युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एको लोकः सुकृतिनां सर्वे त्वाहो पितामह ।
उत तत्रापि नानात्वं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
eko lokaḥ sukṛtināṁ sarve tvāho pitāmaha ,
uta tatrāpi nānātvaṁ tanme brūhi pitāmaha.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: pitāmaha,

tat me brūhi.
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "Oh Grandfather, is there only one world for all virtuous people, or is there diversity even in that realm? Please tell me that, Grandfather."
भीष्म उवाच ।
कर्मभिः पार्थ नानात्वं लोकानां यान्ति मानवाः ।
पुण्यान्पुण्यकृतो यान्ति पापान्पापकृतो जनाः ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
karmabhiḥ pārtha nānātvaṁ lokānāṁ yānti mānavāḥ ,
puṇyānpuṇyakṛto yānti pāpānpāpakṛto janāḥ.
2. Bhīṣma uvāca karmabhiḥ pārtha nānātvam lokānām yānti
mānavāḥ puṇyān puṇyakṛtaḥ yānti pāpān pāpakṛtaḥ janāḥ
2. Bhīṣma uvāca: pārtha,
mānavāḥ karmabhiḥ lokānām nānātvam yānti.
puṇyakṛtaḥ puṇyān yānti,
pāpakṛtaḥ janāḥ pāpān (yānti).
2. Bhīṣma said: "O Pārtha, humans attain diverse worlds according to their actions (karma). Those who perform virtuous deeds reach pure realms, while those who commit evil deeds go to wicked realms."
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
गौतमस्य मुनेस्तात संवादं वासवस्य च ॥३॥
3. atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
gautamasya munestāta saṁvādaṁ vāsavasya ca.
3. atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam purātanam
Gautamasya muneḥ tāta saṃvādam vāsavasya ca
3. tāta,
atra api imam purātanam itihāsam,

3. Here, O dear one, they also cite this ancient narrative (itihāsa) concerning the dialogue between the sage (muni) Gautama and Vāsava (Indra).
ब्राह्मणो गौतमः कश्चिन्मृदुर्दान्तो जितेन्द्रियः ।
महावने हस्तिशिशुं परिद्यूनममातृकम् ॥४॥
4. brāhmaṇo gautamaḥ kaścinmṛdurdānto jitendriyaḥ ,
mahāvane hastiśiśuṁ paridyūnamamātṛkam.

4. kaścit brāhmaṇaḥ Gautamaḥ (āsīt).

4. There was a certain Brahmin named Gautama, who was gentle, self-controlled, and had subdued his senses. (One day, he saw) in a great forest an elephant calf, greatly distressed and motherless.
तं दृष्ट्वा जीवयामास सानुक्रोशो धृतव्रतः ।
स तु दीर्घेण कालेन बभूवातिबलो महान् ॥५॥
5. taṁ dṛṣṭvā jīvayāmāsa sānukrośo dhṛtavrataḥ ,
sa tu dīrgheṇa kālena babhūvātibalo mahān.

5. The compassionate one, firm in his vow, having seen him, brought him back to life. And he, over a long period, became exceedingly powerful and great.
तं प्रभिन्नं महानागं प्रस्रुतं सर्वतो मदम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्य रूपेण शक्रो जग्राह हस्तिनम् ॥६॥
6. taṁ prabhinnaṁ mahānāgaṁ prasrutaṁ sarvato madam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rūpeṇa śakro jagrāha hastinam.
6. tam prabhinnam mahānāgam prasrutam sarvataḥ madam
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rūpeṇa śakraḥ jagrāha hastinam

6. Indra, assuming the form of the (celestial) elephant Dhritarashtra, seized that great elephant which was in rut, exuding ichor from all sides.
ह्रियमाणं तु तं दृष्ट्वा गौतमः संशितव्रतः ।
अभ्यभाषत राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं महातपाः ॥७॥
7. hriyamāṇaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā gautamaḥ saṁśitavrataḥ ,
abhyabhāṣata rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahātapāḥ.
7. hriyamāṇam tu tam dṛṣṭvā gautamaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ
abhyabhāṣata rājānam dhṛtarāṣṭram mahātapaḥ

7. But Gautama, the great ascetic, firm in his vows, seeing him being carried away, addressed King Dhritarashtra.
मा मे हार्षीर्हस्तिनं पुत्रमेनं दुःखात्पुष्टं धृतराष्ट्राकृतज्ञ ।
मित्रं सतां सप्तपदं वदन्ति मित्रद्रोहो नैव राजन्स्पृशेत्त्वाम् ॥८॥
8. mā me hārṣīrhastinaṁ putramenaṁ; duḥkhātpuṣṭaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrākṛtajña ,
mitraṁ satāṁ saptapadaṁ vadanti; mitradroho naiva rājanspṛśettvām.
8. mā me hārṣīḥ hastinam putram enam
duḥkhāt puṣṭam dhṛtarāṣṭrā akṛtajña
mitram satām saptapadam vadanti
mitradrohaḥ na eva rājan spṛśet tvām
8. dhṛtarāṣṭrā akṛtajña me enam duḥkhāt
puṣṭam putram hastinam mā hārṣīḥ

8. O ungrateful Dhritarashtra, do not seize this elephant, my son, whom I nourished with great difficulty. The virtuous declare friendship after merely seven steps (of association). May the betrayal of a friend certainly not touch you, O King.
इध्मोदकप्रदातारं शून्यपालकमाश्रमे ।
विनीतमाचार्यकुले सुयुक्तं गुरुकर्मणि ॥९॥
9. idhmodakapradātāraṁ śūnyapālakamāśrame ,
vinītamācāryakule suyuktaṁ gurukarmaṇi.
9. idhmodakapradātāram śūnyapālakam āśrame
vinītam ācāryakule suyuktam gurukarmaṇi
9. He who provides fuel and water, who guards the hermitage when it is empty, who is disciplined in the teacher's household, and diligently engaged in the guru's (guru) service.
शिष्टं दान्तं कृतज्ञं च प्रियं च सततं मम ।
न मे विक्रोशतो राजन्हर्तुमर्हसि कुञ्जरम् ॥१०॥
10. śiṣṭaṁ dāntaṁ kṛtajñaṁ ca priyaṁ ca satataṁ mama ,
na me vikrośato rājanhartumarhasi kuñjaram.
10. śiṣṭam dāntam kṛtajñam ca priyam ca satatam mama
na me vikrośataḥ rājan hartum arhasi kuñjaram
10. Disciplined, self-controlled, grateful, and always dear to me. O king, you must not take away my elephant while I am lamenting.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
गवां सहस्रं भवते ददामि दासीशतं निष्कशतानि पञ्च ।
अन्यच्च वित्तं विविधं महर्षे किं ब्राह्मणस्येह गजेन कृत्यम् ॥११॥
11. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
gavāṁ sahasraṁ bhavate dadāmi; dāsīśataṁ niṣkaśatāni pañca ,
anyacca vittaṁ vividhaṁ maharṣe; kiṁ brāhmaṇasyeha gajena kṛtyam.
11. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca gavām sahasram
bhavate dadāmi dāsīśatam niṣkaśatāni
pañca anyat ca vittam vividham maharṣe
kim brāhmaṇasya iha gajena kṛtyam
11. Dhritarashtra said: 'I will give you a thousand cows, a hundred female servants, and five hundred gold coins (niṣka), as well as other various riches, O great sage. What use does a brahmin have for an elephant here?'
गौतम उवाच ।
त्वामेव गावोऽभि भवन्तु राजन्दास्यः सनिष्का विविधं च रत्नम् ।
अन्यच्च वित्तं विविधं नरेन्द्र किं ब्राह्मणस्येह धनेन कृत्यम् ॥१२॥
12. gautama uvāca ,
tvāmeva gāvo'bhi bhavantu rāja;ndāsyaḥ saniṣkā vividhaṁ ca ratnam ,
anyacca vittaṁ vividhaṁ narendra; kiṁ brāhmaṇasyeha dhanena kṛtyam.
12. gautama uvāca tvām eva gāvaḥ abhi
bhavantu rājan dāsyaḥ saniṣkā vividham ca
ratnam anyat ca vittam vividham
narendra kim brāhmaṇasya iha dhanena kṛtyam
12. Gautama said: 'May those cows, O king, and the female servants adorned with gold, and the various jewels, and all other diverse wealth belong to you alone. What use does a brahmin have for wealth here?'
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ब्राह्मणानां हस्तिभिर्नास्ति कृत्यं राजन्यानां नागकुलानि विप्र ।
स्वं वाहनं नयतो नास्त्यधर्मो नागश्रेष्ठाद्गौतमास्मान्निवर्त ॥१३॥
13. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ hastibhirnāsti kṛtyaṁ; rājanyānāṁ nāgakulāni vipra ,
svaṁ vāhanaṁ nayato nāstyadharmo; nāgaśreṣṭhādgautamāsmānnivarta.
13. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | brāhmaṇānām hastibhiḥ
na asti kṛtyam rājanyānām nāgakulāni
vipra | svam vāhanam nayataḥ na asti
adharmaḥ nāgaśreṣṭhāt gautama asmān nivarta
13. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca vipra brāhmaṇānām
hastibhiḥ kṛtyam na asti rājanyānām nāgakulāni
svam vāhanam nayataḥ adharmaḥ na
asti he gautama nāgaśreṣṭhāt asmān nivarta
13. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'Brahmins have no use for elephants; O Brahmin, the finest breeds of elephants are for kings. There is no unrighteousness (adharma) for one who takes his own vehicle. Therefore, O Gautama, turn back from this best of elephants for our sake.'
गौतम उवाच ।
यत्र प्रेतो नन्दति पुण्यकर्मा यत्र प्रेतः शोचति पापकर्मा ।
वैवस्वतस्य सदने महात्मनस्तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥१४॥
14. gautama uvāca ,
yatra preto nandati puṇyakarmā; yatra pretaḥ śocati pāpakarmā ,
vaivasvatasya sadane mahātmana;statra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
14. gautamaḥ uvāca | yatra pretaḥ nandati
puṇyakarmā yatra pretaḥ śocati
pāpakarmā | vaivasvatasya sadane mahātmanaḥ
tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
14. gautamaḥ uvāca yatra puṇyakarmā pretaḥ
nandati yatra pāpakarmā pretaḥ
śocati mahātmanaḥ vaivasvatasya sadane
tatra aham tvā hastinam yātayiṣye
14. Gautama said: 'Where the departed (preta) of meritorious (puṇya) actions rejoices, and where the departed (preta) of sinful (pāpa) actions grieves - in that abode of the great Yama (Vaivasvata) - there I shall send the elephant to you.'
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ये निष्क्रिया नास्तिकाः श्रद्दधानाः पापात्मान इन्द्रियार्थे निविष्टाः ।
यमस्य ते यातनां प्राप्नुवन्ति परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥१५॥
15. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye niṣkriyā nāstikāḥ śraddadhānāḥ; pāpātmāna indriyārthe niviṣṭāḥ ,
yamasya te yātanāṁ prāpnuvanti; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
15. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | ye niṣkriyāḥ nāstikāḥ
śraddadhānāḥ pāpātmānaḥ indriyārthe
niviṣṭāḥ | yamasya te yātanām
prāpnuvanti param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
15. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ye niṣkriyāḥ nāstikāḥ
śraddadhānāḥ pāpātmānaḥ indriyārthe
niviṣṭāḥ te yamasya yātanām prāpnuvanti
tatra dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ param gantā na
15. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'Those who are inactive, non-believers, [yet] faithful (śraddhā), with sinful natures, and engrossed in sense objects - they suffer Yama's torment. Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not be a chief among those who go there.'
गौतम उवाच ।
वैवस्वती संयमनी जनानां यत्रानृतं नोच्यते यत्र सत्यम् ।
यत्राबला बलिनं यातयन्ति तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥१६॥
16. gautama uvāca ,
vaivasvatī saṁyamanī janānāṁ; yatrānṛtaṁ nocyate yatra satyam ,
yatrābalā balinaṁ yātayanti; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
16. gautamaḥ uvāca | vaivasvatī saṃyamanī
janānām yatra anṛtam na ucyate yatra
satyam | yatra abalā balinam
yātayanti tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
16. gautamaḥ uvāca janānām vaivasvatī saṃyamanī [asti] yatra anṛtam na ucyate,
yatra satyam [ucyate] yatra abalāḥ balinam yātayanti,
tatra aham tvā hastinam yātayiṣye
16. Gautama said: 'In the controlling city (Saṃyamanī) of Yama (Vaivasvatī), for all people, where falsehood is not uttered and truth [alone] prevails, where the weak punish the strong - there I shall send the elephant to you.'
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ज्येष्ठां स्वसारं पितरं मातरं च गुरुं यथा मानयन्तश्चरन्ति ।
तथाविधानामेष लोको महर्षे परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥१७॥
17. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
jyeṣṭhāṁ svasāraṁ pitaraṁ mātaraṁ ca; guruṁ yathā mānayantaścaranti ,
tathāvidhānāmeṣa loko maharṣe; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
17. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | jyeṣṭhāṃ svasāraṃ
pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca guruṃ yathā mānayantaḥ
caranti | tathāvidhānām eṣaḥ lokaḥ
maharṣe param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
17. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca maharṣe,
ye janāḥ jyeṣṭhāṃ svasāraṃ pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca guruṃ yathā mānayantaḥ caranti,
eṣaḥ lokaḥ tathāvidhānām param gantā.
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tatra na.
17. Dhritarashtra said: "O great sage, for those who behave by honoring their elder sister, father, mother, and spiritual teacher (guru), this world leads them to the supreme destination. Dhritarashtra will not attain that place."
गौतम उवाच ।
मन्दाकिनी वैश्रवणस्य राज्ञो महाभोगा भोगिजनप्रवेश्या ।
गन्धर्वयक्षैरप्सरोभिश्च जुष्टा तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥१८॥
18. gautama uvāca ,
mandākinī vaiśravaṇasya rājño; mahābhogā bhogijanapraveśyā ,
gandharvayakṣairapsarobhiśca juṣṭā; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
18. gautamaḥ uvāca | mandākinī vaiśravaṇasya
rājñaḥ mahābhogā bhogijana-praveśyā
| gandharva-yakṣaiḥ apsarobhiḥ ca
juṣṭā tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
18. gautamaḥ uvāca mandākinī vaiśravaṇasya rājñaḥ mahābhogā bhogijana-praveśyā gandharva-yakṣaiḥ apsarobhiḥ ca juṣṭā.
tatra aham tvā hastinam yātayiṣye.
18. Gautama said: "The Mandakini river, belonging to King Vaiśravaṇa, offers great enjoyment and is accessible to pleasure-loving beings. It is frequented by Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Apsaras. There, I will send the elephant to you."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अतिथिव्रताः सुव्रता ये जना वै प्रतिश्रयं ददति ब्राह्मणेभ्यः ।
शिष्टाशिनः संविभज्याश्रितांश्च मन्दाकिनीं तेऽपि विभूषयन्ति ॥१९॥
19. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
atithivratāḥ suvratā ye janā vai; pratiśrayaṁ dadati brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ,
śiṣṭāśinaḥ saṁvibhajyāśritāṁśca; mandākinīṁ te'pi vibhūṣayanti.
19. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | atithi-vratāḥ
su-vratāḥ ye janāḥ vai pratiśrayam dadati
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ | śiṣṭāśinaḥ saṃvibhajya
āśritān ca mandākinīm te api vibhūṣayanti
19. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca vai ye janāḥ atithi-vratāḥ su-vratāḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ pratiśrayam dadati śiṣṭāśinaḥ āśritān ca saṃvibhajya,
te api mandākinīm vibhūṣayanti.
19. Dhritarashtra said: "Indeed, those people who are devoted to their guests, observe good vows, give shelter to Brahmins, and eat only after sharing with their dependents - they too adorn the Mandakini (river)."
गौतम उवाच ।
मेरोरग्रे यद्वनं भाति रम्यं सुपुष्पितं किंनरगीतजुष्टम् ।
सुदर्शना यत्र जम्बूर्विशाला तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥२०॥
20. gautama uvāca ,
meroragre yadvanaṁ bhāti ramyaṁ; supuṣpitaṁ kiṁnaragītajuṣṭam ,
sudarśanā yatra jambūrviśālā; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
20. gautamaḥ uvāca | meroḥ agre yat vanam
bhāti ramyam supuṣpitam kinnara-gīta-juṣṭam
| sudarśanā yatra jambūḥ
viśālā tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
20. gautamaḥ uvāca yatra meroḥ agre ramyam supuṣpitam kinnara-gīta-juṣṭam yat vanam bhāti,
yatra sudarśanā jambūḥ viśālā,
tatra aham tvā hastinam yātayiṣye.
20. Gautama said: "Where the charming, well-flowered forest at the peak of Mount Meru shines, frequented by the songs of Kinnaras, and where there is a vast Jambu tree named Sudarśanā - there, I will send the elephant to you."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ये ब्राह्मणा मृदवः सत्यशीला बहुश्रुताः सर्वभूताभिरामाः ।
येऽधीयन्ते सेतिहासं पुराणं मध्वाहुत्या जुह्वति च द्विजेभ्यः ॥२१॥
21. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye brāhmaṇā mṛdavaḥ satyaśīlā; bahuśrutāḥ sarvabhūtābhirāmāḥ ,
ye'dhīyante setihāsaṁ purāṇaṁ; madhvāhutyā juhvati ca dvijebhyaḥ.
21. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ye brāhmaṇāḥ mṛdavaḥ
satyaśīlāḥ bahuśrutāḥ sarvabhūtābhirāmāḥ
ye adhīyante saitihāsam purāṇam
madhvāhutyā juhvati ca dvijebhyaḥ
21. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Those brahmins who are gentle, of truthful character, highly learned, and pleasing to all beings; who study the Purāṇas along with Itihāsa; and who make honey offerings into the sacred fire and give to the twice-born (dvija)..."
तथाविधानामेष लोको महर्षे परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ।
यद्विद्यते विदितं स्थानमस्ति तद्ब्रूहि त्वं त्वरितो ह्येष यामि ॥२२॥
22. tathāvidhānāmeṣa loko maharṣe; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra ,
yadvidyate viditaṁ sthānamasti; tadbrūhi tvaṁ tvarito hyeṣa yāmi.
22. tathāvidhānām eṣa lokaḥ maharṣe
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
yat vidyate viditam sthānam asti
tat brūhi tvam tvaritaḥ hi eṣa yāmi
22. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O great sage, this world (or supreme state) is attained by such people; Dhṛtarāṣṭra (I) will not be there. Whatever known place exists, tell me that, for I will go there swiftly."
गौतम उवाच ।
सुपुष्पितं किंनरराजजुष्टं प्रियं वनं नन्दनं नारदस्य ।
गन्धर्वाणामप्सरसां च सद्म तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥२३॥
23. gautama uvāca ,
supuṣpitaṁ kiṁnararājajuṣṭaṁ; priyaṁ vanaṁ nandanaṁ nāradasya ,
gandharvāṇāmapsarasāṁ ca sadma; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
23. gautama uvāca supuṣpitam kinnararājajuṣṭam
priyam vanam nandanam nāradasya
gandharvāṇām apsarasām ca sadma
tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
23. Gautama said: "There is a well-flowered, lovely forest, frequented by the king of the Kinnaras, Nārada's Nandana (garden), and it is the abode of the Gandharvas and Apsarases. There, I will cause you to go as an elephant."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ये नृत्तगीतकुशला जनाः सदा ह्ययाचमानाः सहिताश्चरन्ति ।
तथाविधानामेष लोको महर्षे परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥२४॥
24. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye nṛttagītakuśalā janāḥ sadā; hyayācamānāḥ sahitāścaranti ,
tathāvidhānāmeṣa loko maharṣe; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
24. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ye nṛttagītakuśalāḥ
janāḥ sadā hi ayācamānāḥ sahitāḥ
caranti tathāvidhānām eṣa lokaḥ maharṣe
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
24. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "What about those people skilled in dance and song, who always wander together without begging? O great sage, this world (or supreme state) is attained by such people, but Dhṛtarāṣṭra (I) will not be there."
गौतम उवाच ।
यत्रोत्तराः कुरवो भान्ति रम्या देवैः सार्धं मोदमाना नरेन्द्र ।
यत्राग्नियौनाश्च वसन्ति विप्रा ह्ययोनयः पर्वतयोनयश्च ॥२५॥
25. gautama uvāca ,
yatrottarāḥ kuravo bhānti ramyā; devaiḥ sārdhaṁ modamānā narendra ,
yatrāgniyaunāśca vasanti viprā; hyayonayaḥ parvatayonayaśca.

bhānti yatra agniyonāḥ ca ayonayaḥ
ca parvatayonayaḥ hi viprāḥ vasanti
25. Gautama said: O King, where the charming Uttarakurus gleam, rejoicing with the gods; where Brahmins, fire-born, reside, as do those who are not womb-born and those who are mountain-born.
यत्र शक्रो वर्षति सर्वकामान्यत्र स्त्रियः कामचाराश्चरन्ति ।
यत्र चेर्ष्या नास्ति नारीनराणां तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥२६॥
26. yatra śakro varṣati sarvakāmā;nyatra striyaḥ kāmacārāścaranti ,
yatra cerṣyā nāsti nārīnarāṇāṁ; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.

yatra ca īrṣyā na asti nārīnarāṇām
| tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye

yatra ca nārīnarāṇām īrṣyā na asti
tatra aham tvā hastinam yātayiṣye
26. where Śakra (Indra) showers down all desires, and where women move about as they please; where there is no jealousy among women and men - there I shall bring an elephant for you.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ये सर्वभूतेषु निवृत्तकामा अमांसादा न्यस्तदण्डाश्चरन्ति ।
न हिंसन्ति स्थावरं जङ्गमं च भूतानां ये सर्वभूतात्मभूताः ॥२७॥
27. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye sarvabhūteṣu nivṛttakāmā; amāṁsādā nyastadaṇḍāścaranti ,
na hiṁsanti sthāvaraṁ jaṅgamaṁ ca; bhūtānāṁ ye sarvabhūtātmabhūtāḥ.
27. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | ye sarvabhūteṣu
nivṛttakāmāḥ amāṃsādāḥ nyastadaṇḍāḥ
caranti | na hiṃsanti sthāvaram jaṅgamam
ca bhūtānām ye sarvabhūtātmabhūtāḥ
27. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ye sarvabhūteṣu
nivṛttakāmāḥ amāṃsādāḥ nyastadaṇḍāḥ
caranti ye ca sarvabhūtātmabhūtāḥ
bhūtānām sthāvaram jaṅgamam ca na hiṃsanti
27. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Those whose desires have ceased towards all beings, who do not eat meat, and who wander having laid down the rod (of violence); they do not harm either the stationary or the moving among creatures, for they have become the very inner self (ātman) of all beings.
निराशिषो निर्ममा वीतरागा लाभालाभे तुल्यनिन्दाप्रशंसाः ।
तथाविधानामेष लोको महर्षे परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥२८॥
28. nirāśiṣo nirmamā vītarāgā; lābhālābhe tulyanindāpraśaṁsāḥ ,
tathāvidhānāmeṣa loko maharṣe; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
28. nirāśiṣaḥ nirmamāḥ vītarāgāḥ
lābhālābhe tulyanindāpraśaṃsāḥ |
tathāvidhānām eṣa lokaḥ maharṣe
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
28. maharṣe nirāśiṣaḥ nirmamāḥ vītarāgāḥ
lābhālābhe tulyanindāpraśaṃsāḥ
tathāvidhānām eṣa param lokaḥ gantā
(asti) dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra (gantā)
28. Those who are free from desires, devoid of possessiveness, and liberated from attachments; who are equanimous in gain and loss, in blame and praise - O great sage, for such individuals is this supreme world; Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not reach there.
गौतम उवाच ।
ततः परं भान्ति लोकाः सनातनाः सुपुण्यगन्धा निर्मला वीतशोकाः ।
सोमस्य राज्ञः सदने महात्मनस्तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥२९॥
29. gautama uvāca ,
tataḥ paraṁ bhānti lokāḥ sanātanāḥ; supuṇyagandhā nirmalā vītaśokāḥ ,
somasya rājñaḥ sadane mahātmana;statra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.

sanātanāḥ supuṇyagandhā nirmalā
vītaśokāḥ somasya rājñaḥ sadane mahātmanaḥ
tatra tu aham hastinam yātayiṣye

supuṇyagandhā nirmalā vītaśokāḥ lokāḥ
bhānti mahātmanaḥ rājñaḥ somasya
sadane tatra tu aham hastinam yātayiṣye
29. Gautama said: Beyond that, the eternal, pure, sorrowless realms, fragrant with great merit, shine brightly in the abode of the great-souled King Soma. There, I will indeed send the elephant.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ये दानशीला न प्रतिगृह्णते सदा न चाप्यर्थानाददते परेभ्यः ।
येषामदेयमर्हते नास्ति किंचित्सर्वातिथ्याः सुप्रसादा जनाश्च ॥३०॥
30. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye dānaśīlā na pratigṛhṇate sadā; na cāpyarthānādadate parebhyaḥ ,
yeṣāmadeyamarhate nāsti kiṁci;tsarvātithyāḥ suprasādā janāśca.
30. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ye dānaśīlāḥ na
pratigṛhṇate sadā na ca api arthān ādaddate
parebhyaḥ yeṣām adeyam arhate na asti
kiṃcit sarvātithyāḥ suprasādāḥ janāḥ ca
30. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ye dānaśīlāḥ sadā na
pratigṛhṇate ca api parebhyaḥ arthān
na ādaddate yeṣām arhate adeyam kiṃcit
na asti sarvātithyāḥ suprasādāḥ janāḥ ca
30. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Those who are by nature ever generous, who neither accept gifts nor take wealth from others, and for whom there is nothing that should not be given to a deserving person; such people are hospitable to all and very benevolent.
ये क्षन्तारो नाभिजल्पन्ति चान्याञ्शक्ता भूत्वा सततं पुण्यशीलाः ।
तथाविधानामेष लोको महर्षे परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥३१॥
31. ye kṣantāro nābhijalpanti cānyā;ñśaktā bhūtvā satataṁ puṇyaśīlāḥ ,
tathāvidhānāmeṣa loko maharṣe; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
31. ye kṣantāraḥ na abhijalpanti ca
anyān śaktāḥ bhūtvā satatam puṇyaśīlāḥ
tathāvidhānām eṣaḥ lokaḥ maharṣe
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
31. ye kṣantāraḥ ca anyān na abhijalpanti
śaktāḥ bhūtvā satatam puṇyaśīlāḥ
maharṣe tathāvidhānām eṣaḥ lokaḥ
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
31. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: Those who are forgiving and do not speak ill of others, even when they possess strength, being constantly of virtuous conduct – O great sage, for such persons, this realm will attain the supreme state. Dhṛtarāṣṭra (I) will not be there.
गौतम उवाच ।
ततः परं भान्ति लोकाः सनातना विरजसो वितमस्का विशोकाः ।
आदित्यस्य सुमहान्तः सुवृत्तास्तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥३२॥
32. gautama uvāca ,
tataḥ paraṁ bhānti lokāḥ sanātanā; virajaso vitamaskā viśokāḥ ,
ādityasya sumahāntaḥ suvṛttā;statra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
32. gautama uvāca tataḥ param bhānti
lokāḥ sanātanāḥ virajasaḥ vitamaskāḥ
viśokāḥ ādityasya sumahāntaḥ suvṛttāḥ
tatra tu aham hastinam yātayiṣye
32. gautama uvāca tataḥ param sanātanāḥ
virajasaḥ vitamaskāḥ viśokāḥ sumahāntaḥ
suvṛttāḥ ādityasya lokāḥ bhānti
tatra tu aham hastinam yātayiṣye
32. Gautama said: Beyond that, the eternal realms shine brightly, free from passion, free from darkness, and free from sorrow. These are the very great and perfectly formed realms of the Sun-god. There, I will indeed send the elephant.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
स्वाध्यायशीला गुरुशुश्रूषणे रतास्तपस्विनः सुव्रताः सत्यसंधाः ।
आचार्याणामप्रतिकूलभाषिणो नित्योत्थिता गुरुकर्मस्वचोद्याः ॥३३॥
33. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
svādhyāyaśīlā guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratā;stapasvinaḥ suvratāḥ satyasaṁdhāḥ ,
ācāryāṇāmapratikūlabhāṣiṇo; nityotthitā gurukarmasvacodyāḥ.
33. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca svādhyāyaśīlāḥ
guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratāḥ tapasvinaḥ suvratāḥ
satyasaṃdhāḥ ācāryāṇām apratikūlabhāṣiṇaḥ
nityotthitāḥ gurukarmasu acodyāḥ
33. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca svādhyāyaśīlāḥ
guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratāḥ tapasvinaḥ suvratāḥ
satyasaṃdhāḥ ācāryāṇām apratikūlabhāṣiṇaḥ
nityotthitāḥ gurukarmasu acodyāḥ
33. Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke: "Those who are devoted to self-study (svādhyāya), engaged in serving their spiritual teachers (guru), practicing asceticism (tapas), observing excellent vows, truthful in their pledges, who do not speak unfavorably to their preceptors, are always diligent, and do not need to be prompted in their duties towards their teachers - "
तथाविधानामेष लोको महर्षे विशुद्धानां भावितवाङ्मतीनाम् ।
सत्ये स्थितानां वेदविदां महात्मनां परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥३४॥
34. tathāvidhānāmeṣa loko maharṣe; viśuddhānāṁ bhāvitavāṅmatīnām ,
satye sthitānāṁ vedavidāṁ mahātmanāṁ; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
34. tathāvidhānām eṣaḥ lokaḥ maharṣe
viśuddhānām bhāvitavāṅmatīnām satye
sthitānām vedavidām mahātmanām
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
34. maharṣe tathāvidhānām viśuddhānām bhāvitavāṅmatīnām satye sthitānām vedavidām mahātmanām eṣaḥ lokaḥ (asti).
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tatra param na gantā.
34. Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke: "O great sage, this realm belongs to such pure individuals, whose speech and minds are refined, who are established in truth, who are knowers of the Vedas, and who are great-souled (mahātman). Dhṛtarāṣṭra, however, will not attain that supreme destination."
गौतम उवाच ।
ततः परे भान्ति लोकाः सनातनाः सुपुण्यगन्धा विरजा विशोकाः ।
वरुणस्य राज्ञः सदने महात्मनस्तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥३५॥
35. gautama uvāca ,
tataḥ pare bhānti lokāḥ sanātanāḥ; supuṇyagandhā virajā viśokāḥ ,
varuṇasya rājñaḥ sadane mahātmana;statra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.

tatra mahātmanaḥ rājñaḥ varuṇasya sadane tu aham hastinam yātayiṣye.
35. Gautama said: "Beyond that, eternal realms shine, possessing the fragrance of great merit, free from impurity, and free from sorrow. There, in the abode of the great-souled (mahātman) King Varuṇa, I shall indeed dispatch the elephant."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
चातुर्मास्यैर्ये यजन्ते जनाः सदा तथेष्टीनां दशशतं प्राप्नुवन्ति ।
ये चाग्निहोत्रं जुह्वति श्रद्दधाना यथान्यायं त्रीणि वर्षाणि विप्राः ॥३६॥
36. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
cāturmāsyairye yajante janāḥ sadā; tatheṣṭīnāṁ daśaśataṁ prāpnuvanti ,
ye cāgnihotraṁ juhvati śraddadhānā; yathānyāyaṁ trīṇi varṣāṇi viprāḥ.
36. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca cāturmāsyaiḥ ye yajante
janāḥ sadā tathā iṣṭīnām daśaśatam
prāpnuvanti ye ca agnihotram juhvati
śraddadhānāḥ yathānyāyam trīṇi varṣāṇi viprāḥ
36. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ye janāḥ sadā cāturmāsyaiḥ yajante,
te tathā iṣṭīnām daśaśatam prāpnuvanti.
ye ca viprāḥ śraddadhānāḥ yathānyāyam trīṇi varṣāṇi agnihotram juhvati (te api prāpnuvanti)
36. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Those people who consistently perform Vedic rituals (yajña) with the Cāturmāsya observances achieve the benefit of a thousand such rituals. And those Brahmins (viprā) who, filled with faith (śraddhā), properly offer the Agnihotra (Vedic fire ritual) for three years - "
स्वदारिणां धर्मधुरे महात्मनां यथोचिते वर्त्मनि सुस्थितानाम् ।
धर्मात्मनामुद्वहतां गतिं तां परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥३७॥
37. svadāriṇāṁ dharmadhure mahātmanāṁ; yathocite vartmani susthitānām ,
dharmātmanāmudvahatāṁ gatiṁ tāṁ; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.

dharmātmanām udvahatām gatim tām
param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
37. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra gantā tām

susthitānām yathocite vartmani
37. Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not reach that supreme destination which is attained by great-souled individuals who are devoted to their own families, who uphold the burden of natural law (dharma), whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteous, and who are well-established on the proper path.
गौतम उवाच ।
इन्द्रस्य लोका विरजा विशोका दुरन्वयाः काङ्क्षिता मानवानाम् ।
तस्याहं ते भवने भूरितेजसो राजन्निमं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥३८॥
38. gautama uvāca ,
indrasya lokā virajā viśokā; duranvayāḥ kāṅkṣitā mānavānām ,
tasyāhaṁ te bhavane bhūritejaso; rājannimaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
38. gautamaḥ uvāca indrasya lokāḥ virajāḥ
viśokāḥ duranvayāḥ kāṅkṣitāḥ
mānavānām tasya aham te bhavane bhūritejasaḥ
rājan imam hastinam yātayiṣye
38. gautamaḥ uvāca.
rājan bhūritejasaḥ,
mānavānām kāṅkṣitāḥ duranvayāḥ virajāḥ viśokāḥ indrasya lokāḥ santi.
aham tasya te bhavane imam hastinam yātayiṣye
38. Gautama said: "The worlds of Indra are pure, free from sorrow, difficult for humans to attain, yet deeply desired by them. O King of great splendor, in your abode, I shall send this elephant (to those worlds)."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
शतवर्षजीवी यश्च शूरो मनुष्यो वेदाध्यायी यश्च यज्वाप्रमत्तः ।
एते सर्वे शक्रलोकं व्रजन्ति परं गन्ता धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥३९॥
39. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
śatavarṣajīvī yaśca śūro manuṣyo; vedādhyāyī yaśca yajvāpramattaḥ ,
ete sarve śakralokaṁ vrajanti; paraṁ gantā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
39. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca śatavarṣajīvī yaḥ ca
śūraḥ manuṣyaḥ vedādhyāyī yaḥ ca yajvā
apramattaḥ ete sarve śakralokam
vrajanti param gantā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
39. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca.
yaḥ ca manuṣyaḥ śatavarṣajīvī śūraḥ vedādhyāyī ca apramattaḥ yajvā,
ete sarve śakralokam vrajanti.
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra param gantā
39. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "The man who lives for a hundred years, who is brave, who studies the Vedas, and who is a vigilant performer of Vedic rituals (yajña) – all these go to Indra's world. Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not go to that supreme destination."
गौतम उवाच ।
प्राजापत्याः सन्ति लोका महान्तो नाकस्य पृष्ठे पुष्कला वीतशोकाः ।
मनीषिताः सर्वलोकोद्भवानां तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥४०॥
40. gautama uvāca ,
prājāpatyāḥ santi lokā mahānto; nākasya pṛṣṭhe puṣkalā vītaśokāḥ ,
manīṣitāḥ sarvalokodbhavānāṁ; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
40. gautamaḥ uvāca prājāpatyāḥ santi lokāḥ
mahāntaḥ nākasya pṛṣṭhe puṣkalāḥ
vītaśokāḥ manīṣitāḥ sarvalokodbhavānām
tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
40. gautamaḥ uvāca.
nākasya pṛṣṭhe mahāntaḥ puṣkalāḥ vītaśokāḥ sarvalokodbhavānām manīṣitāḥ prājāpatyāḥ lokāḥ santi.
tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye
40. Gautama said: "There are great worlds of Prajāpati on the summit of heaven, abundant, free from sorrow, and desired by all beings. To those worlds, indeed, I shall send the elephant."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ये राजानो राजसूयाभिषिक्ता धर्मात्मानो रक्षितारः प्रजानाम् ।
ये चाश्वमेधावभृथाप्लुताङ्गास्तेषां लोका धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र ॥४१॥
41. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ye rājāno rājasūyābhiṣiktā; dharmātmāno rakṣitāraḥ prajānām ,
ye cāśvamedhāvabhṛthāplutāṅgā;steṣāṁ lokā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra.
41. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ye rājānaḥ
rājasūyābhiṣiktāḥ dharmātmānaḥ rakṣitāraḥ
prajānām ye ca aśvamedhāvabhṛthāplutāṅgāḥ
teṣām lokāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ na tatra
41. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca ye rājānaḥ rājasūyābhiṣiktāḥ dharmātmānaḥ prajānām rakṣitāraḥ,
ye ca aśvamedhāvabhṛthāplutāṅgāḥ,
teṣām lokāḥ (santi); dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tatra na (asti)
41. Dhritarashtra said: "Those kings who were consecrated with the rājasūya (Vedic ritual), whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is righteousness, and who are protectors of their subjects; and those whose bodies have been purified by the concluding bath of the aśvamedha (Vedic ritual) – for them are the celestial realms. Dhritarashtra is not found there."
गौतम उवाच ।
ततः परं भान्ति लोकाः सनातनाः सुपुण्यगन्धा विरजा वीतशोकाः ।
तस्मिन्नहं दुर्लभे त्वाप्रधृष्ये गवां लोके हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥४२॥
42. gautama uvāca ,
tataḥ paraṁ bhānti lokāḥ sanātanāḥ; supuṇyagandhā virajā vītaśokāḥ ,
tasminnahaṁ durlabhe tvāpradhṛṣye; gavāṁ loke hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
42. gautamaḥ uvāca tataḥ param bhānti
lokāḥ sanātanāḥ supuṇyagandhāḥ virajāḥ
vītaśokāḥ tasmin aham durlabhe
tvāpradhṛṣye gavām loke hastinam yātayiṣye
42. gautamaḥ uvāca tataḥ param lokāḥ
sanātanāḥ supuṇyagandhāḥ virajāḥ vītaśokāḥ
bhānti tasmin durlabhe tvāpradhṛṣye
gavām loke aham hastinam yātayiṣye
42. Gautama said: "Beyond that, eternal worlds shine, imbued with the fragrance of abundant merit, free from impurity and sorrow. In that world of cows (goloka), which is difficult to attain and unassailable (even by you), I will send an elephant (i.e., make a great and powerful contribution)."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यो गोसहस्री शतदः समां समां यो गोशती दश दद्याच्च शक्त्या ।
तथा दशभ्यो यश्च दद्यादिहैकां पञ्चभ्यो वा दानशीलस्तथैकाम् ॥४३॥
43. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yo gosahasrī śatadaḥ samāṁ samāṁ; yo gośatī daśa dadyācca śaktyā ,
tathā daśabhyo yaśca dadyādihaikāṁ; pañcabhyo vā dānaśīlastathaikām.
43. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca yaḥ gosahasrī śatadaḥ
samām samām yaḥ gośatī daśa dadyāt ca
śaktyā tathā daśabhyaḥ yaḥ ca dadyāt
iha ekām pañcabhyaḥ vā dānaśīlaḥ tathā ekām
43. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca yaḥ gosahasrī śatadaḥ samām samām (dadāti),
yaḥ ca śaktyā gośatī daśa dadyāt,
tathā yaḥ ca iha daśabhyaḥ ekām dadyāt,
vā pañcabhyaḥ tathā ekām (dadāti),
(saḥ) dānaśīlaḥ (bhavati)
43. Dhritarashtra said: "He who gives a thousand cows, and a hundred (cows) year after year; and he who gives a hundred and ten cows according to his ability; likewise, he who gives one (cow) to ten (deserving recipients) here, or one (cow) to five (recipients) – such a one is truly generous."
ये जीर्यन्ते ब्रह्मचर्येण विप्रा ब्राह्मीं वाचं परिरक्षन्ति चैव ।
मनस्विनस्तीर्थयात्रापरायणास्ते तत्र मोदन्ति गवां विमाने ॥४४॥
44. ye jīryante brahmacaryeṇa viprā; brāhmīṁ vācaṁ parirakṣanti caiva ,
manasvinastīrthayātrāparāyaṇā;ste tatra modanti gavāṁ vimāne.

44. ye viprāḥ brahmacaryeṇa jīryante,

(ye) manasvinaḥ tīrthayātrāparāyaṇāḥ (santi),
te tatra gavām vimāne modanti
44. Those learned persons (vipras) who live their lives (grow old) observing celibacy (brahmacarya), and who diligently preserve the sacred Vedic speech; those high-minded ones who are dedicated to pilgrimage – they rejoice there, in the celestial vehicle (vimāna) of cows (i.e., the world attained through cow donation).
प्रभासं मानसं पुण्यं पुष्कराणि महत्सरः ।
पुण्यं च नैमिषं तीर्थं बाहुदां करतोयिनीम् ॥४५॥
45. prabhāsaṁ mānasaṁ puṇyaṁ puṣkarāṇi mahatsaraḥ ,
puṇyaṁ ca naimiṣaṁ tīrthaṁ bāhudāṁ karatoyinīm.

45. The sacred Prabhāsa, the holy Manasa lake, the Pushkara lakes, and the great lake (Mahatsara); also the sacred Naimiṣa (tīrtha), the Bāhudā river, and the Karatoyini river.
गयां गयशिरश्चैव विपाशां स्थूलवालुकाम् ।
तूष्णींगङ्गां दशगङ्गां महाह्रदमथापि च ॥४६॥
46. gayāṁ gayaśiraścaiva vipāśāṁ sthūlavālukām ,
tūṣṇīṁgaṅgāṁ daśagaṅgāṁ mahāhradamathāpi ca.

46. Gayā and Gayaśiras, the Vipāśā river and Sthūlavālukā; furthermore, the Tūṣṇīgaṅgā, the Daśagaṅgā, and also the great lake (Mahāhrada).
गौतमीं कौशिकीं पाकां महात्मानो धृतव्रताः ।
सरस्वतीदृषद्वत्यौ यमुनां ये प्रयान्ति च ॥४७॥
47. gautamīṁ kauśikīṁ pākāṁ mahātmāno dhṛtavratāḥ ,
sarasvatīdṛṣadvatyau yamunāṁ ye prayānti ca.

तत्र ते दिव्यसंस्थाना दिव्यमाल्यधराः शिवाः ।
प्रयान्ति पुण्यगन्धाढ्या धृतराष्ट्रो न तत्र वै ॥४८॥
48. tatra te divyasaṁsthānā divyamālyadharāḥ śivāḥ ,
prayānti puṇyagandhāḍhyā dhṛtarāṣṭro na tatra vai.

48. There, those great-souled persons, possessing divine forms, wearing divine garlands, auspicious, and endowed with sacred fragrance, attain (a higher state). Dhṛtarāṣṭra, however, will certainly not go there.
गौतम उवाच ।
यत्र शीतभयं नास्ति न चोष्णभयमण्वपि ।
न क्षुत्पिपासे न ग्लानिर्न दुःखं न सुखं तथा ॥४९॥
49. gautama uvāca ,
yatra śītabhayaṁ nāsti na coṣṇabhayamaṇvapi ,
na kṣutpipāse na glānirna duḥkhaṁ na sukhaṁ tathā.

49. Gautama said: Where there is no fear of cold, nor even the slightest fear of heat; neither hunger nor thirst, nor weariness, nor sorrow, nor happiness.
न द्वेष्यो न प्रियः कश्चिन्न बन्धुर्न रिपुस्तथा ।
न जरामरणे वापि न पुण्यं न च पातकम् ॥५०॥
50. na dveṣyo na priyaḥ kaścinna bandhurna ripustathā ,
na jarāmaraṇe vāpi na puṇyaṁ na ca pātakam.
50. na dveṣyaḥ na priyaḥ kaścid na bandhuḥ na ripuḥ
tathā na jarāmaraṇe vā api na puṇyam na ca pātakam

50. Neither is there anyone to be hated nor anyone dear; neither a relative nor an enemy. There is no old age or death, nor any merit (puṇya) or sin (pātaka).
तस्मिन्विरजसि स्फीते प्रज्ञासत्त्वव्यवस्थिते ।
स्वयंभुभवने पुण्ये हस्तिनं मे यतिष्यति ॥५१॥
51. tasminvirajasi sphīte prajñāsattvavyavasthite ,
svayaṁbhubhavane puṇye hastinaṁ me yatiṣyati.

svayambhubhavane puṇye hastinam me yatiṣyati

51. In that stainless, expansive, and pure abode of the self-born (brahman), which is established in discerning consciousness and pure existence, (one) will strive for my elephant.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
निर्मुक्ताः सर्वसङ्गेभ्यो कृतात्मानो यतव्रताः ।
अध्यात्मयोगसंस्थाने युक्ताः स्वर्गगतिं गताः ॥५२॥
52. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
nirmuktāḥ sarvasaṅgebhyo kṛtātmāno yatavratāḥ ,
adhyātmayogasaṁsthāne yuktāḥ svargagatiṁ gatāḥ.

52. Dhritarashtra said: Those who are completely liberated from all attachments, whose inner self (ātman) is perfected, who have disciplined vows, and who are devoted to the practice of spiritual discipline (adhyātmayoga), they attain the heavenly realm.
ते ब्रह्मभवनं पुण्यं प्राप्नुवन्तीह सात्त्विकाः ।
न तत्र धृतराष्ट्रस्ते शक्यो द्रष्टुं महामुने ॥५३॥
53. te brahmabhavanaṁ puṇyaṁ prāpnuvantīha sāttvikāḥ ,
na tatra dhṛtarāṣṭraste śakyo draṣṭuṁ mahāmune.
53. te brahma-bhavanam puṇyam prāpnuvanti iha sāttvikāḥ
| na tatra dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ te śakyaḥ draṣṭum mahāmune
53. iha sāttvikāḥ te puṇyam brahma-bhavanam prāpnuvanti
mahāmune tatra dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ te draṣṭum na śakyaḥ
53. Those who are of a pure (sāttvika) nature attain the sacred abode of (brahman) in this world. O great sage (muni), Dhritarashtra cannot be seen by you there.
गौतम उवाच ।
रथन्तरं यत्र बृहच्च गीयते यत्र वेदी पुण्डरीकैः स्तृणोति ।
यत्रोपयाति हरिभिः सोमपीथी तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये ॥५४॥
54. gautama uvāca ,
rathantaraṁ yatra bṛhacca gīyate; yatra vedī puṇḍarīkaiḥ stṛṇoti ,
yatropayāti haribhiḥ somapīthī; tatra tvāhaṁ hastinaṁ yātayiṣye.
54. gautamaḥ uvāca | rathantaram yatra bṛhat
ca gīyate yatra vedī puṇḍarīkaiḥ
stṛṇoti | yatra upa-yāti haribhiḥ soma-pīthī
tatra tvā aham hastinam yātayiṣye

stṛṇoti yatra soma-pīthī haribhiḥ upa-yāti
tatra aham tvā hastinam yātayiṣye
54. Gautama said: Where the Rathantara and Bṛhat (chants) are sung, where the (Vedic ritual) altar is strewn with white lotuses, and where the Soma-drinker (Indra) approaches with his bay horses, there I will drive you, the elephant.
बुध्यामि त्वां वृत्रहणं शतक्रतुं व्यतिक्रमन्तं भुवनानि विश्वा ।
कच्चिन्न वाचा वृजिनं कदाचिदकार्षं ते मनसोऽभिषङ्गात् ॥५५॥
55. budhyāmi tvāṁ vṛtrahaṇaṁ śatakratuṁ; vyatikramantaṁ bhuvanāni viśvā ,
kaccinna vācā vṛjinaṁ kadāci;dakārṣaṁ te manaso'bhiṣaṅgāt.
55. budhyāmi tvām vṛtra-hanam śata-kratum
vyati-kramantam bhuvanāni
viśvā | kaccit na vācā vṛjinam kadācit
akārṣam te manasaḥ abhiṣaṅgāt
55. aham tvām vṛtra-hanam śata-kratum
viśvā bhuvanāni vyati-kramantam
budhyāmi kaccit kadācit te manasaḥ
abhiṣaṅgāt vācā vṛjinam na akārṣam
55. I know you to be the slayer of Vṛtra, the lord of a hundred powers (śatakratu), traversing all the worlds. I hope I have not, at any time, by my words, committed any offense against your mind due to my intense preoccupation (abhiṣaṅga).
शक्र उवाच ।
यस्मादिमं लोकपथं प्रजानामन्वागमं पदवादे गजस्य ।
तस्माद्भवान्प्रणतं मानुशास्तु ब्रवीषि यत्तत्करवाणि सर्वम् ॥५६॥
56. śakra uvāca ,
yasmādimaṁ lokapathaṁ prajānā;manvāgamaṁ padavāde gajasya ,
tasmādbhavānpraṇataṁ mānuśāstu; bravīṣi yattatkaravāṇi sarvam.
56. śakraḥ uvāca | yasmāt aham prajānām
gajasya pada-vāde imam loka-patham anv-āgamam
| tasmāt bhavān praṇatam mā
anu-śāstu | yat bravīṣi tat karavāṇi sarvam
56. śakraḥ uvāca yasmāt aham gajasya

anv-āgamam tasmāt bhavān praṇatam mā
anu-śāstu yat bravīṣi tat sarvam karavāṇi
56. Śakra said: Since I followed this path of the world, of all beings, investigating the elephant's footprints, therefore, please instruct me, who am humble. Whatever you command, I will do all of it.
गौतम उवाच ।
श्वेतं करेणुं मम पुत्रनागं यं मेऽहार्षीर्दशवर्षाणि बालम् ।
यो मे वने वसतोऽभूद्द्वितीयस्तमेव मे देहि सुरेन्द्र नागम् ॥५७॥
57. gautama uvāca ,
śvetaṁ kareṇuṁ mama putranāgaṁ; yaṁ me'hārṣīrdaśavarṣāṇi bālam ,
yo me vane vasato'bhūddvitīya;stameva me dehi surendra nāgam.

putranāgam yam me ahārṣīḥ daśavarṣāṇi
bālam yaḥ me vane vasataḥ abhūt

57. Gautama said: "O chief of gods, give me back that white elephant, my elephant-son, which you stole from me when he was a ten-year-old calf. He was my companion while I lived in the forest."
शक्र उवाच ।
अयं सुतस्ते द्विजमुख्य नागश्चाघ्रायते त्वामभिवीक्षमाणः ।
पादौ च ते नासिकयोपजिघ्रते श्रेयो मम ध्याहि नमश्च तेऽस्तु ॥५८॥
58. śakra uvāca ,
ayaṁ sutaste dvijamukhya nāga;ścāghrāyate tvāmabhivīkṣamāṇaḥ ,
pādau ca te nāsikayopajighrate; śreyo mama dhyāhi namaśca te'stu.
58. śakraḥ uvāca ayam sutaḥ te dvijamukhya
nāgaḥ ca āghrāyate tvām abhivīkṣamāṇaḥ
pādau ca te nāsikayā upajighrate
śreyaḥ mama dhyāhi namaḥ ca te astu

nāgaḥ tvām abhivīkṣamāṇaḥ ca
āghrāyate te pādau ca nāsikayā upajighrate
mama śreyaḥ dhyāhi te namaḥ ca astu
58. Indra said: "O chief among the twice-born (dvija), this elephant-son of yours, looking at you, is smelling you. He also sniffs your feet with his trunk. Please contemplate my well-being, and salutations be to you."
गौतम उवाच ।
शिवं सदैवेह सुरेन्द्र तुभ्यं ध्यायामि पूजां च सदा प्रयुञ्जे ।
ममापि त्वं शक्र शिवं ददस्व त्वया दत्तं प्रतिगृह्णामि नागम् ॥५९॥
59. gautama uvāca ,
śivaṁ sadaiveha surendra tubhyaṁ; dhyāyāmi pūjāṁ ca sadā prayuñje ,
mamāpi tvaṁ śakra śivaṁ dadasva; tvayā dattaṁ pratigṛhṇāmi nāgam.
59. gautamaḥ uvāca śivam sadā eva iha
surendra tubhyam dhyāyāmi pūjām ca sadā
prayuñje mama api tvam śakra śivam
dadasva tvayā dattam pratigṛhṇāmi nāgam
59. gautamaḥ uvāca surendra iha sadā eva
tubhyam śivam dhyāyāmi ca sadā pūjām
prayuñje śakra tvam api mama śivam
dadasva tvayā dattam nāgam pratigṛhṇāmi
59. Gautama said: "O chief of gods, I always contemplate welfare for you here and always perform worship. O Indra, you also grant welfare to me. I accept the elephant given by you."
शक्र उवाच ।
येषां वेदा निहिता वै गुहायां मनीषिणां सत्त्ववतां महात्मनाम् ।
तेषां त्वयैकेन महात्मनास्मि बुद्धस्तस्मात्प्रीतिमांस्तेऽहमद्य ॥६०॥
60. śakra uvāca ,
yeṣāṁ vedā nihitā vai guhāyāṁ; manīṣiṇāṁ sattvavatāṁ mahātmanām ,
teṣāṁ tvayaikena mahātmanāsmi; buddhastasmātprītimāṁste'hamadya.
60. śakraḥ uvāca yeṣām vedāḥ nihitāḥ vai
guhāyām manīṣiṇām sattvavatām mahātmanām
teṣām tvayā ekena mahātmanā asmi
buddhaḥ tasmāt prītimān te aham adya
60. śakraḥ uvāca yeṣām manīṣiṇām sattvavatām
mahātmanām vedāḥ vai guhāyām
nihitāḥ teṣām tvayā ekena mahātmanā asmi
buddhaḥ tasmāt adya aham te prītimān
60. Indra said: "Among those wise (manīṣin), strong-willed, great (mahātman) souls whose Vedas are indeed deposited in the cave (of the heart), I have been enlightened by you alone, a great (mahātman) soul. Therefore, I am pleased with you today."
हन्तैहि ब्राह्मण क्षिप्रं सह पुत्रेण हस्तिना ।
प्राप्नुहि त्वं शुभाँल्लोकानह्नाय च चिराय च ॥६१॥
61. hantaihi brāhmaṇa kṣipraṁ saha putreṇa hastinā ,
prāpnuhi tvaṁ śubhāँllokānahnāya ca cirāya ca.
61. hanta ehi brāhmaṇa kṣipram saha putreṇa hastinā
prāpnuhi tvam śubhān lokān ahnāya ca cirāya ca
61. tvam brāhmaṇa hanta kṣipram putreṇa hastinā saha ehi.
śubhān lokān ahnāya ca cirāya ca prāpnuhi.
61. Ah, come quickly, O brāhmaṇa, with your son Hastin. May you attain auspicious worlds, both swiftly and for eternity.
भीष्म उवाच ।
स गौतमं पुरस्कृत्य सह पुत्रेण हस्तिना ।
दिवमाचक्रमे वज्री सद्भिः सह दुरासदम् ॥६२॥
62. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sa gautamaṁ puraskṛtya saha putreṇa hastinā ,
divamācakrame vajrī sadbhiḥ saha durāsadam.

hastinā divam ācakrame vajrī sadbhiḥ saha durāsadam
62. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.

62. Bhishma said: The thunderer (Indra), having placed Gautama at the forefront, ascended to the inaccessible heaven together with [Gautama's] son Hastin and the virtuous.
