (vairūpya) will arise due to the affliction caused by Trita, and similarly from Dvita.
तयोर्ये त्वन्वये जाता भविष्यन्ति वनौकसः ।
ते सहाया भविष्यन्ति सुरकार्ये मम द्विज ॥८०॥

O twice-born (dvija), those who will be born in the lineage of those two (sages) and become forest-dwellers (vanaukasa) will be my helpers in the mission of the gods.

Then, in battle, I shall kill Rāvaṇa, that terrible lord of rākṣasas, the disgracer of Pulastya's lineage, and a menace to the world, along with his retinue.

At the concluding juncture of the Dvāpara (Yuga) and the Kali (Yuga), a manifestation (prādurbhāva) on account of Kamsa will occur in Mathurā.

There, after killing very many demons who are enemies of the gods, I will make the city of Dvārakā, also known as Kuśasthalī, my dwelling place.

Residing there in that city, I will kill Naraka, also known as Bhauma (son of the earth goddess), who causes displeasure to Aditi, as well as the demons Mura and Pīṭha.

After killing the foremost demons, I will bring the beautiful city of Prāgjyotiṣa, which is endowed with various riches, to Kuśasthalī (Dvārakā).

I will defeat Śaṅkara, who is the well-wisher of his dear Bāṇa, and Mahāsena (Kārtikeya). Though both are engaged and revered by the divine realms, I will overcome them.

That Kālayavana, who is renowned and enveloped by the brilliance of Garga, his death will come from me alone, O best among the twice-born (dvijottama).

And the powerful Jarāsaṃdha, an adversary of all kings, will be a mighty demon (asura) and a ruler in Girivraja. His death will come about through the working of my intelligence (buddhi).

When all the kings on earth have gathered, Vāsavi (Arjuna) will indeed be my one great helper.

Thus, people will say that Nara and Nārāyaṇa, the two diligent sages and powerful lords, are consuming the warrior class for the sake of the world's work.

करिष्ये प्रलयं घोरमात्मज्ञातिविनाशनम् ॥९२॥

Having lightened the burden of the earth as desired, O best of men, I shall then bring about a terrible dissolution (pralaya) - the destruction of all the chief Sātvatas, of Dvārakā, and the annihilation of my own kinsmen.

Indeed, I, having assumed four forms and performed countless actions (karma), shall then go to my own worlds, which are honored by Brahmā.

O best of the twice-born (dvija), Haṃsa and Hayaśiras are indeed two manifestations. When the Vedic (śruti) was lost, it was then restored by me. Formerly, in the Kṛta Yuga, they were made complete with their Vedas and Śrutis.
अतिक्रान्ताः पुराणेषु श्रुतास्ते यदि वा क्वचित् ।
अतिक्रान्ताश्च बहवः प्रादुर्भावा ममोत्तमाः ।
लोककार्याणि कृत्वा च पुनः स्वां प्रकृतिं गताः ॥९५॥

Many supreme manifestations of mine have already transpired, whether you have heard of them in the Purāṇas or elsewhere. Having accomplished their cosmic tasks, they have returned to their own essential nature (prakṛti).

Indeed, not even by Brahmā has such a vision of me been attained, as has been attained by you today, here, with your intellect (buddhi) entirely focused.
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं ब्रह्मन्भक्तिमतो मया ।

Thus, that divine Lord (bhagavān), the immutable one (avyayaḥ) who assumed the universal form (viśvamūrtidhara), having spoken these words, disappeared right there.

The greatly effulgent Nārada, having obtained the desired grace, hurried to Badarāśrama to see Nara and Nārāyaṇa.

This great secret teaching (upaniṣad), which is in harmony with the four Vedas, was composed by him (Nārāyaṇa) according to sāṅkhya and yoga, and is also called Pañcarātra.

Nārada again recited, O dear one, in the abode of Brahmā, that which was chanted by Nārāyaṇa, exactly as he had seen and heard it.

किं ब्रह्मा न विजानीते यतः शुश्राव नारदात् ॥१०२॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said: This greatness of that wise one is indeed astonishing. Does Brahmā not know it, since he heard it from Nārada?

Indeed, the venerable grandfather (Brahmā) is directly descended from that deity. How could he not know the immense power of the one with immeasurable splendor?

Bhishma said: O king among kings, thousands upon hundreds of great cosmic cycles (mahākalpas), along with creations and dissolutions, have indeed passed.

At the beginning of creation, Brahmā, the lord and creator of beings, is remembered. O king, he knows that chief among deities, and furthermore, he knows the supreme self (paramātman), the ultimate controller, and his own origin.

To those other multitudes of perfected beings (siddhas) who had gathered in the assembly of Brahmā, he then recounted that Purana, which is considered equivalent to the Vedas.

Indeed, there were sixty-six thousand sages whose inner selves (ātman) were cultivated, who were created as forerunners by the Sun, who illumines the worlds. To all those cultivated souls, the Sun then proclaimed (it).

मेरौ समागता देवाः श्राविताश्चेदमुत्तमम् ॥१०९॥

By whichever gods or sages (muni) this ancient narrative (purāṇa) was heard, all of them worship the Supreme Self (paramātman) again and again.

This narrative (ākhyāna), originating from a sage (ṛṣi) and handed down by tradition, O king, should by no means be given by you to one who is not a devotee of Vāsudeva.

यानि श्रुतानि धर्म्याणि तेषां सारोऽयमुद्धृतः ॥११४॥

O King, just as the nectar was extracted by the gods and demons after churning, in the same way, this immortal narrative was drawn out here by the wise brahmins long ago.

And whoever constantly reads this, and whoever listens to this, that person, having attained a state of single-minded devotion, being perfectly composed in a solitary place...

The distressed person would be liberated (mokṣa) from illness after hearing this narrative from the beginning. A seeker obtains their desires, and a devotee (bhakta) attains the destination of devotion (bhakti).

He had constantly traveled from the sky to the Milk Ocean, which is the abode of nectar. After worshipping the lord of the gods there, he then returned to his own hermitage (āśrama).
