कर्णदुर्योधनादीनां शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ।
अपनीतं महत्तात तव चैव विशेषतः ॥१॥

apanītaṁ mahattāta tava caiva viśeṣataḥ.

1. Dhritarashtra said: O dear one, a great misdeed has been committed by Karna, Duryodhana, and others, and by Shakuni, the son of Subala, and especially by you.
यदाजानीत तां शक्तिमेकघ्नीं सततं रणे ।
अनिवार्यामसह्यां च देवैरपि सवासवैः ॥२॥
2. yadājānīta tāṁ śaktimekaghnīṁ satataṁ raṇe ,
anivāryāmasahyāṁ ca devairapi savāsavaiḥ.
2. yadā ajānīta tām śaktim ekaghnīm satatam raṇe
anivāryām asahām ca devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ
2. yadā saḥ (he - implied agent for ajānīta) tām ekaghnīm satatam raṇe anivāryām asahām ca devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ śaktim ajānīta.
2. When he realized that one-killing weapon (śakti), which was always present in battle, and which was irresistible and unbearable even for the gods, including Vasava (Indra).
सा किमर्थं न कर्णेन प्रवृत्ते समरे पुरा ।
न देवकीसुते मुक्ता फल्गुने वापि संजय ॥३॥
3. sā kimarthaṁ na karṇena pravṛtte samare purā ,
na devakīsute muktā phalgune vāpi saṁjaya.

3. O Sañjaya, why was that weapon not released by Karṇa previously, when the battle had begun, neither against the son of Devakī (Kṛṣṇa) nor against Arjuna?
संजय उवाच ।
संग्रामाद्विनिवृत्तानां सर्वेषां नो विशां पते ।
रात्रौ कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ मन्त्रोऽयं समजायत ॥४॥
4. saṁjaya uvāca ,
saṁgrāmādvinivṛttānāṁ sarveṣāṁ no viśāṁ pate ,
rātrau kurukulaśreṣṭha mantro'yaṁ samajāyata.
4. sañjaya uvāca saṅgrāmāt vinivṛttānām sarveṣām naḥ viśām
pate rātrau kurukula-śreṣṭha mantraḥ ayam samajāyata

4. Sañjaya said: 'O lord of men (viśām pate), O best among the Kuru family (kurukulaśreṣṭha), this plan (mantra) arose among all of us at night, after we had returned from the battle.'
प्रभातमात्रे श्वोभूते केशवायार्जुनाय वा ।
शक्तिरेषा विमोक्तव्या कर्ण कर्णेति नित्यशः ॥५॥
5. prabhātamātre śvobhūte keśavāyārjunāya vā ,
śaktireṣā vimoktavyā karṇa karṇeti nityaśaḥ.
5. prabhāta-mātre śvaḥ bhūte keśavāya arjunāya vā
śaktiḥ eṣā vimoktavyā karṇa karṇa iti nityaśaḥ
5. śvaḥ bhūte prabhāta-mātre eṣā śaktiḥ keśavāya

5. As soon as dawn breaks on the morrow, this weapon (śakti) must be discharged against Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) or Arjuna, with the constant exhortation, 'O Karṇa! O Karṇa!'
ततः प्रभातसमये राजन्कर्णस्य दैवतैः ।
अन्येषां चैव योधानां सा बुद्धिर्नश्यते पुनः ॥६॥
6. tataḥ prabhātasamaye rājankarṇasya daivataiḥ ,
anyeṣāṁ caiva yodhānāṁ sā buddhirnaśyate punaḥ.
6. tataḥ prabhāta-samaye rājan karṇasya daivataiḥ
anyeṣām ca eva yodhānām sā buddhiḥ naśyate punaḥ
6. rājan tataḥ prabhāta-samaye daivataiḥ karṇasya

6. Then, O King (rājan), at the time of dawn, that intention (buddhi) of Karṇa and of the other warriors was again destroyed by the deities.
दैवमेव परं मन्ये यत्कर्णो हस्तसंस्थया ।
न जघान रणे पार्थं कृष्णं वा देवकीसुतम् ॥७॥
7. daivameva paraṁ manye yatkarṇo hastasaṁsthayā ,
na jaghāna raṇe pārthaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ vā devakīsutam.
7. daivam eva param manye yat karṇaḥ hastasaṃsthayā
na jaghāna raṇe pārtham kṛṣṇam vā devakīsutam
7. manye daivam eva param,
yat karṇaḥ hastasaṃsthayā pārtham kṛṣṇam vā devakīsutam raṇe na jaghāna
7. I consider destiny (daivam) alone supreme, because Karṇa, despite the weapon being in his hand, did not kill Pārtha or Krishna, Devakī's son, in battle.
तस्य हस्तस्थिता शक्तिः कालरात्रिरिवोद्यता ।
दैवोपहतबुद्धित्वान्न तां कर्णो विमुक्तवान् ॥८॥
8. tasya hastasthitā śaktiḥ kālarātririvodyatā ,
daivopahatabuddhitvānna tāṁ karṇo vimuktavān.
8. tasya hastasthitā śaktiḥ kālarātriḥ iva udyatā
daivopahatabuddhitvāt na tām karṇaḥ vimuktavān
8. tasya hastasthitā kālarātriḥ iva udyatā śaktiḥ,
karṇaḥ daivopahatabuddhitvāt tām na vimuktavān
8. His weapon (śakti), which was held in his hand, ready like the night of destruction (kālarātri), Karṇa did not discharge, because his intellect (buddhi) was afflicted by destiny (daivam).
कृष्णे वा देवकीपुत्रे मोहितो देवमायया ।
पार्थे वा शक्रकल्पे वै वधार्थं वासवीं प्रभो ॥९॥
9. kṛṣṇe vā devakīputre mohito devamāyayā ,
pārthe vā śakrakalpe vai vadhārthaṁ vāsavīṁ prabho.
9. kṛṣṇe vā devakīputre mohitaḥ devamāyayā pārthe
vā śakrakalpe vai vadhārtham vāsavīm prabho
9. prabho devamāyayā mohitaḥ kṛṣṇe vā devakīputre
vā śakrakalpe pārthe vai vadhārtham vāsavīm
9. O lord, (Karṇa was) deluded by the divine illusion (māyā) regarding Krishna, Devakī's son, or Pārtha, who is like Indra, (and thus did not discharge) the Vasavī (śakti) for their destruction.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
दैवेनैव हता यूयं स्वबुद्ध्या केशवस्य च ।
गता हि वासवी हत्वा तृणभूतं घटोत्कचम् ॥१०॥
10. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
daivenaiva hatā yūyaṁ svabuddhyā keśavasya ca ,
gatā hi vāsavī hatvā tṛṇabhūtaṁ ghaṭotkacam.
10. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca daivena eva hatā yūyam svabuddhyā
keśavasya ca gatā hi vāsavī hatvā tṛṇabhūtam ghaṭotkacam
10. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca yūyam daivena eva svabuddhyā keśavasya
ca hatā hi vāsavī tṛṇabhūtam ghaṭotkacam hatvā gatā
10. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: You (Kauravas) were indeed undone by destiny (daivam), by your own poor judgment, and by Keśava's (Krishna's) intellect; for the Vasavī (śakti) has indeed departed, having killed Ghaṭotkaca who was rendered as insignificant as a blade of grass.
कर्णश्च मम पुत्राश्च सर्वे चान्ये च पार्थिवाः ।
अनेन दुष्प्रणीतेन गता वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥११॥
11. karṇaśca mama putrāśca sarve cānye ca pārthivāḥ ,
anena duṣpraṇītena gatā vaivasvatakṣayam.
11. karṇaḥ ca mama putrāḥ ca sarve ca anye ca
pārthivāḥ anena duṣpraṇītena gatāḥ vaivasvatakṣayam
11. mama putrāḥ ca karṇaḥ ca sarve ca anye ca pārthivāḥ

11. My sons, Karṇa, and all the other kings, due to this ill-conceived policy, have gone to the destruction brought by Yama (vaivasvatakṣayam).
भूय एव तु मे शंस यथा युद्धमवर्तत ।
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च हैडिम्बे निहते तदा ॥१२॥
12. bhūya eva tu me śaṁsa yathā yuddhamavartata ,
kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca haiḍimbe nihate tadā.
12. bhūyaḥ eva tu me śaṃsa yathā yuddham avartata
kurūṇām pāṇḍavānām ca haiḍimbe nihate tadā
12. tu me bhūyaḥ eva śaṃsa,
yathā yuddham avartata,
tadā haiḍimbe nihate kurūṇām ca pāṇḍavānām ca
12. But tell me again, how the battle (yuddham) unfolded between the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas, specifically at that time when Hīḍimba's son (Hāiḍimbe) was killed.
ये च तेऽभ्यद्रवन्द्रोणं व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ।
सृञ्जयाः सह पाञ्चालैस्तेऽप्यकुर्वन्कथं रणम् ॥१३॥
13. ye ca te'bhyadravandroṇaṁ vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
sṛñjayāḥ saha pāñcālaiste'pyakurvankathaṁ raṇam.
13. ye ca te abhyadravan droṇam vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
sṛñjayāḥ saha pāñcālaiḥ te api akurvan katham raṇam
13. ca ye te sṛñjayāḥ pāñcālaiḥ saha vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ droṇam abhyadravan,
te api raṇam katham akurvan
13. And those Sṛñjayas, along with the Pāñcālas, who, with their armies arrayed, attacked Droṇa as fierce warriors - how, then, did they wage battle (raṇam)?
सौमदत्तेर्वधाद्द्रोणमायस्तं सैन्धवस्य च ।
अमर्षाज्जीवितं त्यक्त्वा गाहमानं वरूथिनीम् ॥१४॥
14. saumadattervadhāddroṇamāyastaṁ saindhavasya ca ,
amarṣājjīvitaṁ tyaktvā gāhamānaṁ varūthinīm.
14. saumadatteḥ vadhāt droṇam āyastam saindhavasya
ca amarṣāt jīvitam tyaktvā gāhamānam varūthinīm
14. saumadatteḥ ca saindhavasya vadhāt amarṣāt jīvitam
tyaktvā varūthinīm gāhamānam āyastam droṇam
14. This verse describes Droṇa: exhausted due to the slaying of Saumadatti (Bhuriśravas) and Saṃdhava (Jayadratha), and, having abandoned his life (jīvitam) out of indignation (amarṣāt), he was plunging into the enemy ranks (varūthinīm).
जृम्भमाणमिव व्याघ्रं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ।
कथं प्रत्युद्ययुर्द्रोणमस्यन्तं पाण्डुसृञ्जयाः ॥१५॥
15. jṛmbhamāṇamiva vyāghraṁ vyāttānanamivāntakam ,
kathaṁ pratyudyayurdroṇamasyantaṁ pāṇḍusṛñjayāḥ.
15. jṛmbhamāṇam iva vyāghram vyāttānanam iva antakam
katham pratyudyayuḥ droṇam asyantam pāṇḍusṛñjayāḥ
15. pāṇḍusṛñjayāḥ jṛmbhamāṇam iva vyāghram vyāttānanam
iva antakam asyantam droṇam katham pratyudyayuḥ
15. How did the Pandavas and Srinjayas advance against Droṇa, who was discharging arrows, resembling a yawning tiger or Death himself with his mouth wide open?
आचार्यं ये च तेऽरक्षन्दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः ।
द्रौणिकर्णकृपास्तात तेऽप्यकुर्वन्किमाहवे ॥१६॥
16. ācāryaṁ ye ca te'rakṣanduryodhanapurogamāḥ ,
drauṇikarṇakṛpāstāta te'pyakurvankimāhave.
16. ācāryam ye ca te arakṣan duryodhanapurōgamāḥ
drauṇikarṇakṛpāḥ tāta te api akurvan kim āhave
16. tāta ye ca duryodhanapurōgamāḥ ācāryam arakṣan
te api drauṇikarṇakṛpāḥ āhave kim akurvan
16. O dear one, what did those others, led by Duryodhana, also do in battle - namely, Drauṇi, Karṇa, and Kṛpa - who were protecting the preceptor (Drona)?
भारद्वाजं जिघांसन्तौ सव्यसाचिवृकोदरौ ।
समार्छन्मामका युद्धे कथं संजय शंस मे ॥१७॥
17. bhāradvājaṁ jighāṁsantau savyasācivṛkodarau ,
samārchanmāmakā yuddhe kathaṁ saṁjaya śaṁsa me.
17. bhāradvājaṃ jighāṃsantau savyasācivṛkodarau
samārchan māmakāḥ yuddhe katham saṃjaya śaṃsa me
17. saṃjaya me śaṃsa bhāradvājaṃ jighāṃsantau

17. Sanjaya, tell me how my warriors (māmakāḥ) encountered Savyasācin (Arjuna) and Vṛkodara (Bhīma) in battle, as they were intent on slaying the son of Bharadvāja (Drona).
सिन्धुराजवधेनेमे घटोत्कचवधेन ते ।
अमर्षिताः सुसंक्रुद्धा रणं चक्रुः कथं निशि ॥१८॥
18. sindhurājavadheneme ghaṭotkacavadhena te ,
amarṣitāḥ susaṁkruddhā raṇaṁ cakruḥ kathaṁ niśi.
18. sindhurājavadhena ime ghaṭotkacavadhena te
amarṣitāḥ susaṃkruddhāḥ raṇaṃ cakruḥ katham niśi
18. sindhurājavadhena ime amarṣitāḥ ghaṭotkacavadhena
te susaṃkruddhāḥ niśi raṇam katham cakruḥ
18. How did these (my men), indignant over the slaying of the King of Sindhu (Jayadratha), and those (Pandavas), greatly enraged by the slaying of Ghaṭotkaca, fight at night?
संजय उवाच ।
हते घटोत्कचे राजन्कर्णेन निशि राक्षसे ।
प्रणदत्सु च हृष्टेषु तावकेषु युयुत्सुषु ॥१९॥
19. saṁjaya uvāca ,
hate ghaṭotkace rājankarṇena niśi rākṣase ,
praṇadatsu ca hṛṣṭeṣu tāvakeṣu yuyutsuṣu.
19. sañjaya uvāca | hate ghaṭotkace rājan karṇena niśi
rākṣase | praṇadatsu ca hṛṣṭeṣu tāvakeṣu yuyutsuṣu
19. rājan,
ghaṭotkace rākṣase karṇena niśi hate,
ca tāvakeṣu yuyutsuṣu hṛṣṭeṣu praṇadatsu
19. Sanjaya said: "O King, when Ghaṭotkaca, the Rākṣasa, was killed by Karṇa at night, and your warriors, eager for battle, were shouting with joy, and... (the sentence continues in the next verse)."
आपतत्सु च वेगेन वध्यमाने बलेऽपि च ।
विगाढायां रजन्यां च राजा दैन्यं परं गतः ॥२०॥
20. āpatatsu ca vegena vadhyamāne bale'pi ca ,
vigāḍhāyāṁ rajanyāṁ ca rājā dainyaṁ paraṁ gataḥ.
20. āpatatsu ca vegena vadhyamāne bale api ca |
vigāḍhāyām rajanyām ca rājā dainyaṃ paraṃ gataḥ
20. bale api vadhyamāne vegena āpatatsu ca,
rajanyām vigāḍhāyām ca,
rājā paraṃ dainyaṃ gataḥ.
20. ...and while (your) army, though being cut down, was attacking with speed, and as the night deepened, the King (Yudhiṣṭhira) fell into extreme misery.
अब्रवीच्च महाबाहुर्भीमसेनं परंतपः ।
आवारय महाबाहो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वाहिनीम् ।
हैडिम्बस्याभिघातेन मोहो मामाविशन्महान् ॥२१॥
21. abravīcca mahābāhurbhīmasenaṁ paraṁtapaḥ ,
āvāraya mahābāho dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm ,
haiḍimbasyābhighātena moho māmāviśanmahān.
21. abravīt ca mahābāhuḥ bhīmasenam
paraṃtapaḥ | āvāraya mahābāho
dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm | haiḍimbasya
abhighātena mohaḥ mām āviśat mahān
21. ca mahābāhuḥ paraṃtapaḥ bhīmasenam abravīt: "mahābāho,
dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm āvāraya! haiḍimbasya abhighātena mahān mohaḥ mām āviśat.
"
21. And the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa) spoke to Bhīmasena: "O mighty-armed one (mahābāhu), check the army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son! A great delusion (moha) has seized me due to the striking down of the son of Hiḍimbā (Haiḍimba)."
एवं भीमं समादिश्य स्वरथे समुपाविशत् ।
अश्रुपूर्णमुखो राजा निःश्वसंश्च पुनः पुनः ।
कश्मलं प्राविशद्घोरं दृष्ट्वा कर्णस्य विक्रमम् ॥२२॥
22. evaṁ bhīmaṁ samādiśya svarathe samupāviśat ,
aśrupūrṇamukho rājā niḥśvasaṁśca punaḥ punaḥ ,
kaśmalaṁ prāviśadghoraṁ dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam.
22. evam bhīmam samādiśya svarathe
samupāviśat | aśrupūrṇamukhaḥ rājā
niḥśvasan ca punaḥ punaḥ | kaśmalam
prāviśat ghoram dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam
22. evam bhīmam samādiśya,
aśrupūrṇamukhaḥ rājā punaḥ punaḥ niḥśvasan ca,
svarathe samupāviśat.
karṇasya vikramam dṛṣṭvā ghoram kaśmalam prāviśat.
22. Having thus instructed Bhīma, the King (Yudhiṣṭhira) sat down in his own chariot. With a face full of tears, and sighing again and again, the King entered into a terrible state of stupor, having seen Karṇa's valor.
तं तथा व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
मा व्यथां कुरु कौन्तेय नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ।
वैक्लव्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ यथा प्राकृतपूरुषे ॥२३॥
23. taṁ tathā vyathitaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇo vacanamabravīt ,
mā vyathāṁ kuru kaunteya naitattvayyupapadyate ,
vaiklavyaṁ bharataśreṣṭha yathā prākṛtapūruṣe.
23. tam tathā vyathitam dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇaḥ
vacanam abravīt mā vyathām kuru kaunteya
na etat tvayi upapadyate vaiklavyam
bharataśreṣṭha yathā prākṛtapūruṣe
23. kṛṣṇaḥ tam tathā vyathitam dṛṣṭvā
vacanam abravīt kaunteya mā vyathām kuru
etat tvayi na upapadyate bharataśreṣṭha
vaiklavyam yathā prākṛtapūruṣe
23. Seeing him thus distressed, Krishna spoke these words: "Do not be so distressed, O son of Kunti, for this is not fitting for you. Such faint-heartedness, O best among the Bharatas, is like that of an ordinary person (puruṣa)."
उत्तिष्ठ राजन्युध्यस्व वह गुर्वीं धुरं विभो ।
त्वयि वैक्लव्यमापन्ने संशयो विजये भवेत् ॥२४॥
24. uttiṣṭha rājanyudhyasva vaha gurvīṁ dhuraṁ vibho ,
tvayi vaiklavyamāpanne saṁśayo vijaye bhavet.
24. uttiṣṭha rājan yudhyasva vaha gurvīm dhuram vibho
tvayi vaiklavyam āpanne saṃśayaḥ vijaye bhavet
24. rājan vibho uttiṣṭha yudhyasva gurvīm dhuram vaha
tvayi vaiklavyam āpanne vijaye saṃśayaḥ bhavet
24. "Rise up, O King! Fight! Bear this heavy burden, O mighty one! If you fall into despondency, there will be doubt about victory."
श्रुत्वा कृष्णस्य वचनं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
विमृज्य नेत्रे पाणिभ्यां कृष्णं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. śrutvā kṛṣṇasya vacanaṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
vimṛjya netre pāṇibhyāṁ kṛṣṇaṁ vacanamabravīt.
25. śrutvā kṛṣṇasya vacanam dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
vimṛjya netre pāṇibhyām kṛṣṇam vacanam abravīt
25. dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛṣṇasya vacanam śrutvā
pāṇibhyām netre vimṛjya kṛṣṇam vacanam abravīt
25. Having heard Krishna's words, Yudhishthira, the King of (natural) law (dharma), wiped his eyes with his hands and spoke these words to Krishna.
विदिता ते महाबाहो धर्माणां परमा गतिः ।
ब्रह्महत्याफलं तस्य यः कृतं नावबुध्यते ॥२६॥
26. viditā te mahābāho dharmāṇāṁ paramā gatiḥ ,
brahmahatyāphalaṁ tasya yaḥ kṛtaṁ nāvabudhyate.
26. viditā te mahābāho dharmāṇām paramā gatiḥ
brahmahatyāphalam tasya yaḥ kṛtam na avabudhyate
26. mahābāho dharmāṇām paramā gatiḥ te viditā tasya
yaḥ kṛtam na avabudhyate brahmahatyāphalam
26. "O mighty-armed one, the ultimate path of (natural) laws (dharma) is known to you. The consequence of killing a brahmin (brahmahatyā) falls upon one who does not understand what has been done."
अस्माकं हि वनस्थानां हैडिम्बेन महात्मना ।
बालेनापि सता तेन कृतं साह्यं जनार्दन ॥२७॥
27. asmākaṁ hi vanasthānāṁ haiḍimbena mahātmanā ,
bālenāpi satā tena kṛtaṁ sāhyaṁ janārdana.
27. asmākam hi vanasthānām haiḍimbena mahātmanā
bālena api satā tena kṛtam sāhyam janārdana
27. janārdana hi asmākam vanasthānām tena mahātmanā
haiḍimbena bālena api satā sāhyam kṛtam
27. O Janārdana, indeed, great help was rendered to us, who were living in the forest, by that great-souled (mahātman) Haiḍimba, even though he was just a child.
अस्त्रहेतोर्गतं ज्ञात्वा पाण्डवं श्वेतवाहनम् ।
असौ कृष्ण महेष्वासः काम्यके मामुपस्थितः ।
उषितश्च सहास्माभिर्यावन्नासीद्धनंजयः ॥२८॥
28. astrahetorgataṁ jñātvā pāṇḍavaṁ śvetavāhanam ,
asau kṛṣṇa maheṣvāsaḥ kāmyake māmupasthitaḥ ,

28. O Kṛṣṇa, knowing that the Pāṇḍava Śvetavāhana (Arjuna) had gone to acquire weapons, that great archer (Arjuna) approached me in Kāmyaka. And he stayed with us until Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) returned.
गन्धमादनयात्रायां दुर्गेभ्यश्च स्म तारिताः ।
पाञ्चाली च परिश्रान्ता पृष्ठेनोढा महात्मना ॥२९॥
29. gandhamādanayātrāyāṁ durgebhyaśca sma tāritāḥ ,
pāñcālī ca pariśrāntā pṛṣṭhenoḍhā mahātmanā.

29. During the journey to Gandhamādana, we were indeed rescued from numerous difficulties. And the exhausted Pāñcālī (Draupadī) was carried on the back by the great-souled (mahātman) one (Bhīma).
आरम्भाच्चैव युद्धानां यदेष कृतवान्प्रभो ।
मदर्थं दुष्करं कर्म कृतं तेन महात्मना ॥३०॥
30. ārambhāccaiva yuddhānāṁ yadeṣa kṛtavānprabho ,
madarthaṁ duṣkaraṁ karma kṛtaṁ tena mahātmanā.
30. ārambhāt ca eva yuddhānām yat eṣa kṛtavān prabho
madartham duṣkaram karma kṛtam tena mahātmanā

30. O Lord, from the very beginning of battles, whatever arduous deed this great-souled (mahātman) one performed for my sake, was indeed accomplished by him.
स्वभावाद्या च मे प्रीतिः सहदेवे जनार्दन ।
सैव मे द्विगुणा प्रीती राक्षसेन्द्रे घटोत्कचे ॥३१॥
31. svabhāvādyā ca me prītiḥ sahadeve janārdana ,
saiva me dviguṇā prītī rākṣasendre ghaṭotkace.

31. O Janardana, the natural affection I have for Sahadeva, that same affection of mine is now doubled for Ghaṭotkaca, the king of the Rākṣasas.
भक्तश्च मे महाबाहुः प्रियोऽस्याहं प्रियश्च मे ।
येन विन्दामि वार्ष्णेय कश्मलं शोकतापितः ॥३२॥
32. bhaktaśca me mahābāhuḥ priyo'syāhaṁ priyaśca me ,
yena vindāmi vārṣṇeya kaśmalaṁ śokatāpitaḥ.
32. bhaktaḥ ca me mahābāhuḥ priyaḥ asya aham priyaḥ
ca me yena vindāmi vārṣṇeya kaśmalam śokatāpitaḥ
32. vārṣṇeya,
mahābāhuḥ ca me bhaktaḥ.

32. And that mighty-armed (Ghaṭotkaca) is devoted to me; I am dear to him, and he, in turn, is dear to me. O Vārṣṇeya, it is because of this (bond) that I, tormented by grief, now find myself in distress.
पश्य सैन्यानि वार्ष्णेय द्राव्यमाणानि कौरवैः ।
द्रोणकर्णौ च संयत्तौ पश्य युद्धे महारथौ ॥३३॥
33. paśya sainyāni vārṣṇeya drāvyamāṇāni kauravaiḥ ,
droṇakarṇau ca saṁyattau paśya yuddhe mahārathau.

33. O Vārṣṇeya, behold the armies being routed by the Kauravas! And behold Droṇa and Karṇa, those two great warriors (mahāratha), fully prepared in battle!
निशीथे पाण्डवं सैन्यमाभ्यां पश्य प्रमर्दितम् ।
गजाभ्यामिव मत्ताभ्यां यथा नडवनं महत् ॥३४॥
34. niśīthe pāṇḍavaṁ sainyamābhyāṁ paśya pramarditam ,
gajābhyāmiva mattābhyāṁ yathā naḍavanaṁ mahat.

34. Behold the Pāṇḍava army, crushed at midnight by these two (Droṇa and Karṇa), just as a great reed forest (naḍavana) is trampled by two maddened elephants.
अनादृत्य बलं बाह्वोर्भीमसेनस्य माधव ।
चित्रास्त्रतां च पार्थस्य विक्रमन्ते स्म कौरवाः ॥३५॥
35. anādṛtya balaṁ bāhvorbhīmasenasya mādhava ,
citrāstratāṁ ca pārthasya vikramante sma kauravāḥ.

35. O Mādhava (Krishna), the Kauravas were displaying their might, disregarding the strength of Bhīmasena's arms and Pārtha's (Arjuna's) wondrous skill with weapons.
एष द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च राजा चैव सुयोधनः ।
निहत्य राक्षसं युद्धे हृष्टा नर्दन्ति संयुगे ॥३६॥
36. eṣa droṇaśca karṇaśca rājā caiva suyodhanaḥ ,
nihatya rākṣasaṁ yuddhe hṛṣṭā nardanti saṁyuge.
36. eṣa droṇaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca rājā ca eva suyodhanaḥ
nihatya rākṣasam yuddhe hṛṣṭā nardanti saṃyuge

36. Here, Droṇa, Karṇa, and King Suyodhana, having killed the demon in battle, are joyfully roaring in this engagement.
कथमस्मासु जीवत्सु त्वयि चैव जनार्दन ।
हैडिम्बः प्राप्तवान्मृत्युं सूतपुत्रेण संगतः ॥३७॥
37. kathamasmāsu jīvatsu tvayi caiva janārdana ,
haiḍimbaḥ prāptavānmṛtyuṁ sūtaputreṇa saṁgataḥ.

37. O Janārdana (Krishna), how is it that Hiḍimbā's son (Ghaṭotkaca) met his death at the hands of Karṇa, the son of the charioteer, while we and you are still alive?
कदर्थीकृत्य नः सर्वान्पश्यतः सव्यसाचिनः ।
निहतो राक्षसः कृष्ण भैमसेनिर्महाबलः ॥३८॥
38. kadarthīkṛtya naḥ sarvānpaśyataḥ savyasācinaḥ ,
nihato rākṣasaḥ kṛṣṇa bhaimasenirmahābalaḥ.

38. O Krishna, how could the immensely powerful demon (Ghaṭotkaca), Bhīmasena's son, be killed, after he had humiliated all of us while Savyasācin (Arjuna) was watching?
यदाभिमन्युर्निहतो धार्तराष्ट्रैर्दुरात्मभिः ।
नासीत्तत्र रणे कृष्ण सव्यसाची महारथः ॥३९॥
39. yadābhimanyurnihato dhārtarāṣṭrairdurātmabhiḥ ,
nāsīttatra raṇe kṛṣṇa savyasācī mahārathaḥ.
39. yadā abhimanyuḥ nihataḥ dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ durātmabhiḥ
na āsīt tatra raṇe kṛṣṇa savyasācī mahārathaḥ

39. O Kṛṣṇa, when Abhimanyu was killed by the wicked sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Savyasācī, the great charioteer, was not present there in the battle.
निरुद्धाश्च वयं सर्वे सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना ।
निमित्तमभवद्द्रोणः सपुत्रस्तत्र कर्मणि ॥४०॥
40. niruddhāśca vayaṁ sarve saindhavena durātmanā ,
nimittamabhavaddroṇaḥ saputrastatra karmaṇi.
40. niruddhāḥ ca vayam sarve saindhavena durātmanā
nimittam abhavat droṇaḥ saputraḥ tatra karmaṇi
40. ca vayam sarve durātmanā saindhavena niruddhāḥ

40. And we all were held back by the wicked Jayadratha. Droṇa, with his son, became the instrument in that deed (karma).
उपदिष्टो वधोपायः कर्णस्य गुरुणा स्वयम् ।
व्यायच्छतश्च खड्गेन द्विधा खड्गं चकार ह ॥४१॥
41. upadiṣṭo vadhopāyaḥ karṇasya guruṇā svayam ,
vyāyacchataśca khaḍgena dvidhā khaḍgaṁ cakāra ha.
41. upadiṣṭaḥ vadhopāyaḥ karṇasya guruṇā svayam

41. The method for slaying Karṇa was personally taught by the teacher (guru). And while Karṇa was struggling, (Arjuna) indeed broke his (Karṇa's) sword into two with (Arjuna's) own sword.
व्यसने वर्तमानस्य कृतवर्मा नृशंसवत् ।
अश्वाञ्जघान सहसा तथोभौ पार्ष्णिसारथी ।
तथेतरे महेष्वासाः सौभद्रं युध्यपातयन् ॥४२॥
42. vyasane vartamānasya kṛtavarmā nṛśaṁsavat ,
aśvāñjaghāna sahasā tathobhau pārṣṇisārathī ,
tathetare maheṣvāsāḥ saubhadraṁ yudhyapātayan.

42. While he (Abhimanyu) was in distress, Kṛtavarmā cruelly and suddenly killed his horses, as well as both his charioteer-assistants. And in this manner, the other great archers struck down Subhadrā's son (Abhimanyu) in battle.
अल्पे च कारणे कृष्ण हतो गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
सैन्धवो यादवश्रेष्ठ तच्च नातिप्रियं मम ॥४३॥
43. alpe ca kāraṇe kṛṣṇa hato gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
saindhavo yādavaśreṣṭha tacca nātipriyaṁ mama.
43. alpe ca kāraṇe kṛṣṇa hataḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
saindhavaḥ yādavaśreṣṭha tat ca na atipriyaṃ mama

43. O Kṛṣṇa, best among the Yadus, Saindhava was killed by the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna) for a trivial reason. And that is certainly not at all pleasing to me.
यदि शत्रुवधे न्याय्यो भवेत्कर्तुं च पाण्डवैः ।
द्रोणकर्णौ रणे पूर्वं हन्तव्याविति मे मतिः ॥४४॥
44. yadi śatruvadhe nyāyyo bhavetkartuṁ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
droṇakarṇau raṇe pūrvaṁ hantavyāviti me matiḥ.
44. yadi śatruvadhe nyāyyaḥ bhavet kartuṃ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ
droṇakarṇau raṇe pūrvaṃ hantavyau iti me matiḥ

44. If it were indeed proper for the Pāṇḍavas to kill an enemy, then Droṇa and Karṇa should have been slain first in battle. This is my conviction.
एतौ मूलं हि दुःखानामस्माकं पुरुषर्षभ ।
एतौ रणे समासाद्य पराश्वस्तः सुयोधनः ॥४५॥
45. etau mūlaṁ hi duḥkhānāmasmākaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
etau raṇe samāsādya parāśvastaḥ suyodhanaḥ.
45. etau mūlaṃ hi duḥkhānām asmākaṃ puruṣarṣabha
etau raṇe samāsādya parāśvastaḥ suyodhanaḥ
45. puruṣarṣabha etau hi asmākaṃ duḥkhānām mūlaṃ

45. O best among men, these two (Droṇa and Karṇa) are certainly the root of our sufferings. Relying on these two in battle, Suyodhana (Duryodhana) feels completely reassured.
यत्र वध्यो भवेद्द्रोणः सूतपुत्रश्च सानुगः ।
तत्रावधीन्महाबाहुः सैन्धवं दूरवासिनम् ॥४६॥
46. yatra vadhyo bhaveddroṇaḥ sūtaputraśca sānugaḥ ,
tatrāvadhīnmahābāhuḥ saindhavaṁ dūravāsinam.
46. yatra vadhyaḥ bhavet droṇaḥ sūtaputraḥ ca sānugaḥ
tatra avadhīn mahābāhuḥ saindhavaṃ dūravāsinam

46. In a situation where Droṇa and the son of Sūta (Karṇa) along with his followers should have been killed, the mighty-armed one (Arjuna) instead slew Saindhava, who was far removed from them.
अवश्यं तु मया कार्यः सूतपुत्रस्य निग्रहः ।
ततो यास्याम्यहं वीर स्वयं कर्णजिघांसया ।
भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्द्रोणानीकेन संगतः ॥४७॥
47. avaśyaṁ tu mayā kāryaḥ sūtaputrasya nigrahaḥ ,
tato yāsyāmyahaṁ vīra svayaṁ karṇajighāṁsayā ,
bhīmaseno mahābāhurdroṇānīkena saṁgataḥ.
47. avaśyam tu mayā kāryaḥ sūtaputrasya
nigrahaḥ tataḥ yāsyāmi aham vīra
svayam karṇajighāṃsayā bhīmasenaḥ
mahābāhuḥ droṇānīkena saṃgataḥ

47. However, I must certainly undertake the capture of Sūtaputra (Karṇa). Therefore, O hero, I myself will go with the intent to kill Karṇa. The mighty-armed Bhīmasena is engaged with Droṇa's army.
एवमुक्त्वा ययौ तूर्णं त्वरमाणो युधिष्ठिरः ।
स विस्फार्य महच्चापं शङ्खं प्रध्माप्य भैरवम् ॥४८॥
48. evamuktvā yayau tūrṇaṁ tvaramāṇo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
sa visphārya mahaccāpaṁ śaṅkhaṁ pradhmāpya bhairavam.

48. Having spoken thus, Yudhiṣṭhira, hurrying, quickly departed. He then stretched his great bow and blew the terrifying conch.
ततो रथसहस्रेण गजानां च शतैस्त्रिभिः ।
वाजिभिः पञ्चसाहस्रैस्त्रिसाहस्रैः प्रभद्रकैः ।
वृतः शिखण्डी त्वरितो राजानं पृष्ठतोऽन्वयात् ॥४९॥
49. tato rathasahasreṇa gajānāṁ ca śataistribhiḥ ,
vājibhiḥ pañcasāhasraistrisāhasraiḥ prabhadrakaiḥ ,
vṛtaḥ śikhaṇḍī tvarito rājānaṁ pṛṣṭhato'nvayāt.
49. tataḥ rathasahastreṇa gajānām ca śataiḥ
tribhiḥ vājibhiḥ pañcasāhasraiḥ
trisāhasraiḥ prabhadrakaiḥ vṛtaḥ śikhaṇḍī
tvaritaḥ rājānam pṛṣṭhataḥ anvayāt
49. tataḥ śikhaṇḍī tvaritaḥ rathasahastreṇa
tribhiḥ śataiḥ ca gajānām pañcasāhasraiḥ
vājibhiḥ trisāhasraiḥ prabhadrakaiḥ
vṛtaḥ rājānam pṛṣṭhataḥ anvayāt
49. Then, surrounded by a thousand chariots, three hundred elephants, five thousand horses, and three thousand excellent war-elephants (prabhādrakaiḥ), Śikhaṇḍī, hastening, followed the king from behind.
ततो भेरीः समाजघ्नुः शङ्खान्दध्मुश्च दंशिताः ।
पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवाश्चैव युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ॥५०॥
50. tato bherīḥ samājaghnuḥ śaṅkhāndadhmuśca daṁśitāḥ ,
pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva yudhiṣṭhirapurogamāḥ.

50. Then, the armored Pañcālas and Pāṇḍavas, with Yudhiṣṭhira leading them, beat their kettle-drums and blew their conches.
ततोऽब्रवीन्महाबाहुर्वासुदेवो धनंजयम् ।
एष प्रयाति त्वरितो क्रोधाविष्टो युधिष्ठिरः ।
जिघांसुः सूतपुत्रस्य तस्योपेक्षा न युज्यते ॥५१॥
51. tato'bravīnmahābāhurvāsudevo dhanaṁjayam ,
eṣa prayāti tvarito krodhāviṣṭo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
jighāṁsuḥ sūtaputrasya tasyopekṣā na yujyate.

dhanaṃjayam eṣa prayāti tvaritaḥ
krodhāviṣṭaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ jighāṃsuḥ

51. Then, the mighty-armed Vāsudeva (Krishna) spoke to Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna): "Yudhiṣṭhira, enraged, is swiftly heading out, intent on killing the son of Sūta (Karṇa). It is not proper to ignore him."
एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशः शीघ्रमश्वानचोदयत् ।
दूरं च यातं राजानमन्वगच्छज्जनार्दनः ॥५२॥
52. evamuktvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ śīghramaśvānacodayat ,
dūraṁ ca yātaṁ rājānamanvagacchajjanārdanaḥ.

52. Having spoken thus, Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna) quickly urged on the horses. And Janārdana (Krishna) followed the king who had gone a long distance.
तं दृष्ट्वा सहसा यान्तं सूतपुत्रजिघांसया ।
शोकोपहतसंकल्पं दह्यमानमिवाग्निना ।
अभिगम्याब्रवीद्व्यासो धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥५३॥
53. taṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasā yāntaṁ sūtaputrajighāṁsayā ,
śokopahatasaṁkalpaṁ dahyamānamivāgninā ,
abhigamyābravīdvyāso dharmaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

sūtaputrajighāṃsayā śokopahatasaṃkalpam
dahyamānam iva agninā abhigamya abravīt
vyāsaḥ dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram
53. vyāsaḥ sūtaputrajighāṃsayā sahasā
yāntam śokopahatasaṃkalpam agninā
iva dahyamānam tam abhigamya
dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram abravīt
53. Having suddenly seen him (Yudhiṣṭhira) going forth with the intent to kill the son of Sūta (Karṇa), his resolve shattered by sorrow, as if he were being consumed by fire, Vyāsa approached and spoke to Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira).
कर्णमासाद्य संग्रामे दिष्ट्या जीवति फल्गुनः ।
सव्यसाचिवधाकाङ्क्षी शक्तिं रक्षितवान्हि सः ॥५४॥
54. karṇamāsādya saṁgrāme diṣṭyā jīvati phalgunaḥ ,
savyasācivadhākāṅkṣī śaktiṁ rakṣitavānhi saḥ.
54. karṇam āsādya saṃgrāme diṣṭyā jīvati phalgunaḥ
savyasācivadhākāṅkṣī śaktim rakṣitavān hi saḥ
54. diṣṭyā phalgunaḥ saṃgrāme karṇam āsādya jīvati
hi saḥ savyasācivadhākāṅkṣī śaktim rakṣitavān
54. Fortunately, Phalguna (Arjuna) lives, having encountered Karṇa in battle. For he (Karṇa), desiring the death of Savyasācī (Arjuna), had indeed preserved his divine spear (śakti).
न चागाद्द्वैरथं जिष्णुर्दिष्ट्या तं भरतर्षभ ।
सृजेतां स्पर्धिनावेतौ दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ॥५५॥
55. na cāgāddvairathaṁ jiṣṇurdiṣṭyā taṁ bharatarṣabha ,
sṛjetāṁ spardhināvetau divyānyastrāṇi sarvaśaḥ.
55. na ca agāt dvairatham jiṣṇuḥ diṣṭyā tam bharatarṣabha
sṛjetām spardhinau etau divyāni astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ
55. ca diṣṭyā bharatarṣabha jiṣṇuḥ tam dvairatham na agāt
etau spardhinau sarvaśaḥ divyāni astrāṇi sṛjetām
55. And fortunately, O best of Bharatas, the victorious Arjuna did not engage him (Karna) in a chariot duel. (For if they had,) these two rivals would unleash all their divine weapons everywhere.
वध्यमानेषु चास्त्रेषु पीडितः सूतनन्दनः ।
वासवीं समरे शक्तिं ध्रुवं मुञ्चेद्युधिष्ठिर ॥५६॥
56. vadhyamāneṣu cāstreṣu pīḍitaḥ sūtanandanaḥ ,
vāsavīṁ samare śaktiṁ dhruvaṁ muñcedyudhiṣṭhira.
56. vadhya-māṇeṣu ca astreṣu pīḍitaḥ sūtanandanaḥ
vāsavīm samare śaktim dhruvam muñcet yudhiṣṭhira
56. yudhiṣṭhira,
ca astreṣu vadhya-māṇeṣu pīḍitaḥ sūtanandanaḥ dhruvam vāsavīm śaktim samare muñcet
56. And when his weapons are being countered, the son of the charioteer (Karna), being tormented, would surely unleash the Vāsavī missile (śakti) in battle, O Yudhishthira.
ततो भवेत्ते व्यसनं घोरं भरतसत्तम ।
दिष्ट्या रक्षो हतं युद्धे सूतपुत्रेण मानद ॥५७॥
57. tato bhavette vyasanaṁ ghoraṁ bharatasattama ,
diṣṭyā rakṣo hataṁ yuddhe sūtaputreṇa mānada.
57. tataḥ bhavet te vyasanam ghoram bharatasattama
diṣṭyā rakṣaḥ hatam yuddhe sūtaputreṇa mānada
57. bharatasattama,
tataḥ te ghoram vyasanam bhavet mānada,
diṣṭyā rakṣaḥ sūtaputreṇa yuddhe hatam
57. Then there would be a terrible calamity for you, O best of Bharatas. Fortunately, the demon was killed in battle by the son of the charioteer, O giver of honor.
वासवीं कारणं कृत्वा कालेनापहतो ह्यसौ ।
तवैव कारणाद्रक्षो निहतं तात संयुगे ॥५८॥
58. vāsavīṁ kāraṇaṁ kṛtvā kālenāpahato hyasau ,
tavaiva kāraṇādrakṣo nihataṁ tāta saṁyuge.
58. vāsavīm kāraṇam kṛtvā kālena apahataḥ hi asau
tava eva kāraṇāt rakṣaḥ nihatam tāta saṃyuge
58. hi asau vāsavīm kāraṇam kṛtvā kālena apahataḥ tāta,
rakṣaḥ tava eva kāraṇāt saṃyuge nihatam
58. Indeed, making the Vāsavī (śakti) the instrument, he (Ghatotkacha) was carried off by Time. O dear one, that demon was killed in battle for your sake alone.
मा क्रुधो भरतश्रेष्ठ मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ।
प्राणिनामिह सर्वेषामेषा निष्ठा युधिष्ठिर ॥५९॥
59. mā krudho bharataśreṣṭha mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ,
prāṇināmiha sarveṣāmeṣā niṣṭhā yudhiṣṭhira.
59. mā krudhaḥ bharataśreṣṭha mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
prāṇinām iha sarveṣām eṣā niṣṭhā yudhiṣṭhira
59. bharataśreṣṭha yudhiṣṭhira mā krudhaḥ ca śoke
manaḥ mā kṛthāḥ iha sarveṣām prāṇinām eṣā niṣṭhā
59. O best among the Bharatas, do not be angry, nor let your mind be fixed on sorrow. O Yudhishthira, this is the ultimate end for all living beings in this world.
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैः पार्थिवैश्च महात्मभिः ।
कौरवान्समरे राजन्नभियुध्यस्व भारत ।
पञ्चमे दिवसे चैव पृथिवी ते भविष्यति ॥६०॥
60. bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ pārthivaiśca mahātmabhiḥ ,
kauravānsamare rājannabhiyudhyasva bhārata ,
pañcame divase caiva pṛthivī te bhaviṣyati.
60. bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ pārthivaiḥ
ca mahātmabhiḥ kauravān samare
rājan abhiyudhyasva bhārata pañcame
divase ca eva pṛthivī te bhaviṣyati
60. rājan bhārata sarvaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ ca
mahātmabhiḥ pārthivaiḥ sahitaḥ samare
kauravān abhiyudhyasva ca eva
pañcame divase te pṛthivī bhaviṣyati
60. O King, O descendant of Bharata, accompanied by all your brothers and the great-souled (mahātman) kings, fight against the Kauravas in battle. And on the fifth day, the earth will be yours.
नित्यं च पुरुषव्याघ्र धर्ममेव विचिन्तय ।
आनृशंस्यं तपो दानं क्षमां सत्यं च पाण्डव ॥६१॥
61. nityaṁ ca puruṣavyāghra dharmameva vicintaya ,
ānṛśaṁsyaṁ tapo dānaṁ kṣamāṁ satyaṁ ca pāṇḍava.
61. nityam ca puruṣavyāghra dharmam eva vicintaya
ānṛśaṃsyam tapaḥ dānam kṣamām satyam ca pāṇḍava
61. puruṣavyāghra pāṇḍava nityam ca dharmam eva
vicintaya ānṛśaṃsyam tapaḥ dānam kṣamām ca satyam
61. And O tiger among men, O Pandava, always contemplate only your natural law (dharma), and (cultivate) compassion, austerity (tapas), charity (dāna), forgiveness, and truth.
सेवेथाः परमप्रीतो यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ।
इत्युक्त्वा पाण्डवं व्यासस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥६२॥
62. sevethāḥ paramaprīto yato dharmastato jayaḥ ,
ityuktvā pāṇḍavaṁ vyāsastatraivāntaradhīyata.
62. sevethāḥ paramaprītaḥ yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
iti uktvā pāṇḍavam vyāsaḥ tatra eva antaradhīyata
62. paramaprītaḥ sevethāḥ yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
iti pāṇḍavam uktvā vyāsaḥ tatra eva antaradhīyata
62. You should cultivate these (qualities) with supreme delight, for where there is natural law (dharma), there is victory. Having said this to the Pandava, Vyasa disappeared right there.
