युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
नात्मानमनुशोचामि नेमान्भ्रातॄन्महामुने ।
हरणं चापि राज्यस्य यथेमां द्रुपदात्मजाम् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
nātmānamanuśocāmi nemānbhrātṝnmahāmune ,
haraṇaṁ cāpi rājyasya yathemāṁ drupadātmajām.

mahāmune haraṇam ca api rājyasya yathā imām druapadātmajām
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O great sage, I do not grieve for myself (ātman), nor for these brothers, nor even for the loss of the kingdom, as much as I grieve for this daughter of Drupada.
द्यूते दुरात्मभिः क्लिष्टाः कृष्णया तारिता वयम् ।
जयद्रथेन च पुनर्वनादपहृता बलात् ॥२॥
2. dyūte durātmabhiḥ kliṣṭāḥ kṛṣṇayā tāritā vayam ,
jayadrathena ca punarvanādapahṛtā balāt.
2. dyūte durātmabhiḥ kliṣṭāḥ kṛṣṇayā tāritāḥ
vayam jayadrathena ca punar vanāt apahṛtā balāt
2. We were tormented by the wicked ones in the gambling match, and we were saved by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); but she was again forcibly abducted from the forest by Jayadratha.
अस्ति सीमन्तिनी काचिद्दृष्टपूर्वाथ वा श्रुता ।
पतिव्रता महाभागा यथेयं द्रुपदात्मजा ॥३॥
3. asti sīmantinī kāciddṛṣṭapūrvātha vā śrutā ,
pativratā mahābhāgā yatheyaṁ drupadātmajā.
3. asti sīmantinī kācit dṛṣṭapūrvā atha vā śrutā
pativratā mahābhāgā yathā iyaṃ drupādātmajā
3. Is there any woman, whether seen before or merely heard of, who is as devoted to her husband and as greatly fortunate as this daughter of Drupada?
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्कुलस्त्रीणां महाभाग्यं युधिष्ठिर ।
सर्वमेतद्यथा प्राप्तं सावित्र्या राजकन्यया ॥४॥
4. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājankulastrīṇāṁ mahābhāgyaṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
sarvametadyathā prāptaṁ sāvitryā rājakanyayā.

yudhiṣṭhira sarvam etat yathā prāptam sāvitryā rājakanyayā
4. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'O King Yudhiṣṭhira, listen to the great fortune of noble women and how all this was obtained by the princess Sāvitrī.'
आसीन्मद्रेषु धर्मात्मा राजा परमधार्मिकः ।
ब्रह्मण्यश्च शरण्यश्च सत्यसंधो जितेन्द्रियः ॥५॥
5. āsīnmadreṣu dharmātmā rājā paramadhārmikaḥ ,
brahmaṇyaśca śaraṇyaśca satyasaṁdho jitendriyaḥ.
5. āsīt madreṣu dharmātmā rājā paramadhārmikaḥ
brahmaṇyaḥ ca śaraṇyaḥ ca satyasaṃdhaḥ jitendriyaḥ
5. In the Madra country, there was a king, a righteous soul (dharma), supremely pious. He was benevolent to Brahmins, a refuge (for all), truthful in his promises, and had conquered his senses.
यज्वा दानपतिर्दक्षः पौरजानपदप्रियः ।
पार्थिवोऽश्वपतिर्नाम सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥६॥
6. yajvā dānapatirdakṣaḥ paurajānapadapriyaḥ ,
pārthivo'śvapatirnāma sarvabhūtahite rataḥ.
6. yajvā dānapatiḥ dakṣaḥ paura-jānapada-priyaḥ
pārthivaḥ aśvapatiḥ nāma sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ
6. saḥ yajvā dānapatiḥ dakṣaḥ paura-jānapada-priyaḥ
pārthivaḥ aśvapatiḥ nāma sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ
6. He was a performer of Vedic rituals (yajvā), a lord of gifts (dānapati), skillful, and beloved by both citizens and country dwellers. This king, named Aśvapati, was devoted to the welfare of all beings.
क्षमावाननपत्यश्च सत्यवाग्विजितेन्द्रियः ।
अतिक्रान्तेन वयसा संतापमुपजग्मिवान् ॥७॥
7. kṣamāvānanapatyaśca satyavāgvijitendriyaḥ ,
atikrāntena vayasā saṁtāpamupajagmivān.
7. kṣamāvān anapatyaḥ ca satyavāk vijitendriyaḥ
atikrāntena vayasā saṃtāpam upajagmivān
7. He was forgiving, childless, truthful, and had mastered his senses. As his age advanced, he experienced great distress.
अपत्योत्पादनार्थं स तीव्रं नियममास्थितः ।
काले परिमिताहारो ब्रह्मचारी जितेन्द्रियः ॥८॥
8. apatyotpādanārthaṁ sa tīvraṁ niyamamāsthitaḥ ,
kāle parimitāhāro brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ.
8. apatyotpādanārtham saḥ tīvram niyamam āsthitaḥ
kāle parimitāhāraḥ brahmacārī jitendriyaḥ
8. For the purpose of begetting offspring, he undertook a severe discipline (niyama), becoming one who ate sparingly at proper times, practiced celibacy (brahmacārī), and controlled his senses.
हुत्वा शतसहस्रं स सावित्र्या राजसत्तम ।
षष्ठे षष्ठे तदा काले बभूव मितभोजनः ॥९॥
9. hutvā śatasahasraṁ sa sāvitryā rājasattama ,
ṣaṣṭhe ṣaṣṭhe tadā kāle babhūva mitabhojanaḥ.
9. hutvā śatasahasram saḥ sāvitryā rājasattama
ṣaṣṭhe ṣaṣṭhe tadā kāle babhūva mitabhojanaḥ
9. O best of kings (rājasattama), having offered a hundred thousand oblations by means of the Sāvitrī (mantra), he then became one who ate sparingly every six days.
एतेन नियमेनासीद्वर्षाण्यष्टादशैव तु ।
पूर्णे त्वष्टादशे वर्षे सावित्री तुष्टिमभ्यगात् ।
स्वरूपिणी तदा राजन्दर्शयामास तं नृपम् ॥१०॥
10. etena niyamenāsīdvarṣāṇyaṣṭādaśaiva tu ,
pūrṇe tvaṣṭādaśe varṣe sāvitrī tuṣṭimabhyagāt ,
svarūpiṇī tadā rājandarśayāmāsa taṁ nṛpam.
10. etena niyamena āsīt varṣāṇi aṣṭādaśa
eva tu pūrṇe tu aṣṭādaśe varṣe
sāvitrī tuṣṭim abhyagāt svarūpiṇī
tadā rājan darśayāmāsa tam nṛpam
10. He maintained this discipline (niyama) for eighteen full years. When the eighteenth year was completed, Sāvitrī attained satisfaction and then, O King (rājan), appeared to that king in her true form.
अग्निहोत्रात्समुत्थाय हर्षेण महतान्विता ।
उवाच चैनं वरदा वचनं पार्थिवं तदा ॥११॥
11. agnihotrātsamutthāya harṣeṇa mahatānvitā ,
uvāca cainaṁ varadā vacanaṁ pārthivaṁ tadā.
11. agnihotrāt samutthāya harṣeṇa mahatā anvitā
uvāca ca enam varadā vacanam pārthivam tadā
11. Then, having risen from the agnihotra ritual, she, the giver of boons, filled with great joy, spoke this word to him, the king.
ब्रह्मचर्येण शुद्धेन दमेन नियमेन च ।
सर्वात्मना च मद्भक्त्या तुष्टास्मि तव पार्थिव ॥१२॥
12. brahmacaryeṇa śuddhena damena niyamena ca ,
sarvātmanā ca madbhaktyā tuṣṭāsmi tava pārthiva.
12. brahmacaryeṇa śuddhena damena niyamena ca
sarvātmanā ca madbhaktyā tuṣṭā asmi tava pārthiva
12. O King (pārthiva), I am pleased with your pure celibacy (brahmacarya), self-control (dama), discipline, and devotion (bhakti) to me with your entire being (ātman).
वरं वृणीष्वाश्वपते मद्रराज यथेप्सितम् ।
न प्रमादश्च धर्मेषु कर्तव्यस्ते कथंचन ॥१३॥
13. varaṁ vṛṇīṣvāśvapate madrarāja yathepsitam ,
na pramādaśca dharmeṣu kartavyaste kathaṁcana.
13. varam vṛṇīṣva aśvapate madrarāja yathepsitam na
pramādaḥ ca dharmeṣu kartavyaḥ te kathaṃcana
13. O Aśvapati, king of Madra, choose the boon (vara) you desire! And you must never, in any way, be negligent in your duties (dharma).
अश्वपतिरुवाच ।
अपत्यार्थः समारम्भः कृतो धर्मेप्सया मया ।
पुत्रा मे बहवो देवि भवेयुः कुलभावनाः ॥१४॥
14. aśvapatiruvāca ,
apatyārthaḥ samārambhaḥ kṛto dharmepsayā mayā ,
putrā me bahavo devi bhaveyuḥ kulabhāvanāḥ.
14. aśvapatiḥ uvāca apatyārthaḥ samārambhaḥ kṛtaḥ dharmepsayā
mayā putrāḥ me bahavaḥ devi bhaveyuḥ kulabhāvanāḥ
14. Aśvapati spoke: 'O Goddess, this endeavor (samārambha) was undertaken by me with the desire for progeny as a duty (dharma). May I have many sons who will maintain the family line.'
तुष्टासि यदि मे देवि काममेतं वृणोम्यहम् ।
संतानं हि परो धर्म इत्याहुर्मां द्विजातयः ॥१५॥
15. tuṣṭāsi yadi me devi kāmametaṁ vṛṇomyaham ,
saṁtānaṁ hi paro dharma ityāhurmāṁ dvijātayaḥ.
15. tuṣṭā asi yadi me devi kāmam etam vṛṇomi aham |
santānam hi paraḥ dharmaḥ iti āhuḥ mām dvijātayaḥ
15. If you are pleased with me, O goddess, I choose this boon. For, 'progeny is the highest natural law (dharma)', thus have the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) told me.
सावित्र्युवाच ।
पूर्वमेव मया राजन्नभिप्रायमिमं तव ।
ज्ञात्वा पुत्रार्थमुक्तो वै तव हेतोः पितामहः ॥१६॥
16. sāvitryuvāca ,
pūrvameva mayā rājannabhiprāyamimaṁ tava ,
jñātvā putrārthamukto vai tava hetoḥ pitāmahaḥ.
16. sāvitrī uvāca | pūrvam eva mayā rājan abhiprāyam imam
tava | jñātvā putrārtham uktaḥ vai tava hetoḥ pitāmahaḥ
16. Savitri said: "O King, knowing this intention of yours beforehand regarding a son, the Grandsire (Pitāmaha) was indeed addressed by me for your sake."
प्रसादाच्चैव तस्मात्ते स्वयंभुविहिताद्भुवि ।
कन्या तेजस्विनी सौम्य क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥१७॥
17. prasādāccaiva tasmātte svayaṁbhuvihitādbhuvi ,
kanyā tejasvinī saumya kṣiprameva bhaviṣyati.
17. prasādāt ca eva tasmāt te svayambhuvihitāt bhuvi
| kanyā tejasvinī saumya kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati
17. And by that very grace, bestowed by Svayambhu (Brahma) upon the earth, a radiant and gentle daughter will swiftly come to be for you, O gentle one.
उत्तरं च न ते किंचिद्व्याहर्तव्यं कथंचन ।
पितामहनिसर्गेण तुष्टा ह्येतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१८॥
18. uttaraṁ ca na te kiṁcidvyāhartavyaṁ kathaṁcana ,
pitāmahanisargeṇa tuṣṭā hyetadbravīmi te.
18. uttaram ca na te kiñcit vyāhartavyam kathaṃcana
| pitāmahanisargeṇa tuṣṭā hi etat bravīmi te
18. And no answer whatsoever should be given by you. Being pleased by the Grandsire's (Pitāmaha's) creation, I indeed tell you this.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
स तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय सावित्र्या वचनं नृपः ।
प्रसादयामास पुनः क्षिप्रमेवं भवेदिति ॥१९॥
19. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
sa tatheti pratijñāya sāvitryā vacanaṁ nṛpaḥ ,
prasādayāmāsa punaḥ kṣipramevaṁ bhavediti.
19. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca | saḥ tathā iti pratijñāya sāvitryā
vacanam nṛpaḥ | prasādayāmāsa punaḥ kṣipram evam bhavet iti
19. Markandeya said: The king, having promised "So be it" in response to Savitri's words, again appeased her, wishing that it would quickly come to pass.
अन्तर्हितायां सावित्र्यां जगाम स्वगृहं नृपः ।
स्वराज्ये चावसत्प्रीतः प्रजा धर्मेण पालयन् ॥२०॥
20. antarhitāyāṁ sāvitryāṁ jagāma svagṛhaṁ nṛpaḥ ,
svarājye cāvasatprītaḥ prajā dharmeṇa pālayan.
20. antarhitāyām sāvitryām jagāma svagṛham nṛpaḥ |
svarājye ca avasat prītaḥ prajāḥ dharmeṇa pālayan
20. After Savitri had vanished, the king returned to his own palace. And, feeling content, he lived in his own kingdom, governing his subjects according to natural law (dharma).
कस्मिंश्चित्तु गते काले स राजा नियतव्रतः ।
ज्येष्ठायां धर्मचारिण्यां महिष्यां गर्भमादधे ॥२१॥
21. kasmiṁścittu gate kāle sa rājā niyatavrataḥ ,
jyeṣṭhāyāṁ dharmacāriṇyāṁ mahiṣyāṁ garbhamādadhe.
21. kasmin cit tu gate kāle saḥ rājā niyatavrataḥ |
jyeṣṭhāyām dharmacāriṇyām mahiṣyām garbham ādade
21. After a certain period of time had elapsed, that king, who was steadfast in his observances, impregnated his eldest and virtuous chief queen.
राजपुत्र्यां तु गर्भः स मालव्यां भरतर्षभ ।
व्यवर्धत यथा शुक्ले तारापतिरिवाम्बरे ॥२२॥
22. rājaputryāṁ tu garbhaḥ sa mālavyāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
vyavardhata yathā śukle tārāpatirivāmbare.
22. rājaputryām tu garbhaḥ saḥ mālavyām bharatarṣabha
| vyavardhata yathā śukle tārāpatiḥ iva ambare
22. O best of the Bharatas, that embryo grew within Princess Malavi, just as the moon waxes in the bright fortnight of the sky.
प्राप्ते काले तु सुषुवे कन्यां राजीवलोचनाम् ।
क्रियाश्च तस्या मुदितश्चक्रे स नृपतिस्तदा ॥२३॥
23. prāpte kāle tu suṣuve kanyāṁ rājīvalocanām ,
kriyāśca tasyā muditaścakre sa nṛpatistadā.
23. prāpte kāle tu suṣuve kanyām rājīvalocanām
kriyāḥ ca tasyāḥ muditaḥ cakre sa nṛpatiḥ tadā
23. Then, at the proper time, she gave birth to a lotus-eyed daughter. That king then joyfully performed her (birth) rites.
सावित्र्या प्रीतया दत्ता सावित्र्या हुतया ह्यपि ।
सावित्रीत्येव नामास्याश्चक्रुर्विप्रास्तथा पिता ॥२४॥
24. sāvitryā prītayā dattā sāvitryā hutayā hyapi ,
sāvitrītyeva nāmāsyāścakrurviprāstathā pitā.
24. sāvitryā prītayā dattā sāvitryā hutayā hi api
sāvitrī iti eva nāma asyāḥ cakruḥ viprāḥ tathā pitā
24. Since she was given by the pleased Sāvitrī (Goddess) and also by the invoked Sāvitrī (Goddess), the brahmins and her father named her Sāvitrī.
सा विग्रहवतीव श्रीर्व्यवर्धत नृपात्मजा ।
कालेन चापि सा कन्या यौवनस्था बभूव ह ॥२५॥
25. sā vigrahavatīva śrīrvyavardhata nṛpātmajā ,
kālena cāpi sā kanyā yauvanasthā babhūva ha.
25. sā vigrahavatī iva śrīḥ vyavardhata nṛpātmajā
kālena ca api sā kanyā yauvanasthā babhūva ha
25. That princess (nṛpātmajā) grew up like fortune (śrī) personified. And in due course, that girl indeed reached the prime of youth.
तां सुमध्यां पृथुश्रोणीं प्रतिमां काञ्चनीमिव ।
प्राप्तेयं देवकन्येति दृष्ट्वा संमेनिरे जनाः ॥२६॥
26. tāṁ sumadhyāṁ pṛthuśroṇīṁ pratimāṁ kāñcanīmiva ,
prāpteyaṁ devakanyeti dṛṣṭvā saṁmenire janāḥ.
26. tām sumadhyām pṛthuśroṇīm pratimām kāñcanīm iva
prāptā iyam devakanyā iti dṛṣṭvā sammenire janāḥ
26. Seeing her, who was slender-waisted and broad-hipped, like a golden statue, people thought, "This divine maiden (devakanyā) has arrived."
तां तु पद्मपलाशाक्षीं ज्वलन्तीमिव तेजसा ।
न कश्चिद्वरयामास तेजसा प्रतिवारितः ॥२७॥
27. tāṁ tu padmapalāśākṣīṁ jvalantīmiva tejasā ,
na kaścidvarayāmāsa tejasā prativāritaḥ.
27. tām tu padmapalāśākṣīm jvalantīm iva tejasā
na kaścit varayāmāsa tejasā prativāritaḥ
27. But her, whose eyes were like lotus petals and who shone as if blazing with splendor, no one desired in marriage, being deterred by her radiance.
अथोपोष्य शिरःस्नाता दैवतान्यभिगम्य सा ।
हुत्वाग्निं विधिवद्विप्रान्वाचयामास पर्वणि ॥२८॥
28. athopoṣya śiraḥsnātā daivatānyabhigamya sā ,
hutvāgniṁ vidhivadviprānvācayāmāsa parvaṇi.
28. atha upoṣya śiraḥsnātā daivatāni abhigamya sā
hutvā agnim vidhivat viprān vācayāmāsa parvaṇi
28. Then, after fasting, taking a ritual head bath, and approaching the deities, she offered oblations to the fire according to the prescribed rites, and on that auspicious day, she made the Brahmins recite blessings.
ततः सुमनसः शेषाः प्रतिगृह्य महात्मनः ।
पितुः सकाशमगमद्देवी श्रीरिव रूपिणी ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ sumanasaḥ śeṣāḥ pratigṛhya mahātmanaḥ ,
pituḥ sakāśamagamaddevī śrīriva rūpiṇī.
29. tataḥ sumanasaḥ śeṣāḥ pratigṛhya mahātmanaḥ
pituḥ sakāśam agamat devī śrīḥ iva rūpiṇī
29. Thereafter, having received the remaining auspicious flowers (from the ritual or from the Brahmins), that goddess-like princess, beautiful as the goddess Śrī, went to her father's presence.
साभिवाद्य पितुः पादौ शेषाः पूर्वं निवेद्य च ।
कृताञ्जलिर्वरारोहा नृपतेः पार्श्वतः स्थिता ॥३०॥
30. sābhivādya pituḥ pādau śeṣāḥ pūrvaṁ nivedya ca ,
kṛtāñjalirvarārohā nṛpateḥ pārśvataḥ sthitā.
30. sā abhivādya pituḥ pādau śeṣāḥ pūrvam nivedya
ca kṛtāñjaliḥ varārohā nṛpateḥ pārśvataḥ sthitā
30. Having first presented the remaining offerings and then saluted her father's feet, she, the beautiful one, stood beside the king with folded hands.
यौवनस्थां तु तां दृष्ट्वा स्वां सुतां देवरूपिणीम् ।
अयाच्यमानां च वरैर्नृपतिर्दुःखितोऽभवत् ॥३१॥
31. yauvanasthāṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā svāṁ sutāṁ devarūpiṇīm ,
ayācyamānāṁ ca varairnṛpatirduḥkhito'bhavat.
31. yauvanasthām tu tām dṛṣṭvā svām sutām devarūpiṇīm
ayācyamānām ca varaiḥ nṛpatiḥ duḥkhitaḥ abhavat
31. When the king saw his own daughter, who was in her youth and possessed a divine beauty, and observed that she was not being sought by suitors, he became distressed.
राजोवाच ।
पुत्रि प्रदानकालस्ते न च कश्चिद्वृणोति माम् ।
स्वयमन्विच्छ भर्तारं गुणैः सदृशमात्मनः ॥३२॥
32. rājovāca ,
putri pradānakālaste na ca kaścidvṛṇoti mām ,
svayamanviccha bhartāraṁ guṇaiḥ sadṛśamātmanaḥ.
32. rājā uvāca putri pradānakālaḥ te na ca kaścid vṛṇoti
mām svayam anviccha bhartāram guṇaiḥ sadṛśam ātmanaḥ
32. The king said, 'Daughter, it is time for your hand to be given in marriage, yet no one seeks me for it. Therefore, you must personally search for a husband, one who is similar to you in qualities.'
प्रार्थितः पुरुषो यश्च स निवेद्यस्त्वया मम ।
विमृश्याहं प्रदास्यामि वरय त्वं यथेप्सितम् ॥३३॥
33. prārthitaḥ puruṣo yaśca sa nivedyastvayā mama ,
vimṛśyāhaṁ pradāsyāmi varaya tvaṁ yathepsitam.
33. prārthitaḥ puruṣaḥ yaḥ ca saḥ nivedyaḥ tvayā mama
vimṛśya aham pradāsyāmi varaya tvam yathepsitam
33. And whichever man you choose, he must be reported to me. After I have considered (him), I will give (you in marriage). You may choose according to your desire.
श्रुतं हि धर्मशास्त्रे मे पठ्यमानं द्विजातिभिः ।
तथा त्वमपि कल्याणि गदतो मे वचः शृणु ॥३४॥
34. śrutaṁ hi dharmaśāstre me paṭhyamānaṁ dvijātibhiḥ ,
tathā tvamapi kalyāṇi gadato me vacaḥ śṛṇu.
34. śrutam hi dharmaśāstre me paṭhyamānam dvijātibhiḥ
tathā tvam api kalyāṇi gadataḥ me vacaḥ śṛṇu
34. Indeed, I have heard it recited by Brahmins in the law books concerning natural law (dharmaśāstra). Therefore, O auspicious one, you too listen to my words as I speak.
अप्रदाता पिता वाच्यो वाच्यश्चानुपयन्पतिः ।
मृते भर्तरि पुत्रश्च वाच्यो मातुररक्षिता ॥३५॥
35. apradātā pitā vācyo vācyaścānupayanpatiḥ ,
mṛte bhartari putraśca vācyo māturarakṣitā.
35. apradātā pitā vācyaḥ vācyaḥ ca anupayan patiḥ
mṛte bhartari putraḥ ca vācyaḥ mātuḥ arakṣitā
35. A father who does not provide is to be condemned. A husband who does not support (his wife) is also to be condemned. And a son who does not protect his mother after his father has died is (likewise) to be condemned.
इदं मे वचनं श्रुत्वा भर्तुरन्वेषणे त्वर ।
देवतानां यथा वाच्यो न भवेयं तथा कुरु ॥३६॥
36. idaṁ me vacanaṁ śrutvā bharturanveṣaṇe tvara ,
devatānāṁ yathā vācyo na bhaveyaṁ tathā kuru.
36. idam me vacanam śrutvā bhartuḥ anveṣaṇe tvar
devatānām yathā vācyaḥ na bhaveyam tathā kuru
36. Having heard this instruction of mine, hasten in the search for your husband. Act in such a way that I may not become blameable (vācya) before the gods.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा दुहितरं तथा वृद्धांश्च मन्त्रिणः ।
व्यादिदेशानुयात्रं च गम्यतामित्यचोदयत् ॥३७॥
37. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamuktvā duhitaraṁ tathā vṛddhāṁśca mantriṇaḥ ,
vyādideśānuyātraṁ ca gamyatāmityacodayat.
37. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca evam uktvā duhitaram tathā vṛddhān ca
mantriṇaḥ vyādideśa anuyātram ca gamyatām iti acodayat
37. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having thus spoken to his daughter and the elderly ministers, he issued instructions and urged them, saying, 'Let the journey commence!'
साभिवाद्य पितुः पादौ व्रीडितेव मनस्विनी ।
पितुर्वचनमाज्ञाय निर्जगामाविचारितम् ॥३८॥
38. sābhivādya pituḥ pādau vrīḍiteva manasvinī ,
piturvacanamājñāya nirjagāmāvicāritam.
38. sā abhivādya pituḥ pādau vrīḍitā iva manasvinī
pituḥ vacanam ājñāya nirjagāma avicāritam
38. She, the high-minded woman, as if ashamed, having bowed down to her father's feet and having understood her father's command, departed without hesitation.
सा हैमं रथमास्थाय स्थविरैः सचिवैर्वृता ।
तपोवनानि रम्याणि राजर्षीणां जगाम ह ॥३९॥
39. sā haimaṁ rathamāsthāya sthaviraiḥ sacivairvṛtā ,
tapovanāni ramyāṇi rājarṣīṇāṁ jagāma ha.
39. sā haimam ratham āsthāya sthaviraiḥ sacivaiḥ
vṛtā tapovanāni ramyāṇi rājarṣīṇām jagāma ha
39. Having mounted a golden chariot and accompanied by her elderly ministers, she went to the charming hermitages of the royal sages.
मान्यानां तत्र वृद्धानां कृत्वा पादाभिवन्दनम् ।
वनानि क्रमशस्तात सर्वाण्येवाभ्यगच्छत ॥४०॥
40. mānyānāṁ tatra vṛddhānāṁ kṛtvā pādābhivandanam ,
vanāni kramaśastāta sarvāṇyevābhyagacchata.
40. mānyānām tatra vṛddhānām kṛtvā pādābhivandanam
vanāni kramaśaḥ tāta sarvāṇi eva abhyagacchata
40. O dear one, having bowed at the feet of the venerable elders there, she then successively visited all the forests.
एवं सर्वेषु तीर्थेषु धनोत्सर्गं नृपात्मजा ।
कुर्वती द्विजमुख्यानां तं तं देशं जगाम ह ॥४१॥
41. evaṁ sarveṣu tīrtheṣu dhanotsargaṁ nṛpātmajā ,
kurvatī dvijamukhyānāṁ taṁ taṁ deśaṁ jagāma ha.
41. evam sarveṣu tīrtheṣu dhanotsargam nṛpātmajā
kurvatī dvijamukhyānām tam tam deśam jagāma ha
41. Thus, the king's daughter, performing donations (dāna) of wealth in all the sacred bathing places for the chief Brahmins, successively visited each region.
