Vaiśampāyana said, "O great king, after being addressed in this manner, Kuntī then spoke to her husband Pāṇḍu, who was a hero, the best among the Kurus, and the lord of the earth."

O knower of natural law (dharma), O lotus-eyed one, you should never speak to me, your devoted wife (dharma patnī), in such a way.

And now, O broad-eyed one, listen to this righteous (dharmya) and ancient story of mine, a well-known one, which I will narrate.

7.
Indeed, there was formerly a king, famous as Vyūṣitāśva, who was most righteous (parama-dharmiṣṭha) and a proliferator of Pūru's lineage.

When that great-souled (mahātman) and righteous (dharmātman) patron of the Vedic ritual (yajamāna) was present, the gods, accompanied by Indra and the great sages, arrived.

Then, at the Vedic ritual (yajña) of the great-souled royal sage (rājarṣi) Vyūṣitāśva, Indra became exhilarated by the Soma, and the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) were delighted by the sacrificial fees.

Then, O King, Vyūṣitāśva greatly shone forth, surpassing mortals, just as the sun (tapana) excels all beings at the end of the winter season.

12.
During the great Aśvamedha Vedic ritual (yajña), the glorious Vyūṣitāśva truly became the king of kings (rājendra), endowed with the strength of ten elephants.

Regarding this, people who know the ancient stories (Purāṇas) also sing a verse: "Vyūṣitāśva, having conquered this entire earth, which extends to the oceans, protected all social classes (varṇa) just as a father protects his legitimate sons."

14.
The patron (yajamāna), through great Vedic rituals (yajña), bestowed wealth upon the Brahmins. Collecting countless jewels, he conducted grand Vedic rituals (kratu) and pressed many Soma juices, thereby also establishing numerous Soma (yajña) ceremonies.

30.
Arise, O gentle lady, and go. I shall now grant you a boon. O sweetly smiling one, I myself will bestow children upon you.

31.
And, O beautiful lady, you should lie down with me on your own couch on the fourteenth or eighth day, after bathing following your menstruation.

Thus addressed, that goddess, a devoted wife (pativratā), acted accordingly. Bhadrā, seeking a son, did exactly as that instruction had been given then.

O king, that goddess bore by him, (even though he was like) a corpse. She bore three Śālva sons and four Madra sons, O best of Bharatas.

34.
Similarly, O best of Bharatas, you too are capable of begetting sons with your mind, through the strength derived from asceticism (tapas) and meditative absorption (yoga).
