Mārkaṇḍeya said: Mārīca, upon seeing Rāvaṇa arrive, was bewildered. Yet, he honored him with respectful offerings, such as fruits and roots.

That demon, who was skilled in speaking and knew the art of conversation, sat down beside him as he rested and remained seated. He then addressed the eloquent one with humble words.

Your natural complexion seems altered; is everything well in your capital (pura)? Do all your subjects (prakṛti) still serve you as they did before?

O lord of demons, what is your purpose in coming here? Know that it (your task) is as good as accomplished, even if it happens to be exceedingly difficult.

Rāvaṇa recounted all of Rama's deeds to him. But Mārica, having heard everything, spoke to Rāvaṇa concisely.

6.
Enough of this for you; you have encountered Rāma. Indeed, I know his valor. Who, indeed, is capable of enduring the speed of that great soul's (mahātman) arrows?

Indeed, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), he (Rāma) is the very reason for my ascetic life (pravrajyā). By what wicked person has this path of destruction been told to you?

Then Rāvaṇa, full of anger, rebuking him, said: 'If you do not follow our word, even death will certainly befall you.'

Mārīca reflected: 'Death from the distinguished one (Rāma) is preferable. Since death is certainly imminent, I will carry out what he (Rāvaṇa) wishes.'

Then Marīca replied to him, the lord of rākṣasas (rākṣaseśvara): "What assistance am I to render you? I will perform that, even if I am unwilling."

Surely, upon seeing you, Sītā will urge Rāma (Kākutstha) to pursue you. And once Rāma has departed, Sītā will become easy to capture.

Having been addressed in this manner, Maricha, after performing the water ritual (udakam) for himself (ātman), followed Ravana, who was walking ahead, extremely distressed.

Then, both of them, having gone to the hermitage of Rama, whose actions (karma) are effortless, performed everything exactly as it had been previously planned.

16.
But Ravana, transforming himself into an ascetic (yati) - bald, carrying a water pot (kuṇḍī), and holding a triple staff (tridaṇḍadhṛk) - and Maricha, having become a deer (mṛga), both approached that spot.

17.
Maricha, having assumed the form of a deer (mṛgarūpadhṛk), showed himself to Vaidehi (Sita). Urged by fate, she then prompted Rama to pursue it.

To please her, Rāma swiftly took his bow, and placing Lakṣmaṇa for protection, he set off with the desire to catch the deer.

19.
That Rāma, armed with his bow, with a quiver tied, and equipped with a sword, an arm-guard, and a finger-protector, chased the deer, just as Rudra pursued the Tārāmṛga (the Moon).

That demon (Mārīca), by repeatedly disappearing and reappearing, led (Rāma) a great distance away. Then Rāma realized his true nature.

Having recognized him as a night-demon (rākṣasa), the astute Rāghava took an unfailing arrow and killed the one who was in the form of a deer.

Then, struck by Rama's arrow, he (Mārica) imitated Rama's voice and cried out with a pained sound, 'Oh Sita! Oh Lakshmana!'

Then Vaidehī (Sita) heard his piteous voice. She rushed to where the sound came from, and then Lakshmana spoke to her.

Having said this, she (Sita), while weeping, suspected her husband's brother (Lakshmana). Indeed, she was deluded by her feminine nature, even though he was adorned with pure conduct.

Having heard such words, Lakṣmaṇa, who was dear to Rāma (Rāghava) and of good conduct, covered his ears and departed in the direction where Rāma (Rāghava) had gone. That bow-bearer then advanced, following Rāma's footprints.

At that moment, the demon Ravana appeared. Though inauspicious, he assumed a splendid form, like a fire covered by ashes. He was disguised as an ascetic, intending to abduct the blameless woman.

Even if the star-studded sky were to fall, the earth were to break into fragments, and fire were to become cold, I would not abandon Rāma (raghunandana).

Indeed, how could a female elephant, after approaching a great, forest-dwelling elephant whose temples are streaming with rut-fluid, then consort with a mere pig?

Having thus addressed him, she (Sītā) re-entered her hermitage (āśrama). Rāvaṇa, pursuing that beautiful-hipped woman (suśroṇī), then stopped her.
