गन्धर्व उवाच ।
ततो दृष्ट्वाश्रमपदं रहितं तैः सुतैर्मुनिः ।
निर्जगाम सुदुःखार्तः पुनरेवाश्रमात्ततः ॥१॥
1. gandharva uvāca ,
tato dṛṣṭvāśramapadaṁ rahitaṁ taiḥ sutairmuniḥ ,
nirjagāma suduḥkhārtaḥ punarevāśramāttataḥ.
1. gandharvaḥ uvāca tataḥ dṛṣṭvā āśrama-padam rahitam taiḥ sutaiḥ
muniḥ nir-jagāma su-duḥkha-ārtaḥ punar eva āśramāt tataḥ
1. The Gandharva said: Then, having seen his hermitage (āśrama) grounds devoid of his sons, the sage, extremely afflicted by sorrow, departed from that hermitage (āśrama) once again.
सोऽपश्यत्सरितं पूर्णां प्रावृट्काले नवाम्भसा ।
वृक्षान्बहुविधान्पार्थ वहन्तीं तीरजान्बहून् ॥२॥
2. so'paśyatsaritaṁ pūrṇāṁ prāvṛṭkāle navāmbhasā ,
vṛkṣānbahuvidhānpārtha vahantīṁ tīrajānbahūn.
2. saḥ apaśyat saritam pūrṇām prāvṛṭ-kāle nava-ambhasā
vṛkṣān bahu-vidhān pārtha vahantīm tīra-jān bahūn
2. O Pārtha, he saw a river, brimming with fresh water during the rainy season, carrying away many kinds of trees that had grown on its banks.
अथ चिन्तां समापेदे पुनः पौरवनन्दन ।
अम्भस्यस्या निमज्जेयमिति दुःखसमन्वितः ॥३॥
3. atha cintāṁ samāpede punaḥ pauravanandana ,
ambhasyasyā nimajjeyamiti duḥkhasamanvitaḥ.
3. atha cintām samāpede punaḥ pauravanandana
ambhasi asyāḥ nimajjeyam iti duḥkhasamanvitaḥ
3. Then, O delight of the Pūrus, filled with sorrow, he again became anxious, thinking, 'I should drown myself in the waters of this river.'
ततः पाशैस्तदात्मानं गाढं बद्ध्वा महामुनिः ।
तस्या जले महानद्या निममज्ज सुदुःखितः ॥४॥
4. tataḥ pāśaistadātmānaṁ gāḍhaṁ baddhvā mahāmuniḥ ,
tasyā jale mahānadyā nimamajja suduḥkhitaḥ.
4. tataḥ pāśaiḥ tadā ātmānam gāḍham baddhvā mahāmuniḥ
tasyāḥ jale mahānadyāḥ nimamajja suduḥkhitaḥ
4. Then, the great sage, having tightly bound himself (ātman) with ropes, immersed himself in the waters of that great river, greatly distressed.
अथ छित्त्वा नदी पाशांस्तस्यारिबलमर्दन ।
समस्थं तमृषिं कृत्वा विपाशं समवासृजत् ॥५॥
5. atha chittvā nadī pāśāṁstasyāribalamardana ,
samasthaṁ tamṛṣiṁ kṛtvā vipāśaṁ samavāsṛjat.
5. atha chittvā nadī pāśān tasyāḥ aribalamardana
samastham tam ṛṣim kṛtvā vipāśam samavāsṛjat
5. Then, O destroyer of enemy forces, the river cut those bonds, making that sage unbound, and released him.
उत्ततार ततः पाशैर्विमुक्तः स महानृषिः ।
विपाशेति च नामास्या नद्याश्चक्रे महानृषिः ॥६॥
6. uttatāra tataḥ pāśairvimuktaḥ sa mahānṛṣiḥ ,
vipāśeti ca nāmāsyā nadyāścakre mahānṛṣiḥ.
6. uttatāra tataḥ pāśaiḥ vimuktaḥ saḥ mahānṛṣiḥ
vipāśā iti ca nāma asyāḥ nadyāḥ cakre mahānṛṣiḥ
6. Then, that great sage, freed from his bonds, emerged from the water. And the great sage named this river Vipāśā.
शोके बुद्धिं ततश्चक्रे न चैकत्र व्यतिष्ठत ।
सोऽगच्छत्पर्वतांश्चैव सरितश्च सरांसि च ॥७॥
7. śoke buddhiṁ tataścakre na caikatra vyatiṣṭhata ,
so'gacchatparvatāṁścaiva saritaśca sarāṁsi ca.
7. śoke buddhim tataḥ cakre na ca ekatra vyatiṣṭhata
saḥ agacchat parvatān ca eva saritaḥ ca sarāṃsi ca
7. Then, in his sorrow, he became resolute, and he did not remain in one place. He traveled to mountains, rivers, and lakes.
ततः स पुनरेवर्षिर्नदीं हैमवतीं तदा ।
चण्डग्राहवतीं दृष्ट्वा तस्याः स्रोतस्यवापतत् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ sa punarevarṣirnadīṁ haimavatīṁ tadā ,
caṇḍagrāhavatīṁ dṛṣṭvā tasyāḥ srotasyavāpatat.
8. tataḥ saḥ punaḥ eva ṛṣiḥ nadīm haimavatīm tadā
caṇḍagrāhavatīm dṛṣṭvā tasyāḥ srotasi avāpatat
8. Then, that sage, having seen the Himalayan river, which was full of fierce aquatic creatures, plunged into its current at that time.
सा तमग्निसमं विप्रमनुचिन्त्य सरिद्वरा ।
शतधा विद्रुता यस्माच्छतद्रुरिति विश्रुता ॥९॥
9. sā tamagnisamaṁ vipramanucintya saridvarā ,
śatadhā vidrutā yasmācchatadruriti viśrutā.
9. sā tam agnisamam vipram anucintya sarit varā
śatadhā vidrutā yasmāt śatadruḥ iti viśrutā
9. The best of rivers, having considered that brahmin (vipra) to be like fire, split into a hundred branches, and thus she became known as Śatadru.
ततः स्थलगतं दृष्ट्वा तत्राप्यात्मानमात्मना ।
मर्तुं न शक्यमित्युक्त्वा पुनरेवाश्रमं ययौ ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sthalagataṁ dṛṣṭvā tatrāpyātmānamātmanā ,
martuṁ na śakyamityuktvā punarevāśramaṁ yayau.
10. tataḥ sthalagatam dṛṣṭvā tatra api ātmānam ātmanā
martum na śakyam iti uktvā punaḥ eva āśramam yayau
10. Then, having seen himself on land, and realizing that even there it was not possible to die by his own means, he again returned to his hermitage (āśrama).
वध्वादृश्यन्त्यानुगत आश्रमाभिमुखो व्रजन् ।
अथ शुश्राव संगत्या वेदाध्ययननिःस्वनम् ।
पृष्ठतः परिपूर्णार्थैः षड्भिरङ्गैरलंकृतम् ॥११॥
11. vadhvādṛśyantyānugata āśramābhimukho vrajan ,
atha śuśrāva saṁgatyā vedādhyayananiḥsvanam ,
pṛṣṭhataḥ paripūrṇārthaiḥ ṣaḍbhiraṅgairalaṁkṛtam.
11. vadhū adṛśyantyā anugataḥ āśrama
abhimukhaḥ vrajan atha śuśrāva saṅgatyā
veda adhyayana niḥsvanam pṛṣṭhataḥ
paripūrṇa arthaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ aṅgaiḥ alaṅkṛtam
11. Then, as he walked towards the hermitage (āśrama), followed by Adṛśyantī who was invisible, he heard from behind the sound of Vedic study, adorned with its six auxiliary sciences (aṅga) and full of complete meaning.
अनुव्रजति को न्वेष मामित्येव च सोऽब्रवीत् ।
अहं त्वदृश्यती नाम्ना तं स्नुषा प्रत्यभाषत ।
शक्तेर्भार्या महाभाग तपोयुक्ता तपस्विनी ॥१२॥
12. anuvrajati ko nveṣa māmityeva ca so'bravīt ,
ahaṁ tvadṛśyatī nāmnā taṁ snuṣā pratyabhāṣata ,
śakterbhāryā mahābhāga tapoyuktā tapasvinī.
12. anuvrajati kaḥ nu eṣaḥ mām iti eva
ca saḥ abravīt aham tu adṛśyatī nāmnā
tam snuṣā pratyabhāṣata śakteḥ
bhāryā mahābhāga tapas yuktā tapasvinī
12. 'Who indeed follows me?' he asked. To him, the daughter-in-law, Adṛśyatī by name, replied, 'O highly esteemed one, I am the wife of Śakti, endowed with asceticism (tapas) and devoted to spiritual practices.'
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
पुत्रि कस्यैष साङ्गस्य वेदस्याध्ययनस्वनः ।
पुरा साङ्गस्य वेदस्य शक्तेरिव मया श्रुतः ॥१३॥
13. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
putri kasyaiṣa sāṅgasya vedasyādhyayanasvanaḥ ,
purā sāṅgasya vedasya śakteriva mayā śrutaḥ.
13. vasiṣṭhaḥ uvāca | putrī kasya eṣaḥ sāṅgasya vedasya
adhyayana-svanaḥ | purā sāṅgasya vedasya śakteḥ iva mayā śrutaḥ
13. Vasiṣṭha said: "Daughter, whose is this sound of the study of the Veda along with its auxiliary branches? Previously, such a sound of the Veda, complete with its auxiliary branches, was heard by me, like that of Śakti (my son)."
अदृश्यन्त्युवाच ।
अयं कुक्षौ समुत्पन्नः शक्तेर्गर्भः सुतस्य ते ।
समा द्वादश तस्येह वेदानभ्यसतो मुने ॥१४॥
14. adṛśyantyuvāca ,
ayaṁ kukṣau samutpannaḥ śaktergarbhaḥ sutasya te ,
samā dvādaśa tasyeha vedānabhyasato mune.
14. adṛśyantī uvāca | ayam kukṣau samutpannaḥ śakteḥ garbhaḥ
sutasya te | samāḥ dvādaśa tasya iha vedān abhyasataḥ mune
14. Adṛśyantī replied: "This is the embryo of your son Śakti, born in my womb. O sage, for him, while studying the Vedas here, twelve years have passed."
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्ततो हृष्टो वसिष्ठः श्रेष्ठभागृषिः ।
अस्ति संतानमित्युक्त्वा मृत्योः पार्थ न्यवर्तत ॥१५॥
15. gandharva uvāca ,
evamuktastato hṛṣṭo vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭhabhāgṛṣiḥ ,
asti saṁtānamityuktvā mṛtyoḥ pārtha nyavartata.
15. gandharvaḥ uvāca | evam uktaḥ
tataḥ hṛṣṭaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭha-bhāk
ṛṣiḥ | asti santānam iti
uktvā mṛtyoḥ pārtha nyavartata
15. The Gandharva said: "Having been told thus, Vasiṣṭha, the venerable sage, became delighted. Saying 'There is progeny!' he (Vasiṣṭha) then turned away from Death (Mṛtyu), O Pārtha."
ततः प्रतिनिवृत्तः स तया वध्वा सहानघ ।
कल्माषपादमासीनं ददर्श विजने वने ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ pratinivṛttaḥ sa tayā vadhvā sahānagha ,
kalmāṣapādamāsīnaṁ dadarśa vijane vane.
16. tataḥ pratinivṛttaḥ saḥ tayā vadhvā saha anagha
| kalmāṣapādam āsīnam dadarśa vijane vane
16. O sinless one, having then returned, he, accompanied by that daughter-in-law, saw Kalmāṣapāda seated in a desolate forest.
स तु दृष्ट्वैव तं राजा क्रुद्ध उत्थाय भारत ।
आविष्टो रक्षसोग्रेण इयेषात्तुं ततः स्म तम् ॥१७॥
17. sa tu dṛṣṭvaiva taṁ rājā kruddha utthāya bhārata ,
āviṣṭo rakṣasogreṇa iyeṣāttuṁ tataḥ sma tam.
17. saḥ tu dṛṣṭvā eva tam rājā kruddhaḥ utthāya bhārata
| āviṣṭaḥ rakṣasā ugreṇa iyeṣa attum tataḥ sma tam
17. But that king, O Bhārata, having seen him and immediately rising in anger, possessed by a fierce rākṣasa, then wished to devour him.
अदृश्यन्ती तु तं दृष्ट्वा क्रूरकर्माणमग्रतः ।
भयसंविग्नया वाचा वसिष्ठमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. adṛśyantī tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā krūrakarmāṇamagrataḥ ,
bhayasaṁvignayā vācā vasiṣṭhamidamabravīt.
18. adṛśyantī tu tam dṛṣṭvā krūrakarmāṇam agrataḥ
bhayasaṃvignayā vācā vasiṣṭham idam abravīt
18. However, Adṛśyantī, seeing that cruel-doer before her, spoke this to Vasiṣṭha with a voice agitated by fear.
असौ मृत्युरिवोग्रेण दण्डेन भगवन्नितः ।
प्रगृहीतेन काष्ठेन राक्षसोऽभ्येति भीषणः ॥१९॥
19. asau mṛtyurivogreṇa daṇḍena bhagavannitaḥ ,
pragṛhītena kāṣṭhena rākṣaso'bhyeti bhīṣaṇaḥ.
19. asau mṛtyuḥ iva ugreṇa daṇḍena bhagavan itaḥ
pragṛhītena kāṣṭhena rākṣasaḥ abhyeti bhīṣaṇaḥ
19. O revered one, this dreadful demon (rākṣasa) is approaching from this direction, like Death (Mṛtyu) holding a formidable staff (daṇḍa), which is a grasped log (kāṣṭha).
तं निवारयितुं शक्तो नान्योऽस्ति भुवि कश्चन ।
त्वदृतेऽद्य महाभाग सर्ववेदविदां वर ॥२०॥
20. taṁ nivārayituṁ śakto nānyo'sti bhuvi kaścana ,
tvadṛte'dya mahābhāga sarvavedavidāṁ vara.
20. tam nivārayitum śaktaḥ na anyaḥ asti bhuvi kaścana
tvad ṛte adya mahābhāga sarvavedavidām vara
20. No one else on earth is capable of warding him off, O greatly fortunate one, the best among all who know the Vedas, except for you.
त्राहि मां भगवन्पापादस्माद्दारुणदर्शनात् ।
रक्षो अत्तुमिह ह्यावां नूनमेतच्चिकीर्षति ॥२१॥
21. trāhi māṁ bhagavanpāpādasmāddāruṇadarśanāt ,
rakṣo attumiha hyāvāṁ nūnametaccikīrṣati.
21. trāhi mām bhagavan pāpāt asmāt dāruṇadarśanāt
rakṣaḥ attum iha hi āvām nūnam etat cikīrṣati
21. Protect me, O revered one, from this evil and from this terrifying sight. For surely, this demon (rakṣas) intends to devour us both here.
