वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः शांतनवो भीष्मो दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ।
केशवस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रोवाच भरतर्षभ ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śāṁtanavo bhīṣmo duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ,
keśavasya vacaḥ śrutvā provāca bharatarṣabha.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, having heard the words of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), spoke to the intolerant Duryodhana, O best of Bharatas.
कृष्णेन वाक्यमुक्तोऽसि सुहृदां शममिच्छता ।
अनुपश्यस्व तत्तात मा मन्युवशमन्वगाः ॥२॥
2. kṛṣṇena vākyamukto'si suhṛdāṁ śamamicchatā ,
anupaśyasva tattāta mā manyuvaśamanvagāḥ.
2. kṛṣṇena vākyam uktaḥ asi suhṛdām śamam icchatā
anupaśyasva tat tāta mā manyuvaśam anvagāḥ
2. This counsel has been given to you by Kṛṣṇa, who desires peace for his friends. So, my dear (son), reflect upon that, and do not succumb to the power of anger (manyu).
अकृत्वा वचनं तात केशवस्य महात्मनः ।
श्रेयो न जातु न सुखं न कल्याणमवाप्स्यसि ॥३॥
3. akṛtvā vacanaṁ tāta keśavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
śreyo na jātu na sukhaṁ na kalyāṇamavāpsyasi.
3. akṛtvā vacanam tāta keśavasya mahātmanaḥ
śreyaḥ na jātu na sukham na kalyāṇam avāpsyasi
3. My dear (son), by not following the advice of the great-souled Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), you will certainly never attain what is good, nor happiness, nor well-being.
धर्म्यमर्थं महाबाहुराह त्वां तात केशवः ।
तमर्थमभिपद्यस्व मा राजन्नीनशः प्रजाः ॥४॥
4. dharmyamarthaṁ mahābāhurāha tvāṁ tāta keśavaḥ ,
tamarthamabhipadyasva mā rājannīnaśaḥ prajāḥ.
4. dharmyam artham mahābāhuḥ āha tvām tāta keśavaḥ
| tam artham abhipadyasva mā rājan īnaśaḥ prajāḥ
4. O mighty-armed one, dear son, Keśava has spoken to you a purpose (artha) that is in accordance with natural law (dharma). Pursue that purpose, O king; do not destroy your subjects.
इमां श्रियं प्रज्वलितां भारतीं सर्वराजसु ।
जीवतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य दौरात्म्याद्भ्रंशयिष्यसि ॥५॥
5. imāṁ śriyaṁ prajvalitāṁ bhāratīṁ sarvarājasu ,
jīvato dhṛtarāṣṭrasya daurātmyādbhraṁśayiṣyasi.
5. imām śriyam prajvalitām bhāratīm sarvarājasu |
jīvataḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya daurātmyāt bhraṃśayiṣyasi
5. Because of your evil nature (daurātmya), you will deprive the living Dhṛtarāṣṭra of this blazing Indian glory, which is admired among all kings.
आत्मानं च सहामात्यं सपुत्रपशुबान्धवम् ।
सहमित्रमसद्बुद्ध्या जीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यसि ॥६॥
6. ātmānaṁ ca sahāmātyaṁ saputrapaśubāndhavam ,
sahamitramasadbuddhyā jīvitādbhraṁśayiṣyasi.
6. ātmānam ca sahāmātyam saputrapaśubāndhavam |
samitram asat-buddhyā jīvitāt bhraṃśayiṣyasi
6. And by your evil judgment (asadbuddhi), you will deprive your very self (ātman), along with your ministers, sons, cattle, and relatives, as well as your friends, of life.
अतिक्रामन्केशवस्य तथ्यं वचनमर्थवत् ।
पितुश्च भरतश्रेष्ठ विदुरस्य च धीमतः ॥७॥
7. atikrāmankeśavasya tathyaṁ vacanamarthavat ,
pituśca bharataśreṣṭha vidurasya ca dhīmataḥ.
7. atikrāman keśavasya tathyam vacanam arthavat |
pituḥ ca bharataśreṣṭha vidurasya ca dhīmataḥ
7. O best among the Bharatas, (you are) disregarding the true and meaningful counsel (artha) of Keśava, and of your father, and of the wise Vidura.
मा कुलघ्नोऽन्तपुरुषो दुर्मतिः कापथं गमः ।
पितरं मातरं चैव वृद्धौ शोकाय मा ददः ॥८॥
8. mā kulaghno'ntapuruṣo durmatiḥ kāpathaṁ gamaḥ ,
pitaraṁ mātaraṁ caiva vṛddhau śokāya mā dadaḥ.
8. mā kulaghnaḥ anta-puruṣaḥ durmatiḥ kāpatham gamaḥ
pitaram mātaram ca eva vṛddhau śokāya mā dadaḥ
8. O you who are vile, ill-minded, and a destroyer of your family, do not tread the wrong path. Do not subject your aged father and mother to sorrow.
अथ द्रोणोऽब्रवीत्तत्र दुर्योधनमिदं वचः ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नं निःश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः ॥९॥
9. atha droṇo'bravīttatra duryodhanamidaṁ vacaḥ ,
amarṣavaśamāpannaṁ niḥśvasantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ.
9. atha droṇaḥ abravīt tatra duryodhanam idam vacaḥ
amarṣa-vaśam āpannam niḥśvasantam punaḥ punaḥ
9. Then Drona spoke these words there to Duryodhana, who was overwhelmed by indignation and repeatedly sighing.
धर्मार्थयुक्तं वचनमाह त्वां तात केशवः ।
तथा भीष्मः शांतनवस्तज्जुषस्व नराधिप ॥१०॥
10. dharmārthayuktaṁ vacanamāha tvāṁ tāta keśavaḥ ,
tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavastajjuṣasva narādhipa.
10. dharma-artha-yuktam vacanam āha tvām tāta keśavaḥ
tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ tat juṣasva narādhipa
10. O dear one, Keśava has spoken to you words imbued with natural law (dharma) and practical wisdom. Likewise, Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, has also spoken. Therefore, O king of men, accept that (counsel).
प्राज्ञौ मेधाविनौ दान्तावर्थकामौ बहुश्रुतौ ।
आहतुस्त्वां हितं वाक्यं तदादत्स्व परंतप ॥११॥
11. prājñau medhāvinau dāntāvarthakāmau bahuśrutau ,
āhatustvāṁ hitaṁ vākyaṁ tadādatsva paraṁtapa.
11. prājñau medhāvinau dāntau artha-kāmau bahuśrutau
āhatuḥ tvām hitam vākyam tat ādatva paraṃtapa
11. These two wise, intelligent, self-controlled, skilled in practical matters, and very learned individuals have spoken beneficial words to you. Therefore, O scorcher of foes, accept that (counsel).
अनुतिष्ठ महाप्राज्ञ कृष्णभीष्मौ यदूचतुः ।
मा वचो लघुबुद्धीनां समास्थास्त्वं परंतप ॥१२॥
12. anutiṣṭha mahāprājña kṛṣṇabhīṣmau yadūcatuḥ ,
mā vaco laghubuddhīnāṁ samāsthāstvaṁ paraṁtapa.
12. anuthiṣṭha mahāprājña kṛṣṇabhīṣmau yat ūcatuḥ mā
vacaḥ laghubuddhīnām samāsthāḥ tvam paraṃtapa
12. O greatly wise one, act according to what Kṛṣṇa and Bhīṣma have advised. O tormentor of foes, do not rely on the words of those with shallow intellect.
ये त्वां प्रोत्साहयन्त्येते नैते कृत्याय कर्हिचित् ।
वैरं परेषां ग्रीवायां प्रतिमोक्ष्यन्ति संयुगे ॥१३॥
13. ye tvāṁ protsāhayantyete naite kṛtyāya karhicit ,
vairaṁ pareṣāṁ grīvāyāṁ pratimokṣyanti saṁyuge.
13. ye tvām protsāhayanti ete na ete kṛtyāya karhicit
vairam pareṣām grīvāyām pratimo kṣyanti saṃyuge
13. These who encourage you are never truly for your welfare (kṛtya). In battle, they will only cast the animosity of others upon your own neck.
मा कुरूञ्जीघनः सर्वान्पुत्रान्भ्रातॄंस्तथैव च ।
वासुदेवार्जुनौ यत्र विद्ध्यजेयं बलं हि तत् ॥१४॥
14. mā kurūñjīghanaḥ sarvānputrānbhrātṝṁstathaiva ca ,
vāsudevārjunau yatra viddhyajeyaṁ balaṁ hi tat.
14. mā kurūn jīghanaḥ sarvān putrān bhrātṝn tathā eva
ca vāsudevārjunau yatra viddhi ajeyam balam hi tat
14. Do not kill all the Kauravas, your sons, and your brothers as well. Understand that where Kṛṣṇa (Vāsudeva) and Arjuna are present, that indeed is unconquerable strength.
एतच्चैव मतं सत्यं सुहृदोः कृष्णभीष्मयोः ।
यदि नादास्यसे तात पश्चात्तप्स्यसि भारत ॥१५॥
15. etaccaiva mataṁ satyaṁ suhṛdoḥ kṛṣṇabhīṣmayoḥ ,
yadi nādāsyase tāta paścāttapsyasi bhārata.
15. etat ca eva matam satyam suhṛdoḥ kṛṣṇabhīṣmayoḥ
yadi na adāsyase tāta paścāt tapsyasi bhārata
15. This indeed is the true counsel of the two well-wishers, Kṛṣṇa and Bhīṣma. If you do not accept this, dear one, you will regret it later, O descendant of Bharata.
यथोक्तं जामदग्न्येन भूयानेव ततोऽर्जुनः ।
कृष्णो हि देवकीपुत्रो देवैरपि दुरुत्सहः ॥१६॥
16. yathoktaṁ jāmadagnyena bhūyāneva tato'rjunaḥ ,
kṛṣṇo hi devakīputro devairapi durutsahaḥ.
16. yathā uktam jāmadagnyena bhūyān eva tataḥ arjunaḥ
kṛṣṇaḥ hi devakīputraḥ devaiḥ api durutsahaḥ
16. As stated by Paraśurāma, Arjuna is indeed greater than him. And Krishna, the son of Devaki, is truly irresistible even to the gods.
किं ते सुखप्रियेणेह प्रोक्तेन भरतर्षभ ।
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ।
न हि त्वामुत्सहे वक्तुं भूयो भरतसत्तम ॥१७॥
17. kiṁ te sukhapriyeṇeha proktena bharatarṣabha ,
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ yathecchasi tathā kuru ,
na hi tvāmutsahe vaktuṁ bhūyo bharatasattama.
17. kim te sukhapriyeṇa iha proktena
bharatarṣabha etat te sarvam ākhyātam
yathā icchasi tathā kuru na hi tvām
utsahe vaktum bhūyaḥ bharatasattama
17. O best of Bharatas, what is the use of speaking to you here with pleasant words? All this has been told to you; do as you wish. Indeed, I cannot speak to you further, O best of the Bharatas.
तस्मिन्वाक्यान्तरे वाक्यं क्षत्तापि विदुरोऽब्रवीत् ।
दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य धार्तराष्ट्रममर्षणम् ॥१८॥
18. tasminvākyāntare vākyaṁ kṣattāpi viduro'bravīt ,
duryodhanamabhiprekṣya dhārtarāṣṭramamarṣaṇam.
18. tasmin vākyāntare vākyam kṣattā api viduraḥ abravīt
duryodhanam abhiprekṣya dhārtarāṣṭram amarṣaṇam
18. In the midst of that speech, even Vidura, the charioteer, spoke, addressing Duryodhana, the intolerant son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
दुर्योधन न शोचामि त्वामहं भरतर्षभ ।
इमौ तु वृद्धौ शोचामि गान्धारीं पितरं च ते ॥१९॥
19. duryodhana na śocāmi tvāmahaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
imau tu vṛddhau śocāmi gāndhārīṁ pitaraṁ ca te.
19. duryodhana na śocāmi tvām aham bharatarṣabha
imau tu vṛddhau śocāmi gāndhārīm pitaram ca te
19. O Duryodhana, O best of the Bharatas, I do not grieve for you. But I grieve for these two old ones: Gandhari and your father.
यावनाथौ चरिष्येते त्वया नाथेन दुर्हृदा ।
हतमित्रौ हतामात्यौ लूनपक्षाविव द्विजौ ॥२०॥
20. yāvanāthau cariṣyete tvayā nāthena durhṛdā ,
hatamitrau hatāmātyau lūnapakṣāviva dvijau.
20. yāvanāthau cariṣyete tvayā nāthena durhṛdā
hatamitrau hatāmātyau lūnapakṣau iva dvijau
20. Those two will wander unprotected, made so by you, their malevolent lord; they will have lost their friends and ministers, just like two birds whose wings have been clipped.
भिक्षुकौ विचरिष्येते शोचन्तौ पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
कुलघ्नमीदृशं पापं जनयित्वा कुपूरुषम् ॥२१॥
21. bhikṣukau vicariṣyete śocantau pṛthivīmimām ,
kulaghnamīdṛśaṁ pāpaṁ janayitvā kupūruṣam.
21. bhikṣukau vicarṣyete śocantau pṛthivīm imām
kulaghnam īdṛśam pāpam janayitvā kupūruṣam
21. Having begotten such a sinful, family-destroying, wicked man, those two will wander the earth as beggars, lamenting.
अथ दुर्योधनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत ।
आसीनं भ्रातृभिः सार्धं राजभिः परिवारितम् ॥२२॥
22. atha duryodhanaṁ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata ,
āsīnaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ rājabhiḥ parivāritam.
22. atha duryodhanam rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abhyabhāṣata
āsīnam bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham rājabhiḥ parivāritam
22. Then, King Dhritarashtra addressed Duryodhana, who was seated with his brothers and surrounded by other kings.
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं शौरिणोक्तं महात्मना ।
आदत्स्व शिवमत्यन्तं योगक्षेमवदव्ययम् ॥२३॥
23. duryodhana nibodhedaṁ śauriṇoktaṁ mahātmanā ,
ādatsva śivamatyantaṁ yogakṣemavadavyayam.
23. duryodhana nibodha idam śauriṇā uktam mahātmanā
ādatva śivam atyantam yogakṣemavat avyayam
23. O Duryodhana, understand this, which was spoken by the great-souled one (mahātman) Shauri (Krishna). Accept the ultimate welfare, which ensures both gain and security (yogakṣema) and is imperishable.
अनेन हि सहायेन कृष्णेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ।
इष्टान्सर्वानभिप्रायान्प्राप्स्यामः सर्वराजसु ॥२४॥
24. anena hi sahāyena kṛṣṇenākliṣṭakarmaṇā ,
iṣṭānsarvānabhiprāyānprāpsyāmaḥ sarvarājasu.
24. anena hi sahāyena kṛṣṇena akliṣṭakarmaṇā
iṣṭān sarvān abhiprāyān prāpsyāmaḥ sarvarājasu
24. Indeed, with Kṛṣṇa, whose actions (karma) are effortless, as our helper, we shall achieve all our desired objectives among all kings.
सुसंहितः केशवेन गच्छ तात युधिष्ठिरम् ।
चर स्वस्त्ययनं कृत्स्नं भारतानामनामयम् ॥२५॥
25. susaṁhitaḥ keśavena gaccha tāta yudhiṣṭhiram ,
cara svastyayanaṁ kṛtsnaṁ bhāratānāmanāmayam.
25. susaṃhitaḥ keśavena gaccha tāta yudhiṣṭhiram
cara svastyayanam kṛtsnam bhāratānām anāmayam
25. O dear one (tāta), go to Yudhiṣṭhira, having been well-united with Keśava [Kṛṣṇa]. Perform the entire auspicious rite for the Bhāratas, ensuring their freedom from affliction.
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन तात गच्छस्व संगमम् ।
कालप्राप्तमिदं मन्ये मा त्वं दुर्योधनातिगाः ॥२६॥
26. vāsudevena tīrthena tāta gacchasva saṁgamam ,
kālaprāptamidaṁ manye mā tvaṁ duryodhanātigāḥ.
26. vāsudevena tīrthena tāta gacchasva saṅgamam
kālaprāptam idam manye mā tvam duryodhana atigāḥ
26. O dear one (tāta), go to the meeting through Vāsudeva [Kṛṣṇa] as your sacred guide. I believe this is the opportune moment. Do not, however, go against Duryodhana.
शमं चेद्याचमानं त्वं प्रत्याख्यास्यसि केशवम् ।
त्वदर्थमभिजल्पन्तं न तवास्त्यपराभवः ॥२७॥
27. śamaṁ cedyācamānaṁ tvaṁ pratyākhyāsyasi keśavam ,
tvadarthamabhijalpantaṁ na tavāstyaparābhavaḥ.
27. śamam cet yācamānam tvam pratyākhyāsyasi keśavam
tvadartham abhijalpantam na tava asti aparābhavaḥ
27. If you reject Keśava [Kṛṣṇa], who is asking for peace (śama) and speaking on your behalf, then it is not that you will escape defeat (i.e., you will certainly face defeat).
