Sañjaya said: When Arjuna had gone to confront Jayadratha (Saindhava), and the army was in disarray, and Sātyaki and Bhīmasena were (occupied elsewhere), your son (Duryodhana), contemplating many urgent tasks, hurried in a single chariot towards Droṇa.

The chariot of your son, endowed with extreme swiftness and moving with the speed of mind and wind, swiftly rushed towards Drona.

Having defeated all the mighty armies, those great chariot warriors, who are the tormentors of their enemies, have reached the Sindhu king's vicinity. And even there, all of them, still unconquered, continue to fight fiercely.

Droṇa said: 'O great king, there is much to consider regarding the action that must be taken; listen to me. Indeed, three great warriors of the Pāṇḍavas have been defeated. Nevertheless, the danger from their front is as great as the fear caused by their rear forces.'

I consider that situation more serious where Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna are present, for then the Bhārata army is attacked both from the front and from behind.

I consider that the action to be taken in this situation is the protection of the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha). O dear one, he is most to be protected by us, for he is terrified of the enraged Arjuna.

Indeed, those two heroes, Yuyudhana and Vrikodara, have reached Saindhava. This very dice game, born from Shakuni's intellect, has now come about.

Shakuni gambled away those terrible ones in the Kuru assembly. He, considering the dice to be (like) arrows, (forgot that) those (real) arrows were previously formidable and difficult to approach.

22.
Then Duryodhana, by the command of the preceptor, quickly proceeded with his followers, having roused himself (ātman) for a fierce deed (karma).

Indeed, the two princes of Pañcāla, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas, who were the mighty protectors of the chariot wheels, approached the army from the outer flank and went to Savyasācin (Arjuna).

Indeed, O great king, those two (Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas) had previously been prevented by Kṛtavarman; but, O king, (this occurred) when Arjuna entered your army with a desire to fight.

The mighty Bhārata (Duryodhana), accompanied by his two swift brothers, engaged in an excellent battle with those two (Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas).

Both of them, with their bows raised, renowned as great chariot-warriors and chief among kṣatriyas, rushed towards him in battle.

But Yudhāmanyu, greatly enraged and hastening, discharged thirty iron arrows into your son's chest.

O King, Duryodhana also killed the four horses of Uttamaujas, the Pāñcāla, and both of his charioteer-assistants.

But Uttamaujas, whose horses and charioteer had been killed in the battle, hastily ascended his brother Yudhāmanyu's chariot.

He, having seized his brother's chariot, struck Duryodhana's horses with numerous arrows. Those horses, thus killed, collapsed onto the earth.

As his horses fell, Yudhamanyu, swiftly and with a powerful arrow, cut off his (the opponent's) bow and quiver during the battle.

That great warrior (Duryodhana), your son, leapt from his chariot, its horses and charioteer having been slain. Seizing a mace, he charged towards the two Panchala princes.

Upon clearly seeing him (Duryodhana) rushing towards them, enraged and a conqueror of enemy cities, Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas both leapt from their chariot seat.

Then, the mace-wielder, with his mace, shattered that splendid gold-adorned excellent chariot, along with its horses, charioteer, and banner, in the battle.

And having killed him, your son - whose horses and charioteer had been slain - that tormentor of foes, quickly ascended the chariot of the Madra king.

But those two chief and greatly powerful princes of the Pañcālas, having mounted another chariot, approached Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
