वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तयोर्दुःखितयोर्वाक्यमतिमात्रं निशम्य तत् ।
भृशं दुःखपरीताङ्गी कन्या तावभ्यभाषत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tayorduḥkhitayorvākyamatimātraṁ niśamya tat ,
bhṛśaṁ duḥkhaparītāṅgī kanyā tāvabhyabhāṣata.
1. vaiśampāyana uvāca tayoḥ duḥkhitayoḥ vākyam atimātram
niśamya tat bhṛśam duḥkhaparītāṅgī kanyā tau abhyabhāṣata
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard the extremely sorrowful words of those two distressed individuals, the maiden, whose body was deeply enveloped by grief, spoke to them both.
किमिदं भृशदुःखार्तौ रोरवीथो अनाथवत् ।
ममापि श्रूयतां किंचिच्छ्रुत्वा च क्रियतां क्षमम् ॥२॥
2. kimidaṁ bhṛśaduḥkhārtau roravītho anāthavat ,
mamāpi śrūyatāṁ kiṁcicchrutvā ca kriyatāṁ kṣamam.
2. kim idam bhṛśaduḥkha ārtau roravīthaḥ anāthavat
mama api śrūyatām kiñcit śrutvā ca kriyatām kṣamam
2. Why are you two, greatly afflicted by sorrow, crying out like orphans? Let something be heard from me too; and having heard it, let what is suitable be done.
धर्मतोऽहं परित्याज्या युवयोर्नात्र संशयः ।
त्यक्तव्यां मां परित्यज्य त्रातं सर्वं मयैकया ॥३॥
3. dharmato'haṁ parityājyā yuvayornātra saṁśayaḥ ,
tyaktavyāṁ māṁ parityajya trātaṁ sarvaṁ mayaikayā.
3. dharmataḥ aham parityājyā yuvayoḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ
tyaktavyām mām parityajya trātam sarvam mayā ekayā
3. According to natural law (dharma), I am to be abandoned by you two; there is no doubt about this. By abandoning me, who is indeed to be forsaken, everything has been saved by me alone.
इत्यर्थमिष्यतेऽपत्यं तारयिष्यति मामिति ।
तस्मिन्नुपस्थिते काले तरतं प्लववन्मया ॥४॥
4. ityarthamiṣyate'patyaṁ tārayiṣyati māmiti ,
tasminnupasthite kāle tarataṁ plavavanmayā.
4. iti artham iṣyate apatyam tārayiṣyati mām iti
tasmin upasthite kāle taratam plavavat mayā
4. It is for this reason that an offspring is desired, with the thought, 'It will ferry me across.' Now, when that specific time (of distress) has arrived, you two should cross over (your troubles) by me, as if by a boat.
इह वा तारयेद्दुर्गादुत वा प्रेत्य तारयेत् ।
सर्वथा तारयेत्पुत्रः पुत्र इत्युच्यते बुधैः ॥५॥
5. iha vā tārayeddurgāduta vā pretya tārayet ,
sarvathā tārayetputraḥ putra ityucyate budhaiḥ.
5. iha vā tārayet durgāt uta vā pretya tārayet
sarvathā tārayet putraḥ putra iti ucyate budhaiḥ
5. Either here, an offspring saves from dangers, or after death, it saves. In every way, a son (putra) saves; that is why he is called 'putra' by the wise.
आकाङ्क्षन्ते च दौहित्रानपि नित्यं पितामहाः ।
तान्स्वयं वै परित्रास्ये रक्षन्ती जीवितं पितुः ॥६॥
6. ākāṅkṣante ca dauhitrānapi nityaṁ pitāmahāḥ ,
tānsvayaṁ vai paritrāsye rakṣantī jīvitaṁ pituḥ.
6. ākaṅkṣante ca dauhitrān api nityam pitāmahāḥ
tān svayam vai paritrāsye rakṣantī jīvitam pituḥ
6. Grandfathers constantly long for their grandsons. I myself will certainly protect them, thereby preserving my father's life.
भ्राता च मम बालोऽयं गते लोकममुं त्वयि ।
अचिरेणैव कालेन विनश्येत न संशयः ॥७॥
7. bhrātā ca mama bālo'yaṁ gate lokamamuṁ tvayi ,
acireṇaiva kālena vinaśyeta na saṁśayaḥ.
7. bhrātā ca mama bālaḥ ayam gate lokam amum
tvayi acireṇa eva kālena vinaśyeta na saṃśayaḥ
7. And this young brother of mine, if you were to depart to the other world (i.e., die), would undoubtedly perish in a very short time.
तातेऽपि हि गते स्वर्गं विनष्टे च ममानुजे ।
पिण्डः पितॄणां व्युच्छिद्येत्तत्तेषामप्रियं भवेत् ॥८॥
8. tāte'pi hi gate svargaṁ vinaṣṭe ca mamānuje ,
piṇḍaḥ pitṝṇāṁ vyucchidyettatteṣāmapriyaṁ bhavet.
8. tāte api hi gate svargam vinaṣṭe ca mama anuje
piṇḍaḥ pitṝṇām vyucchidyeta tat teṣām apriyam bhavet
8. Indeed, if my father were to go to heaven and my younger brother were to perish, then the funeral oblation (piṇḍa) for our ancestors (pitṛ) would be interrupted, and that would be displeasing to them.
पित्रा त्यक्ता तथा मात्रा भ्रात्रा चाहमसंशयम् ।
दुःखाद्दुःखतरं प्राप्य म्रियेयमतथोचिता ॥९॥
9. pitrā tyaktā tathā mātrā bhrātrā cāhamasaṁśayam ,
duḥkhādduḥkhataraṁ prāpya mriyeyamatathocitā.
9. pitrā tyaktā tathā mātrā bhrātrā ca aham asaṃśayam
duḥkhāt duḥkhataram prāpya mriyeyam atathocitā
9. Abandoned by my father, mother, and brother, I would undoubtedly experience misery greater than any misery I've known, and thus, though unaccustomed to such a fate, I would die.
त्वयि त्वरोगे निर्मुक्ते माता भ्राता च मे शिशुः ।
संतानश्चैव पिण्डश्च प्रतिष्ठास्यत्यसंशयम् ॥१०॥
10. tvayi tvaroge nirmukte mātā bhrātā ca me śiśuḥ ,
saṁtānaścaiva piṇḍaśca pratiṣṭhāsyatyasaṁśayam.
10. tvayi tu aroge nirmukte mātā bhrātā ca me śiśuḥ
saṃtānaḥ ca eva piṇḍaḥ ca pratiṣṭhāsyati asaṃśayam
10. However, if you are healthy and released, then my mother, my child-brother, and indeed, both our lineage (saṃtāna) and the ancestral oblations (piṇḍa) will undoubtedly be maintained.
आत्मा पुत्रः सखा भार्या कृच्छ्रं तु दुहिता किल ।
स कृच्छ्रान्मोचयात्मानं मां च धर्मेण योजय ॥११॥
11. ātmā putraḥ sakhā bhāryā kṛcchraṁ tu duhitā kila ,
sa kṛcchrānmocayātmānaṁ māṁ ca dharmeṇa yojaya.
11. ātmā putraḥ sakhā bhāryā kṛcchram tu duhitā kila
sa kṛcchrāt mocaya ātmanam mām ca dharmeṇa yojaya
11. A son, a friend, and a wife are like one's own self (ātman), but a daughter is certainly a hardship. Therefore, free yourself from this hardship and connect me with your natural law (dharma).
अनाथा कृपणा बाला यत्रक्वचनगामिनी ।
भविष्यामि त्वया तात विहीना कृपणा बत ॥१२॥
12. anāthā kṛpaṇā bālā yatrakvacanagāminī ,
bhaviṣyāmi tvayā tāta vihīnā kṛpaṇā bata.
12. anāthā kṛpaṇā bālā yatra kvacanagāminī
bhaviṣyāmi tvayā tāta vihīnā kṛpaṇā bata
12. O father, I am a helpless, pitiable girl who will wander anywhere; without you, I will become utterly wretched and forlorn.
अथ वाहं करिष्यामि कुलस्यास्य विमोक्षणम् ।
फलसंस्था भविष्यामि कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥१३॥
13. atha vāhaṁ kariṣyāmi kulasyāsya vimokṣaṇam ,
phalasaṁsthā bhaviṣyāmi kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram.
13. atha vā aham kariṣyāmi kulasya asya vimokṣaṇam
phalasamsthā bhaviṣyāmi kṛtvā karma sudurṣkaram
13. Or else, I myself will achieve the liberation of this family. I will be steadfast in the outcome (of my actions), having performed an exceedingly difficult deed (karma).
अथ वा यास्यसे तत्र त्यक्त्वा मां द्विजसत्तम ।
पीडिताहं भविष्यामि तदवेक्षस्व मामपि ॥१४॥
14. atha vā yāsyase tatra tyaktvā māṁ dvijasattama ,
pīḍitāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi tadavekṣasva māmapi.
14. atha vā yāsyase tatra tyaktvā mām dvijasattama
pīḍitā aham bhaviṣyāmi tad avekṣasva mām api
14. Or, if you leave me and go there, O best among the twice-born (dvijasattama), I will be greatly afflicted. Therefore, please look after me as well.
तदस्मदर्थं धर्मार्थं प्रसवार्थं च सत्तम ।
आत्मानं परिरक्षस्व त्यक्तव्यां मां च संत्यज ॥१५॥
15. tadasmadarthaṁ dharmārthaṁ prasavārthaṁ ca sattama ,
ātmānaṁ parirakṣasva tyaktavyāṁ māṁ ca saṁtyaja.
15. tad asmadartham dharmārtham prasavārtham ca sattama
ātmanam parirakṣasva tyaktavyām mām ca samtyaj
15. Therefore, O most excellent one, for our sake, for the sake of natural law (dharma), and for the sake of progeny, protect yourself (ātman), and abandon me, who am destined to be forsaken.
अवश्यकरणीयेऽर्थे मा त्वां कालोऽत्यगादयम् ।
त्वया दत्तेन तोयेन भविष्यति हितं च मे ॥१६॥
16. avaśyakaraṇīye'rthe mā tvāṁ kālo'tyagādayam ,
tvayā dattena toyena bhaviṣyati hitaṁ ca me.
16. avaśyakaraṇīye arthe mā tvāṃ kālaḥ atyagāt ayam
tvayā dattena toyena bhaviṣyati hitam ca me
16. Do not let this time pass you by concerning this essential task. Through the water you give, my welfare will also be secured.
किं न्वतः परमं दुःखं यद्वयं स्वर्गते त्वयि ।
याचमानाः परादन्नं परिधावेमहि श्ववत् ॥१७॥
17. kiṁ nvataḥ paramaṁ duḥkhaṁ yadvayaṁ svargate tvayi ,
yācamānāḥ parādannaṁ paridhāvemahi śvavat.
17. kim nu ataḥ paramam duḥkham yat vayam svargate
tvayi yācamānāḥ parāt annam paridhāvemahi śvavat
17. What indeed is a greater sorrow than this, that we, after you have departed to heaven (svarga), should have to roam around like dogs, begging for food from others?
त्वयि त्वरोगे निर्मुक्ते क्लेशादस्मात्सबान्धवे ।
अमृते वसती लोके भविष्यामि सुखान्विता ॥१८॥
18. tvayi tvaroge nirmukte kleśādasmātsabāndhave ,
amṛte vasatī loke bhaviṣyāmi sukhānvitā.
18. tvayi tu aroge nirmukte kleśāt asmāt sabāndhave
amṛte vasati loke bhaviṣyāmi sukhānvitā
18. Once you are quickly freed from this suffering (kleśa), along with your relatives, and reside in the immortal world (loka), I will be filled with happiness.
एवं बहुविधं तस्या निशम्य परिदेवितम् ।
पिता माता च सा चैव कन्या प्ररुरुदुस्त्रयः ॥१९॥
19. evaṁ bahuvidhaṁ tasyā niśamya paridevitam ,
pitā mātā ca sā caiva kanyā prarurudustrayaḥ.
19. evam bahuvidham tasyāḥ niśamya paridevitam
pitā mātā ca sā ca eva kanyā praruruduḥ trayaḥ
19. Having thus heard her diverse lamentations (paridevitam), her father, mother, and that very daughter – all three – wept aloud.
ततः प्ररुदितान्सर्वान्निशम्याथ सुतस्तयोः ।
उत्फुल्लनयनो बालः कलमव्यक्तमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ praruditānsarvānniśamyātha sutastayoḥ ,
utphullanayano bālaḥ kalamavyaktamabravīt.
20. tataḥ praruditān sarvān niśamya atha sutaḥ tayoḥ
utphullanayanaḥ bālaḥ kalam avyaktam abravīt
20. Then, having heard all of them weeping, their son, the boy with wide-open eyes, spoke in a sweet, inarticulate voice.
मा रोदीस्तात मा मातर्मा स्वसस्त्वमिति ब्रुवन् ।
प्रहसन्निव सर्वांस्तानेकैकं सोऽपसर्पति ॥२१॥
21. mā rodīstāta mā mātarmā svasastvamiti bruvan ,
prahasanniva sarvāṁstānekaikaṁ so'pasarpati.
21. mā rodīḥ tāta mā mātaḥ mā svasaḥ tvam iti bruvan
prahasan iva sarvān tān ekaikam saḥ apasarati
21. Saying, 'Do not cry, father! Do not cry, mother! Do not cry, sister!' he approached them all, one by one, as if laughing.
ततः स तृणमादाय प्रहृष्टः पुनरब्रवीत् ।
अनेन तं हनिष्यामि राक्षसं पुरुषादकम् ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ sa tṛṇamādāya prahṛṣṭaḥ punarabravīt ,
anena taṁ haniṣyāmi rākṣasaṁ puruṣādakam.
22. tataḥ saḥ tṛṇam ādāya prahṛṣṭaḥ punar abravīt
anena tam haniṣyāmi rākṣasam puruṣādakam
22. Then, he, delighted, again spoke, taking a blade of grass, 'With this, I will kill that man-eating demon (rākṣasa)!'
तथापि तेषां दुःखेन परीतानां निशम्य तत् ।
बालस्य वाक्यमव्यक्तं हर्षः समभवन्महान् ॥२३॥
23. tathāpi teṣāṁ duḥkhena parītānāṁ niśamya tat ,
bālasya vākyamavyaktaṁ harṣaḥ samabhavanmahān.
23. tathāpi teṣām duḥkhena parītānām niśamya tat
bālasya vākyam avyaktam harṣaḥ samabhavat mahān
23. Nevertheless, having heard that indistinct speech of the child, a great joy arose in them, who were afflicted by sorrow.
अयं काल इति ज्ञात्वा कुन्ती समुपसृत्य तान् ।
गतासूनमृतेनेव जीवयन्तीदमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. ayaṁ kāla iti jñātvā kuntī samupasṛtya tān ,
gatāsūnamṛteneva jīvayantīdamabravīt.
24. ayam kālaḥ iti jñātvā kuntī samupasṛtya tān
gatāsūn amṛtena iva jīvayantī idam abravīt
24. Knowing, 'This is the right time,' Kunti approached them and, as if reviving the lifeless with nectar, she spoke these words.
