भीष्म उवाच ।
स चामन्त्र्योरगश्रेष्ठं ब्राह्मणः कृतनिश्चयः ।
दीक्षाकाङ्क्षी तदा राजंश्च्यवनं भार्गवं श्रितः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sa cāmantryoragaśreṣṭhaṁ brāhmaṇaḥ kṛtaniścayaḥ ,
dīkṣākāṅkṣī tadā rājaṁścyavanaṁ bhārgavaṁ śritaḥ.
1. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ ca āmantrya uragaśreṣṭham brāhmaṇaḥ
kṛtaniścayaḥ dīkṣākāṅkṣī tadā rājan cyavanam bhārgavam śritaḥ
1. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca rājan saḥ brāhmaṇaḥ kṛtaniścayaḥ ca uragaśreṣṭham
āmantrya tadā dīkṣākāṅkṣī bhārgavam cyavanam śritaḥ
1. Bhishma said: That brahmin, having become resolute, and having bid farewell to the foremost of serpents, then, desirous of spiritual initiation (dīkṣā), approached Chyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu, O King.
स तेन कृतसंस्कारो धर्ममेवोपतस्थिवान् ।
तथैव च कथामेतां राजन्कथितवांस्तदा ॥२॥
2. sa tena kṛtasaṁskāro dharmamevopatasthivān ,
tathaiva ca kathāmetāṁ rājankathitavāṁstadā.
2. saḥ tena kṛtasaṃskāraḥ dharmam eva upatasthivān
tathā eva ca kathām etām rājan kathitavān tadā
2. saḥ tena kṛtasaṃskāraḥ tadā dharmam eva upatasthivān
ca tathā eva rājan etām kathām kathitavān
2. He, having undergone the rites of purification (saṃskāra) performed by him, then steadfastly followed the natural law (dharma). Similarly, O king, he narrated this very story.
भार्गवेणापि राजेन्द्र जनकस्य निवेशने ।
कथैषा कथिता पुण्या नारदाय महात्मने ॥३॥
3. bhārgaveṇāpi rājendra janakasya niveśane ,
kathaiṣā kathitā puṇyā nāradāya mahātmane.

kathā eṣā kathitā puṇyā nāradāya mahātmane
3. rājendra eṣā puṇyā kathā bhārgaveṇa api
janakasya niveśane mahātmane nāradāya kathitā
3. O best of kings, this sacred story was also narrated by Bhārgava in Janaka's dwelling to the great-souled Nārada.
नारदेनापि राजेन्द्र देवेन्द्रस्य निवेशने ।
कथिता भरतश्रेष्ठ पृष्टेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥४॥
4. nāradenāpi rājendra devendrasya niveśane ,
kathitā bharataśreṣṭha pṛṣṭenākliṣṭakarmaṇā.
4. nāradena api rājendra devendrasya niveśane
kathitā bharataśreṣṭha pṛṣṭena akliṣṭakarmaṇā
4. rājendra bharataśreṣṭha nāradena api pṛṣṭena
akliṣṭakarmaṇā devendrasya niveśane kathitā
4. O best of kings, O best of Bharatas, this story was also narrated by Nārada, whose deeds (karma) are effortless, in the abode of the lord of gods, Indra, when he (Nārada) was questioned.
देवराजेन च पुरा कथैषा कथिता शुभा ।
समस्तेभ्यः प्रशस्तेभ्यो वसुभ्यो वसुधाधिप ॥५॥
5. devarājena ca purā kathaiṣā kathitā śubhā ,
samastebhyaḥ praśastebhyo vasubhyo vasudhādhipa.
5. devarājena ca purā kathā eṣā kathitā śubhā
samastebhyaḥ praśastebhyaḥ vasubhyaḥ vasudhādhipa
5. vasudhādhipa ca purā devarājena eṣā śubhā kathā
samastebhyaḥ praśastebhyaḥ vasubhyaḥ kathitā
5. And formerly, O lord of the earth, this auspicious story was narrated by the king of gods (Indra) to all the distinguished Vasus.
यदा च मम रामेण युद्धमासीत्सुदारुणम् ।
वसुभिश्च तदा राजन्कथेयं कथिता मम ॥६॥
6. yadā ca mama rāmeṇa yuddhamāsītsudāruṇam ,
vasubhiśca tadā rājankatheyaṁ kathitā mama.
6. yada ca mama rāmeṇa yuddham āsīt sudāruṇam
vasubhiḥ ca tadā rājan kathā iyam kathitā mama
6. rājan yada ca mama rāmeṇa sudāruṇam yuddham
āsīt tadā ca vasubhiḥ iyam kathā mama kathitā
6. And when my very terrible battle with Rāma took place, then, O King, this story was narrated to me by the Vasus.
पृच्छमानाय तत्त्वेन मया तुभ्यं विशां पते ।
कथेयं कथिता पुण्या धर्म्या धर्मभृतां वर ॥७॥
7. pṛcchamānāya tattvena mayā tubhyaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
katheyaṁ kathitā puṇyā dharmyā dharmabhṛtāṁ vara.
7. pṛcchamānāya tattvena mayā tubhyam viśām pate
kathā iyam kathitā puṇyā dharmyā dharmabhṛtām vara
7. viśām pate dharmabhṛtām vara tattvena pṛcchamānāya
tubhyam mayā puṇyā dharmyā iyam kathā kathitā
7. O lord of the people, O best among the upholders of natural law (dharma), this sacred story, which conforms to natural law (dharma), has been narrated by me to you, who inquired truthfully.
तदेष परमो धर्मो यन्मां पृच्छसि भारत ।
असन्नधीरनाकाङ्क्षी धर्मार्थकरणे नृप ॥८॥
8. tadeṣa paramo dharmo yanmāṁ pṛcchasi bhārata ,
asannadhīranākāṅkṣī dharmārthakaraṇe nṛpa.
8. tat eṣa paramaḥ dharmaḥ yat mām pṛcchasi bhārata
asannadhīḥ anākāṅkṣī dharma artha karaṇe nṛpa
8. bhārata yat mām pṛcchasi tat eṣa paramaḥ dharmaḥ
nṛpa dharma artha karaṇe asannadhīḥ anākāṅkṣī
8. Therefore, this, O Bhārata, is the supreme natural law (dharma), that you ask me; for a king (nṛpa) should not be dispirited or devoid of desire in fulfilling natural law (dharma) and pursuing prosperity (artha).
स च किल कृतनिश्चयो द्विजाग्र्यो भुजगपतिप्रतिदेशितार्थकृत्यः ।
यमनियमसमाहितो वनान्तं परिगणितोञ्छशिलाशनः प्रविष्टः ॥९॥
9. sa ca kila kṛtaniścayo dvijāgryo; bhujagapatipratideśitārthakṛtyaḥ ,
yamaniyamasamāhito vanāntaṁ; parigaṇitoñchaśilāśanaḥ praviṣṭaḥ.
9. saḥ ca kila kṛtaniścayaḥ dvijāgryaḥ
bhujagapati-pratideśita-artha-kṛtyaḥ
yama-niyama-samāhitaḥ vanāntam
parigaṇita-uñcha-śila-śanaḥ praviṣṭaḥ
9. ca kila kṛtaniścayaḥ dvijāgryaḥ
bhujagapati-pratideśita-artha-kṛtyaḥ
yama-niyama-samāhitaḥ parigaṇita-uñcha-śila-śanaḥ
saḥ vanāntam praviṣṭaḥ
9. And indeed, that foremost among the twice-born (dvija), having made a firm decision, and whose purpose and duties had been designated by the lord of serpents, entered the interior of the forest. He was composed in his ethical restraints (yama) and observances (niyama), and subsisted only on carefully gleaned and gathered grains.
