Vaiśampayana said: Then, the intelligent Sanjaya, son of Gavālgaṇa, who had come from the battle, an eyewitness to everything, and a knower of the past, present, and future...
ध्यायते धृतराष्ट्राय सहसोपेत्य दुःखितः ।
आचष्ट निहतं भीष्मं भरतानाममध्यमम् ॥२॥

...sorrowfully, he suddenly approached Dhritarashtra, who was anxious, and announced that Bhishma, the foremost among the Bharatas, had been slain.
संजयोऽहं महाराज नमस्ते भरतर्षभ ।

"O great king, O best among the Bharatas, I am Sanjaya. Salutations to you. Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, the grandfather of the Bharatas, has been slain."

He, the chief among all warriors, the glory of all archers, the grandfather of the Kurus, now lies today on a bed of arrows.
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य द्यूतं पुत्रस्तवाकरोत् ।
स शेते निहतो राजन्संख्ये भीष्मः शिखण्डिना ॥५॥

5. yasya vīryaṁ samāśritya dyūtaṁ putrastavākarot ,

O King, Bhishma, relying on whose prowess your son undertook the gambling, now lies slain in battle by Shikhandin.

He, the great warrior, who alone, with a single chariot, conquered all the kings assembled in the great battle at the city of Kashi.
जामदग्न्यं रणे राममायोध्य वसुसंभवः ।

7. jāmadagnyaṁ raṇe rāmamāyodhya vasusaṁbhavaḥ ,

He, Bhishma (vasusaṃbhava), after fighting Rama Jamadagnya in battle, was not slain by Jamadagnya (Parashurama); yet, today, he is slain by Shikhandin.
महेन्द्रसदृशः शौर्ये स्थैर्ये च हिमवानिव ।
समुद्र इव गाम्भीर्ये सहिष्णुत्वे धरासमः ॥८॥

He was like Mahendra (Indra) in valor and like the Himalaya in steadfastness. He was like the ocean in profundity, and like the earth in forbearance.
शरदंष्ट्रो धनुर्वक्त्रः खड्गजिह्वो दुरासदः ।
नरसिंहः पिता तेऽद्य पाञ्चाल्येन निपातितः ॥९॥

9. śaradaṁṣṭro dhanurvaktraḥ khaḍgajihvo durāsadaḥ ,

Your father, who was like a man-lion (narasiṃha) with arrows as fangs, a bow as a mouth, and a sword as a tongue, and who was unassailable, has been struck down today by the son of Pāñcāla (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).
पाण्डवानां महत्सैन्यं यं दृष्ट्वोद्यन्तमाहवे ।
प्रवेपत भयोद्विग्नं सिंहं दृष्ट्वेव गोगणः ॥१०॥

10. pāṇḍavānāṁ mahatsainyaṁ yaṁ dṛṣṭvodyantamāhave ,
pravepata bhayodvignaṁ siṁhaṁ dṛṣṭveva gogaṇaḥ.

pāṇḍavānām mahat sainyam yam dṛṣṭvā udyantam āhave
pravepata bhayodvignam siṃham dṛṣṭvā iva gogaṇaḥ
pravepata bhayodvignam siṃham dṛṣṭvā iva gogaṇaḥ

yam āhave udyantam dṛṣṭvā,
pāṇḍavānām mahat sainyam bhayodvignam pravepata,
siṃham dṛṣṭvā iva gogaṇaḥ

siṃham dṛṣṭvā iva gogaṇaḥ
10.
Just as a herd of cows trembles, agitated with fear, upon seeing a lion, so too did the Pāṇḍavas' great army tremble, agitated with fear, upon seeing him (Droṇa) advancing in battle.
परिरक्ष्य स सेनां ते दशरात्रमनीकहा ।
जगामास्तमिवादित्यः कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥११॥

11. parirakṣya sa senāṁ te daśarātramanīkahā ,
jagāmāstamivādityaḥ kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram.

Having protected your army for ten nights, he, the slayer of armies, accomplished a very arduous task (karma) and then departed, like the setting sun.
यः स शक्र इवाक्षोभ्यो वर्षन्बाणान्सहस्रशः ।
जघान युधि योधानामर्बुदं दशभिर्दिनैः ॥१२॥

12. yaḥ sa śakra ivākṣobhyo varṣanbāṇānsahasraśaḥ ,
jaghāna yudhi yodhānāmarbudaṁ daśabhirdinaiḥ.

yaḥ sa śakraḥ iva akṣobhyaḥ varṣan bāṇān sahasraśaḥ

12.
That (Droṇa), who was unassailable like Indra, showering thousands of arrows, slew a myriad of warriors in battle within just ten days.
स शेते निष्टनन्भूमौ वातरुग्ण इव द्रुमः ।
तव दुर्मन्त्रिते राजन्यथा नार्हः स भारत ॥१३॥

O King, O Bhārata, he lies groaning on the ground, like a tree broken by the wind, because of your poor counsel, though he did not deserve such a fate.
