विभाण्डक उवाच ।
रक्षांसि चैतानि चरन्ति पुत्र रूपेण तेनाद्भुतदर्शनेन ।
अतुल्यरूपाण्यतिघोरवन्ति विघ्नं सदा तपसश्चिन्तयन्ति ॥१॥
1. vibhāṇḍaka uvāca ,
rakṣāṁsi caitāni caranti putra; rūpeṇa tenādbhutadarśanena ,
atulyarūpāṇyatighoravanti; vighnaṁ sadā tapasaścintayanti.

1. Vibhāṇḍaka said: "Son, these rākṣasas (demons) move about in that amazing form. They are of incomparable appearance, exceedingly terrible, and always contemplate creating obstacles to ascetic practices (tapas)."
सुरूपरूपाणि च तानि तात प्रलोभयन्ते विविधैरुपायैः ।
सुखाच्च लोकाच्च निपातयन्ति तान्युग्रकर्माणि मुनीन्वनेषु ॥२॥
2. surūparūpāṇi ca tāni tāta; pralobhayante vividhairupāyaiḥ ,
sukhācca lokācca nipātayanti; tānyugrakarmāṇi munīnvaneṣu.
2. surūparūpāṇi ca tāni tāta pralobhayante vividhaiḥ upāyaiḥ
sukhāt ca lokāt ca nipātayanti tāni ugrakarmāṇi munīn vaneṣu
2. And those beautiful-looking ones, my dear child, entice (monks) with various means. Those performing fierce deeds make the sages (munis) in the forests fall from happiness and from their spiritual world.
न तानि सेवेत मुनिर्यतात्मा सतां लोकान्प्रार्थयानः कथंचित् ।
कृत्वा विघ्नं तापसानां रमन्ते पापाचारास्तपसस्तान्यपाप ॥३॥
3. na tāni seveta muniryatātmā; satāṁ lokānprārthayānaḥ kathaṁcit ,
kṛtvā vighnaṁ tāpasānāṁ ramante; pāpācārāstapasastānyapāpa.
3. na tāni sevet muniḥ yatātmā
satām lokān prārthayānaḥ kathancit
kṛtvā vighnaṃ tāpasānām
ramante pāpācārāḥ tapasaḥ tāni apāpa
3. A sage (muni) who has controlled himself and seeks the worlds of the virtuous should not associate with them in any way. Those whose conduct is sinful delight in creating obstacles for ascetics (tapasvins); such (obstacles) are sinful regarding their (the ascetics') penance (tapas).
असज्जनेनाचरितानि पुत्र पापान्यपेयानि मधूनि तानि ।
माल्यानि चैतानि न वै मुनीनां स्मृतानि चित्रोज्ज्वलगन्धवन्ति ॥४॥
4. asajjanenācaritāni putra; pāpānyapeyāni madhūni tāni ,
mālyāni caitāni na vai munīnāṁ; smṛtāni citrojjvalagandhavanti.
4. asajjanena ācaritāni putra pāpāni apeyāni madhūni tāni mālyāni
ca etāni na vai munīnām smṛtāni citroujjvalagandhavanti
4. Son, those sins committed by evil people are like honey that should not be drunk. And these garlands, which possess various brilliant fragrances, are certainly not considered appropriate for sages (munis).
लोमश उवाच ।
रक्षांसि तानीति निवार्य पुत्रं विभाण्डकस्तां मृगयां बभूव ।
नासादयामास यदा त्र्यहेण तदा स पर्याववृतेऽऽश्रमाय ॥५॥
5. lomaśa uvāca ,
rakṣāṁsi tānīti nivārya putraṁ; vibhāṇḍakastāṁ mṛgayāṁ babhūva ,
nāsādayāmāsa yadā tryaheṇa; tadā sa paryāvavṛte''śramāya.
5. lomaśaḥ uvāca rakṣāṃsi tāni iti
nivārya putram vibhāṇḍakaḥ tām mṛgayām
babhūva na āsādayāmāsa yadā
tryaheṇa tadā saḥ paryāvavṛte āśramāya
5. Lomasha said: Vibhāṇḍaka, preventing his son from going and thinking "those are rākṣasas," went on that hunt himself. When he could not find anything for three days, he then returned to his hermitage (āśrama).
यदा पुनः काश्यपो वै जगाम फलान्याहर्तुं विधिना श्रामणेन ।
तदा पुनर्लोभयितुं जगाम सा वेशयोषा मुनिमृश्यशृङ्गम् ॥६॥
6. yadā punaḥ kāśyapo vai jagāma; phalānyāhartuṁ vidhinā śrāmaṇena ,
tadā punarlobhayituṁ jagāma; sā veśayoṣā munimṛśyaśṛṅgam.

phalāni āhartum vidhinā śrāmaṇena
tadā punaḥ lobhayitum jagāma
sā veśayoṣā munim ṛṣyaśṛṅgam
6. When Kaśyapa again went to gather fruits, following the ascetic's practice, that courtesan once more went to tempt the sage Ṛṣyaśṛṅga.
दृष्ट्वैव तामृश्यशृङ्गः प्रहृष्टः संभ्रान्तरूपोऽभ्यपतत्तदानीम् ।
प्रोवाच चैनां भवतोऽऽश्रमाय गच्छाव यावन्न पिता ममैति ॥७॥
7. dṛṣṭvaiva tāmṛśyaśṛṅgaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ; saṁbhrāntarūpo'bhyapatattadānīm ,
provāca caināṁ bhavato''śramāya; gacchāva yāvanna pitā mamaiti.
7. dṛṣṭvā eva tām ṛṣyaśṛṅgaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ
saṃbhrānta rūpaḥ abhyapatat tadānīm
provāca ca enām bhavataḥ āśramāya
gacchāva yāvat na pitā mama eti
7. Upon seeing her, Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, greatly delighted and looking bewildered, rushed towards her at that moment. He then said to her, "Let us go to your hermitage (āśrama) before my father returns."
ततो राजन्काश्यपस्यैकपुत्रं प्रवेश्य योगेन विमुच्य नावम् ।
प्रलोभयन्त्यो विविधैरुपायैराजग्मुरङ्गाधिपतेः समीपम् ॥८॥
8. tato rājankāśyapasyaikaputraṁ; praveśya yogena vimucya nāvam ,
pralobhayantyo vividhairupāyai;rājagmuraṅgādhipateḥ samīpam.

praveśya yogena vimucya nāvam
pralobhayantyaḥ vividhaiḥ upāyaiḥ

8. Then, O King, having skillfully (yoga) brought the sole son of Kaśyapa (Ṛṣyaśṛṅga) onto their boat and then setting it free, they (the courtesans), tempting him with various stratagems, arrived near the king of Aṅga.
संस्थाप्य तामाश्रमदर्शने तु संतारितां नावमतीव शुभ्राम् ।
तीरादुपादाय तथैव चक्रे राजाश्रमं नाम वनं विचित्रम् ॥९॥
9. saṁsthāpya tāmāśramadarśane tu; saṁtāritāṁ nāvamatīva śubhrām ,
tīrādupādāya tathaiva cakre; rājāśramaṁ nāma vanaṁ vicitram.

9. Having placed that exceedingly pure boat, which had been brought across, in view of the hermitage (āśrama), the king, having taken (resources) from the bank, likewise created a beautiful forest named Rājāśrama.
अन्तःपुरे तं तु निवेश्य राजा विभाण्डकस्यात्मजमेकपुत्रम् ।
ददर्श देवं सहसा प्रवृष्टमापूर्यमाणं च जगज्जलेन ॥१०॥
10. antaḥpure taṁ tu niveśya rājā; vibhāṇḍakasyātmajamekaputram ,
dadarśa devaṁ sahasā pravṛṣṭa;māpūryamāṇaṁ ca jagajjalena.
10. antaḥpure tam tu niveśya rājā vibhāṇḍakasya ātmajam ekaputram
dadarśa devam sahasā pravṛṣṭam āpūryamāṇam ca jagat jalena
10. Having settled him, the only son of Vibhāṇḍaka, in the inner palace, the king suddenly saw that the god (Indra) had sent rain and the world was being filled with water.
स लोमपादः परिपूर्णकामः सुतां ददावृश्यशृङ्गाय शान्ताम् ।
क्रोधप्रतीकारकरं च चक्रे गोभिश्च मार्गेष्वभिकर्षणं च ॥११॥
11. sa lomapādaḥ paripūrṇakāmaḥ; sutāṁ dadāvṛśyaśṛṅgāya śāntām ,
krodhapratīkārakaraṁ ca cakre; gobhiśca mārgeṣvabhikarṣaṇaṁ ca.

sutām dadau ṛṣyaśṛṅgāya śāntām
krodhapratīkārakaram ca cakre
gobhiḥ ca mārgeṣu abhikarṣaṇam ca
11. With his desires completely fulfilled, King Lomapāda gave his daughter Śāntā to Ṛṣyaśṛṅga. He also arranged for measures to counteract anger and for the ceremonial pulling (plowing) with cows on the roads.
विभाण्डकस्याव्रजतः स राजा पशून्प्रभूतान्पशुपांश्च वीरान् ।
समादिशत्पुत्रगृद्धी महर्षिर्विभाण्डकः परिपृच्छेद्यदा वः ॥१२॥
12. vibhāṇḍakasyāvrajataḥ sa rājā; paśūnprabhūtānpaśupāṁśca vīrān ,
samādiśatputragṛddhī maharṣi;rvibhāṇḍakaḥ paripṛcchedyadā vaḥ.
12. vibhāṇḍakasya avrajataḥ sa rājā
paśūn prabhūtān paśupān ca vīrān
samādiśat putragṛddhī maharṣiḥ
vibhāṇḍakaḥ paripṛcchet yadā vaḥ
12. That King (Lomapāda), for Vibhāṇḍaka who had not yet returned, entrusted abundant cattle and brave herdsmen, commanding them (to be prepared) for when the great sage Vibhāṇḍaka, longing for his son, might inquire of them.
स वक्तव्यः प्राञ्जलिभिर्भवद्भिः पुत्रस्य ते पशवः कर्षणं च ।
किं ते प्रियं वै क्रियतां महर्षे दासाः स्म सर्वे तव वाचि बद्धाः ॥१३॥
13. sa vaktavyaḥ prāñjalibhirbhavadbhiḥ; putrasya te paśavaḥ karṣaṇaṁ ca ,
kiṁ te priyaṁ vai kriyatāṁ maharṣe; dāsāḥ sma sarve tava vāci baddhāḥ.
13. saḥ vaktavyaḥ prāñjalibhiḥ bhavadbhiḥ
putrasya te paśavaḥ karṣaṇam ca
kim te priyam vai kriyatām maharṣe
dāsāḥ sma sarve tava vāci baddhāḥ
13. You, with folded hands, should inform him about your son's cattle and farming. O great sage, what is truly pleasing to you, let that be done. We are all your servants, bound by your command.
अथोपायात्स मुनिश्चण्डकोपः स्वमाश्रमं मूलफलानि गृह्य ।
अन्वेषमाणश्च न तत्र पुत्रं ददर्श चुक्रोध ततो भृशं सः ॥१४॥
14. athopāyātsa muniścaṇḍakopaḥ; svamāśramaṁ mūlaphalāni gṛhya ,
anveṣamāṇaśca na tatra putraṁ; dadarśa cukrodha tato bhṛśaṁ saḥ.
14. atha upāyāt saḥ muniḥ caṇḍakopaḥ
svam āśramam mūlaphalāni gṛhya
anveṣamāṇaḥ ca na tatra putram
dadarśa cukrodha tataḥ bhṛśam saḥ
14. Then that sage, filled with fierce anger, went to his hermitage, having gathered roots and fruits. Searching there, he did not find his son, and consequently, he became exceedingly furious.
ततः स कोपेन विदीर्यमाण आशङ्कमानो नृपतेर्विधानम् ।
जगाम चम्पां प्रदिधक्षमाणस्तमङ्गराजं विषयं च तस्य ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa kopena vidīryamāṇa; āśaṅkamāno nṛpatervidhānam ,
jagāma campāṁ pradidhakṣamāṇa;stamaṅgarājaṁ viṣayaṁ ca tasya.
15. tataḥ saḥ kopena vidīryamāṇaḥ āśaṅkamānaḥ nṛpateḥ vidhānam
jagāma campām pradidhukṣamāṇaḥ tam aṅgarājam viṣayam ca tasya
15. Then he, being overcome with anger and suspecting the king's action, went to Campā, intending to burn that king of Anga and his kingdom (viṣaya).
स वै श्रान्तः क्षुधितः काश्यपस्तान्घोषान्समासादितवान्समृद्धान् ।
गोपैश्च तैर्विधिवत्पूज्यमानो राजेव तां रात्रिमुवास तत्र ॥१६॥
16. sa vai śrāntaḥ kṣudhitaḥ kāśyapastā;nghoṣānsamāsāditavānsamṛddhān ,
gopaiśca tairvidhivatpūjyamāno; rājeva tāṁ rātrimuvāsa tatra.
16. saḥ vai śrāntaḥ kṣudhitaḥ kāśyapaḥ
tān ghoṣān samāsāditavān samṛddhān
gopaiḥ ca taiḥ vidhivat pūjyamānaḥ
rājā iva tām rātrim uvāsa tatra
16. Indeed, that exhausted and hungry Kāśyapa reached those prosperous cowherd settlements (ghoṣa). Honored ritualistically by those cowherds, he stayed there that night like a king.
संप्राप्य सत्कारमतीव तेभ्यः प्रोवाच कस्य प्रथिताः स्थ सौम्याः ।
ऊचुस्ततस्तेऽभ्युपगम्य सर्वे धनं तवेदं विहितं सुतस्य ॥१७॥
17. saṁprāpya satkāramatīva tebhyaḥ; provāca kasya prathitāḥ stha saumyāḥ ,
ūcustataste'bhyupagamya sarve; dhanaṁ tavedaṁ vihitaṁ sutasya.
17. samprapya satkaram atīva tebhyaḥ
provāca kasya prathitāḥ stha saumyāḥ
| ūcuḥ tataḥ te abhyupagamya sarve
dhanam tava idam vihitam sutasya
17. Having received great hospitality from them, he asked, "Gentle ones, whose renowned (people) are you?" Then, all of them, approaching him, replied, "This wealth has been designated for your son."
देशे तु देशे तु स पूज्यमानस्तांश्चैव शृण्वन्मधुरान्प्रलापान् ।
प्रशान्तभूयिष्ठरजाः प्रहृष्टः समाससादाङ्गपतिं पुरस्थम् ॥१८॥
18. deśe tu deśe tu sa pūjyamāna;stāṁścaiva śṛṇvanmadhurānpralāpān ,
praśāntabhūyiṣṭharajāḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ; samāsasādāṅgapatiṁ purastham.
18. deśe tu deśe tu sa pūjyamānaḥ tān
ca eva śṛṇvan madhurān pralāpān
| praśāntabhūyiṣṭharajāḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ
samāsasāda aṅgapatim purastham
18. Being honored in every land, and hearing those sweet words, his passion (rajas) greatly calmed, he became joyful and approached Angapati, who was present in the city.
संपूजितस्तेन नरर्षभेण ददर्श पुत्रं दिवि देवं यथेन्द्रम् ।
शान्तां स्नुषां चैव ददर्श तत्र सौदामिनीमुच्चरन्तीं यथैव ॥१९॥
19. saṁpūjitastena nararṣabheṇa; dadarśa putraṁ divi devaṁ yathendram ,
śāntāṁ snuṣāṁ caiva dadarśa tatra; saudāminīmuccarantīṁ yathaiva.
19. sampūjitaḥ tena nararṣabheṇa dadarśa
putram divi devam yathā indram
| śāntām snuṣām ca eva dadarśa tatra
saudāminīm uccarantīm yathā eva
19. Honored by that foremost man, he saw his son in heaven like a god, like Indra. And he also saw his tranquil daughter-in-law there, like a flashing lightning bolt.
ग्रामांश्च घोषांश्च सुतं च दृष्ट्वा शान्तां च शान्तोऽस्य परः स कोपः ।
चकार तस्मै परमं प्रसादं विभाण्डको भूमिपतेर्नरेन्द्र ॥२०॥
20. grāmāṁśca ghoṣāṁśca sutaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā; śāntāṁ ca śānto'sya paraḥ sa kopaḥ ,
cakāra tasmai paramaṁ prasādaṁ; vibhāṇḍako bhūmipaternarendra.
20. grāmān ca ghoṣān ca sutam ca dṛṣṭvā
śāntām ca śāntaḥ asya paraḥ sa
kopaḥ | cakāra tasmai paramam prasādam
vibhāṇḍakaḥ bhūmipateḥ narendraḥ
20. And having seen the villages and cattle-settlements, as well as his son and his tranquil daughter-in-law, his great anger (kopa) was entirely calmed. Vibhāṇḍaka, the supreme king, then bestowed great favor upon his son.
स तत्र निक्षिप्य सुतं महर्षिरुवाच सूर्याग्निसमप्रभावम् ।
जाते पुत्रे वनमेवाव्रजेथा राज्ञः प्रियाण्यस्य सर्वाणि कृत्वा ॥२१॥
21. sa tatra nikṣipya sutaṁ maharṣi;ruvāca sūryāgnisamaprabhāvam ,
jāte putre vanamevāvrajethā; rājñaḥ priyāṇyasya sarvāṇi kṛtvā.
21. sa tatra nikṣipya sutaṃ maharṣiḥ
uvāca sūryāgnisamaprabhāvam
jāte putre vanam eva avrajetḥāḥ
rājñaḥ priyāṇi asya sarvāṇi kṛtvā
21. The great sage, having left his son there - a son radiating the splendor of the sun and fire - instructed him: "Once a son is born to you, you must go to the forest, after you have fulfilled all the king's wishes."
स तद्वचः कृतवानृश्यशृङ्गो ययौ च यत्रास्य पिता बभूव ।
शान्ता चैनं पर्यचरद्यथावत्खे रोहिणी सोममिवानुकूला ॥२२॥
22. sa tadvacaḥ kṛtavānṛśyaśṛṅgo; yayau ca yatrāsya pitā babhūva ,
śāntā cainaṁ paryacaradyathāva;tkhe rohiṇī somamivānukūlā.
22. sa tat vacaḥ kṛtavān ṛṣyaśṛṅgaḥ
yayau ca yatra asya pitā babhūva
| śāntā ca enam paryacarat yathāvat
khe rohiṇī somam iva anukūlā
22. Ṛṣyaśṛṅga fulfilled that instruction and went to the place where his father resided. And Śāntā dutifully served him, just as the devoted Rohiṇī attends to Soma (the moon) in the sky.
अरुन्धती वा सुभगा वसिष्ठं लोपामुद्रा वापि यथा ह्यगस्त्यम् ।
नलस्य वा दमयन्ती यथाभूद्यथा शची वज्रधरस्य चैव ॥२३॥
23. arundhatī vā subhagā vasiṣṭhaṁ; lopāmudrā vāpi yathā hyagastyam ,
nalasya vā damayantī yathābhū;dyathā śacī vajradharasya caiva.
23. arundhatī vā subhagā vasiṣṭham
lopāmudrā vā api yathā hi agastyam
| nalasya vā damayantī yathā abhūt
yathā śacī vajradharasya ca eva
23. (Śāntā served Ṛṣyaśṛṅga) just as the beloved Arundhatī served Vasiṣṭha, or indeed as Lopāmudrā served Agastya. Similarly, just as Damayantī was to Nala, and indeed just as Śacī is to the thunderbolt-wielder (Indra).
नाडायनी चेन्द्रसेना यथैव वश्या नित्यं मुद्गलस्याजमीढ ।
तथा शान्ता ऋश्यशृङ्गं वनस्थं प्रीत्या युक्ता पर्यचरन्नरेन्द्र ॥२४॥
24. nāḍāyanī cendrasenā yathaiva; vaśyā nityaṁ mudgalasyājamīḍha ,
tathā śāntā ṛśyaśṛṅgaṁ vanasthaṁ; prītyā yuktā paryacarannarendra.
24. nāḍāyanī ca indrasenā yathā eva
vaśyā nityaṃ mudgalasya ājamīḍha |
tathā śāntā ṛṣyaśṛṅgaṃ vanasthaṃ
prītyā yuktā paryacarat narendra
24. O Ajāmīḍha, just as Nāḍāyanī Indrasenā was always devoted to Mudgala, so too, O King, Śāntā, filled with affection, served Ṛṣyaśṛṅga, who dwelled in the forest.
तस्याश्रमः पुण्य एषो विभाति महाह्रदं शोभयन्पुण्यकीर्तेः ।
अत्र स्नातः कृतकृत्यो विशुद्धस्तीर्थान्यन्यान्यनुसंयाहि राजन् ॥२५॥
25. tasyāśramaḥ puṇya eṣo vibhāti; mahāhradaṁ śobhayanpuṇyakīrteḥ ,
atra snātaḥ kṛtakṛtyo viśuddha;stīrthānyanyānyanusaṁyāhi rājan.
25. tasya āśramaḥ puṇyaḥ eṣaḥ vibhāti
mahāhradam śobhayan puṇyakīrteḥ
atra snātaḥ kṛtakṛtyaḥ viśuddhaḥ
tīrthāni anyāni anusaṃyāhi rājan
25. This sacred hermitage of the one of meritorious fame shines, beautifying the great lake. Having bathed here, O King, you will be purified and accomplished in your duty, then proceed to other holy places.
