वैशंपायन उवाच ।
शूरो नाम यदुश्रेष्ठो वसुदेवपिताभवत् ।
तस्य कन्या पृथा नाम रूपेणासदृशी भुवि ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śūro nāma yaduśreṣṭho vasudevapitābhavat ,
tasya kanyā pṛthā nāma rūpeṇāsadṛśī bhuvi.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: There was a prominent Yadu named Śūra, who was the father of Vasudeva. His daughter, named Pṛthā, was unmatched in beauty on earth.
पैतृष्वसेयाय स तामनपत्याय वीर्यवान् ।
अग्र्यमग्रे प्रतिज्ञाय स्वस्यापत्यस्य वीर्यवान् ॥२॥
2. paitṛṣvaseyāya sa tāmanapatyāya vīryavān ,
agryamagre pratijñāya svasyāpatyasya vīryavān.

agryam agre pratijñāya svasya apatyasya vīryavān
2. That powerful one (Śūra), having initially promised the foremost of his own offspring to his childless paternal aunt's son (Kuntibhoja)...
अग्रजातेति तां कन्यामग्र्यानुग्रहकाङ्क्षिणे ।
प्रददौ कुन्तिभोजाय सखा सख्ये महात्मने ॥३॥
3. agrajāteti tāṁ kanyāmagryānugrahakāṅkṣiṇe ,
pradadau kuntibhojāya sakhā sakhye mahātmane.
3. agra-jātā iti tām kanyām agrya-anugraha-kāṅkṣiṇe
pradadau kuntibhojāya sakhā sakhye mahātmane
3. As the firstborn, a friend gave that girl to his noble-minded friend Kuntibhoja, who desired an excellent boon.
सा नियुक्ता पितुर्गेहे देवतातिथिपूजने ।
उग्रं पर्यचरद्घोरं ब्राह्मणं संशितव्रतम् ॥४॥
4. sā niyuktā piturgehe devatātithipūjane ,
ugraṁ paryacaradghoraṁ brāhmaṇaṁ saṁśitavratam.
4. sā niyuktā pituḥ gehe devatā-atithi-pūjane ugram
pari-acarat ghoram brāhmaṇam saṃśita-vratam
4. Appointed in her father's house for the worship of gods and guests, she served a severe, dreadful Brahmin (brāhmaṇa) who had undertaken strict vows.
निगूढनिश्चयं धर्मे यं तं दुर्वाससं विदुः ।
तमुग्रं संशितात्मानं सर्वयत्नैरतोषयत् ॥५॥
5. nigūḍhaniścayaṁ dharme yaṁ taṁ durvāsasaṁ viduḥ ,
tamugraṁ saṁśitātmānaṁ sarvayatnairatoṣayat.
5. nigūḍha-niścayam dharme yam tam durvāsasam viduḥ
tam ugram saṃśita-ātmānam sarva-yatnaiḥ atoṣayat
5. Whom people knew as Durvasas, whose resolve concerning his intrinsic nature (dharma) was hidden, that severe one, whose self (ātman) was disciplined, she satisfied with all her efforts.
तस्यै स प्रददौ मन्त्रमापद्धर्मान्ववेक्षया ।
अभिचाराभिसंयुक्तमब्रवीच्चैव तां मुनिः ॥६॥
6. tasyai sa pradadau mantramāpaddharmānvavekṣayā ,
abhicārābhisaṁyuktamabravīccaiva tāṁ muniḥ.
6. tasyai saḥ pradadau mantram āpaddharmānvavekṣayā
abhicārābhisamyuktam abravīt ca eva tām muniḥ
6. Considering the specific custom (dharma) applicable in times of distress, that sage gave her a sacred incantation (mantra) endowed with the power of invoking deities, and he indeed spoke to her about its purpose.
यं यं देवं त्वमेतेन मन्त्रेणावाहयिष्यसि ।
तस्य तस्य प्रसादेन पुत्रस्तव भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. yaṁ yaṁ devaṁ tvametena mantreṇāvāhayiṣyasi ,
tasya tasya prasādena putrastava bhaviṣyati.
7. yam yam devam tvam etena mantreṇa āvāhayiṣyasi
tasya tasya prasādena putraḥ tava bhaviṣyati
7. Whichever deity you invoke with this sacred incantation (mantra), through the grace of that very deity, a son will be born to you.
तथोक्ता सा तु विप्रेण तेन कौतूहलात्तदा ।
कन्या सती देवमर्कमाजुहाव यशस्विनी ॥८॥
8. tathoktā sā tu vipreṇa tena kautūhalāttadā ,
kanyā satī devamarkamājuhāva yaśasvinī.
8. tathā uktā sā tu vipreṇa tena kautūhalāt tadā
kanyā satī devam arkam ājuhāva yaśasvinī
8. Thus addressed by that Brahmin, the renowned maiden, who was still a virgin, then invoked the Sun god (Arka) out of curiosity.
सा ददर्श तमायान्तं भास्करं लोकभावनम् ।
विस्मिता चानवद्याङ्गी दृष्ट्वा तन्महदद्भुतम् ॥९॥
9. sā dadarśa tamāyāntaṁ bhāskaraṁ lokabhāvanam ,
vismitā cānavadyāṅgī dṛṣṭvā tanmahadadbhutam.
9. sā dadarśa tam āyāntam bhāskaram lokabhāvanam
vismitā ca anavadyāṅgī dṛṣṭvā tat mahat adbhutam
9. She, with her faultless limbs, saw the Sun, the sustainer of the world, approaching. Having witnessed that great marvel, she was astonished.
प्रकाशकर्मा तपनस्तस्यां गर्भं दधौ ततः ।
अजीजनत्ततो वीरं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
आमुक्तकवचः श्रीमान्देवगर्भः श्रियावृतः ॥१०॥
10. prakāśakarmā tapanastasyāṁ garbhaṁ dadhau tataḥ ,
ajījanattato vīraṁ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
āmuktakavacaḥ śrīmāndevagarbhaḥ śriyāvṛtaḥ.
10. prakāśakarmā tapanaḥ tasyām garbham
dadhau tataḥ ajījanat tataḥ vīram
sarvaśastrabhṛtām varam āmuktakavacaḥ
śrīmān devagarbhaḥ śriyā āvṛtaḥ
10. Then the radiant Sun (tapan), who performs luminous deeds, placed an embryo in her. Thereupon, he begot a hero, the foremost among all weapon-bearers. This glorious, divine offspring was born with inherent armor and enveloped in splendor.
सहजं कवचं बिभ्रत्कुण्डलोद्द्योतिताननः ।
अजायत सुतः कर्णः सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतः ॥११॥
11. sahajaṁ kavacaṁ bibhratkuṇḍaloddyotitānanaḥ ,
ajāyata sutaḥ karṇaḥ sarvalokeṣu viśrutaḥ.
11. sahajam kavacam bibhrat kuṇḍaloddyotitānanaḥ
ajāyata sutaḥ karṇaḥ sarvalokeṣu viśrutaḥ
11. Bearing a natural armor and with his face illuminated by radiant earrings, a son named Karṇa was born, renowned throughout all the worlds.
प्रादाच्च तस्याः कन्यात्वं पुनः स परमद्युतिः ।
दत्त्वा च ददतां श्रेष्ठो दिवमाचक्रमे ततः ॥१२॥
12. prādācca tasyāḥ kanyātvaṁ punaḥ sa paramadyutiḥ ,
dattvā ca dadatāṁ śreṣṭho divamācakrame tataḥ.
12. prādāt ca tasyāḥ kanyātvaṃ punaḥ saḥ paramadyutiḥ
dattvā ca dadatām śreṣṭhaḥ divam ācakrame tataḥ
12. And that immensely radiant one (the sun god) restored her maidenhood again. Having thus given, and being the best among givers, he then ascended to heaven.
गूहमानापचारं तं बन्धुपक्षभयात्तदा ।
उत्ससर्ज जले कुन्ती तं कुमारं सलक्षणम् ॥१३॥
13. gūhamānāpacāraṁ taṁ bandhupakṣabhayāttadā ,
utsasarja jale kuntī taṁ kumāraṁ salakṣaṇam.
13. gūhamānā apacāram tam bandhupakṣabhayāt tadā
utsasarja jale kuntī tam kumāram salakṣaṇam
13. Then, out of fear of her family, Kunti, concealing that misdeed, abandoned that infant, who possessed auspicious marks, in the water.
तमुत्सृष्टं तदा गर्भं राधाभर्ता महायशाः ।
पुत्रत्वे कल्पयामास सभार्यः सूतनन्दनः ॥१४॥
14. tamutsṛṣṭaṁ tadā garbhaṁ rādhābhartā mahāyaśāḥ ,
putratve kalpayāmāsa sabhāryaḥ sūtanandanaḥ.
14. tam utsṛṣṭam tadā garbham rādhābhartā mahāyaśāḥ
putratve kalpayāmāsa sabhāryaḥ sūtanandanaḥ
14. Then, Radha's husband, the highly renowned charioteer, along with his wife, adopted that abandoned infant as their son.
नामधेयं च चक्राते तस्य बालस्य तावुभौ ।
वसुना सह जातोऽयं वसुषेणो भवत्विति ॥१५॥
15. nāmadheyaṁ ca cakrāte tasya bālasya tāvubhau ,
vasunā saha jāto'yaṁ vasuṣeṇo bhavatviti.
15. nāmadheyam ca cakrāte tasya bālasya tau ubhau
vasunā saha jātaḥ ayam vasuṣeṇaḥ bhavatu iti
15. And those two gave a name to that child, saying, 'Since he was born with wealth (vasu), let him be Vasuṣeṇa.'
स वर्धमानो बलवान्सर्वास्त्रेषूद्यतोऽभवत् ।
आ पृष्ठतापादादित्यमुपतस्थे स वीर्यवान् ॥१६॥
16. sa vardhamāno balavānsarvāstreṣūdyato'bhavat ,
ā pṛṣṭhatāpādādityamupatasthe sa vīryavān.
16. saḥ vardhamānaḥ balavān sarvāstreṣu udyataḥ abhavat
ā pṛṣṭhatāpāt ādityam upatasthe saḥ vīryavān
16. As he grew up, that powerful one became skilled in all weapons. That valorous one worshipped the Sun (āditya) by heating his back (facing the sun).
यस्मिन्काले जपन्नास्ते स वीरः सत्यसंगरः ।
नादेयं ब्राह्मणेष्वासीत्तस्मिन्काले महात्मनः ॥१७॥
17. yasminkāle japannāste sa vīraḥ satyasaṁgaraḥ ,
nādeyaṁ brāhmaṇeṣvāsīttasminkāle mahātmanaḥ.
17. yasmin kāle japan āste saḥ vīraḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ
na ādeyam brāhmaṇeṣu āsīt tasmin kāle mahātmanaḥ
17. When that hero, true to his word, sat chanting at that time, nothing was ever denied to the Brahmins by that great-souled one (mahātman).
तमिन्द्रो ब्राह्मणो भूत्वा भिक्षार्थं भूतभावनः ।
कुण्डले प्रार्थयामास कवचं च महाद्युतिः ॥१८॥
18. tamindro brāhmaṇo bhūtvā bhikṣārthaṁ bhūtabhāvanaḥ ,
kuṇḍale prārthayāmāsa kavacaṁ ca mahādyutiḥ.
18. tam indraḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhūtvā bhikṣārtham bhūtabhāvanaḥ
kuṇḍale prārthayāmāsa kavacam ca mahādyutiḥ
18. The greatly radiant (mahādyutiḥ) Indra, the creator of beings (bhūtabhāvanaḥ), having assumed the form of a brahmin, requested his (Karna's) two earrings and his armor for the sake of alms.
उत्कृत्य विमनाः स्वाङ्गात्कवचं रुधिरस्रवम् ।
कर्णस्तु कुण्डले छित्त्वा प्रायच्छत्स कृताञ्जलिः ॥१९॥
19. utkṛtya vimanāḥ svāṅgātkavacaṁ rudhirasravam ,
karṇastu kuṇḍale chittvā prāyacchatsa kṛtāñjaliḥ.
19. utkṛtya vimanāḥ svāṅgāt kavacam rudhirasravam
karṇaḥ tu kuṇḍale chittvā prāyacchat saḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
19. But Karna, disheartened, having cut out his armor, which was dripping with blood, from his own body, and having cut off his two earrings, he reverently (kṛtāñjaliḥ) handed them over.
शक्तिं तस्मै ददौ शक्रः विस्मितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
देवासुरमनुष्याणां गन्धर्वोरगरक्षसाम् ।
यस्मै क्षेप्स्यसि रुष्टः सन्सोऽनया न भविष्यति ॥२०॥
20. śaktiṁ tasmai dadau śakraḥ vismito vākyamabravīt ,
devāsuramanuṣyāṇāṁ gandharvoragarakṣasām ,
yasmai kṣepsyasi ruṣṭaḥ sanso'nayā na bhaviṣyati.
20. śaktim tasmai dadau śakraḥ vismitaḥ
vākyam abravīt devāsuramanuṣyāṇām
gandharvoragarakṣasām yasmai kṣepsyasi
ruṣṭaḥ san saḥ anayā na bhaviṣyati
20. Indra (Śakra), astonished, gave him (Karna) the "śakti" weapon and spoke (vākyam abravīt) these words: 'Among gods, asuras, and humans (manuṣyāṇām), as well as gandharvas, serpent-beings (uragas), and rākṣasas – whoever you cast this (weapon) at when you are enraged, that one will certainly not exist (bhaviṣyati) due to it.'
पुरा नाम तु तस्यासीद्वसुषेण इति श्रुतम् ।
ततो वैकर्तनः कर्णः कर्मणा तेन सोऽभवत् ॥२१॥
21. purā nāma tu tasyāsīdvasuṣeṇa iti śrutam ,
tato vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ karmaṇā tena so'bhavat.
21. purā nāma tu tasya āsīt vasuṣeṇa iti śrutam
tataḥ vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ karmaṇā tena saḥ abhavat
21. Previously, his well-known name was Vasuṣeṇa. Subsequently, through that action (karma), he became Karṇa, the son of the Sun god (Vaikartana).
