ततः प्रविष्टे कौन्तेये सिन्धुराजजिघांसया ।
द्रोणानीकं विनिर्भिद्य भोजानीकं च दुस्तरम् ॥१॥

काम्बोजस्य च दायादे हते राजन्सुदक्षिणे ।
श्रुतायुधे च विक्रान्ते निहते सव्यसाचिना ॥२॥
2. kāmbojasya ca dāyāde hate rājansudakṣiṇe ,
śrutāyudhe ca vikrānte nihate savyasācinā.

2. O King, when Sudakṣiṇa, the heir of Kamboja, was slain, and when the mighty Śrutāyudha was killed by Arjuna.
विप्रद्रुतेष्वनीकेषु विध्वस्तेषु समन्ततः ।
प्रभग्नं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रस्ते द्रोणमभ्ययात् ॥३॥
3. vipradruteṣvanīkeṣu vidhvasteṣu samantataḥ ,
prabhagnaṁ svabalaṁ dṛṣṭvā putraste droṇamabhyayāt.
3. vipradruteṣu anīkeṣu vidhvasteṣu samantataḥ
prabhagnam svabalam dṛṣṭvā putraḥ te droṇam abhyayāt
3. te putraḥ vipradruteṣu samantataḥ vidhvasteṣu

3. When the armies had fled in disarray and were completely destroyed from all sides, your son, seeing his own force broken, approached Droṇa.
त्वरन्नेकरथेनैव समेत्य द्रोणमब्रवीत् ।
गतः स पुरुषव्याघ्रः प्रमथ्येमां महाचमूम् ॥४॥
4. tvarannekarathenaiva sametya droṇamabravīt ,
gataḥ sa puruṣavyāghraḥ pramathyemāṁ mahācamūm.

gataḥ saḥ puruṣavyāghraḥ pramathya imām mahācamūm

4. Hurrying with just one chariot, he approached Droṇa and said: 'That tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) has gone, having thoroughly crushed this great army.'
अत्र बुद्ध्या समीक्षस्व किं नु कार्यमनन्तरम् ।
अर्जुनस्य विघाताय दारुणेऽस्मिञ्जनक्षये ॥५॥
5. atra buddhyā samīkṣasva kiṁ nu kāryamanantaram ,
arjunasya vighātāya dāruṇe'smiñjanakṣaye.
5. atra buddhyā samīkṣasva kim nu kāryam anantaram
arjunasya vighātāya dāruṇe asmin janakṣaye
5. atra buddhyā (tvam) samīkṣasva,
dāruṇe asmin janakṣaye arjunasya vighātāya anantaram kim nu kāryam
5. Therefore, with your intellect (buddhi), consider what should be done next for the destruction of Arjuna in this terrible destruction of people (janakṣaya).
यथा स पुरुषव्याघ्रो न हन्येत जयद्रथः ।
तथा विधत्स्व भद्रं ते त्वं हि नः परमा गतिः ॥६॥
6. yathā sa puruṣavyāghro na hanyeta jayadrathaḥ ,
tathā vidhatsva bhadraṁ te tvaṁ hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ.
6. yathā sa puruṣavyāghraḥ na hanyeta jayadrathaḥ
tathā vidhatsva bhadram te tvam hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ
6. tvam hi naḥ paramā gatiḥ tathā vidhatsva yathā sa
puruṣavyāghraḥ jayadrathaḥ na hanyeta te bhadram
6. Arrange it so that Jayadratha, that tiger among men, is not killed. May well-being be yours, for you are indeed our supreme refuge.
असौ धनंजयाग्निर्हि कोपमारुतचोदितः ।
सेनाकक्षं दहति मे वह्निः कक्षमिवोत्थितः ॥७॥
7. asau dhanaṁjayāgnirhi kopamārutacoditaḥ ,
senākakṣaṁ dahati me vahniḥ kakṣamivotthitaḥ.
7. asau dhanaṃjayāgniḥ hi kopamāruta-coditaḥ
senākakṣam dahati me vahniḥ kakṣam iva utthitaḥ
7. hi asau kopamāruta-coditaḥ dhanaṃjayāgniḥ me
senākakṣam dahati utthitaḥ vahniḥ kakṣam iva
7. Indeed, this fire that is Arjuna (dhanaṃjaya), fanned by the wind of wrath, burns my army like a rising wildfire consumes a dry forest.
अतिक्रान्ते हि कौन्तेये भित्त्वा सैन्यं परंतप ।
जयद्रथस्य गोप्तारः संशयं परमं गताः ॥८॥
8. atikrānte hi kaunteye bhittvā sainyaṁ paraṁtapa ,
jayadrathasya goptāraḥ saṁśayaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ.
8. atikrānte hi kaunteye bhittvā sainyam paraṃtapa
jayadrathasya goptāraḥ saṃśayam paramam gatāḥ
8. hi kaunteye sainyam bhittvā atikrānte paraṃtapa
jayadrathasya goptāraḥ paramam saṃśayam gatāḥ
8. Indeed, O scorcher of foes, once Arjuna (kaunteya) has broken through the army and passed beyond, the protectors of Jayadratha will face extreme peril.
स्थिरा बुद्धिर्नरेन्द्राणामासीद्ब्रह्मविदां वर ।
नातिक्रमिष्यति द्रोणं जातु जीवन्धनंजयः ॥९॥
9. sthirā buddhirnarendrāṇāmāsīdbrahmavidāṁ vara ,
nātikramiṣyati droṇaṁ jātu jīvandhanaṁjayaḥ.
9. sthirā buddhiḥ narendrāṇām āsīt brahmavidām vara
na atikramiṣyati droṇam jātu jīvan dhanaṃjayaḥ
9. brahmavidām vara narendrāṇām buddhiḥ sthirā āsīt
dhanaṃjayaḥ jīvan droṇam jātu na atikramiṣyati
9. O best among the knowers of brahman, the resolve of the kings was firm: Arjuna (dhanaṃjaya), while still alive, will never bypass Droṇa.
सोऽसौ पार्थो व्यतिक्रान्तो मिषतस्ते महाद्युते ।
सर्वं ह्यद्यातुरं मन्ये नैतदस्ति बलं मम ॥१०॥
10. so'sau pārtho vyatikrānto miṣataste mahādyute ,
sarvaṁ hyadyāturaṁ manye naitadasti balaṁ mama.
10. saḥ asau pārthaḥ vyatikrāntaḥ miṣataḥ te mahādyute |
sarvam hi adya āturaṃ manye na etat asti balam mama
10. mahādyute te miṣataḥ saḥ asau pārthaḥ vyatikrāntaḥ
adya hi sarvam āturaṃ manye etat balam mama na asti
10. That Arjuna has departed, O greatly effulgent one, even as you watched. Indeed, today I consider everything to be distressed, and this strength (which I once possessed) is no longer mine.
जानामि त्वां महाभाग पाण्डवानां हिते रतम् ।
तथा मुह्यामि च ब्रह्मन्कार्यवत्तां विचिन्तयन् ॥११॥
11. jānāmi tvāṁ mahābhāga pāṇḍavānāṁ hite ratam ,
tathā muhyāmi ca brahmankāryavattāṁ vicintayan.
11. jānāmi tvām mahābhāga pāṇḍavānām hite ratam |
tathā muhyāmi ca brahman kāryavattām vicintayan
11. mahābhāga tvām pāṇḍavānām hite ratam jānāmi ca
brahman tathā kāryavattām vicintayan muhyāmi
11. O great one, I know you to be devoted to the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas. Yet, O brahmin (brahman), I become bewildered while reflecting upon the gravity of my duty.
यथाशक्ति च ते ब्रह्मन्वर्तये वृत्तिमुत्तमाम् ।
प्रीणामि च यथाशक्ति तच्च त्वं नावबुध्यसे ॥१२॥
12. yathāśakti ca te brahmanvartaye vṛttimuttamām ,
prīṇāmi ca yathāśakti tacca tvaṁ nāvabudhyase.
12. yathāśakti ca te brahman vartaye vṛttim uttamām |
prīṇāmi ca yathāśakti tat ca tvam na avabudhyase
12. brahman ca te yathāśakti uttamām vṛttim vartaye
ca yathāśakti prīṇāmi tat ca tvam na avabudhyase
12. And, O brahmin (brahman), I maintain an excellent livelihood for you to the best of my ability. I also try to please (you) as much as possible, yet you do not understand that.
अस्मान्न त्वं सदा भक्तानिच्छस्यमितविक्रम ।
पाण्डवान्सततं प्रीणास्यस्माकं विप्रिये रतान् ॥१३॥
13. asmānna tvaṁ sadā bhaktānicchasyamitavikrama ,
pāṇḍavānsatataṁ prīṇāsyasmākaṁ vipriye ratān.
13. asmān na tvam sadā bhaktān icchasi amita-vikrama
| pāṇḍavān satatam prīṇāsi asmākam vipriye ratān
13. amita-vikrama tvam sadā asmān bhaktān na icchasi
satatam asmākam vipriye ratān pāṇḍavān prīṇāsi
13. Therefore, O warrior of immeasurable might, you do not always desire us, your devotees. Instead, you constantly please the Pāṇḍavas, who are engaged in acts hostile to us.
अस्मानेवोपजीवंस्त्वमस्माकं विप्रिये रतः ।
न ह्यहं त्वां विजानामि मधुदिग्धमिव क्षुरम् ॥१४॥
14. asmānevopajīvaṁstvamasmākaṁ vipriye rataḥ ,
na hyahaṁ tvāṁ vijānāmi madhudigdhamiva kṣuram.
14. asmān eva upajīvan tvam asmākam vipriye rataḥ na
hi aham tvām vijānāmi madhudigdham iva kṣuram
14. tvam asmān eva upajīvan asmākam vipriye rataḥ hi
aham madhudigdham kṣuram iva tvām na vijānāmi
14. You live off us, yet you delight in causing us harm. Indeed, I do not recognize you; you are like a razor smeared with honey.
नादास्यच्चेद्वरं मह्यं भवान्पाण्डवनिग्रहे ।
नावारयिष्यं गच्छन्तमहं सिन्धुपतिं गृहान् ॥१५॥
15. nādāsyaccedvaraṁ mahyaṁ bhavānpāṇḍavanigrahe ,
nāvārayiṣyaṁ gacchantamahaṁ sindhupatiṁ gṛhān.
15. na adāsyat cet varam mahyam bhavān pāṇḍavanigrahe
na avārayiṣyam gacchantam aham sindhupatim gṛhān
15. cet bhavān mahyam pāṇḍavanigrahe varam na adāsyat
aham gacchantam sindhupatim gṛhān na avārayiṣyam
15. If you had not granted me a boon for the subjugation of the Pāṇḍavas, I would not have stopped the lord of Sindhu (Jayadratha) from going to his home.
मया त्वाशंसमानेन त्वत्तस्त्राणमबुद्धिना ।
आश्वासितः सिन्धुपतिर्मोहाद्दत्तश्च मृत्यवे ॥१६॥
16. mayā tvāśaṁsamānena tvattastrāṇamabuddhinā ,
āśvāsitaḥ sindhupatirmohāddattaśca mṛtyave.
16. mayā tu āśaṃsamānena tvattaḥ trāṇam abuddhinā
āśvāsitaḥ sindhupatiḥ mohāt dattaḥ ca mṛtyave
16. tu abuddhinā mayā tvattaḥ trāṇam āśaṃsamānena
sindhupatiḥ āśvāsitaḥ ca mohāt mṛtyave dattaḥ
16. I, unwise and hoping for protection from you, reassured the lord of Sindhu (Jayadratha), but due to my delusion (moha), he was handed over to death.
यमदंष्ट्रान्तरं प्राप्तो मुच्येतापि हि मानवः ।
नार्जुनस्य वशं प्राप्तो मुच्येताजौ जयद्रथः ॥१७॥
17. yamadaṁṣṭrāntaraṁ prāpto mucyetāpi hi mānavaḥ ,
nārjunasya vaśaṁ prāpto mucyetājau jayadrathaḥ.
17. yamadaṃṣṭrāntaram prāptaḥ mucyeta api hi mānavaḥ na
arjunasya vaśam prāptaḥ mucyeta ājau jayadrathaḥ
17. hi mānavaḥ yamadaṃṣṭrāntaram prāptaḥ api mucyeta
arjunasya vaśam ājau prāptaḥ jayadrathaḥ na mucyeta
17. Indeed, a human being who has entered the jaws of Yama might still be freed, but Jayadratha, having fallen into Arjuna's power in battle, will not be freed.
स तथा कुरु शोणाश्व यथा रक्ष्येत सैन्धवः ।
मम चार्तप्रलापानां मा क्रुधः पाहि सैन्धवम् ॥१८॥
18. sa tathā kuru śoṇāśva yathā rakṣyeta saindhavaḥ ,
mama cārtapralāpānāṁ mā krudhaḥ pāhi saindhavam.
18. sa tathā kuru śoṇāśva yathā rakṣyeta saindhavaḥ
mama ca ārtapralāpānām mā krudhaḥ pāhi saindhavam
18. śoṇāśva sa tathā kuru yathā saindhavaḥ rakṣyeta
ca mama ārtapralāpānām mā krudhaḥ saindhavam pāhi
18. O Śoṇāśva, please act in such a way that Saṃdhava is protected. Do not be angry at my distressed lamentations; instead, protect Saṃdhava.
द्रोण उवाच ।
नाभ्यसूयामि ते वाचमश्वत्थाम्नासि मे समः ।
सत्यं तु ते प्रवक्ष्यामि तज्जुषस्व विशां पते ॥१९॥
19. droṇa uvāca ,
nābhyasūyāmi te vācamaśvatthāmnāsi me samaḥ ,
satyaṁ tu te pravakṣyāmi tajjuṣasva viśāṁ pate.
19. droṇa uvāca na abhyasūyāmi te vācam aśvatthāmnā asi me
samaḥ satyam tu te pravakṣyāmi tat juṣasva viśām pate
19. droṇaḥ uvāca te vācam na abhyasūyāmi tvaṃ aśvatthāmnā me
samaḥ asi tu te satyam pravakṣyāmi viśām pate tat juṣasva
19. Droṇa said: 'I do not resent your words, for you are like Aśvatthāman to me. But I will declare the truth to you; please accept that, O lord of the people.'
सारथिः प्रवरः कृष्णः शीघ्राश्चास्य हयोत्तमाः ।
अल्पं च विवरं कृत्वा तूर्णं याति धनंजयः ॥२०॥
20. sārathiḥ pravaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śīghrāścāsya hayottamāḥ ,
alpaṁ ca vivaraṁ kṛtvā tūrṇaṁ yāti dhanaṁjayaḥ.
20. sārathiḥ pravaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śīghrāḥ ca asya hayottamāḥ
alpam ca vivaram kṛtvā tūrṇam yāti dhanaṃjayaḥ
20. kṛṣṇaḥ pravaraḥ sārathiḥ ca asya hayottamāḥ śīghrāḥ
dhanaṃjayaḥ alpam vivaram kṛtvā ca tūrṇam yāti
20. Kṛṣṇa is an excellent charioteer, and his splendid horses are swift. Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), making even a small opening, moves swiftly.
किं नु पश्यसि बाणौघान्क्रोशमात्रे किरीटिनः ।
पश्चाद्रथस्य पतितान्क्षिप्ताञ्शीघ्रं हि गच्छतः ॥२१॥
21. kiṁ nu paśyasi bāṇaughānkrośamātre kirīṭinaḥ ,
paścādrathasya patitānkṣiptāñśīghraṁ hi gacchataḥ.
21. kim nu paśyasi bāṇaughān krośamātre kirīṭinaḥ paścāt
rathasya patitān kṣiptān śīghram hi gacchataḥ
21. kim nu paśyasi kirīṭinaḥ śīghram hi gacchataḥ
bāṇaughān kṣiptān krośamātre rathasya paścāt patitān
21. What? Do you really see the hosts of arrows, swiftly shot by the swiftly moving crown-wearer (Arjuna), fallen a full krośa behind his chariot?
न चाहं शीघ्रयानेऽद्य समर्थो वयसान्वितः ।
सेनामुखे च पार्थानामेतद्बलमुपस्थितम् ॥२२॥
22. na cāhaṁ śīghrayāne'dya samartho vayasānvitaḥ ,
senāmukhe ca pārthānāmetadbalamupasthitam.
22. na ca aham śīghrayāne adya samarthaḥ vayasā anvitaḥ
senāmukhe ca pārthānām etat balam upasthitam
22. adya ca vayasā anvitaḥ aham śīghrayāne na samarthaḥ; ca senāmukhe pārthānām etat balam upasthitam.
22. And I, advanced in age, am not capable of swift pursuit today. Moreover, this army of the Pārthas is positioned at the front.
युधिष्ठिरश्च मे ग्राह्यो मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
एवं मया प्रतिज्ञातं क्षत्रमध्ये महाभुज ॥२३॥
23. yudhiṣṭhiraśca me grāhyo miṣatāṁ sarvadhanvinām ,
evaṁ mayā pratijñātaṁ kṣatramadhye mahābhuja.
23. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ca me grāhyaḥ miṣatām sarvadhanvinām
evam mayā pratijñātam kṣatramadhye mahābhuja
23. ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ miṣatām sarvadhanvinām me grāhyaḥ.
mahābhuja,
mayā evam kṣatramadhye pratijñātam.
23. And Yudhiṣṭhira is to be captured by me, while all archers look on. Thus have I vowed, O mighty-armed one, in the midst of the warriors (kṣatriya).
धनंजयेन चोत्सृष्टो वर्तते प्रमुखे मम ।
तस्माद्व्यूहमुखं हित्वा नाहं यास्यामि फल्गुनम् ॥२४॥
24. dhanaṁjayena cotsṛṣṭo vartate pramukhe mama ,
tasmādvyūhamukhaṁ hitvā nāhaṁ yāsyāmi phalgunam.
24. dhanaṃjayena ca utsṛṣṭaḥ vartate pramukhe mama
tasmāt vyūhamukham hitvā na aham yāsyāmi phalgunam
24. ca dhanaṃjayena utsṛṣṭaḥ (saḥ) mama pramukhe vartate.
tasmāt aham vyūhamukham hitvā phalgunam na yāsyāmi.
24. And Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) himself stands deployed at my front. Therefore, abandoning the front of the battle formation, I will not go (to confront) Phalguna (Arjuna).
तुल्याभिजनकर्माणं शत्रुमेकं सहायवान् ।
गत्वा योधय मा भैस्त्वं त्वं ह्यस्य जगतः पतिः ॥२५॥
25. tulyābhijanakarmāṇaṁ śatrumekaṁ sahāyavān ,
gatvā yodhaya mā bhaistvaṁ tvaṁ hyasya jagataḥ patiḥ.
25. tulyābhijanakarmāṇam śatrum ekam sahāyavān gatvā
yodhaya mā bhaiḥ tvam tvam hi asya jagataḥ patiḥ
25. sahāyavān tvam tulyābhijanakarmāṇam ekam śatrum gatvā yodhaya.
tvam mā bhaiḥ hi asya jagataḥ patiḥ.
25. Go and fight that single enemy who is equal in lineage and deeds (Arjuna), you who are well-supported by allies. Do not fear, for you are indeed the lord of this world.
राजा शूरः कृती दक्षो वैरमुत्पाद्य पाण्डवैः ।
वीर स्वयं प्रयाह्याशु यत्र यातो धनंजयः ॥२६॥
26. rājā śūraḥ kṛtī dakṣo vairamutpādya pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
vīra svayaṁ prayāhyāśu yatra yāto dhanaṁjayaḥ.
26. rājā śūraḥ kṛtī dakṣaḥ vairam utpādya pāṇḍavaiḥ
vīra svayam prayāhi āśu yatra yātaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
26. vīra śūraḥ kṛtī dakṣaḥ rājā pāṇḍavaiḥ vairam
utpādya svayam āśu yatra dhanaṃjayaḥ yātaḥ prayāhi
26. O brave, skilled, and capable king, since you have created enmity with the Pāṇḍavas, O hero, you yourself should quickly go to where Dhananjaya (Arjuna) has gone.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
कथं त्वामप्यतिक्रान्तः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
धनंजयो मया शक्य आचार्य प्रतिबाधितुम् ॥२७॥
27. duryodhana uvāca ,
kathaṁ tvāmapyatikrāntaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
dhanaṁjayo mayā śakya ācārya pratibādhitum.
27. duryodhanaḥ uvāca katham tvām api atikrāntaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām
varaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ mayā śakyaḥ ācārya pratibādhitum
27. duryodhanaḥ uvāca ācārya sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ tvām api
atikrāntaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ mayā katham pratibādhitum śakyaḥ
27. Duryodhana said: O teacher, how can I repel Dhananjaya (Arjuna), who has surpassed even you, the foremost of all weapon-wielders?
अपि शक्यो रणे जेतुं वज्रहस्तः पुरंदरः ।
नार्जुनः समरे शक्यो जेतुं परपुरंजयः ॥२८॥
28. api śakyo raṇe jetuṁ vajrahastaḥ puraṁdaraḥ ,
nārjunaḥ samare śakyo jetuṁ parapuraṁjayaḥ.
28. api śakyaḥ raṇe jetum vajrahastaḥ purandaraḥ
na arjunaḥ samare śakyaḥ jetum parapuraṃjayaḥ
28. vajrahastaḥ purandaraḥ api raṇe jetum śakyaḥ
na arjunaḥ samare jetum parapuraṃjayaḥ
28. Even Purandara (Indra), wielding the thunderbolt (vajra), might be conquered in battle; but Arjuna, the conqueror of enemy cities, cannot possibly be conquered in battle.
येन भोजश्च हार्दिक्यो भवांश्च त्रिदशोपमः ।
अस्त्रप्रतापेन जितौ श्रुतायुश्च निबर्हितः ॥२९॥
29. yena bhojaśca hārdikyo bhavāṁśca tridaśopamaḥ ,
astrapratāpena jitau śrutāyuśca nibarhitaḥ.
29. yena bhojaḥ ca hārdikyaḥ bhavān ca tridaśopamaḥ
astrapratāpena jitau śrutāyuḥ ca nibarhitaḥ
29. yena astrapratāpena bhojaḥ ca hārdikyaḥ ca

29. By the might of whose (Arjuna's) weapons, Bhoja, Hardikya, and even you, who are comparable to a god, were vanquished, and Śrutāyu was slain.
सुदक्षिणश्च निहतः स च राजा श्रुतायुधः ।
श्रुतायुश्चाच्युतायुश्च म्लेच्छाश्च शतशो हताः ॥३०॥
30. sudakṣiṇaśca nihataḥ sa ca rājā śrutāyudhaḥ ,

30. Sudakṣiṇa was killed, and King Śrutāyudha. Also, Śrutāyu and Acyutāyu, and hundreds of Mlecchas were slain.
तं कथं पाण्डवं युद्धे दहन्तमहितान्बहून् ।
प्रतियोत्स्यामि दुर्धर्षं तन्मे शंसास्त्रकोविद ॥३१॥
31. taṁ kathaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ yuddhe dahantamahitānbahūn ,
pratiyotsyāmi durdharṣaṁ tanme śaṁsāstrakovida.

31. O expert in weapons, tell me how I can fight against that unassailable Pāṇḍava, who is scorching many enemies in battle.
क्षमं चेन्मन्यसे युद्धं मम तेनाद्य शाधि माम् ।
परवानस्मि भवति प्रेष्यकृद्रक्ष मे यशः ॥३२॥
32. kṣamaṁ cenmanyase yuddhaṁ mama tenādya śādhi mām ,
paravānasmi bhavati preṣyakṛdrakṣa me yaśaḥ.

mām paravān asmi bhavati preṣyakṛt rakṣa me yaśaḥ

32. If you deem this battle proper for me, then instruct me today on what I should do. I am subject to you; act as my guide and protect my reputation.
द्रोण उवाच ।
सत्यं वदसि कौरव्य दुराधर्षो धनंजयः ।
अहं तु तत्करिष्यामि यथैनं प्रसहिष्यसि ॥३३॥
33. droṇa uvāca ,
satyaṁ vadasi kauravya durādharṣo dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
ahaṁ tu tatkariṣyāmi yathainaṁ prasahiṣyasi.

33. Droṇa replied: "You speak the truth, O scion of Kuru, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) is indeed unassailable. But I will do that by which you shall be able to overcome him."
अद्भुतं चाद्य पश्यन्तु लोके सर्वधनुर्धराः ।
विषक्तं त्वयि कौन्तेयं वासुदेवस्य पश्यतः ॥३४॥
34. adbhutaṁ cādya paśyantu loke sarvadhanurdharāḥ ,
viṣaktaṁ tvayi kaunteyaṁ vāsudevasya paśyataḥ.

34. And today, let all the archers in the world behold this marvel: Kaunteya (Arjuna), with his attention fixed upon you, as Vāsudeva (Krishna) watches.
एष ते कवचं राजंस्तथा बध्नामि काञ्चनम् ।
यथा न बाणा नास्त्राणि विषहिष्यन्ति ते रणे ॥३५॥
35. eṣa te kavacaṁ rājaṁstathā badhnāmi kāñcanam ,
yathā na bāṇā nāstrāṇi viṣahiṣyanti te raṇe.

35. O King, I shall thus fasten this golden armor upon you, so that neither arrows nor other weapons will be able to harm you in battle.
यदि त्वां सासुरसुराः सयक्षोरगराक्षसाः ।
योधयन्ति त्रयो लोकाः सनरा नास्ति ते भयम् ॥३६॥
36. yadi tvāṁ sāsurasurāḥ sayakṣoragarākṣasāḥ ,
yodhayanti trayo lokāḥ sanarā nāsti te bhayam.

36. If the three worlds—including gods, demons, Yakṣas, Uragas, Rākṣasas, and men—were to fight against you, there would be no fear for you.
न कृष्णो न च कौन्तेयो न चान्यः शस्त्रभृद्रणे ।
शरानर्पयितुं कश्चित्कवचे तव शक्ष्यति ॥३७॥
37. na kṛṣṇo na ca kaunteyo na cānyaḥ śastrabhṛdraṇe ,
śarānarpayituṁ kaścitkavace tava śakṣyati.
37. na kṛṣṇaḥ na ca kaunteyaḥ na ca anyaḥ śastrabhṛt
raṇe śarān arpayitum kaścit kavace tava śakṣyati

37. Neither Krishna, nor Kaunteya (Arjuna), nor any other warrior (śastrabhrṛt) in battle will be able to penetrate your armor with arrows.
स त्वं कवचमास्थाय क्रुद्धमद्य रणेऽर्जुनम् ।
त्वरमाणः स्वयं याहि न चासौ त्वां सहिष्यते ॥३८॥
38. sa tvaṁ kavacamāsthāya kruddhamadya raṇe'rjunam ,
tvaramāṇaḥ svayaṁ yāhi na cāsau tvāṁ sahiṣyate.

38. You yourself, quickly put on your armor and go into battle today to confront Arjuna, who is enraged. Indeed, he will not tolerate you.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा त्वरन्द्रोणः स्पृष्ट्वाम्भो वर्म भास्वरम् ।
आबबन्धाद्भुततमं जपन्मन्त्रं यथाविधि ॥३९॥
39. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvā tvarandroṇaḥ spṛṣṭvāmbho varma bhāsvaram ,
ābabandhādbhutatamaṁ japanmantraṁ yathāvidhi.

39. Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus, Drona, hurrying, touched water and then, chanting mantras (mantra) according to the prescribed rites, fastened on his most wondrous, shining armor.
रणे तस्मिन्सुमहति विजयाय सुतस्य ते ।
विसिस्मापयिषुर्लोकं विद्यया ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥४०॥
40. raṇe tasminsumahati vijayāya sutasya te ,
visismāpayiṣurlokaṁ vidyayā brahmavittamaḥ.

40. In that very great battle, [Drona] — the foremost knower of brahman — intended to astonish the world with his profound knowledge (vidyā) for the victory of your son.

करोतु स्वस्ति ते ब्रह्मा स्वस्ति चापि द्विजातयः ।
सरीसृपाश्च ये श्रेष्ठास्तेभ्यस्ते स्वस्ति भारत ॥४१॥
41. droṇa uvāca ,
karotu svasti te brahmā svasti cāpi dvijātayaḥ ,
sarīsṛpāśca ye śreṣṭhāstebhyaste svasti bhārata.

41. Drona said: May Brahma grant you well-being (svasti), and may the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) also bestow well-being upon you. And, O Bhārata, may even the most excellent among the reptiles (sarīsṛpa) bring you well-being (svasti).
ययातिर्नहुषश्चैव धुन्धुमारो भगीरथः ।
तुभ्यं राजर्षयः सर्वे स्वस्ति कुर्वन्तु सर्वशः ॥४२॥
42. yayātirnahuṣaścaiva dhundhumāro bhagīrathaḥ ,
tubhyaṁ rājarṣayaḥ sarve svasti kurvantu sarvaśaḥ.

42. May Yayāti, Nahuṣa, Dhundhumāra, and Bhagīratha – indeed, all these royal sages – bestow welfare upon you in every respect.
स्वस्ति तेऽस्त्वेकपादेभ्यो बहुपादेभ्य एव च ।
स्वस्त्यस्त्वपादकेभ्यश्च नित्यं तव महारणे ॥४३॥
43. svasti te'stvekapādebhyo bahupādebhya eva ca ,
svastyastvapādakebhyaśca nityaṁ tava mahāraṇe.

svasti astu apādakebhyaḥ ca nityam tava mahāraṇe

43. May there be welfare for you from one-footed beings, and indeed from many-footed ones as well. And may there always be welfare for you from those without feet, in your great battle.
स्वाहा स्वधा शची चैव स्वस्ति कुर्वन्तु ते सदा ।
लक्ष्मीररुन्धती चैव कुरुतां स्वस्ति तेऽनघ ॥४४॥
44. svāhā svadhā śacī caiva svasti kurvantu te sadā ,
lakṣmīrarundhatī caiva kurutāṁ svasti te'nagha.

वसिष्ठः कश्यपश्चैव स्वस्ति कुर्वन्तु ते नृप ॥४५॥
45. asito devalaścaiva viśvāmitrastathāṅgirāḥ ,
vasiṣṭhaḥ kaśyapaścaiva svasti kurvantu te nṛpa.

धाता विधाता लोकेशो दिशश्च सदिगीश्वराः ।
स्वस्ति तेऽद्य प्रयच्छन्तु कार्त्तिकेयश्च षण्मुखः ॥४६॥
46. dhātā vidhātā lokeśo diśaśca sadigīśvarāḥ ,
svasti te'dya prayacchantu kārttikeyaśca ṣaṇmukhaḥ.

46. May Dhātā, Vidhātā, the lord of the worlds, and the directions along with their presiding deities, as well as Kārttikeya, the six-faced one, bestow well-being (svasti) upon you today.
विवस्वान्भगवान्स्वस्ति करोतु तव सर्वशः ।
दिग्गजाश्चैव चत्वारः क्षितिः खं गगनं ग्रहाः ॥४७॥
47. vivasvānbhagavānsvasti karotu tava sarvaśaḥ ,
diggajāścaiva catvāraḥ kṣitiḥ khaṁ gaganaṁ grahāḥ.

47. May the glorious (bhagavān) Vivasvān grant you well-being (svasti) in every way. And may the four elephants of the directions (diggajāḥ), the earth, the sky, the firmament, and the planets also grant you well-being.
अधस्ताद्धरणीं योऽसौ सदा धारयते नृप ।
स शेषः पन्नगश्रेष्ठः स्वस्ति तुभ्यं प्रयच्छतु ॥४८॥
48. adhastāddharaṇīṁ yo'sau sadā dhārayate nṛpa ,
sa śeṣaḥ pannagaśreṣṭhaḥ svasti tubhyaṁ prayacchatu.

48. O king (nṛpa), may that Shesha, the foremost (śreṣṭha) of serpents (pannaga), who always sustains (dhārayate) the earth (dharaṇī) from below (adhastāt), grant well-being (svasti) to you (tubhyaṃ).
गान्धारे युधि विक्रम्य निर्जिताः सुरसत्तमाः ।
पुरा वृत्रेण दैत्येन भिन्नदेहाः सहस्रशः ॥४९॥
49. gāndhāre yudhi vikramya nirjitāḥ surasattamāḥ ,
purā vṛtreṇa daityena bhinnadehāḥ sahasraśaḥ.

49. In Gāndhāra, after displaying valor in battle, the foremost of the gods (sura-sattama) were defeated (nirjitāḥ) long ago (purā) by the demon (daitya) Vṛtra, their bodies (deha) shattered (bhinna) in thousands (sahasraśaḥ).
हृततेजोबलाः सर्वे तदा सेन्द्रा दिवौकसः ।
ब्रह्माणं शरणं जग्मुर्वृत्राद्भीता महासुरात् ॥५०॥
50. hṛtatejobalāḥ sarve tadā sendrā divaukasaḥ ,
brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ jagmurvṛtrādbhītā mahāsurāt.

50. Then, all the gods, including Indra, having been deprived of their splendor and strength, and terrified by the great asura Vṛtra, sought refuge with Brahma.
देवा ऊचुः ।
प्रमर्दितानां वृत्रेण देवानां देवसत्तम ।
गतिर्भव सुरश्रेष्ठ त्राहि नो महतो भयात् ॥५१॥
51. devā ūcuḥ ,
pramarditānāṁ vṛtreṇa devānāṁ devasattama ,
gatirbhava suraśreṣṭha trāhi no mahato bhayāt.

51. The gods said: "O foremost among the gods (devasattama), be the refuge for us gods who have been crushed by Vṛtra. O best among celestials (suraśreṣṭha), protect us from this great fear!"
द्रोण उवाच ।
अथ पार्श्वे स्थितं विष्णुं शक्रादींश्च सुरोत्तमान् ।
प्राह तथ्यमिदं वाक्यं विषण्णान्सुरसत्तमान् ॥५२॥
52. droṇa uvāca ,
atha pārśve sthitaṁ viṣṇuṁ śakrādīṁśca surottamān ,
prāha tathyamidaṁ vākyaṁ viṣaṇṇānsurasattamān.

52. Droṇa said: Then, he spoke these truthful words to Vishnu, who was standing nearby, and to Indra and the other foremost and dejected gods.
रक्ष्या मे सततं देवाः सहेन्द्राः सद्विजातयः ।
त्वष्टुः सुदुर्धरं तेजो येन वृत्रो विनिर्मितः ॥५३॥
53. rakṣyā me satataṁ devāḥ sahendrāḥ sadvijātayaḥ ,
tvaṣṭuḥ sudurdharaṁ tejo yena vṛtro vinirmitaḥ.
53. rakṣyāḥ me satatam devāḥ sahendrāḥ sat dvijātayaḥ

53. The gods, along with Indra, and the virtuous twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) are always to be protected by me. Vṛtra was created by the irresistible power (tejas) of Tvaṣṭā.
त्वष्ट्रा पुरा तपस्तप्त्वा वर्षायुतशतं तदा ।
वृत्रो विनिर्मितो देवाः प्राप्यानुज्ञां महेश्वरात् ॥५४॥
54. tvaṣṭrā purā tapastaptvā varṣāyutaśataṁ tadā ,
vṛtro vinirmito devāḥ prāpyānujñāṁ maheśvarāt.
54. tvaṣṭrā purā tapaḥ taptvā varṣāyutaśatam tadā
vṛtraḥ vinirmitaḥ devāḥ prāpya anujñām maheśvarāt
54. O gods, formerly, Tvaṣṭā, having performed severe penance (tapas) for a hundred myriad years, then created Vṛtra after obtaining permission from Maheśvara.
स तस्यैव प्रसादाद्वै हन्यादेव रिपुर्बली ।
नागत्वा शंकरस्थानं भगवान्दृश्यते हरः ॥५५॥
55. sa tasyaiva prasādādvai hanyādeva ripurbalī ,
nāgatvā śaṁkarasthānaṁ bhagavāndṛśyate haraḥ.
55. saḥ tasya eva prasādāt vai hanyāt eva ripuḥ balī
na āgatvā śaṅkarasthānam bhagavān dṛśyate haraḥ
55. That powerful enemy (Vṛtra) will surely kill, empowered by His (Maheśvara's) grace. Lord Hara (Shiva) is not seen unless one goes to Śaṅkara's abode.
दृष्ट्वा हनिष्यथ रिपुं क्षिप्रं गच्छत मन्दरम् ।
यत्रास्ते तपसां योनिर्दक्षयज्ञविनाशनः ।
पिनाकी सर्वभूतेशो भगनेत्रनिपातनः ॥५६॥
56. dṛṣṭvā haniṣyatha ripuṁ kṣipraṁ gacchata mandaram ,
yatrāste tapasāṁ yonirdakṣayajñavināśanaḥ ,
pinākī sarvabhūteśo bhaganetranipātanaḥ.

56. Having seen the enemy, you will kill him. Go swiftly to Mandara mountain, where resides Shiva (Pinākin), who is the source of all spiritual discipline (tapas), the annihilator of Daksha's Vedic ritual (yajña), the lord of all beings, and the one who smote Bhaga's eye.
ते गत्वा सहिता देवा ब्रह्मणा सह मन्दरम् ।
अपश्यंस्तेजसां राशिं सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभम् ॥५७॥
57. te gatvā sahitā devā brahmaṇā saha mandaram ,
apaśyaṁstejasāṁ rāśiṁ sūryakoṭisamaprabham.
57. te gatvā sahitāḥ devāḥ brahmaṇā saha mandaram
apaśyan tejasām rāśim sūryakoṭisamaprabham
57. Accompanied by Brahmā, those gods went to Mandara mountain. There, they beheld a mass of splendor, whose radiance was equal to that of a crore of suns.
सोऽब्रवीत्स्वागतं देवा ब्रूत किं करवाण्यहम् ।
अमोघं दर्शनं मह्यं कामप्राप्तिरतोऽस्तु वः ॥५८॥
58. so'bravītsvāgataṁ devā brūta kiṁ karavāṇyaham ,
amoghaṁ darśanaṁ mahyaṁ kāmaprāptirato'stu vaḥ.
58. saḥ abravīt svāgatam devāḥ brūta kim karavāṇi aham
amogham darśanam mahyam kāmaprāptiḥ ataḥ astu vaḥ

58. He said, 'Welcome, O gods! Tell me, what may I do for you? My sight (darśana) is never in vain; therefore, may your wishes be fulfilled.'
एवमुक्तास्तु ते सर्वे प्रत्यूचुस्तं दिवौकसः ।
तेजो हृतं नो वृत्रेण गतिर्भव दिवौकसाम् ॥५९॥
59. evamuktāstu te sarve pratyūcustaṁ divaukasaḥ ,
tejo hṛtaṁ no vṛtreṇa gatirbhava divaukasām.

tejaḥ hṛtam naḥ vṛtreṇa gatiḥ bhava divaukasām

59. Thus addressed, all those gods replied to him: 'Our radiance has been stolen by Vritra. Become the protector of the gods!'
मूर्तीरीक्षष्व नो देव प्रहारैर्जर्जरीकृताः ।
शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नाः स्म गतिर्भव महेश्वर ॥६०॥
60. mūrtīrīkṣaṣva no deva prahārairjarjarīkṛtāḥ ,
śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ prapannāḥ sma gatirbhava maheśvara.
60. mūrtīḥ īkṣaṣva naḥ deva prahāraiḥ jarjarīkṛtāḥ
śaraṇam tvām prapannāḥ sma gatiḥ bhava maheśvara

60. O god, behold our forms (mūrti), which have been shattered by blows! We have taken refuge in you. Be our protector, O Great Lord (Maheśvara)!
महेश्वर उवाच ।
विदितं मे यथा देवाः कृत्येयं सुमहाबला ।
त्वष्टुस्तेजोभवा घोरा दुर्निवार्याकृतात्मभिः ॥६१॥
61. maheśvara uvāca ,
viditaṁ me yathā devāḥ kṛtyeyaṁ sumahābalā ,
tvaṣṭustejobhavā ghorā durnivāryākṛtātmabhiḥ.

61. Maheśvara (Shiva) said, 'O gods, it is known to me how this immensely powerful (sumahābalā) and terrible (ghorā) being (kṛtyā), born from the divine radiance of Tvaṣṭā, is difficult for those of undisciplined mind (akṛtātman) to resist.'
अवश्यं तु मया कार्यं साह्यं सर्वदिवौकसाम् ।
ममेदं गात्रजं शक्र कवचं गृह्य भास्वरम् ।
बधानानेन मन्त्रेण मानसेन सुरेश्वर ॥६२॥
62. avaśyaṁ tu mayā kāryaṁ sāhyaṁ sarvadivaukasām ,
mamedaṁ gātrajaṁ śakra kavacaṁ gṛhya bhāsvaram ,
badhānānena mantreṇa mānasena sureśvara.
62. avaśyam tu mayā kāryam sāhyam
sarvadivaukasām mama idam gātṛjam
śakra kavacam gṛhya bhāsvaram badhāna
anena mantreṇa mānasena sureśvara
62. śakra sureśvara avaśyam tu mayā

gṛhya anena mānasena mantreṇa badhāna
62. Indeed, I must provide assistance to all the gods. O Śakra (Indra), take this radiant armor born from my body. O lord of the gods, bind it on with this mental (mantra).
द्रोण उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा वरदः प्रादाद्वर्म तन्मन्त्रमेव च ।
स तेन वर्मणा गुप्तः प्रायाद्वृत्रचमूं प्रति ॥६३॥
63. droṇa uvāca ,
ityuktvā varadaḥ prādādvarma tanmantrameva ca ,
sa tena varmaṇā guptaḥ prāyādvṛtracamūṁ prati.

eva ca saḥ tena varmaṇā guptaḥ prāyāt vṛtracamūm prati

63. Droṇa said: Having spoken thus, the bestower of boons gave the armor and also that mantra. Protected by that armor, he (Indra) proceeded towards Vṛtra's army.
नानाविधैश्च शस्त्रौघैः पात्यमानैर्महारणे ।
न संधिः शक्यते भेत्तुं वर्मबन्धस्य तस्य तु ॥६४॥
64. nānāvidhaiśca śastraughaiḥ pātyamānairmahāraṇe ,
na saṁdhiḥ śakyate bhettuṁ varmabandhasya tasya tu.
64. nānāvidhaiḥ ca śastraughaiḥ pātyamānaiḥ mahāraṇe
na sandhiḥ śakyate bhettum varmabandhasya tasya tu
64. ca nānāvidhaiḥ śastraughaiḥ pātyamānaiḥ mahāraṇe
tasya varmabandhasya sandhiḥ na bhettum śakyate tu
64. And by various kinds of weapon-showers falling in the great battle, the bond of that armor (on him) could surely not be broken.
ततो जघान समरे वृत्रं देवपतिः स्वयम् ।
तं च मत्रमयं बन्धं वर्म चाङ्गिरसे ददौ ॥६५॥
65. tato jaghāna samare vṛtraṁ devapatiḥ svayam ,
taṁ ca matramayaṁ bandhaṁ varma cāṅgirase dadau.
65. tataḥ jaghāna samare vṛtram devapatiḥ svayam tam
ca mantramayam bandham varma ca āṅgirase dadau
65. tataḥ devapatiḥ svayam samare vṛtram jaghāna ca

65. Then, the lord of the gods (Indra) himself slew Vṛtra in battle. And he gave that mantra-made bond and the armor to Aṅgiras.
अङ्गिराः प्राह पुत्रस्य मन्त्रज्ञस्य बृहस्पतेः ।
बृहस्पतिरथोवाच अग्निवेश्याय धीमते ॥६६॥
66. aṅgirāḥ prāha putrasya mantrajñasya bṛhaspateḥ ,
bṛhaspatirathovāca agniveśyāya dhīmate.

66. Angiras spoke to his son Bṛhaspati, who was knowledgeable in sacred incantations (mantra). Then, Bṛhaspati in turn spoke to the wise Agnivēśya.
अग्निवेश्यो मम प्रादात्तेन बध्नामि वर्म ते ।
तवाद्य देहरक्षार्थं मन्त्रेण नृपसत्तम ॥६७॥
67. agniveśyo mama prādāttena badhnāmi varma te ,
tavādya deharakṣārthaṁ mantreṇa nṛpasattama.

tava adya deha-rakṣārtham mantreṇa nṛpa-sattama

67. Agnivēśya gave it to me; therefore, with that sacred incantation (mantra), I will now bind your protective armor for the safeguarding of your body, O best of kings.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततो द्रोणस्तव पुत्रं महाद्युतिः ।
पुनरेव वचः प्राह शनैराचार्यपुंगवः ॥६८॥
68. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvā tato droṇastava putraṁ mahādyutiḥ ,
punareva vacaḥ prāha śanairācāryapuṁgavaḥ.

68. Saṃjaya said: Having spoken thus, Droṇa, that greatly lustrous one and foremost among teachers, then gently spoke again to your son.
ब्रह्मसूत्रेण बध्नामि कवचं तव पार्थिव ।
हिरण्यगर्भेण यथा बद्धं विष्णोः पुरा रणे ॥६९॥
69. brahmasūtreṇa badhnāmi kavacaṁ tava pārthiva ,
hiraṇyagarbheṇa yathā baddhaṁ viṣṇoḥ purā raṇe.

hiraṇya-garbheṇa yathā baddham viṣṇoḥ purā raṇe

69. O king (pārthiva), I shall bind your armor with this sacred formula (brahmasūtra), just as in ancient times, Viṣṇu's armor was bound by Hiranyagarbha in battle.
यथा च ब्रह्मणा बद्धं संग्रामे तारकामये ।
शक्रस्य कवचं दिव्यं तथा बध्नाम्यहं तव ॥७०॥
70. yathā ca brahmaṇā baddhaṁ saṁgrāme tārakāmaye ,
śakrasya kavacaṁ divyaṁ tathā badhnāmyahaṁ tava.
70. yathā ca brahmaṇā baddham saṃgrāme tārakāmaye
śakrasya kavacam divyam tathā badhnāmi aham tava
70. yathā ca brahmaṇā tārakāmaye saṃgrāme śakrasya divyam kavacam baddham,

70. Just as Brahmā bound the divine armor for Indra (Śakra) in the battle against Tāraka, so do I bind it for you.
बद्ध्वा तु कवचं तस्य मन्त्रेण विधिपूर्वकम् ।
प्रेषयामास राजानं युद्धाय महते द्विजः ॥७१॥
71. baddhvā tu kavacaṁ tasya mantreṇa vidhipūrvakam ,
preṣayāmāsa rājānaṁ yuddhāya mahate dvijaḥ.

71. Having bound that armor onto him with the proper ritual (vidhi) and mantra, the brahmin (dvija) then sent the king forth for the great battle.
स संनद्धो महाबाहुराचार्येण महात्मना ।
रथानां च सहस्रेण त्रिगर्तानां प्रहारिणाम् ॥७२॥
72. sa saṁnaddho mahābāhurācāryeṇa mahātmanā ,
rathānāṁ ca sahasreṇa trigartānāṁ prahāriṇām.

rathānām ca sahasreṇa trigartānām prahāriṇām

72. He, the great-armed one, having been equipped by the great-souled preceptor (guru), was (then sent forth) with a thousand chariots belonging to the formidable Trigarta warriors.
तथा दन्तिसहस्रेण मत्तानां वीर्यशालिनाम् ।
अश्वानामयुतेनैव तथान्यैश्च महारथैः ॥७३॥
73. tathā dantisahasreṇa mattānāṁ vīryaśālinām ,
aśvānāmayutenaiva tathānyaiśca mahārathaiḥ.

73. And also (he went forth) with a thousand powerful and intoxicated elephants, indeed with ten thousand horses, and with other great charioteers.
वृतः प्रायान्महाबाहुरर्जुनस्य रथं प्रति ।
नानावादित्रघोषेण यथा वैरोचनिस्तथा ॥७४॥
74. vṛtaḥ prāyānmahābāhurarjunasya rathaṁ prati ,
nānāvāditraghoṣeṇa yathā vairocanistathā.

74. The great-armed one [Droṇa], accompanied by the sounds of various musical instruments, proceeded towards Arjuna's chariot, just as Bali, the son of Virocana, [would proceed].
ततः शब्दो महानासीत्सैन्यानां तव भारत ।
अगाधं प्रस्थितं दृष्ट्वा समुद्रमिव कौरवम् ॥७५॥
75. tataḥ śabdo mahānāsītsainyānāṁ tava bhārata ,
agādhaṁ prasthitaṁ dṛṣṭvā samudramiva kauravam.
75. tataḥ śabdaḥ mahān āsīt sainyānāṃ tava bhārata
agādhaṃ prasthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā samudram iva kauravam
75. bhārata tataḥ tava sainyānāṃ mahān śabdaḥ āsīt

75. Then, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), a great noise arose from your armies, as they saw the Kaurava host advancing like an unfathomable ocean.
