भीष्म उवाच ।
ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे तपसे धृतनिश्चयाम् ।
दृष्ट्वा न्यवर्तयंस्तात किं कार्यमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataste tāpasāḥ sarve tapase dhṛtaniścayām ,
dṛṣṭvā nyavartayaṁstāta kiṁ kāryamiti cābruvan.

bhīṣma uvāca: tataḥ te sarve tāpasāḥ tapase dhṛtaniścayām dṛṣṭvā (tām) nyavartayan ca "kim kāryam" iti abruvan.
1. Bhishma said: "Then, O dear one, all those ascetics, seeing her firm in her resolve for ascetic practice (tapas), dissuaded her and asked, 'What is to be done?'"
तानुवाच ततः कन्या तपोवृद्धानृषींस्तदा ।
निराकृतास्मि भीष्मेण भ्रंशिता पतिधर्मतः ॥२॥
2. tānuvāca tataḥ kanyā tapovṛddhānṛṣīṁstadā ,
nirākṛtāsmi bhīṣmeṇa bhraṁśitā patidharmataḥ.
2. tān uvāca tataḥ kanyā tapovṛddhān ṛṣīn tadā
nirākṛtā asmi bhīṣmeṇa bhraṃśitā patidharmataḥ

2. Then, the maiden said to those sages, who were venerable due to their ascetic practice (tapas): "I have been rejected by Bhishma and deprived of the rightful role of a wife (pati-dharma)."
वधार्थं तस्य दीक्षा मे न लोकार्थं तपोधनाः ।
निहत्य भीष्मं गच्छेयं शान्तिमित्येव निश्चयः ॥३॥
3. vadhārthaṁ tasya dīkṣā me na lokārthaṁ tapodhanāḥ ,
nihatya bhīṣmaṁ gaccheyaṁ śāntimityeva niścayaḥ.
3. vadha-artham tasya dīkṣā me na loka-artham tapodhanāḥ
nihatya bhīṣmam gaccheyam śāntim iti eva niścayaḥ
3. tapodhanāḥ,
me dīkṣā tasya vadha-artham na loka-artham.
bhīṣmam nihatya śāntim gaccheyam iti eva niścayaḥ.
3. O ascetics, my vow (dīkṣā) is for his killing, not for any worldly gain. Having slain Bhishma, I shall attain peace (śānti) – this is my firm resolve.
यत्कृते दुःखवसतिमिमां प्राप्तास्मि शाश्वतीम् ।
पतिलोकाद्विहीना च नैव स्त्री न पुमानिह ॥४॥
4. yatkṛte duḥkhavasatimimāṁ prāptāsmi śāśvatīm ,
patilokādvihīnā ca naiva strī na pumāniha.
4. yat-kṛte duḥkha-vasatim imām prāptā asmi śāśvatīm
pati-lokāt vihīnā ca na eva strī na pumān iha
4. yat-kṛte,
imām śāśvatīm duḥkha-vasatim prāptā asmi.
ca pati-lokāt vihīnā iha na eva strī na pumān.
4. For whose sake I have attained this eternal abode of sorrow. Deprived of a husband's realm, I am neither a woman nor a man in this world.
नाहत्वा युधि गाङ्गेयं निवर्तेयं तपोधनाः ।
एष मे हृदि संकल्पो यदर्थमिदमुद्यतम् ॥५॥
5. nāhatvā yudhi gāṅgeyaṁ nivarteyaṁ tapodhanāḥ ,
eṣa me hṛdi saṁkalpo yadarthamidamudyatam.
5. na ahatvā yudhi gāṅgeyam nivarteyam tapodhanāḥ
eṣa me hṛdi saṃkalpaḥ yat-artham idam udyatam
5. tapodhanāḥ,
gāṅgeyam yudhi na ahatvā (aham) na nivarteyam.
eṣa me hṛdi saṃkalpaḥ,
yat-artham idam udyatam.
5. O ascetics, without killing Gangeya in battle, I shall not turn back. This is the firm resolve (saṃkalpa) in my heart, for which this (endeavor) has been undertaken.
स्त्रीभावे परिनिर्विण्णा पुंस्त्वार्थे कृतनिश्चया ।
भीष्मे प्रतिचिकीर्षामि नास्मि वार्येति वै पुनः ॥६॥
6. strībhāve parinirviṇṇā puṁstvārthe kṛtaniścayā ,
bhīṣme praticikīrṣāmi nāsmi vāryeti vai punaḥ.
6. strī-bhāve parinirviṇṇā puṃs-tva-arthe kṛta-niścayā
bhīṣme praticikīrṣāmi na asmi vāryā iti vai punaḥ
6. strī-bhāve parinirviṇṇā (aham),
puṃs-tva-arthe kṛta-niścayā (aham) bhīṣme praticikīrṣāmi.
vai punaḥ na asmi vāryā iti.
6. Completely disgusted (parinirviṇṇā) with the female state, and having made a firm resolve for the purpose of manhood, I wish to retaliate against Bhishma. Indeed, I am not to be deterred again.
तां देवो दर्शयामास शूलपाणिरुमापतिः ।
मध्ये तेषां महर्षीणां स्वेन रूपेण भामिनीम् ॥७॥
7. tāṁ devo darśayāmāsa śūlapāṇirumāpatiḥ ,
madhye teṣāṁ maharṣīṇāṁ svena rūpeṇa bhāminīm.
7. tām devaḥ darśayāmāsa śūlapāṇiḥ umāpatiḥ
madhye teṣām maharṣīṇām svena rūpeṇa bhāminīm
7. devaḥ śūlapāṇiḥ umāpatiḥ (saḥ) svena rūpeṇa
teṣām maharṣīṇām madhye tām bhāminīm darśayāmāsa
7. The god, Śūlapāṇi, the lord of Umā, showed that radiant lady to those great sages, manifesting in his own (divine) form.
छन्द्यमाना वरेणाथ सा वव्रे मत्पराजयम् ।
वधिष्यसीति तां देवः प्रत्युवाच मनस्विनीम् ॥८॥
8. chandyamānā vareṇātha sā vavre matparājayam ,
vadhiṣyasīti tāṁ devaḥ pratyuvāca manasvinīm.
8. chandyamānā vareṇa atha sā vavre matparājayam
vadhiṣyasi iti tām devaḥ pratyuvāca manasvinīm
8. atha vareṇa chandyamānā sā matparājayam vavre
iti devaḥ tām manasvinīm pratyuvāca vadhiṣyasi
8. Then, being offered a boon, she requested the defeat of her adversary. The god replied to that resolute woman, "You will kill (him)."
ततः सा पुनरेवाथ कन्या रुद्रमुवाच ह ।
उपपद्येत्कथं देव स्त्रियो मम जयो युधि ।
स्त्रीभावेन च मे गाढं मनः शान्तमुमापते ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sā punarevātha kanyā rudramuvāca ha ,
upapadyetkathaṁ deva striyo mama jayo yudhi ,
strībhāvena ca me gāḍhaṁ manaḥ śāntamumāpate.
9. tataḥ sā punaḥ eva atha kanyā rudram
uvāca ha upapadyet katham deva
striyaḥ mama jayaḥ yudhi strībhāvena
ca me gāḍham manaḥ śāntam umāpate
9. tataḥ atha sā kanyā punaḥ eva ha rudram
uvāca deva (he) umāpate (he) katham
yudhi mama striyaḥ jayaḥ upapadyet
ca strībhāvena me manaḥ gāḍham śāntam
9. Then again, that maiden spoke to Rudra (Shiva): "O god, how can victory in battle (yudhi) be mine, a woman's? And, O lord of Umā, my mind is greatly weakened due to my feminine nature."
प्रतिश्रुतश्च भूतेश त्वया भीष्मपराजयः ।
यथा स सत्यो भवति तथा कुरु वृषध्वज ।
यथा हन्यां समागम्य भीष्मं शांतनवं युधि ॥१०॥
10. pratiśrutaśca bhūteśa tvayā bhīṣmaparājayaḥ ,
yathā sa satyo bhavati tathā kuru vṛṣadhvaja ,
yathā hanyāṁ samāgamya bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ yudhi.
10. pratiśrutaḥ ca bhūteśa tvayā
bhīṣmaparājayaḥ yathā saḥ satyaḥ bhavati
tathā kuru vṛṣadhvaja yathā hanyām
samāgamya bhīṣmam śāntanavam yudhi
10. ca bhūteśa (he) tvayā bhīṣmaparājayaḥ
pratiśrutaḥ (asti) vṛṣadhvaja (he) tathā
kuru yathā saḥ satyaḥ bhavati yathā
samāgamya yudhi śāntanavam bhīṣmam hanyām
10. And, O lord of beings (Bhūteśa), Bhishma's defeat has been promised by you. O bull-bannered one (Vṛṣadhvaja), please act so that this becomes true, so that I may, after encountering him, kill Bhishma, the son of Śantanu, in battle (yudhi).
तामुवाच महादेवः कन्यां किल वृषध्वजः ।
न मे वागनृतं भद्रे प्राह सत्यं भविष्यति ॥११॥
11. tāmuvāca mahādevaḥ kanyāṁ kila vṛṣadhvajaḥ ,
na me vāganṛtaṁ bhadre prāha satyaṁ bhaviṣyati.
11. tām uvāca mahādevaḥ kanyām kila vṛṣadhvajaḥ na
me vāk anṛtam bhadre prāha satyam bhaviṣyati
11. bhadre vṛṣadhvajaḥ mahādevaḥ kila tām kanyām
uvāca me vāk anṛtam na prāha satyam bhaviṣyati
11. Indeed, Mahadeva, the Bull-bannered god (Śiva), said to that maiden, 'O auspicious one, my words do not speak falsehood; what I say will certainly come true.'
वधिष्यसि रणे भीष्मं पुरुषत्वं च लप्स्यसे ।
स्मरिष्यसि च तत्सर्वं देहमन्यं गता सती ॥१२॥
12. vadhiṣyasi raṇe bhīṣmaṁ puruṣatvaṁ ca lapsyase ,
smariṣyasi ca tatsarvaṁ dehamanyaṁ gatā satī.
12. vadhiṣyasi raṇe bhīṣmam puruṣatvam ca lapsyase
smariṣyasi ca tat sarvam deham anyam gatā satī
12. raṇe bhīṣmam vadhiṣyasi ca puruṣatvam lapsyase
ca anyam deham gatā satī tat sarvam smariṣyasi
12. You will kill Bhishma in battle, and you will attain male form. And you will remember all that (your past), even after you have entered another body.
द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता भविष्यसि महारथः ।
शीघ्रास्त्रश्चित्रयोधी च भविष्यसि सुसंमतः ॥१३॥
13. drupadasya kule jātā bhaviṣyasi mahārathaḥ ,
śīghrāstraścitrayodhī ca bhaviṣyasi susaṁmataḥ.
13. drupadasya kule jātā bhaviṣyasi mahārathaḥ
śīghrāstraḥ citrayodhī ca bhaviṣyasi susaṃmataḥ
13. drupadasya kule jātā mahārathaḥ bhaviṣyasi ca
śīghrāstraḥ citrayodhī susaṃmataḥ bhaviṣyasi
13. You will be born into the family of Drupada and become a great chariot-warrior. You will be swift with weapons, a wondrous fighter, and highly respected.
यथोक्तमेव कल्याणि सर्वमेतद्भविष्यति ।
भविष्यसि पुमान्पश्चात्कस्माच्चित्कालपर्ययात् ॥१४॥
14. yathoktameva kalyāṇi sarvametadbhaviṣyati ,
bhaviṣyasi pumānpaścātkasmāccitkālaparyayāt.
14. yathoktam eva kalyāṇi sarvam etat bhaviṣyati
bhaviṣyasi pumān paścāt kasmāt cit kālaparyayāt
14. kalyāṇi etat sarvam yathoktam eva bhaviṣyati
paścāt kasmāt cit kālaparyayāt pumān bhaviṣyasi
14. O auspicious one, all this will indeed come to pass exactly as declared. Later, after a certain passage of time, you will become a man.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः कपर्दी वृषभध्वजः ।
पश्यतामेव विप्राणां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१५॥
15. evamuktvā mahātejāḥ kapardī vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ,
paśyatāmeva viprāṇāṁ tatraivāntaradhīyata.
15. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ kapardī vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
paśyatām eva viprāṇām tatra eva antaradhīyata
15. evam uktvā mahātejāḥ kapardī vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
viprāṇām paśyatām eva tatra eva antaradhīyata
15. Having thus spoken, Shiva (kapardī vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ), the greatly radiant one, disappeared right there, even as the Brahmins watched.
ततः सा पश्यतां तेषां महर्षीणामनिन्दिता ।
समाहृत्य वनात्तस्मात्काष्ठानि वरवर्णिनी ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ sā paśyatāṁ teṣāṁ maharṣīṇāmaninditā ,
samāhṛtya vanāttasmātkāṣṭhāni varavarṇinī.
16. tataḥ sā paśyatām teṣām maharṣīṇām aninditā
samāhṛtya vanāt tasmāt kāṣṭhāni varavarṇinī
16. tataḥ sā aninditā varavarṇinī teṣām maharṣīṇām
paśyatām tasmāt vanāt kāṣṭhāni samāhṛtya
16. Then, that faultless and beautiful lady (varavarṇinī), while those great sages watched, gathered wood from that forest.
चितां कृत्वा सुमहतीं प्रदाय च हुताशनम् ।
प्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ महाराज रोषदीप्तेन चेतसा ॥१७॥
17. citāṁ kṛtvā sumahatīṁ pradāya ca hutāśanam ,
pradīpte'gnau mahārāja roṣadīptena cetasā.
17. citām kṛtvā sumahatīm pradāya ca hutāśanam
pradīpte agnau mahārāja roṣadīptena cetasā

17. O great king, having prepared a very large pyre and offered fire, with her mind inflamed by wrath, into the blazing fire...
उक्त्वा भीष्मवधायेति प्रविवेश हुताशनम् ।
ज्येष्ठा काशिसुता राजन्यमुनामभितो नदीम् ॥१८॥
18. uktvā bhīṣmavadhāyeti praviveśa hutāśanam ,
jyeṣṭhā kāśisutā rājanyamunāmabhito nadīm.
18. uktvā bhīṣmavadhāya iti praviveśa hutāśanam
jyeṣṭhā kāśisutā rājan yamunām abhitaḥ nadīm
18. rājan jyeṣṭhā kāśisutā bhīṣmavadhāya iti uktvā

18. O king, the eldest daughter of Kashi, having declared "for the slaying of Bhishma" thus, entered the fire (hutāśanam) near the Yamuna river.
