सूत उवाच ।
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु ब्राह्मणेषु समन्ततः ।
रुरुश्चुक्रोश गहनं वनं गत्वा सुदुःखितः ॥१॥
1. sūta uvāca ,
teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu brāhmaṇeṣu samantataḥ ,
ruruścukrośa gahanaṁ vanaṁ gatvā suduḥkhitaḥ.
1. sūtaḥ uvāca teṣu tatra upaviṣṭeṣu brāhmaṇeṣu samantataḥ
ruruḥ cukrośa gahanam vanam gatvā suduḥkhitaḥ
1. Sūta said: While those Brahmins were seated all around there, Ruru, extremely distressed, went to the dense forest and cried out.
शोकेनाभिहतः सोऽथ विलपन्करुणं बहु ।
अब्रवीद्वचनं शोचन्प्रियां चिन्त्य प्रमद्वराम् ॥२॥
2. śokenābhihataḥ so'tha vilapankaruṇaṁ bahu ,
abravīdvacanaṁ śocanpriyāṁ cintya pramadvarām.
2. śokenābhihataḥ saḥ atha vilapan karuṇam bahu
abravīt vacanam śocan priyām cintya Pramadvarām
2. Then, greatly afflicted by sorrow, he lamented profusely and piteously. Grieving and contemplating his beloved Pramadvarā, he spoke these words.
शेते सा भुवि तन्वङ्गी मम शोकविवर्धिनी ।
बान्धवानां च सर्वेषां किं नु दुःखमतः परम् ॥३॥
3. śete sā bhuvi tanvaṅgī mama śokavivardhinī ,
bāndhavānāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ kiṁ nu duḥkhamataḥ param.
3. śete sā bhuvi tanvaṅgī mama śokavivardhinī
bāndhavānām ca sarveṣām kim nu duḥkham ataḥ param
3. She, with her delicate body, who only increases my sorrow, lies on the ground. What greater grief than this could there be for all our relatives?
यदि दत्तं तपस्तप्तं गुरवो वा मया यदि ।
सम्यगाराधितास्तेन संजीवतु मम प्रिया ॥४॥
4. yadi dattaṁ tapastaptaṁ guravo vā mayā yadi ,
samyagārādhitāstena saṁjīvatu mama priyā.
4. yadi dattam tapaḥ taptam guravaḥ vā mayā yadi
samyak ārādhitāḥ tena saṃjīvatu mama priyā
4. If I have given gifts, or performed penance, or if my teachers have been duly honored by me, then by that merit, may my beloved (Pramadvarā) come back to life!
यथा जन्मप्रभृति वै यतात्माहं धृतव्रतः ।
प्रमद्वरा तथाद्यैव समुत्तिष्ठतु भामिनी ॥५॥
5. yathā janmaprabhṛti vai yatātmāhaṁ dhṛtavrataḥ ,
pramadvarā tathādyaiva samuttiṣṭhatu bhāminī.
5. yathā janmaprabhṛti vai yatātmā aham dhṛtavrataḥ
Pramadvarā tathā adya eva samuttiṣṭhatu bhāminī
5. Just as I have been self-controlled and steadfast in my vows from birth, so too may that radiant Pramadvarā rise up right now!
देवदूत उवाच ।
अभिधत्से ह यद्वाचा रुरो दुःखेन तन्मृषा ।
न तु मर्त्यस्य धर्मात्मन्नायुरस्ति गतायुषः ॥६॥
6. devadūta uvāca ,
abhidhatse ha yadvācā ruro duḥkhena tanmṛṣā ,
na tu martyasya dharmātmannāyurasti gatāyuṣaḥ.
6. Devadūtaḥ uvāca abhidhatse ha yat vācā Ruro duḥkhena tat
mṛṣā na tu martyasya dharmātman na āyuḥ asti gatāyuṣaḥ
6. The divine messenger said: 'O Ruru, what you say in your sorrow is indeed futile. O virtuous one, for a mortal whose life has departed, there is simply no more life.'
गतायुरेषा कृपणा गन्धर्वाप्सरसोः सुता ।
तस्माच्छोके मनस्तात मा कृथास्त्वं कथंचन ॥७॥
7. gatāyureṣā kṛpaṇā gandharvāpsarasoḥ sutā ,
tasmācchoke manastāta mā kṛthāstvaṁ kathaṁcana.
7. gatāyuḥ eṣā kṛpaṇā gandharva-apsarasoḥ sutā
tasmāt śoke manaḥ tāta mā kṛthāḥ tvam kathaṃcana
7. This pitiable daughter of a Gandharva and an Apsara has lost her life. Therefore, my dear, do not ever grieve in your mind.
उपायश्चात्र विहितः पूर्वं देवैर्महात्मभिः ।
तं यदीच्छसि कर्तुं त्वं प्राप्स्यसीमां प्रमद्वराम् ॥८॥
8. upāyaścātra vihitaḥ pūrvaṁ devairmahātmabhiḥ ,
taṁ yadīcchasi kartuṁ tvaṁ prāpsyasīmāṁ pramadvarām.
8. upāyaḥ ca atra vihitaḥ pūrvaṃ devaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ tam
yadi icchasi kartum tvam prāpsyasi imām pramadvarām
8. A remedy for this has been prescribed here previously by the great-souled gods. If you wish to perform that (remedy), you will obtain this Pramadvarā.
रुरुरुवाच ।
क उपायः कृतो देवैर्ब्रूहि तत्त्वेन खेचर ।
करिष्ये तं तथा श्रुत्वा त्रातुमर्हति मां भवान् ॥९॥
9. rururuvāca ,
ka upāyaḥ kṛto devairbrūhi tattvena khecara ,
kariṣye taṁ tathā śrutvā trātumarhati māṁ bhavān.
9. ruruḥ uvāca kaḥ upāyaḥ kṛtaḥ devaiḥ brūhi tattvena
khecara kariṣye tam tathā śrutvā trātum arhati mām bhavān
9. Ruru said: 'What remedy has been enacted by the gods? Tell me truly, O celestial being! Having heard that, I will perform it. May you be pleased to save me.'
देवदूत उवाच ।
आयुषोऽर्धं प्रयच्छस्व कन्यायै भृगुनन्दन ।
एवमुत्थास्यति रुरो तव भार्या प्रमद्वरा ॥१०॥
10. devadūta uvāca ,
āyuṣo'rdhaṁ prayacchasva kanyāyai bhṛgunandana ,
evamutthāsyati ruro tava bhāryā pramadvarā.
10. devadūtaḥ uvāca āyuṣaḥ ardham prayacchasva kanyāyai
bhṛgu-nandana evam utthāsyati ruro tava bhāryā pramadvarā
10. The divine messenger said: 'Give half of your life to the maiden, O son of Bhṛgu! Thus, O Ruru, your wife Pramadvarā will rise (come back to life).'
रुरुरुवाच ।
आयुषोऽर्धं प्रयच्छामि कन्यायै खेचरोत्तम ।
शृङ्गाररूपाभरणा उत्तिष्ठतु मम प्रिया ॥११॥
11. rururuvāca ,
āyuṣo'rdhaṁ prayacchāmi kanyāyai khecarottama ,
śṛṅgārarūpābharaṇā uttiṣṭhatu mama priyā.
11. ruruḥ uvāca āyuṣaḥ ardham prayacchāmi kanyāyai
khecara-uttama śṛṅgāra-rūpa-ābharaṇā uttiṣṭhatu mama priyā
11. Ruru said: 'I will give half of my life to the maiden, O best of celestial beings! May my beloved, adorned with beauty and ornaments, rise up!'
सूत उवाच ।
ततो गन्धर्वराजश्च देवदूतश्च सत्तमौ ।
धर्मराजमुपेत्येदं वचनं प्रत्यभाषताम् ॥१२॥
12. sūta uvāca ,
tato gandharvarājaśca devadūtaśca sattamau ,
dharmarājamupetyedaṁ vacanaṁ pratyabhāṣatām.
12. sūtaḥ uvāca tataḥ gandharvarājaḥ ca devadūtaḥ ca
sattamau dharmarājam upetya idam vacanam pratyabhāṣatām
12. Sūta said: Then, the king of the Gandharvas and Devadūta, both excellent beings, approached Dharmarāja and addressed him with these words.
धर्मराजायुषोऽर्धेन रुरोर्भार्या प्रमद्वरा ।
समुत्तिष्ठतु कल्याणी मृतैव यदि मन्यसे ॥१३॥
13. dharmarājāyuṣo'rdhena rurorbhāryā pramadvarā ,
samuttiṣṭhatu kalyāṇī mṛtaiva yadi manyase.
13. dharmarāja āyuṣaḥ ardhena ruroḥ bhāryā pramadvārā
samuttiṣṭhatu kalyāṇī mṛtā eva yadi manyase
13. O Dharmarāja, if you deem it appropriate, let Pramadvārā, the auspicious wife of Ruru, rise from death, by taking half of (Ruru's) lifespan.
धर्मराज उवाच ।
प्रमद्वरा रुरोर्भार्या देवदूत यदीच्छसि ।
उत्तिष्ठत्वायुषोऽर्धेन रुरोरेव समन्विता ॥१४॥
14. dharmarāja uvāca ,
pramadvarā rurorbhāryā devadūta yadīcchasi ,
uttiṣṭhatvāyuṣo'rdhena ruroreva samanvitā.
14. dharmarājaḥ uvāca pramadvārā ruroḥ bhāryā devadūta yadi
icchasi uttiṣṭhatu āyuṣaḥ ardhena ruroḥ eva samanvitā
14. Dharmarāja said: "O Devadūta, if you desire it, let Pramadvārā, Ruru's wife, indeed rise up, endowed with half of Ruru's own lifespan."
सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्ते ततः कन्या सोदतिष्ठत्प्रमद्वरा ।
रुरोस्तस्यायुषोऽर्धेन सुप्तेव वरवर्णिनी ॥१५॥
15. sūta uvāca ,
evamukte tataḥ kanyā sodatiṣṭhatpramadvarā ,
rurostasyāyuṣo'rdhena supteva varavarṇinī.
15. sūtaḥ uvāca evam ukte tataḥ kanyā sā udatiṣṭhat pramadvārā
ruroḥ tasya āyuṣaḥ ardhena suptā iva varavarṇinī
15. Sūta said: "When this was uttered, that maiden Pramadvārā, the beautiful woman, then rose up as if merely awaking from sleep, having received half of Ruru's lifespan."
एतद्दृष्टं भविष्ये हि रुरोरुत्तमतेजसः ।
आयुषोऽतिप्रवृद्धस्य भार्यार्थेऽर्धं ह्रसत्विति ॥१६॥
16. etaddṛṣṭaṁ bhaviṣye hi ruroruttamatejasaḥ ,
āyuṣo'tipravṛddhasya bhāryārthe'rdhaṁ hrasatviti.
16. etat dṛṣṭam bhaviṣye hi ruroḥ uttamatejasaḥ āyuṣaḥ
atipravṛddhasya bhāryāarthe ardham hrasatu iti
16. Indeed, it was foretold in the sacred texts that half of the greatly extended lifespan of Ruru, who possessed excellent vitality, would diminish for the sake of his wife.
तत इष्टेऽहनि तयोः पितरौ चक्रतुर्मुदा ।
विवाहं तौ च रेमाते परस्परहितैषिणौ ॥१७॥
17. tata iṣṭe'hani tayoḥ pitarau cakraturmudā ,
vivāhaṁ tau ca remāte parasparahitaiṣiṇau.
17. tataḥ iṣṭe ahani tayoḥ pitarau cakratuḥ mudā
vivāham tau ca remāte parasparahitaiṣiṇau
17. Then, on an auspicious day, their parents joyfully performed the marriage ceremony for them, and the two, wishing well for each other, delighted in it.
स लब्ध्वा दुर्लभां भार्यां पद्मकिञ्जल्कसप्रभाम् ।
व्रतं चक्रे विनाशाय जिह्मगानां धृतव्रतः ॥१८॥
18. sa labdhvā durlabhāṁ bhāryāṁ padmakiñjalkasaprabhām ,
vrataṁ cakre vināśāya jihmagānāṁ dhṛtavrataḥ.
18. sa labdhvā durlabhām bhāryām padmakiñjalkasaprabhām
vratam cakre vināśāya jihmagānām dhṛtavrataḥ
18. Having obtained such a rare wife, splendid like a lotus filament, he, firm in his vow, undertook a vow for the destruction of serpents.
स दृष्ट्वा जिह्मगान्सर्वांस्तीव्रकोपसमन्वितः ।
अभिहन्ति यथासन्नं गृह्य प्रहरणं सदा ॥१९॥
19. sa dṛṣṭvā jihmagānsarvāṁstīvrakopasamanvitaḥ ,
abhihanti yathāsannaṁ gṛhya praharaṇaṁ sadā.
19. sa dṛṣṭvā jihmagān sarvān tīvrakopasamanvitaḥ
abhihanti yathāsannam gṛhya praharaṇam sadā
19. Seeing all the serpents, and filled with intense rage, he would always seize a weapon nearby and strike them.
स कदाचिद्वनं विप्रो रुरुरभ्यागमन्महत् ।
शयानं तत्र चापश्यड्डुण्डुभं वयसान्वितम् ॥२०॥
20. sa kadācidvanaṁ vipro rururabhyāgamanmahat ,
śayānaṁ tatra cāpaśyaḍḍuṇḍubhaṁ vayasānvitam.
20. sa kadācit vanam vipraḥ ruruḥ abhyāgamat mahat
śayānam tatra ca apaśyat duṇḍubham vayasānvitam
20. One day, the brahmin Ruru went to a great forest. There he saw a Duṇḍubha (snake) lying down, endowed with age.
तत उद्यम्य दण्डं स कालदण्डोपमं तदा ।
अभ्यघ्नद्रुषितो विप्रस्तमुवाचाथ डुण्डुभः ॥२१॥
21. tata udyamya daṇḍaṁ sa kāladaṇḍopamaṁ tadā ,
abhyaghnadruṣito viprastamuvācātha ḍuṇḍubhaḥ.
21. tataḥ udyamya daṇḍam sa kāladaṇḍopamam tadā
abhyaghnat ruṣitaḥ vipraḥ tam uvāca atha duṇḍubhaḥ
21. Then, having raised a staff comparable to the staff of Death, that enraged brahmin (Ruru) struck it. Thereupon, the Duṇḍubha spoke to him.
नापराध्यामि ते किंचिदहमद्य तपोधन ।
संरम्भात्तत्किमर्थं मामभिहंसि रुषान्वितः ॥२२॥
22. nāparādhyāmi te kiṁcidahamadya tapodhana ,
saṁrambhāttatkimarthaṁ māmabhihaṁsi ruṣānvitaḥ.
22. na aparādhyāmi te kiñcit aham adya tapodhana |
saṃrambhāt tat kim artham mām abhihaṃsi ruṣā anvitaḥ
22. O ascetic, I have not offended you in any way today. Therefore, why, filled with rage and anger, do you wish to strike me?
