संजय उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः ।
सुभद्रा पुत्रशोकार्ता विललाप सुदुःखिता ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etacchrutvā vacastasya keśavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
subhadrā putraśokārtā vilalāpa suduḥkhitā.

1. Sanjaya said: Upon hearing these words of the great-souled (mahātman) Keśava (Krishna), Subhadra, overcome by the grief for her son, lamented in extreme distress.
हा पुत्र मम मन्दायाः कथं संयुगमेत्य ह ।
निधनं प्राप्तवांस्तात पितृतुल्यपराक्रमः ॥२॥
2. hā putra mama mandāyāḥ kathaṁ saṁyugametya ha ,
nidhanaṁ prāptavāṁstāta pitṛtulyaparākramaḥ.
2. hā putra mama mandāyāḥ katham saṃyugam etya ha
nidhanam prāptavān tāta pitṛ-tulya-parākramaḥ
2. hā mama mandāyāḥ putra! tāta! pitṛ-tulya-parākramaḥ

2. Alas, my son, of me, the unfortunate one! How, my dear, could you, whose prowess was equal to your father's, having entered battle, meet your demise?
कथमिन्दीवरश्यामं सुदंष्ट्रं चारुलोचनम् ।
मुखं ते दृश्यते वत्स गुण्ठितं रणरेणुना ॥३॥
3. kathamindīvaraśyāmaṁ sudaṁṣṭraṁ cārulocanam ,
mukhaṁ te dṛśyate vatsa guṇṭhitaṁ raṇareṇunā.
3. katham indīvaraśyāmam sudaṃṣṭram cārulocanam
mukham te dṛśyate vatsa guṇṭhitam raṇareṇunā
3. vatsa te indīvaraśyāmam sudaṃṣṭram cārulocanam
mukham raṇareṇunā guṇṭhitam katham dṛśyate
3. My dear child, how is it that your face, which is dark like a blue lotus, with beautiful teeth and lovely eyes, is now seen covered by the dust of battle?
नूनं शूरं निपतितं त्वां पश्यन्त्यनिवर्तिनम् ।
सुशिरोग्रीवबाह्वंसं व्यूढोरस्कं निरूदरम् ॥४॥
4. nūnaṁ śūraṁ nipatitaṁ tvāṁ paśyantyanivartinam ,
suśirogrīvabāhvaṁsaṁ vyūḍhoraskaṁ nirūdaram.
4. nūnam śūram nipatitam tvām paśyanti anivartinam
suśirogrīvabāhvaṃsam vyūḍhoraskam nirūdaram
4. nūnam śūram anivartinam nipatitam suśirogrīvabāhvaṃsam
vyūḍhoraskam nirūdaram tvām paśyanti
4. Surely they behold you, the fallen hero, who never retreated, with your beautiful head, neck, arms, and shoulders, your broad chest, and slender waist.
चारूपचितसर्वाङ्गं स्वक्षं शस्त्रक्षताचितम् ।
भूतानि त्वा निरीक्षन्ते नूनं चन्द्रमिवोदितम् ॥५॥
5. cārūpacitasarvāṅgaṁ svakṣaṁ śastrakṣatācitam ,
bhūtāni tvā nirīkṣante nūnaṁ candramivoditam.
5. cārūpacitasarvāṅgam svakṣam śastrakṣatācitam
bhūtāni tvā nirīkṣante nūnam candram iva uditam
5. nūnam bhūtāni cārūpacitasarvāṅgam svakṣam
śastrakṣatācitam tvā uditam candram iva nirīkṣante
5. Surely, all beings behold you, whose every limb is beautifully proportioned, who has lovely eyes, and is covered with weapon wounds, as if you were the risen moon.
शयनीयं पुरा यस्य स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृतम् ।
भूमावद्य कथं शेषे विप्रविद्धः सुखोचितः ॥६॥
6. śayanīyaṁ purā yasya spardhyāstaraṇasaṁvṛtam ,
bhūmāvadya kathaṁ śeṣe vipraviddhaḥ sukhocitaḥ.
6. śayanīyam purā yasya spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛtam
bhūmau adya katham śeṣe vipraviddhaḥ sukhocitaḥ
6. purā yasya śayanīyam spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛtam
adya bhūmau katham vipraviddhaḥ sukhocitaḥ śeṣe
6. How is it that you, who were formerly accustomed to comfort, and whose bed was covered with a luxurious bedspread, now lie cast aside on the ground?
योऽन्वास्यत पुरा वीरो वरस्त्रीभिर्महाभुजः ।
कथमन्वास्यते सोऽद्य शिवाभिः पतितो मृधे ॥७॥
7. yo'nvāsyata purā vīro varastrībhirmahābhujaḥ ,
kathamanvāsyate so'dya śivābhiḥ patito mṛdhe.
7. yaḥ anvāsyata purā vīraḥ vara-strībhiḥ mahābhujaḥ
katham anvāsyate saḥ adya śivābhiḥ patitaḥ mṛdhe
7. yaḥ mahābhujaḥ vīraḥ purā vara-strībhiḥ anvāsyata
saḥ adya mṛdhe patitaḥ katham śivābhiḥ anvāsyate
7. How is it that he, the mighty-armed hero who was formerly attended upon by excellent women, is today, having fallen in battle, attended upon by jackals?
योऽस्तूयत पुरा हृष्टैः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः ।
सोऽद्य क्रव्याद्गणैर्घोरैर्विनदद्भिरुपास्यते ॥८॥
8. yo'stūyata purā hṛṣṭaiḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ ,
so'dya kravyādgaṇairghorairvinadadbhirupāsyate.
8. yaḥ astūyata purā hṛṣṭaiḥ sūta-māgadha-bandibhiḥ
saḥ adya kravyād-gaṇaiḥ ghoraiḥ vinadadbhiḥ upāsyate
8. purā hṛṣṭaiḥ sūta-māgadha-bandibhiḥ yaḥ astūyata
saḥ adya ghoraiḥ vinadadbhiḥ kravyād-gaṇaiḥ upāsyate
8. He who was formerly eulogized by joyous bards, panegyrists, and eulogists, is today surrounded by dreadful, howling hosts of flesh-eaters.
पाण्डवेषु च नाथेषु वृष्णिवीरेषु चाभिभो ।
पाञ्चालेषु च वीरेषु हतः केनास्यनाथवत् ॥९॥
9. pāṇḍaveṣu ca nātheṣu vṛṣṇivīreṣu cābhibho ,
pāñcāleṣu ca vīreṣu hataḥ kenāsyanāthavat.
9. pāṇḍaveṣu ca nātheṣu vṛṣṇi-vīreṣu ca abhibho
pāñcāleṣu ca vīreṣu hataḥ kena asya anāthavat
9. abhi-bho pāṇḍaveṣu ca nātheṣu vṛṣṇi-vīreṣu ca
pāñcāleṣu ca vīreṣu (satsu) asya kena anāthavat hataḥ
9. O venerable one, with the Pāṇḍavas as his protectors, and the Vṛṣṇi heroes, and the Pāñcāla heroes, by whom was he killed like a helpless person?
अतृप्तदर्शना पुत्र दर्शनस्य तवानघ ।
मन्दभाग्या गमिष्यामि व्यक्तमद्य यमक्षयम् ॥१०॥
10. atṛptadarśanā putra darśanasya tavānagha ,
mandabhāgyā gamiṣyāmi vyaktamadya yamakṣayam.
10. atṛpta-darśanā putra darśanasya tava anagha
manda-bhāgyā gamiṣyāmi vyaktam adya yama-kṣayam
10. putra anagha,
tava darśanasya atṛpta-darśanā (satī) manda-bhāgyā (aham) adya vyaktam yama-kṣayam gamiṣyāmi
10. O sinless son, unsatisfied by the sight of you, I, unfortunate, shall certainly go to the abode of Yama today.
विशालाक्षं सुकेशान्तं चारुवाक्यं सुगन्धि च ।
तव पुत्र कदा भूयो मुखं द्रक्ष्यामि निर्व्रणम् ॥११॥
11. viśālākṣaṁ sukeśāntaṁ cāruvākyaṁ sugandhi ca ,
tava putra kadā bhūyo mukhaṁ drakṣyāmi nirvraṇam.
11. viśālākṣam sukeśāntam cāruvākyam sugandhi ca tava
putra kadā bhūyaḥ mukham drakṣyāmi nirvraṇam
11. putra tava viśālākṣam sukeśāntam cāruvākyam
sugandhi nirvraṇam mukham kadā bhūyaḥ ca drakṣyāmi
11. O my son, when shall I again see your face, with its large eyes, beautiful hair, charming speech, and pleasant fragrance, free from wounds?
धिग्बलं भीमसेनस्य धिक्पार्थस्य धनुष्मताम् ।
धिग्वीर्यं वृष्णिवीराणां पाञ्चालानां च धिग्बलम् ॥१२॥
12. dhigbalaṁ bhīmasenasya dhikpārthasya dhanuṣmatām ,
dhigvīryaṁ vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṁ pāñcālānāṁ ca dhigbalam.
12. dhik balam bhīmasenasya dhik pārthasya dhanuṣmatām
dhik vīryam vṛṣṇivīrāṇām pāñcālānām ca dhik balam
12. bhīmasenasya balam dhik pārthasya dhanuṣmatām dhik
vṛṣṇivīrāṇām vīryam dhik pāñcālānām balam ca dhik
12. Woe to Bhīmasena's strength! Woe to Pārtha's (Arjuna's) prowess among archers! Woe to the valor of the Vṛṣṇi heroes, and woe to the strength of the Pāñcālas!
धिक्केकयांस्तथा चेदीन्मत्स्यांश्चैवाथ सृञ्जयान् ।
ये त्वा रणे गतं वीरं न जानन्ति निपातितम् ॥१३॥
13. dhikkekayāṁstathā cedīnmatsyāṁścaivātha sṛñjayān ,
ye tvā raṇe gataṁ vīraṁ na jānanti nipātitam.
13. dhik kekayān tathā cedīn matsyān ca eva atha sṛñjayān
ye tvā raṇe gatam vīram na jānanti nipātitam
13. dhik kekayān tathā cedīn matsyān ca eva atha sṛñjayān
ye raṇe gatam nipātitam vīram tvā na jānanti
13. Woe to the Kekayas, and similarly to the Cedis, Matsyas, and Sṛñjayas! For they do not realize that you, the brave one, have fallen in battle.
अद्य पश्यामि पृथिवीं शून्यामिव हतत्विषम् ।
अभिमन्युमपश्यन्ती शोकव्याकुललोचना ॥१४॥
14. adya paśyāmi pṛthivīṁ śūnyāmiva hatatviṣam ,
abhimanyumapaśyantī śokavyākulalocanā.
14. adya paśyāmi pṛthivīm śūnyām iva hatatviṣam
abhimanyum apaśyantī śokavyākulalocanā
14. adya abhimanyum apaśyantī śokavyākulalocanā
[aham] pṛthivīm śūnyām hatatviṣam iva paśyāmi
14. Today I see the earth as if empty and devoid of splendor, as my eyes, agitated by sorrow, do not see Abhimanyu.
स्वस्रीयं वासुदेवस्य पुत्रं गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
कथं त्वा विरथं वीरं द्रक्ष्याम्यन्यैर्निपातितम् ॥१५॥
15. svasrīyaṁ vāsudevasya putraṁ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
kathaṁ tvā virathaṁ vīraṁ drakṣyāmyanyairnipātitam.
15. svasrīyam vāsudevasya putram gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ katham
tvā viratham vīram drakṣyāmi anyaiḥ nipātitam
15. vāsudevasya svasrīyam gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ putram vīram
viratham tvā anyaiḥ nipātitam katham drakṣyāmi
15. How can I see you, the nephew of Vasudeva (Krishna) and the son of the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), a hero, dismounted from your chariot and struck down by others?
हा वीर दृष्टो नष्टश्च धनं स्वप्न इवासि मे ।
अहो ह्यनित्यं मानुष्यं जलबुद्बुदचञ्चलम् ॥१६॥
16. hā vīra dṛṣṭo naṣṭaśca dhanaṁ svapna ivāsi me ,
aho hyanityaṁ mānuṣyaṁ jalabudbudacañcalam.
16. hā vīra dṛṣṭaḥ naṣṭaḥ ca dhanaṃ svapnaḥ iva asi
me aho hi anityam mānuṣyam jalabudbudacañcalam
16. hā vīra dṛṣṭaḥ ca naṣṭaḥ me svapnaḥ dhanaṃ iva
asi aho hi mānuṣyam anityam jalabudbudacañcalam
16. Alas, O hero, you appeared and then vanished for me like a dream of wealth. Oh, indeed, human existence is impermanent, as fleeting as a bubble on water.
इमां ते तरुणीं भार्यां त्वदाधिभिरभिप्लुताम् ।
कथं संधारयिष्यामि विवत्सामिव धेनुकाम् ॥१७॥
17. imāṁ te taruṇīṁ bhāryāṁ tvadādhibhirabhiplutām ,
kathaṁ saṁdhārayiṣyāmi vivatsāmiva dhenukām.
17. imām te taruṇīm bhāryām tvat ādhibhiḥ abhiplutām
katham saṃdhārayiṣyāmi vivatsām iva dhenukām
17. katham te imām taruṇīm tvat ādhibhiḥ abhiplutām
bhāryām vivatsām dhenukām iva saṃdhārayiṣyāmi
17. How shall I sustain this young wife of yours, overwhelmed by mental anguish due to you, like a cow whose calf has died?
अहो ह्यकाले प्रस्थानं कृतवानसि पुत्रक ।
विहाय फलकाले मां सुगृद्धां तव दर्शने ॥१८॥
18. aho hyakāle prasthānaṁ kṛtavānasi putraka ,
vihāya phalakāle māṁ sugṛddhāṁ tava darśane.
18. aho hi akāle prasthānam kṛtavān asi putraka
vihāya phalakāle mām sugṛddhām tava darśane
18. aho hi putraka akāle prasthānam kṛtavān asi
tava darśane sugṛddhām mām phalakāle vihāya
18. Oh, indeed, my son, you have departed at an untimely moment, abandoning me, who was so eager for your sight, at the time of fruition.
नूनं गतिः कृतान्तस्य प्राज्ञैरपि सुदुर्विदा ।
यत्र त्वं केशवे नाथे संग्रामेऽनाथवद्धतः ॥१९॥
19. nūnaṁ gatiḥ kṛtāntasya prājñairapi sudurvidā ,
yatra tvaṁ keśave nāthe saṁgrāme'nāthavaddhataḥ.
19. nūnam gatiḥ kṛtāntasya prājñaiḥ api sudurvidā
yatra tvam keśave nāthe saṃgrāme anāthavat hataḥ
19. nūnam kṛtāntasya gatiḥ prājñaiḥ api sudurvidā,
yatra nāthe keśave (sati) tvam saṃgrāme anāthavat hataḥ (asi)
19. The ways of fate (kṛtānta) are indeed inscrutable even to the wise, seeing that you, with Keśava (Krishna) as your protector, were slain in battle as if you were an orphan.
यज्वनां दानशीलानां ब्राह्मणानां कृतात्मनाम् ।
चरितब्रह्मचर्याणां पुण्यतीर्थावगाहिनाम् ॥२०॥
20. yajvanāṁ dānaśīlānāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ kṛtātmanām ,
caritabrahmacaryāṇāṁ puṇyatīrthāvagāhinām.
20. yajvanām dānaśīlānām brāhmaṇānām kṛtātmanām
caritabrahmacaryāṇām puṇyatīrthāvagāhinām
20. yajvanām dānaśīlānām brāhmaṇānām kṛtātmanām
caritabrahmacaryāṇām puṇyatīrthāvagāhinām
20. May you attain the same destination (gati) as those who perform ritual Vedic rituals (yajña), who are liberal in giving (dāna), Brahmins (brāhmaṇa) who have purified their inner selves (ātman), who have practiced celibacy (brahmacarya), and who bathe in sacred pilgrimage (tīrtha) waters.
कृतज्ञानां वदान्यानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि ।
सहस्रदक्षिणानां च या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि ॥२१॥
21. kṛtajñānāṁ vadānyānāṁ guruśuśrūṣiṇāmapi ,
sahasradakṣiṇānāṁ ca yā gatistāmavāpnuhi.
21. kṛtajñānām vadānyānām guruśuśrūṣiṇām api
sahasradakṣiṇānām ca yā gatiḥ tām avāpnuhi
21. kṛtajñānām vadānyānām guruśuśrūṣiṇām api sahasradakṣiṇānām ca yā gatiḥ,
tām avāpnuhi
21. May you attain the same destination (gati) as those who are grateful, who are generous, who serve their spiritual preceptors (guru), and who offer thousands as priestly fees (dakṣiṇā).
या गतिर्युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
हत्वारीन्निहतानां च संग्रामे तां गतिं व्रज ॥२२॥
22. yā gatiryudhyamānānāṁ śūrāṇāmanivartinām ,
hatvārīnnihatānāṁ ca saṁgrāme tāṁ gatiṁ vraja.
22. yā gatiḥ yudhyamānānām śūrāṇām anivartinām
hatvā arīn nihatānām ca saṃgrāme tām gatim vraja
22. yā gatiḥ yudhyamānānām anivartinām śūrāṇām arīn hatvā saṃgrāme nihatānām ca (asti),
tām gatim (tvam) vraja
22. Attain that destination (gati) which is for brave heroes who fight without retreating, and who, having slain their enemies, are themselves killed in battle.
गोसहस्रप्रदातॄणां क्रतुदानां च या गतिः ।
नैवेशिकं चाभिमतं ददतां या गतिः शुभा ॥२३॥
23. gosahasrapradātṝṇāṁ kratudānāṁ ca yā gatiḥ ,
naiveśikaṁ cābhimataṁ dadatāṁ yā gatiḥ śubhā.
23. go-sahasra-pradātṝṇām kratu-dānām ca yā gatiḥ
naiveśikam ca abhimatam dadatām yā gatiḥ śubhā
23. yā gatiḥ go-sahasra-pradātṝṇām ca kratu-dānām
naiveśikam ca abhimatam dadatām yā śubhā gatiḥ
23. The destiny (gati) that is attained by those who donate a thousand cows, and by those who perform sacrificial offerings (yajñas), and the auspicious destiny (gati) that is attained by those who give desired gifts for a settlement (like marriage).
ब्रह्मचर्येण यां यान्ति मुनयः संशितव्रताः ।
एकपत्न्यश्च यां यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥२४॥
24. brahmacaryeṇa yāṁ yānti munayaḥ saṁśitavratāḥ ,
ekapatnyaśca yāṁ yānti tāṁ gatiṁ vraja putraka.
24. brahmacaryeṇa yām yānti munayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
ekapatnyaḥ ca yām yānti tām gatim vraja putraka
24. putraka tām gatim vraja yām munayaḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
brahmacaryeṇa yānti yām ca ekapatnyaḥ yānti
24. O son, attain that destiny (gati) which sages (muni) of firm vows attain through celibacy (brahmacarya), and which chaste wives also attain.
राज्ञां सुचरितैर्या च गतिर्भवति शाश्वती ।
चतुराश्रमिणां पुण्यैः पावितानां सुरक्षितैः ॥२५॥
25. rājñāṁ sucaritairyā ca gatirbhavati śāśvatī ,
caturāśramiṇāṁ puṇyaiḥ pāvitānāṁ surakṣitaiḥ.
25. rājñām su-caritaiḥ yā ca gatiḥ bhavati śāśvatī
catur-āśramiṇām puṇyaiḥ pāvitānām su-rakṣitaiḥ
25. yā ca śāśvatī gatiḥ bhavati rājñām su-caritaiḥ
catur-āśramiṇām puṇyaiḥ pāvitānām su-rakṣitaiḥ
25. And that eternal destiny (gati) which is attained by kings through their good conduct, and by those in the four stages of life (āśramas) who are purified by their merits and well-guarded virtues.
दीनानुकम्पिनां या च सततं संविभागिनाम् ।
पैशुन्याच्च निवृत्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥२६॥
26. dīnānukampināṁ yā ca satataṁ saṁvibhāginām ,
paiśunyācca nivṛttānāṁ tāṁ gatiṁ vraja putraka.
26. dīna-anukampinām yā ca satatam saṃvibhāginām
paiśunyāt ca nivṛttānām tām gatim vraja putraka
26. putraka tām gatim vraja yā ca dīna-anukampinām
satatam saṃvibhāginām ca paiśunyāt nivṛttānām
26. O son, attain that destiny (gati) which is for those who are compassionate towards the distressed, who constantly share (their resources), and who have turned away from all slander.
व्रतिनां धर्मशीलानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि ।
अमोघातिथिनां या च तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥२७॥
27. vratināṁ dharmaśīlānāṁ guruśuśrūṣiṇāmapi ,
amoghātithināṁ yā ca tāṁ gatiṁ vraja putraka.
27. vratinām dharmaśīlānām guruśuśrūṣiṇām api
amoghātithinām yā ca tām gatim vraja putrak
27. putrak vratinām dharmaśīlānām guruśuśrūṣiṇām
api amoghātithinām ca yā gatim tām vraja
27. O son, attain that state (gati) which is reached by those who observe vows, by those of righteous conduct (dharma), by those who serve their teachers (guru), and by those whose hospitality towards guests is never in vain.
ऋतुकाले स्वकां पत्नीं गच्छतां या मनस्विनाम् ।
न चान्यदारसेवीनां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥२८॥
28. ṛtukāle svakāṁ patnīṁ gacchatāṁ yā manasvinām ,
na cānyadārasevīnāṁ tāṁ gatiṁ vraja putraka.
28. ṛtukāle svakām patnīm gacchatām yā manasvinām
na ca anyadārasevinām tām gatim vraja putrak
28. putrak ṛtukāle svakām patnīm gacchatām manasvinām
yā gatim ca anyadārasevinām na tām vraja
28. O son, attain that state (gati) which is for the resolute (manasvin) who approach their own wife at the proper time, and not for those who consort with other women.
साम्ना ये सर्वभूतानि गच्छन्ति गतमत्सराः ।
नारुंतुदानां क्षमिणां या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि ॥२९॥
29. sāmnā ye sarvabhūtāni gacchanti gatamatsarāḥ ,
nāruṁtudānāṁ kṣamiṇāṁ yā gatistāmavāpnuhi.
29. sāmnā ye sarvabhūtāni gacchanti gatamatsarāḥ
na aruṃtudānām kṣamiṇām yā gatiḥ tām avāpnuhi
29. gatamatsarāḥ ye sāmnā sarvabhūtāni gacchanti
kṣamiṇām aruṃtudānām ca na yā gatiḥ tām avāpnuhi
29. Attain that state (gati) which is for those who, free from malice, treat all beings with kindness (sāman), and which is for the forgiving, not for those who inflict pain.
मधुमांसनिवृत्तानां मदाद्दम्भात्तथानृतात् ।
परोपतापत्यक्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥३०॥
30. madhumāṁsanivṛttānāṁ madāddambhāttathānṛtāt ,
paropatāpatyaktānāṁ tāṁ gatiṁ vraja putraka.

30. O son, attain that state (gati) which is for those who abstain from honey and meat, who are free from intoxication, hypocrisy, and falsehood, and who have abandoned causing harm to others.
ह्रीमन्तः सर्वशास्त्रज्ञा ज्ञानतृप्ता जितेन्द्रियाः ।
यां गतिं साधवो यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥३१॥
31. hrīmantaḥ sarvaśāstrajñā jñānatṛptā jitendriyāḥ ,
yāṁ gatiṁ sādhavo yānti tāṁ gatiṁ vraja putraka.

31. O son, attain that state (gati) which good people achieve—those who are modest, knowledgeable in all scriptures, satisfied by wisdom, and have controlled their senses.
एवं विलपतीं दीनां सुभद्रां शोककर्शिताम् ।
अभ्यपद्यत पाञ्चाली वैराटीसहिता तदा ॥३२॥
32. evaṁ vilapatīṁ dīnāṁ subhadrāṁ śokakarśitām ,
abhyapadyata pāñcālī vairāṭīsahitā tadā.

abhyapadyata pāñcālī vairāṭīsahitā tadā

32. Then, Draupadī, accompanied by Uttarā, approached Subhadrā, who was thus lamenting, distressed, and weakened by grief.
ताः प्रकामं रुदित्वा च विलप्य च सुदुःखिताः ।
उन्मत्तवत्तदा राजन्विसंज्ञा न्यपतन्क्षितौ ॥३३॥
33. tāḥ prakāmaṁ ruditvā ca vilapya ca suduḥkhitāḥ ,
unmattavattadā rājanvisaṁjñā nyapatankṣitau.
33. tāḥ prakāmam ruditvā ca vilapya ca suduḥkhitāḥ
unmattavat tadā rājan visaṃjñāḥ nyapatan kṣitau
33. rājan tāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ prakāmam ruditvā ca vilapya ca,

33. O King, after weeping and lamenting intensely, those greatly distressed women then fell unconscious to the ground like madwomen.
सोपचारस्तु कृष्णस्तां दुःखितां भृशदुःखितः ।
सिक्त्वाम्भसा समाश्वास्य तत्तदुक्त्वा हितं वचः ॥३४॥
34. sopacārastu kṛṣṇastāṁ duḥkhitāṁ bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ,
siktvāmbhasā samāśvāsya tattaduktvā hitaṁ vacaḥ.
34. sopacāraḥ tu kṛṣṇaḥ tām duḥkhitām bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ
siktvā ambhasā samāśvāsya tat-tat uktvā hitam vacaḥ
34. tu bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ sopacāraḥ tām duḥkhitām ambhasā siktvā,
samāśvāsya,
tat-tat hitam vacaḥ uktvā
34. But Kṛṣṇa, who was himself deeply distressed, attended to her with care (sopacāra), sprinkling her with water, comforting her, and speaking various beneficial words.
विसंज्ञकल्पां रुदतीमपविद्धां प्रवेपतीम् ।
भगिनीं पुण्डरीकाक्ष इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३५॥
35. visaṁjñakalpāṁ rudatīmapaviddhāṁ pravepatīm ,
bhaginīṁ puṇḍarīkākṣa idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
35. visañjñakalpām rudatīm apaviddhām pravepatīm
bhaginīm puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
35. puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ visañjñakalpām rudatīm apaviddhām

35. The lotus-eyed Krishna (puṇḍarīkākṣaḥ) spoke these words to his sister (bhaginī), who was almost unconscious, weeping, abandoned, and trembling.
सुभद्रे मा शुचः पुत्रं पाञ्चाल्याश्वासयोत्तराम् ।
गतोऽभिमन्युः प्रथितां गतिं क्षत्रियपुंगवः ॥३६॥
36. subhadre mā śucaḥ putraṁ pāñcālyāśvāsayottarām ,
gato'bhimanyuḥ prathitāṁ gatiṁ kṣatriyapuṁgavaḥ.

gataḥ abhimanyuḥ prathitām gatim kṣatriyapuṅgavaḥ
36. subhadre,
mā śucaḥ.

kṣatriyapuṅgavaḥ abhimanyuḥ prathitām gatim gataḥ.
36. O Subhadra, do not grieve. Console Pañcālī and Uttarā concerning (your) son. Abhimanyu, that foremost warrior (kṣatriya), has attained a celebrated state (gati).
ये चान्येऽपि कुले सन्ति पुरुषा नो वरानने ।
सर्वे ते वै गतिं यान्तु अभिमन्योर्यशस्विनः ॥३७॥
37. ye cānye'pi kule santi puruṣā no varānane ,
sarve te vai gatiṁ yāntu abhimanyoryaśasvinaḥ.
37. ye ca anye api kule santi puruṣāḥ naḥ varānane
sarve te vai gatim yāntu abhimanyoḥ yaśasvinaḥ
37. varānane,
ye ca anye api naḥ kule puruṣāḥ santi,
te sarve vai yaśasvinaḥ abhimanyoḥ gatim yāntu.
37. And O beautiful-faced one, may all other men (puruṣa) who are in our family (kula) also attain the glorious state (gati) of Abhimanyu.
कुर्याम तद्वयं कर्म क्रियासुः सुहृदश्च नः ।
कृतवान्यादृगद्यैकस्तव पुत्रो महारथः ॥३८॥
38. kuryāma tadvayaṁ karma kriyāsuḥ suhṛdaśca naḥ ,
kṛtavānyādṛgadyaikastava putro mahārathaḥ.
38. kuryāma tat vayam karma kriyāsuḥ suhṛdaḥ ca naḥ
kṛtavān yādṛk adya ekaḥ tava putraḥ mahārathaḥ
38. vayam tat karma kuryāma,
ca naḥ suhṛdaḥ kriyāsuḥ.
yādṛk ekaḥ tava mahārathaḥ putraḥ adya kṛtavān.
38. We would perform such a deed (karma), and our friends would also perform it, just as your great warrior (mahāratha) son accomplished it alone today.
एवमाश्वास्य भगिनीं द्रौपदीमपि चोत्तराम् ।
पार्थस्यैव महाबाहुः पार्श्वमागादरिंदमः ॥३९॥
39. evamāśvāsya bhaginīṁ draupadīmapi cottarām ,
pārthasyaiva mahābāhuḥ pārśvamāgādariṁdamaḥ.
39. evam āśvāsya bhaginīm draupadīm api ca uttarām
pārthasya eva mahābāhuḥ pārśvam āgāt arindamaḥ
39. mahābāhuḥ arindamaḥ evam bhaginīm draupadīm api
ca uttarām āśvāsya pārthasya eva pārśvam āgāt
39. Having thus consoled his sister Draupadi and also Uttara, the mighty-armed conqueror of enemies went to the side of Arjuna (Pārtha).
ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञाय नृपान्कृष्णो बन्धूंस्तथाभिभूः ।
विवेशान्तःपुरं राजंस्तेऽन्ये जग्मुर्यथालयम् ॥४०॥
40. tato'bhyanujñāya nṛpānkṛṣṇo bandhūṁstathābhibhūḥ ,
viveśāntaḥpuraṁ rājaṁste'nye jagmuryathālayam.
40. tataḥ abhyanujñāya nṛpān kṛṣṇaḥ bandhūn tathā abhibhūḥ
viveśa antaḥpuram rājan te anye jagmuḥ yathā ālayam
40. rājan tataḥ abhibhūḥ kṛṣṇaḥ nṛpān tathā bandhūn
abhyanujñāya antaḥpuram viveśa te anye yathā ālayam jagmuḥ
40. Then, having taken leave of the kings and his relatives, Krishna (Kṛṣṇa), the subduer (of foes), entered the inner chambers (antaḥpura), O King. The others went to their respective dwellings (ālaya).
