संजय उवाच ।
अर्जुनो वासुदेवश्च धन्विनौ परमार्चितौ ।
कामादन्यत्र संभूतौ सर्वाभावाय संमितौ ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
arjuno vāsudevaśca dhanvinau paramārcitau ,
kāmādanyatra saṁbhūtau sarvābhāvāya saṁmitau.
1. sañjaya uvāca | arjunaḥ vāsudevaḥ ca dhanvinau paramārcitau
| kāmāt anyatra saṃbhūtau sarvābhāvāya saṃmitau
1. Sañjaya said: "Arjuna and Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), both archers and highly revered, were manifested not from desire, but were destined for the complete annihilation of all."
द्यामन्तरं समास्थाय यथायुक्तं मनस्विनः ।
चक्रं तद्वासुदेवस्य मायया वर्तते विभो ॥२॥
2. dyāmantaraṁ samāsthāya yathāyuktaṁ manasvinaḥ ,
cakraṁ tadvāsudevasya māyayā vartate vibho.
2. dyām antaraṃ samāsthāya yathāyuktaṃ manasvinaḥ
| cakraṃ tat vāsudevasya māyayā vartate vibho
2. O mighty one, that discus of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), having taken its position in the intermediate region (of the sky), functions by means of (his) divine power (māyā), as is fitting for the great-minded one.
सापह्नवं पाण्डवेषु पाण्डवानां सुसंमतम् ।
सारासारबलं ज्ञात्वा तत्समासेन मे शृणु ॥३॥
3. sāpahnavaṁ pāṇḍaveṣu pāṇḍavānāṁ susaṁmatam ,
sārāsārabalaṁ jñātvā tatsamāsena me śṛṇu.
3. sa-apahṇavaṃ pāṇḍaveṣu pāṇḍavānāṃ su-saṃmatam
| sāra-asāra-balaṃ jñātvā tat samāsena me śṛṇu
3. Having understood the essential and non-essential aspects of their strength, which is both concealed by the Pāṇḍavas among themselves and yet highly approved by them, listen to that from me in brief.
नरकं शम्बरं चैव कंसं चैद्यं च माधवः ।
जितवान्घोरसंकाशान्क्रीडन्निव जनार्दनः ॥४॥
4. narakaṁ śambaraṁ caiva kaṁsaṁ caidyaṁ ca mādhavaḥ ,
jitavānghorasaṁkāśānkrīḍanniva janārdanaḥ.
4. narakaṃ śambaraṃ ca eva kaṃsaṃ caidyaṃ ca mādhavaḥ
jitavān ghorasaṃkāśān krīḍan iva janārdanaḥ
4. Mādhava (Krishna), Janārdana, conquered Naraka, Śambara, Kaṃsa, and Caidya - all terrifying figures - as if merely playing.
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च द्यां चैव पुरुषोत्तमः ।
मनसैव विशिष्टात्मा नयत्यात्मवशं वशी ॥५॥
5. pṛthivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca dyāṁ caiva puruṣottamaḥ ,
manasaiva viśiṣṭātmā nayatyātmavaśaṁ vaśī.
5. pṛthivīṃ ca antarikṣaṃ ca dyāṃ ca eva puruṣottamaḥ
manasā eva viśiṣṭātmā nayati ātmavaśaṃ vaśī
5. That supreme cosmic person (puruṣa), the distinguished self (ātman), who is the master (vaśī), brings the earth, the atmosphere, and the heavens under his own control merely by his mind.
भूयो भूयो हि यद्राजन्पृच्छसे पाण्डवान्प्रति ।
सारासारबलं ज्ञातुं तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥६॥
6. bhūyo bhūyo hi yadrājanpṛcchase pāṇḍavānprati ,
sārāsārabalaṁ jñātuṁ tanme nigadataḥ śṛṇu.
6. bhūyaḥ bhūyaḥ hi yat rājan pṛcchase pāṇḍavān
prati sārāsārablalaṃ jñātuṃ tat me nigadataḥ śṛṇu
6. O King, since you repeatedly ask about the Pāṇḍavas in order to know their essential and non-essential strength, listen to me as I speak of it.
एकतो वा जगत्कृत्स्नमेकतो वा जनार्दनः ।
सारतो जगतः कृत्स्नादतिरिक्तो जनार्दनः ॥७॥
7. ekato vā jagatkṛtsnamekato vā janārdanaḥ ,
sārato jagataḥ kṛtsnādatirikto janārdanaḥ.
7. ekataḥ vā jagat kṛtsnam ekataḥ vā janārdanaḥ
sārataḥ jagataḥ kṛtsnāt atiriktaḥ janārdanaḥ
7. On one side is the entire universe, and on the other side is Janārdana (Krishna). In essence, Janārdana is superior to the entire universe.
भस्म कुर्याज्जगदिदं मनसैव जनार्दनः ।
न तु कृत्स्नं जगच्छक्तं भस्म कर्तुं जनार्दनम् ॥८॥
8. bhasma kuryājjagadidaṁ manasaiva janārdanaḥ ,
na tu kṛtsnaṁ jagacchaktaṁ bhasma kartuṁ janārdanam.
8. bhasma kuryāt jagat idam manasā eva janārdanaḥ na
tu kṛtsnam jagat śaktam bhasma kartum janārdanam
8. Janardana could indeed reduce this entire world to ashes merely with his mind. Yet, the whole world is not capable of reducing Janardana to ashes.
यतः सत्यं यतो धर्मो यतो ह्रीरार्जवं यतः ।
ततो भवति गोविन्दो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ॥९॥
9. yataḥ satyaṁ yato dharmo yato hrīrārjavaṁ yataḥ ,
tato bhavati govindo yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ.
9. yataḥ satyam yataḥ dharmaḥ yataḥ hrīḥ ārjavam yataḥ
tataḥ bhavati govindaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
9. Where there is truth (satya), where there is righteousness (dharma), where there is modesty, and where there is straightforwardness, there is Govinda. Where there is Krishna, there indeed is victory.
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च दिवं च पुरुषोत्तमः ।
विचेष्टयति भूतात्मा क्रीडन्निव जनार्दनः ॥१०॥
10. pṛthivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca divaṁ ca puruṣottamaḥ ,
viceṣṭayati bhūtātmā krīḍanniva janārdanaḥ.
10. pṛthivīm ca antarikṣam ca divam ca puruṣottamaḥ
viceṣṭayati bhūtātmā krīḍan iva janārdanaḥ
10. Purushottama, the supreme person (puruṣa) and the indwelling self (ātman) of all beings – Janardana – sets the earth, the atmosphere, and the heavens in motion as if playfully.
स कृत्वा पाण्डवान्सत्रं लोकं संमोहयन्निव ।
अधर्मनिरतान्मूढान्दग्धुमिच्छति ते सुतान् ॥११॥
11. sa kṛtvā pāṇḍavānsatraṁ lokaṁ saṁmohayanniva ,
adharmaniratānmūḍhāndagdhumicchati te sutān.
11. saḥ kṛtvā pāṇḍavān satram lokam saṃmohayat iva
adharmaniratān mūḍhān dagdhum icchati te sutān
11. He (Krishna), having made the Pāṇḍavas his instrument (satra), as if deluding the world, desires to burn your foolish sons who are immersed in unrighteousness (adharma).
कालचक्रं जगच्चक्रं युगचक्रं च केशवः ।
आत्मयोगेन भगवान्परिवर्तयतेऽनिशम् ॥१२॥
12. kālacakraṁ jagaccakraṁ yugacakraṁ ca keśavaḥ ,
ātmayogena bhagavānparivartayate'niśam.
12. kālacakram jagaccakram yugacakram ca keśavaḥ
ātmayogena bhagavān parivartayate aniśam
12. The Lord (Bhagavan) Keshava, by His own divine power (ātmayoga), ceaselessly causes the wheel of time, the wheel of the universe, and the wheel of the ages to revolve.
कालस्य च हि मृत्योश्च जङ्गमस्थावरस्य च ।
ईशते भगवानेकः सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१३॥
13. kālasya ca hi mṛtyośca jaṅgamasthāvarasya ca ,
īśate bhagavānekaḥ satyametadbravīmi te.
13. kālasya ca hi mṛtyoḥ ca jaṅgamasthāvarasya ca
īśate bhagavān ekaḥ satyam etat bravīmi te
13. Indeed, the one Lord (Bhagavan) alone rules over time, death, and all that is moving and unmoving (animate and inanimate). This truth I declare to you.
ईशन्नपि महायोगी सर्वस्य जगतो हरिः ।
कर्माण्यारभते कर्तुं कीनाश इव दुर्बलः ॥१४॥
14. īśannapi mahāyogī sarvasya jagato hariḥ ,
karmāṇyārabhate kartuṁ kīnāśa iva durbalaḥ.
14. īśan api mahāyogī sarvasya jagataḥ hariḥ
karmāṇi ārabhate kartum kīnāśaḥ iva durbalaḥ
14. Even though Hari, the great Yogī (Mahayogī), is the ruler of the entire universe, He undertakes His actions (karma) as if He were a weak peasant.
तेन वञ्चयते लोकान्मायायोगेन केशवः ।
ये तमेव प्रपद्यन्ते न ते मुह्यन्ति मानवाः ॥१५॥
15. tena vañcayate lokānmāyāyogena keśavaḥ ,
ye tameva prapadyante na te muhyanti mānavāḥ.
15. tena vañcayate lokān māyāyogena keśavaḥ ye
tam eva prapadyante na te muhyanti mānavāḥ
15. By that mystic power (māyā), Keshava deludes people. However, those human beings who surrender to Him alone are not bewildered.
