वैशंपायन उवाच ।
हतेषु सर्वसैन्येषु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
शुश्रुवे पितरं वृद्धं निर्यातं गजसाह्वयात् ॥१॥

hateṣu sarvasainyeṣu dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: When all the armies had been destroyed, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king who upholds natural law (dharma), heard that his aged father had departed from Hastinapura.
सोऽभ्ययात्पुत्रशोकार्तः पुत्रशोकपरिप्लुतम् ।
शोचमानो महाराज भ्रातृभिः सहितस्तदा ॥२॥
2. so'bhyayātputraśokārtaḥ putraśokapariplutam ,
śocamāno mahārāja bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitastadā.
2. saḥ abhyayāt putraśokārtaḥ putraśokapariplutam
śocamānaḥ mahārāja bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ tadā

2. O great king, then, himself lamenting and distressed by the sorrow of his sons, he (Yudhiṣṭhira) approached his father, who was overwhelmed by the grief of his sons, accompanied by his brothers.
अन्वीयमानो वीरेण दाशार्हेण महात्मना ।
युयुधानेन च तथा तथैव च युयुत्सुना ॥३॥
3. anvīyamāno vīreṇa dāśārheṇa mahātmanā ,
yuyudhānena ca tathā tathaiva ca yuyutsunā.

3. He (Yudhiṣṭhira) was being followed by the heroic, great-souled Dāśārha, Yuyudhāna, and similarly by Yuyutsu.
तमन्वगात्सुदुःखार्ता द्रौपदी शोककर्शिता ।
सह पाञ्चालयोषिद्भिर्यास्तत्रासन्समागताः ॥४॥
4. tamanvagātsuduḥkhārtā draupadī śokakarśitā ,
saha pāñcālayoṣidbhiryāstatrāsansamāgatāḥ.

saha pāñcālayoṣidbhiḥ yāḥ tatra āsan samāgatāḥ

4. Greatly distressed and emaciated by grief, Draupadi followed him, accompanied by the women of Pañcāla who had gathered there.
स गङ्गामनु वृन्दानि स्त्रीणां भरतसत्तम ।
कुररीणामिवार्तानां क्रोशन्तीनां ददर्श ह ॥५॥
5. sa gaṅgāmanu vṛndāni strīṇāṁ bharatasattama ,
kurarīṇāmivārtānāṁ krośantīnāṁ dadarśa ha.

5. O best of the Bharatas, along the Ganga, he saw indeed flocks of women, distressed and crying out like curlews.
ताभिः परिवृतो राजा रुदतीभिः सहस्रशः ।
ऊर्ध्वबाहुभिरार्ताभिर्ब्रुवतीभिः प्रियाप्रिये ॥६॥
6. tābhiḥ parivṛto rājā rudatībhiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
ūrdhvabāhubhirārtābhirbruvatībhiḥ priyāpriye.

6. The king, surrounded by thousands of those crying, distressed women, their arms uplifted, speaking both pleasant and unpleasant words.
क्व नु धर्मज्ञता राज्ञः क्व नु साद्यानृशंसता ।
यदावधीत्पितॄन्भ्रातॄन्गुरून्पुत्रान्सखीनपि ॥७॥
7. kva nu dharmajñatā rājñaḥ kva nu sādyānṛśaṁsatā ,
yadāvadhītpitṝnbhrātṝngurūnputrānsakhīnapi.

yat avadhīt pitṝn bhrātṝn gurūn putrān sakhīn api

7. What has become of the king's understanding of natural law (dharma)? Where is that compassion today, since he killed fathers, brothers, preceptors (gurus), sons, and even friends?
घातयित्वा कथं द्रोणं भीष्मं चापि पितामहम् ।
मनस्तेऽभून्महाबाहो हत्वा चापि जयद्रथम् ॥८॥
8. ghātayitvā kathaṁ droṇaṁ bhīṣmaṁ cāpi pitāmaham ,
manaste'bhūnmahābāho hatvā cāpi jayadratham.
8. ghātayitvā katham droṇam bhīṣmam ca api pitāmaham
manaḥ te abhūt mahābāho hatvā ca api jayadratham
8. mahābāho katham te manaḥ droṇam ca bhīṣmam pitāmaham
api ghātayitvā ca jayadratham api hatvā abhūt
8. O mighty-armed one, how could your mind be (unburdened) after having caused Drona and even grandfather Bhishma to be killed, and also after having killed Jayadratha?
किं नु राज्येन ते कार्यं पितॄन्भ्रातॄनपश्यतः ।
अभिमन्युं च दुर्धर्षं द्रौपदेयांश्च भारत ॥९॥
9. kiṁ nu rājyena te kāryaṁ pitṝnbhrātṝnapaśyataḥ ,
abhimanyuṁ ca durdharṣaṁ draupadeyāṁśca bhārata.
9. kim nu rājyena te kāryam pitṝn bhrātṝn apaśyataḥ
abhimanyum ca durdharṣam draupadeyān ca bhārata
9. bhārata pitṝn bhrātṝn ca durdharṣam abhimanyum ca

9. O descendant of Bharata, what use is a kingdom to you, who will not see your fathers (elders), brothers, the formidable Abhimanyu, and Draupadi's sons?
अतीत्य ता महाबाहुः क्रोशन्तीः कुररीरिव ।
ववन्दे पितरं ज्येष्ठं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१०॥
10. atītya tā mahābāhuḥ krośantīḥ kurarīriva ,
vavande pitaraṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
10. atītya tāḥ mahābāhuḥ krośantīḥ kurarīḥ iva
vavande pitaram jyeṣṭham dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

10. Having passed by those wailing women, who cried out like ospreys, the mighty-armed Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness (dharma), bowed down to his elder father.
ततोऽभिवाद्य पितरं धर्मेणामित्रकर्शनाः ।
न्यवेदयन्त नामानि पाण्डवास्तेऽपि सर्वशः ॥११॥
11. tato'bhivādya pitaraṁ dharmeṇāmitrakarśanāḥ ,
nyavedayanta nāmāni pāṇḍavāste'pi sarvaśaḥ.
11. tataḥ abhivādya pitaram dharmeṇa amitrakarśanāḥ
nyavedayanta nāmāni pāṇḍavāḥ te api sarvaśaḥ
11. tataḥ amitrakarśanāḥ te pāṇḍavāḥ pitaram dharmeṇa
abhivādya api sarvaśaḥ nāmāni nyavedayanta
11. Then, having saluted their father according to custom (dharma), those Pandavas, the subduers of enemies, also announced their names, all of them in due order.
तमात्मजान्तकरणं पिता पुत्रवधार्दितः ।
अप्रीयमाणः शोकार्तः पाण्डवं परिषस्वजे ॥१२॥
12. tamātmajāntakaraṇaṁ pitā putravadhārditaḥ ,
aprīyamāṇaḥ śokārtaḥ pāṇḍavaṁ pariṣasvaje.
12. tam ātmajāntakaraṇam pitā putravadhārditaḥ
aprīyamāṇaḥ śokārtaḥ pāṇḍavam pariṣasvaje
12. pitā putravadhārditaḥ śokārtaḥ aprīyamāṇaḥ

12. The father (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), tormented by the slaughter of his sons and distressed by grief, yet feeling no joy, embraced that Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira), the slayer of his own sons.
धर्मराजं परिष्वज्य सान्त्वयित्वा च भारत ।
दुष्टात्मा भीममन्वैच्छद्दिधक्षुरिव पावकः ॥१३॥
13. dharmarājaṁ pariṣvajya sāntvayitvā ca bhārata ,
duṣṭātmā bhīmamanvaicchaddidhakṣuriva pāvakaḥ.
13. dharmarājam pariṣvajya sāntvayitvā ca bhārata
duṣṭātmā bhīmam anu aicchat didhakṣuḥ iva pāvakaḥ
13. bhārata dharmarājam pariṣvajya ca sāntvayitvā
duṣṭātmā pāvakaḥ iva didhakṣuḥ bhīmam anu aicchat
13. O Bhārata, having embraced Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) and offered him solace, the wicked-minded one (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) then sought Bhīma, like a fire eager to consume.
स कोपपावकस्तस्य शोकवायुसमीरितः ।
भीमसेनमयं दावं दिधक्षुरिव दृश्यते ॥१४॥
14. sa kopapāvakastasya śokavāyusamīritaḥ ,
bhīmasenamayaṁ dāvaṁ didhakṣuriva dṛśyate.
14. sa kopapāvakaḥ tasya śokavāyusamīritaḥ
bhīmasenamayam dāvam didhakṣuḥ iva dṛśyate
14. tasya śokavāyusamīritaḥ sa kopapāvakaḥ
bhīmasenamayam dāvam didhakṣuḥ iva dṛśyate
14. His (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) fire of wrath, fanned by the wind of grief, appears like one eager to consume Bhīmasena, who is a veritable forest fire.
तस्य संकल्पमाज्ञाय भीमं प्रत्यशुभं हरिः ।
भीममाक्षिप्य पाणिभ्यां प्रददौ भीममायसम् ॥१५॥
15. tasya saṁkalpamājñāya bhīmaṁ pratyaśubhaṁ hariḥ ,
bhīmamākṣipya pāṇibhyāṁ pradadau bhīmamāyasam.
15. tasya saṅkalpam ājñāya bhīmam prati aśubham hariḥ
bhīmam ākṣipya pāṇibhyām pradadau bhīmam āyasam
15. hariḥ tasya bhīmam prati aśubham saṅkalpam ājñāya

15. Understanding his (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) malevolent intention towards Bhīma, Hari (Kṛṣṇa) swiftly pulled Bhīma aside with his (Kṛṣṇa's) own hands. Then he offered (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) an iron image of Bhīma.
प्रागेव तु महाबुद्धिर्बुद्ध्वा तस्येङ्गितं हरिः ।
संविधानं महाप्राज्ञस्तत्र चक्रे जनार्दनः ॥१६॥
16. prāgeva tu mahābuddhirbuddhvā tasyeṅgitaṁ hariḥ ,
saṁvidhānaṁ mahāprājñastatra cakre janārdanaḥ.
16. prāk eva tu mahābuddhiḥ buddhvā tasya iṅgitam hariḥ
saṃvidhānam mahāprājñaḥ tatra cakre janārdanaḥ
16. tu prāk eva mahābuddhiḥ mahāprājñaḥ hariḥ janārdanaḥ
tasya iṅgitam buddhvā tatra saṃvidhānam cakre
16. Beforehand, the greatly intelligent Hari, Janārdana, being supremely wise and understanding his gesture, made an arrangement there.
तं तु गृह्यैव पाणिभ्यां भीमसेनमयस्मयम् ।
बभञ्ज बलवान्राजा मन्यमानो वृकोदरम् ॥१७॥
17. taṁ tu gṛhyaiva pāṇibhyāṁ bhīmasenamayasmayam ,
babhañja balavānrājā manyamāno vṛkodaram.
17. tam tu gṛhya eva pāṇibhyām bhīmasenam ayasmayam
babhañja balavān rājā manyamānaḥ vṛkodaram
17. tu balavān rājā pāṇibhyām tam ayasmayam bhīmasenam
gṛhya eva vṛkodaram manyamānaḥ babhañja
17. But the powerful king, taking hold with both hands of that iron image of Bhīmasena, broke it, thinking it to be Vṛkodara himself.
नागायुतबलप्राणः स राजा भीममायसम् ।
भङ्क्त्वा विमथितोरस्कः सुस्राव रुधिरं मुखात् ॥१८॥
18. nāgāyutabalaprāṇaḥ sa rājā bhīmamāyasam ,
bhaṅktvā vimathitoraskaḥ susrāva rudhiraṁ mukhāt.
18. nāgāyutabalaprāṇaḥ saḥ rājā bhīmam āyasam
bhaṅktvā vimathitoraskaḥ susrāva rudhiram mukhāt
18. nāgāyutabalaprāṇaḥ vimathitoraskaḥ saḥ rājā
āyasam bhīmam bhaṅktvā mukhāt rudhiram susrāva
18. That king, whose vital force was equal to the strength of ten thousand elephants, having shattered the iron (image of) Bhīma, and with his chest churned up, profusely discharged blood from his mouth.
ततः पपात मेदिन्यां तथैव रुधिरोक्षितः ।
प्रपुष्पिताग्रशिखरः पारिजात इव द्रुमः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ papāta medinyāṁ tathaiva rudhirokṣitaḥ ,
prapuṣpitāgraśikharaḥ pārijāta iva drumaḥ.
19. tataḥ papāta medinyām tathā eva rudhirokṣitaḥ
prapuṣpitāgraśikharaḥ pārijātaḥ iva drumaḥ
19. tataḥ rudhirokṣitaḥ saḥ prapuṣpitāgraśikharaḥ
pārijātaḥ drumaḥ iva tathā eva medinyām papāta
19. Then, drenched in blood, he fell to the earth, just like a Pārijāta tree with its topmost branches full of blossoms.
पर्यगृह्णत तं विद्वान्सूतो गावल्गणिस्तदा ।
मैवमित्यब्रवीच्चैनं शमयन्सान्त्वयन्निव ॥२०॥
20. paryagṛhṇata taṁ vidvānsūto gāvalgaṇistadā ,
maivamityabravīccainaṁ śamayansāntvayanniva.
20. paryagṛhṇata tam vidvān sūtaḥ gāvalgaṇiḥ tadā mā
evam iti abravīt ca enam śamayan sāntvayan iva
20. tadā vidvān sūtaḥ gāvalgaṇiḥ tam paryagṛhṇata ca
enam śamayan sāntvayan iva mā evam iti abravīt
20. Then, the wise charioteer (sūta), Sanjaya (Gāvalgaṇi), held him, and, as if pacifying and comforting him, said, 'Not so!'
स तु कोपं समुत्सृज्य गतमन्युर्महामनाः ।
हा हा भीमेति चुक्रोश भूयः शोकसमन्वितः ॥२१॥
21. sa tu kopaṁ samutsṛjya gatamanyurmahāmanāḥ ,
hā hā bhīmeti cukrośa bhūyaḥ śokasamanvitaḥ.
21. saḥ tu kopam samutsṛjya gatmanyuḥ mahāmanāḥ hā
hā bhīma iti cukrośa bhūyaḥ śokasammanvitaḥ
21. saḥ tu kopam samutsṛjya gatmanyuḥ mahāmanāḥ
bhūyaḥ śokasammanvitaḥ hā hā bhīma iti cukrośa
21. But he, having abandoned his anger and with his wrath gone, that great-souled one, cried out, 'Alas, alas, Bhīma!' again, overcome with sorrow.
तं विदित्वा गतक्रोधं भीमसेनवधार्दितम् ।
वासुदेवो वरः पुंसामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. taṁ viditvā gatakrodhaṁ bhīmasenavadhārditam ,
vāsudevo varaḥ puṁsāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
22. tam viditvā gatakrodham bhīmasenavadhārditam
vāsudevaḥ varaḥ puṃsām idam vacanam abravīt
22. vāsudevaḥ puṃsām varaḥ tam gatakrodham
bhīmasenavadhārditam viditvā idam vacanam abravīt
22. Having known him to be free from anger and tormented by the imagined slaying of Bhīmasena, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the best among men (puruṣa), spoke these words.
मा शुचो धृतराष्ट्र त्वं नैष भीमस्त्वया हतः ।
आयसी प्रतिमा ह्येषा त्वया राजन्निपातिता ॥२३॥
23. mā śuco dhṛtarāṣṭra tvaṁ naiṣa bhīmastvayā hataḥ ,
āyasī pratimā hyeṣā tvayā rājannipātitā.
23. mā śucaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭra tvam na eṣaḥ bhīmaḥ tvayā
hataḥ āyasī pratimā hi eṣā tvayā rājan nipātitā
23. dhṛtarāṣṭra tvam mā śucaḥ tvayā eṣaḥ bhīmaḥ na
hataḥ hi rājan tvayā eṣā āyasī pratimā nipātitā
23. Do not grieve, Dhṛtarāṣṭra! This Bhīma was not killed by you. Indeed, O king, it was an iron statue that was struck down by you.
त्वां क्रोधवशमापन्नं विदित्वा भरतर्षभ ।
मयापकृष्टः कौन्तेयो मृत्योर्दंष्ट्रान्तरं गतः ॥२४॥
24. tvāṁ krodhavaśamāpannaṁ viditvā bharatarṣabha ,
mayāpakṛṣṭaḥ kaunteyo mṛtyordaṁṣṭrāntaraṁ gataḥ.
24. tvām krodhavaśam āpannam viditvā bharatarṣabha mayā
apakṛṣṭaḥ kaunteyaḥ mṛtyoḥ daṃṣṭrāntaram gataḥ
24. bharatarṣabha tvām krodhavaśam āpannam viditvā mayā
kaunteyaḥ mṛtyoḥ daṃṣṭrāntaram gataḥ apakṛṣṭaḥ
24. O bull among the Bharatas, knowing that you had fallen into the grip of anger, I drew the son of Kunti away from the jaws of death.
न हि ते राजशार्दूल बले तुल्योऽस्ति कश्चन ।
कः सहेत महाबाहो बाह्वोर्निग्रहणं नरः ॥२५॥
25. na hi te rājaśārdūla bale tulyo'sti kaścana ,
kaḥ saheta mahābāho bāhvornigrahaṇaṁ naraḥ.
25. na hi te rājaśārdūla bale tulyaḥ asti kaścana
kaḥ saheta mahābāho bāhvoḥ nigrahaṇam naraḥ
25. rājaśārdūla hi te bale tulyaḥ kaścana na asti.
mahābāho kaḥ naraḥ bāhvoḥ nigrahaṇam saheta?
25. Indeed, O tiger among kings, no one is equal to your strength. O mighty-armed one, what man could endure the grip of your arms?
यथान्तकमनुप्राप्य जीवन्कश्चिन्न मुच्यते ।
एवं बाह्वन्तरं प्राप्य तव जीवेन्न कश्चन ॥२६॥
26. yathāntakamanuprāpya jīvankaścinna mucyate ,
evaṁ bāhvantaraṁ prāpya tava jīvenna kaścana.
26. yathā antakam anuprāpya jīvan kaścit na mucyate
evam bāhv-antaram prāpya tava jīvet na kaścana
26. yathā kaścit jīvan antakam anuprāpya na mucyate,
evam tava bāhv-antaram prāpya kaścana na jīvet.
26. Just as no one, having reached Death, is released alive; so too, no one, having reached the embrace of your arms, could live.
तस्मात्पुत्रेण या सा ते प्रतिमा कारितायसी ।
भीमस्य सेयं कौरव्य तवैवोपहृता मया ॥२७॥
27. tasmātputreṇa yā sā te pratimā kāritāyasī ,
bhīmasya seyaṁ kauravya tavaivopahṛtā mayā.
27. tasmāt putreṇa yā sā te pratimā kāritā āyasī
bhīmasya sā iyam kauravya tava eva upahṛtā mayā
27. tasmāt kauravya,
mayā tava eva yā sā te putreṇa bhīmasya āyasī pratimā kāritā,
sā iyam upahṛtā (asti).
27. Therefore, O Kaurava, that iron statue of Bhīma, which was commissioned by your son (Duryodhana), has now been presented to you by me.
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतापाद्धर्मादपहृतं मनः ।
तव राजेन्द्र तेन त्वं भीमसेनं जिघांससि ॥२८॥
28. putraśokābhisaṁtāpāddharmādapahṛtaṁ manaḥ ,
tava rājendra tena tvaṁ bhīmasenaṁ jighāṁsasi.
28. putraśokābhisantāpāt dharmāt apahṛtam manaḥ
tava rājendra tena tvam bhīmasenam jighāṃsasi
28. rājendra putraśokābhisantāpāt dharmāt tava
manaḥ apahṛtam tena tvam bhīmasenam jighāṃsasi
28. O King of kings, your mind has been stolen away from righteousness (dharma) by the intense agony of grieving for your son. Therefore, you desire to kill Bhīmasena.
न च ते तत्क्षमं राजन्हन्यास्त्वं यद्वृकोदरम् ।
न हि पुत्रा महाराज जीवेयुस्ते कथंचन ॥२९॥
29. na ca te tatkṣamaṁ rājanhanyāstvaṁ yadvṛkodaram ,
na hi putrā mahārāja jīveyuste kathaṁcana.
29. na ca te tat kṣamam rājan hanyāḥ tvam yat vṛkodaram
na hi putrāḥ mahārāja jīveyuḥ te kathaṃcana
29. rājan tvam yat vṛkodaram hanyāḥ tat te na ca
kṣamam mahārāja hi te putrāḥ kathaṃcana na jīveyuḥ
29. And that is not fitting for you, O King, that you would kill Vṛkodara (Bhīma). For truly, O Great King, your sons would certainly not live (if you did that).
तस्माद्यत्कृतमस्माभिर्मन्यमानैः क्षमं प्रति ।
अनुमन्यस्व तत्सर्वं मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥३०॥
30. tasmādyatkṛtamasmābhirmanyamānaiḥ kṣamaṁ prati ,
anumanyasva tatsarvaṁ mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
30. tasmāt yat kṛtam asmābhiḥ manyamānaiḥ kṣamam prati
anumanyasva tat sarvam mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
30. tasmāt yat asmābhiḥ kṣamam prati manyamānaiḥ kṛtam
tat sarvam anumanyasva ca mā śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
30. Therefore, whatever was done by us, considering it appropriate, you should approve all of that, and do not let your mind dwell in sorrow.
